About five years ago, when I still lived in Paris as a recent graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts, closet moths spawned seemingly out of the blue one day in my quaint studio apartment on the left bank. What initially began as a small nuisance morphed into a four-year-long battle with the most disgusting, shameful and hidden parts of myself made visible—when you understand the spiritual connection between your home and your self, you begin to understand the symbolic meanings of different seemingly unrelated household issues mirroring your own energetic state. At that time, I lived in a constant state of stress, grief, and anxiety mixed with depression: the uncertainty of a draining one-sided long-distance situationship, the fear of how I’d make money and renew my visa after finishing art school, the habit of weighing myself every day while consuming kinder cards with diet soda for dinner, and constantly chasing after those disgusting greige flying menaces that destroyed my nicest, most expensive clothes. Looking back on those memories through the lens of spiritual awareness, I fully understand now how those moths were the Universe’s way of forcing me to deal with my low self-worth, feminine trauma, and the disappointments of my past I had buried deep into my subconscious and refused to acknowledge, thereby recreating the same prolonged pain.

To understand the emotional undercurrents of a household crisis, we must analyze the metaphorical issue at hand. Taking my example of closet moths, these creatures feed of natural fibers like wool, cashmere, cotton and silk, or anything other organic matter containing keratin (the protein also found in hair, skin and nails). Symbolically, hair/skin/nails are a proxy for intimacy, self-worth, and one’s relationship with themselves and others; a happy and healthy inner state (especially robust feminine energy and solid self-worth) often manifests as strong, beautiful hair/skin/nails. When you take into account the fact that these pests feed off dead skin and hair, especially when they accumulate in unclean or hard-to-reach places, the symbolic meaning of “thriving on stagnation and limitations of the past” becomes clear. Closet moths also prefer dark, undisturbed, unmoving spaces like under-cleaned closets or wardrobe corners, reinforcing the symbolism of subconscious distortions and their correlation with trauma, negative energy, and self-worth issues we refuse to acknowledge and face head-on.

My closet moths crisis finally resolved when I stopped pretending everything was fine and faced my inner shame.

Closet moths appeared during a time of my life when everything seemed to go wrong all at once (as water leaks, bug infestations, and other household problems tend to do)—I was constantly waiting for a guy to text me back, waiting for artistic opportunities, waiting for my stressful French naturalization application, waiting for love and luck to come save me. During this strange and difficult period of my life, I stepped on dog poo multiple times within the span of months and tripped down the stairs constantly, which had never happened before throughout years of living in Paris. Seemingly unfortunate events happened one after another:

• a stalker began harassing me on social media (contacting my former school for my personal information)

• a scammer got some free meals out of me by pretending to be a rich art collector

• I lived with a compulsive skin picking addiction (dermatillomania), collecting pieces of skin from my heels in a small glass candy jar

• the pipes of my ninety-three year old upstairs neighbor burst and flooded my wall

• every single art contest I applied for rejected me

• a married man tried to hit on me (who turned out to be a family friend of one of my close friends!)

• my French naturalization was denied (an appeal on the decision was also denied)

The cherry on top was when, during one of my routine morning walks to the Jardin du Luxembourg, I was stopped by a strange metallic smell lingering in the air, only to look down and see a massive pool of blood (still wet) splattered in front of my white shoes. Even pre-spiritual awakening, I knew that was a warning sign: You smell things before they happen. The status quo no longer suffices. If you continue this way, bad things will happen.

Things finally got better for me when I faced my own emotions and belief systems head-on, many of which were quite rotten. At the time, I lived largely in denial of the shame, resentment, and hatred I harbored for the perceived failings of my parents and people from my past; I began to realize how the avoidance of these emotions actually caused those negative energies to seep out and recreate past dynamics in the present moment. For example: my conscious self rarely thought of mom and dad, and generally avoided doing so. When making acquaintances, I’d verbally express a good relationship with my family. Deep in my heart and subconscious, however, I harbored so much hatred and blame—the kind I’d refuse to acknowledge. Thoughts along the lines of; “I had sex with people I didn’t love, and who didn’t love me, because I am an extension of my parents and I can get revenge upon them by harming myself; I ate foods that shortened my life and damaged my body because I resent being alive”. When I finally got the courage to take inventory of my subconscious beliefs, I began to expunge the negative ones and persistently replace them with new, initially foreign, ideas like: “I am deserving of a beautiful life”, “Everything happens in my favor even if I don’t immediately understand why or how”, and “I release the need for my parents to be different than how they are for me to be happy and well”. I binge-watched Dylan James videos on youtube and listened to his nightly affirmation tapes; every morning I did a five-minute Wim Hof breath work practice. Although this did not immediately remove the closet moths, they helped cleanse and purify my once-tragically dirty aura.

After a life-changing, divinely aligned moved from Paris to London in the winter of 2023, I noticed the closet moths seemed to have disappeared from my life. I then experienced a spiritual awakening, where I intuitively began picking up trash, communicating with trees and buildings, greeting the Sun every morning, shifting the weather, even zapping card readers and mysteriously turning lights on and off. Everything seemed fine and dandy (for a while it really was), until months later during the summer when I noticed a dreaded greige flying menace emerge from a bag of sewing fabrics. I was floored—after so much inner work, why were they back once again? Apparently, evolution happens on a spiral of ascension, with familiar patterns from the past meeting us on different levels of ourselves until we are free of them for good. I took the physical steps of buying moth spray (as natural and non-toxic as possible), protecting my garments with bags, and even tried telling the moths not to reproduce (newsflash: just because you can communicate a message, doesn’t mean said message will be obeyed). One night, I finally decided to try good ole prayer: “Dear God, please show me what I need to do to finally get rid of these moths. I declare my intention before you, I am ready to be rid of them once and for all” (Paraphrased). Within twenty-four hours, I was inspired to reorganize my winter clothes for the coming autumn—there, within the folds of some white merino pants, I discovered with sheer horror CLOSET MOTH CENTRAL—a whole lineage of moths had made their home in these pants and a merino sweater. As disgusting as it was, I hermetically sealed those garments housing closet moth megalopolis and immediately disposed of them, followed by an intensive deep=clean of the whole apartment. Then, and only then, did they truly disappear for good; I haven’t been bothered by them since.

When you examine the process of shadow work and subconscious reprogramming, this mental-spiritual practice mirrors almost exactly the process of cleaning your home from pests and problems. Initially, we sometimes live in denial or begrudging tolerance of the negative beliefs, suppressed emotions, uncomfortable flaws of our physical and mental habitations—until the moment they become intolerable. The disgust, tediousness, and exertion of physically having to clean and repair a space mirrors the effort and devotion required to face our deep subconscious fears and limitations head-on; the emotion of shame is also deeply connected to the energy of “dirtiness” and “being broken”, reflected in one’s living spaces as pest infestations or structures in disrepair. Having the courage and dedication to do the uncomfortable work to better your condition is actually a major declaration of self-love and self-respect: the very same energy whose absence led to the ensuing chaos, and the only energy which can heal it.

The Emotional Undercurrents of Water Leakages, Plumbing Issues, Rats, Mold…

To understand the emotional undercurrents of a household problem, analyze the symbolic meaning behind your situation at hand. In the case of closet moths, they feed mainly on clothes and hair/skin/nail protein, representing subconscious limitations damaging your self-image and identity (skin = self, closet = secrets/subconscious, clothes = self-concept, identity, image). When you piece together the symbols, the message is clear: closet moths are a physical manifestation of negative repressed emotions/beliefs damaging your self-worth, image and identity. I was only able to free myself from closet moths when I freed my mind and spirit from the damaging, devouring negative belief systems and suppressed emotions of shame from my past. You can take the same formula, or system of symbolic analysis, and apply it to other household problems:

• Rat infestations: rats (though some find them cute!) historically have been bearers of disease through fleas and their association with trash as scavengers living adjacent to humans. Eating trash = thriving off negative energy and emotions; dirtiness = feelings of shame, scurrying/hidden/nocturnal behavior = living in denial and emotional suppression. Where in your life do you perpetuate and harbor low self-worth, shame, and denial of your true self and desires?

• Dampness, Mildew and Mold: the element of water, when in a free-flowing lively state, is the essence of life force itself. However, “dead” water (like humidity trapped in an enclosed space) is the representation of energetic stagnation and waste which leads to darkness festering (represented by brown, gray, and black mold). Where in your life do your emotions stagnate, and how/why do you ignore your feelings? How have you enabled the conditions in your life which make you feel stagnant or trapped?

• Plumbing issues and Leaking Pipes: different parts of your home are actually connected to different aspects of your life, and even your physical body. The element of water being a proxy for life force (like blood or money), leaking pipes and plumbing issues ask you to reconsolidate your energy and priorities in life (including thoughts, behaviors, actions) to ensure they’re managed properly for your highest good.

• Structural Damage: sometimes when cracks appear in the wall plaster or beams begin to degrade, look at where you’re bearing too much stress in your life (a symbol for burden and heaviness). If you lived in a large shared building or are referring to a public space, such structures can accumulate collective stress and emotional turmoil as well.

Spiritual Side Note: sometimes household issues can also be ways of clearing personal, familial, and collective karma not entirely “your fault” per se, but their solutions are the same as if they were your own karma: integrate the unhealed, unacknowledged, uncared-for part of you that issue represents.

The Winning Formula for a Beautiful Internal and External Home: Grace, Patience, Accountability and Action.

Do you believe that our greatest challenges in life are portals/shortcuts to our highest self and dream life? I know this to be true. The ultimate answer for clearing the emotional, energetic root causes of household woes lie in the omnipotent balm of unconditional love: all life thrives off recognition, acknowledgement, honor, grace, respect, care, and love. EVERY HUMAN BEING IS A LIMITLESS CHANNEL FOR THIS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE—when you show up with this energy for yourself, your mind, your body, and your home (which is an extension of you), it is inevitable that life gets better and entropy leaves where it once thrived.

Over a year ago, I began feeling an urge to visit Savannah, Georgia, charmingly known as “the Hostess City” of America’s South. At the time, I still lived in London and had little idea of why I was so drawn to this place. A spiritual mentor then told me that this was a “soul retrieval” location for me (without any further explanation), so I took the initiative to do a past life regression meditation and excavate the connection. Soon, visions of working in a nineteenth-century antebellum house flashed in my awareness, with images of my face and hands looking completely different: dark skin, a rounded forehead, a small fine nose, and the name “Willa”. In this vision, I am about fourteen, fifteen years old. The main sensations I felt in those scenes were fear, avoidance, and doing my best to avert the attentions of the man and lady of the house. One memory in particular stood out: in a fit of jealous rage, the white head maid or planter’s wife threw a pot of boiling water on me. It was a moment that shattered my belief in human beings so deeply that the resulting fear and mistrust carried on well past that single life—compounded by the loss of a son taken away by force, life in the system of slavery, bereft of any personal agency whatsoever, seemed only a burden of suffering. I remember the girl in this vision drifting beneath an alley of scraggly oak trees with a plantation house in the distance, deciding to take her own life as a way to “steal back” a life that was already stolen. An image of her wandering through the misty trees represented the lingering energies of my/our soul trapped in that land, where too much darkness had taken place.

Soul retrieval is a process in which a person consciously retrieves the fragments of their soul’s energy trapped in different locations and time periods. During incarnations of extreme emotional intensity, both good and bad, portions of a soul’s energy can remain stuck in that time and location (like a coordinate across space-time reality) until a future version of themself frees up that energy, intentionally or not. When properly executed, soul retrieval can accelerate healing, resolve karmic patterns, and activate different skills native to former lifetimes—due to the dense nature of our physical reality, most of the soul retrieval humans experience occur in response to trauma of all kinds. These fragments of trapped energy can also express as supernatural phenomena (such as “ghosts” or visions of the past replaying in certain locations), which is why I decided to combine the topic of soul retrieval with spiritual clearing on this trip.

Savannah’s First Impressions: Southern Gothic Charm Anchored in the Past

When you take into consideration Savannah’s dense history of slavery, bloody war battles, yellow fever outbreaks, and its decadent-macabre atmosphere as portrayed in John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, you begin to understand this city as one giant, beautiful cemetery. As soon as I stepped out of the taxi, I noticed how heavy and humid the summer air felt—as if I were sharing it with thousands of other souls, even though the streets were empty. My airbnb took of the entire top floor of a gorgeous Victorian gingerbread-style house on east Gordon Street, a short walk from the various house museums I intended to visit as a curious young interior designer. On the short walk to Mercer House (the former home of antiques dealer and collector Jim Williams), I noticed gorgeous flickering gas lanterns along most of the townhouses, framed by intricate black ironwork gates and the sound of trickling fountains. The omnipresent silver-green Spanish moss draped throughout local magnolias, crepe myrtles and live oaks hung like a canopy of human hair, while distant church bells rang on the hour—Savannah’s atmospheric historic district reminded me so much of Paris. If not Paris, then a small French town rich with the centuries of history absent in most modern American cities. Despite Savannah’s beauty, I felt a lingering sadness from all my past lifetimes there.

Past Life Regressions: How to do it, and Why + My Story

My first past-life regression related to the city of Savannah took place months earlier in the spring, during a spiritual retreat in Sedona, Arizona. My charming casita near the event venue had several books related to my interests (a prime example of the law of resonance in effect), including a novel with artwork of bees on the cover titled Let Us Descend. One evening, I performed a self-guided meditation in front of the fireplace (technically guided by my spirit team and higher self), which revealed many traumatic memories linked to lifetimes of enslavement, heartbreak, isolation and powerlessness as different women living in the South. The aforementioned book seemed uncannily placed for me to delve into my soul’s past, and I followed the protagonist’s story of being a young slave girl communing with spirits, her ancestors, and the land. I read the entire book in one day, as if I were quickly recouping memories from that lifetime—I then meditated on the parts of my energy trapped in that faraway land near Savannah, in the form of what some may call “ghosts”. I saw a young black woman drifting in grief under the fog of sinuous oak trees, searching for her long-lost son: Willa and William. “Willa and Willy”. I reassured her they could be reunited now, that the suffering which bound her to this earthly realm could be released if only she chose to move on. I pictured her reunited with her little boy, walking hand in hand through a doorway of pearlescent light, and felt their departure. Afterwards, I felt as though more of myself had dropped into me.

Here’s some of my best advice for anyone looking to practice past-life regression on their own or with a practitioner:

• Set an intention for what type of insight you wish to receive, and for what purpose. For example: “Show me why I have so much resistance to wealth/love/trauma with men” etc.

• There are a few reasons why past-life regression may not “work” for someone: they may have completely shut off their spiritual side/imagination, the past events may be too traumatic for them to process, or some other reason. Regular mindfulness practices such as meditation and communicating with your spirit guides/higher self can help “train” you for entering hypnotic states such as a regression.

• For a general outline of a self-guided meditation, I recommend first entering a relaxed state through breathing and visualizing a hall of mirrors or doors. Ask for the right doors or mirrors to reveal your past lives to you. Note key events and sensations, emotions, lessons from each lifetime. If an event is difficult to witness, detach and watch the events from a third-person perspective (like a movie or play), with the intention to integrate all the lessons without being re-traumatized.

• Any spiritual practice can be improved by cleansing the space beforehand and setting energetic protections (such as calling upon your spirit guides, burning palo santo and other sacred plants, ringing bells, high-vibrational prayer, and setting wards by visualizing a dome or pyramid of light fully enclosing your space.

On my first morning in Savannah, while I was still in bed, I started uncontrollably crying. My heart felt such deep pain, not only from the past versions of myself I had began to release, but also the compounded grief of all the souls around me across centuries. I thought of Jim Williams, with his passions for preserving beautiful history and the art of old, dying of a heart attack in the entry hall of Mercer House just after being acquitted of murder for shooting his assistant Danny Hansford in alleged self-defense. I felt the heartbreak of those who had succumbed to fever, slavery, battles, loss of home, loss of loved ones, loss of self—such intense grief grasped at my lungs and heart across time, like a pair of invisible hands grasping into my chest. I spoke to both Savannah’s ghosts of the past and fragments of my own soul trapped in my past: the pieces of me at boarding school, in the basement of my dorm, in a quiet Parisian square, inside lonely apartments.

‘The sufferings of your past no longer bind you, should you choose so. May your soul continue on its journey, free of limitation and made whole once again. I love you.”

These are the words I used to help as many spirits cross over as I could, with their permission and will, while internally rescuing parts of myself stuck in the past. I performed this meditation/ritual on a bench in Madison Square, the site of one of the Revolutionary War’s bloodiest battles. In my spiritual sight, I saw a large riverboat stop at a landing while innumerable glowing orbs emerged from the land and drifted into its compartments through a narrow wooden bridge. I asked for Mother, Father God to turn the red lantern at the ship’s bow green when all those who wanted to leave had embarked. I began gesturing various sweeping motions with my hands, as if continuing the motion of energy in my vision, while some confused onlookers walked by (I did not dress or look like someone hallucinating on drugs, so they probably assumed I was a weird SCAD student and carried on). Once the process was complete, I carried on with my day’s excursion and walked to Forsyth Park.

Escaping the Trap of Victim and Abuser: Powerlessness Perpetuates Suffering.

Abuser and Victims are the same: victims abuse themselves, and abusers victimize themselves.

This was one of the first videos I shared on another morning of my Savannah trip, fresh from my sleeping subconscious. Through multiple past life regressions, I realized I had experienced being both the abuser and victim, the enslaved and enslaver countless times. For every memory of personal violation from the past, I faced another memory of exploiting another’s vulnerability—in both instances I felt powerless. Whether that powerless feeling came from physical circumstances or lack of satisfaction in controlling others, these visions from the past taught me that human life is a long, drawn-lesson in remembering who we truly are, and reclaiming our personal power. Not the artificial, meaningless power of controlling others which perpetuates suffering, but the deep and true inner power of knowing who you are and remaining pure in spirit and action throughout every imaginable external event. I saw how the dynamics of victimhood and controlling/aggressive behavior played out in my life, in my childhood, in my ancestors, and in my past lives—one long knotted rope of lessons I was untying piece by piece. Near the end of my trip, I felt a deep inner peace and understanding for all the different parts of myself, and a resolution with the past. The heaviness of Savannah’s atmosphere, her history and ghosts, no longer deterred me as I saw in them all the aspects of myself that needed, and deserved, love.

Tell-Tale Signs your Soul Retrieval is Working

You are always guided in your day-to-day life, whether you know it or not. Messages of warning and encouragement appear to you constantly, through songs on the radio, messages on strangers’ t-shirts, or on glimpses of license plates and more. This is especially prevalent on spiritual initiation journeys, such as a physical soul retrieval trip. This can appear as delayed flights, drivers making a wrong turn or unusual traffic, which energetically “tests” your readiness for the initiation, almost like a payment. Old things will leave your life to make room for better, more aligned, more beautiful objects and experiences. I knew for a fact it was the Universe sending me a sign, that I was ready for better to enter my life, while remaining in gratitude for how the objects of my past had served me. Next, I was inspired by my gorgeous airbnb to get new silk pillowcases, which were on sale with the option to monogram my full name in each corner—if you're ever questioning the payoff of soul retrieval and integration, I can absolutely confirm that it will help you become more of yourself.

On the morning train from Savannah to Charleston, I sat next to a young mother with her beautiful baby; she recognized me from a few days ago when I had worn a remarkable red dress and matching headband out and about in the historic district. We exchanged friendly conversation and I wished her well, complimenting her adorable daughter. Then, I performed my secret ritual of praying over every baby and pregnant mother I encounter in public—each time I send my intention that they will be divinely guided, protected, and supported for a fulfilling life. Each time I do this, I feel like I save a version of myself from the past who needed that love and attention as a child, as a baby. The words I speak for souls just entering life are oddly similar to those I share for the ones departed through death:

May you be divinely held, guided, protected, and supported on your path. May your heart experience endless renewal in the face of suffering and continue to light the way. May your incorruptible soul find abundant joy in what life has to offer. May you live a meaningful, fulfilling life. I will you my love.

About two years ago while living in London, I began to “see” energy (emotions, thoughts, information) between people and their environments.
