1. What These Medications Do

• Sertraline (Zoloft) & Fluoxetine (Prozac): SSRIs (antidepressants) used for depression, generalized anxiety, panic disorders, and OCD.
  

• Lorazepam (Ativan), Clonazepam (Klonopin), & Diazepam (Valium): Benzodiazepines used for fast-acting relief of severe anxiety or panic attacks, sleep aids, and muscle relaxation (especially Valium).
  

• Hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax): An antihistamine typically used for allergies, but frequently used off-label as a non-habit-forming option for mild anxiety and sleep.
  

• Buspirone (Buspar): An anxiolytic taken daily for the long-term management of generalized anxiety disorder.
  

• Trazodone (Desyrel): A SARI antidepressant that is very commonly prescribed off-label as a nighttime sleep aid.
  

• Zolpidem (Ambien): A sedative-hypnotic used for the short-term treatment of insomnia.
  

• Mirtazapine (Remeron): An atypical antidepressant for depression and anxiety, often chosen because its sedating side effects help increase sleep and appetite.
  

• Quetiapine (Seroquel): An atypical antipsychotic for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, often used off-label for severe anxiety, sleep, or treatment-resistant depression.
  

• Lamotrigine (Lamictal): A mood stabilizer and anticonvulsant used for bipolar disorder (specifically preventing depressive episodes) and seizures.
  

• Amitriptyline (Elavil): A tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used for depression, but very commonly prescribed off-label in low doses (like 10 mg) for sleep, nerve pain, or migraine prevention.

2. What She Was Probably Taking Last (Late January 2023)

At the very end of this timeline, she was most likely taking this concurrent regimen:

• Diazepam (Valium) - 2 mg: Likely used as a daily maintenance dose for anxiety, replacing the Ativan and Klonopin prescribed earlier in the timeline.
  

• Trazodone (Desyrel) - 150 mg: An increased dose from earlier in the month, likely taken every night at bedtime for sleep.
  

• Amitriptyline (Elavil) - 10 mg: At this low dose, it was likely prescribed off-label for sleep maintenance, tension headaches, or chronic pain.
  

• Lamotrigine (Lamictal) - 25 mg (Potential Carry-Over): Since this medication requires a very slow titration to prevent side effects, a mid-December prescription was likely intended as a long-term maintenance drug rather than a short-term fix.

3. How These Medications Interacted

Given the volume of medications targeting the brain’s chemistry, there are significant potential interactions across the entire list, particularly within her final January regimen:

• Severe Central Nervous System (CNS) Depression: Stacking benzodiazepines (Valium, Ativan, Klonopin), hypnotics (Ambien), antipsychotics (Seroquel), and sedating antidepressants (Desyrel, Elavil, Remeron) creates additive CNS depression. This can cause extreme drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and impaired motor coordination.
  

• Serotonin Syndrome Risk: Taking multiple medications that increase serotonin—such as SSRIs (Zoloft, Prozac), Desyrel, Elavil, Remeron, and Buspar—significantly increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. This is a rare but serious condition that can cause high fever, muscle rigidity, shivering, and rapid heartbeat.
  

• Heart Rhythm Abnormalities (QT Prolongation): Elavil, Desyrel, and Seroquel can all affect the electrical signals in the heart. Using them together increases the risk of a dangerous irregular heartbeat known as QT prolongation.
  

• Seizure Threshold Reduction: Elavil can lower the seizure threshold. While Lamictal is an anticonvulsant that raises it, prescribing them together requires careful balancing and monitoring.

Healthcare has gotten very tied up in politics, and organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) have basically expanded the scope of healthcare beyond just disease and medical interventions - it’s now all about solving poverty as a means to improve health.

On a basic level, yes, we should strive to end poverty, because poverty does cause health problems. However, this goal gets stickier when it becomes tied to partisan politics, fingerpointing, and heavy-handed government responses such forced wealth redistribution.

Trump banned DEI in schools, yes? Well, in practice, this hasn’t really happened. DEI is so intertwined with everything that it shows up in the oddest places.

In the process of completing my degrees in education and instructional design, I have discovered that DEI and CRT (critical race theory) are still in schools, even at schools that aren’t particularly left-wing.

Look, I’m all in favor of non-political inclusivity, such that, if we are making an online course, we should try to be “inclusive” to people with common issues such as poor eyesight. I have poor eyesight. I get irked when graphics use teeny tiny fonts. It’s annoying.

So I don’t have a problem with an instructional design course talking about universal design principles that involve adding things like captions to videos.

Where I draw the line is when politics is thrown at us - specifically, weird, divisive, far-left racial politics that have zip all to do with my field all study. So far, I haven’t had to deal with too much of this. But then I just got hit with a doozy.
