Prophetic Life: Living by an Alternative Script

Dr. Chris Green, in his book Sanctifying Interpretation, quotes Walter Brueggemann’s theses on seeing life as a script. He calls it a counter-script — suggesting that we see ourselves as scripted by the manifold processes of culture formation, imprinted on us through the liturgies of ideological propaganda. Life is scripted. When you’re born, they tell you what you’re supposed to do, how you’re supposed to be, what life is supposed to look like. Commercials and propaganda tell you this is what life looks like — if you want a good life, follow this script. Romans 12:1 is the script: we want to be unscripted. Verse 2: “Be not conformed to this script of the world” — where corrupted systems try to script our lives, and gods behind the scenes push propaganda that says, “This is how we are meant to live.” When we are in the domain of darkness, we don’t understand that we’re living by a script someone else wrote. But when the story of Jesus comes into our lives, we are awakened: on the road to Emmaus, the disciples didn’t just encounter a stranger, but Jesus, coming as an alternative script for how the eschatological prophet would come. The prophetic introduces an entirely different script. A transcendent script. A new future breaking into the present, causing the world as we knew it — built upon the old script — to end, because another script has broken in.

That script is the story of the Exodus, but not the story of a lamb that brought us out of natural Egypt. The Lamb who takes away the sin of the world has introduced an alternative script, now written upon our hearts. We are not meant to live as slaves — there’s another script that says we are sons and daughters. A groan rises in you that says there’s something better than being caught under this script. This script becomes unveiled, and when it’s written on your heart, we become unscripted and de-scripted, because an alternative script has been introduced. Prophetic ministry says: “I know you’re living by a script that the world has given you, but I have another script.”

The Imprint of His Person: Character, Hypostasis, and the Recapitulation of All Things

Character and Hypostasis

According to the writer of Hebrews, the Father essentially speaks the language of the Son, who is the brightness of God’s glory and the expressed image of His person. What God spoke through the prophets in times past, in portions, He has now spoken through His Son in these last days (Hebrews 1:1–4).

When the text says “the expressed image of His person,” the phrase rendered “exact imprint” or “expressed image” is where we find the Greek word character. And the word translated “nature” is hypostasis, sometimes transliterated hupostasis. Hypostasis means nature, but more precisely it denotes what has real substance, what possesses existence. It is the stuff, the very substance, of who God is — that which makes God, God. The Father has it, the Son has it, and the Spirit has it. This Greek word character is the source of our English word “character,” and the exact imprint it describes is like a stamp pressed upon something.

This phrase is actually drawn from wisdom literature, which begins to describe wisdom as God. That is why, as I have said before, Philo — an early philosopher and theologian — spoke in allegory, describing wisdom as being with God in the beginning. He said that Moses wanted to give wisdom another name, and he called it “in the beginning.”

The writer of Hebrews declares that Jesus is the wisdom from the beginning. So Jesus is wisdom — the wisdom of the cross. His glory and nature are imprinted upon the new creation, and it is through that imprinting of His nature upon creation that He is purifying it of its sins. That is the work of the priesthood.

The Beginning and the Recapitulation

Yet He is more than wisdom from the beginning; He IS the Beginning. He is the beginning, the head and archetype of creation, and through His incarnation, death, burial, and resurrection He has entered into the brokenness of humanity as both high priest and sacrifice, cleansing that brokenness as sacred space. Through His death, the tomb has now become the womb of new creation. As the Lamb King, He leads an exodus out from the dominion of death and into Himself, the head and beginning of the new creation.

Irenaeus refers to this as recapitulation. For Irenaeus, Paul’s language about Christ as head and firstborn expresses precisely this reality. He drew the concept directly from Ephesians 1:10, where Paul describes God bringing “all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.” That verse became the biblical foundation for his entire understanding of how the incarnation accomplishes salvation.

The connection runs deeper than terminology. For Irenaeus, Christ functions as humanity’s true head because He is both the Creator and the archetype after which humans were originally fashioned. All humanity exists “in Him” who is “the firstborn over all creation” — language that combines both headship and incorporation, a head united to its body. When Paul calls Christ the head of the church and the firstborn of creation, he is describing the same reality Irenaeus articulates through recapitulation: all humanity is bound up in the Messiah after whose image humanity was fashioned. This makes Christ the root and ruler of the entire human race, whose corporate person contains our lives within His life, allowing Jesus to recapitulate the human story on our behalf.

For Irenaeus, the incarnate Son had to become truly the head of every human being, and the only way to recapitulate all humanity was to share the life of all humanity. This transforms Paul’s language of headship from mere authority into ontological reality: Christ does not govern humanity from outside but from within, as the renewed source of human existence itself.

Tetelestai: The Finished Stamp of the Father’s Image

If the imprint of His nature is a stamp pressed upon creation, then the cross is where that stamp is set. When Jesus cries out, “Τετέλεσται” — Tetelestai, “It is finished” (John 19:30) — He is not merely announcing the end of His suffering; He is declaring the completion of new creation. The word is the perfect passive of teleō, rooted in telos — end, goal, consummation. The perfect tense matters: this is not “it was finished,” receding into history, but “it has been finished, and it stands finished,” a completed work whose effect stands permanently in the present.

So the cry from the cross reaches both the substance and the goal of things — what humanity now is, and what humanity is now for. Preachers have long tied tetelestai to the practice of stamping “paid in full” across a settled account, and the image still preaches, though scholars rightly note that the surviving documentary receipts most often use a related term, tetelōnētai, rather than tetelestai itself (Talbot School of Theology). The deeper point survives the correction: teleō marks an obligation brought to its intended completion. What was owed, broken, and unresolved has been definitively closed, and a new condition now stands in its place.

The biblical passages emphasizing Christ’s headship and firstborn status reinforce this recapitulative framework. Colossians identifies Christ as “the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” and “the head of the body, the church,” describing Him as “the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent” (Colossians 1:13–20). First Corinthians 15 presents Christ as “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep,” establishing the parallel that “as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” Paul goes on to say that it was through His blood that He reconciled all things in heaven and on earth, making peace through the cross; therefore, He has reconciled all these things in His body through His death (Colossians 1:20–22).

This is the priestly work into which we have been invited: to participate in seeing all things summed up, or recapitulated, in Christ.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

Tetelestai and recapitulation are not two doctrines but one movement: what Christ finished on the cross is what He now sums up in Himself. The stamp of His hypostasis pressed into humanity, the debt closed out, death undone by death, the tomb turned into the womb — all of it is the head gathering His body into His own life, so that the telos of creation is no longer a distant goal but a Person. He is the Beginning who has become the End, and because His work stands finished, our life stands within it. To bear His character now is to carry the finished work forward as priests, until all things in heaven and on earth are visibly what they already are in Him.

Paul’s anguish in Galatians 4:19 and Romans 8 must be understood as more than personal grief over struggling believers. It is apostolic travail within the drama of new creation. The apostle carries a burden for a people who have been brought into Christ, yet must now be formed into the visible image of the One in whom they have been made new. His pain is not the pain of failure. It is the travail of birth.

Paul writes, “My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you” (Gal. 4:19). He is not merely trying to correct their doctrine or secure their behavior. He is travailing until the life, character, authority, and likeness of Christ become manifest within the people of God.

The apostolic burden is to see what is already true in Christ become visible in His Ekklesia.

Those who are in Christ are a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). The old has passed away; behold, all things have become new. Therefore, the church is not simply a religious community trying to survive in a broken world. The Ekklesia is the firstfruits of the world to come. She is the beginning sign of God’s renewed order breaking into this present evil age. In her life together, her holiness, her unity, her worship, and her witness, the powers of the age to come are being made visible now.

This is why Paul’s travail in Galatians 4 must be heard alongside Romans 8. In Romans, creation itself groans and travails as it awaits liberation from the bondage of decay into the freedom of the glory of the children of God (Rom. 8:19–23). The church has received the firstfruits of the Spirit, but she still groans as she waits for the full redemption of the body. The new creation has truly broken in, yet it has not reached its final unveiling. We possess the down payment of the age to come while longing for its consummation at the appearing of the Lord.

Paul’s apostolic anguish therefore participates in this larger groaning. He labors for Christ to be formed in the saints because the maturity of the sons and daughters of God is bound up with the hope of creation itself. The church is being prepared to reveal in the present what will one day be unveiled throughout all creation: the reign of Christ, the restoration of humanity in God’s image, and the defeat of death itself.

The apostle does not add to the finished work of the cross. Christ alone has secured redemption through His death and resurrection. Yet Paul is brought into fellowship with Christ’s sufferings as he bears, in his own body and ministry, the cost of bringing Christ’s victory into contested places and broken people (Col. 1:24). The cross has already triumphed over principalities and powers. The resurrection has already inaugurated the new world. But the apostolic ministry enters the places where that victory is resisted, denied, obscured, or distorted.

This is why apostolic ministry carries both proclamation and travail. The apostle breaks into regions where Christ has not yet been named and lays no foundation other than Jesus Christ crucified and risen (Rom. 15:20; 1 Cor. 3:11). He announces that a new world has broken into the present evil age. He declares the victory of the cross, the power of the resurrection, and the lordship of Jesus over every power that seeks to keep humanity in bondage.

Yet the warfare does not end with the first proclamation. Apostolic labor continues until Christ is formed in the people. It continues until the church becomes mature, holy, discerning, and secure in the truth. It continues until the bride is prepared as a pure virgin for Christ (2 Cor. 11:2). The apostolic burden is not merely to gather converts, but to present a people who bear the image of the Son and manifest the life of the coming kingdom.

For this reason, the apostolic ministry must contend with false apostles, false teachers, distorted gospels, and every counterfeit light that seeks to seduce the church away from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. The enemy does not merely oppose evangelism. He opposes formation and discipleship. He seeks to prevent the people of God from becoming what they already are in Christ. Some of the strongest warfare I experience when I travel to different regions and nations is when the emphasis is on formation and discipleship.

The anguish of the apostolic, then, is the anguish of a spiritual father and mother who sees the church caught between promise and fullness. It is the groaning of one who knows that the tomb has become a womb. Out of death, God is bringing forth a new humanity. Out of the cross, He is forming a people who will bear the glory of His Son. Out of the travail of the present age, He is preparing a bride, a house, a priesthood, and a cruciform witness for the age to come.

Patristic Resonance

John Chrysostom saw Galatians 4:19 in precisely this apostolic light. He said that Paul “resembles a mother trembling for her children,” and he connected Paul’s travail directly to the forming of Christ within them (Chrysostom, Homily 4 on Galatians). This strengthens the point that apostolic anguish is not sentimental concern. It is labor for a mature Christ-shaped people.

Chrysostom also read Romans 8 as a vision of creation’s expectancy for the glory that is coming. He described creation as being “in the midst of its pangs,” waiting for the coming good things, and emphasized that Paul’s language of groaning and travail points beyond present corruption toward the greatness of what God will reveal (Chrysostom, Homily 14 on Romans).

The apostolic groan, therefore, belongs inside the larger groan of creation moving toward liberation.

Irenaeus offers an especially powerful witness for the language of recapitulation. He refused to speak of God abandoning creation. Rather, he taught that the present fallen order passes away while creation itself is renewed, declaring that “there shall be the new heaven and the new earth, in which the new man shall remain.” He then explicitly joins this hope to Romans 8, affirming that creation will be freed from corruption into the liberty of God’s children (Irenaeus, Against Heresies V.36).

In this sense, the forming of Christ in the church is not detached from creation’s future. It is the firstfruits of the recapitulation of all things in Christ.

The apostolic travail is therefore a new-creation travail. It labors for the church to become what Jesus is already, true as finished work, of what it means to be human as the firstborn from the dead, and what all creation will one day fully become at His appearing.

I’ve been sitting with you in my heart as I write this — as someone the Lord has knit into my life and calling in some way. You’ve walked with me, prayed for me, as God has moved in many different spaces. So before anything else, I just want to say: thank you. You are family, and this letter comes to you as one.

I don’t write often to ask for anything. I write today because I believe the Lord is inviting us into something deeper together — not a transaction, but a true partnership in the Gospel, the kind Paul spoke of when he thanked the Philippians for their fellowship “from the first day until now.” That’s what I sense the Spirit stirring between us.

Here’s the vision the Lord keeps putting in front of me: raising up and discipling this generation — into the fullness of who God has called them to be. Through initiatives like The Key of David, The Discipleship Institute, CSI, I have been pouring out university and seminary-level training in a crossed-shaped Christ-centered study of various topics from, strategic intercession, apostolic leadership, church history, early church theology, eschatology, and — equipping the saints not with shallow inspiration, but with real depth, real substance, real formation.

And here’s what matters most to me: the bulk of this has been, and will continue to be, free. Free trainings. Free teaching. Free resources for the hungry ones who can’t afford seminary but carry a seminary-sized hunger for the things of God. I’ve also been raising up leaders alongside a dear friend as co-chancellors of Kingdom Champions College, carrying this same fire into a fuller academic expression of Kingdom training.

REVELATION, THE LAST DAYS & THE LAMB

In a time of war with global implications, the Body of Christ must become far more responsible in how we frame our eschatology and our intercession. I’m hearing influential voices speak about the end times as if they know exactly how it will all unfold—often with great confidence but little cruciform humility. When our teleology (our vision of God’s ultimate goal in Christ) does not frame our eschatology, we end up seeing the future through a fractured lens.

The Book of Revelation is meant to purge our imagination, bringing about an exodus from the unholy weave of empire, religion, and culture so intertwined that we can no longer distinguish the kingdoms of this world, the spirit of the age, and the kingdom of our God.

At the burning center of this exodus stands the throne and the Lamb—Revelation’s dominant images—one throne with God and the Lamb together, revealing that true sovereignty is cruciform, ruled by the slain‑yet‑standing Lamb. We need to hear the voice that says, “Come up” and see from a heavenly vantage point. Read as an exodus, Revelation doesn’t just offer interpretation; it brings deliverance, inviting us into the very climax of that exodus as the Lamb‑King rules and opens the scroll.

This 4‑week course is an invitation to step out of fear‑driven, event‑chasing eschatology and into a Jesus‑centered, cross‑shaped, Spirit‑led vision of the last days.

“Now from the sixth hour, darkness was over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” Matthew 27:45-47: This verse doesn’t imply that Jesus is somehow separated from the Father. Instead, it indicates the power of Jesus’s intercession on the Cross. God cannot be separated from God. Matthew quotes Jesus' words from Psalm 22.

The Psalms are prayers that were sung; therefore, Jesus would not have quoted just part of a psalm; He would have sung this prayer. Psalm 22 became especially resonant during and after the Babylonian exile, when the nation itself experienced abandonment and suffering. Medieval Jewish interpreters explicitly connected this psalm to exile. Rashi, one of the most influential Jewish interpreters in history, interprets the psalm as referring to all of Israel and connects it to the Babylonian exile.

Through His incarnation, Jesus took on the identity and vocation of Israel, who would have lamented with this prayer while in exile from the Holy Land. At the same time, Jesus took on the identity and vocation of the first Adam, exiled from the Tree of Life in the Garden. It would have been at the time when darkness was over the land that Jesus entered our exile to bring us back into union with the Triune God through the intercession of the Cross.

Through the intercession of the Cross, we were reconciled and brought into union with that same Body. It is by His death that death was conquered, and by His life, we embrace the fellowship of His sufferings so that, as His death continues to work in and through us, resurrection life can flow to others. This is how we embody the intercession of the Cross. It is the Holy One coming into the common and bringing the common into oneness with the Holy One.

Picking up the Cross daily is not just a death to self but a display of the power of Jesus’ death, that His death gives death a deathblow, and by that power we put to death everything in us that does not give Him glory. We destroy the power of darkness through denying ourselves, picking up our cross, and dying daily. We display the spoiling and disarming of principalities and powers through the Cross as we are unmade and remade in the image of the One who is truly human…the firstborn and firstfruits of the resurrection.

The Black Church in America was born in the crucible of slavery, when enslaved Africans gathered in secret “hush harbors” and “invisible churches” to worship a liberating God away from the control of white slaveholders. Out of those stealth meetings emerged independent Black congregations and denominations in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which became spiritual, social, and political centers for Black communities.

At the heart of this tradition is the Exodus story, which Black Christians have read as a living narrative of God’s liberation of an oppressed people and a template for their own journey from bondage toward freedom. Point of emphasis—I am referring to liberation through cruciform theology of freedom in Christ.

One New Humanity in Christ

It is through the power of the cross, the middle wall of partition that divides us has been removed. Jesus has brought peace within himself, making all of us one. There is no Jew, Greek or Gentile; we are all sons and daughters of God, with Jesus as Lord and God as our Father. So when I talk about the Black church, I’m not talking about a place of separation. I’m talking about the result of our history. In Christ there is only one church! What I experienced didn't lead me to further separation…it led to my liberation.

Growing Up in the Black Church

I have such great memories growing up in the Black church. It was a place I got to see my family all the time. It was a place where friends became family. It was like a world where those who looked like me were shaped in Christian values amid a culture where I was dealing with a lot of racism and being marginalized.

I remember the long Sundays starting with Sunday school, morning service, afternoon service, and evening service lol. But I remember in between the services where we got to have meals together all the time. And I fondly remember one of the oldest members in the church growing up. Mr. Gandy would be the first in line to eat the church’s fried chicken, collard greens, mac & cheese, and pies.

I know there are restaurants called Church’s Chicken, but it was those meals at church after the morning service where the original Church’s Chicken found its origin. Can't forget about the kool-aid!! It was so good that even when I became older and went back home to Pennsylvania, I would call the mother of the church who made the chicken and ask her to make me some before I came back to Texas lol.

The Identity-Forming Narrative of the Exodus

Everything was not perfect just like any other church however, I have such fond memories of things I received and learned growing up in the Black church. The identity-forming narrative of the Exodus story, ultimately seen through the power of the Lamb that took a mixed multitude in Egypt oppressed to be slaves, and through the Exodus makes them sons; a kingdom of priests, one nation, really shaped and formed my identity growing up in the Black church.

One of the things I learned so much in the Black church growing up, and even in my first days of being called to ministry, was the identity-forming narrative of the power of the cross seen through the narrative of the Exodus story. That narrative so identified the Black church with the liberation of Israel, and it deeply shaped how I see the gospel through the lens of the wounds of Christ.

I remember early in my formation for ministry, before I realized God was calling me to preach, I would go to Virginia with my pastor to the Black ministers’ convention and sit with thousands of Black preachers deeply shaped in theology. Those moments shaped me in deep ways that affect the lens through which I see now.

Beauty Received, Not Just Brokenness Seen

In times when we can say what the church is not or look at things that are wrong, the challenge with that is we often miss the beauty of the things we received.

It was the place where someone like my father, a Vietnam vet who grew up in the South, came back from a war into segregation and couldn’t even walk in the front door of the bathroom, marched during those times of the civil rights movement, moved to the North, met my mom, and got radically saved in a bar because God told him through a vision that “your son is going to need a godly father.”

My father hated white people because of how he grew up. He comes into the Black church and it doesn’t strengthen his hate…It actually heals him of it, where eventually he ends up pastoring a predominantly white church later on in life.

Even though the place that I grew up in was a completely different world from what I experienced in the church on Sundays,

the Black church actually began to shape and strengthen who I was in Christ. It taught me how to live the life of a Christian, who was black, in a world that sees me as less than—not strengthening my anger, but actually building resolve, seeing myself and others through the lens of the blood of Jesus.

It is this history of the identity, forming narrative of the Cross that I learned in the black Church. It did not strengthen segregation—It brought me a revelation of the unity with diversity. So now I stand in the present with the wonderful privilege of overseeing a beautiful diverse community, black and white, Hispanic, republican, and democrat—a family.

I won't say more than this, but all I can tell you is when I preached in Birmingham Alabama last year I understood even more how sinister and committed Satan is to keeping us divided. Don't take the bait!

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3 that when the veil is removed in Christ—that veil which obscures

The Scripture that testifies of him —and we begin to see Christ as He was meant to be seen, we cannot remain the same.

"We are transfigured from one degree of glory to another, transformed into the image of the crucified and risen Lord".

II Corinthians 3:18

To be His body, we must learn to embody the beauty of who Jesus is.

We cannot embody the One we do not know.

Our goal should not merely be to produce something. Our goal first should be to be with Someone".

Pierced: An Awakening to the Beauty of His Wounds

I once believed I needed a kind of awakening like Isaiah's — a vision of the Lord high and lifted up, in which the glory of God would reveal the poverty of my own heart.

I longed for something that would shake me, expose me, and leave me unable to speak except through a trembling tongue touched by fire.

One day, during worship, I was caught up in a vision — not only of Isaiah 6, but something

deeper. What Isaiah described, John later interpreted: a Lamb, as if slain, standing in the midst of the throne (Revelation 5:6). The throne room imagery of Isaiah was present, but what stunned me was not just the vision — it was the form of the One enthroned. It was what Isaiah saw, but the Lamb King— slain, scarred, yet standing and ruling.

I felt the weight of that vision press into me. It was not just glory I saw. It was piercing. I didn’t feel undone in the poetic sense — I was violently pricked, pierced through the heart.

The word Isaiah uses for “undone” in Hebrew (damah) took on new life when I studied the Greek: katanusso—a rare word found only once in the New Testament (Acts 2:37) —where Peter's audience, upon hearing the gospel, were "pierced to the heart."

That root word — nusso — is used of the soldier who pierced Jesus' side.

Suddenly, I understood: the revelation of the Crucified Christ is not merely historical or theological. This is not about a word study, but a story and narrative we are invited into.

It’s deeply personal, but not private. It's not just something to be believed — it's something to be felt. Encountered. Entered. In that throne room, the Cross was the throne. The Lamb was reigning — not in spite of His

wounds but because of them. And I was standing in His presence, undone, ruined, pierced, and re-formed by His hands with wounds. His form is cruciform.

I heard a voice ask:

“Who will go for Us?”

And Then the commission:

“Tell them their eyes and ears are still closed to the revelation of My wounds. You have not yet seen Me without them.”

We’ve often tried to see a victorious Jesus apart from the marks of crucifixion. But John says

that when He returns, “every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him.” (Revelation 1:7) His wounds are not erased in glory — they are enthroned.

Sometimes simply walking—going on prayer walks—can really help us connect with God. Walking outside allows us to hear the sounds of creation and, in a semiotic way, to meditate on what it means to walk with God in communion, community, and communication.

This devotional flows from a testimony and experience that has been shared in different settings, but not often written down as a devotional. Considering the level of hopelessness in the world, and what some may be experiencing personally, I believe this reflection is timely.

Part of the day’s reading in my personal devotional was in Genesis 17, and it connects directly to the story of Abram and the God who meets us in hopeless situations.

Life in the Midst of Death

I recently had a dream that has become, for me, a deeper formation into understanding how God brings life out of death. In the dream, I was standing in a church sanctuary filled with people who were doing their best to wear a mask of encouragement, yet beneath their smiles they were weighed down by a deep and pervasive hopelessness.

As I preached, two realities stood before me. On one side was the story of God bringing a nation out of the deadness of Abraham’s body and the barrenness of Sarah’s womb; on the other side was the tomb where Jesus had been laid, the very place from which He rose again.

In that moment I realized that in seasons of crushing hopelessness, God reveals Himself as the One who calls life out of the dead and who transforms the tomb—what looks like a final ending—into the womb of new creation. This brings an eternal perspective in temporal times and transcendent viewpoint that pierces through darkness by seeing the world through cross-shaped lenses.

Pregnant with Hope in Hopeless Times

As I continued to preach in the dream, both of these scenes remained at the front of the sanctuary, framing everything I saw. I could perceive not only the congregation’s visible struggles but also a deeply personal hopelessness working in my own life. Yet inside, there was another world—an inner reality where it felt as though I was pregnant with hope in the very midst of despair.

The more hopelessness became evident around me, the more fiercely I proclaimed hope, until there was a tangible breakthrough and God birthed fresh expectation in the middle of impossible situations.

It was as if the same God who drew life out of Abraham’s deadness was once again producing the seed of Christ—the hope of all creation, the hope of the world—within a people who felt utterly spent.

Marked in the Battle of Despair

In another scene within the dream, a family member appeared, dressed like a high-ranking military officer, standing tall in a general’s uniform. I sensed he was doing everything he could to maintain a strong, disciplined stance amid the atmosphere of hopelessness. At the end of the message, he came forward and embraced me, as if he had finally received permission to lay down his armor of pretense and confess how hopeless he truly felt.

His name, in the dream, was Mark, and I knew it was a play on words: God was “marking” people, granting them grace not to deny their hopelessness, but to see it clearly so that He could move in and through them by embracing the God of Hope.

In that marking, the Lord was opening space for an eternal perspective—rooted in the resurrection and ascension of Jesus—to invade earthly despair and empower us to stand as light in a world growing increasingly dark.

Setting the Stage: From Tomb to Womb

This dream serves as a doorway into the mystery of life from the dead. It invites us to look honestly at the hopeless places in our lives and in our world, not to be crushed by them, but to discern the hidden work of God who calls forth life where there is none.

The God who spoke a nation out of Abraham’s barrenness and raised Jesus from a sealed tomb is even now turning tombs into wombs, endings into beginnings, and despair into the birthplace of indestructible hope.

In what follows, we will explore how this eternal reality—anchored in the risen and ascended Christ—forms a people who carry resurrection life into the very heart of a dying world.

Abram: From Hopelessness to Promise

This devotional comes from the story of Abram and his wife Sarai. In their old age they did not have a child, yet God came to them and promised that they would be the progenitors of an entire nation that would bless the earth.

Abram’s name means “high father,” and God would change his name to Abraham, “father of nations.”

When the Lord first came to him in Genesis 12 and called him to leave his father’s house in Ur of the Chaldeans (early Babylon), He told him he would be a father of nations. At that time Abram was about seventy-five years old. His body was past child-begetting, and his wife was in her late sixties; they did not have the natural ability to produce children.

In Genesis 15, the word of the Lord comes to Abram again: “I am your shield; your exceedingly great reward.” Abram responds that he has no child and that the only heir he has is his servant, Eliezer. Then the Lord brings him outside the tent and says, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them… so shall your offspring be.”

Genesis simply says that Abram believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness. But Romans 4 opens the inner story. Paul explains that Abram, “against hope, in hope believed.”

He looked at the deadness of his own body, which was past child-begetting, and at the deadness of Sarai’s womb, which was past child-bearing. Out of that deadness God called forth life.

Abram looked squarely at the hopelessness of the situation—his age, the deadness of his body, the barrenness of Sarai’s womb—and yet he grew strong in faith. As he increased in faith, God imputed righteousness to him.

It was as if God deposited righteousness into an empty bank account.

In the Hebrew, the imagery carries the sense of being “set in a seat.” Abram rested in what God said about him. He made an exchange: he laid down his limited way of seeing himself and received God’s plans for him.

When Abram stepped out of his tent and looked at the stars, the Lord had brought him outside his limitations. As he surrendered his limited thinking and chose to believe what God said about him, as a sacrifice he offered up his owen self-perception. God imputed righteousness into him. In other words, God brings Abram out of the tent to show him, under the stars, how God thinks about him and his future. As

Abram chooses to trust that vision, God reckons (chāshab) his faith as righteousness—God ‘weaves’ Abram into His redemptive plan, and Abram’s way of thinking is slowly conformed to God’s.”

His name was changed from Abram to Abraham. In Hebrew, a heh (the sound of breath) was added to his name—symbol of life and Spirit. Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah, with the same heh added. That letter is also part of the name Yahweh. God breathed His life into their dead situation. This is why Paul can say that God “calls those things which do not exist as though they did” and why Abraham is called the father of faith.

A Modern “Coming Out of the Tent”

Years later, this same God who met Abraham in hopelessness spoke into a season of deep darkness in our own story. The Lord called our family to move from Pennsylvania to Texas. We moved our entire family across the nation, leaving all extended family behind.

The call came on the heels of devastating events:

• My mother-in-law had just passed away from stage 4 cancer.

• My wife had lost her job.

• We had just experienced a miscarriage.

• The ministry we were part of was imploding through corruption and immorality that were being exposed in the midst of what many were calling “revival”.

Life felt shattered, yet God said, “Move to Texas.” The word we received was that Texas would be one of the areas for awakening in the nation.

We imagined that revival would meet us like a red carpet rolled out at the door—knock, knock: “It’s revival.” We assumed things would flow easily because we were obeying God. Instead, when we arrived, it was hard. Increasingly hard. It became so difficult that my wife would look at me and ask, “Did God really say move?” All I could say was, “I don’t know, but we’re here. We left everything.”

There were times when our finances were so strained that we questioned whether we had made the right decision, and yet the Holy Spirit continually reminded us, “This is the way I have called you to walk.” In some of our darkest and most hopeless moments during those early years in Texas, the Lord kept bringing back the story of Abraham.

I would read those Scriptures, not as someone trying to force myself to agree with them, but as someone being apprehended by the same God who had apprehended Abram.

The Spirit caused me to believe beyond circumstances that looked completely dead and hopeless. Our yes caused God’s plans and destiny to weave into our lives and increase our faith.

I began to experience what Abraham did: every time I looked around and saw situations that were the opposite of what God had promised, I found faith rising.

As I looked at hopelessness, I somehow increased in faith, not by my own effort but by God’s faith gripping my heart.

Little by little the Lord started to bring us out of those dark places and into a beautiful l experience of what He had spoken years before. Provision began to come. Clarity began to come. It moved beyond just faith for finances or ministry growth and into the realm of miracles: deaf ears opening, healings, deliverance increasing more and more. But it all began in a place that looked like hopelessness.

Outside the Tent of Limitation

The prayer for today is that there would be an impartation as you read this—that you would be apprehended the way Abraham was apprehended, and the way we were apprehended in our journey.

May you be brought outside the “tent” of your limitations to see from a higher vantage point. In the midst of increasing darkness, may you see how deeply God is at work.

In Genesis 1, when darkness was over the face of the deep, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. God was present and active in the darkness before there was ever light. In the same way, in your present darkness and hopelessness, God is already at work.

Prayer of Reflection

Lord, bring us out of the tent of my limitations. Where I see only the deadness of my own strength and the barrenness of my circumstances, breathe Your life. Let the faith that apprehended Abraham apprehend us.

Just as Abraham’s dead body and Sarah’s barren womb was a prophetic type that showed the seed of the life of Christ would be as life from death, bring deep revelation to us to that life for us has come from your death.

Your death gave death a deathblow and you call life out of dead things according to your eternal purpose found in You.

In every place of hopelessness, let us grow strong in faith of your resurrection power that empowers us to embrace the fellowship of your suffering by seeing with the eyes of faith beyond our circumstances, giving glory to You, fully convinced that what You have promised You are able also to perform. In Jesus’ name, amen.

There is a kind of prayer that comforts…

Fasting has always been a way of bringing about humility. One way of seeing this is to bring our flesh into submission to the will of the Lord. It must be done with prayer or it is just a diet. The benefit of fasting and prayer is that it brings our flesh into submission so we can commune with God in deeper ways. It brings our soul and flesh into submission to the leading of the Spirit. The flesh can often act as a veil, hindering us from access into deeper and transcendent encounters with Jesus.

Scripture says that when Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness, Satan tempted Him. Satan’s way of tempting Jesus gives us an indication of how he will tempt us, while also showing the power of fasting. Satan came to Jesus when He was hungry.

“…After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry…”

Matthew 4:2

Hunger connects our life to the flesh. This is why Satan’s first temptation was, “Command these stones to become bread” (Matthew 4:3). Jesus responds by, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (v. 4). Every temptation, Jesus responds with, “It is written.”

The Word of God is living and bread to us because it is our life more than natural bread. Satan will always come when our flesh is weak to keep us from the Cross.

The satanic will tempt us to always avoid the sufferings of the Cross; therefore, our response in times of hunger can be a door through suffering into deeper union with Christ.

Through the Veil of the Flesh

The epistle to the Hebrews opens a profound door into the mystery of experience beyond the veil.

Hebrews 10:19–20 declares that a “new and living way” has been opened for us “through the veil, that is, his flesh,” naming the crucified body of Jesus as the true veil that is pierced so we may enter the Holy of Holies with confidence. The early fathers saw in this not a vague metaphor, but the concrete, once-for-all act by which Christ’s death tears down every barrier between humanity and God.

The Torn Veil and Access

For writers like John Chrysostom, Christ’s flesh is the place where heaven and earth meet—“tabernacle and veil and heaven”—and His death is the moment the way into God’s presence is opened forever.

The veil of the temple was a sign; the veil of Christ’s body is the reality, through which Jesus, our High Priest and forerunner, enters into the Holy of Holies so that where He is we will be also.

Through the veil of His flesh, we come into a deeper experiential union with Him where heaven and earth, visible and invisible, are unite in Him.

The way through the veil was the Cross; therefore, when we fast, it is a way of moving beyond the veil of earthly confinements into a deeper realized, transcendent place in Christ.

The veil removes the hooks of our earthly desires so we can step into a greater awareness and access of the inheritance we already have in Christ through the victory of the Cross.

It is when the power of His resurrection empowers us to embrace the fellowship of His suffering, to put to death everything that hinders and distracts deeper union and sensitivity to the things of the Spirit.

Ascetic “Unveiling” of the Heart

The Desert Fathers describe fasting and prayer as a slow removal of the “mist” of passions, distractions, and earthly attachments that cloud the vision of the heart. In their sayings, fasting severs our excessive ties to this earthly life, while prayer draws the heart toward a more intimate union with God as its true nourishment.

For them, the issue is not gaining a new access, but becoming capable of living in the access already given. It is a type of leaving and cleaving. Leaving—through fasting—we divorce the mist of passions, distractions, and earthly attachments that cloud our vision, and through prayer we cleave to the realized inheritance of the Cross.

From Outer Letter to Inner Mystery

Mystical fathers like Gregory of Nyssa unfold this same dynamic in the key of contemplation. Gregory pictures the soul leaving behind what is merely visible, even “the shelter of the flesh,” grinding away what is needless and earthly in order to become a clear mirror of the divine archetype/standard—Jesus Himself.

He speaks of passing from light into “cloud” and finally into the innermost sanctuary of God’s presence, which he understands as entering ever more deeply into Christ, the true temple “not made with hands.”

Here, purification and contemplation do not replace Christ’s work; they are the way the soul is opened to what Christ has already accomplished. He goes from light to darkness because it is in the place of unknowing that we are undone, unmade, and remade in the image of the One who is present in the midst of darkness. Holding on to attachments of the flesh can also keep us in control by being controlled by fleshly desires. Trusting God to keep us when we are hungry may seem simple, yet it is a door to deeper places of trust and access.

Hebrews proclaims that the veil has been torn once for all in the crucified flesh of Jesus, granting boldness to enter the sanctuary. The Desert Fathers and mystical writers teach that through prayer, fasting, and watchfulness, the inner veil of passion, fear, and distraction is gradually removed so that the heart can actually dwell in a deeper realization of His presence with clarity and love. The objective opening belongs to Christ alone; the subjective unveiling is the work of grace in us, cooperating through prayer and fasting.

Prayer and fasting is allowing the work of the Cross to be at work in us to produce a work through us.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in

them.” Ephesians 2:10

Prayer of Reflection

“Lord Jesus, you have torn the veil in your own flesh; teach my heart to live in the access you have opened. Spirit of God, use my small offerings of fasting and prayer to remove whatever still veils my eyes from the beauty of your face.”

💡7 secrets for forming believers who are hard to deceive💡

A heresy‑resistant church doesn’t start by policing every doctrine that appears to be false. It starts by forming people so deeply in Jesus, Scripture,the Spirit, and the faith once traditioned to the saints that will expose false teaching.

Here are 7 “secrets” drawn from the early church:

1️⃣ Treat discipleship like a catechumenate (from Greek, meaning "one being instructed") is a person preparing for baptism and full initiation into the Christian Church.

Don’t rush people. Walk new believers through a real pathway of formation—teaching, testing, and worship—so they’re slowly re‑trained into a new way of life, not just added to a roll or membership.

2️⃣ Immerse disciples in the whole Bible

Help people live inside the story of Scripture, from creation to new creation, so they can spot teaching that clips verses out of context or sidelines Israel, creation, or Christ’s full work.

3️⃣ Build around the creed and rule of faith

Use a shared confession (like the Apostles’ or Nicene Creed) as a simple “map” of the faith. Teach and pray it until people can recognize distortions of Christ, the Spirit, salvation, and the church.

4️⃣ Make moral formation non‑negotiable

Tie doctrine and life together. Normal discipleship should include confession, accountability, generosity, chastity, reconciliation, and concrete obedience—so “deep” teaching without a cross‑shaped life becomes a red flag.

5️⃣ Recover deliverance and spiritual warfare

Conversion is a transfer of allegiance. Bring back clear renunciations of Satan, idols, and rival powers, plus teaching on discernment, so believers see false doctrine as part of spiritual conflict, not just “bad opinions.”

6️⃣ Distinguish two stages of formation

• Catechetical: before full participation or leadership, ground people in the basics of faith and life.

• Mystagogical: once they’re “inside,” help them go deeper into Scripture, worship, and the sacraments as a lived mystery.

This keeps spiritual authority out of the hands of the unformed.

7️⃣ Name and teach historic heresies

Briefly introduce key ancient heresies and show their modern echoes. Then train people to ask:

• What does this say about Jesus?

• About the Spirit?

• About the church and the sacraments?

• About grace, sin, and human freedom?

👉 Build a culture, not just a class. Form disciples deeply-and many heresies won’t stand a chance.

Communion as Allegiance: The Lord’s Table versus the Tables of Empire

Paul’s rebuke of the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 10–11 is not a polite reminder about church etiquette. It is a prophetic confrontation. The Lord’s Table, meant to embody the gospel, had become a mirror of Rome’s banquets. The table of the crucified Lord was being scripted by the table of Caesar and Dionysus. To understand Paul’s language of judgment and warning, we must see communion in its imperial, cultural, and supernatural dimensions.

The Roman Script of Division

In Corinth, meals were never neutral. The Greco-Roman banquet was a ritualized performance of hierarchy.
- Elites reclined in the triclinium (reclining couches along three sides) with the finest food and wine.
- The poor, including slaves and day laborers, were seated in the atrium or received inferior portions.
- The banquet reaffirmed Rome’s patronage system, reinforcing honor for the wealthy and shame for the lowly.

Bruce Winter has demonstrated how Corinthian architecture itself perpetuated this division: the dining rooms were too small to accommodate everyone equally, thereby necessitating a stratification of guests. Gordon Fee and Ben Witherington emphasize that the Corinthians had simply imported this cultural norm into the church. The wealthy arrived early, ate and drank to excess, while the poor went hungry. Paul’s response is striking: “When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat” (1 Cor 11:20). Their actions so contradicted the gospel that their meal could no longer be called communion at all.

Imperial Banquets: Meals as Allegiance

Banquets were not only social — they were political-religious acts of allegiance. In the imperial cult, feasts in honor of Caesar were feasts in honor of the gods who legitimized his rule. Augustus bore the title divi filius (“son of the divine”), aligning him with Jupiter. To eat in his honor was to confess loyalty to both emperor and empire.

The table of Dionysus also reveals this dynamic. His feasts, renowned for their excess and revelry, continued to reinforce social hierarchy and devotion to the god of wine and ecstasy. Such feasts, though wrapped in pleasure, bound participants into the Roman religious and political order.

Paul’s Alternative: Communion with the Crucified

Paul reframes the meaning of the meal:
- The cup and bread are koinōnia — real participation in the body and blood of Christ (1 Cor 10:16).
- Communion proclaims not Caesar’s lordship but the death of Christ until He comes (1 Cor 11:26).
- All divisions are leveled: “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body” (1 Cor 10:17).

Here, Paul invokes not just theology but spiritual warfare. Pagan feasts are “communion with demons” (1 Cor 10:20). In Heiser’s supernatural worldview, idols are not empty symbols but the masks of hostile powers — the rebellious elohim of Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32. To sit at their table is to fellowship with them.

Communion as Prophetic De-Scripting

Walter Brueggemann speaks of cultural “scripts” — the liturgies of empire that shape imagination. Chris Green extends this to sanctification as de-scripting: the undoing of illusions by the Lamb who opens a new script.

- Empire’s script: meals sustain class, hierarchy, allegiance to Caesar and his gods.
- The Lamb’s script: the meal proclaims cruciform love, dismantling hierarchy, binding us to Christ.

To eat in the old script is to embody empire under the guise of Eucharist. To eat in the Lamb’s script is to be de-scripted from ideology and re-scripted into the cruciform icon of Christ.

The Lord’s Table as Allegiance and Apocalypse

The Eucharist is more than a meal. It is:

- A sacrament of allegiance — binding us to the true Lord, not Caesar.
- A prophetic act — announcing that the powers of empire are unmasked and defeated at the cross (Col 2:15).
- An eschatological meal — the foretaste of Isaiah 25’s banquet, where the veil is lifted, and death is swallowed.

-An apocalyptic meal-communing with the body and blood of the Lamb brings an end to the world…as we know it. It is an exodus out of slavery of death by the death of Jesus, and into union with his life.

-He destroys death by his death…death becomes a door. The door is the wounds of Jesus, inviting us to share in his life.

✨ Transactional vs. Transfigurational Conversations: Hostipitality at the Cross-Shaped Table

A few nights ago, I was awakened by the Spirit with the phrase: “Transactional vs. Transfigurational Conversations.” In prayer I saw a table, Cross-shaped, and the Lord began to speak.

A transaction is an exchange—measured, managed, self-serving. But the table of the Lord is not transactional, it is transfigurational. It is where His hospitality is hostile to every false image in us.

Jacques Derrida spoke of hostipitality—the joining of “hospitality” and “hostility.” He reminded us that true hospitality is never without confrontation, because to truly welcome the stranger means allowing our comfort and our ideologies to be undone. The Cross-shaped table is exactly this kind of hostipitality: open to all, yet hostile to the idols and ideologies that divide us.

At this table:

• Judas’ transaction is exposed (Mark 14:18–20).

• Peter’s denial is uncovered (Mark 14:29–30).

• The tables of money changers—transactional religion—are overturned so that the table of remembrance may be set (John 2:15; 1 Cor. 11:24).

But here too, the idols and ideologies that script our lives are shattered.

Let’s begin by looking carefully at the difference between idol, idea, ideology, and icon.

Etymology: The Roots of the Words

• Idol (eidōlon) = “image, form, phantom.” A visible representation.

Paul Ricoeur: “An image that takes the place of presence, a substitute that stands where reality should be.” (The Symbolism of Evil, p. 15)

• Idea/Ideology (eidos) = “form, appearance.”

• Idea = the shape in the mind.

• Ideology = a system of ideas structuring how we see the world.

Terry Eagleton: “Ideology is the process of production of meanings, signs and values in social life.” (Ideology: An Introduction, p. 28)

So both idol and ideology are tied to images/forms—whether visible (idol) or conceptual (ideology). Both carry the potential to become substitutes for the Real.

Conceptual and Philosophical Correlation

• Idol = a physical image that mediates devotion, often replacing the reality of God with a substitute.

• Ideology = a mental or social image—a constructed worldview—that becomes unquestioned, almost sacred.

Both trap the imagination, shaping loyalty and identity.

N.T. Wright: “Idolatry happens when people give ultimate loyalty to forces within creation rather than to the Creator himself. When this occurs, not only is their worship distorted, but their very humanity becomes disordered.” (Paul and the Faithfulness of God, vol. 1, p. 71)

Walter Brueggemann: “Ideology is the self-deceptive attempt to absolutize a partial and distorted perception of reality. When ideology hardens, it functions like idolatry, demanding total allegiance and silencing alternative imagination.” (The Prophetic Imagination, p. 13)

Thus, whether visible or invisible, idols and ideologies script our lives—closing us into a false world where the lie pretends to be ultimate truth.

Walter Brueggemann reminds us that culture scripts us through the liturgies of ideology. Chris Green calls sanctification a de-scripting—an undoing of those illusions by the Living Word. And that undoing happens at the table of Jesus, where His broken body smashes the idols of power, nationalism, racism, individualism, and self-preservation.

Icon: The Alternative Script

If idols and ideologies close the imagination, then icons open it.

• Idol = opaque; it stops the gaze at itself.

• Icon = transparent; it opens the gaze into the mystery of Christ.

Christ Himself is called “the image (eikōn) of the invisible God” (Col. 1:15). Unlike idols, the icon of Christ reveals rather than replaces. The icon does not trap the imagination in illusion—it awakens it to the apocalypse of the Crucified and Risen Lord.

We are called to be icons not idols that bears the image of the ultimate icon the Crucified and Risen Lord.

To encounter the Lamb who opens the scroll is to be ruined, undone, and delivered from the scripted illusions of idols and ideologies that seek to redefine Christ and His Body.

The light of His revelation flips the script of the domain of darkness and calls us into the alternative script of His Kingdom.

🔥 To be sanctified is to be continually de-scripted from idols and ideologies and re-scripted into Christ, the true Icon who reveals the image of the Father.

The icon of Christ comes to destroy the works (idols, images) formed by the devil through work of man’s hands 1 John 3:8)

The Cross-shaped table is the place where we encounter Christ the Icon of the invisible God (Col. 1:15). Unlike idols that trap us, the Icon opens us—inviting us into communion with the Father and into reconciliation with one another.

. At this table, we learn how to love Jesus and to love our brothers and sisters beyond our ideologies. Here, enemies become family. Here, strangers are re-membered into one Body.

Paul declares:

“We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transfigured into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Cor. 3:18)

At the Cross-shaped table, His hospitality pierces our hostility. His wounds unmask our idols. His blood flips the script of the domain of darkness. And we are not left with transactions—but transfiguration.

👉🏽 The question is: At the table, are we protecting our idols and ideologies, or are we being transfigured into the image of the Icon who smashes them and makes us one?

👉🏽Another question is: Are we gathering at tables where everyone agrees with us or are we setting a table of hostipality not to agree but understand so we all agree with the Father.

Dr. Len Sweet once asked: “What is the purpose of theologians in the church? Do we need to be that deep?”

His answer: Yes. Because discipleship is more than membership—it is formation into Christ’s image where every believer is ordained to serve and reveal Jesus.

Ephesians 3:2-5

2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you,

3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly.

4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ,

5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.

6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Today I was meditating on several words the Lord has given me concerning the creative power that comes as Christ works within us making us like him.

Paul declares that he is a steward of the mysteries of Christ which means he is fiscal agent and treasurer of the riches hidden in Christ. It’s where we get the word economy indicating that glorious inheritance in Christ is seen as we his Body incarnate the inheritance found in knowing him and making him known.

I believe spiritual inheritance, riches and glory are being formed within us as the power of the Cross works within us. We are God’s masterpiece and workmanship that displays to all creation his glorious work. We are the work of God!

When Christ steps into us and we into him, the narrative of his story through the Cross brings us to the end of our false self formed in the image of old Adam and into the image of Jesus finished Adam.

Ephesians 3:1-11

11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,

The Greek word for purpose is “poieō” which is create tells us the power of new creation. The eternal purpose hidden in the mystery of Christ is a profound truth that can only come by revelation of the Crucified Christ.

Jesus The Word of God is the architect of new creation that makes all things new….within Himself. He is both the architect and the firstborn of new creation.

Scripture declares that we are the workmanship of God (Colossians 1:15-18).

False Poets & God as Poet

On the other hand, the Greek word for "poet" is "ποιητής" (poiētēs), which comes from the verb "ποιέω" (poieō), meaning "to create" or "to make." Poets in ancient Greece were considered to be creators of literary works, including epic poems, hymns, and other forms of artistic expression. They were often inspired by the Muses, the goddesses of inspiration in Greek mythology.

Prior to the fifth and sixth centuries philosophers and theologians were considered artist too. Jonas Holst an aesthetics professor says “In the earliest tradition of architectural craftsmanship the line between wisdom and art, theory and technical skills was blurred”.. In other words philosophers and theologians could create worlds with words.

Creative Power

Theophilus of Antioch 180 A.D

“The Greek poets were inspired by demons. “This is clearly evidenced by the fact that even today demons are exorcised from possessed in the name of the true God, and then the deceiving spirits confess themselves that they are the demons who once worked in the poets…” (Ad Autolycum II,8).

The Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 then is liken to the breaking in of a new world and life as we knew it ending.

In the beginning of creation, the earth was formless and void. The Hebrew phrase for “formless and void” as Dr. Len Sweet describes it, doesn’t mean empty or vacant. Formless and void conveys a disorder in chaos and darkness.

It was out of this disorder that God spoke and said let there be light or divine order. When John is his gospel declares that God the Word in the beginning of creation spoke light into the disorder and darkness, the Word on the Cross speaks that same light life into the disorder and chaos of humanity.

The work of God is creative as God is not just creator but an artist and architect. As Len Sweet would drill into our doctoral class was Jesus the carpenter means more than just working with wood. Jesus is the ultimate tekton.

The Greek word equivalent to blueprint or pattern used by the tekton was kanon. The “kanon’ provided the tekton with a framework for creating harmonius designs. The kanon was a rule of standard that governed the design and construction.

The kanon of truth the early fathers used was the Creeds therefore, the harmony of the one Father who made himself known through the Son. The Son making the Father known by way of the incarnation and the Cross. The Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son, spoke through the prophets, that is, through the Scriptures. For the early church this was the rule and blueprint (Kanon) of building the Ekklesia; His Body.

The kanon of truth is the apostolic preaching that reveals the Crucified Christ who reveals the Father, and bears the Spirit for us and as us….as the kanon and blueprint himself. He is also the tekton and builder designing the building; His body creating through his death. The kanon or blueprint are the pattern of His prints.

Through the Incarnation, Jesus has transferred the Spirit of prophecy from Himself to his disciples. The 120 in the upper room became a community of Spirit-baptized prophets. In the narrative of the gospels, Jesus is seen as a Rabbi whom the disciples follow. If Jesus is the eschatological Prophet, then the Old Testament prophets also had disciples called the sons of the prophets.

The journey of Elijah and Elisha is a story that contains images, metaphors, and a story that prophetically hints at a metanarrative (a smaller story within a larger story) that compares the relationship of Jesus and His disciples with the relationship between Elijah and Elijah.

The disciples related to Jesus not just as their Rabbi but also as an eschatological Prophet, which made them sons of the Prophet.

As sons of the Prophet, the disciples embodied and continued Jesus’s prophetic ministry by incarnating Him through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Prophecy.

This school of the prophets will be more in line with understanding how Jesus equipped his sons of the prophets (the twelve) to walk in the inheritance of the Spirit of Prophecy; the Holy Spirit.

1. Understanding the transfer of the Spirit of prophecy from Jesus to his disciples through the Incarnation: Students will learn about the significance of Jesus transferring the Spirit of prophecy to his disciples and the empowerment that comes with it.

2. Exploring the concept of discipleship in the context of the Old Testament prophets and Jesus: Students will delve into the relationship between Jesus and his disciples as both Rabbi and eschatological Prophet, drawing parallels to the relationship between Elijah and Elisha.

3. Studying the narrative of Elijah and Elisha to uncover prophetic images and metaphors: Through the story of Elijah and Elisha, students will learn to interpret the prophetic hints and metanarrative that point towards a deeper understanding of discipleship and the prophetic ministry.
