The faithful person sitting in the rubble of something they didn’t deserve to lose.

What This Does to Your Theology

When you are faithful and things fall apart, it doesn’t just hurt you practically. It destabilizes something deeper the internal framework through which you’ve been understanding how God and life interact.

Most of us, somewhere underneath our conscious theology, carry an implicit arrangement. It doesn’t always get articulated. It rarely gets examined. But it functions as a background operating system that shapes our expectations: if I am faithful, God will protect me from the worst things. If I pray and give and serve and live with integrity, my life will not fall apart in the ways that other people’s lives fall apart.

This arrangement is not entirely without scriptural basis there are genuine promises connected to faithfulness in Scripture. But it is also not the whole picture. And when life violates it when the arrangement breaks down in the specific, personal, undeniable way that it does when faithful people experience profound loss it does not just produce grief.

It produces a crisis of framework.

Suddenly the operating system that has been quietly running in the background is exposed as incomplete. And the questions that come flooding in are not just about the specific loss they are about everything that loss implies. Did my faithfulness mean nothing? Is God keeping score differently than I thought? Was the arrangement I thought existed never actually real? And the most frightening one of all: have I been wrong about the fundamental nature of how this works?

These questions are not faithless. They are the honest, unavoidable result of a theology being tested by real life and finding that it needs to grow larger and more honest than it was before.

The Sermon: Habakkuk’s Impossible Declaration

Habakkuk 3:17–18 is one of the most remarkable passages in all of Scripture and one of the least preached, because it is deeply uncomfortable for anyone who wants a tidy theology of blessing and protection.

Habakkuk was a prophet who looked at the world around him and could not reconcile what he saw with what he believed about God. He opened his book with a raw, unfiltered complaint: “How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not save?” He was not a man of weak faith having a bad week. He was a man of deep faith having a genuine, sustained encounter with the gap between what God had promised and what the world actually looked like.

And God’s response was not the one Habakkuk wanted. He told Habakkuk that He was going to use the Babylonians a nation more wicked than Israel to bring judgment on His own people. Which raised even more questions. Which produced even more wrestling.

And out of that wrestling out of the honest, sustained, unresolved engagement with the hardest questions came one of the most extraordinary statements of faith in the entire Bible.

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls...”

He is describing total agricultural collapse. In an agrarian society, this is not an inconvenience it is catastrophe. No figs, no grapes, no olives, no grain, no sheep, no cattle. Everything that sustains life is gone. Every visible evidence of blessing has been removed.

“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

Yet. That word is doing everything. Not therefore not because the circumstances are good. Yet in spite of the fact that they are not. I will rejoice not because my life is working out the way I expected but because God is still God and His character has not changed even though my circumstances have.

This is not optimism. This is not positive thinking. This is the hardest, most costly, most genuine expression of faith available to a human being the decision to anchor your joy not in outcomes but in the unchanging character of the God who holds the outcomes.

Habakkuk did not arrive at this declaration easily. He wrestled his way there. He asked the hard questions, received unsatisfying answers, wrestled some more and came out the other side not with resolution but with a faith that was larger and more honest than the one he started with.

That is what the falling-apart seasons do to people who stay in the wrestling. They do not produce a tidy theology. They produce a larger faith. A faith that has been tested and held. A faith that knows not theoretically but experientially that God is present in the collapse as well as the blessing. That joy is possible when circumstances have removed every visible reason for it. That the yet is available even when the fig tree has nothing to offer.

The Message

Here is what I want to say directly to the faithful person sitting in the rubble:

Your faithfulness was not wasted. Not one moment of it.

I know it feels that way. I know the scoreboard of your life does not currently reflect what the implicit arrangement promised. I know you are looking at the gap between what you believed faithfulness would produce and what it actually produced and the gap is real and painful and deserves to be acknowledged as such.

But faithfulness is not primarily an investment strategy. It is not a transaction in which you deposit good behavior and withdraw good outcomes. It is a relationship with a God who is not bound by the arrangement you thought existed and is working toward something larger than the outcomes you can currently measure.

The faithfulness you practiced in the years before the collapse was building something in you that the collapse cannot touch. The character. The rootedness. The depth of trust that only comes from a life of genuine, costly, sometimes unrewarded faithfulness. Those things are real more real, ultimately, than the circumstances that fell apart.

And here is the thing about faithful people in rubble: they rebuild differently than people who never built faithfully in the first place. They know things that comfortable people don’t know. They have access to a God they met in the dark in ways that people who only know the light cannot access. They have a testimony that reaches people in the rubble because they have been there themselves.

The falling apart is not the end of your story. It is not evidence that your faithfulness was misguided. It is the territory where God does some of His most significant work in people who have stopped being able to sustain themselves and have discovered that He can sustain them in ways they never had to find out before.

The yet is available to you. Not immediately. Not without the wrestling. But it is there on the other side of the honest, sustained, unresolved engagement with the hardest questions.

Keep wrestling. Keep showing up. Keep bringing the ruins to the God who specializes in rebuilding from rubble.

He is not finished with this.

A Real Story

Jennifer had been faithful her entire adult life. She tithed consistently, served in her church, raised her children in faith, maintained her marriage through genuinely hard seasons, and prayed with the kind of persistent, believing prayer that people around her admired.

At fifty-one her husband left. After twenty-six years.

The theological crisis was as devastating as the personal one. She told her pastor: I did everything right. I prayed, I forgave, I tried, I believed. And it still fell apart. What does that mean about any of it?

Her pastor sat with her in the question for a long time before he said anything. And then he said: it means that faithfulness was never the guarantee you thought it was. It was always a response to who God is not a down payment on a specific outcome. And the God you were faithful to is still the same God. He just isn’t bound by the arrangement you thought existed.

It took Jennifer two years to find the yet. Two years of wrestling, of honest prayer, of bringing the ruins to God without pretending they weren’t ruins. But she found it. And the faith she has now is something she describes as unrecognizable from the faith she had before not weaker.

She said: I thought my faith was strong before. I didn’t know what strong actually was until it was the only thing I had left.

1. Write down the specific thing you were faithful about that still fell apart. Name it fully don’t minimize it or rush to the lesson.

2. What did that falling apart reveal about the implicit arrangement you’d been carrying? What did you believe about how faithfulness and outcomes were supposed to work?

3. Where in your life right now can you find the yet the place where you can choose to anchor your joy in God’s character rather than your circumstances?

4. Write a letter to God about the ruins. Not the theologized version the honest one. What do you actually want to say to Him about what happened?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I was faithful. And things fell apart anyway. And I need to be honest with You about what that did to me not just the grief of the loss but the confusion of the theology. The arrangement I thought existed has been exposed as incomplete.

And I am sitting in the rubble of something I didn’t deserve to lose, trying to find the yet. It is hard to find today. But I am looking for it. I am choosing to anchor myself to Your character even when my circumstances give me no visible reason to. You are still God. You are still good. You are still present in this rubble.

Help me believe that on the days when I can’t feel it. And show me what You are building in the ruins. I trust You imperfectly, honestly, with everything I have. Amen.

You know exactly what it is.

You don’t have to think hard to find it. It has been there for years sometimes quiet, sometimes louder in the moments when life slows down enough for you to hear things you usually drown out. The thing you wanted to do before you became responsible. Before the dream met the reality of your finances, your family, your time, your age, the voices that told you to be practical, to be realistic, to be grateful for what you have and stop reaching for things that probably weren’t meant for you anyway.

Whatever it is you buried it. Carefully, responsibly, with good reasons. And it has been in the ground ever since. And occasionally, in the quiet moments, you feel the weight of it there. The thing that didn’t get to live.

Why We Bury Our Dreams

The reasons people bury their dreams are almost always the same, and almost always feel completely valid at the time.

It’s not practical. The finances don’t support it. The timing isn’t right. The responsibilities you carry don’t leave room for something that risky, that uncertain, that dependent on factors you can’t control.

It’s too late. You’re too old. Too established in a direction that’s already been set. Too many years have passed since the dream was fresh and possible. The window has closed.

You’re not good enough. Other people do this better than you would. The world doesn’t need another person attempting the thing you want to attempt not when there are people already doing it who are more talented, more trained, more equipped.

It’s selfish. The people who depend on you need the stable, responsible version of you not the version that is chasing something uncertain for their own fulfillment.

And then the most spiritual-sounding reason of all, and the one that is most often used to give theological cover to fear:

Maybe it wasn’t God’s plan for me after all.

Each of these reasons feels true when you’re inside them. And some of them contain real elements of truth. Timing matters. Responsibility matters. Wisdom about capacity matters.

But there is a difference between wisdom and fear. And many of the dreams that got buried were not buried by wisdom. They were buried by fear wearing wisdom’s clothing.

The Sermon: Handiwork, Not Accident

Ephesians 2:10 contains one of the most significant statements about human identity and purpose in all of Scripture and it is almost always underread because it sits in the shadow of the more famous verses around it.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Handiwork. The Greek word is poiema from which we get the English word poem. You are God’s poem. His crafted work. Something He made with intention, with care, with specific design not mass-produced but individually conceived and constructed for a specific purpose.

And the works the things you were made to do were prepared in advance. Before you arrived. Before you made any choices. Before life shaped you into the person you became. God prepared specific works not generic good deeds available to anyone but specific things that fit the specific person He made when He made you.

This means your dreams the ones that align with how He made you, that fit the specific combination of gifts and passions and experiences that are uniquely yours are not accidental. They are not the irresponsible wishes of a person who needs to grow up and be practical. They may be the fingerprints of a God who designed you for something specific and planted the desire for it inside you as a compass pointing toward the thing you were made for.

Not all dreams are from God. Some are from ego, from comparison, from the desire to prove something or acquire something. Discernment matters.

But many of the dreams that got buried especially the ones that have persisted across years and decades, that keep surfacing in the quiet moments no matter how many times you push them back down are not accidental. They are not the residue of immaturity you haven’t grown out of. They are something planted by Someone who knew what He was making and why.

The Message

Here is what I want to say to the person who buried the dream because it felt too big:

The bigness was not the problem. The bigness was the point.

God is not in the business of calling people to things that are perfectly within their natural capacity to achieve without Him. The pattern of Scripture is precisely the opposite He calls people to things that are too big for them, that require more than they have, that cannot be accomplished without His involvement. Moses couldn’t deliver Israel on his own. David couldn’t defeat Goliath on his own. Mary couldn’t carry the Son of God into the world on her own. The disciples couldn’t turn the world upside down on their own.

The bigness is not evidence that the dream is wrong. It may be evidence that the dream is right that it is the kind of thing that requires God’s involvement, and that His involvement is exactly what He was planning on when He planted the desire in you.

The practical objections are real. The timing matters. The responsibilities matter. The wisdom required to pursue a dream without blowing up a life matters.

But there is a difference between pursuing a dream wisely and not pursuing it at all. There is a difference between putting a dream on a realistic timeline and declaring it dead. There is a difference between being a responsible adult and being a person who has decided that the desires God planted in them are too inconvenient to take seriously.

You are not too old. Moses was eighty when God appeared to him in the burning bush. Abraham was seventy-five when God called him to leave everything. Anna was eighty-four when she recognized the Messiah in the temple and became one of the first people to proclaim who He was. God is not bound by your timeline and He has a long history of doing the most significant things in people’s lives in the seasons when they thought the window had closed.

You are not too ordinary. David was the youngest son, left in the field while his brothers were evaluated. Gideon was hiding in a winepress when the angel found him. Peter was a fisherman. The pattern of Scripture is not exceptional people living exceptional lives. It is ordinary people saying yes to an exceptional God and being astounded at what happens next.

The dream is not too big. You were made for something specific. And the God who made you for it is not intimidated by the gap between where you are and where the dream requires you to be.

What Happened When You Buried It

Something specific happens to a person when they bury a dream that was genuinely planted by God.

It doesn’t disappear. That is the first thing. The dream that was meant for you does not quietly go away when you decide to be practical. It goes underground and underground dreams have a way of pressing against the surface in ways that show up where you least expect them. In the restlessness that no amount of achievement in the wrong direction resolves. In the envy you feel specific, pointed envy when you see someone else doing the thing you buried. In the flatness of a life that is objectively fine but persistently feels like something is missing.

The restlessness is not ingratitude. The envy is not a character failure. The flatness is not depression or not only depression. They are signals. The dream is still there. Still pressing. Still waiting to know whether you’re going to come back for it.

And something else happens. When you bury the thing you were made for, a version of yourself gets buried with it. The person who writes didn’t stop existing when you stopped writing they went quiet. The person who creates or leads or builds or serves in the specific way they were designed to that person is still there, underneath the practical, responsible, realistic version you’ve been running.

They are waiting for you to come back.

What Coming Back Looks Like

Coming back to a buried dream does not always look like quitting your job and betting everything on a dramatic reinvention. For most people, in most situations, it looks much smaller and much more sustainable than that.

It looks like beginning. Quietly. Without telling everyone. Without needing it to be fully formed or publicly validated before it’s real. One hour a week. One page. One step in the direction of the thing not the finished version of the thing but the beginning of it.

It looks like treating the dream as something worth taking seriously enough to give it real time and real attention rather than the leftover minutes after everything else is handled. The person who waits for the perfect time will wait forever. The person who begins with the imperfect time they actually have the early morning, the lunch break, the Saturday hour before the family wakes up is the one who finds out whether the dream is real.

It looks like bringing it to God honestly. Not presenting it as a petition grant me this dream but as a conversation. Lord, this is what I’ve wanted for a long time and I’ve been afraid to take it seriously. Is this from You? Help me know. And if it is help me find the courage and the wisdom to begin.

It looks like being willing to start small enough that failure is survivable. The person who insists on beginning at scale, with everything on the line, is using perfectionism as a reason not to begin at all. Start smaller than you think the dream deserves. Start where you are. With what you have. Today.

And it looks like accepting that the path from buried dream to living dream is not a straight line. It is slow, nonlinear, full of setbacks and recalibrations and moments where the practical reality of pursuing the thing is significantly less romantic than the dream of pursuing the thing. The people who see their dreams become real are not the ones who had the best ideas. They are the ones who kept going after the initial inspiration wore off and the real work began.

A Real Story

James had wanted to be a writer since he was twelve years old. By thirty-five he was a regional sales manager with a mortgage, three kids, and approximately zero time for anything that didn’t pay the bills.

He hadn’t written anything in eight years. He told himself the season for that had passed. That it was an adolescent fantasy. That the responsible thing was to be grateful for the stable life he’d built.

But the dream kept pressing. He’d read something that moved him and feel the ghost of the person he’d buried. He’d see a book in a store and feel the specific, pointed ache of the thing he hadn’t done.

At thirty-eight, he gave himself one hour on Saturday mornings. Before anyone woke up. Just one hour and a cup of coffee and a document that no one else could see.

Four years later he had a manuscript. Not a perfect one. But a real one. The thing that had been buried for twenty years, dug up and brought into the light one Saturday morning at a time.

He said: I spent years telling myself it was too late and I wasn’t good enough and the timing wasn’t right. And all of those things were true they were just not the most important true things. The most important true thing was that God made me to do this and I was the only one who could decide whether I was going to do it or not.

He started. That was the whole thing. He started.

Closing Journal Prompts

1. Name the dream. The specific one. The one you buried. Write it down the full version, not the minimized, practical version. What was it really?

2. What exactly did you tell yourself when you buried it and where did that message come from? Who taught you that this wasn’t for you?

3. What would you attempt if you knew the bigness of it was the point rather than the problem?

4. What is the smallest possible beginning one hour, one step, one honest conversation with God about it that you could take this week?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I buried something that I think You planted. I called it being practical and responsible and realistic and some of that was wisdom. But some of it was fear. Fear that it was too big. That I wasn’t good enough. That the window had closed.

That wanting something so specific for myself was somehow selfish or faithless. Today I am digging it back up. Not with a plan or a timeline or a certainty about how it works out just with an open hand. Here it is. The thing I’ve wanted for longer than I can remember. Is it from You? Show me. And if it is give me the courage to begin. Not perfectly. Not at scale. Just to begin. One step in the direction of the thing You made me for. I trust You with what comes next. Amen.

Don’t skip past these. Give them a real moment before you continue.

• When someone asks how you are, do you instinctively redirect to how everyone else is doing?

• When did you last do something just for you without justifying it to yourself or anyone else?

• If the people in your life were truly honest, would they say they know the real you or a very giving, very capable version of you?

There is a kind of person the church tends to celebrate.

The one who is always available and always serving. Always thinking about what other people need before they think about what they need themselves. The person whose phone is always answered, whose door is always open, whose energy always seems to be available for whoever needs it. The one who holds everything together the family, the friendships, the community through sheer faithful, consistent, self-expenditure.

We put these people on committees. We ask them to lead things. We say things like: I don’t know what we’d do without them. And we mean it.

What we don’t always ask is: who is taking care of them?

What we don’t always notice is what years of living for everyone else does to a person not just to their energy levels but to their sense of self. Their ability to know what they actually want, feel, need, believe. Their capacity for honest relationship. Their connection to the God who made them as a specific, individual, unique person rather than a function to be performed for the benefit of others.

This newsletter is for the person who has been living for everyone else for so long they’ve forgotten how to live for themselves. And I want to begin by saying something that may feel unfamiliar:

That is not virtue. It is a wound wearing virtue’s clothing.

What This Actually Is

Living for everyone else to the point where your own needs, desires, and identity have become secondary considerations, afterthoughts, or sources of guilt is not always the result of extraordinary generosity. Often it is the result of something much more complicated.

Sometimes it comes from a family of origin that required you to manage other people’s emotions from a young age. The child who learned early that the household was more stable when they were invisible when they didn’t have needs, didn’t make demands, didn’t add to the weight that the adults around them were already carrying. That child became very good at attending to others. And they carried that skill and the belief system underneath it into every relationship they ever had.

Sometimes it comes from a theology that was taught badly the idea that self-denial means self-erasure, that dying to yourself means having no self left, that the most Christlike thing you can do is put yourself last in every situation. That theology is not wrong in its intention but devastating in its application because it produces people who cannot receive care, cannot establish limits, cannot say no to a request without drowning in guilt, cannot prioritize their own needs without feeling selfish.

Sometimes it comes from the discovery that being needed is one of the most reliable ways to feel valued. That if you are useful enough, helpful enough, available enough people will want you around. And being wanted feels enough like being loved that you stopped looking for the real thing.

Whatever the root the pattern is real. And it costs more than most people who are living it have allowed themselves to calculate.

The Sermon: The Command You Only Quote Half Of

Mark 12:31 is one of the most quoted verses in the New Testament. Jesus names it as the second greatest commandment love your neighbor as yourself. We preach the first half constantly. Love your neighbor. Serve others. Put others first. Give generously. Show up for people. Be available.

We almost never preach the second half.

As yourself.

The command to love your neighbor is calibrated to something your love for yourself. It assumes a baseline of self-regard, self-care, honest self-knowledge from which the love of others flows. It does not say love your neighbor instead of yourself. It does not say love your neighbor more than yourself. It says as yourself meaning your relationship with yourself is the measuring cup from which your love for others is poured.

This has enormous implications. It means that a person who does not love themselves well who does not know themselves, care for themselves, attend to their own needs and limits and interior life is not actually equipped to love their neighbor well. They are pouring from a cup that is empty. Or from a cup that is filled with obligation and fear rather than genuine, freely given love.

The person who gives from depletion does not give from love. They give from compulsion from the inability to say no, from the belief that their value is contingent on their usefulness, from the fear of what happens to a relationship when they stop performing. That is not generosity. That is survival masquerading as generosity.

Jesus’s command assumes something that the people-pleasing, self-erasing version of Christianity misses: you are worth loving. You specifically. The person reading this with your specific needs, desires, limitations, interior life, and God-given identity. You are worth loving in the same way your neighbor is. And the failure to love yourself well is not humility. It is a failure to receive what God says about the person He made when He made you.

The Message

Here is the thing that nobody tells the person who has been living for everyone else:

The people in your life are not getting the best of you. They are getting what’s left.

The exhausted, depleted, self-erased version of you that shows up after you’ve given everyone else what they needed is not your gift to the people you love. It is the consequence of a system that was never sustainable and the people who love you are receiving a diminished version of the person they actually want.

Your spouse does not want a partner who has nothing left at the end of the day because they spent everything on everyone else. Your children do not want a parent who is physically present but emotionally absent because they gave their emotional presence to everyone who asked for it. Your friends do not want a friend who is always available but never real who shows up for everyone else’s needs but never brings their own.

What the people in your life actually want what they need is you. The real version. The one who knows what they think and feel and want. The one who has enough left to be genuinely present. The one who loves from a full place rather than performing love from an empty one.

And that version of you requires care. Requires space. Requires the willingness to say no to some things so that you can say yes to the things that matter most. Requires the daily practice of attending to your own interior life with the same faithfulness that you attend to everyone else’s.

This is not selfishness. This is stewardship. Of the specific, unrepeatable, God-made person that you are.

What Jesus Actually Modeled

We sometimes act as though Jesus was endlessly, unconditionally available to everyone all the time. The text does not support this.

Jesus withdrew regularly. Luke 5:16 says He often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Not occasionally. Often. In the middle of active ministry, with people pressing in from every direction, He regularly chose solitude over availability.

He said no. When a crowd wanted to make Him king, He withdrew. When His brothers pressured Him to go public at a certain time, He declined. When people wanted Him to stay in one place because of what He was doing there, He said He needed to go to other towns.

He kept an inner circle. Not everyone got the same access. The crowd got the teaching. The disciples got more. Peter, James, and John got what the others didn’t. Jesus was not equally available to everyone He was intentional about where He invested His deepest presence.

He rested. He slept in the boat in the middle of the storm. He sat at the well while the disciples went to get food. He attended a wedding and appeared to be simply enjoying it. The most important person who ever lived did not treat rest as a luxury or an indulgence. He treated it as a necessity because He understood that the human body, even His, was not designed for unlimited output without replenishment.

If Jesus the Son of God, motivated by perfect love rather than obligation or fear built withdrawal, rest, limits, and intentional unavailability into His ministry, then the idea that you should be endlessly available to everyone all the time is not a Christian virtue. It is a misunderstanding of one.

The Cost of Never Stopping

The person who never stops who never withdraws, never rests, never attends to their own interior life does not become more loving over time. They become more mechanical. More resentful. More disconnected from the genuine motivation that made the giving meaningful in the first place.

The giving that starts as love, when sustained without replenishment, becomes obligation. Then duty. Then compulsion. And finally the thing nobody admits resentment. The quiet, guilty, unspoken resentment of a person who has given so much for so long that they no longer remember why they started. Who wonders, in their most honest moments, whether any of it was actually their own choice or whether they simply never learned how to choose differently.

That resentment is not a character failure. It is a signal. It is the soul’s way of saying: something is wrong with this system. Something needs to change. Not because love has run out but because the well that was never replenished has run dry.

The resentment is not the problem. It is the symptom. And the treatment is not guilt about the resentment it is the honest acknowledgment that you are a person with needs, limits, and an interior life that deserves the same attention you give to everyone else’s.

How to Start Coming Back to Yourself

This is not a quick process. Years of self-erasure are not reversed in a week. But there are specific, honest, sustainable things you can begin.

Start by getting curious about yourself again. What do you actually enjoy not what you enjoy doing for other people, but what you would choose if no one else’s needs were a factor? What do you think about things, separate from what you’ve learned is acceptable to think in the relationships around you? What do you need right now physically, emotionally, spiritually that you have been denying or deferring?

These questions feel strange to many people-pleasers. Almost self-indulgent. That strangeness is itself diagnostic it tells you how far the self-erasure has gone when getting curious about your own interior life feels like a guilty luxury.

Practice saying no to one thing this week. Not the most important thing something small. The request that will survive without your yes. The obligation that someone else could meet. The thing you say yes to out of habit or guilt rather than genuine desire. Say no. Notice how it feels. Notice what story you tell yourself about what it means. That story the one that makes saying no feel dangerous or selfish or unkind is the thing that needs the most attention.

Find a space that is yours. Not shared, not performed, not for the benefit of anyone else. A journal. A walk. A room. A practice. Something that belongs to the interior life of the specific person you are. And protect it. Not from other people’s emergency but from the ordinary encroachment of a life that has learned to fill every available space with other people’s needs.

And begin bringing the real version of yourself into your relationships. Not all at once. But incrementally. Let one person know what you’re actually thinking. Tell the truth when someone asks how you are, at least to the person who can handle the real answer. Let yourself be known not just needed in at least one relationship. The intimacy that comes from being genuinely known is far more sustaining than the connection that comes from being endlessly useful.

A Real Story

Michelle had been the person everyone called for forty years. The one who showed up. The one who organized the meals and made the calls and remembered the birthdays and managed the family dynamics and held everything together.

At 52, after her youngest left for college and the house went quiet for the first time in twenty years, she had a breakdown that she described as unexpected and completely inevitable.

She told her therapist: I don’t know who I am when I’m not needed. I’ve been someone’s something for my entire adult life and I don’t know what’s left when you take that away.

Her therapist asked: what did you love before you became responsible for everyone else?

She couldn’t answer immediately. It had been that long.

Over the following year she began the slow, strange, sometimes grief-filled process of becoming acquainted with herself. What she liked. What she thought. What she wanted. It felt selfish at first. Then uncomfortable. Then, gradually, like coming home to a person she had abandoned without meaning to.

She said: I spent forty years pouring into everyone else and calling it love. Some of it was. But some of it was fear, fear of who I was without the function. And when the function went away I had to figure out who that was. I’m still figuring it out. But I’m more real now than I’ve been since I was twenty years old. And the people I love are getting something more genuine than they were getting before.

Closing Journal Prompts

1. Who are you when no one needs anything from you? Write about that person what they like, what they feel, what they need.

2. What is one relationship in your life where you have been performing love rather than actually giving it because you had nothing real left to give?

3. Where did you learn that having your own needs was selfish or burdensome? Write about the root of that belief.

4. What is one specific thing you are going to do this week that is just for you and what story will you have to fight to allow yourself to do it?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I have been pouring out for so long that I’ve forgotten what it feels like to be filled. I’ve been showing up for everyone around me while quietly disappearing from my own life. And I’ve been calling it faithfulness when some of it if I’m honest was fear. Fear of being without a function. Fear of what I would find if I stopped long enough to look.

Today I am stopping. And I am asking You to show me who You made when You made me not the helper, not the function, not the person everyone counts on, but the specific, individual, beloved person underneath all of that. Fill that person up. Teach them that receiving is not selfishness. That rest is not laziness. That they are loved for who they are, not what they do. And help them help me bring that real, filled, genuine person into the relationships I care most about. Amen.

Take a moment before you dive in. Don’t rush past these. Let them land.

What This Year May Have Cost You

There are losses that happen in hard years that don’t get acknowledged because they aren’t dramatic enough to name out loud.

The loss of your optimism the easy, unearned confidence in good outcomes that you used to carry without thinking about it. It is harder to believe things will be okay when you have evidence that they aren’t always.

The loss of your energy not the physical kind that sleep fixes but the deeper kind, the reserve you drew on when things got hard, that has been drawn on so many times this year that it is genuinely, frighteningly low.

The loss of your certainty about people, about plans, about the version of your life you thought you were building. The year had a way of revealing how little of it was actually in your control.

The loss of the person you thought you’d be by now. The version of yourself that was supposed to be further along, more settled, more healed, more certain. The gap between that version and the one who actually lived this year is real. And it is okay to grieve it.

None of these losses require a dramatic external event. They can accumulate in an ordinary hard year in the slow attrition of months that required more than they gave. And they deserve to be named, grieved, and brought honestly to God rather than minimized because they don’t seem big enough to count.

They count and you count. What this year cost you counts.

The Sermon: You Were Not Designed to Carry This Alone

Isaiah 40 was written to people who were exhausted.

The Israelites had been in exile for decades. The generation that remembered Jerusalem was dying. The generation that had grown up in Babylon knew nothing else. The hope that the first wave of captives had carried with them surely this will be short, surely God will intervene soon had been ground down by the long reality of a situation that did not resolve.

And into that specific, bone-deep, generational exhaustion, Isaiah spoke one of the most tender passages in all of Scripture.

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Notice the progression. Not soar first. Walk first. Walk and not be faint.

For the person who barely made it through this year, soaring is not the immediate invitation. Walking is. Putting one foot in front of the other without collapsing. Getting through the day without being consumed by it. That is the starting point of the promise and it is not a small one. It is the specific, targeted, exactly-where-you-are promise of a God who meets people in their exhaustion rather than waiting for them to recover before He shows up.

He gives strength to the weary. Not to the strong. Not to the people who have it together. To the weary. Which means if you are reading this and you are weary genuinely, deeply, can’t-pretend-otherwise weary you are exactly who this promise is for.

He does not require you to generate the strength yourself and then bring it to Him. He generates it. He gives it. Your job is to receive it which, in the Christian life, is often the hardest job of all. Not doing more. Receiving. Stopping long enough to let the God who does not grow weary give you what He promises to people who are running on empty.

You were not designed to carry this year alone. And the God who watched you try is not disappointed in how depleted you are. He is present in it. He is offering something specific for it. And it begins with hope not optimistic feeling, but the intentional, practiced, sometimes desperate orientation toward the God who has not run out of what you need.

The Message

I want to say something directly to the person who made it through this year but doesn’t feel like celebrating it.

You may feel like you survived rather than thrived. Like you got to the end of the year by sheer momentum rather than by any strength or wisdom of your own. Like other people had better years and you’re not sure what that says about you or about God.

Here is what I want you to hear: surviving is not a lesser achievement than thriving. In some years, in some seasons, survival is the faithfulness. Showing up when it was hard. Staying when it would have been easier to leave. Believing even weakly, even imperfectly when the evidence for believing was not obvious.

That is not failure. That is one of the most genuine expressions of faith available to a human being.

The disciples didn’t thrive in the storm. They survived it barely, terrified, convinced they were going to drown. And Jesus was in the boat with them the entire time. Not measuring their performance. Not grading their faith on a curve. In the boat. With them.

He was in your year with you. In the hardest months. In the nights that wouldn’t end. In the mornings that required more than you had. He was there not always felt, not always obvious, but present in a way that the other side of this season will make clearer than the inside of it allows you to see.

You barely made it through. And you made it through. Both things are true. And the second one the fact that you are here, still standing, still believing, still in the story is something worth sitting with before you rush into the next chapter.

A Real Story

Carol had what she called a year of slow bleeding. Nothing catastrophic happened. No single event she could point to. Just months of difficulty stacking on top of each other a marriage that was struggling, a job that was draining, a friendship that ended badly, a health scare that resolved but left anxiety in its wake.

By November she told her sister: I don’t know how I’m still functioning. I feel like I’ve been running a race I didn’t sign up for and I’m out of everything.

Her sister asked her: what has kept you going?

Carol thought about it for a long time. She said: honestly? Habit. I kept showing up to prayer even when it felt like nothing. I kept going to church even when I got nothing from it. I kept getting up because what else do you do.

Her sister said: that’s not nothing. That’s actually faith. The kind that doesn’t feel like faith. The kind that keeps showing up anyway.

Carol said that reframe that the mechanical, going-through-the-motions faithfulness was itself a form of genuine faith was the thing that gave her permission to stop being ashamed of how hard the year had been. She hadn’t thrived, she had survived. And surviving, faithfully, in a year that required everything she had, was enough.

What You Can Do Right Now

Before you close this and move on do one thing.

Sit with the year honestly. Not to analyze it or extract lessons from it or figure out what you should have done differently. Just sit with it. Name what it cost. Acknowledge what it held. Allow yourself to feel whatever surfaces without rushing to the reframe.

And then bring it to God. The whole year. The real version not the sanitized, faithfully packaged version but the actual one. The exhaustion. The confusion. The places your faith bent under the weight. The losses that didn’t have funerals. The version of yourself you thought you’d be by now.

Bring it all. He can hold it. He has been holding it. And He is offering you something specific for what you are carrying not the strength to go back and do it over but the strength to take the next step.

Just the next step. That is enough.

1. What specifically did this year cost you that you haven’t fully acknowledged yet? Write it down without minimizing it.

2. Where did you see evidence of God’s presence in the hardest moments of this year even evidence you missed at the time?

3. What do you want to carry forward from this year and what do you want to intentionally leave behind?

4. Write a one-paragraph honest letter to God about this year. No religious language. Just the truth.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, this year was hard in ways I haven’t said out loud to anyone. The exhaustion is real. The losses are real. The gap between who I wanted to be and who I actually was this year is real. I am bringing all of it to You today not the cleaned-up version, not the faithfully reframed version, the actual year, exactly as it was.

Thank You that You were in it even when I couldn’t feel You. Thank You that You don’t grade my faith on how well I performed in the hard seasons but on whether I kept turning toward You. I turned toward You. Imperfectly, inconsistently, sometimes barely but I turned. Receive that. And give me what I need for what’s next. Not all at once. Just enough for tomorrow. That is enough. You are enough. Amen.

Let’s start by dismantling the question slightly. Because the phrase “the best Christian” already carries a risk the risk of turning faith into a performance metric, a standard to be achieved, a ranking system in which you are always measuring yourself against some ideal and finding yourself perpetually short.

That is not what this article is about.

This is about something simpler and more honest: what does genuine, mature, deeply-rooted Christian faith actually look like in a real human life? Not the Instagram version. Not the version that impresses people at church. The version that holds in the dark. The version that produces real fruit in real relationships over a real lifetime.

Micah 6:8 may be the most concise answer in all of Scripture. Three things. Not thirty. Not a complicated theological framework or an exhaustive list of spiritual disciplines. Three things that, taken seriously and practiced consistently, will produce the kind of Christian life that actually matters.

Forgotten Bible Verses Book

Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.

Let’s take them one at a time and then build on them with the practical, honest, sometimes uncomfortable things that genuine Christian maturity requires.

Act Justly

Justice in Scripture is not primarily a political category. It is a relational one. It means treating people rightly with the fairness, the dignity, the equity that their status as image-bearers of God demands.

In practical terms, acting justly means paying your employees fairly. It means treating the person with less power the employee, the child, the person who can do nothing for you with the same dignity you extend to people you want to impress. It means not using your power, your position, or your advantage in ways that come at someone else’s expense.

It means being honest. Not just avoiding outright lies but living with an integrity of word and deed that people can rely on where what you say and what you do are consistently the same thing.

It means speaking up. Not just avoiding personal injustice but refusing to stay silent when you see someone else being treated unjustly. The prophets of the Old Testament were not primarily concerned with personal piety they were consumed with the treatment of the poor, the widow, the foreigner, the vulnerable. Acting justly in the biblical sense has an outward, other-directed, sometimes costly dimension that comfortable Christianity sometimes prefers not to examine.

The best Christians are not just nice. They are just. And those two things are not always the same.

Love Mercy

Notice the word Micah uses. Not practice mercy. Not extend mercy when it is warranted. Love mercy.

Mercy is to be something you are drawn to something that reflects the orientation of your heart rather than just the output of your behavior. The person who loves mercy does not extend it grudgingly, as a religious obligation, holding back just enough to make the recipient feel the weight of what they’ve been given. They extend it freely, generously, with the joy of someone who knows they have received far more than they have ever given.

Loving mercy means being the first to forgive rather than the last. It means giving people the benefit of the doubt as your default rather than your exception. It means responding to other people’s failures with the same grace you hope will be extended to yours.

It means not keeping score. Not banking grievances. Not waiting for an apology before you release the debt. Not loving people only when they deserve it because none of us deserves it, and the mercy that is contingent on deserving it is not mercy at all.

The best Christians are not the most theologically precise. They are the most merciful. The ones who make people feel received rather than evaluated. The ones who look most like the father who ran down the road to meet the returning prodigal not calculating the debt but celebrating the return.

Walk Humbly With Your God

This is the one that ties everything together and the one that is most easily missed.

Humbly. Not loudly. Not impressively. Not in a way that gets noticed and celebrated. Humbly. With the quiet, unglamorous, daily faithfulness of a person who knows they are walking with Someone far greater than themselves.

Humility in the Christian life is not thinking poorly of yourself. It is thinking accurately about yourself in relation to God which produces a kind of settled, undefended security that has nothing to prove and nothing to protect. The humble person does not need to be right in every argument. Does not need credit for every contribution. Does not need to be noticed for the good they do in secret. They are freed from the exhausting project of managing their own reputation because their identity is grounded in something that doesn’t require external maintenance.

Walking humbly with God means staying close to Him not in the seasons when it is easy and rewarding, but in the ordinary unremarkable days when nothing dramatic is happening and faithfulness is just the quiet daily choice to keep showing up. It means remaining teachable staying open to correction, to growth, to the possibility that your current understanding is incomplete and God has more to show you. It means holding your convictions with confidence and your certainty with humility knowing the difference between the things that are settled and the things that are still being worked out.

The best Christians are not the most confident. They are the most humble and paradoxically, the most secure.

What Genuine Christian Maturity Actually Looks Like

Beyond Micah 6:8, there are specific qualities that mark a genuinely mature Christian life not performance qualities but character qualities that develop over years of honest, faithful, sometimes stumbling discipleship.

They are honest about their own failures. The mature Christian is not someone who has stopped sinning or struggling. They are someone who has stopped pretending they haven’t. They bring their failures to God honestly, they acknowledge them to the people they’ve hurt, and they do not construct a version of themselves for public consumption that is significantly better than the private reality.

They are genuinely interested in other people. Not in a pastoral, strategic, how-can-I-serve-you way in the ordinary, unhurried, you-matter-to-me way that makes people feel genuinely seen. The mature Christian listens more than they speak. Asks more than they answer. Is present with the person in front of them rather than managing the interaction toward an outcome.

They have a long memory for grace. The person who remembers how much they have been forgiven has a fundamentally different posture toward others who need forgiveness. The mature Christian returns regularly to the ground of their own need to the specific ways they have been loved in the face of their own failures and lets that memory shape how they extend grace to others.

They keep showing up. Not just in the seasons when faith is rewarding and community is easy and the spiritual life is producing visible fruit. In the dry seasons, the disappointing seasons, the seasons when everything is harder than it should be. The mature Christian has developed a faithfulness that does not depend on conditions being favorable and that faithfulness, practiced over decades, is the most impressive thing in the world.

They are becoming more like Jesus in the ordinary moments. Not in the big dramatic moments those are easy to perform. In the ordinary ones. The way they speak to the cashier. What they do when someone is rude to them in traffic. How they treat the person who has nothing to offer them. How they handle the moment when no one is watching and there is nothing to gain. Those moments unremarkable, unobserved, unheroic are where genuine transformation is visible.

The Trap of Spiritual Performance

One of the most significant obstacles to genuine Christian maturity is the trap of spiritual performance the substitution of visible religious activity for actual interior transformation.

It is possible to attend church faithfully, read your Bible consistently, pray regularly, serve actively, give generously and still be a person whose interior life is largely unchanged. Still be someone who is anxious, controlling, unkind to the people closest to you, quick to judge, slow to forgive, secretly proud of your own righteousness.

Jesus had a word for this. He called it whitewashed tombs beautiful on the outside, hollow and dead on the inside.

The best Christian is not the most visibly active one. It is the one in whom something is genuinely being transformed slowly, imperfectly, over time, in the direction of love. The one who is kinder than they used to be. More patient. Less defensive. More honest. Quicker to forgive and slower to judge. More concerned with other people’s flourishing than with their own reputation.

That transformation is not dramatic. It does not happen in a single moment or a single season. It is the slow, cumulative, daily work of a person who keeps showing up to the relationship with God and letting that relationship do what it was designed to do.

The Most Important Thing

If there is one thing above all the practices, above all the disciplines, above all the character qualities that marks genuine Christian maturity, it is this:

A deep, personal, ongoing, honest relationship with Jesus.

Not a relationship with Christianity. Not a relationship with your church or your theology or your spiritual practices. A relationship with the Person the actual, living, present Jesus who is not a historical figure confined to the pages of Scripture but the risen Lord who is present, active, and personally invested in your specific life.

Everything else flows from that. The justice, the mercy, the humility they are not produced by trying harder. They are produced by being with Jesus long enough that His character begins to rub off on yours. By letting His love for people become your love for people. By letting His way of seeing with compassion, without judgment, with infinite patience for the struggling and the broken become your way of seeing.

The best Christian is not the most disciplined or the most doctrinally sound or the most visibly faithful. The best Christian is the one who is most genuinely, most honestly, most deeply in relationship with Jesus and letting that relationship slowly, quietly, from the inside out, make them more like Him.

That is available to you. Not through performance. Through presence. Through showing up to the relationship every day imperfectly, honestly, with whatever you actually have and trusting the One you are showing up to do what only He can do.

Practical Steps Forward

Here is what this looks like in concrete, daily terms.

Start every day by orienting toward Jesus before anything else. Not a long ritual a genuine moment. Lord, this day is Yours. I need You in it.

Choose one relationship this week to love better more patiently, more honestly, more generously. Not every relationship. One. The practice of intentional love in one specific relationship does more for your character than a dozen general intentions.

Find one place to practice justice to treat someone more fairly, more equitably, more consistently with their dignity as an image-bearer. The person at work you’ve been dismissing. The family member you’ve been impatient with. The stranger you’ve been looking past.

Practice mercy in the place it is hardest. Not where it is easy where it costs you something. The person who doesn’t deserve it by your accounting. The one you’ve been waiting to see apologize first. Lead with the mercy. Watch what it does to you.

Stay honest. With God, with yourself, with the people close to you. Do not maintain a version of yourself that is better than the reality. The real you the struggling, inconsistent, still-being-formed version is the one God is working with. Let people see enough of that to have a real relationship with you rather than a managed one.

And keep showing up. On the dry days and the full ones. The days when faith is easy and the days when it costs everything. Keep showing up. That faithfulness ordinary, unglamorous, day after day is the most profound spiritual achievement available to a human being.

1. Of the three things in Micah 6:8 act justly, love mercy, walk humbly which one is most underdeveloped in your life right now?

2. Where in your life are you performing Christianity rather than living it? What would the honest version look like?

3. What is one specific, practical thing you could do this week to be more genuinely like Jesus in an ordinary moment?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to be a good-looking Christian. I want to be a genuine one. Not impressive on the outside while hollow on the inside but slowly, actually, from the inside out, becoming more like You.

Teach me to act justly in the places where justice costs me something. Teach me to love mercy in the places where my instinct is to keep score. And teach me to walk humbly with You not loudly, not impressively, but close. Near enough to hear You. Near enough to be changed by You. That is what I want. Not performance. Transformation. Do that work in me. I am willing. Amen.

This is one of the hardest places a person of faith can find themselves.

Not doubt in the abstract. Not a theological question you can sit with comfortably from a distance. This is the specific, personal, devastating experience of praying genuinely, faithfully, persistently praying for someone you love, and watching them not get better.

The parent who prayed over their child every single night and still got the call. The spouse who believed God for healing and sat beside a hospital bed that didn’t produce a miracle. The friend who interceded with everything they had for someone whose condition kept declining. The person who stood on every promise in Scripture about healing and watched the person they were standing for slip away anyway.

This is not a comfortable topic. There are no easy answers here. And I want to say that plainly before we go any further because one of the most harmful things a person can do in this territory is arrive with too many answers too quickly.

What I want to offer today is not resolution. It is honest company in one of the most disorienting places the Christian life can take you.

The Questions This Produces

When you pray for someone and they don’t get better, it doesn’t just produce grief. It produces questions. And the questions are often harder to carry than the grief itself.

Did I not pray hard enough? Did I not have enough faith? Was there something wrong with my prayer the words I used, the posture I held, the level of belief I brought to it? Did God hear me at all? Does prayer actually do anything?

And underneath all of those the one that is almost too frightening to say out loud: does God care about this specific person the way I was told He does?

These questions are not faithless. They are honest. And they deserve honest engagement rather than the deflection that sometimes passes for comfort God’s ways are higher than our ways, He has a plan, everything happens for a reaso offered quickly, before the person has been allowed to fully feel the weight of what they’re carrying.

The disciples asked Jesus questions that were just as raw. Thomas demanded physical proof. The disciples in the storm woke Jesus up and essentially accused Him of not caring that they were drowning. The Psalms are full of people demanding that God explain Himself. Job argued his case before God for thirty-five chapters.

None of them were struck down for the questions. None of them were told their faith was insufficient. And neither will you be.

What the Bible Says About Unanswered Prayer

The honest answer is that the Bible does not give a single, comprehensive, fully satisfying explanation for why some prayers are answered and others are not. If someone tells you they have that answer, be gently skeptical. The greatest theological minds in Christian history have wrestled with this and arrived at humility rather than certainty.

What the Bible does give us is several things worth holding.

It tells us that God’s ways are genuinely higher than our understanding. Isaiah 55:8–9 says His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. This is not a dismissal. It is a reminder that we are working with incomplete information that the view from inside the story is necessarily partial, and that what looks like an unanswered prayer from our perspective may be something different from God’s.

It tells us that the prayer was not wasted. This is important. The act of intercession of bringing someone before God, of standing in the gap for them, of asking on their behalf is not rendered meaningless by the outcome. James 5:16 says the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. The power and effectiveness are not always visible to us. But they are not contingent on the outcome matching our request.

It tells us that God is present in the suffering even when He does not remove it. Romans 8:28 says He works in all things not that all things are good, but that He is working in them. The unanswered healing prayer is not outside the reach of that promise. God was present in the illness, in the decline, in the loss. Working in ways that may only be visible later, if at all this side of eternity.

And it tells us through the cross that God is not distant from suffering. He did not watch it from a safe remove. He entered it. The Son of God died. Which means whatever you are feeling in the aftermath of an unanswered prayer the confusion, the grief, the sense of abandonment God is not unfamiliar with it from the outside. He knows it from the inside.

The Specific Grief of the Intercessor

There is a grief that belongs specifically to the person who prayed that is distinct from the grief of the loss itself and it deserves to be named.

When you intercede for someone and they don’t get better, you carry something that other grieving people don’t necessarily carry: the weight of having believed. Having stood on something. Having brought your faith to bear on the situation with everything you had and having watched the situation unfold differently than you believed it would.

That specific weight the collision between what you believed and what happened can do something to a person’s faith that simple grief does not. It can make you afraid to believe again. Afraid to pray with that kind of intensity again. Afraid that the next time you bring your full faith to bear on something, you will be disappointed again in the same devastating way.

And that fear is worth acknowledging because if it goes unexamined, it quietly produces a self-protective distance in prayer. You keep praying, but with less of yourself. You believe, but you hold something back. You love, but you don’t let yourself hope quite as fully as you used to. Because hope, when it was most full, led to the most painful disappointment.

This is one of the most significant and least discussed wounds in the Christian life. And it needs gentle, honest, patient attention not dismissal, not quick reassurance, not a verse dropped on top of it before it has been allowed to breathe.

The Story of Lazarus What We Miss

In John 11, Lazarus was sick. His sisters Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus: “Lord, the one you love is sick.” They were not asking for anything directly. They were simply telling Him. Trusting that His love for Lazarus would be sufficient motivation.

And Jesus stayed where He was for two more days.

By the time He arrived, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Martha came out to meet Him and said with a grief and a faith and a quiet accusation all woven together into one sentence: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

If you had been here.

She believed in His power. She had seen it. She knew He could have healed Lazarus. And He hadn’t come. And her brother was dead. And she was standing in front of Jesus saying: I know You could have prevented this. And You didn’t.

Jesus did not correct her. He did not defend His timing. He asked to be taken to the tomb. He saw Mary weeping and the people who had come to comfort her weeping. And He wept.

The Son of God, who knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, wept.

Not as a performance. Not as a pastoral technique. Because grief was present and He entered it. Because the people He loved were in pain and He sat in the pain with them before He resolved it.

And then He raised Lazarus.

But here is what I want you to hold: most of the people reading this are in the space between Martha’s if you had been here and the moment outside the tomb. They are in the grief that has not yet resolved. They are in the weeping that hasn’t given way to the miracle yet. And they may be there for a long time. Or they may be there permanently, on this side of eternity.

What Jesus did in that in-between space was weep with the people who were weeping. He did not skip to the resolution. He sat in the grief. He was present in it. He entered it fully before He moved through it.

He will do the same for you.

What to Do When the Prayer Wasn’t Answered

Give yourself permission to grieve the unanswered prayer specifically not just the loss of the person but the collision between your faith and the outcome. Name it. Bring it to God. Lord, I prayed and they didn’t get better. I believed and the thing I believed for didn’t happen. I don’t understand that and I am grieving it and I need You to be present with me in the not understanding.

Don’t let anyone rush you to the theological framework before you’ve grieved. The lesson, the purpose, the silver lining those things may come, in time, with space and prayer and the perspective that distance sometimes provides. But they cannot be rushed. And they cannot be received by a person who hasn’t been allowed to grieve first.

Be honest about what this has done to your faith because the wound that goes unexamined is the one that quietly shapes everything from underneath. If you are afraid to pray with full faith again, say so. To God. To a trusted person. Bring it into the light where it can be treated rather than managing it in the dark where it will quietly grow.

And hold onto this: the unanswered prayer is not the last word on God’s character. Your grief is real. Your confusion is legitimate. Your faith is bruised. And God the God who wept at Lazarus’s tomb before He walked out of His own is with you in every single moment of all of it.

He has not abandoned you. He has not written off the person you prayed for. He is working in ways that your current view cannot encompass. And He is present in the grief that the unanswered prayer has produced sitting in it with you, weeping with those who weep, waiting with you in the not-yet.

A Story

Linda prayed for her husband’s cancer for three years. Every day. With other people, alone, at church, in the car, in the middle of the night when the fear woke her up. She believed with everything she had.

He died on a Tuesday in March.

She said the grief of losing him and the grief of the unanswered prayer were two separate things and she had to mourn them separately. The loss of him. And the loss of the faith she thought she had the version of faith that believed hard enough meant the answer would come.

She almost stopped praying entirely. For a year she went through the motions but kept something held back. She was afraid of the full thing again.

What brought her back was a conversation with a woman in her grief group who had been through something similar. The woman said: the unanswered prayer broke something in me. But what grew back in its place was more honest. I stopped praying for outcomes and started praying for presence. And I found that presence in ways I never had before the loss.

Linda said that reframe from praying for outcomes to praying for presence was the beginning of something new in her. Not a replacement for what she’d lost. But something real. Something that held in a way the old framework hadn’t.

She said: I don’t understand why he didn’t get better. I may never understand it. But I am not alone in the not understanding. And that has been enough to keep me going.

Journal Prompts:

1. Who have you prayed for that didn’t get better and have you allowed yourself to grieve the unanswered prayer specifically, not just the loss?

2. What has the unanswered prayer done to your faith and have you brought that honestly to God?

3. What would it mean to shift from praying for outcomes to praying for presence in the hardest situations?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I prayed and they didn’t get better. I believed and the thing I believed for didn’t come. I don’t have words for what that did to me to my faith, to my understanding of who You are and how You work. So I’m bringing the confusion and the grief and the bruised faith to You today not because I have it resolved but because I don’t know where else to take it. Be present with me in the not understanding. Weep with me the way You wept outside Lazarus’s tomb. And hold the faith that I can barely hold right now until I have the strength to hold it myself again. I trust You even here. Even in this. Even when I don’t understand. Amen.

It is not just the calendar changing. It is something more layered than that the particular quality of late August light, the way the evenings start getting shorter before you’re ready for them to, the sense that something easy and open and unhurried is giving way to something more structured and demanding.

For some of you the end of summer brings genuine grief. The kids are going back to school and the house will be quieter than you’re ready for. The vacation is over and the return to ordinary life feels heavier than it did before you left. The season that felt like space and rest is closing, and what’s coming feels like a wall of obligation rather than an open door.

For others the transition brings anxiety. New grade, new school, new job, new season the uncertainty of what’s ahead sitting in your chest like a stone.

And for others still the ones who had a hard summer, the ones who spent these months in grief or struggle or a season that didn’t match the brightness the world expected of it there is something almost like relief. The permission to close one chapter and begin another.

Wherever you are as this season turns these five verses are for you.

Verse 1: Ecclesiastes 3:1

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

The Preacher of Ecclesiastes was not a naive optimist. He was a man who had looked at life all of it, the beautiful and the brutal and arrived at a conclusion that is both humbling and freeing: life moves in seasons. Not in a straight line. Not in a constant upward arc of progress and improvement. In seasons. Each one with its own texture, its own demands, its own gifts.

What this means practically is that the season ending does not have to be mourned as a loss. It can be released as a completion. Summer did what summer does. It gave what it gave. And now it is giving way to something else not something worse, something different. Something that has its own gifts if you will look for them.

The God who designed seasons designed them all. Not just the bright easy ones. The turning ones too. The ending and beginning ones. He is as present in the September morning as in the July afternoon. The season changes. He doesn’t.

Carry this verse into the transition: Whatever you are closing right now a chapter, a season, a version of your life that is giving way to the next one it is okay to let it end. God is in the endings as much as the beginnings.

Verse 2: Lamentations 3:22–23

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

New every morning. Not new every summer. Not new every season. Every morning.

As summer ends and the mornings start arriving differently darker a little earlier, cooler at the edges this verse is the reminder that what meets you in each new morning is not the accumulated weight of the season that just ended. It is fresh mercy. New compassion. The faithfulness of a God who does not carry forward yesterday’s account.

Whatever the summer held the things that went well, the things that didn’t, the ways you fell short of who you wanted to be, the hopes that didn’t materialize, the unexpected gifts you’re still grateful for none of it determines what this new season holds. The mercy is new. The faithfulness is constant. The slate, if not clean in the human sense, is met with fresh grace in the divine one.

Carry this verse into the transition: The new season does not begin with the weight of the last one on its back. It begins with new mercy. Receive it.

Verse 3: Isaiah 43:19

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

God specializes in new things. Not just renewal genuine newness. The thing you couldn’t have predicted. The path through the place that looked pathless. The stream in the middle of the dry ground.

As summer ends and a new season begins, this verse is an invitation to look for what God is doing that is genuinely new not just the continuation of what was, not just the recycling of the familiar, but something that hasn’t existed before. A new relationship. A new understanding of yourself. A new capacity that the summer built in you that you haven’t fully recognized yet. A new door that is opening even as another one closes.

The question God asks is worth sitting with: do you not perceive it? He is doing something new. The question is whether you are paying attention or whether the distraction of what is ending is making you miss what is beginning.

Carry this verse into the transition: Pay attention. Something new is already happening. Ask God to give you eyes to see it before it becomes obvious.

Verse 4: Philippians 4:11

“I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”

Paul wrote this from prison. Which means contentment, in his framework, is not about circumstances being comfortable. It is about an interior orientation that does not rise and fall with exterior conditions.

The end of summer is a good moment to examine your own contentment to ask honestly where it is rooted. If it is rooted in the season being good, in the conditions being favorable, in the ease and openness that summer can provide then it will leave with the season.

But if it is rooted in something more durable in the unchanging faithfulness of God, in the knowledge of who you are and whose you are, in the settled trust that God is working regardless of the season then it is something no calendar change can take from you.

Contentment is not something you find. It is something you learn as Paul says, through the variety of conditions, through the seasons that are easy and the ones that are hard, through the practice of returning to the unchanging things when the changing things shift.

Carry this verse into the transition: What are you rooted in? If it is the summer the ease, the light, the open schedule examine what that means for the coming season. And ask God to root you in something that doesn’t change when the calendar does.

Verse 5: Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

We have visited this verse before in this newsletter. But it belongs here, at the turning of the season, in a specific way.

The plans God has for you did not expire with the summer. They are not on hold while the new season finds its rhythm. They are active, ongoing, present already woven into the fabric of what is coming, already present in the new mornings that are arriving.

Whatever you are stepping into the new school year, the new work season, the new chapter that began when something else ended God has already been there. He is not waiting to see how it unfolds. He is in it. Holding it. Working in it. Moving through it toward a future that is good.

The hope is not in the season being easy. It is in the God who is present in every season the bright ones and the turning ones and the ones you’re not sure about yet.

Carry this verse into the transition: You are not stepping into the new season alone. The God who knows the plans is already there. Walk in.

A Closing Word

Seasons end. That is not a failure it is the design. The God who made spring also made fall. The God who made the long summer evenings also made the crisp September mornings. He is in all of it the opening and the closing, the bright and the turning, the ending and the beginning that is already underway.

Go into this new season with open hands. Release what summer held. Receive what fall is bringing. And trust the God who is the same in every season faithful, present, working, and good.

2. Which of these five verses speaks most directly to what you’re carrying into the new season?

3. What is one thing you want to be intentional about in the coming season that you weren’t in the last one?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, summer is ending and I have feelings about that I haven’t fully sorted. There are things I’m releasing with relief and things I’m releasing with grief and things I didn’t get to that I was hoping for. I bring all of it to You as this season turns. Thank You for what the summer held even the hard parts, even the unexpected parts, even the parts that didn’t go the way I planned. And as I step into what’s next give me eyes to see what You’re already doing there. Roots that don’t shift with the seasons. And a trust in Your plans that carries me through every transition, every ending, every new beginning that I didn’t see coming. Amen.

Trust, once broken, does not simply repair itself with time.

This is one of the most painful discoveries a person can make and one of the most common. We are told that time heals all wounds, that forgiveness restores relationships, that love is enough to overcome betrayal. And while there is truth in each of those things, they are incomplete in a way that leaves people confused and hurt when they find that the passage of time, the act of forgiveness, and the presence of love have not automatically repaired what was broken.

Trust is not a feeling. It is a structure. And when that structure is damaged by betrayal, by infidelity, by deception, by the discovery that someone was not who you believed them to be the repair of it is a specific, demanding, often slow process that requires more than goodwill and more than time.

The person who was betrayed and is trying to figure out whether and how to trust again. And the person who broke the trust and is trying to understand what rebuilding actually requires of them.

Both positions are painful. Both deserve honest, practical, compassionate attention.

What Betrayal Actually Does to a Person

Before we talk about rebuilding, it is worth understanding what betrayal actually does because the effects are more comprehensive than most people realize, and understanding them is the beginning of treating them honestly rather than minimizing them.

Betrayal is not just an emotional wound. It is a disorienting one. When someone you trusted a spouse, a friend, a parent, a leader reveals themselves to be other than you believed, it doesn’t just hurt you. It calls into question your own perception. Your ability to read people. Your judgment. The story you thought you were living inside.

People who have been significantly betrayed often describe a sense of unreality of not being able to trust their own experience of the past, because if they were wrong about this person in this way, what else were they wrong about? The ground shifts. Not just the relationship but the entire framework through which they understood their world becomes suddenly uncertain.

This is why rebuilding trust is never just about the other person changing. It is also about the betrayed person doing the hard work of recovering their own sense of reality of learning, slowly and carefully, to trust their own perceptions again.

And it is why rushing the process either through premature forgiveness that hasn’t dealt honestly with the wound, or through pressure from outside parties to move on before the person is ready almost always makes things worse rather than better.

What Forgiveness Is and What It Isn’t

Colossians 3:13 calls us to forgive as the Lord forgave us. This is one of the most important and most misapplied instructions in all of Scripture because forgiveness is widely misunderstood in ways that cause real harm.

Forgiveness is not the same as trust. These two things get conflated constantly in churches, in counseling offices, in well-meaning conversations between people who love you and the conflation produces enormous confusion and pain.

Forgiveness is a decision you make about the debt. It is the choice to release the other person from what they owe you to stop trying to collect, to hand the account to God rather than carrying it yourself. It is primarily about your own freedom. The person who forgives is released from the weight of carrying the debt. That is the primary beneficiary of forgiveness not the person forgiven but the person forgiving.

Trust is something different. Trust is built on a track record. It is the reasonable conclusion that someone is reliable, honest, and safe a conclusion that is built over time through consistent, demonstrated behavior. Trust cannot be decided. It cannot be granted by an act of will. It has to be earned and when it has been broken, it has to be re-earned, which takes time and evidence.

You can forgive someone completely and still not trust them. You can release the debt and still require evidence of change before you re-extend access to your heart. These two things are not in conflict. Forgiveness does not require you to pretend that nothing happened or to restore full access before the trust has been rebuilt.

Anyone who tells you otherwise who uses the language of forgiveness to pressure you into premature trust is misusing Scripture in a way that could genuinely harm you.

What the Person Who Broke the Trust Must Understand

If you are the person who broke the trust through infidelity, through deception, through a betrayal of any kind there are things you need to understand clearly, because misunderstanding them will make the rebuilding impossible.

The rebuilding is your responsibility, not theirs. You do not get to set the timeline. You do not get to decide when enough time has passed or when enough has been done. You do not get to grow impatient with the pace of the other person’s healing and communicate directly or indirectly that they should be over it by now. The timeline belongs to the person who was hurt. Your job is to show up faithfully within that timeline, however long it takes, without making your consistency contingent on their pace of healing.

Transparency is not optional. One of the most common mistakes people make after breaking trust is returning to a version of the relationship that looks normal on the outside while maintaining privacy in the areas where the betrayal occurred. This does not rebuild trust. It maintains the same conditions under which the trust was broken and the person who was hurt knows it, even if they can’t always articulate it. Genuine rebuilding requires genuine transparency the uncomfortable, sometimes humiliating openness that gives the other person real information rather than a performance of trustworthiness.

Defensiveness is the enemy of rebuilding. When the person you hurt asks questions, expresses pain, or needs to revisit what happened, your defensiveness however understandable it feels communicates that you are more concerned with your own comfort than with their healing. Receiving their pain without defending yourself is one of the most important and most difficult things required of the person who broke the trust. It does not mean accepting false accusations. It means sitting with the legitimate pain of the person you hurt without making it about you.

Consistency over time is the only currency that rebuilds trust. Not grand gestures. Not a single dramatic act of repentance. Consistent, faithful, transparent behavior over an extended period of time behavior that matches your words, that demonstrates that the change is real, that gives the other person actual evidence to work with. This is slow. It is unsexy. It is not a one-time event. It is a long, faithful practice. And it is the only thing that actually works.

What the Person Who Was Betrayed Must Navigate

If you are the person who was betrayed, the path forward is its own specific kind of demanding.

You are allowed to take time. The pressure to move on, to forgive quickly, to get back to normal whether it comes from the person who hurt you, from friends and family, from your own impatience with your own pain can be enormous. And it is worth resisting. Healing from genuine betrayal is not a quick process. It is not linear. It does not proceed on a schedule that is convenient for anyone. Give yourself the time it actually takes rather than the time you wish it took.

You are allowed to ask questions. Rebuilding trust requires information. It requires understanding what happened, how it happened, and why not to punish the other person endlessly but to build a realistic picture of what you’re dealing with. If the other person is unwilling to answer your questions honestly, that is itself information about whether the trust can be rebuilt.

You are allowed to set conditions. Deciding to work toward rebuilding a relationship does not mean returning to it unconditionally. You are allowed to say: I am willing to work on this, and here is what I need in order to do that safely. Specific changes. Specific forms of transparency. Specific evidence over specific time periods. Conditions are not ultimatums they are the reasonable requirements of a person who has been hurt and is carefully, thoughtfully deciding whether and how to re-extend trust.

You are not required to rebuild. This is perhaps the hardest thing to say, and the most important. Forgiveness is required of us as followers of Jesus. Reconciliation is not always possible or safe. There are situations particularly those involving ongoing abuse, manipulation, or repeated patterns of betrayal where the most faithful thing you can do is forgive from a safe distance and not return to the relationship. Forgiveness releases you from the debt. It does not require you to return to the scene of the wound.

When Rebuilding Is Possible and What It Looks Like

When both people are genuinely committed to the work when the person who broke the trust is willing to do the long, humbling, consistent work of rebuilding it, and the person who was hurt is willing to give the process time and real observation rebuilding is possible. Not easy. Not quick. But genuinely possible.

And the relationships that come out the other side of genuine rebuilding are often, remarkably, stronger than the ones that existed before the betrayal. Not because the betrayal was good. Because the process of rebuilding requires a level of honesty, vulnerability, and genuine knowing of each other that many relationships never reach without the crisis that forced it.

The couples who have done the work who sat in the pain, who asked the hard questions, who showed up faithfully over time often say their marriage is more real, more honest, more genuinely intimate than it was before. Not that they would have chosen the path. But that the path produced something they couldn’t have reached any other way.

That is not a promise. It is a possibility. And it is only available to the people willing to do the work.

What God Knows About Broken Trust

Here is the thing that grounds all of this in something more than human effort and human willingness:

God knows exactly what it is to have trust broken by the people He loves.

The entire narrative of Scripture is the story of a God who keeps showing up for people who keep walking away. Who keeps extending faithfulness to people who have not been faithful in return. Who keeps offering restoration to people who have broken the covenant again and again.

He is not naive about it. He knows the full record. He sees everything that has happened and everything that will happen and He keeps coming back. Not because the trust was never broken. Because His love is more durable than the breaking.

This does not mean you are required to do what God does. You are not God. Your capacity for extended faithfulness to people who have betrayed you is finite and human and real. And there are situations where wisdom requires distance rather than continued exposure.

But it does mean that the God you are bringing this to the wound of broken trust, the exhausting work of rebuilding it, the fear that it can’t be done is a God who understands this territory from the inside. Who has lived it. Who is not dispensing advice from a comfortable distance.

He knows the cost of trusting people who break trust. And He is with you in the specific, painful, hope-requiring work of figuring out what comes next.

A Story

David and Michelle had been married for eleven years when David discovered that Michelle had been lying to him for three of them not infidelity, but financial deception. Secret accounts, hidden debt, a version of their financial life that didn’t match reality. The discovery felt like the ground had been pulled out from underneath him. He didn’t just lose trust in her. He lost trust in his own ability to see clearly.

They almost didn’t make it. There were months where David wasn’t sure he wanted to. The pain was that complete.

What changed was not a single moment but a long accumulation of small ones. Michelle stopped defending herself and started listening. She gave him access to everything every account, every password, every financial decision. She answered every question he asked, even when it was the same question he’d asked three times before, because she understood that the question wasn’t really about the information it was about whether she would keep showing up.

David started seeing a counselor not couples counseling initially but his own work on his own wounds. He started separating his legitimate grief from the story he was building around it. He started, slowly and carefully, to let the evidence he was actually seeing replace the fear of what might still be hidden.

Three years later they both describe their marriage as something they couldn’t have imagined in the early months. Not because the betrayal was forgotten. Because the rebuilding produced something real a genuine knowing of each other, a genuine choosing of each other, that the comfortable years before hadn’t required.

David said: I would not have chosen this path. But I am grateful for where it led. We know each other now in a way we didn’t before. That’s not nothing.

1. Where has trust been broken in your life and have you allowed yourself to fully grieve that rather than moving past it too quickly?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, trust has been broken in my life and the wound is real and deep and not as healed as I sometimes pretend it is. I bring it to You today honestly. The pain of it. The confusion of it. The way it made me question not just the person but my own ability to see clearly. If rebuilding is the path give me wisdom about what that requires and courage to walk it honestly. If distance is the wiser path give me the grace to forgive without returning to a place that isn’t safe. And in all of it remind me that You are the God who knows what broken trust feels like from the inside. Who keeps showing up for people who have walked away. Who is more faithful than any of us deserve. Be my foundation when I don’t know who else to trust. Amen.

It doesn’t announce itself as fear. It shows up dressed as responsibility, as care, as the weight of being someone that other people are counting on. It sits in the chest of the parent who lies awake wondering if they’re doing enough. It follows the spouse who is trying to hold everything together while quietly terrified that they’re not. It shadows the person who has been the strong one in their family for so long they can’t remember what it felt like not to be.

It is the fear of failing the people who need you.

Not failure in the abstract failure in the specific, personal, irreversible sense. The fear that you will make a mistake your child carries into adulthood. That you will not be enough for your spouse in the moment it matters most. That the people whose lives are built in some part around your presence and your faithfulness will discover, at the worst possible moment, that you were not as solid as they thought.

This fear is so common and so rarely named because it lives inside the people who are most concerned with the wellbeing of others and those people have a hard time shifting the focus to themselves long enough to acknowledge what they’re carrying.

Where This Fear Usually Comes From

The fear of failing the people who need you almost never arrives from nowhere. It has roots specific, traceable roots that are worth understanding because unnamed roots have a way of producing fruit you don’t recognize as coming from them.

Sometimes the root is having been failed yourself. The parent who wasn’t there when you needed them. The person who was supposed to be reliable and wasn’t. The early experience of someone you depended on letting you down in a way that left a mark. And the determination sometimes conscious, sometimes not that you would never do that to anyone else. That you would be the thing you didn’t have.

That determination is not bad. It can produce extraordinary faithfulness and genuine care. But it can also produce an impossible standard a performance of reliability that leaves no room for your own limitations, your own needs, your own humanity. And underneath the performance is the fear: if I ever fall short, if I ever need more than I give, I will become the very thing that hurt me.

Sometimes the root is perfectionism the belief that love means never making a mistake. That a good parent doesn’t say the wrong thing. That a good spouse doesn’t have hard seasons. That a good friend is always available and always has the right words. Perfectionism takes the genuine desire to love well and turns it into an impossible standard that guarantees eventual failure and then uses that failure as evidence of what you feared about yourself all along.

Sometimes the root is simply the weight of circumstances of actually being the person whose steadiness other people genuinely depend on. The single parent who is the only adult in the house. The caregiver who has no one to hand things off to. The person whose family would fall apart without them. Sometimes the fear is not irrational. It is a reasonable response to real responsibility.

Whatever the root the fear is real. And it deserves honest attention.

What the Fear Does to You

The fear of failing the people who need you is one of the most quietly exhausting things a person can carry because it never takes a day off.

It is there in the morning when you wake up and immediately start calculating what the day requires and whether you have enough to meet it. It is there in the moments when you’re giving everything you have and wondering if everything you have is enough. It is there in the rare moments of rest when you’ve finally sat down, finally exhaled and it taps you on the shoulder and asks: should you really be resting? Is there something you should be doing?

It produces a particular kind of tiredness that is not resolved by sleep. A tiredness that comes from being permanently on permanently available, permanently responsible, permanently alert to the needs of the people around you while quietly neglecting the needs of yourself.

And it produces something else that is worth naming: it makes genuine connection harder. When you are primarily concerned with performing reliability rather than actually being present, you are not fully there. You are managing. You are maintaining. You are giving people a version of yourself that is carefully curated to never fail which means they are not getting the real you. They are getting the performance of you.

And the people who love you need the real you far more than they need the performance.

The Disciples Were Afraid of This Too

In John 14, Jesus told the disciples He was leaving. And they were terrified not just for themselves but because of what His absence would mean for the people they were being sent to. They were about to be responsible for something enormous. The mission. The church. The continuation of everything Jesus had started. And they were going to have to do it without Him physically present.

Jesus’s response to their fear is one of the most tender passages in the Gospel: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”

He didn’t minimize the weight of what they were being asked to carry. He didn’t pretend the responsibility wasn’t real or that it wouldn’t be hard. He acknowledged it and then redirected their trust from their own capacity to His ongoing presence.

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.

They would not be doing this alone. The responsibility was real. The weight was real. And the One who had called them to carry it would be with them in the carrying.

That is the word for the person who is afraid of failing the people who need them. Not: you won’t fail. Not: the responsibility isn’t real. But: you are not doing this alone. The One who called you to love these people is present in the loving. He goes before you into the moments you’re most afraid of. And He does not leave you to face them without Him.

The Thing Your People Actually Need From You

Here is something worth sitting with because it runs counter to everything the fear tells you:

The people who need you do not primarily need your perfection. They need your presence.

They need to know that you are real. That you are trying. That when you get it wrong you come back and say so. That your love for them is not contingent on your performance being flawless but is something more durable and more honest than that.

The parent who never makes a mistake does not teach their child how to handle failure. The parent who makes mistakes and repairs them who says I was wrong, I’m sorry, I love you teaches their child something far more valuable: that failure is survivable, that love is durable, and that the people who love you will come back.

The spouse who is always strong does not give their partner a real person to be married to. The spouse who is sometimes undone, sometimes needy, sometimes the one who needs to be held rather than doing the holding that spouse is building a real marriage rather than a managed one.

Your people do not need you to be unfailing. They need you to be faithful which is a completely different thing. Faithfulness is not the absence of failure. It is the commitment to keep showing up, keep loving, keep coming back even after the moments you didn’t get it right.

And that the showing up, the coming back, the refusing to quit is something you can actually offer. Unlike perfection, which was never available and was never what they needed anyway.

What to Do With the Fear

The fear of failing the people who need you is not resolved by performing better. It is not resolved by trying harder or being more consistent or eliminating more margin for error. It is resolved slowly, imperfectly, in an ongoing way by doing a few specific things.

Name it. To yourself first. To God. Possibly to a trusted person. I am afraid of failing the people who need me. I carry this fear every day and I have never said it out loud. The naming matters because the fear operates most powerfully in the silence.

Separate what is in your control from what isn’t. You can control your effort, your presence, your willingness to repair when you get it wrong. You cannot control outcomes. You cannot guarantee that your love will protect the people you love from all pain. You cannot be responsible for results that belong to God. Drawing that line clearly and repeatedly is one of the most practically helpful things you can do with this fear.

Receive care as well as give it. The person who is always giving and never receiving is not modeling healthy love they are modeling a distorted version of it. Let someone take care of you sometimes. Let someone ask how you’re doing and give them the real answer. Let yourself need something and ask for it. Not because you’re weak because you’re human. And because the people who love you deserve the chance to love you back.

Trust the God who goes before you. Deuteronomy 31:8 says the Lord Himself goes before you into the situations you’re most afraid of. He is already in the moment you’re dreading the hard conversation, the decision you’re not sure about, the day you’re not sure you have enough for. He has already been there. And He will be there when you arrive.

You are not going into those moments alone. And that changes everything.

A Story

Sarah was the mother of two teenagers and the primary caregiver for her aging mother. Her husband worked long hours. She held everything the household, the kids’ schedules, her mother’s appointments, the emotional temperature of everyone around her and she held it without ever putting it down.

She came to her pastor one day not in crisis but in a quiet exhaustion she couldn’t name. She said: I’m just scared all the time that I’m going to drop something. That someone who needs me is going to need me and I’m not going to have anything left.

Her pastor asked: when was the last time someone took care of you?

She couldn’t remember.

He said: the fear you’re describing is real. But part of what’s feeding it is that you’ve made yourself an island. You’re trying to be the source for everyone and replenishing from nothing. You can’t sustain that and the people who love you wouldn’t want you to.*

She started small. She told her husband the truth about how tired she was. She asked her friend to come over not to help with anything but just to sit with her. She started praying in the morning not for everyone else first but for herself for the specific, personal, daily strength she needed.

She said: I realized I’d been trying to be the answer for everyone around me instead of trusting that God was the answer and I was just the delivery system. That shift changed everything.

1. Who specifically are you most afraid of failing and what does that fear feel like when it’s most present?

2. Where did the belief come from that love means never failing? What would it mean to release that standard?

3. When was the last time you let someone take care of you? What made it hard?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I carry the weight of the people who need me every single day and most days I carry it without telling anyone, including You, how heavy it is. Today I’m putting it down long enough to be honest. I am afraid. Afraid of not being enough. Afraid of the moment when someone I love needs me and I have nothing left to give. I know You go before me into those moments. I know You don’t send me into anything alone. Help me trust that today not just believe it theologically but actually rest in it. And remind me that my people need my presence more than my perfection. Give me the grace to be real with them. And to let them be real with me. Amen.

Not the intellectual arguments. Not the philosophical debates. This one. The personal, gut-level, impossible-to-dismiss question that arrives not in a theology class but in a hospital waiting room, at a graveside, in the middle of a night that won’t end:

What We Actually Mean When We Ask This Question

When someone asks why good people suffer, they are usually not asking a purely philosophical question. They are asking something personal. Something that sounds more like:

Does my faithfulness matter? Is goodness worth anything? Is God paying attention to the specific details of my specific life? And if He is what is He doing with what He sees?

Underneath the theological question is a relational wound. A feeling that the arrangement isn’t fair. That there should be some kind of correlation between how you live and what happens to you and the fact that the correlation keeps breaking down is not just intellectually troubling, it is personally painful.

And that pain deserves to be acknowledged before anything else. Because minimizing it rushing too quickly to the lesson or the purpose or the promise is one of the ways well-meaning faith can actually add to someone’s suffering rather than comfort it.

So let’s start here: it is okay to look at what is happening and say this is not fair. It is okay to feel the injustice of it. It is okay to bring the full weight of that feeling to God without immediately softening it with the right theological framing.

He can handle it. He has handled it before. And He is not waiting for you to resolve the question before He’ll be present with you in it.

What the Bible Actually Says And Doesn’t Say

The Bible does not promise that good people will be spared from suffering. This is one of the most important things to establish because a significant amount of the pain people feel in hard seasons is not just the suffering itself but the collision between what they expected and what is actually happening.

If you were taught explicitly or implicitly that faithfulness is a kind of protection from difficulty, then every hard thing that happens to you carries a secondary wound: the sense that the arrangement has been violated. That God didn’t hold up His end.

But that arrangement was never in the text.

Jesus said plainly in John 16:33: “In this world you will have trouble.” Not might have. Not will have if you make bad choices. Will have. The trouble is part of the landscape of human life in a broken world and Jesus never promised His followers exemption from it.

What He promised was something different and, ultimately, more durable: “But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Not: I will prevent you from experiencing the world’s difficulty. I have overcome it. Which means the trouble does not have the final word. It does not win. It is not the end of the story. But it is real, and it is present, and pretending otherwise does not help anyone.

The Book of Job and the Answer God Didn’t Give

If you want to wrestle seriously with the question of why good people suffer, you have to spend time in the book of Job. Because Job is the Bible’s most extended, most honest engagement with exactly this question and its answer is not what most people expect.

Job was, by the text’s own description, blameless and upright. He feared God and turned away from evil. He was generous, faithful, and genuinely good. And he lost everything his children, his wealth, his health in a series of catastrophes that had nothing to do with any failure on his part.

His friends came and sat with him for seven days in silence, which was the best thing they did. Then they started talking and everything they said, though it sounded theological and reasonable, was wrong. They kept insisting that Job must have done something to deserve this. That suffering is always the consequence of sin. That if he would just examine himself honestly, he’d find the cause.

Job refused. He maintained his innocence. He demanded an audience with God. He said the things that were true even when they were uncomfortable.

And then God showed up. In a whirlwind. And spoke for four chapters.

And He never answered the question.

He didn’t explain why. He didn’t give Job the backstory about the conversation with the adversary that we see in chapter one. He didn’t provide the theological framework that would have made the suffering make sense. He spoke about the vastness of creation, the depth of His own knowledge, the limits of human understanding and He asked Job a series of questions that had the cumulative effect of reminding Job of exactly who he was talking to.

And Job, in the presence of God, was undone. Not with more answers. With encounter.

This is not a satisfying ending in the way we want it to be. But it is an honest one. The book of Job does not resolve the question of suffering. It redirects it from the question of why to the question of who. Not why is this happening but who is with me in it. And is that enough.

What Suffering Actually Does

Romans 5:3–4 says something that is difficult to receive but important to sit with: “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

This is not a statement that suffering is good. It is a statement that God is so committed to the formation of the people He loves that He will work even in the worst material even in the suffering they didn’t deserve and didn’t choose to build something that could not have been built any other way.

Perseverance cannot be built in comfort. Character cannot be produced in ease. The specific kind of hope that Paul is describing the kind that holds in the darkest circumstances cannot be manufactured in seasons where there is nothing to hold on through.

This is not why suffering happens. It is what God does with it. There is a difference. God does not send suffering to teach you lessons. But He will not waste a single moment of the suffering that comes He will work in it, through it, underneath it, to produce something real in you that the easy seasons simply cannot.

The people who have been through the hardest things and come out the other side with genuine, unshakeable faith are not people who got an explanation. They are people who encountered a God who was present in the suffering and found that presence more solid than any answer would have been.

When the Suffering Belongs to Someone Else

Sometimes the question isn’t about your own suffering. It’s about watching someone you love suffer someone good, someone faithful, someone who didn’t deserve what they’re carrying.

And that is its own particular kind of anguish. Because you would take it from them if you could. And you can’t. And the helplessness of that the watching, the sitting beside, the not being able to fix it is one of the heaviest things a human being can carry.

What do you do with that?

You do what Jesus did at Lazarus’s tomb. You weep. You don’t rush to the resurrection before you’ve sat in the grief. You don’t cover the pain with the promise before you’ve acknowledged the reality of the loss. You weep with those who weep and you trust that the God who wept at that tomb is present at this one too.

And then you stay. You don’t fix. You don’t explain. You don’t hand them a Bible verse when what they need is a hand. You stay. You show up. You bring the meal and make the call and sit in the silence when there are no words.

That presence human presence, faithful presence, showing-up-and-staying presence is one of the primary ways God answers the question of suffering. Not with an explanation. With a person who refuses to leave.

The Answer That Isn’t an Answer and Why It’s Enough

The honest truth about the question of why good people suffer is that the full answer is not available to us this side of eternity. We see in part. We know in part. The view we have from inside the story is necessarily incomplete.

But here is what we do have:

We have a God who did not watch suffering from a safe distance. He entered it. He took on a body and felt hunger and exhaustion and grief and betrayal and physical agony. He went to the cross not because He deserved it but because love required it. Which means the God we are asking the question of is not a God who is unfamiliar with unjust suffering. He is a God who has been there.

We have a promise that the suffering is not the end. Romans 8:18 says the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed. Not that they don’t matter. Not that they aren’t real. But that they are not the final chapter. Something is coming that will reframe everything including this.

And we have a presence. The God who is with us in it not explaining it, not removing it, but present in it in ways that people who have been in the deepest suffering consistently report as more real, more solid, more sustaining than any answer could have been.

The question of why good people suffer does not have a complete answer. But the God at the center of the question is faithful, present, and working even here, even in this, even now.

And for the days when that has to be enough it is enough.

1. What specific suffering are you asking the why question about right now your own or someone you love?

2. Have you ever encountered God’s presence in a moment of suffering in a way that was more real than any explanation would have been? What was that like?

3. What would it mean to shift the question from why is this happening to who is with me in it?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I have questions I can’t resolve and pain I didn’t deserve and a why that You haven’t answered yet. I am bringing all of it to You today not the composed version, not the faithfully reframed version, but the raw, unresolved, genuinely hurting version. I trust that You are big enough to hold this. That You are not surprised by my questions or threatened by my honesty. Be present with me in this. Not with explanations with Yourself. That has always been the better answer. And on the days when I forget that remind me. Amen.

You are being formed right now.

Not in the big moments not in the church services or the retreats or the crisis prayers or the dramatic turning points. In the ordinary, unremarkable, afternoon of your life. In what you just clicked on. In how you just spoke to the person who interrupted you. In what you chose to do with the last fifteen minutes and what you’ll choose to do with the next fifteen.

You are being formed by your habits. Quietly, constantly, without fanfare. The small repeated choices you make every day are not neutral. They are not simply the texture of your life they are the material your character is being built from. And they are building something, whether you are paying attention or not.

This is one of the most important and most underemphasized ideas in all of Christian thought. We tend to focus on the dramatic the conversion, the crisis, the mountaintop experience, the moment everything changed. And those moments matter. But they do not form you. What forms you is what you do every day when nothing dramatic is happening.

Galatians 6:7 says it with agricultural clarity: you reap what you sow. Not what you intended to sow. Not what you thought about sowing. What you actually sowed repeatedly, over time, in the ordinary unremarkable soil of your daily life.

The harvest is always downstream of the planting. And the planting is always happening in your habits, in your routines, in the small repeated choices that feel too insignificant to examine carefully.

They are not insignificant. They are everything.

What a Habit Actually Is

Before we talk about what your habits are doing to your soul, it helps to understand what a habit actually is because most of us underestimate how much of our daily life is running on autopilot.

Neuroscientists estimate that roughly 40 to 45 percent of what you do every day is not a conscious decision it is a habit. A pattern encoded in your brain through repetition that now runs automatically, without requiring deliberate thought. The route you drive to work. The way you respond when you’re stressed. The first thing you reach for when you sit down. The tone you use with certain people. The thing you do when you’re bored or lonely or anxious.

You didn’t decide to do any of those things in the moment. They happened because the pattern was so deeply grooved by repetition that your brain executes it without asking for your input.

This is genuinely useful when the habits are good you don’t have to use willpower to brush your teeth every morning because it’s so deeply automated you just do it. But it means that bad habits are not primarily a willpower problem. They are a pattern problem. The pattern is running. And the only way to change it is to interrupt the pattern and replace it with a different one repeatedly, over time, until the new pattern becomes the automatic one.

Aristotle understood this long before neuroscience confirmed it. He said: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

You are not primarily what you decide in your best moments. You are what you do in your ordinary ones.

The Habits Nobody’s Examining

Most of us have examined the obvious habits the ones that feel explicitly spiritual or explicitly problematic. We know we should pray more and scroll less. We know the substance we’re reaching for too often is becoming a problem. We know the eating pattern or the spending pattern or the anger pattern is something we need to address.

But there is a category of habits that fly under the radar habits that don’t feel obviously spiritual but are quietly doing significant things to our souls. These are worth naming.

What you consume first thing in the morning. The first input of the day sets the cognitive and emotional tone for everything that follows. The person who wakes up and immediately opens news and social media is marinating their first conscious moments in outrage, comparison, and anxiety. That is not a neutral act. It is a habit that is forming the lens through which the entire day is filtered. And it is choosing, before anything else, to orient around what is loud and urgent rather than what is true and unchanging.

How you speak to yourself. The internal monologue is one of the most powerful and most overlooked habits in human life. What do you say to yourself when you make a mistake? What is the tone of the voice inside your head when you look in the mirror, when you fail, when you fall short? That voice is a habit a pattern developed over years of repetition and it is doing something to your soul every single day. Chronic self-condemnation is not humility. It is a habit that produces shame, paralysis, and a distorted view of who you are in God’s eyes.

What you do with silence. Most people in the modern world are allergic to silence. The moment quiet appears in the car, in the elevator, in the thirty seconds between activities the phone comes out or the earbuds go in. This is a habit. And it is a habit that is closing off the primary space in which God most often speaks. The capacity to be still, to be quiet, to be present without filling every moment with noise that capacity atrophies from disuse. And the soul that cannot tolerate silence is a soul that has lost access to one of the most important dimensions of its own inner life.

How you treat people who can do nothing for you. The waiter. The cashier. The person who holds a door you didn’t acknowledge. The colleague whose name you don’t know. How you treat people who have nothing to offer you is one of the most accurate measures of what your character is actually becoming because there is no social incentive to be kind to them. The kindness, if it exists, is coming from somewhere real.

What you do when nobody is watching. The choice you make with the browser tab when you’re alone. The way you drive when no one you know can see you. What you do with your time when there are no external obligations. The private habits are the most revealing ones because they are the ones your soul chooses when there is no performance required.

The Sowing and Reaping Reality

Galatians 6:7 is not a threat. It is a description of how reality works. You reap what you sow not as a punishment but as the natural, inevitable consequence of what you have been planting.

The person who has spent five years sowing seeds of bitterness rehearsing grievances, nurturing resentment, feeding the narrative of how they’ve been wronged will reap a harvest of bitterness. Not because God is punishing them, but because that is what bitterness seeds grow into. The harvest is built into the seed.

The person who has spent five years sowing seeds of gratitude noticing small gifts, thanking God in ordinary moments, choosing to name what is good rather than defaulting to what is wrong will reap a harvest of joy and contentment that has nothing to do with their circumstances and everything to do with what they’ve been planting.

The person who has spent five years sowing seeds of dishonesty the small evasions, the convenient half-truths, the habit of presenting a different version of themselves in different contexts will reap a harvest of a fractured self. The habit of dishonesty doesn’t stay contained in the moments you choose it. It slowly reshapes you into a person who has lost track of what is actually true about themselves.

The harvest is always downstream. You don’t see it while you’re sowing. But it is coming as certainly and as inevitably as spring follows the planting season.

This is why habits matter so much more than we typically treat them. Every small choice is a seed. And seeds, given time, produce harvests far larger than the seeds themselves.

The Habits That Build a Soul

The flip side of this is the most encouraging thing in Christian discipleship: the same mechanism that allows bad habits to slowly erode your soul allows good habits to slowly build it.

Slow. Not dramatically, not overnight, not in a way you’ll notice from week to week. But accumulated over months and years, the compound interest of good habits produces something remarkable.

The person who spends five minutes in prayer every morning for ten years has accumulated over three hundred hours of practiced conversation with God. Their prayer life doesn’t look impressive in any single day. But the person they have become over that decade the depth of their trust, the ease of their access to God, the instinctive turning toward Him in crisis is the harvest of ten years of five-minute seeds.

The person who reads one chapter of Scripture every morning for five years has read through the entire Bible multiple times. They didn’t feel that knowledge accumulating. But it is there shaping their thinking, informing their decisions, giving them a framework for navigating hard situations that people without that habit simply don’t have access to.

The person who has practiced gratitude actually written down or spoken aloud three things they’re grateful for every day for a year has literally rewired their brain toward a more positive baseline. Not because life got easier but because they sowed seeds of gratitude for long enough that a harvest of genuine contentment started coming in.

Small seeds. Faithful planting. Patient waiting for the harvest.

This is discipleship. Not the dramatic moments the daily planting.

How to Examine Your Habits Honestly

The most useful thing you can do with this article is not just read it but apply it. And application starts with honest examination.

Here are the questions worth sitting with not to condemn yourself but to see clearly, because you cannot change what you haven’t honestly looked at.

What is the first thing I reach for in the morning and what is that habit doing to the first hour of my day?

What do I do with unscheduled time and what does that choice reveal about what I’m actually hungry for?

What is the tone of my internal monologue and if a friend spoke to me the way I speak to myself, would I call it loving?

What am I consuming regularly in media, in conversation, in entertainment and what kind of person is that consumption slowly making me?

What habits am I most defensive about examining and why?

That last question is the most important one. The habits we resist examining are usually the ones doing the most work on our souls for better or worse.

Starting Small and Staying Honest

Here is the most practical piece of wisdom I can offer on habits: start smaller than you think you need to, and be more honest than you think is necessary.

Start smaller because the research on habit formation is clear big dramatic changes almost always fail because they rely on willpower, which is a finite and unreliable resource. The habit that survives is the one that is small enough to do on your worst day. Two minutes of prayer. One verse. One thing written in gratitude. Tiny. Sustainable. Seeds.

Be more honest because self-deception is the primary enemy of genuine formation. It is very easy to tell yourself you’re working on a habit when you’re actually just thinking about working on it. It is very easy to maintain the idea of yourself as a person who prays without actually praying. Honest examination maybe with a trusted friend, maybe in a journal, maybe in a regular honest conversation with God about what is actually happening in your interior life is what closes the gap between the person you imagine you’re becoming and the person you’re actually becoming.

Your habits are forming you. Every day. In the ordinary unremarkable minutes of your actual life.

The question is not whether formation is happening. It is whether you are participating in it intentionally or leaving it entirely to chance.

The Story

Tom was a man who considered himself a Christian but had never examined his habits through a spiritual lens. He prayed occasionally, attended church most Sundays, and thought of his faith as something he carried in a separate compartment from his daily life.

At 45, after a period of significant personal crisis, he sat down with a counselor who asked him to track what he actually did with his time for two weeks not what he thought he did, but what he actually did. He kept an honest log.

What he found surprised him. He was spending an average of three hours a day consuming news and social media almost all of it negative, almost all of it producing anxiety and outrage. He was spending less than ten minutes a day in any form of spiritual practice. He was speaking to himself with a harshness he would never direct at another person. And he was filling every moment of potential silence with noise.

He said: I thought my faith was in decent shape. But I had never asked what I was actually planting every day. When I looked honestly at the seeds, the harvest made complete sense.

He didn’t overhaul everything at once. He made one change. He stopped reaching for his phone first thing in the morning and spent the first five minutes of every day in prayer instead. Just that. One small seed, planted consistently.

Six months later he said something had shifted in him that he couldn’t fully explain a groundedness, a patience, a capacity for peace in circumstances that previously would have undone him. Not because of one dramatic spiritual experience. Because of one small seed, planted every morning, beginning to produce a harvest.

Journal Prompts:

1. What habit in your life if you’re honest about it is slowly eroding something in your soul?

2. What habit, if you planted it consistently for one year, would produce the most significant positive harvest in your character?

3. What is the one small seed you could plant starting tomorrow small enough to do on your worst day, consistent enough to matter over time?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I haven’t been paying attention to what I’ve been planting. I’ve been focused on the big moments while the small daily choices have been quietly forming me in directions I haven’t examined.

Today I want to see clearly not with condemnation but with honesty. Show me what my habits are doing to my soul. Show me the seeds I’ve been planting and the harvest they’re producing. And give me the wisdom to start small and the faithfulness to stay consistent. I want to be formed by You in the ordinary minutes, in the daily choices, in the unremarkable Tuesday of my actual life. Make something from the seeds I plant today. Amen.

Somewhere along the way you absorbed a timeline.

You probably didn’t choose it consciously. It assembled itself from a hundred different sources what your parents expected, what your peers seemed to be achieving, what culture said success should look like by certain ages, what you imagined for yourself when you were young enough to imagine freely. And somewhere in that assembling, a schedule emerged. A set of invisible milestones with invisible deadlines attached.

And now you’re measuring yourself against it.

Maybe you’re measuring your career against it and feeling behind the person you thought you’d be by now. Maybe you’re measuring your relationships and feeling the weight of a singleness you didn’t plan for, or a marriage that hasn’t become what you hoped, or a family that looks different from what you imagined.

Maybe you’re measuring your spiritual life and feeling behind some version of yourself that was supposed to be further along by now, more mature, more consistent, more put together.

The measurement is constant. And it produces a low-grade, persistent sense that you are running late to your own life.

Here is what I want to say to you today, as directly and as gently as I know how:

You are not behind. You are being prepared.

Those are not the same thing. And the difference between them is not just semantic it is the difference between living under condemnation and living inside a story that is still being written by a God who knows exactly what He is doing.

The Timeline Was Never His

The first thing worth establishing is this: the timeline you’ve been measuring yourself against was never God’s timeline. It was assembled from human sources culture, family, comparison, imagination and it has been functioning as a standard you were never actually meant to be held to.

God does not operate on a human schedule. This is one of the most consistent themes in all of Scripture and one of the most consistently difficult things for human beings to actually live inside.

Abraham was 75 years old when God called him to leave everything and go to a land he’d never seen. He was 100 when the son God promised finally arrived. By any reasonable human timeline, that was absurdly late. God’s response to Abraham’s timeline concerns was essentially: I know. Watch what I do.

Moses spent 40 years in the wilderness before God appeared to him in a burning bush and said: now. The thing I’m calling you to the thing you tried to do in your own strength forty years ago and failed catastrophically now is the time. Not then, but now.

Joseph spent his young adulthood in a pit and a prison not because God had lost track of the plan but because the plan required the preparation that only the pit and the prison could produce. The palace came later. The purpose was being built in the places that looked like delay.

David was anointed king as a teenager and didn’t sit on the throne for roughly fifteen years. Fifteen years of running from Saul, living in caves, learning things about leadership and trust and dependence on God that the throne itself never could have taught him.

None of these people were behind. They were all being prepared in the specific, sometimes painful, always purposeful way that only God’s timeline can produce. And every single one of them, from inside the waiting, could not have seen what we can see now from the outside looking in.

You cannot see it either. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

What the Preparation Actually Looks Like

Here is the honest truth about preparation: it rarely looks like preparation while you’re in it.

It looks like delay. It looks like dead ends. It looks like the door that won’t open, the opportunity that didn’t materialize, the season that has gone on longer than you thought you could bear. From the inside, preparation and being forgotten look remarkably similar. The difference is only visible from the outside, later, when you can see what was being built in the in-between.

Joseph could not see, from inside the prison, that his ability to interpret dreams was being positioned for the moment when Pharaoh would need someone who could do exactly that. He couldn’t see that the very relationships he was building in prison were the connections that would eventually open the door to the palace.

David could not see, from inside the caves, that every day of running from Saul was teaching him something about leading with justice rather than power something that would make him a different kind of king than the one who had been driven by insecurity and fear.

Moses could not see, from inside forty years of shepherding in the desert, that tending flocks in the wilderness was the exact preparation for leading a people through one.

The preparation happens in the hidden seasons. In the places that don’t look like anything important is occurring. In the waiting, the wandering, the not-yet.

And the enemy of your soul knows this which is why his primary strategy in the preparation season is to convince you that nothing is happening. That you are simply behind. That the delay is evidence of failure rather than formation.

Don’t believe it.

The Comparison That’s Killing Your Joy

Let’s name the specific thing that makes the behind-feeling so painful: comparison.

You are not just measuring yourself against an abstract timeline. You are measuring yourself against specific people. The friend who seems further along. The peer who hit the milestone first. The person your age who appears to have arrived at the place you’re still trying to reach.

And every time you measure, the measurement costs you something. Not because the other person’s success is hurting you it isn’t, not objectively. But because comparison is a zero-sum framework applied to a reality that is not zero-sum.

God’s plan for your life is not in competition with God’s plan for the person next to you. Their timing is not your timing. Their path is not your path. Their preparation season looked different from yours because what they are being prepared for is different from what you are being prepared for.

In John 21, Jesus had just given Peter a significant personal calling and Peter immediately looked at John and asked: what about him? Jesus’s response was one of the most clarifying things He ever said: “What is that to you? You must follow me.”

What is that to you.

Not: here is a detailed explanation of why John’s path looks different. Not: let me help you understand the comparison. Just: what does his path have to do with yours? Follow me.

The only meaningful question in your life is not how your timeline compares to someone else’s. It is whether you are following the One who is leading you on your path, at your pace, through your specific preparation season toward the specific thing He is preparing you for.

The Gifts Hidden in the Waiting

I want to push back gently on the idea that the waiting is purely something to endure a neutral, empty space between where you are and where you’re going that needs to be survived rather than inhabited.

The waiting is not empty. It is full of things that cannot be built any other way.

Character is built in the waiting. The patience, the perseverance, the capacity for delayed gratification, the ability to trust God when circumstances don’t confirm that trust these are not qualities that can be produced in seasons of immediate reward. They require the resistance of the wait. James 1:3–4 says the testing of your faith produces perseverance, and perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete. The maturity requires the testing. There is no shortcut.

Compassion is built in the waiting. The person who has never waited, never struggled, never had a plan that didn’t work out that person has a significant limitation in their capacity to sit with other people in their pain. The preparation seasons are building in you an empathy that the easy seasons cannot produce. The wound you’re carrying right now is the very thing that will allow you to reach someone else who is carrying the same wound.

Faith is built in the waiting. Not the easy faith that believes when everything is going well the real faith that holds on when nothing is visible, when the circumstances are not confirming the promise, when the only thing you have to stand on is the Word of a God you cannot currently see or feel. That faith the kind that doesn’t require external confirmation to stay standing is worth more than any milestone you could hit ahead of schedule.

The waiting is not wasted. It is the work.

A Story

Diane wanted to be a writer her entire life. She started her first novel at 24, spent seven years on it, and couldn’t get it published. She tried again at 31. Same result. She watched peers her age building writing careers while she was still working her day job, still trying, still being told no.

At 38 she almost stopped entirely. She told her husband: maybe this was never actually the calling. Maybe I’ve been wrong about this my whole life.

Her husband asked her one question: have you gotten better?

She thought about it. She had. Significantly. The writer she was at 38 was incomparably more skilled, more honest, more capable of saying something true than the one who had written the first novel at 24. The fourteen years of writing in obscurity, of failure, of watching others succeed while she waited all of it had built something in her craft that the early success would have bypassed entirely.

Her first published book came out at 41. It reached people in ways that no version of the book written at 24 could have reached them because the person who wrote it at 41 had lived enough, failed enough, and been prepared enough to say something that actually mattered.

She said: I thought I was behind. Turns out I was being made ready. The delay was the education.

Philippians 1:6 and the Promise That Holds

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

He who began. God started this. Your faith, your calling, your story He initiated it. You didn’t generate it from nothing. He began something in you, and that beginning was intentional and purposeful.

Will carry it on. Present tense. Active. Ongoing. In the waiting, in the preparation season, in the places that look like nothing is happening He is carrying it on. The work is not paused. It is not on hold while He attends to other things. It is actively, purposefully continuing.

You are not a abandoned project. You are a work in progress which means the current unfinished state is not the problem. It is the point. Unfinished things are things that are still being made.

You are not behind the life God is building. You are inside it. Right now, in this season, in the waiting and the preparation and the not-yet you are exactly where the work is happening.

Trust the Builder. Trust the timeline. Trust that the God who began something in you has not lost interest in finishing it.

The preparation is almost always longer than we want. And the thing it produces is always more than we could have built by rushing.

1. What specific timeline have you been measuring yourself against and where did it come from?

2. Looking back at a previous waiting season, what was being built in you then that you couldn’t see at the time?

3. What would change in how you carry today if you genuinely believed you were not behind but being prepared?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I confess that I have been living according to a timeline You never gave me measuring myself against milestones that were never Yours and finding myself perpetually behind. Today I want to release that. I want to trust that where I am is exactly where the work is happening that the waiting is not wasted, that the preparation is real, that You who began something in me have not lost interest in finishing it. Give me eyes to see what You are building in this season instead of eyes that are always looking at what I haven’t reached yet. I am not behind. I am Yours. And that is exactly enough. Amen.

There is a particular kind of pain that doesn’t announce itself loudly.

It doesn’t arrive with a crisis or a catastrophe. It doesn’t come with an obvious reason you could point to and say there, that’s why I feel this way. It just settles in quietly, over time, like a fog that arrives so gradually you don’t notice it until you’re already inside it and can’t see very far in any direction.

It is the feeling that God has forgotten you.

Not that He doesn’t exist. Not that you’ve stopped believing. Just that somewhere in the middle of managing everything He manages the billions of people, the turning of the world, the grand sweep of history your specific name, your specific situation, your specific prayers have somehow slipped through the cracks.

That other people are on His radar in a way you are not. That the silence you’ve been experiencing is not the silence of a God who is present and working but the silence of a God who has simply moved on and left you behind.

If you have felt this, you are in better company than you know.

The People in Scripture Who Felt This Way

This feeling is not a modern crisis of faith. It is as old as the people of God.

The Israelites in Babylonian exile said it plainly in Isaiah 49:14 the verse that comes just before our scripture today: “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.” These were not people on the fringes of faith. These were God’s own people, the ones He had chosen and called and brought through the Red Sea on dry ground. And they looked at their circumstances the exile, the destroyed temple, the silence that had stretched over years and said: He forgot us.

David wrote in Psalm 13: “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”Forever. He used the word forever the way you use it when something has gone on so long that forever starts to feel accurate.

Job said: “If only I knew where to find him; if only I could go to his dwelling!” He had been looking for God and couldn’t find Him. Not because God wasn’t there but because in the middle of extraordinary suffering, the presence of God had become impossible to feel.

Jeremiah. Elijah. Hagar in the desert. The disciples in the boat during the storm, Jesus apparently asleep in the back while the waves threatened to swallow them.

The feeling of being forgotten by God is one of the most universal experiences in the entire biblical record. Which means it is not a sign that something is uniquely wrong with you. It is a sign that you are fully, completely human and that you are walking a road that people of deep faith have walked before you.

What the Feeling Is Telling You (And What It Isn’t)

Here is the critical distinction that this feeling does not make on its own: the feeling of being forgotten is not the same thing as being forgotten.

Feelings are real. They matter. They tell us something about our interior state and they deserve to be taken seriously rather than dismissed. But feelings are not always accurate reporters of objective reality. You can feel unsafe in a perfectly safe place. You can feel unloved by someone who loves you deeply. You can feel forgotten by a God who has your name engraved on the palms of His hands.

That image in Isaiah 49:16 is one of the most intimate in all of Scripture. God says: I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. In the ancient world, people sometimes tattooed or engraved the names of their city or their beloved on their hands as a permanent reminder something always in view, impossible to forget.

God says that is what He has done with you. Your name. Permanently. On His hands.

Not in a file somewhere. Not in a database He occasionally accesses. On His hands the place He looks every moment of every day. The place that is always in view. The most visible, most constant reminder possible.

The feeling says: forgotten. The Word says: engraved. One of them is more reliable than the other. And the spiritual work of the dry, silent, forgotten-feeling season is learning slowly, sometimes painfully to trust the Word over the feeling.

Why God Sometimes Feels Silent

The silence of God is one of the most theologically complex and personally painful topics in the Christian life. And it deserves honest treatment rather than quick resolution.

Sometimes God is silent because He is working in ways that don’t produce immediate visible evidence. The most significant things happening in your life right now may be underground in the root system, below the visible waterline and the absence of obvious movement is not absence of movement.

Sometimes the silence is an invitation to a deeper kind of faith a faith that does not require constant confirmation, that can hold steady in the absence of obvious signs, that has learned to trust the character of God rather than the current circumstances.

Sometimes and this is the hardest one the silence is the answer. Not a no, not a withdrawal, but the specific communication of a God who is asking you to be still and trust in a season that does not feel still or trustworthy.

And sometimes let’s be honest we don’t know why. Job never got a full explanation. The disciples in the boat didn’t get an explanation they got Jesus waking up and calming the storm. The explanation came later, if at all.

What we get, in the silence, is the same thing they got: the presence of a God who is in the boat with us even when He appears to be asleep.

The Story of Hagar

In Genesis 16, Hagar was a woman with no power and no choices. An Egyptian slave in an Israelite household, she had been used by her mistress Sarai as a surrogate and then treated with contempt when the arrangement produced complications. Pregnant and fleeing, she ended up alone in the desert a slave, an outcast, invisible to every human system that might have helped her.

And God found her.

Not Abraham. Not Sarai. God. Specifically, personally, in the desert where no one else was looking.

He called her by name. He asked where she had come from and where she was going. He spoke to her situation with knowledge and care that no one else had shown. And she responded with one of the most stunning statements in Genesis: “You are the God who sees me.” El Roi. She named God the God who sees.

A slave, alone in a desert, feeling invisible to the entire world and she encountered a God who had been watching the whole time. A God who saw her specifically, in the specific place she was in, in the specific pain she was carrying.

That is the God of Isaiah 49. The God who cannot forget you because you are engraved on His hands. The God who finds you in the desert when you’ve concluded that no one is looking.

You are not invisible to Him. You are not a face in a crowd He’s lost track of. You are seen specifically, personally, completely by the God who named Himself the One who sees.

What to Do in the Forgotten-Feeling Season

The worst thing you can do in a season where God feels absent is make permanent decisions based on temporary feelings. Don’t walk away from your faith because of a season. Don’t make conclusions about God’s character based on a chapter that hasn’t finished yet.

The best thing you can do is what the Psalmists did: bring the feeling directly to God. Not the cleaned-up version the actual feeling. Lord, I feel forgotten. I have been praying and not hearing anything. I have been waiting and nothing seems to be moving. I feel like my name has slipped off Your list. I am bringing that to You today because I don’t know what else to do with it.

That prayer is not faithless. It is one of the most faithful things you can pray because it is turning toward God in the middle of the feeling rather than away from Him.

Then and this is the discipline choose to rehearse what you know rather than what you feel. Go back to the evidence. The moments God was present in your past. The prayers that were answered. The times you couldn’t see what He was doing and then, later, could. Build your case from the record rather than from the current silence.

And hold Isaiah 49:16 until it becomes more real than the feeling. Say it out loud if you have to. I am engraved on the palms of His hands. I am not forgotten. The silence is not abandonment. He sees me.

Say it on the days you don’t believe it. Say it especially on those days. Because faith, at its core, is choosing what God says over what circumstances suggest and that choosing, practiced in the forgotten-feeling seasons, is what builds a faith that nothing can shake.

The Turn That’s Coming

Here is what I know about the forgotten-feeling seasons: they end. Not always quickly. Not always in the way you expected. But they end.

And when they do when you look back from the other side you almost always discover that God was present in the silence in ways you couldn’t perceive at the time. That things were moving underground that only became visible later. That the very season that felt like abandonment was actually one of the most significant seasons of formation in your entire spiritual life.

Joseph spent years in a pit and a prison before the moment when everything God had been doing became clear. He didn’t know in the pit that the palace was coming. He couldn’t see from inside the prison what was being prepared outside it.

You can’t always see it either. But the God who engraved your name on His hands has not lost track of the story He is telling with your life.

He sees you. He has not forgotten. And the turn is coming.

1. How long have you been in the forgotten-feeling season? Have you told God honestly how it feels?

2. What is the most recent concrete evidence of God’s presence in your life even something small? What does remembering it stir in you?

3. What would it mean to choose the truth of Isaiah 49:16 over the feeling of being forgotten not because the feeling isn’t real but because the Word is more reliable?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I’m going to be honest I have felt forgotten. Like my prayers are going somewhere but not reaching You. Like everyone else is on Your radar and I’ve somehow slipped off it. I know that’s not what Your Word says.

But it’s what I feel. So I’m bringing the feeling to You today instead of managing it alone. You said You have engraved me on the palms of Your hands. I am choosing to believe that today not because I feel it, but because You said it and You don’t lie. Be near me in this silent season. Let me sense Your presence even if I can’t see Your movement. And remind me, when I forget, that You never have. Amen.

You are why I do this.

It’s not crisis. It’s not doubt in the dramatic sense. It’s just dry. The well that used to produce something when you came to it is coming up empty, and you don’t know why, and you’re not sure what to do about it.

Spiritual dryness is one of the most common experiences in the Christian life and one of the least talked about partly because it doesn’t feel dramatic enough to name, and partly because naming it feels like admitting something is wrong with you.

Nothing is wrong with you. Dry seasons are not evidence of spiritual failure. They are part of the landscape of a genuine, long-term faith. Every serious Christian you have ever admired has been in this place. The mystics called it the dark night of the soul. The Psalms are full of it. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Mother Teresa whose private journals revealed decades of interior dryness all walked through it.

The question is not whether it will happen. It is what you do when it does.

Here are five things that actually help honest, practical, grounded in Scripture and in the real experience of people who have been in the dry place and found their way through.

1. Stop Trying to Feel Something and Start Showing Up Anyway

The first and most important thing to do when faith feels dry is to keep showing up not because you feel like it, but because faithfulness is not a feeling.

We have been shaped by a culture that treats emotional resonance as the measure of authenticity. If it doesn’t move you, it isn’t real. If you don’t feel it, it doesn’t count. Applied to faith, this produces a person who only prays when prayer feels meaningful, only reads when the words come alive, only worships when the emotion is present and who gradually stops doing any of it because the feeling has gone quiet.

But the great tradition of Christian spirituality says something entirely different: the most important moments in your spiritual life are often the ones where you show up without feeling anything and do it anyway. The prayer that feels like it’s bouncing off the ceiling. The chapter read without a single verse landing. The Sunday morning attended while feeling nothing.

These are not wasted moments. They are the building of a faithfulness that does not depend on emotional weather and that is a far more durable thing than faith that only works when it feels good.

The monks called this fidelity the practice of showing up regardless of interior state. Not because the feelings don’t matter, but because the relationship is larger than the feelings. You show up to a marriage on the days you don’t feel romantic. You show up to a friendship on the days you’re too tired to be present. You show up to God on the dry days because the relationship is real whether you feel it or not.

Keep showing up, the feeling is not the faith, the showing up is the faith.

2. Change the Form, Not the Commitment

Sometimes dryness is not a spiritual problem it’s a format problem. The specific way you’ve been practicing your faith has stopped working for you, and what you need is not more of the same thing but a different approach to the same relationship.

If you’ve been reading the same devotional for two years and it has stopped landing try reading the Psalms instead. If structured prayer has gone flat try walking and praying out loud. If church has started to feel like going through the motions try a different service, a different seat, a different posture. If you’ve been doing the same quiet time routine for so long it has become mechanical change the time, change the location, change the format.

God is not format-dependent. He is not more present in one form of engagement than another. The format is just the vehicle and when the vehicle stops working, you don’t abandon the journey, you find a different one.

Some of the most significant spiritual breakthroughs people experience come not from trying harder in the same direction but from trying something different entirely. A prayer walk instead of a seated quiet time. Lectio Divina the ancient practice of slow, meditative Scripture reading instead of a reading plan. A contemplative service instead of a contemporary one. Journaling prayers instead of spoken ones.

The commitment stays. The form is flexible. Give yourself permission to change the form.

3. Go Back to the Last Place You Felt Something

When Elijah was in the wilderness, depleted and done, God didn’t give him a new vision or a new calling immediately. He fed him and rested him and then sent him on a journey back to Horeb, the mountain of God. Back to the place where Israel’s faith had its roots. Back to the beginning.

When faith feels dry, one of the most powerful things you can do is go back to the last place it felt alive. The moment of conversion, if you remember it. The season when God felt close. The specific prayer that was answered in a way that felt undeniable. The verse that broke something open in you.

Not to live in the past but to remind yourself that what you experienced was real. That the dryness you feel now is not evidence that it was never real. That the God who was present then is the same God who is present now, even when the presence is harder to feel.

Write it down if you have to. The specific moment and what happened, how it felt and what changed. Read it on the dry days as a reminder that the current season is not the whole story it is a chapter, and you have other chapters that tell a different story about the same God.

Gratitude for what was is one of the most reliable bridges to trust in what is.

4. Tell Someone the Truth About Where You Are

Spiritual dryness thrives in isolation. It feeds on the silence we keep around it the performance of okayness in community while the interior is parched.

One of the most consistently reported turning points in seasons of dryness is the moment someone told the truth about it to another person. Not a crisis confession just honest disclosure. I want you to know that faith has felt dry for me lately. I’m still showing up but I’m not feeling much. I’m telling you because I don’t want to carry it alone.

Something happens in that disclosure. Partly it’s the relief of not performing anymore. Partly it’s the discovery that the other person has been in the same place that you are not uniquely broken, that this is a common human experience that faithful people go through. Partly it’s the prayer that follows, which carries a different weight when someone who knows the real situation is praying alongside you.

James 5:16 says to confess your struggles to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed. Not confess your sins specifically confess your struggles.

Find one person, tell the truth and let yourself be prayed for.

5. Serve Someone Outside Your Own Interior World

This one is counterintuitive. When faith is dry, the instinct is to turn inward to focus on getting your own spiritual life back, to consume more content, to try harder to generate the feeling you’ve lost.

Sometimes the most effective move is the exact opposite: turn outward. Find someone who needs something you can give and give it. Serve at the food bank. Visit the person who is isolated. Send the text you’ve been meaning to send. Help someone with something practical. Show up for someone else’s need without waiting for your own spiritual state to improve first.

This is not a trick or a distraction technique. There is genuine theology behind it. James writes that faith without works is dead not because works earn anything, but because the life of faith is inherently outward-facing. When we turn so far inward that our entire spiritual focus is on our own interior state, we lose the part of faith that is activated by contact with other people’s needs.

Something happens when you serve from a dry place. Not always immediately. But consistently the act of love toward another person opens something in you that introspection cannot reach. You stop being the center of your own spiritual narrative for an hour and find that God was present in the serving in a way He wasn’t accessible in the searching.

Jesus said: whoever loses their life will find it. On the small scale, in the dry season, that means: stop searching for your faith inside yourself long enough to give something to someone else. And watch what happens.

A Word About the Long Dry Seasons

Everything above is genuinely helpful for the ordinary cycles of spiritual dryness the flat weeks, the dry months, the seasons of going through the motions. Most people find that consistent application of these practices eventually leads back to a place of greater aliveness.

But some of you are in something longer. Deeper. A dryness that has gone on for years rather than weeks, that hasn’t responded to the usual approaches, that feels less like a season and more like a new permanent reality.

If that is where you are, I want to say two things.

First: you are not alone, and you are not uniquely broken. Some of the holiest people in Christian history spent years sometimes decades in interior dryness while continuing to faithfully serve and love and show up. Mother Teresa’s private letters, published after her death, revealed fifty years of interior darkness alongside her extraordinary external faithfulness. She kept showing up. She kept serving. She kept choosing God in the absence of feeling Him.

Second: if the dryness is accompanied by persistent depression, numbness, inability to feel anything at all, or loss of interest in things that used to bring life please talk to someone. A counselor, a doctor, a trusted pastor. The spiritual and the psychological are connected, and sometimes what presents as spiritual dryness has a physiological component that needs attention alongside the spiritual one. Seeking help is not a failure of faith, it is wisdom.

The Promise That Carries the Dry Season

Philippians 1:6 is the verse I want to leave with you today: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

He who began. The initiative belongs to God He started this. You didn’t generate your own faith from nothing. He began something in you.

Will carry it on. Present tense, active, ongoing. He is not waiting for the dry season to end before He resumes. He is working in the dry season. Through it. Underneath it. In ways you cannot currently feel but that Philippians 1:6 says are real.

To completion. This is not finished. The dry season is not the ending of the story. It is part of the ongoing work of a God who finishes what He starts.

The dryness is not the destination. You are not stuck here permanently. The God who began something in you has not abandoned the project. He is present in the dry place working, sustaining, building something beneath the surface that the dry season itself is making possible.

Keep showing up. Keep being honest. Keep serving. Keep returning.

The rain comes.

Lord, I’m going to be honest faith has felt dry lately. The words on the page aren’t landing. The prayers feel thin. I’m showing up but I’m not feeling much. And I’m tired of pretending otherwise. So here I am, dry place and all, bringing You the real version of where I am today. I trust that You are present even when I can’t feel it.

I trust that You who began something in me haven’t stopped working on it. I am choosing to keep showing up not because it feels like anything right now, but because the relationship is real whether I feel it or not. Meet me in the dry place. And when You’re ready in Your time, not mine let the rain come. Amen.

The morning routine advice you’ve been given probably looks like this: wake up before everyone else, make your coffee quietly, sit in your perfectly arranged reading nook, spend 45 minutes in prayer, 30 minutes in Scripture, 15 minutes journaling, and enter your day centered, peaceful, and spiritually prepared.

And if your life looks anything like most people’s lives, that routine has never once happened. Not because you’re spiritually undisciplined. Because you have kids who wake up at 6 AM, a job that starts early, a body that needs more sleep than the ideal morning routine allows, a house that doesn’t have a reading nook, and a life that doesn’t pause to let you have a Pinterest-worthy quiet time.

So the advice bounces off. And in its wake, it leaves something worse than just an unused routine it leaves guilt. The vague, persistent sense that you’re doing the Christian life wrong because you can’t execute someone else’s version of it.

Here is what I believe: five minutes of genuine connection with God before your feet hit the floor is worth more than forty-five minutes of performed quiet time that you’re too tired to actually mean.

Why the Morning Actually Matters

Before we talk about how to do this, it’s worth spending a moment on why morning specifically.

The morning is the moment before the world has gotten to you. Before the emails, before the news, before the demands of the day have stacked up and claimed your mental bandwidth. It is the one window in the day when you get to choose before anything else chooses for you what you’re going to orient yourself around.

Whoever or whatever gets the first hour of your attention tends to set the emotional and cognitive tone for the rest of the day. The person who spends the first twenty minutes scrolling news and social media enters their day in a fundamentally different interior state than the person who spends five minutes in prayer and Scripture. Not because they prayed magic words but because they chose, first, to orient themselves around what is true and unchanging rather than what is loud and urgent.

David understood this. Psalm 5:3 “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly” is not a command but a description of David’s practice. He had learned, through the experience of his own life, that the morning was the best time to set his compass before the day tried to set it for him.

You don’t have to have an elaborate routine to do the same thing. You just have to have a first thing.

The Real Obstacles (And the Honest Answers)

Let’s name the actual reasons morning time with God doesn’t happen not the spiritual ones, the practical ones and address them honestly.

“I don’t have time.”

This is the most common reason and the one that deserves the most honest response. The question is not whether you have forty-five minutes you probably don’t. The question is whether you have five. Whether you have the time it takes to drink the first cup of coffee before you pick up your phone. Whether you have the commute during which you could pray instead of scrolling.

Time with God does not require large amounts of time. It requires intentional amounts of time however small. Five real, present, intentional minutes with God will do more for your soul than twenty distracted ones.

“I’m too tired in the morning to focus.”

This is real. Especially for parents of young children, people working multiple jobs, anyone whose sleep is compromised by health or circumstance. And the honest answer is: meet God in your tiredness. You don’t have to be sharp. You don’t have to be focused. You can say Lord, I’m exhausted and I have almost nothing this morning be near me anyway and that is a completely sufficient prayer.

Some of the most honest, most real prayers in Scripture came from people who were depleted. God is not more available to you when you’re well-rested. He is available to you now, exactly as you are.

“I’m not a morning person.”

Then don’t do mornings. The principle here is first giving God the first available, intentional moment of your day. If your day genuinely starts at noon, then noon is your morning. If you work night shifts and your day begins in the evening, then evening is your morning. The point is not the clock. The point is the orientation choosing God before the noise of the day claims everything.

“I keep starting and then falling off.”

This is the most human response to any new habit and the answer is to lower the bar until falling off becomes almost impossible, and then build from there. If you’ve been trying and failing to do thirty minutes, try five. If five keeps failing, try one. Literally one minute one intentional, phone-free minute of acknowledging God before your day starts. Build the habit of showing up before you build the habit of showing up for a long time.

Five Realistic Ways to Actually Do This

These are not programs. They are options find the one that fits your actual life and start there.

1. The First Five Minutes

Before you pick up your phone before you check texts, before you look at the news, before anything spend five minutes with God. That’s it. You can pray in your bed. You can whisper it. You can close your eyes for five minutes and say: Lord, this day belongs to You. I need You in it. Be with me. That is a complete morning practice. It is available to every single person reading this regardless of schedule, space, or energy level.

The phone is the enemy of this practice. Put it across the room at night if you have to. The first thing you reach for in the morning shapes the first thing your mind orients around. Choose intentionally.

2. The Commute Prayer

If you drive, your commute is a prayer chapel. No podcast, no music, no talk radio just you and God and the road. Talk to Him the way you’d talk to someone in the passenger seat. About what you’re nervous about today. About the person you’re struggling with. About the thing you need help with. About nothing specific just acknowledging His presence in the ordinary in-between moment of getting from here to there.

Commute prayer is sustainable because it requires no extra time and no extra space. It uses time you already have and turns it into something genuinely formative.

3. Scripture With Coffee

One verse. Not a chapter, not a reading plan one verse, read slowly while the coffee is brewing or while you’re drinking the first cup. Read it once. Read it again. Ask one question: what does this tell me about God, or about how He wants me to live today? Then carry it with you into the day. One verse, held in mind and returned to throughout the day, does more than a chapter speed-read and immediately forgotten.

If you’re not sure where to start, the Psalms are the best morning reading in Scripture. They cover every emotional state, they’re short enough to hold in mind, and they consistently reorient toward God before reorienting toward anything else.

4. The Evening Setup

If mornings are genuinely impossible if you have an infant, a medical condition, a work schedule that makes morning anything unrealistic set yourself up the night before. Read the verse you’ll carry tomorrow. Write down one thing you want to bring to God in the morning. Put your Bible or devotional next to your coffee maker. The morning practice begins the night before when mornings are impossible.

5. Prayer in the In-Between

This is the practice Brother Lawrence made famous and Paul described as praying without ceasing the threading of brief, real, ongoing conversation with God throughout the texture of ordinary moments. Waiting for the coffee to brew: Lord, be with me today. Driving the kids to school: God, protect them. Walking into a hard meeting: Jesus, be in this room. Washing the dishes at the end of the day: Thank You for today. Even the hard parts.

This approach doesn’t require a morning routine at all. It requires a decision to keep the conversation running to treat the whole day as an ongoing dialogue with God rather than a single block of dedicated time.

What to Do When You Miss a Day

You will miss days. This is not a question of if it is when. Life will disrupt the routine. The baby will wake up at 5 AM, the work crisis will hit, the alarm won’t go off, the perfectly planned morning will evaporate before it started.

The most important thing about missing a day is what you tell yourself about it.

The version that kills the habit is: I missed again. I can’t do this. I’ll start over Monday. That story turns a single missed day into an abandoned practice.

The version that sustains the habit is: I missed today. I’m showing up tomorrow. That’s it. No shame spiral, no extended restart process, no waiting for a clean slate. Just: tomorrow I show up again.

God is not keeping track of your attendance record. He is not docking points for the mornings you couldn’t manage it. He is available every morning including the ones after you missed the morning before with the same fullness, the same grace, the same invitation: come to me.

Come. As you are. With whatever time you have. With whatever energy is left. With the tired, rushed, imperfect, showing-up-anyway version of yourself.

That is enough. It has always been enough.

The Story

Jen is a mother of three kids under seven with a part-time job and a husband who travels for work. When she heard about quiet times and morning routines she said: that person does not live my life.

She tried the elaborate version twice and abandoned it both times before the end of the first week. Then a friend suggested something simpler: just the first five minutes. Before the phone. Before the kids heard her moving. Just five minutes.

She said the first week felt insignificant. Almost too small to count. But she kept going. And somewhere around week three she noticed something had shifted not dramatically, not in a way she could point to precisely, but the texture of her mornings was different. She was entering the chaos with something underneath her that hadn’t been there before.

She said: I stopped waiting for time I didn’t have and started using the time I did. Five minutes. Every morning. It’s the smallest thing I do and somehow the most important.

Journal Prompts:

1. What is the real reason your mornings with God haven’t been consistent is it time, energy, habit, or something else?

2. What is the smallest possible version of a morning practice that you could actually sustain starting tomorrow?

3. What does the first thing you reach for in the morning tell you about what you’re orienting your day around?

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I want to start my days with You not the idealized version of that, but the real version. Whatever I actually have. However much time, however much energy, however put-together or falling-apart I am when I wake up.

Meet me in the real morning the rushed one, the tired one, the one where I only have five minutes before everything starts. I am choosing You first today. Not perfectly. Not for as long as I’d like. But first. Be present in that small, sincere offering. And let it be enough. Amen.

It is okay to be angry about your life.

Not okay in the sense that anger is the destination. Not okay in the sense that bitterness is a healthy place to live. But okay in the sense that God is not shocked by it, not offended by it, not waiting to punish you for feeling it. The anger is real. The circumstances that produced it are real. And a God who made you with emotions did not design those emotions to be permanently suppressed in the name of appearing faithful.

Some of you reading this are carrying an anger you have never said out loud. Not the garden-variety frustration of a hard week something deeper and older than that. A slow-burning resentment about the specific life you were handed. The family you were born into. The body you were given. The circumstances you didn’t choose that shaped everything before you were old enough to make choices. The losses that came early. The opportunities that never came at all. The gap between the life other people seem to have and the one you’ve been living.

And somewhere underneath all of it maybe buried under layers of Christian language about trust and sovereignty and God’s plan is a question you’re almost afraid to ask:

Why did I get this life?

The Anger You Were Never Given Permission to Feel

There is a version of Christianity that has no room for this kind of anger. It moves too quickly from pain to purpose, from hardship to lesson, from wound to silver lining. It is so focused on the redemptive arc that it skips the part where you’re allowed to sit in the rubble and say: this is not what I would have chosen.

The problem with that version of faith is not that it’s wrong about God’s redemptive purposes. It’s that it is dishonest about the human experience of getting there. And dishonesty, even well-intentioned dishonesty, does not produce healing. It produces a performance of healing on top of a wound that never got treated.

The Bible does not skip the rubble.

Job sat in ashes and said: “May the day of my birth perish.” He cursed the night he was conceived. He said he wished he had died in the womb so he would never have seen this trouble. He was not being faithless. He was being human fully, honestly, completely human before a God who could handle it.

David wrote in Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?” He wasn’t performing trust. He was expressing genuine desolation, genuine confusion, genuine anger at the distance between what God had promised and what his life currently looked like.

And God did not strike either of them down for it. He received it. He sat in it with them. And He in His own time, in His own way redeemed it.

Your anger about your life is not a sign that your faith is broken. It may be the sign that you’re finally being honest enough to heal.

What the Anger Is Usually Really About

Anger at the life you were given almost always has specific roots. It’s worth digging down to find them not to excuse the anger or dismiss it, but to understand it, because unnamed pain has a way of operating underground in ways that unnamed pain cannot.

Sometimes the anger is about a family of origin. The parents you didn’t choose. The childhood that shaped you in ways you’re still untangling. The absence or the abuse or the instability that was your baseline before you even knew there was another option. You didn’t choose that. And somewhere inside you, you know you didn’t. And it is legitimate to be angry that you started there.

Sometimes it is about a body. The chronic illness that changed everything. The mental health struggle that has been your companion whether you wanted it or not. The limitations that other people don’t have to navigate. The days when your own biology is working against you and there is nothing you can do about it.

Sometimes it is about loss that came too early. A parent who died before you were grown. A marriage that ended before you were ready. A child you lost. A future you had planned that was taken away without your consent.

Sometimes it is about opportunity the doors that weren’t open to you, the resources that weren’t available, the circumstances that limited what was possible before you even got started.

None of these things are your fault. And it is worth sitting with that plainly: you did not choose the soil you were planted in. You did not design your own starting conditions. Some of what you’re carrying is the direct result of circumstances you never had any say over.

That is worth grieving. That is worth being honest about. That is worth bringing in all its raw, unfiltered weight to a God who already knows it.

The Potter and the Clay

Isaiah 64:8 is one of the most comforting and most challenging verses in Scripture and it depends entirely on what you bring to it.

“We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”

On a good day, this verse feels like security. God is shaping me. I am in His hands. He knows what He is making.

On a hard day on a day when you are angry at the life you were given this verse can feel like the problem. If God is the potter, then God is responsible for the shape of the vessel. And if the vessel has been through things that broke it, if the shape of it has been formed by suffering and loss and circumstances nobody would have chosen then the potter has some explaining to do.

And here is the thing: that tension is not something to be resolved too quickly. The Bible itself doesn’t resolve it too quickly.

In Jeremiah 18, God tells Jeremiah to go to a potter’s house and watch him work. Jeremiah watches the potter working with clay and the clay is marred. It doesn’t come out right. And the potter without discarding it, without starting with new material reshapes it. Works with it. Makes something from the marred thing.

The vessel that comes out the other end is not the same as the one the potter originally intended. It has been through something and has been remade rather than simply formed. And it is still in the potter’s hands.

That is the God of Isaiah 64:8. Not a God who handed you a perfect life and is watching to see if you’ll be grateful for it. A God who is working with the marred, broken, not-what-anyone-would-have-chosen material of your actual life and making something from it that only the reshaping could have produced.

What to Do With the Anger

The worst thing you can do with anger at the life you were given is suppress it. Push it down, perform gratitude over it, quote Bible verses at it without letting it breathe first. That approach doesn’t resolve the anger. It just relocates it into bitterness, into cynicism, into a low-grade resentment that poisons everything it touches.

The second worst thing you can do is let it become your permanent address. There are people who have made their wounds their identity who have organized their entire lives around what was done to them or what they were denied. That is a different kind of prison, and anger is the warden.

The right thing the healing thing is to bring it to God honestly and then let Him work with it.

What does that look like practically?

It looks like praying the anger. Not the cleaned-up version the actual version. God, I am angry about the family I was born into. I am angry about the body I live in. I am angry that other people seem to have things that were never available to me. I am angry and I don’t fully understand why You allowed this and I am bringing that to You because I don’t know what else to do with it.

That prayer is not faithless. That prayer is the beginning of something.

It looks like lamenting before you reframe. Before you rush to the lesson or the purpose or the silver lining sit in the lament. Name the loss. Acknowledge the injustice of it if there is injustice in it. Give the grief the time it needs before you start extracting meaning from it.

It looks like looking for the reshaping rather than demanding the explanation. God rarely explains why. But He consistently demonstrates that He is working with the material that He is present in the marred clay, that He has not discarded you, that the thing He is making from your specific, difficult, not-what-you-would-have-chosen life is something real.

It looks like finding the people who started in hard soil and grew anyway. Not to minimize your own pain by comparison but to establish that it is possible. That the life you were given, however hard, is not the final word on who you become.

The Story

Marcus grew up in a home that left marks. Poverty, instability, a father who wasn’t there and a mother who was present but depleted he started with less than most people around him and spent years quietly furious about it.

He came to faith in his twenties but carried the anger into it. He prayed, served, did the things but underneath was this persistent, low-burning resentment. Why this family? Why this start? Why did other people get something different?

He finally said it out loud to a mentor at 34. The whole thing. Unfiltered. Expecting to be told to be grateful, to trust God’s plan, to count his blessings.

Instead his mentor said: “That sounds right to me. That life was hard. You didn’t deserve to start there. And I think God has been waiting for you to be that honest with Him about it.”

Marcus said that was the day something cracked open. Not because the circumstances changed. Because he finally stopped performing peace he didn’t have and found that the God he brought his real anger to was larger and more steady than the one he’d been carefully protecting from the truth.

He said: “I thought being angry at my life meant I didn’t trust God. Turns out, hiding the anger from Him was the thing keeping us at a distance.”

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I’m going to be honest with You today in a way I haven’t been. I am angry about parts of the life I was given the things I didn’t choose, the circumstances I didn’t deserve, the losses that came before I was ready for them.

I have been covering that anger with the right words for too long. So here it is. All of it. I trust that You are big enough to hold it that You are not offended by my honesty, that You are not waiting to punish me for feeling what I feel.

Receive this. Sit with me in it. And when You’re ready when I’m ready begin the reshaping. I am still clay in Your hands. Even the angry, marred, not-what-anyone-would-have-chosen version of me. Make something from this. Amen.
