The Texas Hedge: When Your Hedge Is Just the Same Fucking Bet Twice

There are certain phrases on Wall Street that make relatively simple shit sound complicated.

“Factor exposure.”

“Risk-adjusted returns.”

“Portfolio construction.”

“Negative correlation.”

And my personal favorite:

Hedging.

Because sometimes Wall Street takes something that isn’t really a hedge, puts a nice suit on it, gives it a fancy name, and suddenly everyone acts like we’re doing fucking calculus.

So let’s talk about Leopold Aschenbrenner and the Texas hedge.

Because this is a perfect example of something I’ve learned both trading stocks and working in the trades:

Just because something looks right doesn’t mean the fucking thing is plumb.

And if you build enough shit on top of something that’s crooked, eventually gravity is going to explain the problem to you.

First, What the Fuck Is a Hedge?

A hedge is insurance.

That’s really it.

If I own $100,000 worth of stocks and I’m worried the market could shit itself, I can buy puts.

Market crashes?

My stocks lose money.

My puts make money.

I’m still probably losing money overall, but the hedge absorbs some of the damage.

That’s the entire fucking point.

A hedge isn’t supposed to make both sides of your trade win.

Actually, if your main position is ripping, your hedge should probably piss you off a little bit.

That’s insurance.

I pay for homeowners insurance every month.

I’ve never once sat in my kitchen thinking:

“Goddammit. Another month and the fucking house didn’t burn down.”

That’s not how insurance works.

You willingly lose a little money protecting yourself from losing a shitload of money.

Then There’s the Texas Hedge

A Texas hedge is different.

It’s basically when you say you’re hedging…

but you’ve actually found a creative way to make the same fucking bet twice.

And that’s where Leopold’s AI trade gets interesting.

The basic idea behind the portfolio was fucking brilliant on paper.

AI is going to change the world.

So:

Go long the companies benefiting from AI.

Then:

Short the companies AI is supposedly going to destroy.

Look at that thing from 30 feet away and it looks hedged.

Long over here.

Short over there.

Very sophisticated.

Probably needs a Patagonia vest.

Except there’s one small problem.

Both trades need basically the same fucking thing to happen.

AI needs to win.

The long side says:

AI is going to explode, so these companies are going higher.

The short side says:

AI is going to explode, so these other companies are fucked.

That’s not necessarily two independent bets.

That’s one thesis wearing two different hats.

And Then the Market Does What the Market Does

Now imagine the AI narrative cools off.

Suddenly your AI winners start selling off.

Fine.

You’re hedged, right?

Not necessarily.

Because the companies you shorted because AI was supposedly going to murder them suddenly start rallying.

Now you’ve got:

Your longs going down.

And:

Your shorts going up.

Congratulations.

You managed to get fucked from both directions.

That’s the Texas hedge.

And I’ve been through a divorce, so believe me when I tell you:

Being fucked from both directions is not diversification.

Long and Short Doesn’t Automatically Mean Hedged

This is the part retail traders need to understand.

People see:

LONG + SHORT

and their brain immediately says:

HEDGE.

No.

Direction isn’t the only thing that matters.

You need to know what underlying condition makes each trade work.

Let’s simplify Leopold’s trade.

LONG:

Companies building the infrastructure for the AI revolution.

SHORT:

Companies expected to get their asses kicked by the AI revolution.

What makes the long work?

AI adoption.

What makes the short work?

AI adoption.

See the fucking problem?

They’re different securities.

They’re opposite directions.

But they’re potentially attached to the same underlying thesis.

And when that thesis gets repriced, the correlation you thought was protecting you can disappear faster than a subcontractor who already got his check.

Now Let’s Add Leverage, Because Apparently We Weren’t Having Enough Fun

This is where shit gets dangerous.

Leverage is incredible when you’re right.

It makes you look like a genius.

You’re making money faster.

Returns are exploding.

Everyone wants to know what you know.

Then the trade moves against you.

And leverage suddenly remembers its other job:

Trying to fucking kill you.

Let’s say you’ve got $100 million.

But through leverage you’re controlling $300 million of exposure.

Your positions move against you 10%.

That’s $30 million.

Except you don’t have $300 million.

You’ve got $100 million.

So that 10% move in the underlying exposure just took roughly:

30% of your actual capital.

That’s the part people miss.

And now your broker isn’t interested in your 10-year AI thesis.

He doesn’t give a shit about your research.

He doesn’t want to hear about AGI.

He wants his fucking money.

Today.

That’s the difference between being wrong and being forced to be wrong.

You can eventually be completely correct about AI and still blow your portfolio up before the future arrives.

This Shit Happens to Retail Traders Constantly

And before anybody points at Leopold and laughs, understand something:

Retail traders do this shit every fucking day.

Let’s say I buy:

NVDA

AMD

AVGO

MU

CRWV

Five positions.

Then I tell myself:

“Look at me. I’m diversified.”

No you’re fucking not.

You’ve got five different girlfriends who all live in the same apartment.

When the building catches fire, you’re not diversified.

You’re just losing five relationships simultaneously.

Those five charts might look different.

Different boxes.

Different entries.

Different ATRs.

Different strikes.

But if they’re all being driven by the same AI/semiconductor liquidity cycle, you might really have:

ONE TRADE × FIVE POSITIONS.

And that’s something I teach constantly with the Box Strategy.

The chart gives me the location.

The box gives me the structure.

Compression gives me information.

Liquidity gives me the potential path.

But none of that eliminates portfolio risk.

I can find five beautiful boxes and still build one giant shitty trade if they’re all dependent on the same thing.

Think Like a Plumber for a Second

If I walk into a mechanical room and see five pipes, I don’t automatically assume I’ve got five independent systems.

I need to know where the fuck they go.

Maybe all five feed back into the same main.

Trading is the same way.

Ticker symbols don’t tell you your actual diversification.

You have to follow the pipe.

What’s driving NVDA?

What’s driving AVGO?

What’s driving CRWV?

What’s driving the company you’re short?

Eventually you might trace all those pipes back to the same fucking main:

AI capital expenditures.

Now you’ve found your real exposure.

That’s factor risk.

Wall Street has a fancy name for it.

I prefer:

Where does the fucking pipe go?

Here’s My Favorite Test for a Hedge

Ask yourself one question:

What happens to this position when I’m completely fucking wrong?

That’s it.

Forget the spreadsheets for a minute.

Forget what happened over the last 200 trading days.

Forget that the historical correlation was -0.42.

Tell me the story.

I’m long AI infrastructure because AI spending is going through the roof.

Fine.

Now AI spending expectations collapse.

What happens to my long?

It probably gets smoked.

Now what happens to my hedge?

If the answer is:

“Well, those stocks might actually rally because I shorted them based on AI destroying their businesses…”

We’ve got a problem.

Your insurance policy just caught fire with your fucking house.

A Real Hedge Should Almost Feel Stupid When Things Are Going Well

That’s another easy way to understand it.

When your portfolio is ripping, a legitimate hedge often feels like wasted money.

Good.

That’s what it’s supposed to feel like.

Protective puts expire worthless?

Fine.

Your stocks went up.

Insurance cost you money?

Fine.

The disaster didn’t happen.

But if your “hedge” is also absolutely printing when your main thesis works, you need to ask yourself whether you’ve actually reduced risk.

Because there’s a decent chance you didn’t buy insurance.

You bought more exposure.

The Biggest Lesson Isn’t Whether Leopold Is Right

This is the part I find most interesting.

Leopold could be completely fucking right about AI.

Maybe AI transforms the economy exactly the way he believes.

Maybe five or ten years from now people look back at his research and say:

Holy shit, this guy saw everything coming.

That doesn’t automatically mean the portfolio construction was right.

These are two different questions:

Is my thesis correct?

And:

Can my portfolio survive being temporarily wrong?

I’ve learned enough lessons the hard way in my life to understand the difference.

You can know exactly where you want to go and still drive the fucking car into a ditch getting there.

Markets don’t give you points for eventually being right.

You have to survive long enough to collect.

That’s why leverage matters.

That’s why correlation matters.

That’s why concentration matters.

And that’s why understanding what actually constitutes a hedge matters.

Because the Texas hedge teaches one of the simplest and most important lessons in trading:

A hedge isn’t defined by what it does when you’re right.

It’s defined by what it does when you’re wrong.

If your long loses money…

and your “hedge” also loses money…

you didn’t hedge shit.

You just found a more sophisticated way to double down.

And Wall Street has been inventing expensive terminology for that since long before any of us showed up.

PART THREE - BURN THE BRIDGE

What Happens When You Stop Selling?

Eventually, I made a decision: I didn't want to sell OVTLYR anymore.

That didn't mean I suddenly hated everything about the software. It didn't mean I couldn't use it. It didn't

mean I couldn't participate in the community.

I figured I could simply become what everyone else using the product was: a customer.

Apparently, that wasn't going to be so simple.

I've since learned that behind the scenes Chris was trying to figure out a way to get me out of the Discord.

That's the piece that made me look backward at the entire relationship.

Look at the Timeline

When I was finding themes, I was useful. When I was teaching social arbitrage, I was useful. When I was

appearing on content, I was useful. When I was promoting OVTLYR, I was useful.

When I could introduce a potentially major client, I was useful. When that relationship almost collapsed

and someone needed to preserve it, I was useful. Four months later, when OVTLYR wanted another

opportunity with that group, I was useful.

When somebody needed to bring them back to the table, I was useful. When somebody needed to close

the deal, I was useful.

Then I decided I didn't want to sell OVTLYR anymore.

And apparently there were conversations happening behind the scenes about getting me out of the

community. Maybe OVTLYR has another explanation. They're welcome to give it.

The Problem With Punching Up

This is where the story comes full circle. Chris likes punching up. He likes dissecting influencers. He likes

examining what gurus say versus what they do. He likes exposing contradictions.

Fine. Then let's use the same standard.

If you teach people that a trading strategy requires approximately 350 trades before changing the plan,

explain why your own plan changed after approximately 25.

If the new plan subsequently went to approximately -36%, explain what the data showed.

If you stop publicly entering alongside the community because the community supposedly affects your

fills, explain how entering before them and releasing trades later protects those followers from becoming

potential liquidity behind your position.If somebody teaches a concept on your platform and similar ideas later become incorporated into your

ecosystem, give people credit where credit is due.

If you offer someone compensation to bring a major relationship back to the table, don't wait until twenty

minutes after they close the deal to tell them the economics have changed.

And if somebody decides they don't want to sell your product anymore, maybe ask yourself why before

trying to figure out how to remove them from the room.

Independence

There's another reason I'm willing to tell this story now. My entire philosophy around trading has changed.

I don't want people dependent on me. I don't want twenty people blindly taking my trades. I don't want

someone's profitability dependent on whether I show up tomorrow morning.

I want to teach people how to find their own stocks, build their own thesis, understand technical structure,

test their own ideas and eventually stop needing the person who taught them.

Because if your product requires permanent dependence on the person selling

it, you have to ask a difficult question: Are you teaching independence, or

manufacturing customers?

That's the lesson I took from all of this. Relationships end. Business relationships definitely end. That

doesn't automatically make either side evil.

But when you build your public identity around accountability, you don't get to decide accountability only

applies to everybody else.

I spent a long time trying not to burn this bridge. Eventually, I realized I didn't need it.

Sometimes you burn a bridge to show a motherfucker you can swim.

PART TWO - THE RED CARPET

What Happened When Real Money Entered the Picture

At some point, I brought OVTLYR something significantly more valuable than content: a potentially major

client relationship.

Chris told me what he wanted to offer them. He was going to “roll out the red carpet.” Concierge service.

One-on-one training. A higher level of attention.

I helped bring everyone together. Then came the Zoom call.

On the day of that meeting, without telling me beforehand, Chris told the group he wasn't going to provide

what had been discussed. I was sitting in the middle of a relationship I had brought to the table.

That could have been the end of it. Instead, I spent approximately four months preserving that

relationship.

Come Back to the Table

Four months later, OVTLYR wanted another shot. This time the potential economics were significant.

Under the compensation structure presented to me, my potential compensation could reach approximately

$120,000 per month if the required conditions were actually met.

But OVTLYR needed something first. They needed that group back at the table. And I had to close it.

So I did the work. I preserved the relationship. I brought everyone back together. And I closed the deal.

Then approximately 20 minutes later, my phone went off.

Chris messaged me. I was told that half of what I understood had been agreed to for my compensation

would instead be given to my counterpart at the other company.

Twenty minutes. After the deal was closed.

That's when something changed for me. I wasn't willing to quietly eat it.

I Went Public

I went to my Substack and talked publicly about what happened. Then I was asked to retract it.

And here's why I'm comfortable telling this story: I kept the communications.

Messages. Emails. The chronology. People don't have to take my word for everything. Where

documentation exists, I can show documentation.

That experience fundamentally changed how I viewed my relationship with OVTLYR. Because when

you're bringing ideas, attention and business to the table, it's easy for someone to call you a partner.You learn considerably more about that relationship when the money arrives. And even more when you

stop producing revenue for them. Which brings me to Part Three.

PART ONE — PUNCHING UP

What Happens When the Microscope Turns Around?

Chris built a large part of his identity around punching up.

Finding the fake gurus.
Dissecting their advice.
Pointing out the contradictions.
Calling out people who say one thing publicly and do another privately.

And I respected that.

But there is a problem with building your platform around holding other people accountable:

Eventually, the same microscope has to turn around.

One of the principles Chris taught repeatedly was simple:

You don’t change a trading plan until you have roughly 350 trades of data.

That makes sense.

Twenty trades can lie to you. Fifty trades can lie to you. A strategy can go through winning and losing streaks that tell you almost nothing about whether the underlying system actually works.

You need sample size.

Yet from what I watched happen, the original trading plan was sitting around a 40% performance level, and after roughly 25 trades, the plan changed.

Not 350.

Approximately 25.

And from the point where that new plan was implemented, the performance eventually fell to approximately -36%.

That doesn’t automatically mean the strategy is bad.

It does mean the obvious question deserves to be asked:

Why didn’t the 350-trade rule apply here?

Because if you’re going to dissect other people’s systems, statistics and inconsistencies publicly, then your own methodology should survive the same examination.

But there was another change that bothered me even more.

As the group grew, Chris stopped consistently releasing trades when he entered them.

The explanation was that too many people were following the trades and he couldn’t get filled properly.

So the solution became:

Establish the position first. Release the trade later.

Think about the market mechanics of that.

If one trader establishes a position before a large group knows about it, and then that group receives the trade afterward, their buying can create additional demand behind the original position.

And eventually someone has to sell.

I’m not alleging illegal front-running. I’m talking about structure and incentives.

At what point does the group following behind stop being the trading community…

and potentially become the liquidity for the person already positioned ahead of them?

That is exactly the type of question Chris would ask if he were analyzing someone else’s trading community.

So I think it’s fair to ask it here.

And this is where my own experience with OVTLYR becomes relevant.

I came in wanting to teach people something different.

Social arbitrage.

How to find trends before everyone else sees them. How to hunt for stocks instead of waiting for someone to hand you a ticker. How to combine what people are actually talking about with technical structure and eventually make your own decisions.

I taught that concept.

Later, OVTLYR developed a Finviz-based process/tool that pairs extremely well with the exact type of social-arbitrage research I had been teaching.

And that’s where this story starts becoming bigger than trading performance.

Because Part Two isn’t really about whether a strategy won or lost.

It’s about what happens when the person helping build the house realizes he may no longer be welcome inside it.

Microsoft 470

Before I ever started charting Microsoft, I was looking across the market for leaders that seemed to be lagging. Not companies with broken businesses—just market leaders that weren’t participating for reasons that appeared temporary.

Microsoft stood out.

It’s one of the strongest companies in the market, consistently generates enormous cash flow, and continues to be a long-term leader. Yet it was lagging, largely because of news.

That’s when I started charting it.

One thing about my approach is that earnings are rarely the starting point. Markets have shown us over and over that a great company can report disappointing earnings and rally, while another can post excellent earnings and sell off. Because of that, I don’t build a trade around the earnings headline. I build it around price.

As I mapped Microsoft’s structure, what stood out wasn’t the news—it was the amount of open space on the chart.

My strategy is based on a simple observation: price has a tendency to revisit prior areas of consolidation. Once price leaves a box and enters an area with little historical resistance, it often travels through that low-resistance zone until it encounters the next significant area of structure.

That was exactly what I saw.

Rather than focusing on whether earnings would beat or miss expectations, I focused on where price had room to move if buyers regained control. Prior consolidations create a roadmap. Empty space between those consolidations is where momentum can develop.

Whether Microsoft ultimately reaches 470 isn’t the point of this post. The point is understanding why that target existed before the move.

For me, the chart always comes first. The news explains the move after the fact. Price usually tells the story before everyone else is talking about it.

This isn’t a prediction.

It’s a question I’ve been thinking about.

For years, trend-following has been one of the most effective ways to trade. EMAs have helped traders stay on the right side of strong institutional trends, and in the right environment, they’ve done exactly what they were designed to do.

But what if the environment begins to change?

Ray Dalio has discussed the amount of new supply entering the financial system—from government debt issuance to companies raising capital. At the same time, corporate buybacks, one of the largest sources of demand for equities, can slow during certain market environments.

None of these factors, by themselves, mean the market is headed lower.

But together, they raise an interesting question:

Could the next market reward precision more than participation?

An EMA doesn’t create a trend.

It follows one.

If markets continue producing strong, sustained trends, then trend-following will continue to work. But if liquidity becomes more fragmented, capital becomes more selective, or investors begin demanding stronger catalysts before committing capital, then clean trends may become less common.

That doesn’t mean EMAs stop working.

It may simply mean traders have to become more selective about which trends they choose to follow.

That’s where my own research has been heading.

Instead of asking, “Is the EMA pointing up?” I’ve become more interested in asking:

• Is there a meaningful catalyst?

• Has price built enough energy through consolidation?

• Is there clear space for price to move?

• Is this a trend worth following—or just another crossover?

The goal isn’t to replace trend-following.

The goal is to improve the odds before the trend even begins.

If the market is entering a period where liquidity is more competitive and capital is more selective, then our analysis may need to become more selective as well.

Maybe nothing changes.

Or maybe the next cycle doesn’t reward traders who find the most trends…

Maybe it rewards those who identify the right ones.

Something worth thinking about.

The unvarnished reality of fund management is that performance anxiety drives asset allocation. For the first half of the year, if a manager didn't heavily overweight a tiny handful of mega-caps, they systematically underperformed their benchmarks. It was a brutal, highly concentrated environment.

Now that those crowded tech themes are cooling off, active managers find themselves trapped in a secondary dilemma. They must lock in tech profits to protect their year-to-date gains, but they cannot simply sit in cash and fall behind if the broader market holds steady. They require highly volatile, liquid vehicles to chase alpha rapidly. Liquidity Gaps + Gamma: Why Some Breakouts Become Explosive

One of the biggest misconceptions in the market is that gamma alone causes explosive moves.

I think the real story is the correlation between liquidity gaps and gamma.

Picture a stock that’s been trapped inside a tight consolidation box for days. Buyers and sellers are constantly exchanging shares until one side finally overwhelms the other.

When price breaks above that box, it can enter what I call a liquidity gap—an area where there is very little overhead supply and relatively few resting sell orders. With less liquidity available to absorb buying, price can travel much faster than it did inside the range.

That speed matters.

Now imagine there are thousands of out-of-the-money call options sitting just above the breakout. Each individual contract may only have a gamma of 0.005. By itself, that’s not much.

But large positions change the equation.

Whether it’s one trader holding 1,000 contracts or thousands of traders holding similar strikes, the aggregate gamma exposure becomes meaningful. As price races through the liquidity gap toward those strikes, the delta of those options increases rapidly.

As delta rises, market makers who sold those calls may need to buy shares to remain hedged. Those purchases create additional buying pressure.

Here’s where the relationship becomes interesting.

The liquidity gap allows price to accelerate.

That acceleration causes out-of-the-money calls to gain delta faster.

As delta changes, hedging demand can increase.

That additional buying pressure can push price even farther through the liquidity gap, creating a feedback loop where market structure and options positioning reinforce one another.

This is why I don’t just study charts, and I don’t just study options.

I study how liquidity gaps and gamma interact.

Because when both line up, a simple breakout can become something far more powerful than either factor would suggest on its own.

Understanding where price has room to move is only half the equation.

Understanding how options positioning can amplify that move may be where the real edge begins.

Knowledge has always been more valuable than noise.

I refuse to become another copy trader chasing someone else’s conviction.

Social arbitrage taught me that markets reward original observation, not recycled opinions.

Some people wait for permission. Others learn to see what everyone else misses.

Mentors like Peter Lynch and Chris Camillo didn’t teach me what to buy—they reinforced the importance of how to think.

Your greatest edge will never come from following the crowd.

All the best opportunities begin as ideas that most people ignore.

So I built my own framework because I wanted conviction instead of dependence.

Stay curious… and to everyone who thinks independent thinking is a waste of time—well, you already know what the first letters spell.

There are two kinds of people in this market.

The first kind thinks because they have a political opinion, the market must give a shit too.

They see one headline and immediately convince themselves every candle is proof they were right.

Red? “I told you.”

Green? “See? I was right.”

Everything has to fit the story already living in their head.

The market doesn’t care.

It doesn’t know your party.

It doesn’t know your ideology.

It doesn’t know your feelings.

And it sure as hell doesn’t wake up every morning asking what you think.

Then there’s the second kind.

The intelligent man or woman.

The one who quietly shuts the hell up and starts collecting data.

They ask questions instead of demanding answers.

They test ideas instead of defending beliefs.

They’d rather be wrong and profitable than right and broke.

That’s a mindset.

One is driven by ego.

The other is driven by probability.

People ask me why I spend countless hours digging through SEC filings, researching mergers and acquisitions, studying options positioning, and building my own scanners.

Because I’m not interested in becoming another copy-and-paste trader.

I’m interested in building an edge.

Everyone wants the holy grail.

Almost nobody wants to do the work required to find one.

Jim Simons didn’t build one of the greatest quantitative funds in history because he had the hottest political take on social media.

He built systems.

He measured relationships.

He searched relentlessly for repeatable signals.

News existed.

It just wasn’t the foundation.

The opportunity often exists long before the headline.

That’s what Social Arbitrage has become for me.

Not another indicator.

Not another guru.
