Today, it can feel more like a barren expanse we scroll through aimlessly, searching for something, anything, worth watching. We crave a film or series gripping enough to make us forget our phones, ignore social media, and surrender completely to the story. The rarest titles leave us staring at the credits, hoping for one final scene to prolong the experience. Moments like these now feel exceptional. Once, they seemed to be the standard.

Although it may feel like ancient history, Beasts of No Nation was Netflix’s first original film. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring the incomparable Idris Elba, the war drama offered an unflinching look at child soldiers in West Africa. The film generated headlines, critical acclaim, and considerable awards buzz, but its day-and-date rollout also prompted a widespread boycott by major theater chains. Despite glowing reviews and a successful festival run, it failed to secure a major Oscar nomination. Critics and industry insiders fiercely debated whether its unconventional distribution strategy, and the resulting blacklist, had damaged its Academy prospects. Eleven years later, the tension between theatrical releases and streaming-first distribution remains unresolved.

For all its excesses, Netflix has retained its ability to discover, cultivate, and distribute award-worthy stories. Every so often, the media giant, now operating much like a traditional studio in pursuit of industry prestige, delivers something genuinely distinctive and surpasses expectations. This creative spark appears more frequently in serialized storytelling, with titles such as Bridgerton, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Money Heist. Yet occasionally, an original film breaks through with the same force.

The distribution landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade, and Netflix films have become fixtures in the Oscar race. All Quiet on the Western Front won Best International Feature, Roma and The Power of the Dog earned Best Director honors, and Marriage Story took home Best Supporting Actress.

Like Beasts of No Nation, David Fortune’s directorial debut, Color Book, built momentum through a successful festival run before arriving on the platform on Father’s Day. Netflix had every reason to feel confident about this remarkable portrait of a father’s devotion to his disabled son. Despite not receiving the widespread attention it deserves, Color Book is one of the year’s best films and should be a serious awards contender.

A Cinematic Masterpiece Hiding in Plain Sight

David Fortune’s Color Book is an intimate, soulful tour de force anchored by phenomenal performances from William Catlett and Jeremiah Alexander Daniels. With its patient, deeply affecting portrayal of the sacred bond between father and son, this Atlanta odyssey ranks among the finest films of its kind.

Lucky (Catlett), a widower, is struggling to raise his son, Mason (Daniels), who has Down syndrome. Seeking comfort, the grieving pair set out across Metro Atlanta to attend their first baseball game together. Car trouble, missed train connections, and a string of other setbacks test their relationship over a day seemingly governed by Murphy’s Law. Each obstacle only strengthens their determination to reach the stadium.

Fortune crafts a rare cinematic gem and gives its emotional power room to unfold. The film’s greatest strength lies in its gentle treatment of painful themes, balancing quiet sensitivity with a refusal to offer easy answers. Working in striking black and white, cinematographer Nikolaus Summerer captures the city’s textures, rhythms, and sensory details, honoring a place too often reduced to clichés. Fortune allows the camera to linger on moments of conflict and calm revelation, intensifying their impact without relying on heavy dialogue.

At its heart, Color Book is a heartbreaking story of grief and perseverance, steeped in both place and emotion. Fortune makes Lucky and Mason’s journey increasingly fraught, but each delay also reveals their capacity for patience, adaptability, and grace. The recurring image of a lone balloon becomes an elegant metaphor for love, loss, and the desire to hold on to cherished memories for as long as possible.

Fortune understands how sorrow settles into daily routines and how difficult the path toward healing can be. Two magnificent performances deepen the emotional force of his profoundly empathetic story. Catlett is brilliant as Lucky, a father trying to rebuild a sense of stability for his son while learning to accept support from friends who understand their circumstances. Daniels is a revelation, conveying immense feeling with a single glance and making every brief line of dialogue resonate.

Like the finest films about ordinary people enduring with quiet strength, little appears to happen in Color Book, yet everything feels consequential. Fortune shares the remarkable ability of storytellers such as Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, and Sean Baker to illuminate lives society too often sidelines, neglects, or overlooks. The result is a moving tribute to selfless love, steadfast devotion, and the communities that help disadvantaged families carry on.

Expanding Disability Representation Through Care and Connection

By centering a widowed Black man and his son with Down syndrome, Color Book dismantles stereotypes surrounding caregiving, masculinity, and disability representation. David Fortune strips away visual excess to focus on the pair’s vulnerability, loyalty, and unbreakable bond, a relationship rarely afforded this degree of complexity on screen.

Fortune wrote and directed the film as an ode to Black fatherhood, challenging harmful cultural myths by portraying Lucky as loving, present, and emotionally open. According to Film Independent, Fortune worked as a camp counselor for teenagers with Down syndrome while in college, where he witnessed the distinctive ties between parents and their children. Those experiences later inspired him to tell Lucky and Mason’s story.

Rather than treating disability as inherently tragic or reducing it to the film’s sole concern, Color Book presents Down syndrome as part of everyday life. Lucky and Mason are allowed to exist as complex central characters rather than symbols or supporting devices. In doing so, the film seamlessly incorporates disability into universal themes of love, grief, family, and perseverance.

The film has drawn strong praise for its resonance with Black men and disability advocates alike. Organizations such as The Arc of California have organized screenings to encourage conversations about inclusion. Yet its emotional reach extends far beyond any single community. Whether or not viewers are parents, live with a disability, or have endured the devastating loss of someone close, Color Book offers a deeply moving and satisfying experience. It feels almost too intimate and handcrafted for the relentless churn of streaming, and precisely like the kind of film these platforms should champion more often.

Netflix can still give emerging filmmakers the resources to create extraordinary art. While writing the screenplay, Fortune applied for the Netflix-sponsored Film Independent Amplifier Fellowship and was accepted in 2023. Using funding from the fellowship, he created a pitch video that helped secure his place in the AT&T Untold Stories competition. Winning the competition brought a $1 million award to finance the production.

Color Book is an exquisitely crafted, emotionally resonant independent drama that masterfully blends pain, beauty, and hope. It demonstrates the capacity of streaming platforms to support meaningful stories worthy of broader recognition and prestigious honors. A decade from now, Color Book may be remembered as a stunning cinematic achievement that took awards season by surprise.

Pat, the famously androgynous Saturday Night Live figure created and performed by Julia Sweeney, became a fixture of 1990s pop culture. Appearing in a series of prominent recurring sketches from 1990 to 1994, Pat eventually spun off into the feature film It’s Pat, which Quentin Tarantino reportedly helped revise. Long before the term “nonbinary” entered mainstream conversation, Pat was one of television’s most visible gender-ambiguous personas, and the joke almost always depended on other people’s discomfort, confusion, and cruelty.

At the height of Pat’s popularity, SNL was still a dominant force in broadcast television, drawing millions of viewers in an era before streaming fragmented the audience. For many, the frequent bit became must-see comedy. For others, especially gender-nonconforming viewers, it was something more complicated: a rare glimpse of recognition filtered through ridicule.

For much of the 1990s, Pat functioned as a strange and imperfect stand-in for nonbinary visibility on television. Sweeney’s creation never publicly identified as LGBTQ+, and Pat’s refusal to disclose their gender often left young queer and trans viewers caught between fascination and alienation. Decades later, as America remains fixated on policing gender and punishing difference, filmmaker Ro Haber’s documentary We Are Pat revisits this complicated comedy persona with curiosity, honesty, and care.

Through sharp, candid conversations with queer, trans, and nonbinary comedians and writers, Haber transforms Pat from a punchline into a point of reckoning. The film does not erase the harm of the original sketches, but it refuses to leave Pat frozen in the past. For Haber, Pat has always been complicated. The sketches offered an unsettling form of recognition, even as they weaponized gender ambiguity for laughs. That tension becomes the emotional engine of We Are Pat, a deeply personal project that reconsiders Pat through the lens of contemporary queer and trans identity. With Sweeney’s participation, Haber invites a collective reckoning with Pat’s cultural impact, asking whether a once-wounding joke can be reinterpreted, reclaimed, or transformed.

Visually, We Are Pat leans into a ’90s-inspired aesthetic, blending archival footage, pop-art flourishes, and playful nostalgia with keen critical distance. The evolution of gender identity and comedy in American performance.

Pat arrived in 1990s pop culture at a moment when Saturday Night Live, and much of mainstream comedy, was still largely shaped by cisgender men. But gender play has always been central to American performance, from underground drag balls and vaudeville stages to ballroom culture, television, and stand-up.

One of the earliest known figures in that lineage was William Dorsey Swann, often cited as the first self-described “queen of drag,” who hosted secret drag balls in Washington, DC, in the late 19th century. By the early 20th century, vaudeville had also become a major space for gender-bending performance, giving audiences in the United States and Canada a theatrical language for queerness long before the modern gay rights movement.

That tradition gained new visibility during the Pansy Craze of the late 1920s and early 1930s, when drag and gender-nonconforming performers became fixtures of nightlife in cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Stars like Gene Malin drew straight audiences into queer performance spaces, but the backlash that followed Prohibition-era nightlife and Hollywood moral policing pushed many of these acts back underground.

In the 1970s and 1980s, drag and ballroom culture became especially vital within Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities. Harlem’s ballroom scene developed its own vernacular, hierarchies, houses, and performance categories, many of which reached wider audiences through Jennie Livingston’s Paris Is Burning. Terms such as “shade,” “reading,” and “voguing” entered broader pop culture through the film’s depiction of a world built on chosen family, competition, style, and survival.

Another mainstream breakthrough came with RuPaul, whose 1990s celebrity helped bring drag into music videos, talk shows, and major advertising campaigns. Years later, RuPaul’s Drag Race transformed drag from a subcultural art form into a global entertainment franchise, introducing new generations to the style, spectacle, and business of drag.

Comedy has continued to expand beyond the cisgender gaze. Performers such as Sabrina Wu, Murray Hill, and Roz Hernandez bring queer, trans, and gender-nonconforming perspectives to the stage on their own terms, turning lived experience into sharp, self-authored comedy. Queer-led and T4T spaces now offer safer environments where LGBTQ+ performers can challenge cultural assumptions, confront political backlash, and transform shared frustration into collective laughter.

Reclaiming a complicated comedy legacy to imagine a more inclusive future.

Beyond comedy, We Are Pat raises uncomfortable questions: How does art age? What responsibility does a creator have when cultural values shift? Can a joke that once reduced people to a punchline be reclaimed, turning pain into humor, anonymity into recognition, and ridicule into self-definition?

It is perhaps too easy, to judge Pat solely by today’s standards. A sketch built around mocking androgyny or gender ambiguity would likely face immediate backlash now. Haber, however, takes a more nuanced approach, recontextualizing a once-problematic comedy persona through a contemporary queer and trans lens.

Sweeney’s performance has drawn significant criticism from LGBTQ+ viewers and commentators, especially as conversations about trans and nonbinary visibility have deepened. Haber does not dismiss that harm, but they also refuse a simple verdict. For them, Pat held two truths at once: offensive and oddly liberating, wounding and validating. That paradox gives the film its emotional force, challenging the rigid binaries queer and trans people have so often been forced to navigate.

We Are Pat thoughtfully explores the uneasy gap between intention and impact. It suggests that comedy is most powerful when rooted in respect, context, and shared understanding. Rather than closing with an easy answer, Haber and their collaborators leave viewers with a more provocative thought: What happens when a figure once used to mock gender ambiguity becomes something queer audiences can claim, complicate, and remake for themselves?

Venezuelan-American artist Miguel Angel Ferrer makes his directorial debut with The Shadow of the Sun, Venezuela’s submission for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. Ferrer also co-wrote, co-produced, and edited the project, giving the deeply personal drama a distinctive creative imprint.

The story follows a blue-collar worker and his deaf younger brother as they pursue an improbable musical dream. At a time when authentic representation remains essential, Ferrer’s sentimental melodrama gives disabled and queer characters the space to move beyond the limitations imposed on them and step fully into the light.

Alex (Anyelo Lopez), a deaf young man living in the inland Venezuelan city of Acarigua, works at a bakery while writing music of his own. He persuades his older brother, Leo (Carlos Manuel Gonzalez), a factory worker with a long-dormant gift for singing, to enter a major competition in Caracas. Alex believes Leo’s voice could ease their financial struggles while fulfilling his own dream of hearing, or more precisely, seeing his brother perform one of his original songs. Reaching that stage, however, will test Alex’s ambitions and both brothers’ resilience in a community that offers little room for difference.

Venezuela’s severe socioeconomic conditions intensify Alex and Leo’s struggle against debt, disenfranchisement, and daily hardship. Leo possesses undeniable musical talent, yet his circumstances have taught him to suppress it. Alex, despite being unable to hear, channels his fierce determination into composition, ultimately teaching his hearing brother what it truly means to have a voice.

Their relationship gradually shifts as well. Leo begins as Alex’s protector, but over time, Alex becomes the one pulling his brother through despair. Years of emotional upheaval test their loyalty without breaking it, even when communication proves difficult. The journey to Caracas becomes more than a trip to a music competition. Every setback tests their resolve, while each small victory becomes an act of defiance against circumstances that have repeatedly told them to expect less.

Ferrer drew on his own perseverance and personal history while shaping Alex and Leo’s story. Born in Venezuela, he moved to Miami as a teenager and began his career as a cameraman for National Geographic before building an 18-year creative path across advertising, television, and cinema. His work has earned more than 14 festival honors, including the Audience Feature Film Award at the 41st Miami Film Festival for The Shadow of the Sun, a particularly meaningful recognition in the city he came to call home.

Although Ferrer had returned to Venezuela only once since leaving, on a trip in 2007, he maintained a profound connection to his homeland. Speaking with Canvas Rebel, he described The Shadow of the Sun as the greatest professional risk he had taken:

In this stirring underdog story, Ferrer pursues three clear ambitions: reconnecting with his Venezuelan roots, challenging narrow portrayals of Latino communities, particularly men, and expanding how communication is represented on screen.

Speaking with WLRN Public Media, Ferrer described his deep emotional connection to the plains of Acarigua and the surrounding landscape. What struck him most was the resilience of the people who lived there, especially their ability to preserve joy and hope despite the struggles woven into daily life.

Ferrer also set out to challenge familiar screen depictions of Latin America. Although many communities face profound socioeconomic and political strife, international storytelling too often reduces them to cycles of trauma, violence, and victimhood. Ferrer wanted something different: an uplifting story in which its characters retain agency and ultimately become the heroes of their own lives.

By centering a deaf, gay character, he also sought to portray intersecting identities with care and dignity. Rather than frame Alex’s journey as a conventional coming-out narrative, Ferrer approaches marginalization through a more universal desire: the need to find one’s voice and be understood.

Leo and Alex’s tender, mutually supportive relationship also gives the story room to confront machismo and rigid ideas of masculinity. Ferrer contrasts hardened street behavior with emotional openness, revealing how deeply the brothers depend on one another. Although Alex has been deaf his entire life, Leo is not fluent in Venezuelan Sign Language (LSV). Instead, the two have developed their own rhythm of communication through Alex’s lip-reading and Leo’s understanding of his brother’s signing, reinforcing the intimacy of their bond.

Ultimately, Ferrer tells a story about emerging from the margins, confronting prejudice, and finding the courage to express oneself. Rooted in a distinctly Venezuelan perspective, The Shadow of the Sun reaches beyond its setting through themes of redemption, exclusion, bullying, artistic purpose, and the universal search for belonging and meaning.

Great Cinema Transcends Borders, Languages, and Cultures

With a quiet, understated style, The Shadow of the Sun examines alienation, self-worth, and the courage to pursue ambitions that seem beyond reach. Ferrer turns an intimate story into a compelling example of international cinema’s ability to make culturally specific experiences feel urgent and universal.

Music becomes the story’s common language, giving its characters a means of expression when words fall short. Ferrer captures the Venezuelan countryside, its people, and its culture with warmth, balancing the exhaustion of daily adversity against an enduring capacity for hope, imagination, and joy.

The title takes on deeper meaning when Alex explains that everything in the solar system casts a shadow except the sun, though something even brighter could eclipse it. The metaphor reflects the brothers’ gradual emergence into the light as Ferrer challenges inherited expectations surrounding masculinity, sexuality, and self-expression.

Its straightforward premise may initially suggest a conventional sentimental drama, but The Shadow of the Sun proves far more affecting. Despite occasional predictability, the story succeeds as an uplifting crowd-pleaser with genuine emotional weight and meaningful representation.

Gonzalez brings warmth and sharp comic timing to Leo, while deaf newcomer Lopez delivers a deeply moving, grounded performance as Alex. Together with the striking cinematography, their natural chemistry gives the story an authenticity and immediacy that larger productions often struggle to achieve.

Ferrer deftly balances darkness and light without minimizing Venezuela’s economic and social tribulations. Yet his greatest affection is reserved for music itself, from the raw energy of Leo’s rock performances to the rhythms spilling into the streets of Acarigua. Sound becomes more than atmosphere. It represents freedom, possibility, and the desire to be heard.

Limited in scale but expansive in meaning, The Shadow of the Sun celebrates brotherhood, acceptance, and the courage to live authentically rather than according to someone else’s expectations. By bringing marginalized voices into focus, Ferrer allows Leo and Alex to question the rigid masculinity they inherited and imagine something more compassionate in its place.

The story also contributes to the preservation of queer experiences that regional histories have too often ignored. By placing these lives visibly on screen, Ferrer encourages conversation, broadens awareness, and challenges entrenched attitudes toward sexual and gender diversity in conservative communities. For young viewers and other underrepresented audiences, that visibility can offer something equally important: the chance to see their circumstances, aspirations, and victories treated as worthy of recognition.

Rooted in the belief that cinema is richer when more voices are represented, Widening the Lens highlights six remarkable underseen films that illuminate the untold histories of historically marginalized communities.

Established by the UN in 1994 and observed each August, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples raises global awareness of the rights, cultures, and contributions of nearly 476 million people across 90 countries. Cinema remains one of the most powerful ways to explore the observance’s central themes: self-determination, environmental protection, and the preservation of distinct cultures and languages.

Historically, women from Native and First Peoples communities have been severely underrepresented in creative film and television roles, including writing, directing, and cinematography. Data from national reports, including Canadian Women in View, shows that while approximately 40% of film directors are women, BIPOC women make up only 10%, while women from Indigenous communities account for less than 1%.

That same troubling pattern is visible on screen in the United States. According to a USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study, 99% of the top films reviewed did not include a single Native American female character who spoke or was named. With 77% of Native American on-screen roles filled by men, Native women and girls remain drastically disadvantaged, and their projects are too often limited to the lowest-budget productions.

Despite these systemic barriers, women directors are helping drive a resurgence in Indigenous screen sovereignty. Through authentic, community-centered storytelling, their films dismantle harmful stereotypes such as the “Pocahontas” figure and the “savage” caricature while asserting creative control both on screen and behind the camera.

Widening the Lens aims to spotlight these torchbearers, whose work preserves cultural traditions, languages, and oral histories across genres, generations, and time periods. With striking clarity, they confront urgent contemporary issues, from environmental activism to persistent discrimination, while affirming the relevance, complexity, and self-determination of First Peoples.

Beyond cultural preservation, their films demonstrate cinema’s remarkable capacity to build empathy. These visionary filmmakers are reshaping how Native communities are represented, moving beyond superficial clichés and 19th-century frontier myths to portray people as complex, fully realized individuals: teachers, doctors, scientists, artists, leaders, and women whose voices resonate around the world.

Coming-of-age stories where innocence collides with institutional violence.

Beans, 2020

In Beans, Kanien’kéhaka (Mohawk) filmmaker Tracey Deer draws from her own childhood to tell a searing coming-of-age story about innocence shattered too soon. Set during Quebec’s 1990 Oka Crisis, the film follows a young girl as she confronts anti-Indigenous racism, reconsiders what strength means, and begins to understand her own cultural identity.

During the summer of 1990, the Mohawk community of Kanesatake protested the proposed expansion of a local golf course onto ancestral land and sacred burial sites. The result was a violent 78-day standoff that became known as the Oka Crisis.

The story follows 12-year-old Beans (Kiawentiio), whose traditional name is Tekehentahkhwa. Naïve, joyful, and optimistic, she is quickly drawn into the escalating conflict. As the standoff intensifies, Beans is forced to grow up fast, losing pieces of her childhood as she comes to terms with the brutal realities facing First Nations communities in Canada.

Beans directly exposes the everyday violence of settler colonialism, xenophobia, and anti-Indigenous discrimination. Deer anchors the film in the resilience of women who sustain their communities, join the struggle, and shield their families from danger. With the clarity of a survivor reopening an old wound, she delivers an impassioned plea for recognition, respect, and her people’s right to defend their land, heritage, and way of life.

Warrior Women, 2018

As a community of interconnected families, the American Indian Movement (AIM) fought for Native liberation in the 1970s with proud, unapologetic force. Warrior Women chronicles the often-overlooked women who helped drive that struggle, centering Madonna Thunder Hawk, an Oohenumpa Lakota activist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation.

Co-directors Elizabeth Castle and Christina D. King, an enrolled member of the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma, show how Thunder Hawk guided fellow activists and their children, including her daughter Marcy, in resisting forced assimilation and cultural erasure. Thunder Hawk created the “We Will Remember” Survival School as a community-led alternative to government-run education. Over time, she and Marcy became comrades as much as mother and daughter. Today, with Marcy now a mother herself, both remain prominent advocates, protecting their cultural heritage and confronting environmental threats, including the damage caused by the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Using a circular Indigenous storytelling style, Warrior Women reflects on the difficult balance between activism and motherhood. Thunder Hawk recalls the legacy of Red Power matriarchs while describing what it meant to raise a child amid a heavily policed, government-opposed fight for Native rights. The film also reveals the heavy toll that sustained struggle can take on the children who grow up witnessing it.

Warrior Women offers an inspiring portrait of intergenerational resistance, grassroots organizing, and resilience. It makes clear that women, though too often overlooked by media and historians, were the driving force behind AIM’s fight for justice. The film shows how Thunder Hawk helped redefine activism, carrying her lifelong work from local communities to a global stage, including the United Nations.

Native women filmmakers are blazing a trail, but visibility remains the hardest fight.

Indigenous women are creating extraordinary films in record numbers, but visibility is proving to be a considerable challenge. Even after overcoming institutional barriers to get their stories made, many of these projects remain difficult to watch because reliable release pathways are still limited.

Award-winning films like Kathleen Hepburn and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open and Jalena Keane-Lee’s Standing Above the Clouds are available solely on Kanopy. Paige Bethmann’s Remaining Native screened exclusively through The Popcorn’s List’s limited pop-up, with future VOD availability still uncertain.

Organizations such as the Indigenous Screen Office (ISO), Native Women in Film and Television, The Sundance Institute Indigenous Program, and imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival provide vital mentorship, funding, and industry support for Native-led productions. Brown Girls Doc Mafia and Women Make Movies also play an important role in helping these films reach wider audiences.

Still, Hollywood’s entrenched barriers make discovery difficult. Major studios and streaming platforms have long underestimated the audience for Native-led stories, leaving many independent filmmakers without the marketing power or release infrastructure needed to reach viewers at scale.

Yet these filmmakers continue to claim narrative sovereignty, often shaping their work from script to screen while forging their own paths to audiences. Watching and sharing these films sends a clear message: their stories matter, their artistry deserves support, and the audience for this work is already here.

One Hundred Years of Solitude (Spanish: Cien años de soledad), 2024-2026

José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, Albatros González, and María Camila Arias helped shape this sweeping adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 masterpiece. Spanning 16 chapters, the epic traces seven generations of the Buendía family in the mythical Colombian town of Macondo, where magical wonders, forbidden romances, civil war, and an inherited curse bind the family to a seemingly endless cycle of solitude.

Determined to preserve the novel’s Latin American identity, the production was filmed entirely in Colombia and performed in Spanish with the support of García Márquez’s family. His sons, Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, also serve as executive producers.

José Arcadio Buendía (Diego Vásquez) and his wife, Úrsula Iguarán (Marleyda Soto Ríos), leave their village behind to build a utopian community. As generations pass, war, political upheaval, and foreign exploitation begin to erode Macondo’s innocence. The Buendías grow increasingly isolated, consumed by recurring obsessions and haunted by an incestuous curse that threatens to condemn their lineage to “one hundred years of solitude.”

The saga unfolds across two parts and a concluding special. Part 1, which premiered on December 11, 2024, follows Macondo’s founding, its first encounters with the outside world, and the outbreak of civil war. The first seven episodes of Part 2 arrive on August 5, 2026, introducing the railroad, rapid industrialization, and an exploitative foreign banana company that places the town’s future in jeopardy. A feature-length grand finale concludes the adaptation on August 26.

As their bond intensifies, the two are drawn into a blood-soaked world of psychosexual desire and delirium, forcing Kris to confront deep insecurities surrounding her body, sexuality, and sense of identity.

Schoenbrun delivers a heartfelt tribute to 1980s horror while examining how genre and popular culture influence self-perception and sexual awakening. It follows three American physicians from distinctly different backgrounds as they travel to Gaza to provide emergency care during the conflict: Dr. Mark Perlmutter, a Jewish American orthopedic surgeon from North Carolina; Dr. Thaer Ahmad, a Palestinian American emergency physician from Chicago; and Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, a California trauma surgeon of Zoroastrian heritage. Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis serves as their primary base of operations, both before and after the 2025 ceasefire.

Teng captures the brutal immediacy of operating rooms under siege. Despite their different backgrounds and temperaments, the doctors are united by their oath to treat the wounded. The documentary then follows them home, shifting from Gaza’s devastated hospitals to the halls of Congress and the national media, where they confront the political consequences of bearing witness. Unflinching and sobering, American Doctor exposes the collapse of healthcare in a war zone and the efforts of physicians and journalists to make those conditions visible, including allegations that medical facilities were deliberately targeted.

After losing her adjunct teaching position in Los Angeles, Z (Denée Benton) sets out with friends Tasha (Sasha Compère) and Lauren (Dezi Bing) to find their missing friend, Kel (Mars Rucker), who has vanished without explanation. Their uncertain journey across the Midwest forces the four queer Black women, all in their mid-thirties, to confront questions of belonging, relationships, and their place in the world. What begins as a search gradually becomes a cathartic path toward healing and self-discovery.

Ford’s subversive reimagining of the classic American road movie becomes a moving meditation on community, unconventional bonds, and the longing for a safer, gentler world. She confronts the sobering realities of life as a Black queer femme in America while celebrating the loving communities formed in response. Dreams in Nightmares is generous, warm, and deeply humane. Rejecting restrictive notions of family rooted solely in blood, the film presents chosen kinship as a life-sustaining force and honors the tenderness, joy, and profound interdependence of queer friendship.

The Wrong Girls is a wildly psychedelic, female-led cannabis caper that occupies a space Hollywood rarely makes room for. Its stacked ensemble includes LaKeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Zack Fox, Kate McKinnon, and Geena Davis, while Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani voice a pair of talking cats. Beneath the absurdity, the film celebrates unruly, free-spirited women and the friendships that sustain them, suggesting that loyalty may be the only thing capable of keeping life from spinning completely out of control.

Recently, we saw the release of two incredible films: I Love Boosters by Boots Riley and Is God Is by Aleshea Harris. Both wildly original stories showcase formidable Black women delivering retribution through bold, unexpected means. They call back to classic revenge tales, but with a fierce, female-centric lens.

With so many excellent revenge films to choose from, I’m looking forward to hearing your four favorite stylish revenge movies starring women who settle the score with flair. To get the discussion started, here are Widening the Lens’ top four picks, where revenge is served with a generous helping of bloody action.

Nikita or La Femme Nikita, 1990

Convicted of murdering a policeman during a pharmacy heist, Marie Clément (Anne Parillaud) is sentenced to life in prison. Instead, her government handlers fake her death and remake her into Nikita, a lethal professional assassin. After brutal training, she begins a new life in the shadows, struggling to reconcile her violent work with the personal life she tries to build after falling for a man who knows nothing about her secret existence.

Luc Besson’s French action-thriller helped pioneer the “girl with a gun” archetype and reshaped the genre’s mainstream appeal. By centering a cold-blooded female killer, the film flipped the damsel-in-distress trope on its head and paved the way for more complex female-led action movies from major studios for generations to come.

Lady Vengeance (also released as Sympathy for Lady Vengeance; Korean: 친절한 금자씨; Chinjeolhan Geumjassi), 2005

For thirteen years, Lee Geum-ja (Lee Yeong-ae) has been imprisoned for a crime she did not commit. During that time, she has dreamed of revenge against those who wronged her, including the police officer who coerced her confession and the shady teacher tied to her troubled past. After her release, she joins forces with an eccentric group of friends from prison to prove her innocence and find the daughter she was forced to leave behind.

Following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Oldboy (2003), Park Chan-wook brings his Vengeance Trilogy to a haunting close. Unlike classic American noir, which often frames the femme fatale as a destructive force, Park shifts the story away from revenge as pure rage and toward something far more devastating: moral accountability, the search for salvation, and the tragic emptiness at the heart of vengeance itself.

Revenge, 2017

Jen (Matilda Lutz) is on a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend when his two crude friends arrive unannounced for a hunting trip. As tensions inside the house escalate, the situation turns violent, leading to a shocking assault that leaves Jen brutalized and left for dead. Unfortunately for her attackers, she survives and sets out on a relentless quest for bloody revenge.

Coralie Fargeat crafts a hyper-stylized body horror film that reclaims the rape-revenge genre through a distinctly female lens. She subverts the male gaze and toxic masculinity by transforming Jen from victim into a powerful, unstoppable hunter. With its striking visuals, piercing sound design, and breakneck pacing, Revenge stands as a defining work of modern feminist cinema and an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride.

Piggy (Spanish: Cerdita), 2022

Sara (Laura Galán) takes refuge in her family’s butcher shop as the summer sun scorches her rural Spanish town. A teenager relentlessly bullied for her weight, she flees a clique of cruel girls at the town pool, only to witness them being violently abducted by a stranger who speeds away in his van. When the police question her, Sara stays silent. Drawn to the stranger, and sensing his fascination with her in return, she is torn between telling the truth and protecting the man who saved her.

Expanding on her 2018 short film, Carlota Pereda uses Galán’s fantastic lead performance to craft a shocking, violent, and deeply unsettling story about bullying, fat-shaming, and self-acceptance. Sara’s body defies Hollywood’s narrow image of the slim, white, blonde scream queen, making her the kind of underdog final girl horror fans can rally behind in an age of internet trolls and body-shaming. With high-tension gore and a razor-sharp moral dilemma, this intelligent Spanish slasher upends genre clichés while serving up something far more complicated than simple revenge.

Welcome back to “Beyond the Algorithm.”

Born from the belief that imaginative stories should not disappear into the endless feed, Widening the Lens spotlights six remarkable under-the-radar films each month.

Genre cinema is in the middle of a major renaissance. YouTube creators are moving into feature filmmaking with studio backing, prominent talent, and built-in fan bases, as seen with Kane Parsons’ The Backrooms and Curry Barker’s Obsession. At the same time, horror’s reach and commercial power continue to expand. The latest work from these emerging auteurs is drawing massive theatrical audiences, proving that genre fandom is not only thriving, but reaching a new peak.

Fresh perspectives, passionate fans, and strong box-office receipts have helped horror become one of the industry’s most dominant genres. Its market share has more than doubled, rising from 4.87% in 2013 to over 17% in 2025. Film production has also surged, with more than 1,500 movies now released each year, a fivefold increase from two decades ago. Fueled by Gen Z interest and impressive profitability, horror has entered what many are calling a new golden era. Even on modest budgets, horror films continue to deliver major returns, bringing in roughly $1 billion annually from North American ticket sales.

But with a steady stream of mainstream releases commanding attention, exceptional niche films can easily get lost in the noise. This month, Widening the Lens sets out to correct that. In these six chilling, unsettling, and macabre stories, emerging filmmakers expose buried secrets and hidden truths, using unexpected twists to upend classic genre conventions.

Riveting Asian horror with rule-breaking twists.

Sleep (Korean: 잠; RR: Jam), 2023

Domestic bliss curdles into dread for newlyweds Hyun-soo (Lee Sun-kyun) and Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi) when Hyun-soo begins sleepwalking in increasingly dangerous ways. Each morning, he wakes with no memory of what happened the night before. Terrified that he could harm himself, Soo-jin, or their newborn child, Soo-jin becomes consumed by anxiety and can barely sleep herself. Even with treatment, Hyun-soo’s condition worsens, pushing Soo-jin’s own mental state to the brink and forcing a confrontation that could determine whether their fragile family survives.

A husband’s strange nighttime behavior takes a sinister turn in Jason Yu’s nightmarish psychological tale. Yu, a former assistant to Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, makes his feature directorial debut with this peculiar South Korean black comedy horror mystery. He deftly blends wry humor with creeping terror, transforming a familiar premise into something far more unnerving.

Tense, intimate, and claustrophobic, Sleep remixes trust, fear, and paranoia into phobias nearly impossible to separate. Yu favors emotional depth over cheap shocks, using a sophisticated horror concept to explore the anxieties and fractures of married life. The film is made even more haunting by the presence of Korean leading man Lee Sun-kyun, who delivers one of his finest performances in a posthumous role following his death by suicide amid a tabloid scandal.

Sleep is sophisticated, audacious, and darkly funny, built around a compelling paradox that plays on our assumptions before sharply overturning them.

A Useful Ghost (Thai: ผีใช้ได้ค่ะ, Romanized: Pee chai dai ka), 2025

March (Wisarut Himmarat) is mourning the recent death of his wife, Nat (Davika Hoorne), who was killed by dust pollution. Then he discovers that her spirit has returned by possessing the vacuum cleaner in their home. Their reunion is tender, strange, and deeply inconvenient. March’s family objects to his unconventional human-ghost romance, while Nat, determined to protect her husband from allergies and win over her mother-in-law, must cleanse the family factory of malevolent spirits before their awkward second chance at love can endure.

Poltergeists receive a bracingly original treatment in Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke’s feature directorial debut. This electrifying, unexpected fable begins with a sneeze and expands into a perceptive, surreal story about bureaucracy, modernization, and moral decay. Blending queer love, fantasy, dark comedy, and absurdist humor, Boonbunchachoke invites viewers to abandon convention and let the film’s wild imagination take over.

Winner of the Grand Prize at Cannes Critics’ Week, A Useful Ghost adds striking depth and originality to contemporary Southeast Asian cinema. Offbeat, macabre, and visually stunning, the film begins as an eccentric romance before drifting into something more melancholic and reflective. It is a strange, soulful, and wholly singular work made for viewers willing to follow a ghost story somewhere beautifully unexpected.

Exit 8 (Japanese: 8番出口, Hepburn: 8-ban deguchi), 2025

Searching for Exit 8, a lost man finds himself trapped in a sterile, seemingly endless subway corridor. The rules are simple: do not miss anything out of the ordinary. If you spot an anomaly, turn back immediately. If everything appears normal, keep moving. Then leave through Exit 8. But one missed detail sends him right back to the beginning. The question becomes whether he can ever escape this infinite passage.

Genki Kawamura’s Japanese psychological horror mystery is a clever, anxiety-inducing, and unsettlingly immersive adaptation that remains faithful to its source material. The film is inspired by Kotake Create’s 2023 indie game, a deceptively simple walking simulator that went viral for its never-ending corridor and tense “spot the difference” gameplay.

With minimal elements, sharp art direction, and precise production design, Kawamura crafts a story that feels both mysterious and strangely compelling. Like the game, the film uses repetition and spatial disorientation to build unease, but it adds a more character-driven foundation: an aimless man forced to confront the anxieties of impending fatherhood. Through playful imagery, carefully placed visual shifts, and vivid side characters, Kawamura honors the game’s atmosphere while reshaping it into a fully cinematic experience.

What truly elevates Exit 8 is its inventive visual storytelling, which makes the film gripping whether or not you are familiar with the game. Kawamura morphs a viral video game premise into a disquieting, surreal meditation on guilt, fear, and fatherhood. The result is a small, eerie, and meticulously crafted gem.

Hyper-stylized horror comedies take action to new heights.

Pretty Lethal, 2026

On their way to a prestigious dance competition, five ballerinas who can barely stand one another become stranded in an isolated forest after their bus breaks down. With no other options, they reluctantly take shelter at a sinister roadside inn run by Devora Kasimer (Uma Thurman), a reclusive former ballet prodigy. The unease is immediate, and their worst suspicions soon prove justified. As the night turns deadly, the fractured team must set aside their rivalries and revamp years of brutal training into a survival strategy, retooling grace, discipline, and even pointe shoes into deadly weapons.

Directed by Vicky Jewson (Close) and written by Kate Freund (Afterlife), this action-packed thriller starts with a wickedly fun hook and quickly spirals into campy, gory, unhinged suspense. Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Avantika, Millicent Simmonds, and Iris Apatow lead a cast of rising young Hollywood actresses. With vibrant production design and inventive action sequences that blend visceral impact with comic flair, Thurman faces off against a deadly quintet of hell on heels in a role that knowingly echoes her Kill Bill persona.

It is a shame Pretty Lethal has not received more attention in horror circles, because it excels at portraying female solidarity against obnoxious creeps and delivers the deeply satisfying payoff of watching those monsters fall. At its core, the film challenges familiar ideas about ballerinas and femininity, reframing both as battle-ready forces shaped by pain, discipline, and resistance to patriarchal violence.

Fun, fast, bloody, and genuinely ingenious, Pretty Lethal knows exactly what it is and delivers on every promise of its premise. It is quintessential Friday-night popcorn fare.

Once inside, she uncovers the building’s sinister history: residents have been vanishing without a trace for decades. As she navigates its eccentric, enigmatic community, paranoia takes hold. Doors creak in the night, strange symbols appear in the walls, and her new “family” seems to be hiding deadly secrets. What begins as a gig from hell spirals into a fight to the death against ritualistic terror and twisted loyalty.

Co-written by Alex Litvak, They Will Kill You finds versatile filmmaker Kirill Sokolov delivering a blood-soaked, high-octane horror-action-comedy. The film does not reinvent the genre, but it knows exactly what kind of midnight movie it wants to be and embraces that identity with gleeful commitment. Packed with gore, black comedy, and bruising momentum, Sokolov crafts a carnage-fueled adrenaline rush.

A hyper-stylized carnival of bloodshed, They Will Kill You is propelled by cinematic swagger and a restless visual energy. Even when its grindhouse appeal begins to wear thin, Sokolov keeps the film entertaining through sheer momentum and invention. With its video-game aesthetic, edgy visual hijinks, and Beetz’s commanding performance as an unstoppable force of nature, the film becomes a zany, viciously entertaining ride.

Set in a vivid gothic world, They Will Kill You is a propulsive battle royale that showcases whip-smart, creative, and unpredictable action-horror. Despite unfair comparisons to Ready or Not, the film stands on its own as a gratifyingly cartoonish fantasy about sisterhood and solidarity. It also offers the rare thrill of watching an actor transform in real time, as Beetz becomes a bona fide action hero right before our eyes.

Teacake (Joe Keery) and Naomi (Georgina Campbell), two young employees at a self-storage facility built on the site of an old U.S. military base, are thrown into the night shift from hell when a parasitic fungus escapes from the base’s lowest sublevel, sealed by the government decades earlier. With time running out, the ill-equipped pair must team up with Robert (Liam Neeson), a battle-hardened former bioterror operative, to contain the vicious threat before it triggers humanity’s extinction.

Johnny Campbell directs this American science-fiction horror-comedy from a screenplay by David Koepp, adapted from Koepp’s own graphic novel of the same name. Campy gore, quick-witted humor, and contagious energy drive this shockingly gnarly creature feature. With its retro arcade vibe and fantastic practical effects, Cold Storage feels like a rare gem in a cinematic landscape crowded with CGI-heavy franchises, sequels, and sagas.

Campbell clearly understands the story he is telling and never tries to dress it up as something deeper than it is: a slick creature feature, light on depth but loaded with charm. Beyond the high-octane action, this quirky body-horror romp features witty dialogue and an endearing meet-cute that quickly pulls us into Teacake and Naomi’s chaotic night.

The idea of deadly fungi threatening the planet is not new, nor is the familiar premise of alien microbes driving humans to horrifying acts. Campbell blends those darker concepts but keeps the tone playful, creating something closer to Ghostbusters than The Thing, with a fresh sci-fi twist on the rom-com.

A perfect popcorn flick, Cold Storage is fun, fast, and clever: a modern riff on the breezy B-movie sci-fi monster mash-ups of the 1940s and 1950s.

Recently, two captivating films, each with a predominantly Black cast and centered on Black women, sparked conversation across Black social media communities. Mainstream media reported on both films’ financial shortcomings, but their transformative cultural influence extends far beyond box office receipts, contributing to meaningful artistic advancement in cinema.

Through their unique and unconventional approaches, Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters and Aleshea Harris’s Is God Is explore the many dimensions of Black women’s anger and how these complex portrayals have evolved on screen.

For eleven years, no other artist has matched Riley’s ingenuity and imagination as an on-screen storyteller. His latest project confronts commercial capitalism and the urgent need for Black women’s full recognition within a surreal, hyper-stylized, otherworldly setting.

In contrast to Riley’s fantastical dreamscape, Harris, pivoting from playwriting to filmmaking, presents a visceral, audacious, and brutally violent revenge tale framed as justified retribution. She confronts the serious subject of misogynoir, the intersection of anti-Black racism and misogyny faced by Black women, through a powerful cinematic journey that is wild, unpredictable, and unrelenting.

The characterization of Black women’s anger on screen is not new. Historically, cinema has often placed this theme in the hands of white directors, who used it to justify white characters and narratives. Their portrayals, however, were frequently inaccurate and prejudiced, missing the profound, empathetic journey of Black women searching for visibility, respect, and validation that these two filmmakers achieve.

As with other major cultural transformations, the dramatic evolution of Black women’s anger on screen becomes clear through three pivotal moments. Together, they provide essential context and underscore the deep cultural and cinematic relevance of I Love Boosters and Is God Is.

An openly racist society weaponized Black women’s rage to reinforce its most damaging stereotypes.

In the early 20th century, cinema depicted Black women through an openly racist lens, reducing their anger to caricature. Film and radio regularly relied on the sapphire archetype for comic relief, flattening genuine frustration into traits such as loudness, emasculation, and a supposed bad temper. Both the sapphire and mammy stereotypes grew out of the same mythology of the antebellum South, where white Southerners romanticized slavery and upheld racial hierarchy.

After the Civil War, the mammy myth reached the height of its popularity, becoming a nostalgic symbol of the “Old South.” Marketers heavily commercialized this image through mass-produced goods, most notably the original Aunt Jemima branding, before the trope moved into Hollywood. Landmark films such as The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Gone with the Wind (1939) pushed these stereotypes into mainstream entertainment, using them to reinforce the false idea that Black Americans had a natural, subservient place in society.

The Blaxploitation era reframed Black women’s rage as power, dignity, and defiance.

In 1970s Blaxploitation cinema, filmmakers began reimagining Black women’s rage as defiance, power, and liberation. Fueled by their anger, Black women on screen could finally seek revenge, demand justice, and confront the systems that had long tried to silence them. Amid sweeping social change, these films began speaking truth to power by transforming Black women’s anger into an anti-establishment force that challenged both the desexualized “mammy” and the aggressive “sapphire” stereotypes.

During this period, directors most often expressed Black women’s anger through the armed, hyper-sexualized, intelligent action heroine, best embodied by Pam Grier’s legendary performances in Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974). This updated image presented Black women as unapologetically resilient, fiercely independent, and deeply protective of their communities.

Indie Black cinema brought deeper empathy to Black women’s rage.

By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, films began portraying Black women’s anger with greater complexity, often navigating the tension between personal autonomy and the persistent “Angry Black Woman” trope. As more Black independent voices entered the industry, rage became more than a stereotype. It became a response to poverty, betrayal, trauma, and the daily fight for survival.

Waiting to Exhale (1995) validated the frustrations Black women face in their romantic and personal lives, while Precious (2009) exposed the devastating impact of generational trauma through its raw depiction of suffering and fury. Some studio films, such as Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005), continued to reinforce the sapphire stereotype. However, the growing Black indie film scene increasingly framed anger as a path toward self-worth, agency, and emotional truth.

Today’s stories bring that evolution into sharper focus.

Contemporary television and film are increasingly evoking Black women’s anger in ways that move beyond outdated, limiting clichés. By giving Black women a fuller human range, storytellers like Ava DuVernay and Shonda Rhimes have helped reshape their presence in leading roles and open doors for more nuanced portrayals.

Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You (2020) powerfully explores trauma, healing, and anger, while Watchmen (2019) uses Regina King’s Angela Abar, also known as Sister Night, to show how institutional inequity and generational trauma can fuel a fierce, strategic search for truth. Over time, film and television have expanded the possibilities for Black women on screen and made room for more varied expressions of rage. I Love Boosters and Is God Is exist within that evolution, benefiting from greater visibility and a wider audience willing to engage with the interior depth of Black female characters. These two revolutionary films show how far these representations have come, capturing not only Black women’s complex inner lives but also the sisterhood, community, and resilience that shape them.

I Love Boosters, 2026

In an altered-reality Bay Area, three friends, Corvette (Keke Palmer), Sade (Naomi Ackie), and Mariah (Taylour Paige), boost, or steal, high-end designer clothes and resell them at steep discounts to their working-class neighborhood. Their main target is Christie Smith (Demi Moore), a cutthroat fashion mogul with a cold, monochromatic empire. Their scheme gains momentum when they meet Jianhu (Poppy Liu), a Chinese factory worker who is also stealing from Christie, but at a far more alarming rate. Together, they help ignite a larger movement against corporate exploitation.

Boots Riley’s maximalist crime-caper comedy is as funny as it is politically charged. Eight years after Sorry to Bother You, he returns with another righteous middle finger to capitalism. As everyday necessities like groceries, rent, and gas become harder for many Americans to afford, Black women face especially difficult conditions because of higher layoff rates and shrinking workplace opportunities. Riley turns those anxieties into a campy, unruly Black feminist fantasia about survival, solidarity, and community.

Rather than framing these women as irredeemable criminals, Riley allows them to be loud, chaotic, glamorous, reckless, and deeply ambitious all at once. Corvette spends much of the film using her rage to justify her pursuit of everything she wants, but Riley ultimately redirects that selfish desire toward something more collective.

For Riley, it is possible to want better clothes, more flair, bigger dreams, and a fuller life without sacrificing others. The film’s central message is surprisingly hopeful: nobody survives these hard times alone. Riley uses Black female rage as a catalyst for social critique and communal liberation, moving beyond the familiar revenge trope. Here, anger is fully justified. It comes from watching creative work get stolen, communities suffer, and labor be exploited while wealthy executives profit.

Stylish, outlandish, and psychedelic, I Love Boosters feels like a fever dream with the wild energy of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. But beneath the spectacle is a message that reaches far beyond clothes: women of color, in Robin Hood fashion, usher in an era of grassroots survival where the poor devour the rich.

Drawing from Spaghetti Westerns, Greek tragedy, and urban culture, Harris’s Southern Gothic revenge thriller offers a darkly comic, absurd, and brutally violent reckoning with generational trauma, race, patriarchy, and the cycle of abuse. From the outset, the film announces itself as a fearless, unconventional work and a gripping testament to the power of sisterhood.

Beyond revenge, the film confronts the alarming rate of domestic violence affecting Black women amid rising Black femicide. When news of Black women being murdered by their partners remains so frequent, what becomes of their anger? Is it justified? Or does it become an unbearable burden when self-preservation is the only path left?

With extraordinary vision and precision, Is God Is fuses ferocious vengeance with profound sisterly love, creating an unforgettable journey into Black women’s raw emotion and their fight for righteous justice. Bomani J. Story offers a fresh take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, using a modern urban lens to explore generational trauma and racism. By framing Vicaria’s righteous anger as both a survival instinct and a response to structural cruelty, he transforms the harmful “Angry Black Woman” stereotype into something more powerful and liberating.

Story’s nuanced, politically charged update tackles major cultural themes by focusing on how Black youth are seen, feared, and failed. Vicaria does not view death as an unavoidable biological reality. Instead, she sees it as the result of conditions like gang warfare, addiction, and poverty, treating it as an illness she might be able to cure. Her desire to play God stems from her inability to process the cruelty, grief, and loss her family has endured, becoming an outlet for her buried anger and emotional wounds.

The film’s title cleverly weaponized the “Angry Black Woman” trope as both critique and provocation. Story examines the links between anger, intelligence, and survival as Black women navigate oppressive forces, from biased educational systems to widespread gun violence. Rather than relying on the familiar cinematic pattern of endless Black suffering, Story offers a rebuttal. He breathes new life into a classic story by grounding it in 21st-century social concerns, creating a powerful work about grief, resistance, hope, and liberation.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster connects with films such as The Blackening, Us, and Night of the Living Dead in its portrayal of communities as cultural microcosms. Through layered sci-fi social commentary, these films explore urgent themes that reach beyond race while remaining deeply rooted in the Black experience.

Coming-of-age stories rarely explore grief through a preteen’s eyes, largely because young children struggle to understand, much less express, emotions they have not yet learned to name. Faced with a world beyond their comprehension, they are forced to make sense of who they are, with devastating loss accelerating that process.

Actress-turned-filmmaker Ana Asensio, whose 2017 directorial debut, Most Beautiful Island, won the SXSW Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature, handles this delicate transition with remarkable sensitivity in La niña de la cabra (Goat Girl), an emotionally rich Spanish drama about being forced to grow up too soon.

In interviews, including a conversation with Widening the Lens, Asensio has discussed her interest in how children use their natural curiosity to unravel the mysteries of the world and confront their own fears. By exploring the space between childhood and adulthood, she examines loss, faith, social class, and prejudice through the eyes of a young girl.

Eight-year-old Elena (Alessandra González) lives in the suburbs of Madrid in the late 1980s. Her understanding of the world begins to fracture when her abuela (Gloria Muñoz) dies just as Elena is preparing for her First Communion. In the aftermath, she finds comfort in her friendship with Serezade (Juncal Fernández), a visiting Roma girl who is rarely seen without her goat. Her family’s disapproval of the friendship, combined with Serezade’s freer outlook, leads Elena to question both her Roman Catholic upbringing and the strict social customs she has been taught to accept as absolute.

Asensio keeps the film firmly grounded in Elena’s child-sized perspective, capturing both the wonder of childhood and the intensity of its friendships. Through a simple, intimate, and tender approach, she traces Elena’s impressionable journey while weaving in a quiet melancholy. The result is a distinctive film in which reality brushes against fantasy and comedy gently gives way to drama.

How Spain’s Religious Symbols Shape a Child’s World

Children often experience the world as a fluid blend of reality, imagination, inherited beliefs, and personal fears. Drawing on artistic traditions rooted in Spain’s religious and cultural history, Asensio explores how ancient teachings continue to shape the way children understand the present. She contrasts the rigid, rule-bound world of adults with the expansive curiosity and imagination of childhood.

Among her influences is Francisco Goya, particularly his Black Painting Witches’ Sabbath, with its unsettling imagery of violence, intimidation, aging, and death. Asensio also draws from León Felipe, the celebrated Spanish anti-fascist poet whose poem “I Know All the Stories” champions the importance of questioning inherited narratives and learning to think independently from an early age.

At the beginning of the film, Elena reads the poem aloud to her grandmother, who encourages her to embrace what makes her different. This moment establishes the tension at the heart of the film: Elena is surrounded by religious teachings and social traditions that present the world in fixed, absolute terms, yet her grandmother urges her to develop a mind of her own. After her abuela dies, Elena is left to navigate those competing pressures without the guidance of the one adult who encouraged her individuality.

Asensio translates Elena’s confusion and grief into magical realism, drawing on the macabre atmosphere of early German Expressionist cinema. Reality and fantasy begin to overlap as Elena struggles to process emotions she cannot yet name. The adults around her fail to acknowledge her pain, while their inflexible beliefs give shape to her fears. Those fears eventually become focused on Lola, Serezade’s goat, which Elena associates with both death and the unknown.

Within Roman Catholic tradition, goats have often been linked to the devil, sin, or the damned. Because Elena has been raised within a strict religious framework, Lola becomes a physical embodiment of everything she has been taught to fear but does not fully understand. The goat frightens her for the same reason death does: both exist beyond the limits of her comprehension. For Serezade, however, Lola represents something entirely different; a source of comfort, companionship, and loyalty.

Through the goat, Asensio reveals how the same symbol can carry radically different meanings depending on the beliefs imposed upon a child. Lola becomes the bridge between Elena’s reality and imagination, showing how inherited teachings can shape fear while curiosity can gradually transform it. In the face of grief and confusion, Elena begins to create her own understanding of the world, discovering that imagination can offer a form of comfort when certainty no longer exists.

When Unimaginable Loss Becomes an Invisible Burden

When the person closest to you is suddenly gone, uncertainty rushes in. For a child, grief can be especially difficult to navigate when the adults around them are struggling with losses and pressures of their own.

Elena and her parents cope in different ways. Her mother longs to reclaim the independence she once had as a hairdresser, while her father retreats into the expectations of a patriarchal household. Neither is indifferent to Elena’s pain, but their own frustrations and responsibilities leave them emotionally preoccupied at the moment she needs them most.

As a result, Elena must navigate one of the most important transitions of her young life largely without support. She does not simply miss her grandmother; she longs for the guidance of the person who encouraged her individuality and helped shape who she hoped to become. Without that steadying influence, Elena struggles to find her footing and form an independent identity.

Seeking relief from a world that suddenly feels overwhelming, Elena turns to curiosity and imagination. She becomes increasingly drawn to unfamiliar people, places, and ideas, searching for a space beyond the religious and familial rules that define her daily life. Her parents may see her behavior as rebellion, but Elena is really beginning to question what she has been taught and develop a moral code for herself.

That process is neither simple nor painless. Elena must learn to distinguish inherited beliefs from personal truth while grieving the person who once helped her make sense of both. Yet she remains determined to define herself rather than allow fear, loss, or expectation to do it for her.

Curiosity as a Path to Comfort

La niña de la cabra (Goat Girl) may not reach the elegance of Céline Sciamma’s Petite Maman or fellow Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón’s Summer 1993 in its portrayal of childhood grief, but all three films share the same emotional truth: solitude intensifies a child’s natural curiosity, pushing them to discover who they are and who they want to become.

Asensio’s tender, deeply sincere film honors the hopeful way children interpret the world, even when that understanding is shaped by pain. As Elena prepares for her First Communion, the priest emphasizes the importance of a warm embrace. It is a lesson her parents come to recognize only gradually, but one Elena understands almost immediately through her friendship with Serezade.

Visually striking and steeped in nostalgia, Goat Girl brings a grounded, socially critical perspective to 1980s Spain through the eyes of a grieving child. Elena’s spiritual journey, as guided by Asensio, reveals childhood grief as a search for belonging, one that ultimately finds peace in the comfort of human connection. It is a simple but affecting truth that adults could stand to remember.

Backed by Spain’s ICAA film institute, the film was acquired by prominent Spanish art-house distributor and producer Avalon, whose credits include The Worst Person in the World, Drive My Car, and Alcarràs. Before its April theatrical release in Spain, the female-led production premiered at the Málaga Film Festival on March 18, 2025, and later gained attention across the festival circuit.

La niña de la cabra (Goat Girl) begins its U.S. theatrical run exclusively at Cinema Village in New York City on June 19, 2026, before expanding to additional cities nationwide, distributed by Outsider Pictures. Built on the belief that broader storytelling makes cinema richer, Widening the Lens spotlights six exceptional, overlooked films that place historically marginalized voices at the forefront.

Pride Month traces its roots to the 1969 Stonewall Riots and the first Pride march held in New York City one year later. In 1999, President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. President Barack Obama expanded that language in 2009, officially proclaiming Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. What began as localized marches and commemorations has since grown into a global movement.

That expansion has unfolded alongside a dramatic shift on screen. LGBTQ+ characters have moved from near-erasure and tragic stereotypes toward fuller, more joyful, and increasingly mainstream portrayals. Yet progress remains uneven, and many parts of the community are still pushed to the margins.

GLAAD’s latest Where We Are on TV report found that transgender characters represented only 6.7% of the LGBTQ+ characters counted. The shortfall is especially acute for Black and Brown lesbians and queer women, whose stories remain less frequently centered, and less fully developed than those of their white counterparts.

Widening the Lens brings greater attention to filmmakers and communities too often excluded from the cinematic canon. Spanning countries, cultures, and generations, these groundbreaking works challenge narrow portrayals, preserve overlooked histories, and mark important turning points in LGBTQ+ cinema.

More than milestones of queer filmmaking, these films reveal cinema’s singular power to change how people see one another. Through resistance, solidarity, humor, and joy, they invite audiences not simply to witness marginalized experiences, but to recognize the humanity within them.

Landmark Documentaries Capturing Trans Lives at Pivotal Moments in History

Jennie Livingston’s 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning became a cultural touchstone, expanding the visibility of trans and queer communities on screen and helping create space for other long-overlooked stories to reach wider audiences.

Dressed in Blue (Spanish: Vestida de Azul), 1983

A foundational work of trans filmmaking, Dressed in Blue offers a candid portrait of six trans women in post-Franco Madrid: Eva Pérez de los Cobos Ávila, Nacha María Sánchez Sánchez, Loren Arana Arellano, Josette Ruiz-Orejón Casado, Renée Amor Fernández, and Tamara Muñoz Santiago. Framing the film around an elegant luncheon, director Antonio Giménez-Rico gives them space to recount their histories, voice their ambitions, and reveal intimate details of their daily routines and gender expression. Nothing is off-limits as these glamorous, resourceful women debate everything from fur coats to money.

Its significance extends far beyond its narrative form. By allowing the women to speak in their own voices and shape their own stories, Giménez-Rico brings a long-hidden community into view with warmth, truthfulness, and remarkable intimacy.

The film’s empathy is unwavering. Giménez-Rico does not shy away from the cruelty, exploitation, and indignities the women endure, but neither does he allow that suffering to define them. Instead, he centers their humor, resourcefulness, vulnerability, and strength.

It is devastating to know that four of the film’s six subjects later died from AIDS-related complications. After languishing in obscurity for decades, Dressed in Blue was restored and released by Altered Innocence in partnership with Anus Films. It now stands as a vital visual archive of trans life in Spain less than a decade after dictator Francisco Franco’s death.

Dressed in Blue honors these women not as symbols, but as vivid, complex individuals. Their candor and resilient spirit, captured all too briefly, helped reshape how trans lives could be seen, and represented, on screen.

Before turning to film, D. Smith built a successful career as a two-time Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer and became the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted television series. After transitioning, however, she found herself shut out of the music industry. When several directors rejected her idea for Kokomo City, Smith took matters into her own hands, directing, producing, editing, and shooting the film despite having no previous filmmaking experience.

Her fearless debut follows four Black trans sex workers, Daniella Carter, Dominique Silver, Koko Da Doll, and Liyah Mitchell, in New York City and Atlanta. Channeling the kinetic intimacy of Paris Is Burning, Smith cuts through stereotypes to illuminate the women’s complexity, humor, vulnerability, and hard-won insight.

Through vivid monologues, frank conversations, and stylized re-enactments, Smith builds a world charged with grit, joy, and defiance. Restless editing, explicit imagery, and often jaw-dropping honesty fuel an unflinching examination of contemporary Black trans life, including the rejection and marginalization these women face within their own communities. Yet the film refuses to reduce them to trauma, giving equal weight to their pleasure, resilience, and irrepressible wit.

That urgency became devastatingly real when Koko Da Doll was killed in April 2023, after the film’s Sundance premiere but before its theatrical release. Against a backdrop of persistent violence against trans women, her death lends the documentary an even more painful resonance.

Far more than a record of hardship, Kokomo City is an essential work of queer cinema: a brash, self-aware testament to a rarely seen community and a defiant vision of a more inclusive future.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, 2024

Executive produced by Elliot Page, Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee’s Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story restores Jackie Shane, a trailblazing Black trans soul singer, to her rightful place in music history. The film traces her ascent at a time when the language now commonly used to describe trans identity had yet to enter public consciousness. From Nashville’s R&B clubs to the thriving music scenes of Montreal and Toronto, Shane emerged as one of the most electrifying performers of the 1960s before abruptly walking away from the spotlight in 1971.

Born in the Jim Crow South, Shane honed her craft in Nashville before captivating Canadian audiences with her magnetic stage presence and signature hit, “Any Other Way,” which reached No. 2 on Toronto’s CHUM chart. Yet just as greater stardom seemed within reach, she left the entertainment industry to pursue a private life on her own terms. After her death in 2019, two nieces who had never known her inherited her estate and discovered an unpublished autobiography among her papers.

With only one surviving television performance, the filmmakers faced a significant visual gap. They bridge it through painterly rotoscope animation created from footage of performer Makayla Walker, also known as Makayla Couture, lip-syncing to Shane’s voice and music. Drawn from hours-long telephone conversations between Shane and Mabbott, the film allows her to narrate her extraordinary life in her own unmistakable voice.

That voice is as defiant as it is charismatic. Despite the dangers she faced as a Black trans woman, Shane repeatedly refused to compromise her identity. She turned down The Ed Sullivan Show because producers demanded that she appear without makeup and rejected American Bandstand because Black teenagers were excluded from its studio audience. These were not merely missed opportunities but profound acts of resistance against an industry shaped by racism, homophobia, and rigid gender expectations.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story is more than a tribute; it is an act of cultural reclamation. The film returns a pioneering Black trans artist to a history that nearly erased her while preserving a crucial chapter of early queer life. Shane may not have received the recognition she deserved during her lifetime, but she never surrendered her identity. This extraordinary documentary honors a woman who refused to let racism, homophobia, or transphobia define, or destroy, her.

Emerging Voices Reimagine a World Where Black and Brown Queer Women and Nonbinary People Can Live, Laugh, and Love Freely

Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman made cinematic history as the first feature written and directed by an out Black lesbian. A landmark of New Queer Cinema, it placed Black lesbian lives at the center of the screen and opened new possibilities for queer women of color to tell their own stories.

Born in Flames, 1983

Set in an alternate United States ten years after a peaceful socialist revolution, Lizzie Borden’s speculative docufiction imagines a New York where promises of equality have failed to eliminate racism, sexism, class inequality, and heterosexism. As the new government congratulates itself on its progress, Black, lesbian, and working-class women organize a revolution within the revolution.

Resistance takes many forms. Honey broadcasts calls for solidarity from Phoenix Radio, while white punk Isabel delivers a more incendiary message through Radio Ragazza. The Women’s Army practices collective self-defense and direct action, and three editors at a state-sponsored socialist newspaper begin questioning the party line. Though divided by race, class, ideology, and tactics, these groups confront the same truth: a revolution that liberates only some people is no revolution at all.

Born in Flames is a radical, intersectional critique of “universal sisterhood” and the white, middle-class feminism that often claims to represent all women. Borden exposes the fractures within progressive movements, asking who benefits from political change, and whose voices are silenced once victory has been declared. Genuine solidarity, the film insists, requires confronting every form of oppression rather than treating race, class, gender, and sexuality as separate struggles.

Its jagged sci-fi vérité style can be abrasive, but its ideas are never safe, simplistic, or self-satisfied. Borden does not present a single faction as morally infallible or offer an easy blueprint for liberation. Instead, the film channels anger into a provocation: What should resistance look like when institutions, and even supposed allies, refuse to listen?

Shot over nearly five years for roughly $40,000, Born in Flames embodies the DIY urgency of the politics it depicts. Initially dismissed by many mainstream critics, it found renewed recognition following Anthology Film Archives’ 35mm restoration in 2016. Its punk energy would resonate with later riot grrrl and feminist communities, while its uncompromising form helped establish it as a landmark of guerrilla cinema. More than four decades later, it remains a fierce and startlingly relevant model for feminist revolt.

Rafiki (Swahili for “Friend”), 2018

Wanuri Kahiu transforms Ugandan writer Monica Arac de Nyeko’s 2007 Caine Prize-winning short story “Jambula Tree” into a vibrant queer coming-of-age drama. Set in Nairobi, Rafiki confronts the legal and social forces that constrain LGBTQ+ lives while insisting that queer African stories can be defined by joy rather than suffering.

Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) spends her days helping at her father’s shop while waiting to begin nursing school. Ziki (Sheila Munyiva) moves through life with greater freedom, socializing with friends and choreographing dances. Their fathers’ rivalry for a County Assembly seat brings them together, and a cautious attraction soon deepens into a romantic relationship. Under the neighborhood’s watchful gaze, they must balance the exhilaration of first love against family expectations, political hostility, and laws that criminalize same-sex intimacy.

Kahiu refuses to reduce queer African life to trauma. Bursting with color, music, humor, and affection, the film captures both the thrill of self-discovery and the shame imposed on those who defy social expectations. Mugatsia and Munyiva bring warmth and electricity to a story that celebrates resilience without ignoring the dangers surrounding them.

Off-screen, Rafiki became a test of artistic freedom. It made history as Kenya’s first film selected for Cannes’ Official Selection, yet the Kenya Film Classification Board blocked its domestic release after Kahiu refused to soften its depiction of a same-sex relationship. Her legal challenge secured a seven-day theatrical window in 2018, but the restriction was later upheld. In January 2026, Kenya’s Court of Appeal struck down parts of the country’s film-censorship framework, though it did not automatically clear Rafiki for unrestricted exhibition.

Bruising yet buoyant, Rafiki rejects shame and refuses despair. It affirms the courage to be seen, the freedom to choose one’s own future, and the possibility of connection in a society determined to suppress it.

The Queen of My Dreams, 2023

Fawzia Mirza, a longtime figure in Chicago’s indie scene, writes and directs this lively Pakistani-Canadian coming-of-age drama. Adapted from her stage play Me, My Mom & Sharmila, itself inspired by her 2012 short film The Queen of My Dreams, the film stars Nimra Bucha (Polite Society) and Amrit Kaur (The Sex Lives of College Girls) as Mariam and Azra. Though the two initially seem irreconcilably different, the story gradually reveals how closely their coming-of-age experiences mirror one another.

Azra (Kaur), a queer Pakistani woman living in Toronto, feels worlds apart from her conservative Muslim parent. After her father’s sudden death brings her to Karachi, she clashes with her relatives and the strict religious customs surrounding his burial. As grief, memory, and imagination blur, Azra is swept into a dreamlike, Bollywood-infused vision of her parents’ 1969 romance, and discovers that Mariam once shared her restlessness, defiance, and longing for freedom.

Mirza fills this story of displacement with cultural specificity and infectious energy, moving fluidly among Pakistan, Toronto, and Nova Scotia. She illustrates the ache of living between countries, cultures, and generations while tracing how expectations placed on Muslim women have shifted, and how some pressures persist.

At its core is Azra’s isolation as a queer woman in a Muslim family, set against Mariam’s more conventional expectations. Yet Mirza refuses to reduce one to rebellion and the other to tradition. Instead, she shows how migration, grief, faith, and inherited wounds can drive families apart even as shared experience quietly binds them together.

Spirited, funny, and deeply felt, The Queen of My Dreams bridges East and West, past and present, grief and joy. Most powerfully, it centers a young queer woman of color claiming the freedom to live fully while discovering that the person she has resisted may understand that longing better than she ever imagined.

To understand where women and their stories stand in the rise of indie film, we first have to look at the beginning. History often feels like an expedition into unknown territory, full of overlooked names, buried achievements, and unexpected discoveries.

Early Hollywood has long recognized and celebrated men for shaping the industry. But the women who helped build it were just as essential. Working in an environment often hostile to their survival, they found unlikely allies, pushed through unavoidable barriers, and carved out space where none had been freely given.

Because many of these women were forced to work outside commercial channels, they helped lay the groundwork for independent filmmaking. Their limitations became a source of invention, and their success left behind a lasting legacy: fearless, female-centered stories that still deserve to be seen, studied, and remembered.

A recent British Film Institute (BFI) article caught my attention for exactly that reason. It spotlighted women-directed works that have either faded from public memory or were never given the recognition they deserved in the first place.

The list is a treasure trove of women who shattered expectations and forged their own paths in an era defined by astonishing resistance. At the dawn of the medium, pioneers such as Gene Gauntier, Lois Weber, and Alice Guy-Blaché insisted that women not only deserved a place behind the camera, they belonged there.

History, however, has shown little mercy to these overlooked luminaries. Many celebrated critics’ lists, treated by cinephiles as sacred texts, have repeatedly excluded them. One glaring example is Sight and Sound, a publication often regarded with near-religious reverence in movie culture. Its influential poll did not include a woman-directed title until 2012, when Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) and Claire Denis’s Beau Travail (1998) finally appeared, six decades after the poll began.

Necessity pushed many of these early innovators to seek funding beyond established channels, largely because of the misogyny and gender inequality that defined the era. Such relentless barriers would have deterred many, but these women persisted, creating invaluable legacies that permanently reshaped cinema.

While progress has been steady, there is still much work to be done in honoring these forgotten heroines. Widening the Lens recognizes the vital efforts of critics, scholars, historians, and programmers who have helped restore these women and their work to their rightful place in the cinematic canon, reframing their achievements as the groundbreaking feats they always were.

Institutions such as MoMA, TCM, Criterion, Milestone Films, Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project, the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry, and the UCLA Film & Television Archive remain among the most important advocates for preserving moving-image culture, including the work of these avant-garde women.

The BFI article is an important step toward restoring older titles to public view, but Widening the Lens narrows the focus to a harder road: resourceful women from around the world who financed their own work from the margins and created stories that put their countries on the map. Fueled by a maverick spirit and sheer determination, these women built outside the system and changed global cinema forever.

Even today, women remain disproportionately shut out behind the camera. The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative reported that only 9 women directed the 100 top-grossing U.S. movies of 2025, a sharp reminder that progress remains fragile. The barriers are even steeper for women of color: across the report’s 19-year sample, the major distributors with the strongest records still released fewer than 10 top-grossing movies directed by women of color. Because of the sacrifices made by those who came before them, women continue to create vital work beyond Hollywood’s usual channels, pushing forward despite the industry’s persistent systemic obstacles.

This list is not meant to be comprehensive. Widening the Lens is simply bringing a few buried treasures back into view, works that deserve far greater recognition, even if many remain difficult, or impossible, to stream. For some of these rare titles, availability is beside the point. The fact that they exist at all is reason enough to acknowledge, study, and celebrate them.

So let’s salute the women around the world who helped lay the groundwork for today’s growing community of independent female auteurs. We hope this list offers a glimpse into a richer, more expansive legacy of women-directed work, one filled with masterful, underappreciated movies and countless contributions still waiting to be recognized.

Revolutionaries situated south of the border.

1. Nobody’s Wife (Spanish: La mujer de nadie)
Adela Sequeyro, Mexico, 1937

Nobody’s Wife stands as a milestone in Mexican cinema: the first talkie film in Mexico directed by a woman. The story follows Ana María, a young woman who escapes a difficult home life and sets out to determine her own future. She refuses the expectations of traditional marriage and chooses self-reliance instead, a strikingly progressive theme for the late 1930s.

Sequeyro directed, produced, wrote, and starred in the film, portraying Ana María as a self-aware woman determined to make her own romantic and personal choices. In doing so, she challenged the period’s rigid gender expectations both on-screen and behind the camera. The film was produced through Carola, the cooperative Sequeyro founded with her husband, Mario Tenorio.

Years later, Nobody’s Wife was recovered and restored, along with other Sequeyro works, allowing historians to reexamine her crucial but long-overlooked place in Mexican cinema. Projects such as the Women Film Pioneers Project have helped bring renewed attention to Sequeyro’s legacy and to the broader contributions of women who helped shape film history from the margins.

2. Streetwalker (Spanish: Trotacalles)
Matilde Landeta, Mexico, 1951

Set in Mexico City, Landeta’s third feature follows two estranged sisters divided by class but trapped by the same patriarchal and financial forces. One is a sex worker surviving exploitation on the fringes; the other is a society woman confined by a loveless marriage. Their intertwined fates expose a world where women are treated as possessions, bargaining chips, and objects of male control.

Landeta fought to make movies about women who acted, resisted, and endured, not women reduced to decorative figures. With Streetwalker, she turns melodrama into a sharp critique of sex, marriage, class, and power in a society built to punish women for wanting autonomy. Her characterization of sex work was unusually frank for its time, and because the industry offered little support, she had to help finance her own productions.

The result is both a fierce social statement and a bittersweet marker in Landeta’s career. Streetwalker was her third feature and effectively brought her directorial work to a halt for decades, underscoring the extraordinary barriers faced by one of the only women directing in Mexico during the country’s Golden Age.

3. One Way or Another (Spanish: De cierta manera)
Sara Gómez, Cuba, 1977

One Way or Another is a landmark hybrid of fiction and documentary that probes the social and cultural tensions of post-revolutionary Cuba. Set in Havana’s Miraflores housing development, the story centers on Yolanda, a middle-class schoolteacher, and Mario, a working-class factory worker struggling with ingrained machismo. As their romance develops, their differences reveal deeper conflicts around class, race, gender, and the unfinished work of revolution.

Gómez blends narrative drama with documentary footage, cinéma vérité techniques, and real locales to create an urgent, essay-like portrait of a society in transition. She resists presenting the Cuban Revolution as a completed triumph, arguing that genuine change requires more than new political structures. Racism, sexism, poverty, and patriarchal habits must also be confronted in daily life, relationships, workplaces, and communities.

A pioneering Afro-Cuban filmmaker, Gómez became the first woman to direct a Cuban feature. She died at 31 during post-production, before the work was complete. Released posthumously in 1977, the project was finished by her collaborators, including Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Julio García Espinosa, and produced by Cuba’s Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC). The result remains one of the defining achievements of Cuban feminist cinema.

4. Oriana
Fina Torres, Venezuela, 1985

Adapted from Marvel Moreno’s celebrated short story Oriane, tía Oriane, Oriana is an acclaimed Venezuelan drama that blurs the line between past and present, turning memory into a haunted space where generations of family lineage collide. After inheriting a crumbling hacienda, Maria returns to Venezuela from France to settle the estate of her late aunt, Oriana. Suzana Amaral made her feature directorial debut in her fifties with Hour of the Star, a devastating adaptation of Clarice Lispector’s final novel. The story follows Macabéa, a poor, naïve typist from northeastern Brazil who moves to São Paulo in search of a better life. Adrift in the city, she endures loneliness, a cruel romance, and a tragic fate she can barely comprehend, moving through the world with heartbreaking innocence as society refuses to see her.

Amaral neither romanticizes poverty nor reduces Macabéa to a symbol of political struggle. Instead, she focuses on something more intimate and unsettling: the erosion of identity, dignity, and inner life under the weight of invisibility. Hour of the Star is an unflinching display of urban poverty, female solitude, and the dehumanizing anonymity faced by rural migrants trying to survive in Brazil’s modern cityscape.

The result became one of the defining works of modern Brazilian cinema. Marcélia Cartaxo won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 1986 Berlin International Film Festival, and the film was selected as Brazil’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Amaral crafted the film on a lean $150,000 budget, with roughly 70% funded by Embrafilme and the remaining support raised elsewhere. That modest scale only sharpens the film’s achievement: with limited resources, Amaral created a piercing masterpiece that gave cinematic weight to a woman the world was built to overlook.

6. Golden Gate Girl (Chinese: Jinmen Nü; also known as Tears in San Francisco)

Golden Gate Girl follows a 16-year-old Chinese American girl who falls in love with a Cantonese opera star against her father’s wishes. After she becomes pregnant and dies in childbirth, her daughter is raised by the family’s salesman and cook before eventually reconnecting with her estranged grandfather.

The film is historically significant on several fronts. Made in San Francisco for Chinese-language audiences, it crossed national, cultural, and linguistic borders during the Exclusion Era and offered a rare example of Chinese American storytelling outside Hollywood’s mainstream. It also featured the work of Esther Eng, one of the few women directing feature-length movies in the United States during the 1940s.

Eng’s career bridged Chinese American and Hong Kong movie culture at a time when few women, let alone queer women of color, had access to the director’s chair. Across her 11 features, she built a transnational body of work centered on diaspora, identity, romance, and women’s lives. Though much of her output is now lost, Golden Gate Girl remains a vital glimpse of a trailblazer who pushed past racial, cultural, linguistic, and gender barriers.

7. The Eternal Breasts (Chibusa yo eien nare, Japanese: 乳房よ永遠なれ; also known as Forever a Woman)
Kinuyo Tanaka, Japan, 1955

Legendary actress Kinuyo Tanaka directed this deeply affecting drama about divorce, motherhood, artistic ambition, illness, and desire. Based on the life of tanka poet Fumiko Nakajō, The Eternal Breasts follows a woman who leaves an unhappy marriage, struggles with the pain of losing custody of a child, finds her voice as a creative, and confronts breast cancer with startling emotional and physical honesty.

Released in postwar Japan, the film offered a daring, unusually penetrating depiction of a woman’s life beyond conventional sacrifice or victimhood. Tanaka addresses subjects under-explored with such candor at the time: the stigma of cancer, the trauma of mastectomy, the ache of maternal separation, and a dying woman’s longing for affection, sexuality, and self-expression.

Rather than reducing its heroine to tragedy, The Eternal Breasts presents her as a resilient artist determined to control her own story. Tanaka’s third directorial feature stands as a major feminist breakthrough in Japanese cinema, challenging a male-dominated industry while giving sacred space to female pain, creativity, and desire.

8. The Arch (Chinese: 董夫人; Dong fu ren)
Tang Shu Shuen, Hong Kong, 1968

Widely considered one of Hong Kong’s first art-house films, The Arch marked a stark departure from the martial arts and opera-driven commercial cinema that dominated the industry at the time. Set in 17th-century China, the story follows Madam Tung, a respected widow whose carefully ordered life is disrupted when a cavalry captain is quartered in her home. As desire begins to stir between them, she is forced to choose between human longing and the symbolic “chastity” arch meant to honor her virtue.

Tang turns this restrained period drama into a psychologically rich tapestry of a woman trapped by Confucian patriarchy. Beyond plot mechanics, she uses austere black-and-white imagery, sparse dialogue, freeze frames, dissolves, and unconventional editing to make repression feel visible. The result is a work less concerned with narrative momentum than with emotional pressure: the weight of duty, the cost of self-denial, and the muted devastation of a life shaped by social expectation.

9. El camino (English: The Path)

Based on Miguel Delibes’s 1950 novel, El camino follows Daniel, an 11-year-old boy in rural postwar Spain, during his final days at home before leaving for school in the city. As Daniel prepares to bid farewell to his village, his friends, and the world that shaped him, Mariscal turns a coming-of-age story into a piercing representation of a country caught between tradition and modernity.

Beneath its warmth and wit, El camino offers a sharp critique of Francoist Spain’s suffocating social order. Mariscal captures a rural society bound by Catholic morality, censorship, gendered expectations, and the pressure to conform. With its tender, funny, and melancholy tone, the film also possesses a quiet defiance, functioning as a reflection on childhood memory and an indictment of adult life’s constraints.

As one of the few prominent women directing in Spain during the 1960s, Mariscal worked under extreme legal, financial, and cultural restrictions. With support from her husband and creative partner, Valentín Javier, as well as family and friends, she made the project a reality despite the barriers facing women in post-Franco Spain. Today, El camino is remembered as one of her most courageous works: a lyrical, socially alert film made under a regime notorious for silencing dissent.

10. The Cuenca Crime (Spanish: El crimen de Cuenca)
Pilar Miró, Spain, 1980

Based on a notorious miscarriage of justice from the early 20th century, The Cuenca Crime follows two innocent peasants accused of murdering a shepherd who later turns out to be alive. Brutally tortured by the Guardia Civil, they are coerced into false confessions and destroyed by a system determined to protect its own authority.

Miró reconstructs the case with crushing realism, exposing police brutality, judicial corruption, and state impunity with singular frankness. Her unflinching depiction of torture turned the film into a national scandal, especially because the Guardia Civil remained one of the most loaded symbols of Francoist power. In a newly democratic Spain still struggling to define the limits of free expression, the film became a flashpoint.

The backlash was immediate. The Cuenca Crime was seized and banned, and Miró was brought before a military tribunal, making the case one of the most infamous censorship battles of Spain’s democratic transition. Public outrage eventually helped clear the way for the film’s release in Spain in 1981, where it became both a commercial success and a major milestone in post-Franco film freedom.

Produced by Alfredo Matas and backed by Spanish companies Incine and Jet Films, The Cuenca Crime endures as one of the defining political films of Spain’s transition to democracy: a furious indictment of institutional violence and a powerful reminder that democracy does not arrive fully formed.

11. The Sealed Soil (Persian: Khake Sar Beh Mohr)
Marva Nabili, Iran, 1977

The Sealed Soil is the earliest complete surviving feature directed by an Iranian woman. Set in a poor village in pre-revolutionary Iran, it follows Roo-Bekheir, an 18-year-old woman resisting the arranged marriage and narrow future expected of her. Her refusal is not seen as a desire for autonomy, but as illness, sin, or possession.

Nabili turns that passive resistance into a devastating examination of institutionalized misogyny. With remarkable restraint, she captures a woman caught between tradition, modernization, and a community determined to interpret independence as danger. The result is both profound and allegorical: a feminist study of selfhood on the eve of national upheaval.

Made under extraordinary circumstances, The Sealed Soil was smuggled out of Iran and completed in New York. It has never screened legally in Iran, but its recent UCLA restoration and Arbelos/Venera Films re-release have returned this long-buried seminal film to public view. Unvarnished, haunting, and politically charged, it stands as one of Iranian cinema’s great acts of feminist defiance.

12. The Day I Became a Woman (Persian: Roozi ke zan shodam)
Marzieh Meshkini, Iran, 2000

Shot on Iran’s Kish Island, The Day I Became a Woman is a bold three-part anthology about girlhood, adulthood, and old age. Each story follows a woman at a different stage of life, using stark symbolism to expose the social rules that restrict female freedom.

In the first chapter, Hava turns nine and is told that childhood is over. With one final hour before she must become “a woman” in the eyes of her family, she tries to hold on to the last scraps of freedom. In the second, Ahoo joins a women’s bicycle race while her husband, relatives, and village elders chase her down, demanding she submit. In the third, Hoora, an elderly woman newly in possession of money, buys everything she was denied during a lifetime of marriage and confinement.

Meshkini’s debut is both playful and severe, lyrical and furious. Through simple images charged with emblematic force, she examines how patriarchy shapes women’s lives from childhood to old age. The film’s power lies in its clarity: every stage of life offers a different form of constraint, but also a different act of refusal.

Produced through Makhmalbaf Film House, the family-run film school and production arm associated with Mohsen Makhmalbaf, The Day I Became a Woman became a major work of modern Iranian feminist cinema. 13. 36 Chowringhee Lane
Aparna Sen, India, 1981

At 36, celebrated Bengali actress Aparna Sen made her feature directorial debut with 36 Chowringhee Lane, a tender, aching portrayal of loneliness, aging, and postcolonial displacement. The film follows Violet Stoneham, an elderly Anglo-Indian schoolteacher living alone in Kolkata. Hungry for connection, she lends her flat to a former student and her boyfriend, only to be discreetly discarded once they no longer need her.

Sen turns this personal story into a perceptive study of invisibility. Through Violet, she captures the emotional isolation of old age and the fading place of the Anglo-Indian community in postcolonial India. The film’s restraint is its power: heartbreak arrives not through melodrama, but through the small cruelties of being forgotten.

Rejected by established producers, Sen eventually sent the script to Shashi Kapoor, who agreed to back the project. His support allowed her to make an unconventional, English-language drama without forcing it into mainstream commercial formulas. The result became a benchmark of Indian alternative cinema and announced Sen as one of the country’s most sensitive and assured filmmakers.

14. Pestonjee
Vijaya Mehta, India, 1988

Pestonjee follows Phirojshah and Pestonjee, two close friends whose bond is silently fractured by love, regret, and missed chances. When both men become linked to Jeroo, an arranged match first intended for Phirojshah, Pestonjee marries her instead. Phirojshah buries his feelings and remains close to the couple, but as years pass, the emotional strain between the three deepens into something tender, bitter, and unresolved.

A cult classic of Indian Parallel Cinema, Pestonjee offers a meticulous account of Parsi life in Bombay during the 1950s and 1960s. Theatre legend Vijaya Mehta brings a sharp eye to everyday customs, community rhythms, domestic tensions, and the subdued disappointments that shape adult life. Her approach is precise and humane, turning a love triangle into a larger meditation on companionship, loyalty, loneliness, and compromise.

The film is especially striking as a woman-directed study of male longing and self-deception. Mehta inspects how men project desire, judgment, and disappointment onto the women around them, while also exposing the fragility beneath their restraint. Produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India, Pestonjee became a major art-house achievement and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Mingmongkol Sonakul’s surreal road movie follows passengers on an overnight bus from Bangkok to Thailand’s Isan region. Soon after departure, the riders begin acting out the audio of a radio soap opera playing onboard, slipping into a melodramatic tale of romance, revenge, and Cinderella-like fantasy.

That strange conceit turns I-San Special into a witty, dreamlike collision of everyday life and mass entertainment. Sonakul places glossy soap-opera fantasy inside a cramped, rundown bus, exposing the gap between escapist media and the realities of class, labor, and rural migration. The result is playful, absurd, and sharply observant: a satire of Thai pop culture that finds something profound in the stories people use to survive ordinary life.

Written, directed, financed, and distributed by Sonakul, I-San Special stands as a courageous work of Thai independent cinema. Its unconventional depiction of modern Thailand earned a FIPRESCI Special Mention at the 2002 Singapore International Film Festival.

16. German + Rain (Japanese: ジャーマン＋雨; Jāman + Ame)
Satoko Yokohama, Japan, 2007

Satoko Yokohama’s offbeat debut centers on Yoshiko, a stubborn 16-year-old misfit in a small Japanese town who dreams of becoming a singer-songwriter. Mocked by those around her and stuck working as an assistant gardener, she barrels through life with abrasive confidence, teaching recorder lessons to three schoolboys while clinging fiercely to her creative ambitions.

Instead of framing Yoshiko as a victim or a conventional rebel, Yokohama gives us something stranger and more alive: a girl who refuses to become likable, quiet, or easy to categorize. German + Rain turns awkwardness into power, using deadpan humor and eccentric rhythms to push back against narrow expectations of girlhood, femininity, and success.

Self-produced with support from a CO2 grant, the film became Yokohama’s first theatrically released feature, earned a nationwide release, and won the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award. Scrappy, funny, and defiantly odd, German + Rain announced Yokohama as a major independent voice.

17. Carmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business
Helena Solberg, Brazil, 1995

Helena Solberg’s definitive documentary strips away the “Brazilian Bombshell” caricature to reveal Carmen Miranda as a brilliant, complicated artist caught between two cultures. The film traces Miranda’s rise from a modest childhood in Rio de Janeiro to her reign as Brazil’s biggest recording and screen star in the 1930s. After Broadway impresario Lee Shubert brought her to the United States, Miranda became a sensation, and by 1945, her fruit turbans, explosive stage presence, and Hollywood persona had made her the highest-paid female entertainer in America.

But that fame came at a brutal cost. In the United States, Miranda was reduced to a giddy, exoticized novelty. In Brazil, many saw her as a sellout who had traded cultural authenticity for American stardom. Solberg cuts through both myths, restoring Miranda’s talent, ambition, wit, and pain to the center of the story. What emerges is not a cartoon, but a woman trapped inside an image the world loved too much to let her escape.

Produced by Solberg and David Meyer, Carmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business blends archival footage, interviews, and stylized reenactments to reclaim an artist long buried beneath her own iconography. 18. Out of Phoenix Bridge (Chinese: 回到凤凰桥; pinyin: Huí dào fènghuáng qiáo)
Li Hong, China, 1997

Filmed over several years in cramped Beijing rooms, Out of Phoenix Bridge follows four young women from rural China who leave their village for the city in search of work, wages, and a brief measure of independence. Living together while working as maids and street vendors, they speak candidly about family pressure, marriage, money, desire, and the fragile freedom they have found between daughterhood and wifehood.

Li Hong captures that narrow window of autonomy with remarkable intimacy. The women’s lives are difficult and precarious, but the city also gives them space to imagine themselves beyond the roles waiting for them back home. Their stories reveal the painful collision between rural tradition and China’s rapid modernization, especially for women expected to obey, marry, and disappear into domestic life.

Widely regarded as a landmark of Chinese independent documentary cinema, Out of Phoenix Bridge is also an essential record of migrant women whose experiences were rarely seen with such honesty. Made outside the official studio system, the film remains a radical testament to work, womanhood, and self-determination under patriarchy.

19. The Apple (Persian: Sib)
Samira Makhmalbaf, Iran, 1998

The Apple recreates the real-life story of twin sisters Massoumeh and Zahra, who were kept locked inside their Tehran home for years by their father and blind mother. After neighbors alert welfare authorities, the girls are released into the outside world for the first time. Makhmalbaf blurs fiction and documentary by casting the real family as versions of themselves, turning a shocking news story into a haunting study of confinement, innocence, and awakening.

The result is both intimate and allegorical. On one level, The Apple follows two girls learning how to move through the world. On another, it becomes a harsh critique of patriarchal control, social neglect, and the systems that imprison women under the language of protection. Yet the film is not only about repression. It is also about curiosity, resilience, and the irrepressible human pull toward freedom.

Made when Makhmalbaf was just 17, The Apple became an international breakthrough and screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. With this debut, she emerged as one of the youngest filmmakers ever welcomed into Cannes’s official selection, announcing a fearless new voice in Iranian cinema.

20. Behind the Rainbow
Jihan El-Tahri, Egypt/South Africa, 2008

Behind the Rainbow traces the African National Congress from liberation movement to ruling party, using the fractured bond between Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma as its central thread. Once comrades in the anti-apartheid struggle, the two men become bitter rivals as Mandela’s dream of a nonracial democracy gives way to power battles, corruption, and competing visions for South Africa’s future.

El-Tahri cuts through the myth of the “Rainbow Nation” to examine what happens after victory. When a creative collaboration fades into memory, what remains? At its best, art leaves more than a body of work behind. It leaves an imprint on cinema, culture, and the people who carry its legacy forward. In Diamonds (Diamanti), his fifteenth feature, acclaimed Turkish-Italian director Ferzan Özpetek gathers eighteen of Italy’s finest actresses for a lavish, deeply affectionate tribute to the enduring magic of cinema.

Özpetek drew inspiration from his early years as an assistant director, when he visited Sartoria Tirelli, the storied Roman costume atelier closely associated with Piero Tosi and some of Italian cinema’s most iconic screen wardrobes. A co-production between GreenBoo Production, Faros Film, and Vision Distribution, Diamonds became Özpetek’s biggest commercial success to date, earning more than €16 million at the Italian box office and drawing over 2.1 million viewers. It also won the David degli Spettatori, the audience award at the 2025 David di Donatello Awards.

After its North American premiere at the 2025 Miami Film Festival and a later New York screening at Film at Lincoln Center’s Open Roads: New Italian Cinema, Diamonds received a limited U.S. theatrical release from Outsider Pictures on May 15, 2026.

Set between present-day Rome and the 1970s, Diamonds centers on the Canova sisters, Alberta (Luisa Ranieri) and Gabriella (Jasmine Trinca), who run a prestigious film and theater costume atelier. Their world is thrown into motion by a demanding commission connected to Oscar-winning costume designer Bianca Vega (Vanessa Scalera), whose exacting vision puts the entire workshop under pressure. What begins as a race to finish a single spectacular gown becomes something richer: a portrait of women creating beauty under impossible deadlines while holding their own lives together behind the seams.

Inside the atelier, every workstation carries its own drama. Head seamstress Nina (Paola Minaccioni) can command a room, yet she cannot reach her teenage son, who has barricaded himself away in his bedroom. Eleonora (Lunetta Savino), the embroiderer, clashes with her spirited niece Beatrice (Aurora Giovinazzo), while Carlotta (Nicole Grimaudo), the dyer, chases the perfect shade with almost spiritual devotion. Paolina (Anna Ferzetti), a milliner and single mother, quietly hides her young son in the shop because she has nowhere else to leave him.

Nicoletta (Milena Mancini), another seamstress, endures her husband Bruno’s abuse at home. Giuseppina (Sara Bosi), the newest apprentice, arrives wide-eyed and eager to belong. Sharp-tongued Fausta (Geppi Cucciari) gives the Canova workshop much of its backbone, while Silvana (Mara Venier), the cook, becomes its maternal heart, serving handmade pasta, hard-earned wisdom, and comfort in equal measure.

Özpetek widens the world with a constellation of supporting turns. Carla Signoris and Kasia Smutniak play rival divas whose egos threaten to overtake the room. Milena Vukotic appears as Aunt Olga, a guiding presence for the Canova sisters, while Giselda Volodi brings authority as a renowned theater costume designer. Loredana Cannata offers emotional warmth as Rita, and Elena Sofia Ricci appears as herself, bookending the story in the present day.

In less capable hands, an ensemble this large could dissolve into noise. Özpetek instead conducts it like a dinner-table symphony, giving each woman a distinct rhythm while allowing the whole chorus to shine. The result is not just a story about costumes, cinema, or female friendship, but a tribute to the hidden labor, artistry, and emotional intelligence that make great films possible.

At 135 minutes, Diamonds could have benefited from a slight trim, but its restless energy is also part of its charm. The large ensemble gives the film its fullness, allowing each character arc to add another thread to the larger tapestry. In the Iranian ghost town of Bad City, a lonely skateboarding vampire, played by Sheila Vand, stalks and punishes men who prey on women. An unlikely bond forms between her and Arash (Arash Marandi), a young man struggling to care for his father, who is battling addiction. Shot in stark, high-contrast black and white, Ana Lily Amirpour’s Farsi-language debut fuses film noir, crime drama, and the supernatural into what has often been called the first Iranian vampire western.

Amirpour blends Islamic, American, and cinematic influences into something wholly distinctive: a film that feels both familiar and startlingly new. Iranian-born British filmmaker Babak Jalali directs this deadpan dramedy from a script he co-wrote with Carolina Cavalli. Featuring an empathetic cast largely made up of first-time and nonprofessional performers, including Zada in her acting debut, Jalali offers a contemplative, wryly funny portrait of displacement, loneliness, and the search for belonging. Separated by decades but bound by pain, endurance, and buried family secrets, they spend their youth within the same weathered walls in the Altmark region, where the past refuses to stay hidden.

In her second feature, Mascha Schilinski co-writes and directs a haunting, expertly crafted story of memory and inherited trauma. The film follows four girls who never meet but share parallel experiences of fear, sexual exploitation, intense violence, and patriarchal control. Running more than two and a half hours and confronting deeply mature subject matter, this ambitious, enigmatic work uses an ominous recurring hum to evoke repression, silence, and the weight of what cannot be spoken.

Set in a quaint Massachusetts town in the 1990s, Eephus follows two recreational baseball teams, Adler’s Paint, led by Ed Mortainian (Keith William Richards), and the Riverdogs, captained by Graham Morris (Stephen Radochia), as they face off in one final game before their beloved field is demolished to make way for a new school. Over the course of a single day, tensions flare, jokes fly, and an era of camaraderie, routine, and escapism slowly gives way to an uncertain future.

Carson Lund’s pitch-perfect directorial debut is a touching, intimate portrayal of endings and the difficulty of letting go. On the surface, very little happens. Between pitches, the players argue, joke around, drift into memories, and occasionally make contact with the ball. But that is precisely the point. An eephus pitch is long, slow, and disarming, designed to interrupt timing and suspend expectation. Lund builds the entire film around that feeling: a frozen moment when friends say goodbye to people, places, and rituals that shaped their lives more earnestly than they realized.

Like an old photograph, Eephus captures the ache of a world slipping away. Everything plays as an affectionate elegy to the communities, institutions, and small shared traditions that hold people together, for better or worse. Through humor, warmth, and lived-in humanity, Lund turns one last game into a deeply nostalgic farewell to a bygone place and pastime.

Deceptively simple and beautifully unhurried, Eephus stands as one of the great hangout movies of recent years. Though masterfully directed and beautifully shot, Gomes’s transporting film may frustrate some viewers. Rather than drawing obvious connections between them, Gomes invites viewers to search for their own thematic links, even when those connections remain elusive. The result is a film where atmosphere often overtakes conventional storytelling, shifting between the nonsensical and the transcendent as the present seems to dissolve into the past.

A treasure for film historians and adventurous viewers, Grand Tour is an exhilarating, slow-burning epic about love, escape, and the strange poetry of movement. More a film to experience than decode, Gomes’s captivating odyssey marks a bold artistic leap in contemporary filmmaking.

Karim (Sami Slimane), the youngest, emerges as a radicalized revolutionary leader, clashing with his brothers: Abdel (Dali Benssalah), a respected soldier, and Moktar (Ouassini Embarek), a drug dealer, over how to respond to the family’s devastating loss.

Romain Gavras, known for his work with hip-hop icons Jay-Z and Kanye West, delivers a gripping political action thriller set in the Parisian banlieue, France’s most notorious housing projects. Through extended takes, extreme close-ups, and electrifying handheld camerawork, Gavras throws the audience headfirst into the chaos. The film’s ten-minute opening shot, captured in one continuous take, is a staggering technical achievement that truly has to be seen to be believed.

There, star performer Flamenco (Matías Catalán) and her dazzling companions, guided by the formidable Mama Boa (Paula Dinamarca), help care for 11-year-old orphan Lidia (Tamara Cortes). When a mysterious and deadly illness begins to spread, a local legend takes hold: it can be passed through a glance when two people fall in love. Surrounded by fear and suspicion aimed at her family, Lidia sets out to discover whether the myth is true.

Céspedes’ hauntingly mesmerizing debut casts an unforgettable spell. Working with remarkable precision and imagination, he uses magical realism and richly drawn characters to illuminate queer resistance, found family, and the triumph of empathy over fear. Over the past few years, the coming-of-age genre has surged in popularity, but too often, it feels unsatisfying. Many contemporary stories have drifted into a subcategory of Young Adult romance, where protagonists inhabit hyper-idealized worlds. Driven by infatuation and only minor obstacles, they almost always end up with the perfect partner. While these familiar narratives continue to draw audiences, some viewers, myself included, are craving something more honest: stories that reflect the real complexities and contradictions of growing up today.

Fortunately, film and television are beginning to shift. Young girls are increasingly depicted with depth, nuance, and honest vulnerability, moving beyond their traditional roles as love interests or side characters. Rather than centering flawless, romanticized figures, today’s storytelling foregrounds agency, self-discovery, and diverse perspectives, a shift that becomes especially striking when women are behind the camera.

These filmmakers craft sophisticated portrayals of adolescence, expanding the emotional range of the genre. Their work confronts the layered realities young girls face: a world that objectifies them, constrains their evolving identities, and imposes unrealistic standards of beauty, all within rigid, outdated social frameworks. At the same time, these deeply personal narratives also capture a quieter truth: how even younger children struggle to process overwhelming emotions without the tools or language to understand them.

Across these films, nine female filmmakers explore the inherent messiness, disorientation, and defiance of girlhood. Each offers a distinct, provocatively framed coming-of-age story, following young women from diverse backgrounds as they navigate unfamiliar realities, stories that bring rarely seen experiences vividly to the screen.

Miss Juneteenth, 2020

In this stirring American drama, Channing Godfrey Peoples examines the stark divide between the polished world of beauty pageants and the lived realities of single motherhood, set against the backdrop of the rural South’s economically strained Black communities.

Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, a former beauty queen and determined single mother in Fort Worth, Texas, fighting to build a better life for her rebellious teenage daughter, Kai (Alexis Chikaeze). When Turquoise urges Kai to enter the Miss Juneteenth pageant, a title she once held, she sees it as more than a competition. To her, the scholarship represents a second chance: the future she believes she never achieved.

Beharie delivers a magnetic, career-defining performance, anchoring Peoples’ intimate character study with emotional depth and restraint. Chikaeze is equally compelling as Kai, a defiant teenager navigating identity, independence, and the weight of expectations imposed by both her mother and society.
