Own and Control Your Data

There’s been a lot of talk on LinkedIn lately about data sovereignty. The conversation runs along these lines: For years, ranchers have been the guinea pigs for data platforms. Companies developed sub-par ranch management tools as the bait. The real business model was always the same — collect massive amounts of operational data, bundle it, and sell it back to the people who created it.

So what needs to happen? People say we need a system where the rancher owns the data and owns the UI layer. A complete ecosystem under their control. The whole thing developed and deployed.

The part everyone misses: you don’t have to wait for this to be developed. It already exists. You can build it before dinner.

AgriWebb and URUS

AgriWebb is a functional piece of software. It works. But here’s what I hear from the ranchers who use it: it’s just OK. Not loved. Not inspiring. Just adequate enough to do the job.

Turner Ranches — 2 million acres, 45,000 head of bison — uses AgriWebb. When they want a new feature or need something changed, they wait. Minimum of six months. Sometimes longer. Because AgriWebb has to prioritize across hundreds of customers with competing needs, and a feature request from even a massive operation gets in line with everyone else.

On May 18, 2026, URUS Group — a major genetics company — announced they were acquiring AgriWebb. They didn’t buy it for the software. They didn’t buy it to make AgriWebb better at ranch management. They bought it for the data.

Here’s what happens next: AgriWebb stops being a ranch management tool. It becomes a data extraction and aggregation tool. Customization? Forget about it. New features that don’t serve URUS’s business model? Won’t happen. The acquisition is about adding value to URUS shareholders, not ranchers.

I’m not trying to sound cynical. I’m being honest about how tech acquisitions work. I’ve never seen a small, boutique software improve after being acquired by a huge corporation. Not once. The incentives change immediately. The priorities shift. The tool that used to serve the customer gets repurposed to serve the parent company.

This is the pattern. A company builds something useful. Ranchers adopt it. The data starts flowing. Then a larger company with a different business model shows up and acquires the tool. Suddenly the rancher is just a data source for someone else’s extraction play.

The conversation about this is valid. The solution people describe is correct. But it’s already here.

I use Claude and Zite. And I’m not saying this because I’m theorizing about it or because it sounds good. I’m saying it because I’m actually building systems this way for ranches right now. It works.

Start with what you have. Export your ranch data to a spreadsheet — whatever you’re already tracking, however messy it is. Cattle records. Pasture history. Labor logs. Feed costs. Genetics data. Whatever you’re managing in Excel or Google Sheets or scattered across different tools.
