I like to choose a popular journal, if I’m giving you one, a publication that most writers desire. For the start of this summer, it’s Ploughshares, a longstanding, high quality publication from Emerson College that recently underwent a change of editors. Change of the base editors, that is, for it has always had the policy of employing guest editors, too. Even if an issue is guest edited, half of the work chosen comes from submissions, and even if a judge chooses an emerging writer, they are selecting from a bunch screened by the staff editors and their readers.

Founded in 1971 by DeWitt Henry and Peter O’Malley, and moved to Emerson College in 1989, Ploughshares is on its fourth masthead refresh: Jenny Molberg as editor-in-chief & poetry editor, Rachel Dillon, managing editor, Paul Harding, fiction editor, and Hanif Abdurraqib as the first …

Today I’m looking at journals that like writing that tracks, catalogues, maps, labels and represents: South 85 Journal in Spartanburg, South Carolina and DIAGRAM in Tucson, Arizona. I do often mention, with regard to poems, a “mapping/cataloguing” approach; it’s a term I settled on to describe what I’ve been reading so often, whether in its natural environment of narratives, or occasionally, in lyrics. Some might say meandering, or all over the place, but I see it as gathering, bringing to a point. Similarly, and in other approaches, tracking or listing is also employed in creative nonfiction and fiction.

Strong voice and sense of place are what most draw the interests of the editors at South 85 Journal. Run by the low-residency MFA program at Converse University, with Leslie Pietrzyk as editor, it is a semi-annual online journal publishing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews and bl…

Senior editor Amy Wright notes that she prizes “range—of form and perspective and most enjoys when threads of insight cross like throughways between,” and she imagines “the journal as a kind of agile vehicle capable of bouncing into wilderness areas, across farms and prairies, into the suburbs, and coming up to speed around urban centers.” The online journal is colorful and dynamic, with “cover” artworks, and images of authors and books in their News & Events section. Zone 3 is now a press, as well, with a first book award for poetry and a biennial creative nonfiction book award, each with $1,000 prize, publication, and a reading at the university. Both awards are on hiatus as the editors catch up with reading and train their new managing editor.

I’m reading through the current issue, vol. 39, issue 1. R. S. Deeren and Amy Wright are senior editors. Wright is also the nonfiction editor, and Deeren, the fiction editor. Stephanie Dugger is the poetry editor. Let’s begin with the poems, almost all of which appear as if typed on paper, in lettering that is different from the stories and essays.

“Little Silences” by Morgan Hamill is an inquisitive poem that suspects its answers, a what if narrative, and healing poem, closely observed, imagistic, and spread across the page. Writing about her body, Hamill quiets the field of herself, turns off the motor, and beckons the horses that are the little silences, her pain that may possibly have become endurable. “Observations of Vessel Activity” by Grace Mathews is a poem that details how a job is done, while the poet observes and connects other activity and ideas, and it has two equal sized stanzas. It’s a narrative instructive poem, an approach that’s gradually been gaining traction on the literary road. It works best when what we are learning how to do is only part of the poem: A night job checking the oil tankers and cargo ships amid bioluminescent organisms, while sailing on the only wind powered vessel to be seen at night, Mathews describes it all in a lyrical compact of stark metal and fluid nature, with concern for what is wrought by humans, and run without them. She is in the MFA program at San Diego State University.

The what-if in Hamill’s poem is like a flip side to the how-to in Mathews’, because in positing the questions, she tells us how she might be able to cope. Maybe you have poems that fit these interest. Both poets present a quiet scene that is huge. So does Amy Bagwell in her short poem “date/truck/gunrack”. Everything at Zone 3 has a setting, indoors or out, in mind or real. There are several poems in this issue that approach medical, health or pain subjects in different ways. Hamill has a second poem “Pre-op, 5:30 A.M.” You might also read “In the Post-Acute Care Unit of Mount Carmel Hospital in Haifa, Israel” by Anna Abraham Gassaway, and “Orpheus Waits in the ICU” by Adam Grabowski.

Subscribe now

Story interests run off the beaten path: fabulist, fantastic, futuristic, allegorical, unusual, judging by all six stories in this issue. Each approach offers the writer a way to speak of societal issues. Let’s start with “The Light in America” by Genevieve Abravanel, a time travel story focused on the return to present, as the lead researcher tries to define for the statistician—a woman who loves him—how America was different in the future, and why he needed to return. The sunlight did not expose him there, in a different America, where people did not elect the wrong president. “It fell on me differently.” And she cannot raise the millions to return him, because of who he is in present daylight: a black man in DC. It’s largely a story in dialogue, with the characters presented through speech, as they walk along a rainy street strewn with autumn leaves, making language the dominant element. There is also the highlight of words unspoken, and hesitancy to interrupt. The rain is another language, obscuring the sun in a present the researcher Henry, doesn’t want.

“Mermaid” by Frank Reilly manages to present a different take on the fable of a half woman, half fish coming to shore. This one has hairy legs and fish head, which scares away everyone, even the predators. She’s lonely until she meets someone who understands her: a duck-billed platypus. There’s a mutual attraction, impregnation. Reilly’s language has an underlying playfulness, and a registering of animal behavior and intellectual thought to the scenes. The doubling of species in the story has a familiar counterpart in contemporary society, and there’s this wish near the end: “If her child is every creature joined, maybe every creature will see itself reflected?”

Each story has an element of exposure and longing, and a strength in being together, even if briefly. You might also like to read “Spontaneous Combustion Goes to College” by Brett Biebel, and “Raptors in the Later Age” by Bryn Agnew.

Subscribe now

There are five pieces of nonfiction in this issue. I’m starting with “A Forager’s Guide to Love” by Heather Hawk, a weave of before and after of marriage and divorce, with references made to Samuel Thayer’s The Forager’s Harvest. Hawk forages edible plants, following the rules of care that her wilderness guide husband once ignored to his detriment, and ponders the way that neither one of them listened to her. She wishes there was a Thayer’s Guide to choosing lovers. The ramps become the metaphor for the way she should have triple checked her own feelings about marrying him, and listened to her body that grew pregnant with a uterine fibroid before she learned of his infidelity. This essay is rich with place and theme, and the sentences are detailed and direct, rather than poetic, though the whole first paragraph is a metaphor for her transformation to someone who knows who she is and what she’s doing.

A flash essay on perspective, chance, and lurking danger, “Roadside Markers” by Nicole Zimmerman, is also written in direct sentences that are structured with a bit of poetics, such as the refrain spoken by the man in the orange vest: “Another morning,” he says, nodding. “Each day is different”. And the ewe with one living and one dead lamb in the field near the roadside marker for a dead young girl that turns out to be the sister of Zimmerman’s 4th grade classmate. The refrain of man in orange vest and the woman walking her dog.

There’s also the essay “Recipe for Helga” by Madeleine Zadik, using a non-literary form (recipe) to narrate events, what’s known as “hermit crab” (named after the crustacean that uses a discarded shell for shelter). You are probably all familiar with that term already. I’ve only been familiar with the approach, not the nomenclature, such as Amy Newman’s poetry collection Dear Editor. Each of the other two essays are worth a read, too.

Thanks for reading, and subscribing to What Where, my readers. Do you think you’ve got something for Zone 3? They are a paying market, though how much is not indicated. The journal will re-open for submissions on August 15th and close on November 1st, so you do have time to consider it.

What Where: Literary Journals is a reader-supported publication. I’m sharing one: Reed Magazine, at San Jose State, California’s oldest literary journal. I’m pairing it with The Los Angeles Review. Both are annuals. But their typefaces are the size of sugar ants.

Reed Magazine publishes fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art, and only the poems are in a typeface you will need to magnify. Poems are smaller than prose, generally speaking, but they don’t need to get a complex. The journal began in 1867 as a pamphlet edited by students at California State Normal School, the precursor to San Jose State University. It kept going until 1948’s name change to commemorate successful Gold Rush miner James Reed, a surviving member of the Donner party, whose 500-acre land donation to the state is where the university resides. (While old, Reed falls between The North American Review, the nation’s oldest li…

I like how each set of guidelines could engender new work or provide acceptance for the current. For me, if reading journals does not do that, instead I wish I was a different kind of writer.

The inspiration for After the Art came when the editor, Randon Billings Noble, had read William Maxwell’s So Long, See You, Tomorrow right after viewing at a gallery the crime dioramas constructed by Frances Glessner Lee, from the 1940’s, under the title “The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death,” and found a sparse parallel to the book’s first chapter. She found that “reading after art” could expand both experiences.

Noble wants personal review essays that explore the ways reading can enrich the experience of looking at art. The writer must be actively present. Each essay must be about a piece of art — a painting, a photograph, a …

We’ll start with “Memories” by Brazilian author Fabiana Martínez. The dominant element of fiction, or the one that takes over the beginning paragraphs, is language, appropriately for an author who is a linguist with a degree in comparative lit. She begins with a quote from Plato, from Phaedrus, about how writing things will interfere with memory and turn them into reminders, and starts the story with dialogue and instructions. It’s a domestic story centered on a single character, Ted, whose wife of 42 years has just died in the hospital from an undetected tumor, but it is not a love story. It is a story of missed chances when doing the right thing. I like the tactile messages in the hands and the notes and the soul. Martínez’ prose style is straightforward in observations, speech and actions, and grows somewhat poetic deeper into the story.

The next story “On the Interpretation of Dreams” by Daniel Webre, is in the speaking voice of the main character trying to explain something that doesn’t make sense to him, but what he’s started to believe; it is as if in a monologue, therefore language dominant. It is also a single character story, and written in a direct or plainspoken prose style. A relationship story, with two parts to it—the one with his cousin in the dream as they work together to cut the pineapples with machetes in the field, and the one in waking life with Allison who isn’t on the same wavelength.

Both stories are subjective, and neither is long. The man in each story is trying to work out something that doesn’t compute; each man in the story was not simpatico with the woman he was with. One story is third person, the other first. But then there’s “Cold Uterus” by Ann Yuan, a Long Island writer. This one is first person yet is immediately engaged with the character, a woman who can’t get pregnant and believes the blaming terminology of her Chinese heritage—after all she’s always had cold hands and feet. She attempts to warm her entire reproductive system by drinking increasingly too hot water, causing physical injury, losing taste, and sense. A story of obsession with a result, real or imagined, this story has a domestic subject and a poetic prose style through much of it. What follows is “Two Syllables” by Virginia Laurie, a visual artist, who writes her unhappy story in images, a tinge fabulist to begin, getting more real as it gets worse. It’s a longer length than the others.

The first literary work on the home page I’m reading is the lyric essay “Interstice” by Kiy Pozzi, who lives in Rockford, Illinois. A cataloguing of interstices of light, sound, time, and grief felt, intangible and philosophical. Linguistic, too: “…and if something can fill the space, then the word’s definition must expand to hold it, becoming, too, a site, a transition, an opening or an aperture.” The flash lyric essay, “As the Sky Loses Its Blues” by E Townsend is two sensual paragraphs deftly playing with perspectives, clarity, religious disagreement, and the sun setting behind Pikes Peak and on her time left with her father. There’s also the longer essay “A-Okay” by Court Ludwick that is written as from the sense perceptions of young girl in trouble with her mother, and the conflicting messages she receives in return, of embrace and seize, A-ok and stop right now. There is a poetic darkening of intention and reaction as well as of daylight, and impending adolescence, with setting and action dominant. In each of these nonfiction pieces, the perspective is continually readjusted, whittled to an acceptance, even if that is, in two of them, for being unlike or unliked.

There is a lyric love poem, “This Morning Rendezvous” by John Grey, laid out in stanzas of uneven line lengths and number. The tender waking moments are physically observed, his before hers, taking in the scene. Another lyric “Parrotfish Eulogy” by scuba diver Courtney Hitson, is vivid with similes, and lets us kick alongside her undersea. It’s one line short of a sonnet. There’s also “October 13th” by Rachel White, that catalogues numerous losses, personal and humanitarian, and a sonnet on being twice visited by the mythic bird “Ka ‘Iwa ‘Alua,” by Oahu poet Eric Paul Shaffer.

Hawai’i Pacific Review uses Submittable, and it appears that their backlog of submissions has temporarily closed the portal. The submission window is August to February, which should give you plenty of time to write towards their interests or put finishing edits to current work.

Bamboo Ridge was founded in 1978 to publish literature by, for, and about Hawai’i’s people. They are a press and a journal with two volumes published each year: one issue of the journal and one book by a single author or an anthology focused on a special theme. While special attention is given to literature that reflects an island sensibility, Bamboo Ridge is broad in scope and embraces a variety of work from writers across the nation. Poet Cathy Song is the editor and she chooses a guest editor to for each issue. The guest editor of No. 126, the issue I have, was Victoria Nolan Kneubuhl, a well-known Honolulu playwright and novelist. Issue No. 128 that’s complete, and due in June, is co-edited by Song and Naomi Shihab Nye.

Bamboo Ridge gets its name from the fishermen lining the perimeter of the point at Halona with a multitude of bamboo fishing poles, and the journal uses the place for its name because fisherman casting lines every day without guarantee of success is symbolic of the writing life. In Kneubel’s introduction to Issue No. 126, she writes that she picked pieces of high technical quality that contained human resonance, a factor crucial to the literary arts and the wider world of art. She reflects on the time when she started writing forty years earlier when those in Hawai’i who wrote about who they were and where they came from were made to feel they were second class, and writers today are not, thanks to the community created by the people of Bamboo Ridge Press.

I can’t link to any content on the website, so I’ll have to give you excerpts and descriptions, then quote from others because too many images will weigh down this post. Out of the 37 writers published in No. 126, 25 identify as Hawaiian or resident at one time. There are stories and poems written in Pidgin English, others about the Japanese-Hawaiian populations in the islands, the Portuguese, the Chinese, and poems half in Hawaiian, half English. There are two short plays— “Tourist Shell Shock” by Sean Joseph Choo, which was developed and produced by The Skeleton Rep(resents) in New York City as part of their “Explore Modern Myth” short plays series. The characters are “TĀRO SMITHSONIAN: an arrogant colonizer. The type that buys land in exotic locales to build golf courses and resorts. Obsessed with Japanese culture. There is a hint of a comic book evil villain about him; MAMA HONU: A mama turtle;” three other turtle characters with different dispositions, a “DRAGON PRINCESS, who is a royal politician, and SHISA STEVEDORES AND BARTENDERS, laborers who work for the princess.” The other short play is “Dykes in Waiks” by Lee A. Tonuchi, and “stay one previous winnah of Kumu Kahua Theatre + Bamboo Ridge Press Go Try PlayWrite contest. The characters are “THE BRIDE, 22, a young country bumpkin from da Midwest. She stay wearing her wedding dress while seated on one barstool in one empty Waikīkī dive bar. She’s gently weeping while DA BARTENDER, 39, one surly, tattooed Local woman from Pālolo tries for ignore the annoying sobs. Da crying grows in intensity until finally DA BARTENDER slams one empty glass on da counter in front of THE BRIDE who snaps out of her pity party.”

The first story in the issue is “The Rules of Invisibility” by J. G. Alderburke. The way the story begins—a regular life scene in a park where a man new to the city has claimed the best spot and shows no inclination towards sharing it—you might expect it to be about something that goes wrong in that setting.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" He recognized no one, but more importantly, no recognized him.” However, this story changes into a category of story I refer to as “twisted domestic” two pages on, at the bottom, when Martin, the main character, who really wants nothing to do with anyone, hops out of the shower and becomes invisible. He’s alarmed at first, and he briefly reappears when someone he’s met before comes in contact with him, but after that he’s erased from view, and heads to the bank... The main elements on that first page are setting and theme, and the sentences use some metaphor and simile. Another story, “The Bad Things Happen at Night” by Don Mitchell, an anthropologist and writer who graduated from Hilo High on the Big Island and now lives in Ithaca, New York, is sections, and two time periods, including an historic May 1960 Tidal Wave, a soccer game in 2018, and a sexual assault. These dramatic layers, destructive waves, narrative stops and starts, voices present, remembered, and rediscovered, then spoken by another, makes language and storytelling the main structure and subject, with the silverswords setting secondary. Other texts and experiments are also of interest at Bamboo Ridge, such as with “Hawai’i Tourism Authority” by Chloe L.M. Balisacan, a four page story inside a Department of Agriculture plants and animals declaration form. This story also contains a few outcomes, following the possible stories of tourists or tech billionaires or surfers or homesick Hawaiians.

<a identity. There are forms, such as a“Laundry Room Haibun” by Juliet S. Kono. And there’s a cento “Otakaheya/In the beginning” by Donna Cate Henderson using lines from Layli Long-Soldier, Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Amanda Gorman, and others. (I’m on the fence about centos, and the lines pilfered from other poets even when cited, and especially when made into a beautiful lyric like this one. You can share your views on them in the comments.) It is, however, another piece of writing in this issue that contains other voices. An uplifting poem that I was content to read in this chaotic time.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
