On August 31, 2026, USA TODAY reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security circulated a secret intelligence bulletin naming Laura Berlin’s website, “Who is Profiting from ICE?” Berlin, a Texas stay-at-home mother of two teenagers with nonprofit-communications experience, built the Google Map from corporate filings, government databases, and campaign-finance records tracing companies, agencies, contractors, and politicians connected to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. DHS warned that Berlin’s website could aid “local anarchist extremists” and routed the material through HSEC SIN 8, an intelligence category DHS had previously used for domestic-terrorism information. Red lettering acknowledged that “some of this information describes First Amendment-protected activities.”

Laura Berlin began the project in April 2025 after seeing federal agents round up people and fly men to a Salvadoran prison without due process. President Donald Trump invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act on March 15 against alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua; officials removed 137 Venezuelan men under the wartime law to CECOT in Tecoluca, El Salvador, and U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled June 4 that the government had denied them notice and an opportunity to challenge removal. Berlin also saw then-DHS Secretary Kristi Noem pose before shirtless CECOT prisoners and said, “That situation really haunted me.” Berlin’s sons are part Guatemalan, and she said her darker-skinned son receives different treatment from the world; Berlin began asking who owned the charter aircraft, detention centers, and companies receiving government money for deportations.

The private-prison corporations received nearly $1 billion combined from ICE in 2025; by June 2026, Jersey City officials said they operated more than half of roughly 70,000 ICE detention beds and sought capacity above 100,000. After Wells Fargo and Bank of America pledged to stop working with them, Berlin traced financing to Citizens Bank, N.A., the banking subsidiary of Providence, Rhode Island-based Citizens Financial Group, which reported $233.8 billion in assets and more than 1,000 branches. CoreCivic had been a Citizens client since 2011 and GEO since 2018; Jersey City officials said Citizens helped the companies obtain more than $2.5 billion in financing.

Boston, Massachusetts, organizers found Berlin’s boycottcitizens.org research and formed the De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition in early December 2025 after helping force Avelo Airlines to end its roughly $150 million ICE charter contract in January 2026. An ICE agent killed 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 7, the day of the coalition’s first planned Citizens protest; Berlin’s traffic surged from several thousand visits to nearly 10 million, dozens of volunteers joined, and organizers mounted about three dozen January protests.

Organizers planned 70 protests in 12 states by March. By June, the campaign had expanded to 140 protests across 17 states, while customers pledged $25 million in withdrawals. Coalition members also bought billboards and confronted Citizens at its annual shareholder meeting. On July 14, they flew a banner above Citizens Bank Park during Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game.

On June 10, Jersey City, New Jersey, Mayor James Solomon said officials had begun withdrawing $265 million from Citizens Bank. Officials cited the bank’s financing of GEO Group and CoreCivic and GEO’s Newark ICE detention center, Delaney Hall, where detainees launched a hunger strike over conditions and alleged human-rights abuses. Jersey City cited forced labor, preventable deaths, understaffing, and medical neglect. Montclair Township, New Jersey, voted July 14 to withdraw $91.1 million and remove Citizens Bank as a depository. Three days later, the bank announced its exit from GEO Group and CoreCivic credit facilities.

Citizens Bank denied that the campaign caused its July 17 decision. On July 2, CoreCivic sold its 2,560-bed California City and 1,994-bed Otay Mesa facilities to DHS for $1.5 billion gross. CoreCivic expected $1.1 billion net. The bank said the federal government planned to purchase additional GEO facilities. Citizens called the withdrawal “a business decision based on changed commercial circumstances.” The bank said its view of both companies remained unchanged. Citizens also complained that activists had dragged the bank into “what is largely a political matter.”

Citizens rejected the activists’ explanation. Chenoweth and Stephan document how sustained nonviolent pressure can make governments, corporations, and their allies abandon defended positions.

Harvard political scientist Erica Chenoweth and political scientist Maria J. Stephan examined 323 major struggles from 1900 to 2006. Their study focused on efforts to overthrow governments or achieve territorial independence. Nonviolent resistance succeeded more than twice as often as violent resistance. Chenoweth defines civil resistance as coordinated, unarmed action. People withdraw money and labor while refusing participation and compliance. Political and corporate leaders depend on those forms of support to maintain disputed policies.

Customers withdrew money from Citizens Bank, the Providence, Rhode Island-based lender financing GEO Group and CoreCivic, while Jersey City and Montclair removed more than $350 million in public funds and organizers mobilized protests across 17 states.

Berlin’s map identifies ICE-related relationships involving AT&T, Comcast, Dell, Deloitte, FedEx, Motorola, and Palantir, while her political research tracks GEO, CoreCivic, and private corrections contractor Management and Training Corporation. Berlin found contributions involving more than 450 candidates, nearly 80 in Arizona alone, across both parties, including Donald Trump, Greg Abbott, Jeanne Shaheen, Bennie Thompson, and Andy Beshear. GEO reported $1.7 million in federal and national political spending and $2.3 million in state and local spending during 2025; CoreCivic reported $1.7 million federally and $1.6 million in state and local lobbying.

DHS attached Berlin’s lawful research to warnings that anti-ICE actors could commit vandalism using spray paint, projectiles, blunt and edged objects, and improvised incendiary devices. USA TODAY reported that DHS had previously used HSEC SIN 8 for information involving ISIS beheading videos and pipe bombs; Philadelphia Police Department Sgt. Eric Gripp said police supplied information for situational awareness, not to criminalize protected speech. Ryan Shapiro, executive director of Property of the People, which obtained the bulletin, accused DHS of treating even mild anti-ICE dissent as extremism or terrorism. USA TODAY also documented federal pressure on Apple over ICE Block, investigations of Minnesota labor and climate groups, and scrutiny of a New York man who emailed ICE Director Todd Lyons.

The Supreme Court has held that government generally may not punish people for publishing lawfully obtained, truthful information about matters of public significance. Berlin’s research also supported peaceful political boycotts and divestment, which the Court recognized in NAACP v. Claiborne Hardware as protected forms of nonviolent political and social pressure.

On January 21, 2026, Trump called Minnesota demonstrators “fake protests done by agitators and professional insurrectionists” and “professional troublemakers”; PolitiFact found the evidence showed a largely volunteer protest movement and rated Trump’s accusation false. On June 20, 2025, then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned, “Those who dox our ICE agents will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Laura did not know DHS had circulated her work until USA TODAY reporters contacted her before publishing their August 31, 2026 investigation. She said her “stomach dropped” when she learned about the bulletin before she “couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity”; coalition organizers required protesters to remain peaceful and obey the law.

DHS declined to address Berlin’s bulletin specifically and said information from local partners “helps sharpen the national threat picture.” “This information is available from the government’s own databases,” Berlin said. “It’s troubling that DHS would portray a tool meant to make public records more accessible as potentially threatening.”

Public-policy scholars David Weil, Archon Fung, Mary Graham, and Elena Fagotto found that disclosure changes behavior when people can use published information in decisions involving their own money.

Berlin’s research turned that information into leverage. Organizers intensified pressure on Citizens Bank, while two New Jersey municipalities removed more than $350 million in public funds.

On August 25, 2026, the Trump administration deported Cristy Maryori Villafranca-Trejo to Honduras and separated Villafranca-Trejo from her husband, active-duty Army Sgt. Hedar Leonel Turcios Juarez, and their six-year-old U.S.-citizen daughter in El Paso, Texas. Federal agents had detained Villafranca-Trejo on July 11 near Fort Bliss while she pursued lawful permanent residence through military parole-in-place. Turcios Juarez, a U.S. citizen serving in the Army, became the child’s sole caregiver. He began taking his daughter to first grade instead of attending morning training and postponed a military assignment. Villafranca-Trejo did not have a criminal record when federal officials deported her.

On August 18, 2026, The Marshall Project documented Ana Kikabidze and her children, 11-year-old Lizi and 14-year-old Nikoloz, inside the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas. ICE had confined the mother and children for weeks while they fought deportation. Kikabidze, an interior designer, remained behind detention walls with Lizi and Nikoloz while her husband, a former banking professional, remained outside.

Six days later, the Trump administration blamed the families ICE confined for a housing crisis those families neither created nor controlled.

At an August 24, 2026, rally in Brewer, Maine, Vice President JD Vance supplied that accusation. Vance blamed immigrants for occupying homes that “ought go by right to American citizens” and claimed deportations lowered rents.

Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies documented contrary evidence in The State of the Nation’s Housing 2026, released June 17, 2026. The report found immigration and household growth falling sharply while affordability deteriorated. Existing-home sales remained near three-decade lows. Renter cost burdens set another record; high prices and borrowing costs excluded households from homeownership. Harvard documented disappearing low-rent units and called federal housing assistance profoundly underfunded.

While Vance blamed immigrants, Airbnb operators were removing homes from the long-term rental market. A 2021 Journal of Urban Economics study by Hans Koster, Jos van Ommeren, and Nicolas Volkhausen examined Airbnb restrictions across Los Angeles County. Researchers found Airbnb shifts existing housing away from long-term rentals and raises residential property values far more in tourist-heavy neighborhoods.

On August 17, HHS and HUD announced “Treatment First,” replacing Housing First with treatment, supervision, recovery, and self-sufficiency. Trump’s July 24, 2025, Executive Order 14321, “Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets,” instructed agencies to favor jurisdictions banning camping, clearing encampments, and expanding civil commitment. Across the country, many state legislatures are translating that federal strategy into law. Louisiana enacted one of the clearest examples. During Louisiana’s 2026 Regular Session, Republican state Representative Debbie Villio introduced HB 211; Governor Jeff Landry signed the legislation on June 9, 2026, as Act 788, the “Streets to Success Act.”

Judges may place eligible homeless defendants in treatment and supervised probation for at least twelve months. Defendants must plead guilty while courts may assess treatment and supervision costs according to participants’ resources. When defendants cannot pay, judges may order “supervised work for the benefit of the community” for a parish, municipality, state agency, political subdivision, or charity.

Act 788 lets prosecutors refer defendants to Homelessness Court after arrest or summons for a qualifying offense. Louisiana courts may separate homeless parents from their children and confine parents in residential treatment rather than community placement. The law requires examiners to review family history before recommending care but does not require residential programs to admit participants’ children or keep their households together.

Through the Department of Health and Human Services and its Office of Refugee Resettlement, the administration can send children to facilities across multiple states while parents remain elsewhere in the detention system. HHS can sever physical contact and scatter families throughout the administration’s nationwide child-confinement network.

Since January 20, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confined more than 6,200 children under the Trump administration, including at least 500 babies and toddlers.

Historian Jennifer Putnam documented Nazi manipulation of prisoners’ time in “The Struggle against Timelessness: Prisoner Experiences of Time in Nazi Concentration Camps,” which Holocaust and Genocide Studies published in 2023. Putnam found that SS authorities denied prisoners clocks, watches, calendars, and reliable dates while guards dictated when prisoners woke, worked, ate, stood for roll call, and slept. By obstructing their ability to measure duration or anticipate what came next, the SS narrowed prisoners’ lives to schedules the concentration-camp system imposed.

That temporal domination followed physical seizure. Before Nazi Germany began systematic mass killing, Hitler’s government removed political opponents from their homes and communities and transported them to unknown detention sites. After Hitler became chancellor in January 1933, SA men, SS officers, police, and Gestapo agents arrested Communists, Social Democrats, and trade unionists without trial. Nazi officers denied detainees control over destination, confinement period, and conditions.

Nazi officials converted warehouses, factories, ships, and abandoned industrial buildings into camps for political detainees. By July 1933, they held nearly 27,000 political prisoners nationwide. The SS opened Dachau near Munich in March 1933 and standardized seizure, transport, and confinement.

That system later seized Gerda Weissmann and destroyed her family. Gerda was eighteen when German occupation authorities drove the Weissmann family from their home into the Bielsko ghetto in occupied Poland. In June 1942, German forces liquidated the ghetto, separated Gerda from her parents, and sent her to Bolkenhain labor camp in Lower Silesia. Camp officials forced her to work in a textile factory. She never saw her parents again.

Gerda endured transfers through several labor camps and a death march before American soldiers liberated her in May 1945. Her parents and brother did not survive the Holocaust.

On April 29, the Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center warned that HB 211 could force homeless people into involuntary treatment and “labor without pay.” The next day, National Homelessness Law Center communications director Jesse Rabinowitz accused lawmakers of “using the unhoused to build more camps, to normalize forced labor.” Two days earlier, a Senate committee advanced HB 211. Rabinowitz likened the measure to Jim Crow and forced prison labor. Louisiana is not isolated: many other states are expanding camps, coerced treatment, and penalties targeting homelessness.

International pediatric organizations must investigate the Trump administration’s expanding nationwide immigration-detention network. ICE has nearly doubled detention sites while the administration converts warehouses and reopens prisons.

On August 24, 2026, 77 Democratic members of Congress demanded answers after HHS pursued multiple facilities capable of imprisoning 3,000 children each. Pediatricians and child-health specialists must inspect the camps, document conditions, and expose abuses behind detention walls.

President Donald Trump announced that he had surpassed Reagan and Lincoln by an extraordinary margin. He omitted the decisive qualification underlying his calculation.

Using a Republican-only poll on August 29, 2026, Trump claimed he was “six times more popular” than previous Republican presidents. The poll placed Trump at 53%, Ronald Reagan at 18%, and Abraham Lincoln at 8%. Trump derived the sixfold claim from Lincoln’s result, while Reagan’s support left Trump below three times Reagan’s total. Trump ranked himself above Lincoln and George Washington. He converted Republican admiration into supposed national popularity and manufactured evidence of political dominance.

During an August 21, 2026, rally for Senator Darline Graham in Myrtle Beach, President Donald Trump asked voters to imagine his name on every congressional ballot. “Pretend, please, that I’m on the ballot,” he instructed voters. “I’m going to be impeached. They’re going to impeach me. They have no idea why.”

“If we lose, you’re going to lose your border, you’re going to lose your tax cuts, you’re going to lose everything that we’ve done,” Trump declared. Trump tied Republican victories to protecting his border policies and tax cuts while shielding himself from impeachment. On August 24, 2026, Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas introduced articles of impeachment for the eighth time.

H.Res. 1486 charges Trump with violating his oath by operating Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection as “vicious, quota-driven, unaccountable paramilitary police forces.” Republican leaders have refused sworn testimony, compulsory documents, and a floor vote. On August 27, 2026, ICE awarded a $16.7 million contract for 6,000 electric-shock gloves intended to control detainees and protesters. Without House action before January 3, 2027, the resolution expires and requires reintroduction.

Voters elect all 435 House members on November 3, 2026. Democrats hold 212 seats and need 218. Midterms commonly punish presidential parties, giving Trump reason to fear voters.

A Democratic House majority gains investigative power on January 3, 2027. Democratic chairs could hold hearings, subpoena records, question officials under oath, and schedule impeachment articles. Trump could invoke executive privilege, order defiance, and litigate subpoenas. Trump’s term ends January 20, 2029, leaving Congress two years to defeat his expected obstruction.

In 2026, voters elect 33 Class II senators and fill seats through special elections. House members can impeach Trump by majority vote, but 67 senators must convict. Democrats cannot reach 67 without Republican support. Representatives need not prove a statutory offense because impeachment addresses abuses of office rather than crimes.

Trump treats voters capable of granting Democrats those powers and ending Republican control as an obstacle. His administration directed the Postal Service to withhold mail ballots from voters whom government records failed to identify. Judge Indira Talwani blocked the rule on August 28, 2026. On May 12, 2026, Trump refused to rule out sending ICE or National Guard personnel to polling places. Dictators who answer declining authority through escalating repression hasten the destruction they seek to escape.

Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, expecting Britain and France to avoid war. Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. Hitler attacked the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. After Germany declared war on the United States, Soviet troops encircled Berlin; Hitler killed himself on April 30, 1945.

Expecting victory, Mussolini entered the Second World War on June 10, 1940. Italy invaded Greece on October 28, 1940, without adequate transportation or supplies. Greek forces drove Italians into Albania, forcing German intervention. King Victor Emmanuel III ordered Mussolini’s arrest after the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943. Partisans captured Mussolini near Lake Como and executed him on April 28, 1945.

Romanian authorities tried to evict dissident pastor László Tőkés from his Timișoara home on December 16, 1989. Security forces fired upon civilians, turning resistance into national revolt. Ceaușescu organized a Bucharest rally on December 21, 1989, expecting obedience. Romanian soldiers rejected repression on December 22, 1989. Troops captured Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu after their helicopter escape; a military firing squad executed both on December 25, 1989.

In 2002, University of South Carolina political psychologist Betty Glad published a comparative analysis of tyrants in Political Psychology. The researcher applied established theories of malignant narcissism to historical leaders without claiming clinical diagnoses. Unchecked command, Glad argued, can weaken reality testing while intensifying grandiose fantasies and paranoid defenses. Glad’s analysis interprets Hitler’s suicide as a final assertion of control after battlefield collapse destroyed his command.

In 2007, leadership scholars Art Padilla, Robert Hogan, and Robert Kaiser published “The Toxic Triangle” in the peer-reviewed journal The Leadership Quarterly. Their model distinguishes fearful conformers from self-interested colluders: fear binds the former; advantage binds the latter. Defeat removed both motives before Italian officials abandoned Mussolini. Trump exploits both motives by rewarding submission and punishing Republican resistance.

After Marjorie Taylor Greene demanded the Epstein files, Trump withdrew his endorsement and branded her a traitor. Greene resigned from Congress on January 5, 2026. On May 6, 2026, Greene alleged Trump blamed her for death threats and said she deserved consequences if someone killed her youngest son. Darline Graham’s August 25, 2026, South Carolina Senate-primary victory demonstrated Trump’s control over Republican careers. Trump endorsed Graham; MAGA Inc. spent $827,711 to defeat Representative Ralph Norman.

Trump’s targets extend beyond Republican dissenters. Reuters found that his attacks frequently preceded surges in threats against judges, prosecutors, and court officials; average hostile communications more than tripled after 2015. Prosecutors charged individuals with threatening U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, New York Judge Arthur Engoron, and Attorney General Letitia James. In 2025, Reuters found that families of at least 11 federal judges faced threats or harassment after rulings against the Trump administration.

An incumbent secure in his command does not ask voters to imagine his name on every congressional ballot or publicly contemplate deploying ICE agents at polling places. Trump does both because a Democratic House would terminate Republican obstruction and compel his administration to surrender evidence. By trying to overpower the electorate, Trump tightens the spiral and hastens the ending he is desperate to survive.

On August 28, 2026, The Washington Post found more than 60 recently removed trees at East Potomac Golf Links, the federally owned public course on Hains Point in Washington. Crews cut down a cherry tree near the Blue Course’s 14th green and two large sycamores near the fourth hole. The Interior Department said arborists removed hazardous, invasive, declining, or dying trees. President Trump had announced a September 1, 2026, construction start although the National Park Service had released neither a final design nor an estimated cost.

Congress reserved this Potomac land for public recreation in 1897. In 2020, the National Park Service competitively awarded National Links Trust a 50-year lease through September 30, 2070, covering East Potomac, Langston, and Rock Creek; NLT planned to restore East Potomac’s Walter Travis design while preserving affordable public golf.

On June 28, 2026, Trump unveiled a redevelopment plan that cuts East Potomac from 36 holes to an 18-hole championship course, expands golf across roughly 50 additional acres of public recreation land, and removes the bicycle trail, miniature-golf course, and oldest cherry-tree grove from the published design. Taxpayers and private donors spent more than $1 million renovating the miniature-golf course in 2024, while National Park Service records identify Hains Point as part of Washington, D.C.’s century-old Japanese cherry-tree landscape.

Japan first sent Washington 2,000 cherry trees in 1909 and replaced that diseased shipment with 3,020 trees in 1912; workers planted many of the replacements across East Potomac Park. Before Trump’s construction removes more of that landscape, National Park Service arborists must compare every felled tree with federal records to establish what his redevelopment has already destroyed and what crews can still restore. Trump’s Interior Department still has not disclosed the project’s total cost, how much private money donors have committed, or whether taxpayers will finance possible Hains Point seawall work.

In October 2025, Trump ordered crews to demolish the White House East Wing for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom. His demolition eliminated the first lady’s offices, White House theater, visitor-entry facilities, and staff workspaces before any replacement existed. Trump raised his estimate from $200 million to about $400 million; contractors later estimated the broader project at nearly $600 million in March 2026.

Trump promised taxpayers would not pay, yet contractors projected that taxpayers would finance more than half the East Wing cost. His administration redirected $352 million in Secret Service funding toward White House security, including about $155 million in ballroom costs. If Congress rejects the design, taxpayers could absorb termination costs and finance whatever replaces the East Wing Trump demolished.

On August 21, Chief Justice John Roberts allowed construction to continue while the Supreme Court considers the National Trust’s challenge to Trump’s demolition and lack of congressional approval. Trump’s Justice Department told the Court that crews had completed 65 percent of construction, although the schedule runs through August 2028. Congress cannot recover the East Wing by cancelling the ballroom because Trump destroyed the structure. Congress must fund Trump’s replacement, authorize another design, or reconstruct the East Wing’s former functions.

Trump’s foundations and underground security construction limit what architects can build, while his active contracts obligate the federal government to additional costs. Elsewhere, Trump replaced the Rose Garden lawn with stone paving and installed privately owned sculptures. Federal preservation teams must reverse Trump’s changes and reconstruct the historic garden.

Authoritarian governments have used comparable physical reconstruction to impose political identity on national capitals. Benito Mussolini, Italy’s Fascist dictator from 1922 to 1943, reconstructed Rome to present Fascism as the successor to the Roman Empire. His government cleared inhabited districts around ancient monuments and displaced thousands. Mussolini ordered the flattening of the Velia hill, while Fascist authorities demolished entire quarters to build the Via dell’Impero, inaugurated in 1932 between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum. Historian Aristotle Kallis documents how Mussolini’s regime used demolition and monumental avenues to overwrite Rome’s existing urban fabric with a Fascist vision.

Trump has repeatedly inserted state performances centered on his presidency into historic federal spaces that traditionally represent the office rather than the occupant. On June 14, 2026, Trump hosted seven UFC fights on the White House South Lawn; on August 23, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix crossed Washington’s monumental core after Trump created the race by executive order. Political psychologists Kathleen McGraw and Thomas Dolan define state personification as citizens increasingly associating the state with the most salient political figure.

After Adolf Hitler became German chancellor in 1933, the Nazi regime made Nuremberg, associated with the medieval Holy Roman Empire, the permanent site of annual Party Rallies. The gatherings lasted up to eight days and drew hundreds of thousands into regimented marches and mass political rituals inside monumental spaces Albert Speer helped design. Geographers Joshua Hagen and Robert Ostergren found that the Nazis fused Nuremberg’s imperial history with new rally grounds to claim historical legitimacy and cast National Socialism as the culmination of German history.

Mary FitzPatrick’s 2019 Journal of Consumer Psychology study, “Possessions and Self in the Identity Work of Survivors of Domestic Violence,” found that survivors use irreplaceable possessions to preserve autobiographical continuity and physical connections to life before abuse. An abuser who deliberately destroys such a possession attacks the victim’s connection to a relationship or period the perpetrator cannot reproduce. By destroying that possession, the abuser controls which traces of the victim’s earlier life survive.

President Trump applies that same destructive principle to Washington when he demolishes historic buildings, displaces inherited landscapes, or replaces commemorative sites: he removes physical evidence of the national past that predates his presidency. Irina Moore found that post-Soviet regimes in Vilnius demolished and replaced monuments to legitimize new political orders and redefine national identity.

Ann Rigney, professor of comparative literature at Utrecht University and a leading scholar of cultural memory, calls this struggle “mnemonic regime change,” in which political actors fight to determine which version of the past occupies permanent public space.

On August 29, the National Park Service endorsed Trump’s proposed 250-foot gilded triumphal arch near Memorial Bridge despite concluding that the monument would significantly damage historic sightlines between Washington’s monuments and Arlington House. If he secures final approval, Trump will impose another presidential monument on federal land and leave Congress to finance any later effort to alter or remove the structure.

Trump is dismantling Washington, D.C.’s physical and cultural inheritance while advancing authoritarian consolidation through mnemonic control and state personification. Americans are only beginning to grasp the scale of the damage. A national reconstruction must reverse that seizure of public history by restoring the heritage Trump displaced and returning Washington’s historic spaces to democratic stewardship.

The scene evokes a political order in which followers surrender independent judgment to a leader who manufactures their reality.

On August 24, 2026, U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon alleged that schools secretly transition children and conduct “radical experiments.” McMahon claimed schools concealed those actions from parents. The Department of Education did not identify any school medically transitioning students or conducting experiments.

In 2010, University of Virginia psychologist Vikram K. Jaswal and colleagues conducted two experiments involving three-year-olds. An adult repeatedly claimed that stickers occupied containers researchers knew were empty. Children discovered each false claim after selecting a container. Still, many children continued trusting the adult’s next claim.

Children trusted the adult even more when they could see and hear her. Jaswal’s team called the result a “specific, highly robust bias to trust testimony.” The children possessed direct physical evidence that contradicted the adult. Yet social communication repeatedly overrode observed reality.

Vanderbilt University psychologists Samuel Ronfard and Jonathan D. Lane later compared children and adults evaluating inaccurate informants. Both groups revised trust according to an informant’s record. However, children and adults interpreted the informant’s character and intentions differently. Their findings confirmed that people must continually evaluate accuracy rather than grant permanent credibility.

Psychologists Yu Tong and Fuxing Wang joined developmental psychologist Judith Danovitch for three meta-analyses. Their research covered 51 studies and 88 experiments involving children ages three through six. Four-year-olds favored knowledgeable informants more strongly than three-year-olds. Children increasingly prioritized demonstrated knowledge when social preference conflicted with factual accuracy.

Political scientists Steven P. Nawara and Mandi Bates Bailey examined Trump’s 2016 primary support among college students. Racial animosity, homophobia, and nativism predicted support for Trump. Those findings identified social prejudices operating alongside judgments about political information.

On January 23, 2016, Trump described the durability of that loyalty in Sioux Center, Iowa:

“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”

One month later, Trump celebrated another characteristic among supporters during his Nevada caucus victory speech:

“We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated.”

Gallup economist Jonathan Rothwell analyzed federal PIAAC assessments collected in 2012, 2014, and 2017. He estimated 54 percent of Americans ages 16–74 read below sixth-grade equivalency, including adults reading far lower. During the year after the 2016 election, Pennycook and Rand tested 15,001 participants and found Trump voters scored lower on cognitive reflection than Clinton or third-party voters.

Washington Post fact-checkers counted 30,573 false or misleading claims during Trump’s first presidential term. Trump averaged six claims daily during 2017 and 39 during 2020. On November 2, 2020, Trump delivered 503 false or misleading claims. The newspaper closed the database when Trump left office on January 20, 2021. Trump used relentless repetition to manipulate followers who struggled to test presidential claims against documented evidence.

The Post’s 30,573-claim count establishes a documented minimum rather than Trump’s lifetime total. Reuters later recorded at least 107 repetitions of Trump’s rigged-election lie. Courts, auditors, state election officials, and Trump’s Justice Department rejected that accusation. Trump continued repeating the election lie after those institutions found insufficient supporting evidence.

On August 30, 2024, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump joined Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice in Washington. At the Joyful Warriors National Summit, Trump alleged schools arranged gender-affirming surgery for children without parental consent. Trump did not identify any school that arranged surgery or any child who received one. He also did not name an involved physician or hospital.

PolitiFact did not find evidence supporting the accusation. Then–Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt supplied parental-notification policies governing transgender students. The policies concerned school treatment and parental notification; none involved medical procedures.

A 2024 JAMA Network Open study examined 2019 insurance claims for 22,827,194 minors. Researchers found 85 gender-affirming surgeries among transgender or gender-diverse minors. Chest procedures accounted for 82 cases, or 96.4 percent. Researchers did not find such surgery among children twelve or younger.

Fox & Friends aired Trump repeating the lie during Lawrence Jones’s October 21 interview at a Bronx barbershop. Four days later, Trump alleged school-arranged transgender operations without parental consent on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

After returning to office, President Trump signed Executive Order 14190 on January 29, 2025. The order, titled “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling,” distinguished school “social transition” from chemical or surgical procedures. The order governed schools’ use of students’ names and pronouns. Yet the order did not identify any school arranging or performing gender-affirming surgery.

Princeton University political scientist Andrew M. Guess and colleagues tested Facebook’s “Tips to Spot False News.” Researchers randomly assigned 4,907 American adults either to receive the instructions or evaluate headlines without guidance. The instructions required recipients to inspect publishers before seeking independent confirmation. Exposure reduced false-headline acceptance from 32 percent to 24 percent.

The intervention improved participants’ ability to distinguish legitimate reporting from fabricated news by 26.5 percent. Several weeks later, researchers still measured improvement, although the gains had weakened. Educators must reinforce source-verification training because a single lesson cannot permanently overcome entrenched information habits.

Trump continued manipulating federal economic statistics during his second administration. During an August 11, 2026, interview with conservative commentator Wayne Allyn Root, Trump told another lie about inflation. “I’m the lowest of the last 10 presidents on inflation,” Trump declared. Trump’s chart compared his first 18 months with previous presidents’ completed terms.

After Trump’s August 11, 2026, inflation boast, FactCheck.org compared equivalent 18-month periods using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The calculation placed Trump fourth-highest among ten presidential terms. Trump instead compared his first 18 months with completed presidencies, producing a false lowest-inflation ranking for political propaganda.

President Donald Trump knowingly repeats lies across virtually every domain of public life. He targets followers who struggle to distinguish repetition from evidence and exploits that difficulty to demand political obedience. The president secures domination by exploiting Americans who struggle to detect the lies he uses to manufacture servile loyalty.

After 34 years of predicting hurricane tracks, NBC6 South Florida meteorologist and hurricane specialist John Morales told viewers he could no longer provide the same confidence after Trump reduced National Weather Service staffing and upper-air observations. Through firings, buyouts, and early-retirement programs, Trump’s administration removed roughly 600 NWS employees and reduced weather-balloon launches as hotter oceans increased danger nationwide.

While the United States operated with fewer veteran forecasters and fewer upper-air measurements, a Himalayan glacier collapsed, drove river levels nine meters higher within thirty minutes, and killed hundreds before they could reach safety.

On August 26, 2026, catastrophic flooding struck northern Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region along the Himalayan border. Flooding began near Lhende River, northeast of Nepal’s Rasuwagadhi border crossing. Floodwater swept ice, rock, and mud downstream, carrying vehicles and structural debris into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

By August 27, 2026, authorities had confirmed fatalities across Nepal and Tibet as rescue operations continued. Authorities reported over 1,300 people missing, hundreds of them foreign tourists and pilgrims. Immediately before flooding, a strong seismic signal initially led investigators to suspect an earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey later determined glacial collapse and debris flow generated the seismic event. Satellite imagery showed a glacier section break away near 5,200 meters and fall 1,200 meters. Descending ice incorporated rock and sediment, accelerating rapidly through the river valley. Debris temporarily blocked the river; failure released floodwater abruptly downstream.

The flood damaged or destroyed at least nineteen bridges and roughly forty kilometers of roadway. Flooding struck hydropower and border installations, destroyed homes and markets, severed communications networks, and disrupted commercial transport routes.

Record ocean temperatures, accelerating polar-ice loss, and lethal European heat establish the global consequences of continued warming. July 2026 effectively tied July 2024 as the second-hottest July ever measured. Global temperatures reached 1.47 degrees Celsius above the preindustrial average. Coal, oil, and gas combustion continues raising greenhouse-gas concentrations that prevent atmospheric heat from escaping into space.

Copernicus recorded the highest July surface temperature across oceans outside the polar regions, averaging 20.96 degrees Celsius. Warmer seas increase atmospheric moisture, intensify extreme rainfall, disrupt marine ecosystems, and supply additional energy to tropical cyclones. The World Meteorological Organization also documented a developing El Niño capable of raising global temperatures through late 2026.

Global sea-ice coverage fell 810,000 square miles below the July average. The deficit produced the fourth-smallest July extent in the 48-year satellite record. Arctic sea ice ranked sixth lowest, while Antarctic sea ice ranked fifth lowest. Melting Greenland and Antarctic land ice raises sea levels, driving coastal flooding, erosion, saltwater intrusion, and permanent displacement.

Copernicus recorded Western Europe’s hottest combined June and July in 2026. France, Spain, England, and Ireland endured exceptional heat as drought depleted soil moisture and river flows.

On February 12, 2026, President Donald Trump and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin repealed the 2009 greenhouse-gas Endangerment Finding. The repeal eliminated federal greenhouse-gas standards for cars and trucks. Trump also withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement, curtailed federal support for wind and solar power, promoted coal production, and accelerated oil and gas development. The World Meteorological Organization calculates a 75 percent probability that average warming during 2026–2030 will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius. Trump therefore bears direct political responsibility for policies that increase preventable deaths, displacement, economic losses, and territorial destruction.

After January 20, 2025, President Trump’s administration expanded fossil-fuel production and deleted the White House climate page. Trump appointees removed climate portals from the Department of Defense and wildfire assessments from the Department of Agriculture. On May 15, 2024, Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1645, erasing “climate change” from state energy law. That June, Florida Department of Education reviewers demanded removal of “caused by human activity” from science textbooks. Publishers complied to secure state approval.

On June 2, 2025, NBC6 South Florida meteorologist and hurricane specialist John Morales interrupted his forecast to warn viewers about damage already reaching federal hurricane forecasting. “I am here to tell you that I am not sure I can do that this year,” he said.

Morales blamed federal cuts, “the gutting,” and a “sledgehammer attack on science.” He reported vacancy rates of roughly 20 to 40 percent at NWS offices from Tampa through Key West, including Miami. Former NWS meteorologists later told CBS that the cuts removed senior scientists who had spent decades studying how regional storms interact with local weather patterns and coastal geography. Their expertise supported accurate predictions of storm surge and other complex severe-weather threats. Veteran meteorologists warned that entry-level recruits cannot immediately replace experienced NWS meteorologists and scientists whose professional judgment developed across decades of severe-weather operations.

On April 17, 2025, NWS warned that “staffing limitations” could reduce or suspend scheduled radiosonde launches. Morales later documented a nearly 20 percent national decline. NWS normally supports twice-daily observations at 100 upper-air sites across the United States, Caribbean, and Pacific Basin.

Radiosondes measure vertical changes in temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind. Numerical models combine those readings with data from aircraft, satellites, radar, surface stations, and ocean buoys. These observations establish the atmospheric conditions meteorologists use to predict severe storms and hurricane tracks. CBS News found that NOAA employed nearly 300 fewer meteorologists and hydrologists in May 2026 than in January 2025. Fewer launches and specialists leave forecast offices with less atmospheric data and fewer veteran meteorologists to interpret conflicting models.

The Nepal-Tibet glacier collapse compressed detection, warning, and evacuation time. Reuters cited scientists who identified accelerated glacier melt, disrupted freeze-thaw cycles, and weakened slopes as climate-related risk factors. Nepal has lost nearly one-third of its mountain ice in three decades.

The United States retains greater forecasting capacity than Nepal. Trump is importing failures the WMO identifies across underfunded systems: missing observations, depleted expertise, and late warnings. Trump is using presidential power to strip Americans of atmospheric evidence and evacuation time.

Americans can use three verified services for conditions anywhere in the United States, but Windy provides the strongest independent notification system. Windy allows users to select an American city and receive alerts when forecast wind, rainfall, temperature, hurricanes, or official warnings meet chosen criteria. Meteoblue MultiModel compares competing forecasts and relays official warnings through push notifications. Zoom Earth provides satellite, radar, and hurricane tracking for continuous visual monitoring.

Republican control converted climate denial into state policy, stripping federal forecasts of critical evidence and expertise while dismantling safeguards designed to limit climate damage. Trump is intensifying climate danger while taking away the warning time Americans need to survive.

At 6:01 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, police received an active-shooting report from 315 White Star Circle. The residence stood outside Billings, Montana, in a subdivision beyond the municipal boundary. Eight members of one family had gathered there for their weekly dinner.

Twelve-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere placed the 911 call and attempted to save her family. Officers arrived while gunfire continued behind the residence. Within minutes, flames had engulfed the house.

Firefighters could not enter until law enforcement secured the property. The subdivision did not require fire hydrants, which further complicated the response. Firefighters continued working until approximately 1 a.m., but the fire destroyed the residence.

Inside, investigators found eight relatives representing four generations of a blended family. The victims were Dana Smith; his wife, Barb Smith; and his 92-year-old mother, Evelyn Smith. Evelyn used a wheelchair and lived in a nearby retirement community. The remaining victims were Dana and Barb’s daughter, Megan Ghekiere, and four children.

Megan’s children were Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7. Her stepchildren were Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12. Megan’s husband, Adam Ghekiere, worked as an airport rescue firefighter in Billings. He heard the active-shooting dispatch while working and repeatedly called his family. After nobody answered, he drove across Billings and found the house burning.

The family normally held dinner on Friday rather than Sunday. Adam therefore believes the killer did not expect Landon and Charlotte to attend. Approximately two hours after reaching the property, Adam learned that his wife and all four children had died.

Relatives identified the killer as Megan’s older brother, Alan Smith, 44. Police found Smith outside the residence with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He later died at a hospital, increasing the total number of deaths to nine.

Relatives said he spent most days alone in his bedroom using his computer. Brad Ireland described him as profoundly isolated and said relatives did not know how he occupied his time online. Relatives said he had struggled for years to obtain or retain employment.

Brad Ireland said Smith could become verbally abusive but had not previously committed known physical violence.

Several weeks before the killings, Dana and Barb required Alan to leave their home. He returned unexpectedly during Sunday dinner and opened fire, according to surviving relatives. Ireland said Smith killed his grandmother, parents, sister, and the four children before setting the residence on fire.

The fire reduced the house to its foundation and created serious structural hazards. Those conditions have delayed evidence recovery and may prevent investigators from reconstructing every action inside the residence.

Charlotte’s final act remains among the clearest established facts. At 12 years old, she recognized the danger, called 911, and attempted to bring help to eight people trapped with an armed relative. Her call allowed officers to reach the property while the attack was still occurring.

Charlotte’s attempt to save her family occurred as family killings claimed a growing share of United States homicides.

From 2020 through 2025, other categories of lethal violence receded more rapidly than family and intimate-partner killings. Family relationships give perpetrators continued access to threatened victims even after escalating conflict demands separation.

Family and intimate-partner homicide has diverged from the broader decline in lethal violence across the United States. These killings constituted 21 percent of all homicides in 2025, compared with 15 percent in 2020. That change represents a 40 percent increase in their share of the national homicide total. Perpetrators within families maintain sustained access to victims, their homes, routines, and vulnerabilities.

Researchers cataloging United States mass killings since 2006 classified approximately 48 percent as family-related crimes. More than one homicide-suicide occurs daily across the United States. Intimate-partner violence constitutes the most common precursor. Many perpetrators kill within an existing relationship before taking their own lives.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth answered men’s documented depression, suicide, and homicide-suicide rates with a federal politics of dominance. Trump converted men’s reduced healthcare use and fourfold suicide rate into a manufactured “war on manhood.” Hegseth elevated testosterone, combat performance, and emotional suppression while excluding mental-health disclosure and domestic-violence prevention from his public program.

“Real men do not cry or discuss their feelings” teaches men to conceal distress rather than seek help. A peer-reviewed study examined 117 men with probable moderate depression. Reluctance to disclose mood symptoms corresponded with 63 percent lower odds of previous mental-health help-seeking. Men constituted 91 percent of perpetrators across 408 homicide-suicide cases, while firearms appeared in 88 percent. Researchers documented previous intimate-partner violence in 70 percent of cases examined across twelve cities.

A 2014 peer-reviewed study by Dennis Reidy and colleagues surveyed 600 heterosexual men. Distress over appearing insufficiently masculine significantly predicted previous intimate-partner violence, independent of other measured masculinity variables. The findings identify threatened masculine status as a measurable violence risk factor rather than a harmless private insecurity.

Hegseth imposed “male-level” physical standards for combat positions and initiated transgender service members’ removal. He conditioned Pentagon support for Scouting America upon eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. On July 15, 2026, Hegseth mandated annual testosterone screening for active-duty and reserve personnel aged thirty and older.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary encouraged drugmakers to seek approval for treating low libido linked to unexplained testosterone deficiency. During an August 17 fundraiser for Representative Zach Nunn, Hegseth celebrated eliminating diversity programs and used a transgender slur. Trump and Hegseth converted male suffering into federal policy rewarding dominance while abandoning emotional disclosure and domestic-violence prevention.

Alan Smith killed eight relatives before shooting himself, placing the Montana massacre within an overwhelmingly male pattern of homicide-suicide. Peer-reviewed research connects concealed depressive symptoms with reduced help-seeking and threatened masculine status with previous intimate-partner violence. Trump invoked male suicide rates to declare a “war on manhood” rather than fund treatment or violence prevention.

President Donald J. Trump read Hitler’s speeches and internalized their governing logic. A man who rarely reads does not keep Hitler’s speeches beside his bed by accident. For decades, he repeated Nazi rhetoric and deployed the same appeals to grievance, dehumanization, and violent coercion. On August 25, 2026, the United Nations and Red Cross demanded binding limits on autonomous killing; Trump’s administration continued opposing binding international restrictions. Trump now flouts every law of humanity that restrains state violence and protects human life.

United Nations leaders have identified a moral red line: autonomous weapon systems selecting and killing humans without direct human authorization. President Trump refuses to bind the United States against crossing that line. His administration maintains presidential control over lethal autonomous weapons while Trump expands extraterritorial killing and threatens territorial conquest. Hitler’s My New Order supplied the same governing logic: manufacture necessity, blame the intended victim, and present aggression as self-defense.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, addressed weapons capable of selecting and engaging targets after activation without further human intervention. After activation, an autonomous weapon can select and engage a target without disclosing the specific target, precise location, or moment of attack to its operator. Guterres and Spoljaric identified autonomous human targeting as a moral red line.

Specific prohibitions form the core of the International Committee of the Red Cross proposal. Countries ratifying the proposed treaty would prohibit systems that produce effects beyond sufficient human understanding, prediction, or explanation. Ratifying countries would also prohibit autonomous systems that directly target human beings by design or operation. All remaining systems would face restrictions governing target types, operational duration, geographical scope, circumstances of use, human supervision, intervention, and deactivation. Those restrictions require human judgment over lethal force.

Since 2014, High Contracting Parties to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons have debated lethal autonomous weapons without adopting specific binding rules. The Group of Governmental Experts formulates proposed elements by consensus, allowing sustained opposition to prevent consensus around binding treaty language. The group reconvenes in Geneva from August 31 through September 4, 2026 before the Seventh Review Conference meets there November 16 through November 20.

Within the Geneva process, the United States, Russia, North Korea, and nine other national governments oppose a legally binding autonomous-weapons agreement. The United States and Russia maintain that existing international humanitarian law provides sufficient protection. The International Committee of the Red Cross disputes that position because existing law leaves essential restrictions unresolved while artificial intelligence is already entering military targeting systems.

Palantir has already connected artificial intelligence to operational military targeting. The Maven Smart System processes Project Maven computer-vision outputs alongside battlefield sensor and intelligence feeds, enabling military personnel to validate potential targets and accelerate targeting decisions. Palantir separately built electromagnetic-spectrum battle-management software for the Defense Information Systems Agency, giving commanders software for planning and coordinating operations across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Palantir also supplies Immigration and Customs Enforcement with technology that converts government records into actionable leads on specific people. ICE’s ELITE application maps potential deportation targets, assembles individual dossiers, and assigns confidence scores to suspected current addresses. Palantir’s integrated targeting and enforcement software gives state agencies the capacity to move rapidly from stored information to enforcement, increasing the risk that a future government could disrupt lawful protest or organized political opposition before either develops effective institutional resistance.

By opposing a treaty, the Trump administration ensures President Trump can weaken Pentagon policy without violating an autonomous-weapons agreement. The refusal consequently leaves autonomous force available for future coercive operations while Trump demands Panama and Greenland and expands lethal operations in Latin America. Trump grounds territorial acquisition and extraterritorial killing in national recovery and compelled self-defense, rationales Adolf Hitler used to disguise chosen aggression as necessity.

A 1990 Vanity Fair report recorded Ivana Trump’s statement that then-businessman Donald J. Trump read My New Order, Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s collected speeches. She said Trump kept the volume in a cabinet near his bed. Trump denied reading the speeches. His friend Marty Davis confirmed giving Trump My New Order, rather than Mein Kampf.

Austria’s annexation appeared in Adolf Hitler’s speeches as recovery rather than conquest. Hitler called Austria the German people’s “oldest Eastern march.” He described his mission as leading his homeland “back to the Reich.” German troops entered Austria in March 1938.

During his January 20, 2025 inaugural address, President Donald J. Trump applied the same historical-recovery argument to Panama. Trump called the canal transfer a “foolish gift.” He accused Panama of violating the agreement before declaring, “We gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.”

Trump’s January 20, 2025 border proclamation used crimes against United States citizens to justify extraordinary military powers. The proclamation declared United States sovereignty “under attack.” Trump cited crimes committed by undocumented migrants before directing military assistance at the border.

Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, while Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler falsely portrayed Germany as confronting a Soviet threat. Hitler cast German aggression as necessary protection against a supposed conspiracy threatening Germany. He described German military operations as the “safeguarding of Europe.”

Trump applied the same national-security justification to Greenland on January 7, 2025. He said the United States needed Greenland “for national security.” Asked whether he would exclude military or economic coercion to obtain the Danish territory, Trump refused.

At the July 7, 2026 NATO summit, Trump escalated that position. He declared that Greenland “should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark.” Trump justified United States control by citing Russian and Chinese activity around Greenland. Greenland’s government rejected Trump’s demand, while Denmark reaffirmed the territorial sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Hitler repeatedly assigned responsibility for Germany’s chosen military action to the government he threatened. Surrender would produce peace; refusal would make German action Czechoslovakia’s responsibility. Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Hitler then falsely told the Reichstag that Poland had initiated hostilities and Germany was merely “returning the fire.” He declared, “Since 5:45 A.M. we have been returning the fire.”

On April 23, 2026, Trump reproduced that retaliatory formulation:

“I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be ... putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump applies the same logic to lethal operations against drug-trafficking organizations. A December 2025 Executive Office of the President statement classified cartel activity as an “armed attack against the United States and allies.” The Executive Office of the President then declared that the United States “must use force in self-defense.”

An official March 31, 2026 Department of War report confirmed that Trump ordered military strikes against designated drug-trafficking organizations. Trump’s May 2026 Counterterrorism Strategy expanded the doctrine further. Trump wrote that he had begun using the United States military to “stop and destroy” their operations.

The May 2026 strategy states Trump’s threat directly: “We Will Find You and We Will Kill You.” The military campaign continued through August. On August 24, 2026, United States forces struck another vessel in the eastern Pacific and killed two people. The Associated Press reported that the campaign had reached 67 strikes and 223 deaths since September 2025.

On April 7, 2026, Trump extended the same forced-response construction to Iran:

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

Adolf Hitler delivered the corresponding threat before the Reichstag on January 30, 1939:

“If the international Finance-Jewry inside and outside of Europe should succeed in plunging the peoples of the earth once again into a world war, the result will be ... the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe.”

The November 3, 2026 midterms will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress. Democratic victories in both chambers would transfer committee leadership and floor control on January 3, 2027. Democratic majorities could prohibit Pentagon spending on autonomous weapons and require direct human authorization before lethal targeting. President Trump could veto the legislation, requiring two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override the presidential veto. Democratic control would end Republican command of the legislative process, but only a veto-proof statute would eliminate Trump’s unilateral authority over autonomous-weapons policy.

European Union member states can disrupt the weapons supply chain by closing defense markets to systems lacking direct human authorization. Without NATO bases and intelligence, Trump would face greater operational barriers to strikes that delegate human-target selection to software. If his delegation still blocks consensus in Geneva, a United Nations General Assembly majority can move treaty negotiations outside that forum and prohibit systems designed to mark humans for elimination.

President Trump publicly tied a century of Republican control to enactment of the SAVE America Act. He demanded that Senate Republicans abolish the filibuster and impose new identification and citizenship-document requirements. Those barriers would prevent eligible citizens without matching documents from registering or voting. President Trump then promised that the new voting barriers would shield Republicans from electoral defeat for a century:

“But if we terminate the filibuster, as we should do, and immediately vote for the SAVE America Act, then we will not lose an election for a hundred years.”—President Donald Trump, July 3, 2026

On August 10, 2026, Real America’s Voice host Wayne Allyn Root urged Trump to declare a “national security emergency for elections” if the Senate failed to enact the SAVE America Act. Root proposed using emergency power to impose photo identification, citizenship-proof requirements, and mail-ballot restrictions without Senate approval. Trump did not reject the proposal. He replied, “Let me just say that stranger things have happened, OK? I’ll leave it at that.”

Root’s proposal would place election rules under unilateral presidential control, rather than formally cancel the November election. The Constitution gives states primary authority over election administration, and gives Congress power to regulate federal elections. A president cannot independently rewrite those rules merely by declaring a national emergency. Trump, nevertheless, left open the possibility of using emergency authority to bypass the Senate and alter election procedures.

President Trump cannot cancel the midterms, nor can he force every congressional contest into a single House vote. Under the Twelfth Amendment, the House chooses a president only when no candidate wins an Electoral College majority. Under Article I, each chamber judges disputes concerning individual seats. Republicans could manufacture certification conflicts, but federal law provides no mechanism for converting the 2026 midterms into a nationwide delegation vote.

President Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election, and his supporters attacked Congress on January 6, 2021. Attorney General Merrick Garland waited nearly twenty-two months before appointing Special Counsel Jack Smith on November 18, 2022. Garland protected the Justice Department from allegations of partisanship while Trump escaped timely prosecution. Smith indicted Trump on August 1, 2023. Trump pursued immunity claims until litigation pushed the trial beyond the 2024 election.

After Trump regained the presidency, federal prosecutors dismissed the charges. Brazil imposed the accountability that United States officials abandoned. Brazilian prosecutors charged Jair Bolsonaro after his attempted coup. The Supreme Federal Court convicted Bolsonaro and sentenced him to 27 years and three months. United States officials delayed prosecution until Trump recovered the presidential authority that destroyed the case.

In July 2026, Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson disclosed Justice Department records showing that Jack Smith’s prosecutors reviewed messages involving 44 lawmakers, 40 of them Republicans. The National Archives gave prosecutors exchanges between those lawmakers and President Trump’s officials from October 2020 through January 2021. Prosecutors examined that Republican communication network while reconstructing President Trump’s criminal effort to overturn the 2020 election.

Christopher Armitage’s August 2026 report for The Existentialist Republic identifies a structural danger larger than any single disinformation campaign: foreign influence capacity is expanding while the federal institutions designed to detect and expose election interference are systemically being removed.

Russia-linked CopyCop, also tracked as Storm-1516, substantially expanded its information infrastructure during this election cycle. Recorded Future identified at least 200 new websites since January 2025, many impersonating American local news outlets, political organizations, or fact-checking operations. Researchers link the network to Russian strategic objectives and GRU-supported infrastructure.

Federal election defenses simultaneously weakened. Attorney General Pamela Bondi’s February 5, 2025 memorandum disbanded the FBI Foreign Influence Task Force and narrowed criminal FARA enforcement. The Federal Election Commission has lacked its statutory four-member quorum since May 1, 2025, restricting major enforcement actions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio closed the State Department’s counter-foreign-information office on April 16, 2025. President Trump then removed the remaining Election Assistance Commission leadership on July 9, 2026.

On August 17, 2026, The Washington Post reported that the Justice Department planned to deploy roughly 1,000 federal election monitors for the November midterms. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon described the planned deployment as probably historic for a Republican administration. During the 2026 primaries, the Justice Department had already sent more than 75 monitors across five states and more than 200 polling locations.

On May 12, Trump refused to rule out sending National Guard troops or ICE agents to polling places. He promised to do “anything necessary” to secure what he called honest elections. Federal law restricts precisely such coercive deployments. 18 U.S.C. § 592 restricts stationing troops or armed federal personnel at election sites. Sections 593–594 prohibit military interference with election officials and voter intimidation.

ICE separately plans to spend up to $20 million purchasing thousands of CTG-5 G.L.O.V.E. devices. These wearable weapons deliver painful electric shocks through direct contact with bare skin. The manufacturer prohibits punitive shocks, responses to verbal defiance, and use against medically vulnerable people. Trump threatened to deploy ICE at polling places while his administration moved to arm agents with concealed instruments of electric coercion.

Sanctioned Russian Duma members visited Washington in March 2026. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Roger Wicker warned that the delegation presented counterintelligence risks and could gather intelligence useful to the Kremlin.

FBI Director Kash Patel is planning a mid-October trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg, the first by a sitting FBI director since 2013. A U.S. official identified Russia’s Federal Security Service as the expected host, while the agenda remains undisclosed. Months earlier, the administration dismantled the FBI Foreign Influence Task Force created to combat operations such as Russia’s election interference. The federal government dismantled the bureau’s Russia-focused election defense, then prepared to send the FBI director to Russia weeks before Americans vote.

Dismantling federal election defenses while expanding Kremlin access moves this scandal into the territory of treason.

Article III, Section 3 defines treason as levying war against the United States or aiding the nation’s enemies. Prosecutors must prove an overt act through two witnesses or a confession in open court. An official commits treason by knowingly giving an enemy aid or comfort. Congress and the Justice Department must investigate officials who dismantled election defenses while opening government channels to Kremlin actors. Evidence establishing intentional assistance should trigger prosecution under the Constitution’s gravest criminal prohibition. Officials cannot disguise aid to a hostile foreign power as legitimate governance.

A 2026 PNAS study estimated that exposure to targeted voter-suppression advertising during the 2016 election reduced turnout by 1.86 percentage points—approximately 4.7 million voters.

Foreign influence operations expand as the federal government dismantles detection and enforcement capacity. His proposed “soft secession” calls on states to build stronger election defenses when federal safeguards collapse. Foreign influence networks already operate; federal officials have destroyed several critical guardrails. Republican attacks on election protections reveal the party’s greatest fear: voters removing

Republicans from office and exposing their campaign to subvert elections and entrench authoritarian rule. The administration’s destruction of election defenses and widening Kremlin access now provide a far stronger factual predicate for a federal counterintelligence and criminal investigation than the January 6, 2021, coup attempt.

At the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s June 26 conference, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that a Democratic House would investigate Trump’s family and political network. Johnson then cast Republican control of Congress as protection from congressional scrutiny:

On June 26, 2026, Senator Adam Schiff and twenty Democratic colleagues demanded federal agencies preserve election records. House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin pledged to investigate the administration’s $1.8 billion payout fund if Democrats regain the House. By calling Republican control a “protection program,” House Speaker Mike Johnson admitted that his majority shields President Trump and his allies from congressional subpoenas.

Viktor Orbán spent sixteen years converting state power, media dominance, and election law into permanent Fidesz control. Record turnout shattered that design. Tisza won 53.18 percent and captured 141 parliamentary seats. Hungarian voters removed Orbán and gave his opponents constitutional power to dismantle Fidesz entrenchment. Massive Democratic turnout would empower House Judiciary and Oversight chairs to subpoena White House directives and Justice Department communications for public hearings and criminal referrals.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi, The Drawbridge, from Carceri d’invenzione (Imaginary Prisons), ca. 1749–1761. Piranesi constructed an impossible prison world whose endless stairways, obstructed passages, and colossal machinery transform confinement into a system without intelligible boundaries or escape.

The Trump administration has opened a legal pathway from United States citizenship into its rapidly expanding detention system. By August 3, 2026, DOJ had filed 123 civil denaturalization complaints since Trump returned to office. Successful cases revoke naturalized citizenship and may expose former citizens to immigration detention and removal.

On April 14, 2025, Trump told Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, “Homegrowns are next,” and demanded approximately five additional prisons. Trump directed then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to determine how his administration could legally imprison United States citizens abroad. On April 25, Trump again said he “would love” to proceed if legally permitted. A Supreme Court decision has weakened procedural barriers to Trump’s ability to imprison ordinary United States citizens.

Federal agents arrested United States Army veteran George Retes during a July 10, 2025 immigration raid in Camarillo, California. Agents exposed Retes to tear gas, restrained him, damaged his vehicle, and jailed him without explanation. Federal authorities released Retes three days later without charges.

The South Texas Family Residential Center at Dilley reopened for family detention in March 2025. The Biden administration had phased out family detention in 2021, and Dilley closed in August 2024. The Flores settlement generally limits detention of immigrant children to approximately 20 days, a requirement contested in ongoing litigation.

Detained families and attorneys reported mold- and worm-contaminated food, inadequate medical care, and around-the-clock lighting. By August 2026, federal data showed at least 60 children had been held at Dilley for 100 days or longer. During its first year after reopening, Dilley held approximately 3,000 children; more than half remained beyond 20 days.

One detained child, identified in court filings as S.M.H., was a 16-year-old Los Angeles high-school student who had lived in the United States since age five. By August 2026, federal immigration authorities had held him and his mother at Dilley for 123 days. His sworn declaration reported a ten-pound weight loss and rooms infested with cockroaches, spiders, and mosquitoes.

Parents and lawyers documented the medical consequences for children at Dilley in federal court filings. A ten-year-old with Hirschsprung’s disease went more than a month without a bowel movement after inadequate medical care and diet. An eighteen-month-old required ten days of hospitalization after pneumonia, RSV, COVID-19, and respiratory distress developed following weeks of inadequate treatment.

Staff left a two-year-old’s infected gum untreated for more than 23 days. Fever and infection followed, accompanied by relentless crying and reliance on a liquid diet. At Adelanto, California Department of Justice investigators documented murky drinking water and inadequate medical treatment. California investigators also documented pepper spray, deficient food and clothing, deficient sanitation, and restricted phone access.

Sworn declarations reported detainees purchasing bottled water through commissary when available water was dirty or insufficient. A federal court ordered officials to provide clean water and adequate food. The court also required sanitation, medical care, clothing, bedding, and outdoor recreation. Four men died at Adelanto between September 2025 and March 2026; all four had received or sought medical services there.

At Delaney Hall in Newark, Salvadoran detainee Edwin Lopez-Cornejo died after a medical emergency in August 2026. His family said he had hypertension, diabetes, and epilepsy requiring medication. The day before his death, he told his mother he had lost feeling in half his face and one arm.

Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights documented 52 deaths in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody during Trump’s first 500 days. From January 2025 through January 2026, the agency’s detention population rose approximately 77 percent. The annualized custodial mortality rate rose approximately 140 percent. The organizations’ analysis placed the trend-level custodial death rate at its highest level in nearly two decades.

From January 2024 through February 2026, Immigration and Customs Enforcement recorded at least 1,460 incidents involving pepper spray, takedowns, and restraint devices. Force rose under Trump’s second administration against detainees seeking food, water, medical treatment, or protesting facility conditions.

Camp East Montana opened at U.S. Army Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, in August 2025. By April 2026, the agency’s largest detention facility had approximately 5,000-person capacity. Under Trump’s January 2025 executive order expanding detention, the U.S. Army awarded and administered a $1.3 billion contract. Army and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials told GAO that senior leadership’s expedited deadlines dictated acquisition decisions. Trump Administration Officials selected a contractor lacking detention-services experience. Immigration and Customs Enforcement opened Camp East Montana without required pre-occupancy inspection or verification of detention-standard compliance.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement later found untreated chronic illnesses, including diabetes and HIV cases without treatment plans. GAO documented medical-service gaps, unsanitary conditions, and the loss of a loaded firearm. A medical examiner classified a January 2026 detainee death as homicide by asphyxia.

Camp East Montana’s contractor failed to provide required use-of-force records. Investigators reviewing the January 2026 detainee homicide found related evidence missing or destroyed. Another detainee died by suicide after staff failed required monitoring and suicide-resistant placement. Detainees reported beatings, sexual abuse, and harassment.

Detainees also reported unsanitary confinement, spoiled or otherwise inedible food, denied medical treatment, and barriers to counsel and family contact. Sixty-four of 71 Human Rights Watch and ACLU interviewees, approximately 90 percent, experienced or witnessed physical abuse by staff. DHS and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement component sought court orders for involuntary medical procedures against at least ten detained hunger strikers. Federal officials force-fed at least three through nasogastric tubes; many detainees facing the involuntary-procedure proceedings lacked counsel. Federal officials exercised complete custodial control over every person subjected to the involuntary medical procedures.

Nazi authorities carried out mass extermination and deportation while also subjecting captive populations to internment, starvation, medical deprivation, and systematic abuse. In Geneva on August 12, 1949, states adopted four revised Geneva Conventions. The new Fourth Convention established protections specifically devoted to civilians. The Geneva Conventions strengthened legal restraints protecting civilians after the Second World War exposed catastrophic deficiencies in existing protections.

DHS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials decide whether immigration detainees remain confined and receive medical treatment and control access to adequate food and clean water. They additionally control recreation and communication and determine whether detainees reach lawyers and families or secure administrative review and release. Captured targets of the Trump administration’s quotas, detained at Dilley, Adelanto, Delaney Hall, and Camp East Montana, cannot escape dangerous conditions.

President Trump directed federal detention and removal policy through executive orders that expanded detention capacity. Immigration and Customs Enforcement leadership controlled detention operations and medical standards. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth controlled the Defense Department while the Army administered the Camp East Montana contract.

Federal orders enforcing the Flores settlement at Dilley provided legal notice to DHS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement leadership. The Adelanto orders in L.T. v. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement separately provided legal notice to the same federal leadership. Inspection reports and medical findings provided additional notice. Sworn declarations and investigative reports reinforced the documented record. Documented deaths further notified DHS, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Defense Department leadership of conditions producing injury.

Civil immigration detention is not criminal punishment, and governmental custody cannot lawfully become punitive. Counsel barriers prevent detainees from challenging confinement or pursuing asylum or Convention Against Torture protection. Such barriers prevent evidence preservation and judicial review.

The International Committee of the Red Cross holds a Geneva Conventions mandate to promote compliance with international humanitarian law. The organization presses governments to strengthen enforcement. On August 12, 2026, ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric warned that governmental commitment to the Conventions was eroding.

During international armed conflict, national governments party to the Fourth Geneva Convention carry criminal-enforcement duties concerning grave breaches against protected persons or property. Article 146 requires governments to enact criminal penalties and search for persons alleged to have committed or ordered grave breaches. Governments must prosecute alleged offenders or hand them over for trial. Article 147 includes unlawful confinement, deportation or transfer, torture, inhuman treatment, and willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health.

United Nations officials separately took formal action challenging Trump administration immigration practices. An April 23, 2025 urgent appeal challenged Alien Enemies Act deportations, arbitrary detention, deficient due process, and non-refoulement violations. UN mandate holders challenged enforced disappearance and inhumane detention conditions.

By the first weekend of August 2026, US federal immigration authorities held approximately 68,000 immigrants in detention nationwide. Federal regulations implementing the Convention Against Torture prohibit removal where a person would more likely than not face torture. Under 8 C.F.R. §§ 208.16–208.17, qualifying applicants receive withholding or deferral upon satisfying the more-likely-than-not torture standard. Cabinet officials receiving credible evidence of a substantial torture risk remain legally obligated to enforce federal prohibitions against removal to torture.

As of August 23, 2026, New York barred state and local facilities from holding people for federal immigration authorities and required existing agreements terminated. Pennsylvania’s environmental orders forced withdrawal of two proposed facilities totaling 9,000 beds. Maryland’s preliminary injunction continued blocking construction and operation of the Williamsport facility. New Jersey continued litigating against the proposed Roxbury center while investigating Delaney Hall.

Massachusetts maintained restrictions protecting state facilities from civil immigration arrests and staging. Washington secured judicial authority for health inspections at Tacoma’s private detention center. California’s June lawsuit seeking to block the proposed Gilroy facility remained pending. These measures constrain state cooperation, facility construction, or detention conditions; they cannot categorically prevent federal arrests.

Deportation officers assigned to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations directorate can seize targeted residents and transfer them across state lines. The directorate controls detention placement, while Immigration and Customs Enforcement Air Operations conducts transfer flights. State contract bans close local cells but leave Trump’s national arrest-and-detention apparatus operational.

During Hitler’s first eleven months in power, historians estimate that Nazi authorities subjected approximately 150,000 to 200,000 people to temporary detention without trial. By the end of July 1933, nearly 27,000 people, virtually all political prisoners, were incarcerated simultaneously in Nazi concentration camps. By October 1934, mass releases had reduced the concentration-camp population to approximately 2,400 prisoners while the SS consolidated control over the camp system.

Federal immigration detention reached approximately 73,000 people on January 15, 2026, the highest point recorded during Trump’s second administration to that date. Trump border czar Tom Homan publicly set a goal of at least 100,000 detention beds. Congress appropriated $45 billion for adult and family detention capacity through fiscal year 2029. During Senate debate, the late Senator Lindsey Graham stated that the legislation would expand detention capacity from 40,000 to 125,000 beds. The agency’s current construction and acquisition program separately projects 92,600 operational beds by November 2026, including eight large detention facilities, 16 regional facilities, and ten additional turnkey facilities.

The August 2026 federal immigration-detention population already exceeded the July 1933 Nazi concentration-camp population by more than two and a half times. The January 15, 2026 peak approached 2.7 times that population. A 125,000-bed detention system would permit simultaneous confinement of approximately 4.6 times the nearly 27,000 people incarcerated in Nazi concentration camps six months after Hitler became chancellor.

President Donald Trump and his Cabinet are expanding a national confinement system increasingly marked by deaths, force-feeding, and severe medical neglect. Citizens must sound the alarm until every person associated is held to account. Incremental escalation and secrecy enabled Hitler’s regime to murder approximately twelve million targeted people before military defeat ended the extermination.

The $3.8 billion annual U.S. commitment to Israel is a baseline. Under the 2016 memorandum covering fiscal years 2019–2028, Washington provides $3.3 billion in Foreign Military Financing and $500 million for missile defense. Congress repeatedly adds Israel-specific programs and, during war, supplemental appropriations. In fiscal 2024, military and missile-defense obligations reached $12.5 billion, including extraordinary wartime funding.

AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, lobbies Washington to secure U.S. political, military, and diplomatic support for Israel. AIPAC’s predecessor, the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs, emerged after Israel’s October 1953 Qibya attack triggered a U.S.–Israel crisis, beginning operations in 1954 under Isaiah L. Kenen. Kenen had worked for Israel’s Office of Information and the American Zionist Council.

Renamed AIPAC in 1959, the organization built a political network connecting donors and activists directly to congressional power. AIPAC cultivated presidents and congressional leaders while establishing influence among committee chairs, candidates, donors, and policy officials. AIPAC helps elect candidates committed to AIPAC’s Israel policy and finances campaigns against lawmakers who dissent.

Those officials, therefore, confront electoral consequences when considering appropriations and policies transferring American resources to Israel. Elections create political leverage; AIPAC converts that leverage, through lobbying, into legislation, appropriations, and continuing U.S. support for Israel.

For fiscal 2026, Congress approved more than $4 billion for Israeli security assistance, missile defense, anti-tunneling programs, and counter-drone systems. AIPAC actively lobbies for these appropriations and worked with pro-Israel congressional leaders to secure the 2026 package. AIPAC’s electoral operation therefore protects the congressional coalition repeatedly directing billions in American resources toward Israel.

Outside direct military assistance, fiscal 2026 appropriations included $6.5 million for refugee resettlement in Israel, $5 million for cultural initiatives, and $3 million for U.S.-Israel international development cooperation. Congress also maintains federal loan guarantees for Israel through fiscal 2030; CRS reported approximately $3.814 billion in unused guarantee authority remained available in 2025. Separate federal programs have supported U.S.-Israeli agricultural, energy, health, scientific, and technological cooperation. These benefits extend the American financial commitment beyond weapons purchases and missile defense.

Spain guarantees universal core healthcare while spending about $5,346 per person annually. At that level, $175 billion represents roughly one year of healthcare for 32.7 million people. The United States instead transferred that cumulative sum to Israel across decades of economic, military, and missile-defense assistance. That comparison measures the enormous domestic value represented by those federal resources.

Israel’s high-income OECD status distinguishes the country from impoverished states dependent on American assistance for basic public services. In 2024, Israeli GDP reached $540.3 billion, with $54,177 per person versus $84,534 in the United States. Israel guarantees universal healthcare through four nonprofit health funds under the National Health Insurance Law. Government policy also provides free compulsory preschool from age three and a national system of income protection.

The country’s national social-insurance system provides substantial protections across retirement, childbirth, and unemployment. Old-age pension eligibility begins at 67 for men and between 62 and 65 for women, depending on birth year and applicable eligibility rules. Employees who complete twelve months with the same employer receive 26 weeks of childbirth and parenthood leave.

Qualifying National Insurance contributors can receive maternity allowance for 15 weeks. Since January 2022, Israeli women aged 57 through 67 with birth dates on or after January 1, 1960, can receive up to 300 unemployment days across eighteen months. These programs demonstrate the breadth of social protections Israel maintains while the United States continues providing substantial assistance to the high-income country.

Direct electoral involvement began when AIPAC PAC registered with the FEC on Dec. 15, 2021. UDP registered as a super PAC on Jan. 3, 2022. AIPAC PAC makes direct candidate contributions within federal limits; UDP raises and spends unlimited sums on independent expenditures. Combined with Washington lobbying, those campaign operations can influence officials and help determine who remains in office.

Through campaign support, AIPAC PAC and UDP reward legislators aligned with AIPAC’s foreign-policy agenda and finance efforts against dissenters. That electoral pressure forces lawmakers to weigh the potential cost of future congressional decisions. Multimillion-dollar election campaigns publicly demonstrate the consequences of dissent without requiring explicit instructions.

As of August 22, 2026, FEC-derived records rank Susan Collins first among AIPAC PAC’s 2026 candidate-committee recipients. Collins’s Senate committee received approximately $1.38 million through AIPAC PAC. By comparison, U.S. Representative Wesley Bell represents Missouri’s First Congressional District. Bell’s committee received approximately $1.03 million through AIPAC PAC, placing him second. U.S. Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas ranked third, with approximately $990,000 through his Senate committee. Collectively, AIPAC PAC concentrated more than $3.4 million through these three federal campaigns alone.

By June 30, 2026, AIPAC PAC had raised $47.52 million during the 2025–2026 election cycle and spent $46.33 million. United Democracy Project took in $103.99 million, disbursed $52.54 million, and devoted $27.93 million to independent expenditures. UDP still held more than $80 million in cash. AIPAC and affiliated groups then poured roughly $30 million into a single Michigan Senate primary. AIPAC uses that financial power to reward allies, bury opponents under massive spending, punish congressional dissent, and exert sustained pressure over federal policy.

AIPAC PAC, United Democracy Project, and committees financed by UDP can enter a race because of a candidate’s position on Israel. Those committees can then attack the candidate over unrelated subjects. AIPAC-linked spending followed that approach in multiple congressional contests.

The disputes concern Gaza, military assistance, Israeli government policy, or congressional conditions on American aid. Those committees use advertisements to attack candidates over crime, immigration, infrastructure, taxes, or another issue more effective with local voters. They send millions in opposition messaging to voters without revealing why the committee entered the race.

During the 2026 Illinois primaries, Affordable Chicago Now (ACN), Chicago Progressive Partnership, and Elect Chicago Women (ECW) received or spent UDP money, becoming central vehicles for those expenditures. Their names gave voters no indication that pro-Israel financing funded part of their spending. A March 2026 FEC filing records UDP’s contribution to ACN and identifies UDP by federal committee number.

The New York Times calculated over $21 million in AIPAC-connected Illinois congressional contests. ECW spent nearly $6 million in the Ninth District and $4 million in the Eighth. ACN spent over $4 million in the Second; UDP about $5 million in the Seventh. Federal records show ECW raised $11.19 million January 27–June 30, 2026, and spent $10.83 million.

Afterward, The Washington Post reported filing schedules left important funding relationships unclear before Election Day. UDP acknowledged supporting several committees.

How AIPAC Could Be Legally Dissolved

Judicial dissolution can terminate AIPAC’s corporate existence. Because AIPAC is incorporated in D.C., D.C. Code § 29-412.20 allows the D.C. Attorney General to petition D.C. Superior Court. Repeatedly exceeding or abusing lawful authority, or continuing to act contrary to nonprofit purposes, can justify dissolution rather than financial penalties.

Federal courts can separately impose permanent injunctions against prohibited activity. Under 22 U.S.C. § 618(f), DOJ may seek an order enjoining FARA violations or preventing continued unlawful activity as a foreign agent. Judicial dissolution would terminate AIPAC as a corporation; a permanent injunction could prohibit specified operations from continuing.

AIPAC is a political organization; Jewish Americans do not share responsibility for actions taken by the Israeli government. Any effort to curtail AIPAC’s political power must also protect Jewish Americans against antisemitic discrimination, intimidation, and violence.

The United States must protect Jewish Americans from collective blame for AIPAC or Israeli government policy. The US must extend that protection to Palestinian and Muslim Americans, immigrants, Black and LGBTQ+ Americans. The United States must enforce equal protection regardless of ancestry, religion, race, immigration status, or sexual orientation.

Responsibility belongs to organizations and officials whose conduct warrants scrutiny, not ethnic or religious populations. Ending AIPAC’s political power cannot become collective punishment of Jewish Americans; otherwise, the United States would replace institutional coercion with collective persecution.

Adolf Hitler killed himself in his Berlin bunker on April 30, 1945, as Soviet forces closed on the German capital. Less than five months later, Fred and Mary Trump likely conceived Donald Trump. Born June 14, 1946, Trump entered the world while Allied prosecutors established the evidentiary record of Nazi war crimes at Nuremberg. Decades later, Trump read Hitler’s collected speeches and repeatedly invoked Nazi Germany when describing political power and loyalty.

On June 18, 2026, Trump publicly endorsed a document comparing his power with Adolf Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Napoleon, Genghis Khan, and Attila the Hun. Trump posted the comparison on Truth Social and wrote, “Presidential Historian Dave King — Sounds good to me!”

During an interview with Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, Trump showed them the document containing the comparison. Swan later said Trump read the dictators’ names aloud, focused on their use of fear, and showed no objection to the comparison. In September 1990, Vanity Fair reported that Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that Trump periodically read My New Order, a collection of Hitler’s speeches, and kept the volume in a cabinet beside his bed. When Marie Brenner questioned Trump, he said his friend Marty Davis had given him Mein Kampf. Davis independently confirmed giving Trump a Hitler book but identified the volume as My New Order.

Published in 1941, the edition contains 1,008 pages of Hitler’s speeches and editorial commentary. Trump possessed an extensive collection of Hitler’s political speeches decades before entering national politics, and Ivana Trump said he read the collection periodically.

Around age five, Donald Trump was already the subject of an account of deliberate aggression toward a much younger child. Martha Burnham’s baby Dennis was in a backyard playpen when she heard him screaming and ran outside. She found Dennis being pelted with rocks thrown by five-year-old Donald Trump from the fence separating their homes. Haberman reports that Martha Burnham then dragged Trump home by the collar and told his mother what had happened.

Developmental psychologist Rebecca Waller studied 731 children and found callous-unemotional behavior between ages two and four. Those early traits predicted later aggression and rule-breaking. By age three, the pattern independently predicted antisocial behavior observed six years later. Severe deficits in empathy, guilt, and remorse can become measurable long before adolescence.

Following Kew-Forest School, a private school in Forest Hills, Queens, Trump entered New York Military Academy at thirteen in 1959 and graduated in 1964.

Cadets at the private military boarding school in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, studied required military history and trained with rifles and mortars under discipline modeled partly on nearby West Point. Army Colonel Theodore Dobias, a World War II veteran and NYMA training officer, became Trump’s mentor. Trump entered that curriculum only fourteen years after Nazi Germany surrendered.

Former roommate Ted Levine said a dispute at New York Military Academy over an unmade bed became physical after Levine struck Trump with a broomstick. Levine said Trump then seized him and tried to force him through a second-floor window. Two other cadets intervened and stopped Trump before he could push Levine out.

At twenty-seven, Trump formed a relationship with Roy Cohn, Joseph McCarthy’s former chief counsel during McCarthy’s anti-Communist Senate investigations; Cohn became Trump’s lawyer, close friend, adviser, and mentor for more than a decade. Reporters who examined their relationship found that Cohn taught Trump a governing method built around attack, counterattack, intimidation, exploitation of power, and refusal to apologize; Trump prized Cohn’s aggression, relied upon him repeatedly, and remained his friend even after New York disbarred Cohn for ethical misconduct.

Trump and Jeffrey Epstein maintained a close social relationship for years in New York and Palm Beach. In 2002, Trump said he had known Epstein for fifteen years and called him a “terrific guy.” He added that Epstein liked “beautiful women” and that “many of them are on the younger side.” Archival footage also shows Trump and Epstein together at Mar-a-Lago in 1992.

A 2020 FBI tip later released by the Justice Department contained an unverified allegation involving Trump and extraordinary brutality. An unnamed woman told federal investigators that Epstein trafficked her at thirteen and that she became pregnant during the abuse. She alleged her uncle murdered the newborn and dumped the body into Lake Michigan while Trump witnessed the killing. The Justice Department subsequently released that accusation as part of the federal Epstein record.

Hitler did not develop his political methods in isolation. Georg von Schönerer supplied racial nationalism, Karl Lueger demonstrated antisemitism’s electoral power, and Mussolini demonstrated how fascists could seize state authority. Mussolini’s October 1922 March on Rome then directly inspired Hitler’s November 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.

Germany convicted Hitler of high treason, sentencing him to five years at Landsberg. Authorities released the Nazi leader after eight months, allowing him to reorganize his movement. In January 1933, conservative elites persuaded President Paul von Hindenburg to appoint Hitler chancellor, believing they could control Hitler. Within months, the new chancellor dismantled constitutional restraints and used coercion to eliminate political opposition.

Political scientist Stephen G. F. Hall wrote The Authoritarian International. The subtitle is Tracing How Authoritarian Regimes Learn in the Post-Soviet Space. Hall examines how autocrats study earlier dictatorships and contemporary authoritarian regimes. Hall identifies emulation as a mechanism through which authoritarian rulers adopt tactics used by other regimes.

Over decades, Trump repeatedly associated with people who praised Hitler, denied the Holocaust, or promoted white supremacy. On November 22, 2022, Trump hosted Ye and Nick Fuentes for dinner at Mar-a-Lago. Before that dinner, Fuentes had already promoted white-supremacist politics and denied or minimized the Holocaust. Fuentes also attended the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Ye had also posted antisemitic statements, including a threat to go “death con 3” on Jewish people. Nine days after the dinner, Ye publicly praised Hitler and expressed admiration for Nazis. Fuentes later said the Holocaust had been exaggerated, stated that he did not hate Hitler, and declared in 2023, “I love Hitler.”

In November 2025, Tucker Carlson interviewed Fuentes. Trump defended Carlson’s decision to interview him and declined to condemn Fuentes. By then, Fuentes’s Holocaust denial, antisemitism, white-supremacist politics, and praise of Hitler had been public for years.

Peter Baker and Susan Glasser reported that Trump complained to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, about American military leaders and asked why they could not behave like “the German generals” of World War II. Kelly reminded Trump that German officers had repeatedly plotted to kill Hitler. Trump answered that they had been “totally loyal.” Kelly later stated that Trump said Hitler “did some good things” and specifically credited Hitler with rebuilding Germany’s economy.

Kelly said Trump returned to the subject more than once. On January 11, 2017, he accused American intelligence agencies of conduct comparable to “Nazi Germany.” In May 2024, during a private Republican donor retreat in Palm Beach, Florida, while discussing his criminal cases, he accused President Joe Biden of running a “Gestapo administration.”

Repeatedly, Trump said immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country.” The Associated Press reported that politicians and extremism experts identified echoes of Hitler’s writings about Aryan blood. Jon Lewis, a research fellow at George Washington University’s Program on Extremism, characterized Trump’s rhetoric as fascist, white supremacist, and dehumanizing. At a December 19, 2023 campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa, Trump publicly acknowledged the comparison: “They said Hitler said that.”

Continuing the formulation, Donald Trump said immigrants were “destroying the blood of the country” and that “we’re going to have to get them out.” At Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, on May 23, 2017, Trump commemorated six million murdered Jews and described the Holocaust as a systematic attempt to eliminate the Jewish people. In a July 6, 2017 presidential address in Warsaw, Poland, Trump discussed Nazi Germany’s 1939 invasion of Poland and the Holocaust. At Warsaw, Donald Trump also addressed the Warsaw Ghetto, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and the systematic murder of millions of Polish Jews.

Ervin Staub, psychologist and professor emeritus at Massachusetts Amherst, has spent decades studying genocide, mass violence, bystander behavior, and persecution. Staub argues that people allow persecution to advance when they withdraw empathy from those being targeted.

Across these documented episodes, Trump has shown familiarity with Nazi history while describing immigrants through contamination rhetoric, praising Hitler’s economic achievements according to John Kelly, and invoking the Gestapo against American opponents.

When an individual with pronounced callous-unemotional traits gains and retains state power, private cruelty can become public policy and escalate as each abuse encounters less resistance. Successful evasions of accountability lower the barriers to more severe repression, allowing persecution to widen in scope and brutality. Each unchecked escalation makes the next easier to impose and harder to reverse. By the time the public understands what has happened, persecution may already have crossed into systematic atrocities.

For this article, the shattered scene mirrors a financial order that can look intact even as its foundations fracture.

On August 19, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent doubled planned buybacks of 10-to-30-year Treasury securities from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation, beginning September 9. The announcement followed a surge in the 30-year Treasury yield to 5.34 percent, the highest level since 2007. Federal debt had already exceeded $40 trillion, more than double the 2017 level.

On August 20, the bond market carried the warning beyond Wall Street. Investors were selling Treasuries as inflation and record federal debt threatened the value of long-term government bonds, forcing yields higher.

Those yields set mortgage rates and other borrowing costs, forcing households to absorb the financial consequences of Washington’s fiscal deterioration. Stocks remained near record highs while the bond market sounded a different verdict, because rising borrowing costs eventually reach consumer spending and economic growth.

Venezuela demonstrates how persistent deficit financing can end in sovereign default and currency collapse once creditors lose confidence in repayment. Successive governments borrowed heavily while the bolívar depreciated and external obligations entered default. Between 2013 and 2021, Venezuela’s real economy contracted more than 75 percent, exceeding America’s roughly 30 percent Great Depression decline. The IMF attributed the collapse to fiscal deficits, hyperinflation, currency depreciation, and external default, which restricted Venezuela’s access to international borrowing.

In July 2026, Venezuela’s central bank reported monthly inflation of 19.9 percent and annual inflation of 575.9 percent. Workers and retirees lose purchasing power when wages and pensions fail to match rising prices, while lenders charge businesses more or refuse financing. Governments that cannot service sovereign debt or maintain confidence in their currency can preside over contractions deeper than America’s post-1929 collapse.

Washington is now doubling long-duration Treasury buybacks as persistent deficits and elevated long-term yields force the government to refinance a growing debt load at higher rates. On August 19, long-dated yields and the dollar fell sharply, while gold ultimately surged more than 4 percent. Treasury can ease liquidity pressure in long-dated Treasury securities through expanded buybacks, but Treasury’s long-duration purchases do not reduce the deficit or federal debt. Treasury is now intervening in the long-bond market while Washington leaves the deficits and refinancing burden behind those yields unresolved.

When the dollar persistently depreciates, investors demand higher Treasury yields because future principal and interest payments buy less. Importers must spend more dollars to purchase foreign goods, so they raise domestic prices. The U.S. Treasury Department refinances maturing federal debt at the higher yields investors demand.

Higher federal interest payments widen deficits, requiring Congress to finance more government obligations through additional borrowing. If investors lose confidence in the federal government’s ability to stabilize debt, they may demand still higher yields. Businesses pass higher import costs to consumers, reducing purchasing power for workers and retirees. Social Security recipients and pensioners buy less with unchanged monthly payments.

Businesses facing costlier refinancing cut payrolls or postpone hiring, reducing income for wage-dependent households. As those incomes fall, more borrowers fall behind on mortgages and consumer debt. Lenders foreclose on delinquent properties, while forced sellers accept lower prices for homes and stocks. As more borrowers default, banks recognize larger losses on their balance sheets. Banks then reject riskier borrowers and charge higher rates on new household and business loans.

Republican leadership is orchestrating an economic collapse. GOP officials enacted safety-net cuts in 2025 and advanced banking deregulation in 2026, dismantling safeguards built after 1929 and 2008 on a documented timetable. Republicans are cutting Medicaid and SNAP while Medicare faces reductions, Social Security approaches trust-fund depletion, and banking regulators loosen financial safeguards.

Congress has made the next financial downturn more damaging for households than 2008 by reducing protections Americans relied on during that crisis. Federal borrowing also remains historically high. Medicaid and food assistance supported millions of laid-off workers in 2007; Republicans have since cut both.

A crash mints winners. When banks restrict credit and home and stock prices fall, indebted households must sell into declining markets. After 2007–2009, institutional investors used cash and cheap financing to buy foreclosed single-family homes in bulk. Those investors acquired homes, securities, and other distressed assets at depressed prices while forced sellers lost wealth.

Federal regulators are dismantling post-2008 safeguards despite federal investigators documenting the costs of weak capital rules and supervision. On June 18, 2026, the Fed, OCC, and FDIC closed comment on three proposals easing capital requirements and cutting large-bank surcharges. Those agencies had already cut supervisory staff 30 percent and moved to publish bank stress-test models. Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act amid 2025 safety-net reductions before regulators continued capital and supervisory rollbacks.

Trump is reversing post-2008 rules on bank capital, consumer protection, and derivatives clearing. Before 2008, regulators failed to restrain subprime lending, unregulated derivatives, and 30-to-1 leverage. Net worth fell from $69 trillion to $55 trillion as unemployment doubled to 10 percent. Dodd-Frank responded with stronger capital rules, the CFPB, and derivatives clearing.

The Trump administration is restoring a deregulatory model federal investigators documented as failed after 2008. Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve chair from 1987 to 2006, championed deregulation and financial-industry self-regulation. The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission concluded deregulation stripped safeguards that could have helped avert catastrophe. Greenspan told Congress his faith in financial institutions policing their own risks contained a fundamental flaw.

Russell Vought took control of the CFPB on February 7, 2025, halted oversight, and sought no additional Federal Reserve funding. A federal judge ordered continued funding December 30, 2025. Regulators reduced enhanced leverage-capital requirements for systemically important banks, effective April 1, 2026. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the objective: “responsibly deregulating the financial sector to accelerate what I call the re-privatization of the economy.” The administration has made deregulation official policy.

Title II ended taxpayer bailouts: failed-bank losses fall on shareholders, debt holders, and uninsured creditors. FDIC insurance protects deposits up to $250,000 and restores access immediately. Depositors holding more than $250,000 enter the liquidation queue as creditors for the uninsured balance. In future Title II liquidations, private shareholders and creditors bear losses while insured depositors retain federal protection.

The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 proposes restructuring federal banking regulation. Page 705 of Heritage’s Mandate for Leadership would merge the FDIC into one regulator and substitute “competition and market discipline” for federal oversight. A 2017 Heritage report urged Congress to cut deposit coverage to $40,000 and end federal insurance. Vought, running the CFPB, helped write Project 2025.

The 1929 crash began with unchecked speculation. Investors bought stocks on margin, often posting only 10 percent, while regulators ignored securities markets and deposits lacked federal insurance. When stocks collapsed that October, margin loans came due. Thousands of banks failed, and the Depression followed. Congress responded with federal deposit insurance in 1933 and the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1934 after bank failures, uninsured losses, and unregulated speculation destroyed savings.

Federal debt equaled 16.3 percent of the economy in 1929, leaving Washington room to respond. By March 2026, the federal government owed debt equal to 100.2 percent of GDP, and the total exceeded $39 trillion by June. By June, the federal government owed more than the nation produced in a year. Trump’s borrowing further reduced the fiscal capacity available for another crisis while imposing refinancing and interest costs far beyond those Washington carried in 1929.

Trump has dissolved the CFPB or starved the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau of funds, and banks set self-determined capital floors. Anti-money-laundering reporting reaches only part of the financial activity currently subject to federal reporting requirements, and private lenders extend trillions outside federal supervision. Regulators lack the legal and supervisory power necessary to halt a run.

Naomi Klein named disaster capitalism in 2007: governments exploit post-disaster chaos to impose privatization, deregulation, and cuts voters resist in calmer times. Political leaders can exploit fear to enact those measures before opponents organize resistance. After a banking panic or market breakdown, authorities can justify federal rescue financing, while earlier deregulatory decisions escape scrutiny. Firms that lobbied for weaker regulation receive emergency lending or guarantees. Wealthy investors buy distressed assets cheaply, expanding ownership of housing and failing businesses.

Republican officeholders swore to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. GOP leadership is engineering the next banking and credit collapse. Before the vote, the Congressional Budget Office projected 10 million people losing health coverage, lower incomes for the poorest tenth, and Social Security trust-fund depletion. Legislators read those findings and enacted the reconciliation legislation anyway, with documented knowledge of the projected harm.

Trump has spent his public life demolishing physical structures and attacking institutional constraints when they obstructed his objectives. When Trump considers a building or institutional rule an obstacle, he has repeatedly chosen removal rather than accommodation. He now commands an administration with the power to apply that same method to the institutions governing the world’s largest economy.

FBI Director Kash Patel plans to travel to Russia on October 14–15, 2026, less than three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections. Politico reported that Patel plans to visit Moscow and St. Petersburg, with Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, likely to host him. Under Patel, the FBI has spent 15 months developing law-enforcement collaboration with Russia targeting violent criminal networks. He told Reuters that the bureau’s new relationships with Russia and China were “new and dynamic.”

Reuters described the partnerships as a major break with past FBI practice and reported counterintelligence concerns from former bureau officials. Patel acknowledged Russia’s continuing adversarial conduct but defended engagement with Russian law enforcement, even as U.S. intelligence repeatedly identified Russia as a leading foreign-interference threat to American elections.

Murdoch’s New York Post endorsed Reagan in November 1979. By January 1983, the White House called Murdoch a “staunch supporter”; Reagan received him in the Oval Office. Murdoch became an American citizen on September 4, 1985, as Fox pursued six Metromedia stations. The FCC later called those acquisitions the foundation of a fourth national broadcast network.

Two years after Murdoch became an American citizen, Donald Trump traveled to Moscow in July 1987. He went to explore a hotel project with Soviet officials. Former KGB officer Alnur Mussayev later alleged that Soviet intelligence recruited Trump during that visit. Mussayev said the KGB assigned Trump the codename “Krasnov.”

Former KGB major Yuri Shvets separately described KGB cultivation efforts involving Trump. Shvets said Soviet intelligence encouraged Trump through flattery, sustained attention, and encouragement of his political ambitions.

Weeks after returning from Moscow, Trump purchased full-page advertisements in three major American newspapers. They appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. Trump attacked American defense commitments and demanded that wealthy allies shoulder substantially greater military costs. Shvets later characterized Trump’s intervention as a successful Soviet influence operation.

Trump’s July 1987 Moscow visit preceded his paid national attack on American alliance policy by only weeks. Trump publicly challenged security commitments Washington had spent decades building and defending. His arguments advanced objectives Moscow had long pursued: weakening American alliances and reducing Washington’s international commitments.

Russian strategic and geopolitical writing, including Aleksandr Dugin’s 1997 Foundations of Geopolitics, has contemplated weakening the United States through internal fracture rather than military invasion. Dugin prescribed separatism, racial conflict, extremism, political disorder, and American isolationism. John B. Dunlop found the book extraordinarily influential among Russian military and police institutions.

News Corp held 79 percent stakes in News Outdoor Russia and News Outdoor Romania, then sold both to a VTB Capital-led group. Its SEC filing reported approximately $360 million from the combined transaction.

The Senate Intelligence Committee identified Konstantin Kilimnik as a Russian intelligence officer and longtime Paul Manafort associate. Manafort repeatedly sought to share internal Trump campaign information with Kilimnik. The committee found Manafort’s campaign position created opportunities for Russian intelligence to obtain confidential campaign information.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller found Russian election interference “sweeping and systematic.” The Kremlin-backed Internet Research Agency built American-facing networks and impersonated Americans. Its operatives also purchased political advertisements. They exploited racial grievances and organized opposing demonstrations.

That Russian commercial history later intersected with Murdoch’s American media empire. Some Fox personalities amplified Russian allegations of American biological-weapons activity in Ukraine, giving Kremlin narratives access to a major American audience. By 2024, Russian state television was also giving Trump favorable treatment.

In July 2024, U.S. intelligence identified Russia as the predominant foreign threat to American elections. Russian actors sought to influence electoral outcomes and undermine election confidence. U.S. intelligence reported that foreign actors were conducting broader influence operations intended to undermine America’s global role and Washington’s international standing.

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi disbanded the Justice Department’s Foreign Influence Task Force in February 2025. Her memorandum limited FARA and Section 951 criminal charges to conduct resembling traditional espionage by foreign governments. Trump ordered agencies to prepare large-scale reductions in force across the federal workforce. Trump ordered withdrawal from 66 international organizations on January 7, 2026.

Christopher Armitage, publisher of the Substack The Existentialist Republic, documented the elimination and reduction of federal capabilities for detecting foreign election interference in his August 19, 2026 watchdog report. Storm-1516 more than doubled its output during early 2026 and approached daily production by spring. The Russian operation had created at least 200 fictional media websites and more than 1,000 fake journalist personas.

As that operation accelerated, Trump’s administration dismantled FBI, CISA, State Department, and ODNI capabilities for detecting foreign interference. CISA froze election-security work and ended funding for the Election Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center. Secretary of State Marco Rubio closed the Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference office on April 16, 2025.

ODNI eliminated the Foreign Malign Influence Center while cutting its workforce by more than 40 percent, assigning foreign-influence monitoring elsewhere in the intelligence community. The Federal Election Commission lost its quorum on May 1, 2025. On July 9, 2026, Trump fired Democratic Election Assistance Commissioners Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland as Republican Commissioner Christy McCormick resigned, leaving the four-member commission vacant.

Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna hosted a sanctioned Russian State Duma delegation in Washington on March 26, 2026. Members Vyacheslav Nikonov, Boris Chernyshov, and Mikhail Delyagin met with congressional and executive-branch officials. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Roger Wicker warned the delegation pursued Kremlin strategic aims, including gathering useful intelligence. Luna later supported reciprocal congressional travel to Russia, while Russian officials said she and other lawmakers planned to visit after the new State Duma convened.

To reconstruct the federal system after the Trump-Republican era, a successor government must reverse the election-security and counterintelligence dismantling. Congress must also confront changes to the Supreme Court and broadcast-ownership rules made during the Trump-Republican era and back to the Regan period. Congress can repopulate the Election Assistance Commission. Moreover, lawmakers can reactivate ODNI’s Foreign Malign Influence Center under 50 U.S.C. § 3059. A successor attorney general can rescind Pamela Bondi’s February 5, 2025, restrictions on FARA and § 951 prosecutions as well.

Federal law established the Supreme Court’s nine-seat composition, leaving lawmakers authority to alter the number by statute. If the judiciary invalidates statutes restoring election-security and counterintelligence protections, legislators may authorize additional seats. The president would nominate new justices, with the Senate deciding confirmation. Article III creates the Supreme Court but does not cap the membership number.

The FCC eliminated the 39-percent national television ownership cap on August 6, 2026. Congress can impose a statutory ceiling that future commissioners cannot erase administratively. Lawmakers can require political broadcasters to identify the people and corporations financing their programming. Federal law can also expose foreign money concealed through domestic intermediaries.

Congress can restore CISA operations and revive ODNI’s foreign-influence functions. Trump administration officials eliminated positions and dismantled offices that employed veteran CISA and ODNI specialists. A successor government must rebuild intelligence-sharing relationships with allied and partner services.

Forty-seven years after Reagan carried Hollywood performance into the presidency, Trump drove the Republican experiment with celebrity politics to its ugliest conclusion. An actor opened the door; a salesman with six corporate bankruptcies turned political theater into presidential power—and left the country fractured and broke. After nearly half a century, voters know the trick. The next political confidence person will not inherit a blank stage; he or she will inherit the wreckage and an electorate that already knows exactly what the con costs.

On August 17, 2026, President Donald J. Trump sat in the Oval Office with 16-year-old California State Parks lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, whom Williams had rescued from pounding surf at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, on July 25. Trump praised Williams as “a real hero,” then told Nathaniel, “I don’t know if I’d do it. I wouldn’t probably. You’re lucky I wasn’t on the service that day.”

Trump did not make a passing verbal mistake. Trump first questioned whether he would attempt the rescue, then repeated that he probably would not have done so directly to the ten-year-old whose life Williams saved.

The extermination of a targeted population begins by teaching everyone else to regard suffering and death with indifference.

For years, Trump has used dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants, political opponents, and other groups he has singled out as threats. During the 2026 election cycle, Trump has intensified that language. Trump increasingly strips his targets of equal human worth by casting them as diseased or animal-like and by treating identity itself as pathology or danger.

Nathan P. Kalmoe of UW–Madison’s Center for Communication and Civic Renewal, and Johns Hopkins political scientist Lilliana Mason, show that political leaders can inflame partisan attitudes toward violence. A nationally representative UC Davis study published in June 2026 found 52.2 percent of MAGA Republicans considered political violence usually or always justified for at least one objective. Personal willingness to kill remained far lower, but Trump already commands a constituency in which political violence has crossed from taboo into justification.

On August 14, 2026, four days before this article’s publication, Trump responded to vandalism at Washington’s National World War II Memorial. Linking the incident to earlier alleged damage at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Trump wrote, “We are on their trail! Where do these animals come from???” Authorities had arrested 41-year-old Melissa Farris of Kentucky in connection with the August 13 vandalism.

After Michigan’s August 4, 2026, Democratic U.S. Senate primary, Trump turned the same language of vilification and menace toward Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed and, within the surrounding political campaign, a religious minority. On August 5, Trump called El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s open Senate seat, a communist and accused him of hating Jewish people “with a passion that burns in his heart.” El-Sayed, who would become the first Muslim U.S. senator if elected, rejected the antisemitism accusation. On August 13, 2026 the Associated Press documented an escalating wave of anti-Muslim rhetoric surrounding El-Sayed’s candidacy.

Jacques Sémelin, a French political scientist and CNRS emeritus research professor at Sciences Po specializing in genocide and mass violence, traces the movement from enemy construction to organized violence. Sémelin shows how fear, resentment, and fantasies of purification can reshape collective identity around a designated adversary. Government officials and movement leaders can then use inflammatory discourse to construct a security rationale for eliminating the targeted group as necessary for collective survival.

Political leaders can still interrupt threat construction, although Trump has already normalized dehumanizing language within part of his coalition. In 2008, when a supporter portrayed Barack Obama as someone Americans should fear, John McCain rejected the claim before his own constituency. McCain refused to convert political opposition into existential menace.

Democratic lawmakers counter that normalization when they confront Trump’s dehumanizing rhetoric as an escalating political danger, not another controversy to outlast. Journalists and researchers expose the progression by showing, statement by statement, how Trump intensifies his language toward targeted Americans. State and local prosecutors intervene when threats or politically motivated violence cross criminal thresholds. Trump has already moved part of his coalition beyond taboo and into justification; the danger now is supporters acting on that permission.

Dr. Jonathan Leader Maynard, Reader in International Politics at King’s College London, shows how government officials, party leaders, and security authorities use ideology to transform perceived threats into arguments for mass killing. Maynard identifies six pathways that legitimize atrocity: threat construction, guilt attribution, deidentification, valorization, futurization, and destruction of alternatives.

Maynard’s first pathway, threat construction, depends not only on defining an enemy but on communicating that danger to others. Before rulers or military commanders can mobilize a population, they must make the perceived threat intelligible and signal that conflict is approaching. Across history, the instruments used to carry that warning have changed. In nineteenth-century Asante, military communication could travel through the sound of drums.

Among the Asante of West Africa, centered on Kumasi in present-day Ghana, trained drummers used established rhythmic patterns to transmit messages and support wartime mobilization. Drums served both political and military authority, while specific rhythmic signals could warn of danger, convey commands, and announce approaching battle.

The drums are no longer distant; they are beating closer, louder by the day, and history warns that when the drums finally stop, the bloodshed has already begun.

On August 16, 2026, NBC moderator Kristen Welker asked House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries directly whether he supported Medicare for All. Jeffries said he neither currently co-sponsored nor supported the legislation, despite previously co-sponsoring Medicare-for-All legislation. He rejected legislation he once co-sponsored while leading a caucus whose voters overwhelmingly want Democrats to pursue the policy.

In June 2026, 73 percent of Democrats supported replacing private insurance with a national government plan; by August 2026, 90 percent wanted Democrats focused on passing Medicare for All. Reuters/Ipsos found 60 percent of independents supported government-provided healthcare for every American. Jeffries therefore opposes a policy with broad support among Democrats and independents.

In March 1983, Democrat J. J. Pickle, House Social Security Subcommittee chair, proposed raising full retirement age from 65 to 67. Most House Democrats opposed the amendment; 76 joined 152 Republicans for passage. Later, 163 House and 26 Senate Democrats approved the conference agreement. Congress converted age 65 from an established entitlement to a historical benchmark; Democratic majorities never restored the standard.

Democrats controlled both chambers in November 1993 when the House approved NAFTA 234–200. Among Democrats, 156 opposed NAFTA; 102 joined 132 Republicans—the largest affirmative bloc—for passage. Democratic backing gave Clinton’s market-oriented trade program bipartisan legitimacy; Democratic Congresses preserved NAFTA’s framework.

A 2024 American Economic Review study measured Mexican import competition’s political cost: heavily exposed counties had roughly 6 percent lower employment than minimally exposed counties and increased Republican support after NAFTA took effect in 1994.

Republicans shifted welfare policy after taking Congress in 1994, and Democratic votes helped enact the replacement of AFDC with TANF and termination of the federal cash-assistance entitlement. On July 31, 1996, 98 House Democrats joined 230 Republicans in approving the final welfare agreement; 25 Democratic senators supported final passage the next day. Congress abolished Aid to Families with Dependent Children, ended the federal cash-assistance entitlement, imposed a 60-month limit, and raised weekly work requirements from 20 hours in 1997–1998 to 25 in 1999 and 30 beginning in 2000.

Congress also severed automatic Medicaid eligibility from cash-welfare receipt. The Government Accountability Office later documented declining Medicaid enrollment, including eligible families who lost or failed to retain coverage. Later Democratic Congresses never restored AFDC, allowing the entitlement’s abolition and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families block-grant structure enacted in 1996 to remain federal welfare law.

Congressional Democrats also helped enact the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. One hundred eighteen House Democrats supported DOMA on July 12, followed by 32 Democratic senators on September 10. Their votes helped deny federal recognition to same-sex marriages.

Democratic crossover votes also helped enact federal abortion restrictions. In 1995, 73 House Democrats supported criminal penalties for physicians performing a specified later-abortion procedure; 63 Democrats backed the 2003 conference bill that enacted the federal prohibition.

In 2009, 64 House Democrats approved the Stupak amendment. The Stupak amendment extended federal restrictions on abortion funding and insurance coverage from medical procedures to insurance financing. Republican lawmakers subsequently advanced federal proposals imposing nationwide abortion prohibitions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

During healthcare reform, Democrats held unified power and faced a choice over private insurers. In November 2009, House Democrats passed H.R. 3962 with a public plan competing against private insurers. Senate Democratic leaders abandoned the public option when opposition within the Democratic caucus left them without the sixty-vote coalition required for passage. Congress expanded coverage while preserving private insurers as gatekeepers between millions of Americans and medical care.

Democrats controlled the presidency and both chambers when the Senate parliamentarian blocked a $15 reconciliation provision; Senator Bernie Sanders forced a vote to waive the budgetary point of order against the $15 reconciliation provision. Seven Democrats joined Republicans to defeat the effort 58–42, leaving Congress without the increase leaders championed. The federal minimum remains $7.25 in 2026—unchanged since July 2009.

Public Law 119-21 restructures Medicaid eligibility, enrollment, financing, Marketplace subsidies, and Medicare eligibility. Beginning January 1, 2027, applicable individuals—nonpregnant adults ages 19 through 64 covered through the Medicaid adult group or qualifying §1115 demonstrations, subject to statutory exemptions—must complete 80 monthly hours of work or qualifying activity, with six-month eligibility reviews. CBO projects 5.2 million more uninsured Americans in 2027 than under its January 2025 baseline.

By 2034, CBO projects that 10 million more Americans will lack health insurance than under the January 2025 baseline. Medicaid provisions account for 7.5 million, including 5.3 million from work requirements and 700,000 from six-month redeterminations. CBO estimates 70 percent losing coverage through redeterminations will face paperwork and reenrollment failures rather than substantive ineligibility. CBO estimates approximately 100,000 people will lose Medicare coverage by January 2027.

House Republicans introduced H.R. 722 in January 2025, and Senate Republicans introduced S. 3667 in January 2026. Both bills define legal personhood from fertilization through the Fourteenth Amendment, creating a federal basis for abortion prohibitions even in states protecting abortion rights.

Federal officials could also pursue nationwide restrictions without new legislation. During his July confirmation process, Todd Blanche told senators the Justice Department would examine Comstock Act questions under governing law and consult the Office of Legal Counsel. The Senate confirmed Blanche 50–49 on August 8, and he became the 88th United States Attorney General on August 10. Blanche now directs Justice Department enforcement: his department could broaden Comstock enforcement to restrict interstate shipment of abortion medication and related equipment nationwide.

Congress has left the federal minimum wage at $7.25 since July 24, 2009. Full-time annual gross pay equals $15,080, while the 2026 federal poverty guideline for one person is $15,960. CPI-U rose from 215.351 in July 2009 to 333.918 in July 2026. Preserving the 2009 wage’s purchasing power would require approximately $11.24 today, meaning the statutory minimum has lost about 35.5 percent of purchasing power.

Census counted 35.9 million Americans below the official poverty threshold in 2024, or 10.6 percent of the population. The official poverty rate declined from its 2023 level, even as 35.9 million Americans remained below the federal poverty threshold. However, CBO projects Public Law 119-21 will reduce lower-income household resources through Medicaid and SNAP cuts. From 2026 through 2034, federal and state in-kind transfers will fall by roughly $900 billion.

Voters without bachelor’s degrees moved from a 56–42 Democratic affiliation advantage in 2007 to a 51–45 Republican advantage by 2023; they represent 60 percent of registered voters. Trump carried noncollege voters by 14 points in 2024, while independents shifted from a nine-point Biden advantage in 2020 to an even 48–48 division. Democrats’ advantage among voters under 50 contracted from 17 points in 2020 to seven points in 2024.

By September 2025, 67 percent told Pew their party made them feel frustrated. They cited inadequate resistance to the Trump administration most often, followed by leadership failures, an incoherent agenda, disconnection from voters, and unfulfilled promises.

As House Democratic leader, Jeffries now heads a caucus with a decades-long record of accepting major Republican policy gains and leaving them intact after Democrats regained power. His rejection of Medicare for All extends that pattern rather than reversing the Democratic record.

Jeffries has already made the immediate choice. He rejected Medicare for All despite overwhelming demand from Democratic voters, while his caucus continues governing within limits established through the higher retirement age, post-AFDC welfare law, private-insurer power, federal abortion restrictions, and a $7.25 minimum wage.

In 1983, J. J. Pickle and 76 House Democrats advanced the Social Security retirement-age increase. In 1993, 102 House Democrats backed NAFTA, and in 1996, 98 supported welfare retrenchment. In 2009, 64 House Democrats backed the Stupak amendment. In 2021, seven Democratic senators helped defeat the $15 minimum-wage effort, and in 2026, Hakeem Jeffries rejects Medicare for All.

Republican governments have already narrowed healthcare access, reproductive freedom, wage protections, and the social safety net. Further Republican control would intensify healthcare restrictions, reproductive limits, wage suppression, and safety-net cuts. Defeating Republicans in November does not absolve Democratic incumbents who later regain power. Democratic majorities remain accountable when Republican policies survive their return to office. Voters can defeat Republicans in November and remove compliant Democrats in primaries.

For nearly half a century, Republican governments have shifted wealth upward while weakening wages and labor rights. Democratic leaders win power promising reversals, yet Republican changes survive Democratic majorities. Congress has not restored retirement at 65 or the federal cash-assistance entitlement abolished with AFDC. Private insurers still dominate healthcare financing, abortion restrictions expand, and the federal minimum wage remains $7.25.

Days after warning that International Criminal Court jurisdiction could reach U.S. military operations, Pete Hegseth urged nearly 20 governments to abandon the Court. On August 12, 2026, the defense secretary addressed those Americas Counter-Cartel Coalition governments in Panama City.

On September 2, 2025, U.S. forces conducted an operation in international waters near Venezuela that requires examination of Hegseth’s authorization under the Rome Statute. The initial strike killed nine people; two survived and clung to wreckage. Hegseth said he watched remotely, saw no survivors, left for another meeting, and later learned Admiral Frank Bradley had ordered a second attack. The second strike killed both men. The White House said the defense secretary authorized Bradley to conduct both September 2 strikes.

Bradley denied receiving a specific “kill them all” order from Hegseth, while the White House said Hegseth authorized Bradley to conduct both strikes. Representatives Adam Smith and Jim Himes described footage showing shirtless survivors on a disabled vessel. Senator Tom Cotton disputed Smith and Himes’s interpretation, saying the two men appeared to right a drug-laden boat and continue their mission.

Military commanders must treat shipwrecked combatants who abstain from hostilities and do not attempt escape as protected under the Pentagon’s Law of War Manual. Department of Defense guidance states that an order to fire on protected shipwreck survivors is clearly illegal. After the second strike killed both men, Hegseth said he fully supported Bradley’s action and would have made the same decision.

To establish Article 8 war-crime liability under Hegseth’s law-of-armed-conflict theory, prosecutors must prove an armed conflict and a nexus between that armed conflict and the alleged survivor killings. The Trump administration characterizes the cartel campaign as an armed conflict. George Washington University law professor Laura Dickinson told Reuters that most legal experts reject the administration’s characterization of the cartel campaign as an armed conflict.

Hegseth said Colombian authorities authorized joint U.S. military operations and discussed possible strikes against the National Liberation Army and remnants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. U.S. Southern Command has struck targets across the Caribbean and eastern Pacific since September 2025. By August 15, 2026, Operation Southern Spear forces had destroyed 67 vessels and killed over 220 people. On May 19, 2026, military officials had produced no public evidence that targeted vessels carried drugs and instead cited intelligence showing travel along known trafficking routes.

ICC prosecutors must establish the struck vessel’s State of registration before invoking Article 12 over the September 2, 2025, survivor strike.

Justice Department prosecutors, and ICC prosecutors if jurisdiction attaches, should obtain Hegseth’s targeting authorizations, unedited surveillance, intelligence assessments, legal memoranda, rules of engagement, command messages, and post-strike reports. Prosecutors can use that evidence to establish whether Bradley received authority covering the survivor strike, what commanders saw before firing, when Hegseth learned both shipwrecked men had survived the first attack, and what orders the defense secretary issued after Bradley killed both survivors.

House Armed Services ranking Democrat Adam Smith and House Intelligence ranking Democrat Jim Himes reviewed the classified September 2, 2025, strike video. They also questioned U.S. Special Operations Command commander Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley and Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Dan Caine about the second attack. Smith then demanded the execution orders, operational rules, complete follow-on-strike footage, and Hegseth’s public testimony.

Pentagon Inspector General Platte B. Moring III, the Lead Inspector General overseeing Operation Southern Spear, began evaluating U.S. Southern Command’s Joint Targeting Cycle on May 11, 2026.

ICC prosecutors should examine Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley, President Donald Trump, and General Francis L. Donovan alongside Pete Hegseth. ICC prosecutors should examine Trump under Article 25 for any presidential order or material participation connecting Trump to the September 2 survivor strike or later Southern Spear strikes involving unlawful killings.

Donovan assumed U.S. Southern Command on February 5, 2026. Prosecutors should examine every Southern Spear strike Donovan directed after assuming command and determine whether he knew, or should have known from reports, that subordinates were committing war crimes and whether he failed to prevent or punish the alleged war crimes. Colombia accepted ICC jurisdiction in 2002 and jurisdiction over war crimes in 2009.

If ICC jurisdiction reaches the September 2 survivor strike, Colombia can refer the situation, and the ICC Prosecutor can seek Pre-Trial Chamber authorization. Under Article 25, prosecutors can pursue individual criminal responsibility for ordering, soliciting, inducing, aiding, or contributing to crimes. Prosecutors can invoke Article 28(b) against civilian superiors who exercise effective authority and control, consciously disregard evidence of subordinate crimes, and fail to prevent, repress, or submit those crimes for investigation.

Under Article 17, judges determine whether national authorities genuinely investigate or prosecute the same conduct. If national proceedings do not bar the ICC case, judges may, under Article 58 and upon reasonable grounds, issue an arrest warrant. Under Article 89, States Parties receiving the Court’s request must arrest and surrender the accused.

National governments have executed ICC arrest warrants against former heads of state even without an ICC police force. Philippine police arrested former President Rodrigo Duterte on an ICC warrant in March 2025, and Philippine officials transferred Duterte to custody in The Hague. By May 2026, national governments had executed 23 of 66 ICC arrest warrants, while 125 Rome Statute members remained legally obligated to cooperate with arrest and surrender requests. If ICC judges issued a warrant for Pete Hegseth, any cooperating State Party could arrest the U.S. defense secretary and transfer Hegseth to ICC custody in The Hague.

On September 5, 2025, President Donald Trump authorized “Department of War” and “Secretary of War” as secondary titles for the Department of Defense and Pete Hegseth. Hegseth embraced the secondary-title change, declaring that the department would pursue “maximum lethality.” Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel served as chief of the Armed Forces High Command, or OKW, from February 4, 1938, through Germany’s collapse in May 1945.

Keitel transmitted the Commissar Order to field commanders and signed a 1941 directive permitting soldiers to shoot suspected civilians without trial. He later signed the “Night and Fog” decree and transmitted Hitler’s Commando Order, directing German forces to kill captured Allied commandos, including men attempting to surrender. These directives authorized deliberate killings without judicial review. On September 16, 1941, Keitel further ordered German forces to execute 50 to 100 Communists for every German soldier killed in occupied Soviet territory.

On October 1, 1941, Keitel ordered commanders to hold hostages for execution after attacks on German troops. Allied authorities arrested Keitel on May 13, 1945, and Nuremberg prosecutors formally charged him on October 18, 1945. Prosecutors charged Keitel with conspiracy, crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. On October 1, 1946, the International Military Tribunal convicted Keitel on all four counts and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Authorities executed Keitel at Nuremberg on October 16, 1946. Under Article 8 of the Nuremberg Charter, superior orders did not eliminate individual responsibility. Under Article 7, government office did not shield officials from prosecution.

Nuremberg prosecutors traced Hitler’s lethal directives to Keitel’s documented participation in orders against legally protected people. ICC prosecutors would reconstruct the September 2, 2025, command chain through Hegseth’s authorization and Bradley’s second strike. Prosecutors would determine whether Hegseth authorized Bradley’s second strike after two shipwrecked survivors remained alive. ICC prosecutors would examine Hegseth’s authorization under the Rome Statute, including his later support for Bradley’s second strike and his statement that he would personally have ordered the second strike.

ICC judges issued Putin’s arrest warrant on March 17, 2023, alleging responsibility for unlawfully deporting and transferring Ukrainian children from occupied Ukraine to Russia. Judges issued Netanyahu’s warrant on November 21, 2024, alleging starvation as a method of warfare and crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts in Gaza.

As of August 16, 2026, Putin remains Russia’s president and Netanyahu remains Israel’s prime minister. Neither leader has appeared before the ICC. Mongolia admitted Putin in September 2024 without arresting him; ICC judges later found that Mongolia violated its Article 89 obligation to arrest and surrender the Russian president. If ICC judges issued a warrant for Hegseth and transmitted an Article 89 request, a State Party admitting the defense secretary would confront the treaty’s arrest-and-surrender obligation.

If ICC prosecutors establish that Hegseth’s authority covered the second strike, his public statement could support proof of Hegseth’s knowledge and participation. If ICC judges ultimately issue a warrant based on Hegseth’s authorization, knowledge, and participation, a State Party could arrest Hegseth and surrender him to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Trump-Appointed Bank Regulator Advances Trump Family Crypto Venture Toward a Federal Charter

On August 14, 2026, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency officials moved a Trump-family cryptocurrency enterprise closer to operating a national trust bank. They granted World Liberty Trust Company preliminary conditional approval. World Liberty Financial and World Liberty Trust Company share indirect owners.

Final approval would let World Liberty Trust managers issue USD1, maintain reserves, and provide nationwide digital-asset custody. BitGo currently handles USD1 issuance and custody. The charter would prohibit ordinary deposits and conventional loans.

A federal charter would place USD1 issuance, reserve management, and digital-asset custody under one banking framework. Reuters reported that nationwide authority could help World Liberty pursue institutional clients. USD1 carried roughly $4 billion in market capitalization when OCC officials announced the approval.

President Trump nominated Jonathan Gould as comptroller in February 2025. The Senate confirmed him in July, and Gould assumed office five days later. OCC officials said career employees reviewed World Liberty Trust Company’s application under authority he delegated.

Reuters calculated that World Liberty directed more than $1.6 billion to Trump and his family through April 2026. The news organization estimated USD1 produced about $50 million for the Trump family through June. Trump’s relatives therefore held a substantial financial interest while OCC officials considered federal banking authority for World Liberty Trust.

MAGA supporters cannot open checking or savings accounts at World Liberty Trust under the proposed charter. They can already transfer money into Trump-family cryptocurrency products by purchasing WLFI governance tokens or USD1 through cryptocurrency exchanges and trading platforms. World Liberty Financial began selling WLFI in October 2024 and launched USD1 in March 2025, creating those revenue channels before OCC officials granted World Liberty Trust preliminary conditional approval.

Donald Trump licensed his name and image under an arrangement sending 75% of token-sale revenue to DT Marks DEFI LLC. The Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust owns 70% of DT Marks; other Trump family members own the remaining 30%. Reuters found no evidence that Trump family members invested personal capital to create World Liberty.

Reuters calculated $674 million in World Liberty token-buyer losses through April 30, 2026, including unrealized losses. Several WLFI investors interviewed by Reuters said Trump’s political position or perceived business ability influenced their decisions. Chicago Booth scholar John Paul Rollert said promoters profiting despite investor failure gets “closer to what looks like a scam.”

Eric Trump signed a passivity commitment as president of Trump-family affiliate DT Marks SC LLC. The document restricts influence over World Liberty Trust management, pricing, investments, personnel, and operations. OCC filings place DT Marks SC LLC within the proposed bank’s ownership structure.

Steve Witkoff co-founded World Liberty before Trump appointed him Middle East special envoy in January 2025. His son Zach serves as World Liberty Financial’s chief executive and World Liberty Trust’s proposed president and chairman. Robert Witkoff, Steve’s brother, would serve as a trust-bank director.

Four days before Trump’s January 20, 2025 inauguration, Aryam Investment 1 agreed to pay $500 million for 49% of World Liberty Financial. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE national security adviser and brother of President Mohamed bin Zayed, backed the investment vehicle. The agreement required an initial $250 million payment.

Corporate documents reviewed by reporters showed $187 million went to Trump-family entities and at least $31 million to Witkoff-family affiliates. Eric Trump signed the $500 million ownership transaction for World Liberty Financial. In May 2025, Abu Dhabi’s state-controlled MGX used $2 billion in USD1 to purchase an equity stake in Binance.

Sheikh Tahnoon chairs MGX, and the May 2025 Binance transaction created most of USD1’s circulation. The Trump administration later authorized expanded UAE access to advanced American artificial-intelligence chips after earlier national-security restrictions. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Andy Kim asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in February 2026 whether CFIUS should review Aryam Investment 1’s $500 million World Liberty investment.

CFIUS, Treasury’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, reviews foreign investments for national-security risks. OCC officials confined their August 2026 charter analysis to World Liberty Trust Company and its proposed shareholders. They said foreign World Liberty Financial investors were not principal shareholders of the trust bank and cited passivity commitments restricting investor control. OCC officials therefore excluded broader foreign-investment and constitutional questions from the charter determination.

OCC officials approved World Liberty Trust’s acquisition of USD1 reserve assets and associated BitGo liabilities. They exempted the transfer from specified Regulation W limits, collateral requirements, and the prohibition involving low-quality assets. Federal safety-and-soundness requirements govern the reserve-asset and liability transaction.

Federal bribery law criminalizes corrupt exchanges of value for official acts. OCC enforcement authority covers statutory violations, unsafe or unsound banking practices, and fiduciary breaches.

Under 18 U.S.C. §1001, knowingly and willfully concealing material facts or making materially false statements within OCC jurisdiction carries up to five years’ imprisonment. Bribery involving an official act under 18 U.S.C. §201 carries up to fifteen years. OCC officials may impose civil penalties, restitution, cease-and-desist orders, and banking bans on directors, officers, employees, or controlling shareholders. CFIUS may penalize parties for material misstatements, omissions, or false and materially incomplete certifications during national-security review.

Charles Keating’s American Continental acquired Lincoln Savings and Loan in 1984. By April 1987, federal thrift regulators were investigating Lincoln when Senators Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, John Glenn, John McCain, and Donald Riegle intervened. Senate ethics investigators later examined whether the Keating Five pressured regulators on Keating’s behalf.

Lincoln branches sold approximately $250 million in uninsured American Continental bonds, largely to retirees, before the company collapsed in April 1989. About 23,000 customers held worthless bonds, including savers accustomed to federally insured products. Federal regulators seized Lincoln; the Office of Thrift Supervision later barred Keating from federally insured banking and ordered $36.4 million in restitution.

Former federal thrift regulator William K. Black testified that Keating sought political intervention against Lincoln investigators. Black defines “control fraud” as executives or controlling owners using financial institutions to commit fraud and enrich themselves.

OCC officials conditionally approved Anchorage Digital Bank as a national trust bank on January 13, 2021. Anchorage gained nationwide authority to custody digital assets and conduct fiduciary activities without operating a conventional deposit-taking bank. On April 21, 2022, the OCC issued a consent order after finding that executives failed to establish required Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money-laundering controls. The OCC later granted World Liberty Trust preliminary conditional approval after approving Anchorage’s national trust-bank conversion.

Ferdinand Marcos Sr. governed the Philippines from 1965 until opponents forced him from power in February 1986. He imposed martial law in 1972 and exercised extraordinary presidential power for nine years. Reuters later reported accusations that the Marcos family siphoned about $10 billion from the Philippine central bank and other public resources.

President Corazon Aquino created the Presidential Commission on Good Government in 1986 to recover wealth attributed to Marcos and his associates. By 2022, Reuters reported that Philippine authorities had recovered about $5 billion, with another $2.4 billion still under litigation. Investigators traced disputed Marcos wealth through bank deposits, corporate shares, real estate, jewelry, artwork, and overseas holdings.

Trump’s family received more than $1.6 billion from World Liberty while OCC officials considered World Liberty Trust Company’s national trust-bank application. The same officials approved a regulatory exemption governing the transfer of USD1 reserves and associated BitGo liabilities. Final approval would place OCC banking supervisors over an institution financially connected through ownership structures to the sitting president’s family.

World Liberty Trust Company differs from earlier Trump-family self-enrichment arrangements because federal banking law would require detailed records of the proposed national trust bank’s financial activity. Trump-appointed banking regulators can shape supervisory and enforcement priorities during his presidency but cannot control every later administration, congressional investigation, or federal prosecution. Those banking records would remain subject to federal retention requirements after Trump’s family and associates lose the political protection they hold today.

ICE now seeks a contact electrical-force weapon capable of fatally electrocuting quota “targets.”

The Department of Homeland Security will spend up to $20 million on the mass distribution of CTG-5 electric shock gloves to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for routine arrests and mass deportations. On August 13, 2026, White House border czar Tom Homan defended the CTG-5 procurement, arguing that ICE agents could compel compliance before resorting to deadly force. Homan’s admission leaves ICE defending a potentially fatal electrical weapon while ICE still lacks completed training protocols or binding rules restricting when agents can shock targeted humans,

Electric-chair electrocution protocols place electrodes on the head and leg to transmit lethal electrical current through the body. Judicial electrocution became largely obsolete after lethal injection displaced the electric chair amid documented burns and severe pain. Electrocution can cause death through ventricular fibrillation or asystole, as well as respiratory arrest. A forensic review of 43 judicial electrocutions documented characteristic burns beneath the scalp and right-calf electrodes. Electrical current traversing the thorax (chest) directly threatens cardiac conduction. Electrode placement determines which tissues and organs fall within that potentially lethal electrical pathway.

The manufacturer specifies 324 to 362 volts and a maximum pulse current of 0.7 to 1.2 amperes. Each discharge lasts 114 to 116 microseconds, with approximately 29 to 30 pulses delivered every second.

Cheek contact delivers repeated electrical discharges beside the eye and across nearby facial nerves and muscles. Electrical-injury cases document cataracts and retinal damage, including detachment and atrophy. Cases also document optic-nerve damage and permanent vision loss. Neck or upper chest contact places electrical pulses over nerves, respiratory structures, and the thorax. Documented injuries include myocardial damage capable of progressing to ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrest, and death.

Compliant Technologies prohibit electrical shocks from imposing as punishment or torture and bars use for verbal defiance alone. The manufacturer also warns against shocking children and people with serious disabilities because electrical current creates heightened medical risks for those populations. A Kentucky wrongful-death complaint alleges Madison County jail personnel shocked Jonathan Mansfield 27 times with the same technology in 2024.

Because agents would keep issued CTG-5 gloves home when off-duty, the electrical weapon will enter households with spouses, children, relatives, and visitors. A small child can put on the CTG-5 and activate a discharge without understanding the danger. Electrical current from that activation can trigger ventricular fibrillation, respiratory arrest, permanent injury, or death.

Iran has already used direct-contact electrical weapons against detainees. Amnesty International reported in March 2025 that IRGC Basij personnel shocked detained boys’ genitals with stun guns during the 2022 Woman Life Freedom uprising. Amnesty classifies direct-contact electric-shock weapons as inherently abusive and warns that prolonged application can cause death.

Madison County Detention Center investigators documented CTG-5 shocks lasting 45 and 99 seconds, far beyond the manufacturer’s recommended 15-second maximum. ICE already uses WRAP full-body restraints during deportations, while DHS civil-rights reviewers questioned ICE training and policies governing their use in 2023. Associated Press reporters identified 12 restraint-associated deaths in local police or jail custody during the preceding decade.

ICE personnel have already used substantial physical force against people restrained or driven to the ground. In December 2025, video showed an agent pinning a woman face-down in Minneapolis snow and dragging her through the street. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said ICE personnel did not appear to take steps to de-escalate before the confrontation.

ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents tackled 79-year-old U.S. citizen Rafie Ollah Shouhed at his Van Nuys car wash on September 9, 2025. The takedown broke Shouhed’s ribs, damaged his elbow, and caused chest trauma accompanied by symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Agents then detained the wounded elderly citizen for 12 hours despite the serious physical harm. Shouhed was released without charges and taken to a hospital for treatment.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement cut more than 240 academy hours, or 40 percent, during the 2025–2026 hiring surge, reducing firearms, legal, fitness, and scenario instruction. Former academy instructor Ryan Schwank testified that recruits could commit unjustified force, mishandle firearms, and still graduate. The agency dismissed at least 200 recruits while background investigations remained incomplete or delayed, Reuters reported. ICE restored 71-day academy classes on July 1, 2026.

ICE admitted personnel into federal law-enforcement training before uncovering disqualifying information. Officials identified two Georgia trainees as suspected MS-13 members, based on their tattoos. The agency fired at least five others only after finding active arrest warrants.

Newly hired personnel also received enforcement assignments before ICE completed required background investigations. AP found hires carrying firearms and exercising federal arrest powers while screening remained unfinished. Andrew Penland joined the agency after a county insurer paid $75,000 to settle a lawsuit alleging that he falsely arrested a woman on a felony charge. Two additional hires faced lawsuits alleging unlawful or excessive force.

Associated Press reporters examined ICE officer David Brouillette’s history. Relatives said Brouillette had serious mental-health problems since childhood and should never have received a badge and gun. Several relatives described longstanding violence toward women; one gave AP a voicemail threatening to slit her throat. AP reporters could not determine the circumstances surrounding Brouillette’s hiring.

Associated Press reporters identified at least 24 ICE employees and contractors charged with crimes since 2020; courts convicted at least 17. Prosecutors brought cases involving physical violence, sexual abuse, corruption, and criminal misuse of federal power. AP reporters found some of the gravest criminal conduct among veteran ICE employees and supervisors rather than new recruits.

On July 7, 2026, an ICE officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. Six days later, an ICE officer fatally shot 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. Relatives identified Brouillette as Durán Guerrero’s shooter; AP reporters said Brouillette acknowledged the shooting to family members.

Stephen Miller, President Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security advisor, raised ICE’s daily arrest target from 1,000 to 3,000 in May 2025. Miller directed ICE leadership to arrest anyone without legal status. By July 2026, officials were told 2,000 daily arrests was the new enforcement standard. DHS reported about 51,000 July arrests, ICE’s highest monthly total.

ICE agents and officers use the term “bodies” as shorthand for people they apprehend and process. Miller’s numerical quota converts those bodies into a daily count. The quota, therefore, recasts each person ICE pursues as a “mark” whose capture moves the agency toward its target.

The Department of Homeland Security will place a potentially lethal electroshock weapon in the hands of ICE agents enforcing arrest quotas. The same hand that forcibly seizes a human “target” can send electrical current through the body at the tap of a button, After documented failures in screening, training, and firearms judgment, DHS will give thousands of agents immediate control over a weapon that can turn a touch into blindness, cardiac arrest, or death.

Two centuries later, civil plaintiffs are asking federal courts to impose liability on private immigration-detention contractors for alleged forced labor and medical neglect.

ICE is building a larger detention system just as private contractors face growing civil exposure for the horrors occurring inside.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is expanding detention contracts as federal courts narrow the defenses GEO Group and CoreCivic invoke against civil damages. Each contractor-controlled policy can widen liability for GEO Group and CoreCivic. Private detention operator LaSalle and detention medical contractor Wellpath also face potential liability for practices their personnel control.

GEO Group, CoreCivic, and other contractors face potential civil liability for practices their personnel independently control. Federal judges distinguish federal authorization from corporate responsibility while examining decisions made by contractor personnel. Meanwhile, the Trump administration directs additional detention work and federal funding to private companies. ICE’s average daily detained population increased 71 percent between January 20, 2025, and April 1, 2026. Detainees and families allege forced labor, disability violations, medical neglect, force, and custodial deaths.

The federal government increased spending as detention capacity expanded. In February 2025, ICE awarded GEO a 15-year contract for the 1,000-bed Delaney Hall facility, which GEO valued at $1 billion. CoreCivic expanded ICE capacity in 2025 and reported $261.3 million in first-quarter 2026 ICE revenue, nearly double the prior year. ICE awarded CoreCivic a five-year contract that began August 11, 2026, at the 1,600-bed Prairie Correctional Facility. CoreCivic sold Prairie to DHS on August 4, 2026.

On July 6, 2026, Ulises Peña Lopez, his wife, and their five-year-old daughter sued the federal government, GEO, and CoreCivic over their treatment during detention. The plaintiffs allege that contractor personnel mocked his disabilities and denied mobility accommodations during more than six months of detention. They seek damages for alleged medical neglect and disability violations and attribute the challenged conduct directly to contractor personnel.

In Menocal v. GEO Group, former detainees at GEO’s Aurora immigration-detention facility allege that GEO required unpaid sanitation work. They also allege that GEO threatened sanctions that included up to 72 hours in solitary confinement. The plaintiffs separately challenge GEO’s dollar-a-day work program. The district court found that ICE did not direct GEO to create the challenged labor policies.

GEO sought to terminate Menocal before trial. On February 25, 2026, U.S. Supreme Court justices held that Yearsley provides a defense to liability, not immunity from suit. The justices also barred GEO from using an immediate appeal to terminate the litigation. Contractors claiming Yearsley protection must connect disputed conduct to lawful federal authorization and direction. Judges must determine who authorized and directed the disputed practice.

In Nwauzor v. GEO Group, detainees obtained $17.29 million in back pay under Washington law. Washington separately obtained $5.95 million for unjust enrichment. GEO agreed in its ICE contract to comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws. Judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit found that ICE did not participate in managing GEO’s work program. The Ninth Circuit affirmed the judgments on January 16, 2025.

GEO continued seeking U.S. Supreme Court review after the Ninth Circuit ruling. GEO’s petition remained pending on August 13, 2026, after Supreme Court justices requested the U.S. solicitor general’s views. The multimillion-dollar judgments therefore remained in force while GEO pursued Supreme Court review. CoreCivic and private detention operator LaSalle face litigation over labor practices contractors controlled. Plaintiffs accuse GEO of unlawful force and disability violations. Plaintiffs have also pursued claims involving deaths in custody, while Wellpath faces claims concerning medical care.

Federal officials also scrutinize detention contractors when officials document procurement failures or deficient performance. Owino v. CoreCivic remained active in May 2026. A federal judge scheduled a mandatory settlement conference for April 19, 2027. Former detainees at Georgia’s Irwin County Detention Center continue forced-labor claims against LaSalle in Barahona v. LaSalle Management Company.

In Hugo Gonzalez v. GEO Group, plaintiffs challenge GEO personnel’s use of force during a 2020 protest at the Adelanto immigration-detention facility. More than 50 previously sealed records entered the public record on July 10, 2026. Those records contain video and internal documents concerning GEO personnel’s use of chemical agents against detained people.

CoreCivic reached a financial settlement and received an evidentiary sanction in wrongful-death litigation. CoreCivic reached a confidential settlement with Kesley Vial’s estate in March 2026 after Vial died following a suicide attempt at the Torrance County facility. Before the settlement, a judge sanctioned CoreCivic for destroying video evidence. The judge authorized an adverse inference concerning the destroyed evidence.

Martin Vargas Arellano’s son reached a settlement with the United States and continued pursuing claims against GEO and detention medical contractor Wellpath. A May 16, 2025, amended complaint alleges that both companies failed to follow COVID protections and detention standards. GEO also faces a Colorado wrongful-death suit alleging that medical neglect caused Melvin Calero Mendoza’s death at GEO’s Aurora facility.

California regulators can impose direct financial costs without waiting for private damages verdicts. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) lists $104,510 in penalties against GEO’s Golden State Annex from a workplace-safety inspection opened June 15, 2022. Regulators still classified the enforcement case as open on August 13, 2026.

Federal officials imposed contracting consequences at the Camp East Montana detention facility without waiting for private litigation. They awarded Acquisition Logistics a $1.3 billion expedited contract to operate Camp East Montana, which opened in August 2025. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that Acquisition Logistics lacked detention experience. GAO investigators also documented serious performance failures after the facility began operating.

ICE terminated Acquisition Logistics’ contract for convenience in April 2026 and awarded contractor Amentum a new contract. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) permits default termination under § 49.402-1 when contractors fail to satisfy specified performance requirements. FAR §§ 9.407-2 and 9.406-2 establish separate evidentiary and seriousness standards for suspension and debarment.

Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduced H.R. 6397, the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act, on December 3, 2025. More than 100 House members, including Rep. Adam Smith, cosponsored the measure. The proposal would require annual unannounced inspections under enforceable detention standards.

A serious first violation could trigger a fine equal to at least 10 percent of contract value. Repeated breaches could require termination and end federal funding.

H.R. 6397 would also create a federal cause of action permitting compensatory damages. The legislation would prohibit new or extended private detention contracts and terminate existing agreements within three years. Democratic Sen. Cory Booker introduced companion Senate bill S. 3702 on January 27, 2026. Ten senators cosponsored that measure, including nine Democrats and Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders.

On August 13, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives consisted of 218 Republicans, 212 Democrats, one independent, and four vacancies. With 431 members seated, passage required 216 votes. Unanimous Democratic support still required four Republican votes, or three with the independent. GOP participation was therefore mathematically necessary for House passage.

The U.S. Senate had 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two independents. All 47 non-Republican senators still needed 13 Republican votes to reach the 60-vote cloture threshold. Conversely, 41 GOP senators could prevent cloture even if every other senator supported the legislation.

States cannot directly obstruct federal immigration-detention contracting, but private operators remain subject to generally applicable state law. On July 22, 2025, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit struck down New Jersey’s ban on private detention contracts because the prohibition regulated federal procurement itself. The Third Circuit held that federal supremacy protected federal contracting authority from state interference.

The Ninth Circuit confronted a different constitutional question in Nwauzor. Its judges allowed Washington’s generally applicable minimum-wage law to apply to GEO because federal law and GEO’s contract did not displace the requirement. New Jersey officials now rely on generally applicable state enforcement authority.

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport sued GEO on June 2, 2026, after Delaney Hall personnel obstructed health inspections. Delaney Hall personnel denied inspectors access to the medical unit and sleeping areas. Inspectors also could not enter bathing or toileting areas. GEO again denied inspectors full access on June 24, including access to the medical unit.

On August 7, Davenport announced an investigation by the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights into practices at Delaney Hall. Division investigators issued subpoenas examining whether actions or omissions by GEO employees violated detainees’ civil rights.

Colorado established a separate enforcement system after Governor Jared Polis signed House Bill 26-1276 (H.B. 26-1276) on June 4, 2026. Under the statute, Colorado officials may conduct public-health inspections and collect associated fees. State authorities may also enforce health and safety requirements, require reporting, and impose civil penalties for refusing access or violating state rules.

Illinois restricts where qualifying immigration-detention facilities may operate. California officials use inspections and municipal compliance requirements involving CoreCivic. Courts entered the Nwauzor judgments under Washington’s minimum-wage law. Oregon prohibits privately operated centers used for immigration detention.

Additional facilities place more operations under contractor control, including medical care and disability accommodations. Contractor managers also administer labor arrangements and impose discipline within detention facilities. Contractor managers separately control uses of force and maintain operational records. The Trump administration determines detention funding and awards federal detention contracts.

The U.S. Supreme Court barred GEO Group’s interlocutory appeal in Menocal over labor practices ICE did not direct. The Ninth Circuit affirmed $23.24 million in Nwauzor judgments because ICE did not manage GEO’s work program. In both cases, federal judges examined who controlled the challenged conduct when determining liability. As ICE awards additional contracts, GEO and CoreCivic control operations at additional facilities and incur additional potential liability.

As ICE detention expands and alleged abuses multiply, civil litigation against private detention contractors is likely to intensify.
