Okay, enough of the disclaimer. Let’s discuss. First I want to talk about how the English Cottage style isn’t for everyone. Next, that Mountain Modern is pretty overdone in Utah and, in my opinion, is becoming the new Modern Farmhouse. And finally I have some thoughts about interior designers becoming influencers. Plus a few other quick things I’ve been dying to talk about, so let’s dive in!

Let’s start with something that’s really been on my mind: the “English Cottage” or “Grandmillenial” aesthetic growing in popularity every day. If you aren’t familiar with this style, think patterned wallpaper, floral sofas, bolder colors, checkered tile floors, skirted sinks and cabinets, and layered interiors. While I really like this aesthetic, I’m worried about it being a trend because it is such a specific style. I was just telling my co-worker the other day that if you aren’t the type of person who geeks out over historical dramas, loves a floral dress, is an Anglophile or Francophile or just has a deep love for all things European interiors, you probably shouldn’t decorate your house entirely in this style.

It’s such a lovely style for the right person but I don’t think this is a trend or bandwagon that people should casually jump on. Similar to the Bohemian trend of the 2010s or the Tuscan era of the 90s-00s, it is specific and should really match the personality of the homeowner so that it still feels like you in 10 - 15 years when the moment has passed. If you are a fan of the trend and not sure if you should commit, there are plenty of ways to incorporate touches of it without going all-in. Add a great wallpaper to the powder bath, a William Morris fabric on a pillow, or a few antique English-style accessories, but maybe skip the floral sofa, skirted sink and patterned wallpaper in the living room. A little restraint can go a long way with a style this distinctive.

Next, as you probably know, I live in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is just 20 minutes from the mountain town of Park City, where we do a lot of design work. Are you familiar with the term “Mountain Modern”? If you aren’t, it’s pretty self explanatory - think modern architecture, large clear glass windows paired with earthy finishes like stained wood, touches of raw metals, sleek cabinetry, beige limestone floors - typically not a lot of color and minimal design. Park City, in particular, is saturated with this aesthetic.

I get it - you want a home in the beautiful mountains but you don’t want it to be a cabin with an overly rustic aesthetic because it’s the 2020s and you want a fresh take on a mountain home. I love that thought and we are doing a couple of these types of homes right now, but I also warn my clients to be careful of leaning too much into the trendiness of this aesthetic. There is something behind the aesthetic that doesn’t always sit right with me. I think it’s that I see home after home after home designed so similarly that they lack a sense of authenticity. I’m pretty sure I know at least part of what is driving the aesthetic, because I’ve talked to people who have built or are building in the area. Developers and Realtors tell homeowners that “this aesthetic sells” and they encourage them to design their homes around that idea, which I really dislike. A home that tells a story is so much more interesting - the story of the land, of the person who built it, of the people who live there, not just looking to the resale value to dictate the design.

So, if you’re investing in a home in Park City, my only request is this: don’t feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. There are so many beautiful ways to interpret a mountain home, and I’d love to see more of them.

Another thing that has been on my mind, and that I’ve been dying to talk to someone about, is the idea of designers also being influencers/content creators - often fashion/lifestyle influencers. I have nothing against influencers. I think some might even consider me a micro-influencer, so let me clarify what I mean. Being an interior designer is a skill set and business that is complex and where a lot of money is invested. It’s also a very intimate and spiritual profession - we are designing homes and spaces for our clients to live their lives in. It is their money that is funding the home and it should feel personal. The home should ultimately feel like an extension of the client, and I worry that if interior designers are also influencers/brands within themselves then clients’ homes will become an extension of their influencer brand.

As I see more interior designers blur the line between content creator/influencer-designer I feel the need to ask myself: To grow my business, do I need to be posting my outfits and links and leaning into a trendy type content to be seen? Why is that part of the equation at all? Aren’t we hiring interior designers for their skill set, period? Fashion/lifestyle and interior design can easily intersect but they are absolutely and categorically different. I love putting a face to a name and knowing who is behind the designs, but that can be as simple as a picture every now and then. And if you are a designer/influencer combination, I think that’s great and there’s definitely an audience for it, maybe it just looks a little different. There might be less traditional client work and more work with brands, redesigning your own home, owning a retail store, etc. I just listened to a great podcast with Leanne Ford and she essentially agrees. She said as a stylist/influencer/brand she doesn’t take on clients - they are different business models and skill sets - and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve also heard other designers speak about the pressure they feel to take it all on and become an “influencer” of sorts just to grow their brand and how that really starts to take away from their actual design business, and I agree.

While we are at it, I have a few other things on my mind.

I wish that Pinterest had an upgraded plan where it could be ad-free. It’s so embarrassing when I’m showing a client inspiration ideas on Pinterest and the latest Skims ad with n$pple bras is staring you in the face (yes, this happened to me).

I also wish tariffs would ease and gas prices weren’t so high - it’s making everything we buy for projects so expensive and it puts a lot of pressure on both my clients and us as we are purchasing things. We price a light fixture and then two months later, when we’re ready to order, it’s gone up. Or we get an “unexpected” shipping charge or tariff that they just pass on and say there’s nothing they can do. Every year since 2020 the price of home goods and building keeps going up. There has to be a ceiling - this just doesn’t feel sustainable.

And for my final opinion…I love how many designers and people I see jumping on the Substack bandwagon. It’s encouraging that so many people are craving a more long-form way of interacting and that we are trying to get away from typical social media algorithms.

W.D.C. Home Updates

We’re getting ready to launch two new light fixtures, and I can’t tell you how good it feels to be this close to finally sharing them. We’ve had these two in the works for a while now, and development has taken a little longer than normal, but it really has been worth the wait to get the quality and product that we wanted.

One of our biggest challenges was finding a shade for the chandelier that felt elevated and classic and not crazy expensive. After talking to many people in the lighting industry, it seems like this is a problem everyone is running into. Finding good-quality shades at a reasonable price is just hard. After almost a year of looking we have finally found the right manufacturer we are happy with. Most of the time, quality does come with a higher price tag and after searching for so long we know it’s worth it.

I’m really excited about these two and can’t wait to finally share them with you next month!

Our New Studio Collection

We also have some new lights we are offering on our website that are our go-to’s that we have used in multiple projects. These lights are a little more affordable and still high quality, made in Ireland and available to you! This collection features existing designs from the manufacturer but we are starting the process of creating some customized lights with this company as well! Keep checking our site too because we will be adding even more lights very soon.

Project Updates

We are breaking ground on four projects here in Utah before the winter comes which means we have been knee-deep in design work focused on interior architecture drawings, concept boards and getting build selections prepared and finalized as soon as possible.

The first project breaking ground is in Park City. It’s a vacation home for an out-of-state client who leans traditional but wanted a more pared back, clean-lined, organic aesthetic for this home. And exciting for us, we get to work with a new-to-us team that is top notch - Constantino Grandjacquet Architecture and Midway Construction.

Next up will be a historic-inspired farmhouse about an hour or so outside of Salt Lake City in a more rural area. The client’s family is Scandinavian so we want it to have a hint of that modern/clean Scandinavian aesthetic paired with the farmhouse architecture. I think it’s going to be stunning and it’s another stellar team we have the honor of working with - Bradford Houston Architecture and Brandon Bodell Construction.

Next we have a European-inspired home in the valley that is with Frazier Home Design and Brandon Bodell Construction. This family home is going to be filled with charm and be a great home for entertaining. You are going to love this one when it’s finished in a couple of years!

Our fourth project is up near Park City and is going to be a gorgeous family estate that is set on a hill overlooking the valley. I know I keep saying this, but another dream team on this project with Clayton Vance Architecture, Grove Homes, and Dan Gordon Landscape Architects. We are taking inspiration from Belgian and European architecture and creating a soft, yet soulful home for their family to enjoy for many years.

Current Project Updates

Our project in the Seattle area is moving along and we are so excited for our clients! We started working with them in 2022 so this has been a long time coming and it’s turning out even better than imagined.

We think the stone turned out perfectly and love the deep set windows and cedar roof. So many great details!

We just presented furniture selections for our project in Midway, Utah. This home is our most modern home in our portfolio right now and we are really excited to show you all the more modern side of W Design.

We just presented the main floor finishes for our project in the Palisades, CA this week. We are loving the classic finishes of this home and can’t wait for it all to come to life.

Judging by the first few images I’m sharing you can see I’ve been drawn to warm colors and interiors lately. There is something so cozy and happy about these colors that are drawing me in.

I thought this closet pass-through moment from Moore House Design was such a great use of the space. We have this same set-up in a couple of our projects and it’s nice to see it done so well.

More warm colors and great use of space. That rounded corner detail is just so charming - I am definitely keeping that in mind for upcoming projects.

When I’m not working, I love going for walks, hanging out with friends, driving around with good music, or finding somewhere to watch the sunset. I’ve been traveling a lot more this year and have had so much fun with all of the girls trips I’ve been on. I’ve also gotten into film photography lately, which has been such a fun way to slow down and notice the little things.

#1 Aerie Track Pants - These have become my most worn pants the last few weeks. The best thing about them is how comfy they are - a thinner, lighter version of sweatpants. I have them in two colors and am having a hard time not ordering a third.

#2 Archies Flip Flops - Another thing that I love enough to have purchased in multiple colors. I’ve worn these flip flops on all of my trips this summer and they’ve never hurt my feet (even walking around the airport, and 10k step days around the city). I love that they offer more support than a typical flip flop.

#3 Shave Serum - I’ve been loving this serum for after I shave my legs, it makes a noticeable different in how smooth they feel and reduces irritation. Plus, it smells amazing!

#4 Noyz Rinse Cycle Perfume - We got sent a perfume solid from this brand earlier this year and I loved it so much I had to go out and buy the spray version for myself. Such a fresh and clean scent.

#5 Eye Patches - I love that using eye patches has been a trend lately and these ones are my favorite. I like to store them in the fridge so that they feel extra refreshing after a long day.

#6 Brumate Waterbottle - This water bottle has come with me everywhere this year. Someone else on our team recommended this, which is why I purchased it in the first place and I love it. My two favorite things about it #1 it doesn’t leak at all and #2 it’s way easier to clean than other ones I have.

#7 H&M Striped Tee - I am a sucker for a striped shirt and I think this one is perfect for transitioning to fall. I love the boat neck style, plus it’s lightweight, inexpensive and comes in two other cute colors.

#8 Film Photo App - I’m a photographer so I take lotssss of photos and lately I’ve been using the Dazz Cam app. It’s the closest that I’ve seen to mimic film photos (and I’ve had so many people ask me how I got the photos I’ve taken with it). It’s such a fun app to experiment with and has been nice to have on my phone so I don’t have to bring my camera everywhere.

Last week, I sat down with Brent Hull for a conversation here on Substack, and I left feeling so inspired. We didn’t hold back on our honest opinions on all things - like the state of design and development particularly in America, practical things like where we would suggest people invest in their homes, and we even talked about the-elephant-in-the-room in design - that a lot of the good design we all love and admire is unaffordable for 95% of us and what to do about that.

We’ve all been there. Some spaces are so intentionally designed and full of personality that they become just as memorable as the characters who live in them.

After seeing Alice Lane’s reel about favorite homes from movies and TV shows, it sparked a conversation in the office about the spaces we’ve always loved. We asked our team to share the homes they still think about, and of course, everyone had a favorite. Here are the ones that made the list!

Father Of The Bride

This was one of the first responses we got, and honestly, it made so much sense. This traditional American style home feels familiar the moment you see it. With its warm yellow tones and classic details, it doesn’t feel like a home designed just to look good on camera. Instead, it feels like a place where people would truly gather and spend time together. A home where family traditions could grow and where generations could grow into the space. That’s probably why this one has been a favorite for so many years.

The Parent Trap

No one could agree on just one house, so we decided both deserved a spot.

Nick Parker’s Napa ranch and Elizabeth James’ London townhouse are completely different, but that’s what makes them so fun to compare. The ranch has that relaxed, indoor outdoor feel that invites you to linger, while the London townhouse feels traditional yet personal.

What we love about both is how much personality they have. From warm woods and natural textures of the ranch to the classic details and collected feel of the townhouse, each space feels purposefully designed and completely unique.

Call Me By Your Name

This one was an easy yes. The house feels beautifully imperfect in the best way. Nothing looks like it was chosen just to fill a room. The furniture, artwork, and details all feel like they have been gathered over time.

There is something so relaxing about a space that doesn’t feel overly finished. By the end of the movie, you’re not thinking about how to recreate the rooms in your own home, you’re thinking about how quickly you could pack your bags and spend a summer there.

It’s Complicated

We knew many Nancy Meyers homes were going to make the list, and this one is no exception. Everyone remembers the kitchen, but the whole house is what makes it so memorable. The spaces in this Spanish style hacienda feel beautiful without feeling too formal. You can picture people cooking, sitting around the island, and spending hours together. The balance is what makes this home so appealing. It looks beautiful, but it also feels like a place meant for everyday life.

Stepmom

The home in Stepmom has a completely different feeling than It’s Complicated. While both have that Nancy Meyers charm, this one feels a little more personal and relaxed. The spaces feel like they are ever changing, with pieces added because they were loved rather than because everything needed to match perfectly.

What makes these rooms work is that they don’t feel overly decorated. They feel comfortable and natural, like the home has grown with the people living there.

Jumanji

The Parrish mansion feels like a place with a past before the story begins. For such a grand house, it never feels cold. One of our favorite spots in the home is the staircase, but honestly the way the whole home is designed balances all of the dramatic architecture. It makes the whole house feel like the perfect setting for a story where anything can happen.

You’ve Got Mail

This one came up with a comment that made us laugh because honestly we’ve probably all had the same thought. Who didn’t watch this movie and wonder how we could own a bookstore and somehow afford an apartment like that in New York?

Kathleen’s brownstone apartment feels like a space that slowly became her own. The bookshelves are full, the patterns are mixed, and nothing feels too precious. It feels personal without feeling like everything was chosen at once, which is what makes the apartment feel so much like her.

I Am Love

This home feels completely different from the others on the list. The interiors feel so connected to the architecture and the surrounding landscape that everything works together as one experience.

This home has such a distinct feeling. The rooms feel bold but still controlled in a way that feels really intentional. Nothing feels like it is competing for attention. The home sets the tone for the entire film and pulls you into its world. You can actually tour this home in Milan - it’s the Villa Necchi Campiglio - and I hear it’s a must see.

Bridgerton

Choosing just one home from Bridgerton was impossible.

Every episode gives you another room to admire. The homes are full of personality and lean into the details that make the show’s design so unique. It’s such a fun reminder that your home doesn’t have to be afraid of being a little unexpected. Sometimes the spaces we remember most are the ones that take a chance.

The Other Bennett Sister

There’s something special about a historical home, especially one with classic British charm. The interiors immediately stood out with their rich colors and intricate details. Every room feels finished and intentional, with every piece having its place. The spaces feel elegant, timeless, and like they were made to be admired.

Seeing a house in a movie can make you think, “I get why this is beautiful,” but then you watch the movie and suddenly see the home completely differently.

A still photo can show you the details but seeing the space in the story gives you a better sense of its personality. You start to notice the way the rooms connect, the feeling of the home and how the space reflects the people who live there. Sometimes a room might not stand out in a single shot but watching the movie makes you understand why it works. It’s less about one perfect image and more about the feeling the home creates.

We could have kept going forever because there are so many spaces worth talking about. The fun part about these interiors is that they let us dream a little. They remind us to play with color, embrace the unexpected, and create spaces that feel like our own.

Now we’re curious, what interior has inspired you? What room do you wish you could walk into? And what home did we miss that deserves a little more attention?

In today's post, we'll get more into the second part of selecting hardwoods, which is the style. This includes stain color, plank size, and pattern. For the sake of this article, we are going to touch on 8 projects and why we chose the color, width, and patterns that we did.

Before we get into each of the selections, here are a few notes on plank size and pattern:

• As a general rule of thumb, plank width size should coordinate with the architectural style of the home (if possible). Most affordable flooring comes in a 7-8” wide plank so you will see that in a lot of homes, but ideally if it’s an older home we like to see a smaller width, like 4-5-6” or if it’s a farmhouse or Belgian-inspired home maybe a 9-10” wide floor. Do your research and choose your width from there.

• When it comes to pattern, smaller planks are usually necessary. If we’re incorporating a pattern, it’s most often herringbone (which I have in my own home), but we’ve also done chevron before (and loved it - linked below!).

• Patterned floors typically lean more traditional. When deciding where to use them, I’d choose a space where you (1) aren’t planning to put a rug and (2) want to make a statement or create a space that feels a little more special. In my experience, that’s usually an entryway, a kitchen, or maybe a living space where you want to define the area a bit more.

We most often go with a mid-tone stain because it blends well with other finishes and works with a wide range of home styles. Most of the time we’re using engineered hardwood, so we’re selecting a pre-finished floor rather than choosing the stain ourselves. The floor in this home is called Husk, and it has just enough variation to add character. The base color palette for this home is a creamy white so we chose a warm wood tone to compliment the warmer paint colors. We also chose a smaller plank width of 5 9/16” to create the feeling of a historic home.

In our Elk Ranch project the clients wanted a clean, more contemporary take on a ranch home. It felt like the perfect place to use a lighter wood with wider planks to create a more modern feel - leaning Scandinavian rather than trendy.

Also this particular part of the podcast episode of Wild Card with Terry Tempest Williams is worth a watch for every woman (and every man who wants to really understand what it feels like to be a strong woman in this world). Such a powerful clip and touched me deeply.

That’s not to say these things aren’t worth considering—they absolutely are. But I think they often get more attention than they deserve. Meanwhile, there are other design elements, like window treatments, that I wish we would spend a little more time thinking about.

Below are a few of the things I think homeowners tend to overemphasize, and why they may not matter quite as much as you think.

1. picking a paint color

People often get caught up worrying about north-facing light versus south-facing light, winter light versus summer light, and every other lighting scenario imaginable when choosing a paint color.

The truth is, picking paint is already tricky enough without overcomplicating it. If you have a room that gets an extreme amount of natural light—or almost none at all—it’s worth taking that into consideration. But light changes throughout the day and across the seasons, so there’s no perfect way to account for every condition.

Instead, choose a color you genuinely love, put a large swatch on the wall, and live with it for a few days. If you still love it after seeing it in different lighting throughout the day, go for it.

2. grid windows

We hear this concern all the time—that grid windows will block the view or be a pain to clean.

In reality, neither of these is much of a concern. The next time you’re in a home, restaurant, or shop with grid windows, pay attention to whether the grids actually bother you. I think that they won’t be as much of a distraction as you’d think, your eye tends to look right through them.

As for cleaning, they really aren’t any more difficult to maintain.

3. planning for every scenario

You don’t need a dedicated room for every possible activity in your house. While it’s important to prioritize the things you truly value, trying to plan for every scenario can quickly lead to wasted square footage and budget.

You’ve probably seen large homes with different types of rec rooms like a basketball court, golf simulator, theater, bowling alley, etc. I’m not saying you should completely get rid of these rooms, but they do take up a lot of space, so I’d focus on keeping rooms in your plan that you know you’ll use daily (or let some spaces serve multiple purposes).

Sometimes we also put too much emphasis on how our homes will function for rare occasions instead of everyday life. Try to plan your living spaces around the 6 people who live there every day rather than the handful of times each year you'll be entertaining 40 people.

4. zooming in too much

It’s easy to zoom in on individual decisions during construction. The flooring gets installed and suddenly feels way too warm-toned—but it’s sitting next to bright white drywall with none of the other finishes in place.

I understand why this feels stressful. These decisions are expensive, and it’s hard to know if you’ve made the right choice. But most design decisions can’t be judged in isolation. Just like putting together an outfit or viewing a painting halfway through, you need to see all the pieces together before deciding whether something works.

5. how things wear overtime

We often put too much emphasis on how things will wear over time. It’s natural to want a home that looks “perfect” forever, so it’s easy to gravitate toward products that promise to be indestructible. But nothing is bulletproof, and sometimes those choices aren’t the most timeless design decisions.

Homes are meant to be lived in. Floors get scuffed, marble gets stained, and furniture develops character. That’s part of the story of a well-loved home. You don’t walk through a centuries-old castle in Europe and criticize every worn stone or scratch; those marks are part of its history and charm. I actually wrote about some of the furniture in my own home, how it’s aging, and why I think that’s OK.

6. home technology & appliances

We sometimes focus too heavily on technology (speaker systems or smart home systems) or high-end appliances that can be overrated and hard to maintain (ice makers), instead of investing in finishes that truly impact the look, feel, and function of a home.

Appliances and gadgets come and go, but materials, lighting, and thoughtful design choices are what you’ll live with every day.

The goal isn't to care less about your home, it's to worry less about the things that probably won't make or break it. Every project involves hundreds of decisions, and in my opinion, not all of them deserve the same amount of mental energy. If you can keep the bigger picture in mind, the whole process will be that much better.

That said, there are a few “rules” we almost always follow when choosing rugs, and I thought they’d be worth sharing.

Rugs can be surprisingly tricky. They’re often one of the larger purchases in a room, and getting the size, material, or style wrong can have a big impact on how the space feels. So if you’re currently staring at a dozen rug options and feeling stuck, here are the guidelines we use when making selections for our projects.

1. Size matters more than style

Always go bigger than smaller, think of the rug as defining the space. In an open floor plan, the rug is going to separate the living room from the kitchen or dining room. In a living room, the rug should extend beyond the sofa and anchor the furniture — defining that “this square” is the living room.

If you're deciding between a very stylish or detailed rug that's too small (and very expensive) and a simple rug that's the right size, choose the larger rug every time.

2. Dining rooms & eating areas need practical rugs

Under a dining table, a flat-weave wool rug is great. We also tend to use lots of pattern in these areas to cover all the sins.

Dining rooms see spills, crumbs, and constant chair movement, so a patterned rug can hide wear and stains really well. This can also be a great place to use a vintage rug. They can be more expensive, but they're incredibly forgiving and tend to age beautifully (foreshadowing my next tip).

I worked with Mark Christensen of Tarkus Tile on my own home 13 years ago and to this day he is still one of the best tile installers I have worked with so I was thrilled when he made time to talk to us. I used our hour together to ask every tile-related question I could think of—from design decisions to installation considerations and long-term performance.

I hope this conversation provides valuable insight and helps guide you through your next tiling project.

What makes for a great tile installation? —

In this interview we truly started from the beginning and the main takeaway was that proper preparation is everything. Preparation can be broken down into the following categories and it’s important that the installer you have selected has experience with and will be taking all these steps (it can take a couple of days of prep before they are even ready to start installing tile).

• Surface prep (flat, plumb, square walls): Your installer should be making sure that your walls and floors are flat, plumb, and square rather than simply tiling over existing conditions. For anyone who’s unfamiliar with tiling terms, a plumb prep wall is a wall that has been straightened, flattened, and made perfectly vertical (plumb) so that it is ready for tile to be installed. He emphasized how important it is to take the proper steps in prepping and leveling the wall so there aren’t any imperfections.

• Waterproofing: This is one of the most important steps in the preparation process, specifically for showers and is one of the biggest areas of failure when it comes to installers. Systems such as Schluter are effective products, but they often fail because they are installed incorrectly. Mark said “The waterproofing system itself is often less important than whether the installer follows the manufacturer's instructions and tests the assembly before tile is installed.” Homeowners should verify that their installer has specific waterproofing experience before hiring them.

  • Because this step is so important, Flood Testing should always be performed by your installer. And this is actually something you can test yourself if you are worried. (To flood test your shower - plug the drain, fill the shower pan with water, and monitoring the water level for leaks)

• Dry layouts: I brought up dry layouts because this is something that we really like to see before tile is installed in our clients homes. Mark said that he always does dry layouts for his own process and that all good installers most likely do. (a dry layout is when the tile installer lays out the tile on the floor in the exact dimensions and design as they will be installing on the shower wall to work out the kinks and get approval from the client/designer before installing it in the shower)

• Proper installation

• Transitions: This is one of the biggest challenge areas when it comes to tile installation. Transitions between tile and hardwoods is something that needs to be planned for in the framing and subfloor installation process—not when the tile installer shows up. Ideally, when you move from hardwood to tile, there should be little to no height difference. The transition should feel intentional rather than creating a trip hazard.

NY site visit—Clover Leaf Farm

Let’s start with an update on our Clover Leaf Farm project. Three of us—myself, the lead designer on the project (Georgia), and the project manager (Stacey)—recently took a site visit to Bedford, NY. As usual, when in NY we try to enjoy the city as much as we can in the short time we are there. We were able to fit in a Broadway show (Ragtime) and enjoy some great restaurants (when in Bedford we love going to the Bedford Post Inn).

We made the most of our design time as well visiting showrooms where we finally learned how to properly pronounce one of our favorite fabric lines Elitis (eh-lee-tees) and discovered a new-to-us fabric line we are really loving - Sean Leffers.

This was our first time seeing the home fully constructed in person and it exceeded our expectations. Abelow Sherman Architects and R.C. Torre have really done an amazing job with this home.

The details on the home are so thoughtful and well executed. The copper flashing to protect the millwork, the beautiful windows, cedar roof, even the way they did the stone edging on the driveway. Every detail is thoughtful and intentional.

The site visit served as an opportunity to also double check furniture measurements, paint colors, and finalize the furnishings of the home. I particularly wanted to check our selections against the interior stone walls to make sure the colors of the furnishings and finishes compliment each other and to avoid things feeling muddy and drab. We feel really confident in our selections now and are moving into the ordering phase and onto accessories.

Cedar Heights photoshoot

While I was away for the site visit in Bedford, the team was doing a photoshoot at a project we finished up a couple months ago in Utah.

We split this shoot into two parts. We did the first half in March but a few things weren’t finished, so we came back to capture those details and get photos with the pretty views of their orchard in the summer when everything is green.

You may have seen some sneak peaks on Instagram and I will share some here as well, but we are excited to release this project and all the sources from it soon - probably late summer or early fall.

Ok, that’s all I am going to share for now but I am looking forward to seeing the final photos as much as anyone. We took over 2,000 iPhone photos, so we don’t have a shortage of photos to share!

New Wallpaper Collection

You’ve probably seen us sharing snippets of the new wallpapers and now our second round of samples have arrived. There is something special about grasscloth, about the texture and vibe that it adds, that has my heart. I’m really excited about this collection. It feels good to be getting these finished so I can finally use them in our projects and hopefully see them in your homes.

Have you seen our newest light fixture - The Bedford II Sconce? It is the most handsome light and I love the historic/modern vibe that it has.

And coming soon is a new sconce offered in 4 different colors. Below is a rough mockup of the sconces. We worked hard to perfect the paint colors and finish and should be shooting them in a week or two - hoping to have them available to purchase in a month!

Interior design demands a deep understanding of how clients actually live, day after day.

• Interior Design ASMR - I spent way more time than one should watching this upholstery account on Instagram. Watching him reupholster chairs is strangely comforting and fascinating. A great follow.

We recently had the opportunity to interview Jen of Reset Your Nest to get a professional organizer’s perspective on kitchen organization. We asked about common storage mistakes, must-have organizational tools, and design decisions that can make a kitchen easier (or harder) to maintain. Jen shared practical insights that every homeowner (and designer) can benefit from.

The First Thing a Professional Organizer Notices

Jen shared with us that the first thing she does before touching anything in a kitchen is asses the situation.

“When I walk into a kitchen, I’m looking for signs that the current system is difficult to maintain,” she says.

This could mean piles of paper accumulating on the counters, small appliances that never seem to get put away, or clutter gathering in corners. From there, she starts mentally mapping the kitchen. Where is the dishwasher? Where are the dishes stored? Is there a pantry? Are there upper cabinets or mostly drawers? How close are cooking tools to the stove?

So an initial tip would be that before you buy bins or decanters or a label maker, take inventory of how your kitchen functions. Try to think through some of the above questions that can help guide your organizational decisions.

The Best Organized Kitchens Feel Obvious

One of Jen’s core beliefs is that organization should feel intuitive.

There are some universal principles that apply to nearly every kitchen. Dishes, glasses, and silverware should live near the dishwasher. Pots, pans, cooking utensils, oils, and spices should be close to the stove.

But beyond those basics, every household is different.

A family with young children will use a kitchen differently than empty nesters. A couple who cooks every night will have different needs than someone who entertains frequently or orders takeout several times a week.

“The goal isn’t creating the same kitchen for everyone,” Jen explains. “It’s creating a kitchen that works for the people who live there.”

Common Kitchen Mistakes (Even in High-End Homes)

Maybe this is surprising, but some of the biggest functional issues show up in beautifully designed kitchens. I’ve noticed this and apparently Jen has too.

A few challenges Jen encounters regularly include:

• Trash pull-outs located far from the primary prep area

• Insufficient storage near the dishwasher for dishes and glassware

• Kitchens with only drawers but none deep enough for large pots or small appliances

• Overloading cabinetry with specialty inserts that sound useful but don’t actually improve functionality and are hard to clean

Rev-a shelf inserts are overhyped in her opinion. “The only cabinet/drawer upgrades that I love are the spice jar inserts and then I love customizing each drawer while we are moving a client in. Custom drawer inserts like Salt By Sabrina drawer inserts can come at a later time and be lovely, but ordering custom drawer inserts before you’ve moved in presents challenges.”

Organizing for Real Life

One of the biggest misconceptions about organization is that it’s only about where things go, but it’s actually better to think about who is using the space and then deciding where things go.

Some scenarios to think about may be: If children regularly help unload the dishwasher, it makes sense to place their dishes in lower drawers they can reach independently. If someone makes a smoothie every morning, creating a dedicated smoothie station can eliminate daily friction.

Visibility vs. Concealment

This is one of those topics where there isn’t a universal right answer. Jen said she personally prefers neatly labeled, closed storage because it reduces visual clutter and creates a calmer environment. At the same time, she acknowledges that many people operate on an “out of sight, out of mind” basis.

The best solution isn’t necessarily the prettiest one—it’s the one you’ll actually maintain. But Jen does recommend labels. She says they “create consistency and help everyone maintain the system.”

Storage Solutions Actually Worth Investing In

We asked Jen where homeowners should spend their money when it comes to storage solutions and her answer was surprisingly practical.

She recommends sourcing storage solutions specifically for the space they’re intended to serve. Don’t just go to Home Goods and get some cute baskets that you may or may not use. “Well-fitting bins that maximize shelf or drawer space will almost always outperform generic storage products purchased on impulse.”

Q1: How do you choose window coverings for an entire house and have them flow? And specifically what treatments do you recommend for French casement windows?

We approach window coverings more from a room-by-room case vs. a whole home. For French casement windows, drapes are the best option, but an outside-mount Roman shade could work as well because the windows push out rather than into the home. As far as the overall style of window coverings in the home and making sure they flow, I would just say that I would keep the overall style the same. So if you like a more traditional window covering, then you wouldn’t do modern, minimal-looking roller shades in a sleek fabric in one room and French pleat drapes in another that look really traditional. Does that make sense? So try and keep the styling consistent, but you can change fabrics, incorporate woven woods, and do all types of coverings - drapes, Romans, rollers, and café curtains - all in one home. Just keep the styling consistent.

Q2: Once you have a collection of inspiration images and you’re ready to start the design for a room, what’s your first step? Do you typically start with the rug or a certain piece of furniture? Does it vary?

Great question. It does vary, but I would say that I tend to start with the element in the room that I am most excited about. Maybe it’s a great rug I found, or maybe it’s the art piece we know we’re using in the space. Maybe it’s a striped sofa. There is always a bit of a launching-off point, and it’s typically me wanting to use a particular piece in the room and figuring out how we can make the most of that piece or feature. If all of my inspiration photos have a white slipcovered sofa, I know that’s where I’m starting. Sometimes it’s finding the repeating element that you keep gravitating toward in your concept images and knowing that’s the piece you want to use or source first.

Q3: Hoping for feedback about 2 features on marble/stone kitchen counters: Does anyone have drain boards next to their sink? Thoughts after real use? Do you wish it was flat? & What about a drip ledge under the sink? Does it interfere with cabinet space and you regret? Or stick out too much? Or doesn’t really protect cabinet and you love it?

What a gorgeous kitchen! So excited for you! I love my drip edge. I have to re-oil it (it’s wood) but that’s as easy as wiping it. Not hard at all. We’ve never done an integrated drainboard because I’ve heard mixed reviews but I do know some people love it. I love the look and the idea of one — I just can’t speak to how much you will love the function.

Q4: I’m dead set on exterior mullions for our tradition European English build. I find interior black ones get lost without the homes interior lights on. My husband is dead set on interior because it’s easier to clean. Help break this tiebreaker!

I don’t think windows with exterior mullions are that hard to clean, honestly. They aren’t as easy as interior grids, but they aren’t difficult either, and the value and look they add to a home over time is absolutely worth it. Interior grids don’t give you the shadow lines and depth that mullions are meant to add. They lack dimension and, in my opinion, just aren’t worth the “ease” of cleaning. If cleaning windows with mullions were really difficult, I wouldn’t recommend them. It takes a little more time, but the payoff is there 100 percent.

Q5: I ordered a Carrara marble tile (octagon and dot mosaic) for my powder bath and now I’m second guessing it. I have three small kids and this is right off the kitchen and garage entry. Is marble a terrible idea here because it’s a high traffic area?

I think for a powder bath you should be okay, but it will show wear and character over time. If you can make it through the awkward “teenage years” where there is one or two etched spots until the entire floor has patina I think you will be very happy long term.

Q6: I’m working on a traditional formal dining room where the white vinyl window is off-centered and it’s the first thing you see when you walk into the room. Would you center the chandelier to the room? Any design tips to make the room feel more intentional, not accidental? Would color drenching the entire dining room help?

I would center the chandelier in the room and use a color that is similar to the color of the window so we don’t call more attention to it. I’m thinking a classic, white dining room with millwork and maybe rich woods in the table?

Q7: For hardwood floors, do you use pre finished or stain on sight. What is the process used for stain on sight?

We like both options for different reasons and for different clients. Typically, we’ll stain on site for solid hardwood floors, whereas pre-finished is more common with engineered hardwood floors. The stain-on-site process is a bit more involved. From what I understand, stain-on-site hardwood is installed unfinished, then sanded, custom-stained, and sealed on site. I definitely prefer the pre-finished as the color is more stable and predictable.

Q8: What size mirror would you recommend for a 72” vanity with a single sink? I do plan to put sconces on each side, but most 72” vanities I see have two mirrors with two sinks.

Here is a large single sink vanity with a regular mirror above with two sconces. I like it, not necessarily love it. I think I would frame in a mirror that matches the length of the vanity possibly and mount the sconces on top.

There’s definitely some overlap between the two, but for photoshoots we typically add our own touches with florals, props, and artwork that feel especially aligned with our brand — and maybe a little less personal to the client. When it comes to a client’s actual home outside of a shoot, the client is usually much more involved in the selections.

Budget is also a big factor in how much “styling” and how many accessories we purchase specifically for a client versus how much we bring in temporarily just for the shoot.

One thing that may set us apart from other design firms is that we have a dedicated stylist (Annie) who handles all of our accessory procurement, which takes that responsibility off our designers’ plates. Annie also handles all of our shoot styling, which is incredibly helpful because by the time install and shoot day come around, she knows the project inside and out. We’re sharing a little behind-the-scenes of our stylist Annie’s process below…

Our Process

Our approach to the final step in the design process is a little fluid depending on the project, but it typically follows this general formula.

Before any designing even happens, our team divides the overall budget among lighting, furniture, window coverings, and accessories. We lump art, pillows, bedding, and styling objects into accessories. This is the final layer that can really make a house feel like a home and, if not explicitly planned for ahead of time, tends to be the first thing cut from the budget if we’re not mindful from the get-go.

Once hard finishes, lighting, furniture, and rugs are selected, the design team onboards me (Annie). We talk through each space, discuss the overall vision, pull out all the furniture fabric samples, and map out areas where they’d like to see art. This is also when the designers relay any relevant information from the client. In addition, we always send out an accessories questionnaire. Some examples of these questions are:
