This month’s newsletter has been put together with the help of Bethan and Thomas who did some work experience with me earlier in the month. So thank you Bethan and Thomas!

As my time as your MP hits the two-year mark, I wanted to start off this recap by sending a quick message to the people who matter most. You. The people of Swindon North. The ones that elected me to stand up for you in Parliament and I have never taken the trust you placed in me for granted.

As I have always said, my aim has been to look out for the best interests of our town and bring back well paid jobs. Over the past two years I have worked to bring about substantial changes to our town, from bringing in the largest Drone Testing facility in Europe, to fighting for changes to road safety legislation, direct links between Swindon and Oxford and I continue to work on working with schools and Swindon New College to bring a more comprehensive STEM offer to the town.

The Swindon Drone Hub - 2 Years in

As your MP, when I came into office there were no major plans for who would fill the many warehouses that were popping up throughout the town, including those at Panattoni. I initially reached out to a number of companies from housebuilders, green technology firms to even coca cola. I kept coming up against resistances and reasons Swindon didn’t 100% fit their mould. So I kept trying to find businesses who would deliver high quality jobs to our town and realised that whilst drone technology was being discussed, there wants a singular place that people thought of, or new to invest in if they were producing or wanting to produce drones. With the increase in defence spending and the many aspects I feel drones will fulfil into the future, I took the leap. After considerable efforts and many hundreds of meetings we landed the first company and soon after momentum started to build.

That’s the why we’re here, but why does it matter to you? It matters to those that are going to get jobs with the companies and their families, but more than that, the companies and MOD testing facility will contribute millions of pounds in business rates for SBC, so it can spend on your priorities. I’m also working with the drone companies, other technical businesses and New College to build a technology offer for advanced STEM education in our town. I want to grasp the opportunity this technology and investment provides for the whole town, to provide good jobs, a better educational offer and more community wealth. This is only the start and whilst there’s so much more to do, to deliver a brighter future for our town I hope this has helped explain the reasoning and the plan for the future

MOD indoor Drone Testing Facility

I’m proud to have announced the establishment of a brand-new MOD indoor drone testing facility at Panattoni park in Swindon alongside the Defence Secretary and Brigadier Sty Nasse. I’ve made it clear since being elected that getting defence investment in Panattoni is crucial to the long term development of the town. I’m excited to have secured the largest MOD defence investment in the Southwest this year. The MOD site at Panattoni park will become a world leading defence testing facility also it will provide plenty of job opportunities across Swindon and encourage yet more investment in the town. Constituency update

Harry Parker

After the CPS announced they would not be continuing proceedings against the driver who killed Harry, I knew I had to work with Harry’s parents to build a legislative legacy for their son. I worked closely with his family to bring forward the Harry Parker Bill, a 10-minute rule bill designed to bring in harsher penalties for those driving without a license or insurance. After this I worked with the Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, to bring forward the proposals into the government’s road safety strategy. I will continue this work to ensure a proper legislative legacy for Harry.

Pride in Penhill

The Pride in Penhill programme is progressing well. The Board have now had their first meeting and are gathering working groups together to discuss the key issues that matter to residents and how the £20m could address them. The working groups will cover the following areas and will have its launch event on the 12th August at 6pm at John Moulton Hall:

• Children, Young People & Families

• Community Health, Wellbeing & Inclusion

• Community Pride, Culture & Events

• Environment, Public Spaces & Neighbourhood Improvements

• Skills, Employment & Opportunity

On 23rd August, my office and the Central Swindon North Parish will be hosting a cultural festival at Moredon Sporting Hub from 12 - 5pm. It’s going to be a fun day of activities and celebrating the variety of cultures and activities that go on in Swindon North, so come along! Thames Water

Over the past few years I've seen firsthand the growing number of issues residents have had with Thames Water. That’s why I’ve come to the view that the only way to ensure the future of our water supply and sewerage treatment is to push for Nationalisation. The experiment of privatisation in this area has failed, with infrastructure not being upgraded in line with demand, sewerage being pumped into our rivers and customers experiencing mistake after mistake with their billing all whilst the company spent years providing dividends to shareholders. In my view it is wrong for companies to attempt to profit from such a fundamental as water and because it is such a fundamental the government will never be able to absolve responsibility for its management. I will be working with the government and making the case for nationalisation

Improving education for the next generation

One of my election pledges was to advance higher education and improve access to education in Swindon. I would like to thank Matt Butcher, Vice Principal Commercial, Skills and Partnerships at New College Swindon for working with me to make this happen. We are creating a pipeline of skills and opportunities to support the growth of the defence sector in our region. We have established a steering group made up of defence companies relocating to Swindon, bringing together industry expertise to help shape the vision, curriculum and future direction of the college. We recently hosted these businesses at Swindon College for a tour and collaborative curriculum planning session, ensuring that the training provided is aligned with the needs of employers and equips local people with the technical skills required for the future.

But I also wanted to catch the young people who are at risk of falling through the cracks and leaving education. Innov8 Academy is a partnership I helped facilitate between local charity BEST and Swindon College. Innov8 supports young people at risk of disengaging from education by building confidence, developing soft skills, and creating pathways back into education, employment and training (EET). With 6 out of 7 graduates already progressing into EET, I’m incredibly proud of the impact this programme is having and the opportunities it is creating for young people in our community. It was fantastic to have Minister Richards’ recognition of its success.

End to Greyhound Racing

I’ve long campaigned for an end to Greyhound racing and was pleased that following this public campaign, the tracks in Swindon have closed. These tracks were staying open entirely with online viewership, largely overseas, and in my view the welfare of the dogs in an industry like that is always second fiddle to profit. Therefore, I'm really pleased to see Swindon step away from the sport.

I’m delighted that Wales has now announced a ban. In 2023 alone, Wales saw a 44% increase in non-natural deaths among racing greyhounds, and there is now cross-party agreement that ending the sport is the right decision. Now it’s time for Westminster to follow suit.

Parliamentary Update

Renters Rights Act

The Renters Rights Act has banned all no-fault evictions as well as bringing new protections for renters. On top of this, the end of fixed-term tenancies mean that renters will have more flexibility and more security in their living situation. Landlords also have to comply with the Warms Home Standards, meet Awaabs law obligations to repair dangerous homes within a fixed timeframe and must provide reasonable reasoning behind restricting a pet in a property. All rents now have to be advertised openly and landlords are no longer able to accept offers that exceed this specified rent, which grants further protections to renters.

Workers Rights Act

The Employment Rights Act will end exploitative zero-hour contracts by introducing rights to guaranteed hours, payments for short-notice cancellation of shifts and making sure people receive reasonable notice of shifts. We are strengthening statutory sick pay and introducing new protections against the unfair dismissal reducing the timeframe on this from two years to six months. To secure these things, we are establishing the Fair Work Agency which will include powers to investigate a wider range of cases of labour abuse, issue penalties, and bring cases to the employment tribunal on the behalf of workers.

Two Child Benefit Cap

One of the most significant steps this Government has taken is lifting the two-child limit, the fastest and most cost-effective way to reduce child poverty. Around 60% of the families who will benefit are already in work, reflecting the reality that today nearly three-quarters of children living in poverty are in working households. Ministers have found no evidence that the previous policy influenced family size, so removing it is the right and fair decision.

Alongside retaining the benefit cap to support responsibility and encourage financial independence, the Government’s wider Child Poverty Strategy is helping parents into work by expanding childcare support, assisting with the cost of essentials, tackling temporary accommodation, strengthening Universal Credit work incentives, investing in employment support for disabled people and delivering a Youth Guarantee. Together, these measures will give more children the opportunities they deserve and are set to deliver the biggest reduction in child poverty over a Parliament since records began.

NHS & Childcare Investments

We are rebuilding our NHS with record investment, recruiting 2,000 more GPs, expanding urgent dental care, making it easier to book appointments online and bringing care closer to home through community pharmacies. More patients are now reporting positive experiences of GP and dental services, showing that our Plan for Change is already making a real difference. At the same time, we are backing working families with 30 hours of government-funded childcare for eligible parents of children aged nine months to four years, saving families up to £7,500 per child each year. Combined with a £2 billion investment in childcare providers and thousands of new nursery places, these reforms are helping parents get back into work, easing the cost of living and giving every child the best possible start in life.

Saving British Steel

On the 12th April 2025, the government set out to save British Steel from closure and through emergency legislation took control of the site. I was incredibly proud to be a part of a government that understands just how important it is to protect jobs and preserve our key national industries. The legislation passed Parliament and received sign off by the king in just over 6 hours and highlights how seriously this government takes the UK’s industrial heritage and future. I’m also pleased that now we’ve saved British Steel, we’re going to keep it going by utilising British Steel in future major infrastructure projects.

Establishing the All Party Parliamentary Group to Strengthen UK Defence Supply Chain

On the 28th April 2026 I launched and was elected as Chair of the new Cross-Party Parliamentary Group to Strengthen UK Defence Supply Chain.This group will bring together MPs and Peers from across party lines to take a hard look at the vulnerabilities in our defence supply chain and more importantly, what we do about them.

For Swindon, this matters. Our town has a proud industrial heritage, and reindustrialisation is central to its future. A stronger UK defence supply chain means real investment in British manufacturing, skilled jobs, and the kind of sovereign capability that keeps both our economy and our communities resilient. I want to make sure UK-led start-ups and scale-ups get the right signals to grow and that towns like Swindon are at the heart of that story, not left behind.

More Companies coming to Swindon

shadowlink’s founder Nathan has established his company in Swindon, I first met Nathan in July 2025 to hear his story from serving in the Rifles as I did, to the plans he had for his company. After a successful bid for MOD funding he’s now established his company here in Swindon and I’m thankful to him for his trust in my vision and recognition of how clear leadership and ambition is making Swindon the place to invest.

I’ve been especially impressed by his commitment to growing sovereign capability being a company set up in Britain for Britain, utilising local suppliers and partners to grow Swindon’s economy

On Tuesday 16^th June I also met Martyn of PrevTech, a family run engineering company, who looks to support the Drone Hub as they will be developing some exciting projects. Prevtech are also hiring! It was a great pleasure to chat with John Williams, who is the CEO and Founder of Allied, about how the UK and Europe can build a highly adaptive and scalable industrial base that can keeps pace with the rate of battlefield innovation. It was also lovely to connect with Will Rogers from ShieldAI. Will and I had an important conversation discussing: UK readiness, scaling sovereign autonomous capabilities for unmanned systems and the policy and regulatory changes that are needed to make it all happen. This involves a new ShieldAI Labs concepts that could open access to autonomy software for SMEs. I look forward to working to working with all mentioned in the future to increase national security and better the drone and defence industry!

Constituency update

Firstly, happy pride month to all members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I will always be an ally, not just this month but all year. If anyone feels like they need to get in touch due to an issue, please email will.stone.mp@parliament as my office will always be a safe space.

I had a busy yet exciting day on the 20^th June, Firstly, I paid a visit to celebrations of Armed Forces Day which was fantastic! It was amazing to see such a great turnout of people showing support for our wonderful Armed forces community. Despite not taking part in the push up challenge this year it was great fun to participate in the Longevity Games hang challenge! Next, I popped over to celebrate Sao Joao at Queens Park with the delightful Goan community. The event was packed full of lovely food and vibrant colours. Finally, I attended Swindon Comic-com at the steam railway museum which was fantastic. What a great day, a massive thank you to everyone involved in organising such brilliant events.

Thames Water

Recently, I took part in a significant scrutiny with Thames Water to hold them to account for their treatment of residents in Swindon North. Thames Water have been troubling me as you have brought up such as rising bills, poor infrastructure and investment returns and ongoing sewage problems. I will keep pushing because Swindon North to see real change and real value for the money they pay. I would also like to bring to your attention that if your annual water bill is 5% more than your net income, you may be entitled to financial support.

Innov8

I had a wonderful chat with Minister Richards this month who is Minister for Sentencing and Youth Justice about Innov8 academy which is run by BEST, a local charity, and Swindon College. We talked about the success and impact of Innov8 when it comes to supporting young people that are the furthest away from education and help them get back into education, employment and training (EET). So much as 6 out of 7 graduates from the programme are already progressing into (EET). I’m very proud of this programme at I cannot understate Its achievements, and it was great to have the endorsement of Minister Richards.

Parliamentary Update

Sir Keir Starmer

I’m sure you’ve heard the news that Keir Starmer has resigned as the leader of the Labour Party. I would like to send my deepest thanks to Prime Minister for everything he has done for me and our country. Sir Kier took on the toughest job in the entire country and worked tirelessly when doing so. He led our party working to stabilise the economy, has lifted half a million children out of poverty and he’s personally helped me to deliver jobs here in Swindon. The Prime Minister is a man of honour and kindness, and I will be forever thankful to him for all the positive changes he made to our party which ultimately led us to our first general election win in 14 years in 2024. Thank you Keir.

Social Media Ban

I’m proud to announce that me and my party have successfully introduced the social media ban for under 16s in the United Kingdom which will come into effect in Spring 2027. I voted in favour of the ban as I strongly believe that children and young people should be sufficiently protected online from bullying, harmful content and exploitation. As we have already seen to many children fall victim to this. I firmly believe that this ban will positively impact the mental health of children across the country. New housing information!

I would also like to inform you on changes made to housing and rented policy. Local councils have been granted the power to issue fines up to £7000 to landlords who fail to address serious health and safety hazards in rented properties. I hope this information is of good use to those reading who this may apply to.

Other news

This month I have been, and certainly proud to be, elected as a voting member for the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe. We live in a time where geopolitics is so unpredictable, it is vital that we work together as a collective across Europe to strengthen our relationship. It will be a great pleasure to work alongside the other 57 MPs from across Europe with a mandate to protect UK interests by promoting democratic stability, human rights and military transparency across Europe and Eurasia.

The Swindon Drone Hub

Apprenticeships at STARK!

Recently, I met with the heads of two revolutionary tech companies: Grenadyr and MindFoundry. MindFoundry is using AI to develop our defence capabilities and ensure our national security, and Grenadier is a Major player in the modernisation of warfare, currently being tested on the battlefields of Ukraine.

Grenadier is looking to expand its business outward, and I have been Pitching Swindon as a worthy place to invest. I am confident that more companies will choose Swindon as their home, creating many more jobs into the future.

STARK, has just recently opened up to its first cohort of new apprenticeships! This is a really helpful opportunity to those looking to pursue a career in engineering and it was great to join Mike Armstrong to discuss how we get more young people from Swindon into STEM. I look forward to working toward more educational opportunities and apprenticeships in our town moving forward.

Continuity with the Conservatives

This month, I have been putting in a lot of work vouching for investment in swindon with some of the big tech companies currently working to modernise warfare and help improve our national security. and I have recently had an agreement with Gary Sumner that as the new leader of Swindon Borough Council he will continue to support my initiative to bring in more well paid, skilled jobs into the town.

Pride in Penhill Chair Announcement & Board Recruitment

I’m incredibly proud to announce that Charlotte Beckhurst, Headteacher at Swindon Academy, will be taking up the role of Chair for the Pride in Penhill programme.

Having someone as impressive as Charlotte on board to Chair the Pride in Penhill programme gives me incredible confidence in the success of Pride in Penhill delivering what matters most to the residents of Penhill. Charlotte is a strong individual with a track record of delivery throughout her educational career, I know she will listen to people across Penhill and lead the board recruitment and chair it with integrity.

Charlotte also has the strength of character to stand up for the people of Penhill outside of political influence and I look forward to working alongside her and the board as it’s established over the coming weeks. Once the board is established I look forward to robust conversations with the people of Penhill to hear and learn how they want their money spent.

Recruitment has now opened for a new neighbourhood board, which will decide how the £20 million investment is allocated. We’re looking for people who live or work in Penhill, as well as those with strong links to the area. It’s really important to me that decisions aren’t made by politicians but the community. At least 51% of the board has to be local residents and I hope to make sure that the membership truly reflects multiple ages and perspectives.

Pick, Plant & Pizza Day

We held an event on the 29th of May as part of the Pride in Penhill programme. The initiative was designed to bring together people from the community toward a shared project and hear their ideas about Pride in Penhill. Our aims were to help clean the area by picking litter, planting bulbs, and, of course eating pizza! We will most definitely be putting on more community-building events such as this in the future, as a part of the ‘Pride in Place’ programme so keep an eye out for those.

Swindon-Oxford Train Service

It was great to be there for the launch of the first Swindon-Oxford direct train on the 18th of May. after a lot of campaigning along with Heidi Alexander (of which I was the first to do, quite a few years ago). we are so pleased to have this secured for good.

This will encourage massive growth and allow for easier transit between the 2 areas, with far more efficiency, likely raising the amount of visitation to swindon. the benefits of this are not to be understated! We look forward to seeing the effects of this on the future of swindon.

Parliamentary Update

Great British Summer Savings!

Brilliant news for Swindon residents this summer! The government have announced the ‘great British summer savings’ package of support which will ensure people can maximise their summer whilst the great weather lasts.

The summer of savings package starts 25th June and ends on the 1st September 2026 and encompasses a package of support across a range of areas like:

• VAT to be cut from 20% to 5% on the following

  • Children’s meals served in restaurants for consumption on the premises — defined as meals served from a children’s menu and marketed, presented and priced as children’s meals.

  • Children’s and family tickets for cinema, theatre, exhibitions, shows and concerts

  • Admission tickets — for both children and adults — to attractions such as amusement parks, fairs, circuses, museums, zoos, adventure parks, soft play and observation attractions

• Removed Tariffs on 125 everyday essentials to reduce costs at the supermarket

• Free bus fares for children aged 5 - 15 this August

• Freezing Fuel Duty and uprating the fuel claim rate to 55p a mile, up from 45p.

Disabilities Rights Survey

Disability rights uk have launched the first comprehensive review of PIP, via a survey of people’s experiences with the programme. this is a part of the government’s review by Minister Timms.

If you are a constituent with a disability, please speak up, your voice on this matter is deeply valuable, and your submissions will help build a case on PIP based on what you have actually experienced.

Poland - Defence24Days & The Swindon Drone Hub

Over the recess I attended Defence24Days in Poland to represent the UK at what is a key defence conference among NATO allies. I spoke on a panel about strengthening strategic deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank, moderated by retired Lt General Andrzej Falkowski PHD and joined by fellow panelists Dr Karolis Aleska (Deputy Minister for National Defence of Lithuania), Kevin Thievon (Representative of NATO from France), Lieutenant General Sir Ralph Woodisse (Commander of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps) and Andrew Michta (Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Centre for Strategy and Security).

On the Panel we discussed the importance of strengthening our deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank as well as how the UK could support this through scaling up our manufacturing base. I pointed to the work we’re doing in Swindon to rebuild a manufacturing base in our town and the positives this brings in terms of jobs and security.

I came away from Defence24Days having made a number of new contacts both in Poland and UK manufacturers and pushed for Swindon as the place for expansion. I look forward to seeing more manufacturing come to our town and will continue to represent the UK at important events like these when needed.

SDO - Swindon Defence Networking

It was a real pleasure to be asked to be the keynote speaker at the first Unmanned Systems Network conference of over 250 companies at STEAM on the 24th April. The event brought together SMEs with large companies, the MOD and local recruiters all organised by the incredible team at SDO Associates. The event marks a symbol of the work I’ve been doing to bring in Drone companies and businesses that support their supply chain. This work is about bringing back advanced manufacturing and creating jobs across our town and developing an ecosystem that support the town and its people.

I can’t wait to continue working with SDO Associates, STARK, TEKEVER and DMC as we continue to put on more of these events to bring in more jobs and build even greater interest and investment in our town.

Constituency update

Local Elections

There’s no denying that the local elections were difficult for my party. Although here in Swindon we maintained a good number of councillors we lost incredible colleagues who’d put everything into looking after the residents in their wards. With the new make-up of the Council; Conservatives on 23 seats, Labour 19 and Reform 14 I hope we will continue to be able to work toward delivering for the people of Swindon, and that each of these parties will offer their support for the Drone Hub and key investments like the Entertainment venue in the town centre.

In the aftermath of the local elections, the political instability we’ve seen in Westminster in my view does nothing for the people of Swindon, what we need in Parliament is a strong government able to deliver on the things that matter. The people of Swindon need a government that can deliver on reducing the burden of the cost of living, rebuild our manufacturing base and provide a brighter future for the next generation. My focus is now and always will be Swindon and its people. I will continue to work toward that end by; engaging with business, expanding Swindon’s drone hub and supporting constituents.

Swindon-Oxford Train Service

I was pleased to see GWR confirm recently their intention to put on a direct Swindon to Oxford Passenger train that will allow daily travel between the two areas. This is something I’ve been campaigning on since the 27th March 2025 and I’d like to express my thanks to the Transport Secretary and GWR for making it a reality. I’ve spoken to so many people who will benefit from this addition to the network, from students studying at Oxford Brookes to business looking to grow their links to partners in Oxford this line will be a great boost for our towns growth.

Fundraiser for the RBL Stratton Club

I am raising money to support The Club Stratton Royal British Legion in Swindon. Being an ex-Rifleman, the Royal British Legion is close to my heart.It is the last Royal British Legion club in the town, and we are looking to raise £20,000 to support the club with ongoing building maintenance costs.

The club supports many people across the Swindon and Wiltshire area. Please dig deep and donate to help keep it alive.

Parliamentary Update

The Kings Speech

The King’s Speech had some really important announcements that will make a real difference for people here in Swindon and right across the country.

First, on keeping us safe, the Government is bringing forward a new Bill to tackle threats from hostile foreign states. Espionage, sabotage and interference from overseas are very real dangers and it’s great to see the Government taking this seriously. I’ll be working hard to make sure this legislation is as strong as possible to genuinely protect our communities from overseas influence .

But there was also brilliant news for local businesses. The Government is cutting red tape, reducing the administrative burden on businesses by 25%. That means less time filling in forms and more time actually running a business. They’re also making the rules clearer and fairer, so larger clients pay small businesses for their work when it’s delivered, late payments are currently costing the UK economy £11 billion . New Rules to Stop New Council Homes Being Sold Off

I was delighted to see the Government take decisive action to protect council housing stock with new Right to Buy reforms. Under the new rules, tenants will need to live in their home for a decade before becoming eligible to purchase, and landlords will no longer be able to snap up council homes at a discount and profit from renting them back out.

This is a vital step in rebuilding the housing stock that was depleted under the previous Government, and I know how much it will mean to so many people in our community who are on waiting lists and desperately need a home. These changes will help ensure that council homes remain available for the families who need them most, rather than disappearing into the private rental market, and I'm proud to see the Government delivering on its commitment to protect and grow our social housing for generations to come.

Establishing the All Party Parliamentary Group to Strengthen UK Defence Supply Chain

on the 28th April I launched and was elected as Chair of the new Cross-Party Parliamentary Group to Strengthen UK Defence Supply Chain.

This group will bring together MPs and Peers from across party lines to take a hard look at the vulnerabilities in our defence supply chain and more importantly, what we do about them.

For Swindon, this matters. Our town has a proud industrial heritage, and reindustrialisation is central to its future. A stronger UK defence supply chain means real investment in British manufacturing, skilled jobs, and the kind of sovereign capability that keeps both our economy and our communities resilient.

I want to make sure UK-led start-ups and scale-ups get the right signals to grow and that towns like Swindon are at the heart of that story, not left behind.

Swindon Drone Hub

Neros UK

Neros UK are setting up in Swindon and have stated their intention to invest £10m over the next five years in our town. The company has been supporting Ukraine in its defence by supplying drones and innovating new technologies. I’m pleased that the Swindon Drone Hub is attracting another high value company to Swindon whose focus is on expanding British Sovereign capability and a commitment to invest in the skills of our local workforce.

Prolinx

As a UK sovereign SME operating across multiple government security classifications, Prolinx combines agility with high-assurance delivery supporting organisations that depend on secure collaboration, mission-critical platforms, applications, and sensitive data hosting at OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE and SECRET. All while ensuring full jurisdictional control under UK legislation .whilst growing key technical digital engineering skills in the Swindon workforce through apprenticeships and training.

This is particularly vital for UK Critical National Infrastructure, where resilience, security, and trust are essential. Prolinx is a strong example of how innovative British SMEs are delivering secure, sovereign capability at scale.

MyDefence

As global leaders in soldier-borne Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), MyDefence are driving innovation with a soldier-first ethos, protecting infantry on the ground from drone attacks. As a former Rifleman it's so important that we protect soldiers and I'm really pleased to welcome MyDefence to the Swindon Drone Hub. Their addition marks the 7th Drone Company setting up in our town since I was elected.

Swindon and Wiltshire Wealth Fund

When I was elected, I made three pledges:

• To bring industry back to Swindon following the closure of Honda.

• To establish a university hub, as Swindon has one of the lowest levels of further and higher education participation in the country.

• To open a dedicated mental health hub for our community.

As we succeed in attracting new companies to Swindon, it is vital that their social value and charitable contributions are rooted here too. That is why I recently met with the Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation — a remarkable organisation that has spent 51 years helping individuals and businesses give back to their local communities.

They ensure funding reaches where it is needed most, supporting local charities and trusts so they can continue their vital work long into the future. I look forward to seeing even more of the positive impact they make in helping the people of Swindon thrive.

Constituency update

£20m for a theatre in Swindon & the Chancellor in Swindon

After some initial discussions with the Chancellor I was really pleased to see her commit to Swindon through the Growth Mission Fund, providing £20m for a new entertainment venue on the site of the old bus station. The pitch to the Chancellor was a joint one between me, Heidi Alexander and Jim Robbin’s Council who have worked hard to develop a plan the treasury had faith in. This new entertainment venue will be backed by £20m of Council funding, paid off over time by recouping the costs of the yearly maintenance of the Wyvern Theatre.

I see this investment in an entertainment venue as a key step in revitalising the town centre and am keen to continue working alongside a Labour Council and Heidi to do more to rebuild our town.

On Tuesday the 31st March Jim Robbins and I welcomed the Chancellor to Swindon where she presented Jim with £101m cheque, symbolising the extra money this Labour government have directly given to Swindon:

• £20m for Pride in Penhill

• £20m for Pride in Walcot East

• £20m for the Entertainment Venue

• £28m extra funding for SBC

• £13m for roads and tackling potholes

Pride in Penhill

The Pride in Penhill Programme had it’s first Let’s Talk event recently and the learnings from the event were really interesting with over 40 people attending and exploring the things that matter most to them. The Pride in Place Programme is a real opportunity for the people of Penhill to create a neighbourhood board that entirely decides how the £20m should be spent.

Initial ideas focussed on:

1. More Youth Provision

   1. Life skills

   2. Activities in Day & Evening

   3. Youth decision making

2. Protecting & improving green spaces

3. Cleaning up litter, rubbish and fly tipping

4. Better communication and outreach opportunities

Haydon Wick Community surgery

It was great to speak to residents alongside Cllr Stanka Wilson and Cllr Ravi Venkatesh in Haydon Wick recently. We covered a number of topics and I look forward to my next community surgery after the local elections.

Parliamentary Update

Standing up for animals and pet owners

Greyhound racing is something I have long opposed, and for the past two years I have campaigned for it to be banned. A visit to the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Burford confirmed my fears: greyhounds racing in places like Swindon are often abandoned once they stop making money.

Around 83% of racing greyhounds come from Ireland, with 15,000 dogs bred each year and a further 5,000 imported. Too many are treated as disposable commodities. If they aren’t fast enough, some are culled before even being recorded. Their racing careers last just 3–5 years, despite the fact they can live up to 15. When profits end, many face grim outcomes, including being shipped abroad, sold for meat, or having their ears cut off to remove ID tags.

The industry causes serious harm. In 2024 alone, 109 dogs were killed on the track. Many greyhounds spend up to 95% of their lives confined to kennels, often muzzled, leading to severe stress and suffering.

I’ve raised this issue in Parliament, including with the Under-Secretary of State for Wales, and followed this up with a meeting with her and her team. I’ve also spoken publicly, including on LBC’s Cross Question, about my commitment to improving animal welfare and protecting greyhounds.

I’m delighted that Wales has now announced a ban. In 2023 alone, Wales saw a 44% increase in non-natural deaths among racing greyhounds, and there is now cross-party agreement that ending the sport is the right decision. Now it’s time for Westminster to follow suit.

And its great news for Pet owners who will benefit from biggest vet sector reforms in 60 years. Prescription fees limited to £21, Comparison website to help you choose your vet and Vets must publish prices. The reforms help households understand what they are paying for, avoid unexpected costs and choose the best value care for their pets.

Embassy of Ukraine

Following successful talks between the Prime Minister and President Zelenskyy, the UK and Ukraine have agreed to deepen their partnership, combining Ukrainian expertise with the UK’s industrial strength to produce drones and other defence capabilities.

It was therefore a real honour to meet Ukrainian members of parliament Lesia Vasylenko and Yehor Cherniev and engage directly with Ukrainian political and business leaders at today’s roundtable.

The deal includes a £500,000 UK investment in an AI centre of excellence in Kyiv to advance battlefield applications, alongside closer defence cooperation with international partners to strengthen global security.

The two countries have also signed a new agreement on civil space collaboration, marking a significant step in their growing scientific and technological ties.

By strengthening these partnerships, we are supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression while preparing the UK and its allies for future challenges.

Continuing defence policy talks in Parliament

In the past month I hosted two Defence policy roundtables. The first on Autonomy and AI-Enabled Systems with Defence Connect, and spoke alongside ARX Robotics UK CEO David Roberts, Director of GRAIL at Tiberius Aerospace, and Air Commodore Blythe Crawford CBE.

We discussed the value of autonomy on the modern battlefield and how, as a country of 70 million, it helps ensure we can punch above our weight. We also covered the importance of industry–government collaboration, and the lessons we have learned from the war in Ukraine and now the conflict in Iran.

In addition, I hosted Zelim’s Chief Strategy Officer Andrew Tipping to talk to SMEs on the NATO DIANA programme, brought together by IoT Tribe.

We heard directly from founders and technical leaders about the realities of taking defence and dual-use technologies to market — the challenges, trade-offs, and ambitions involved in building solutions where performance truly matters. Zelim, a former UKDI-funded company and part of the NATO DIANA 2025 cohort, showcased how AI-enabled maritime safety systems can detect man-overboard incidents, track people in the water, and support rapid rescue in high-stakes environments.

Swindon Drone Hub

Defence Academy of the United Kingdom

I recently visited the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, a shining example of the expertise embedded within our armed forces. I also met with members of Cranfield University to discuss the training opportunities they could provide to feed into my mission of re-industrialising Swindon into the drone manufacturing hub of the UK.

Alongside this, I met with a number of businesses who are keen to come to Swindon and look forward to some exciting announcements on this soon!

Constituency update

University of Bath

It was great to visit the University of Bath and see how varied and incredible the work they’re doing is for the region, and especially how it can have a positive impact on Swindon.

First, I met with the University of Bath student drone team, who build and develop their own drones to compete against teams from across the world. They’ve won an impressive number of trophies, and I look forward to bringing talents like them to Swindon.

I then met with the Academic outreach team and raised the importance of supporting young people in Swindon through their GCSE’s and A-Levels so that they can attend amazing institutions like bath and was pleased to see the University’s commitment to this, highlighting work at Swindon Academy. We also discussed how the University of Bath can add to Swindon’s economic future through expanding workforce skills through short courses and deeper engagement with our town.

Following this, I met with the Mental Health Research group to discuss interventions for young people and am pleased to see this group commit to supporting people in Swindon, especially with dealing with the aftermath of spice-laced vapes. As well as how Jiu-jitsu can improve mental and physical resilience.

Next, I saw some of the incredible work the University are doing to support veterans’ rehabilitation through their CAMERA system as well as prepare the next generation of recruits through monitoring an individual’s gait and weaknesses to enhance training and success rates. With this technology, I see a number of uses for the NHS and other services and am keen to work with the University as it develops.

Finally, I visited the University’s Sports Training Village, an impressive facility home to a number of Olympians and also where one of my former Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students now trains the next generation in Jiu-Jitsu.

Overall, I’m incredibly keen to work with institutions like the University of Bath to develop more opportunities for the people of Swindon.

Firstport & Sovereign Network Group

Last month I raised a number of issues with both Firstport and Sovereign Network Group, two large social housing providers within Swindon North. We agreed a number of actions relating to individual cases to seek improvements for residents who have contacted me and my office in need of support. More widely, we also agreed a way of working going forward to speed up responses to residents.

Abbey Meads Dental Centre

I attended the official opening of the new Abbey Meads dental practice building, including a number of upgrades and improvements. Ebrahim gave a truly inspiring talk about the work he and his team have been doing over the past 20 years, including an initiative to provide free screenings for primary school aged children across the town.

I saw not only the passion of great dentists but also a plan to improve dentistry across our town and country, and I look forward to celebrating the work of Abbey Meads Dental Centre in the coming weeks and months but also working with NHS partners and passionate people like Ebrahim and Soheila to improve dentistry care.

Parliamentary Update

Harry Parker - Road Safety Consultation

This month has been a busy return to Parliament, with the launch of the Road Safety Strategy consultation. I was really pleased to see that two key amendments that I’ve been working on, initially as part of the Harry Parker Bill are being included in the consultation. These amendments would expand the available options for prosecution for the offence of failing to stop and also expand penalties for unlicensed drivers.

This is a major step forward in honouring Harry Parker and a huge achievement for his parents, Adam and Kelly, and I’d be grateful to everyone who’d be willing to fill out the consultation and support the amendments.

Ground Rent and Leasehold

Last month also saw the government bring forward their ground rent cap proposals, which would cap ground rent at £250 for 40 years before bringing it down to a peppercorn rent. I know this will mean a great deal for a number of residents in Swindon North who are either above the £250 cap and will see it reduced, or those concerned that their ground rent could rise. This means that ground rents will become cheaper over time as wages rise and as inflation meets our 2% target.

There are over 7,000 properties in Swindon North which operate under leasehold, including many flats, and the reforms announced by the government will also make it easier for flats to become commonhold properties, whilst also instituting a ban on future leasehold flats, making commonhold the norm.

As a member of the APPG for Leasehold Reform, I’m incredibly pleased to see the examples I’ve shared with the government around flats and those of my APPG colleagues being taken seriously and actions on this vital issue brought forward.

Road Safety and Ground Rent caps are two major announcements from the government in the last month that reflect how we can bring about positive change when we work together to right historic wrongs.

A win for Pet Owners

As a proud owner of a cat and a dog, I know how important pets are to families. I have been really proud to back our government’s work on animal welfare, including legislation such as the Renters’ Rights Bill, which makes it easier for renters to keep their pets.

This month I intervened in the Westminster Hall debate on the Animal Welfare Strategy for England to call for regulation and greater transparency when it comes to what vets can charge. There is a growing desire for clearer pricing for common services, capped prescription charges, and transparency around practice ownership.

I was therefore very pleased to see a few weeks later that the government will be delivering the biggest reforms to the veterinary sector in 60 years.

Christmas Message

As we approach the end of 2025, I want to take a moment to thank everyone across Swindon for your support, kindness, and community spirit this year. Christmas is a time to reflect on what we’ve achieved together and what we have to look forward to moving into 2026!

This year has brought real progress for our town. From new jobs and investment in advanced industries, to regeneration projects that will make Swindon greener, fairer, and better for everyone. I’ve been proud to stand up in Parliament for local people, whether on housing, veterans rights, or animal rights issues.

But most of all, I’ve been inspired by the everyday acts of generosity I see in our community. Neighbours looking out for one another, volunteers giving their time, and local organisations working tirelessly to support those in need. That spirit is what makes Swindon special.

As we celebrate with family and friends, let’s also remember those who may be struggling, and commit ourselves to building a town where everyone feels secure and supported.

Constituency update

TEKEVER and STARK setting up in Swindon:

This year has seen the establishment of TEKEVER, STARK, Flyby Technologies and Munin Dynamics in Swindon. I promised in my election that I would bring jobs back to our town and I meant it. That’s why i’m really pleased to see over 1,000 advanced manufacturing roles coming into the town as a result of the work I’ve been doing to build Swindon into a centre of drone excellence. I will continue to work to bring in more jobs in 2026 and expand the work to include greater apprenticeship and educational opportunities.

Oxford - Swindon Railway

I’ve been campaigning to establish direct trains between both Oxford and Swindon, creating a daily route between our two areas. This route will be great for passengers and businesses, improving access to goods and services and educational opportunities between Oxford and Swindon. I’m excited to see this delivery progress next year.

Progress on the Swindon Plan:

This year, as a part of the £6.5 million scheme, we saw major progress. There will be more than 100 council homes upgraded in Swindon to improve energy efficiency, which will be a win-win for the environment and the people living in these houses to save on energy costs.

There was also progress in the Greener Swindon plan, with thousands of trees being planted across the borough- boosting sustainability and green spaces throughout our town.

Investments secured for Swindon

Over the last year I’ve been working flat out to secure investment in Swindon, not only from the Private Sector but also through government and am proud that over this last year we’ve secured millions of pounds worth of individual direct investment into our town, including £20m for the Penhill Pride in Place project which I look forward to working on further in 2026. We’ve also received investment through the funds Swindon Borough Council have received from central government, as well the regional bonuses we’re a part of, for example the extra GP’s funded across the BANES ICB, or other pot funds.

Parliamentary Update

This past year has been one of meaningful action and real progress, delivering change where it matters most. From housing and employment to education and the cost of living, we are putting fairness, security, and opportunity at the heart of government.

Housing:

The Renters Rights Act has banned all no-fault evictions as well as bringing new protections for renters. On top of this, the end of fixed-term tenancies mean that renters will have more flexibility and more security in their living situation. Landlords also have to comply with the Warms Home Standards, meet Awaabs law obligations to repair dangerous homes within a fixed timeframe and must provide reasonable reasoning behind restricting a pet in a property. All rents now have to be advertised openly and landlords are no longer able to accept offers that exceed this specified rent, which grants further protections to renters.

Employment:

The Employment Rights Act will end exploitative zero-hour contracts by introducing rights to guaranteed hours, payments for short-notice cancellation of shifts and making sure people receive reasonable notice of shifts. We are strengthening statutory sick pay and introducing new protections against the unfair dismissal reducing the timeframe on this from two years to six months. To secure these things, we are establishing the Fair Work Agency which will include powers to investigate a wider range of cases of labour abuse, issue penalties, and bring cases to the employment tribunal on the behalf of workers.

Education:

Phase one of the nursery capital grant had already created up to 6000 new nursery places when it was introduced, and phase two is expanding this grant to at least 300 new or expanded school-based nurseries, creating even more places for the 26/27 academic year.

We’ve also invested a further £80 million to onboard approximately 2000 more schools in the free breakfast club scheme. These free 30 minute breakfast clubs ensure that pupils are ready everyday to learn, which in turn improves behaviour, attendance, and attainment.

Cost of Living:

Our Child Poverty Strategy also set out measures which will boost family incomes, reduce the cost of essentials, and ensure stronger local support.

We are scrapping the two benefit cap. This means that extra benefit payments for third and subsequent children will no longer be stopped. This change will lift 450,000 children out of poverty by the end of parliament.

As always, it’s been a busy month and sorry for the late update, substack helpfully didn’t send out the newsletter last week. But never mind that, I’m continuing to make progress in promoting Swindon as the UK’s leading hub for drone manufacturing, helping to create more jobs and drive positive change in our town. I also want to share some of the other important work I’ve been doing in Parliament on renters’ rights, the two-child benefit cap, knife crime, domestic abuse, and gambling harms. In addition, I’m pleased to highlight the excellent work being done at Oxford Brookes’ University and share the exciting news from Midlands Railway.

Parliamentary Update

Passing the Renters Rights Bill

This month, I voted for the final version of the Renters Rights Bill, now heading for Royal Assent. The Bill is a major step forward for renters, giving tenants greater protection, stability, and fairness.

Key measures include:

• Ending Section 21 evictions and moving all tenancies to a periodic model, giving tenants more security and freedom to challenge unfair practices.

• Capping excessive rent increases and allowing tenants to appeal above-market rises designed to force them out.

• Creating a Private Rented Sector Ombudsman for fast, fair resolution of tenant complaints.

• Strengthening tenants’ rights to keep pets, which landlords must reasonably take into consideration.

• Applying ‘Awaab’s Law’ to require landlords to fix serious hazards within set timeframes.

• Banning discrimination against tenants with children or on benefits.

• Outlawing rental bidding so landlords can’t accept offers above the advertised rent.

• Boosting local authority enforcement with stronger powers and reporting duties.

Fighting for an end to the two child benefit cap

I co-signed a letter alongside over 100 other Labour MPs. We have written to share our desire to see the removal of the two child benefit cap. The cap places an undue burden on children, and if lifted, would bring 400,000 children out of poverty. I was elected on a manifesto to reduce child poverty and believe the removal of the cap is one of the most effective ways to deliver on that promise.

Knife crime debate

I highlighted the tragic murders of two young men from Swindon: 18-year-old Owen Dunn and Lee Turner. In their memory, their families founded the organisations Owen’s World and Change Lives No to Knives, which focus on education, prevention, and community safety through initiatives, such as school outreach, bleed kits, and amnesty bins. Having worked with both organisations, I wanted to take this opportunity to share their work in Parliament and emphasise the importance of rebuilding trust between communities and the police to help tackle knife crime at the root.

Scrapping the fee for ‘persons at risk of violence’ PARV

I was pleased to see the Ministry of Justice has accepted a recommendation that I’ve been campaigning for; to remove the fee to remove victims of domestic abuse addresses from the public register.

Often escaping with little more than the clothes on their backs, survivors frequently face a heavy financial toll, on top of the inevitable emotional burden. Scrapping the £318 fee for a ‘persons at risk of violence’ (PARV) order will help survivors access financial support without putting themselves at risk of a violent ex-partner finding out where they live.

Gambling levies

Along with over 100 of my colleagues, I have co-signed a letter to the Chancellor to ask for increased gambling levies on online gambling, and ring fence that money to end the two child benefit cap. The gambling industry has changed, moving much of its operations abroad, replacing a large part of its business model with online gambling. Introducing these recommendations would make gambling taxes fairer and help to reduce poverty.

Visiting Oxford Brookes’ Swindon campus

It was great to visit Oxford Brookes’ Swindon campus with Heidi Alexander MP to meet the nursing team and have a tour of their clinical skills laboratory, where students train using virtual reality (VR) patients and simulation dummies. I even tried the VR headset to see how technology helps prepare students for real placements.

Oxford Brookes’ nursing team ranks in the top 10 nationally for children’s nursing and midwifery. It’s fantastic that Swindon is training the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Midlands Railway hub

I am excited to announce that work is underway to deliver 130 extra trains per week between Swindon and Birmingham, equating to one train per hour.

The scheme will deliver over two million extra seats every year for passengers between Swindon and Birmingham also stopping at Bromsgrove, Worcestershire Parkway, Ashchurch for Tewkesbury, Cheltenham Spa, Stonehouse, Stroud and Kemble.

This is expected to result in 12,750 new jobs and over 200 apprenticeships.

Introduction - This month’s newsletter will focus on the work i’ve been involved in since the end of the Recess. Whilst we’re moving into conference season i’m really pleased that some of the hard work i’ve been up to behind the scenes is starting to pay off.

Swindon’s Drone Cluster

Over the past year, i’ve dedicated myself to securing new employment for the people of Swindon, with 800 jobs announced so far. We all know just how devastating the loss of Honda and other major manufacturers has been for the town. When I came into office, although we had an abundance of land within the town that could be used by business there had been no guiding light on how to bring business to the town. I saw this challenge as an opportunity, one where we could take advantage of the government’s commitment to raise Defence spending to 2.5% by 2026 and bring back high-skilled jobs to a town with a proud military, innovation and manufacturing history.

TEKEVER

About 6 months ago I learnt that TEKEVER were seeking to expand their operations in the South West. A number of regions were being considered but i’d not heard Swindon mentioned despite our excellent links to areas right across the country and our skilled workforce. That’s why I and the Swindon Borough Council inward investment team concocted a plan to show TEKEVER that swindon was much more than a warehouse town, it would be the Drone Hub of the UK.

To convince them I invited the TEKEVER CEO to Swindon, scouted the Spectrum building and co-ordinated with the inward investment team to ensure that Swindon was open and ready for TEKEVER’s arrival. After my direct involvement with both the Council’s inward investment team and TEKEVER I was really pleased that they chose to expand their UK operations to Swindon as part of their £400m Overmatch programme, bringing 400 high skilled jobs to the old Renault building.

FLYBY

Alongside TEKEVER, FLYBY have announced they will be setting up in Swindon to bring forward 300 jobs, 85 jobs in just the first 6 months and a plan to set up a factory in the town. FLYBY are at the cutting edge of drone technology and previously supported the NHS in delivering medicines to remote areas of the Isle of Wight and designed their modular JACKAL drone with the support of the RAF.

Veteran’s Roundtable

The Defence Secretary joined myself and two local veterans, Mike and Richard for a roundtable discussion on how we can improve access to support for veterans, both in terms of their employment prospects and mental health provision. The discussion covered a number of topics including the lack of educational opportunities for members of the Army who are often put through level 2 training opportunities that aren’t recognised outside of the forces. Or the poor housing options for serving personnel and their families. As well as that feeling of shattered brotherhood/family when someone makes the decision to leave the military. It is so often an institution that so many of us get used to, as well as a fellowship many veterans find it difficult to live without.

As a follow up to that conversation, I have contacted the Defence Secretary around advancing opportunities for service personnel in their last year of service to work alongside the reserves, meeting people who’ve been in their shoes and are able to offer post-service for both their future career prospects and their personal wellbeing.

Constituency Update

Owen’s World Anti-knife crime summit

Since being a councillor i’ve been working alongside Owen’s world and a number of other local charities on organisations, on the need to reduce knife crime on our streets. I set up the Moredon neighbourhood watch and have worked with Owen’s world and local Parish Council’s to install bleed kits in the Constituency.

The event brought together a number of charities and community groups as well as frontline services from Change Lives Say No To Knives, BEST, Street Doctors, and the South West Ambulance Service. We all agreed that a community approach is needed to tackle this problem and I was really pleased to see the Police and Crime Commissioner support the initiative and emphasise the importance of the event for creating sustained, multi-agency action.

At the event we heard from Martin Cosser who founded the charity Charlie’s promise, a group focussed on ending knife crime throughout our society. Charlie was killed by a knife at a house party, showcasing not just the dangers of knives on our streets but also in our homes. He highlighted just how important sharing the aftermath of a knife incident is not just for the victim and perpetrator but the many ripples a single incident has on society. I’m committed with working alongside partners to reduce knife incidents in our community and make it safer.

The Space Agency & Harwell Science and Innovation Campus

I recently joined Angus Horner, former Director of the campus, on a visit to the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxford to see some of their world leading research and technology facilities and take part in a roundtable alongside a number of experts in the fields of Engineering, Lasers, R&D as well as members of the UK Space Agency - the HQ of which sits within in Swindon North.

The work being done in Harwell is vast and focussed on pioneering research to build all of us a better tomorrow, from space exploration to the discovery of life saving vaccines with companies like Moderna setting up on site, the sheer scale of research and innovation being undertaken on the campus is incredible.

Seeing Harwell not only inspires me for what the Panattoni site in Swindon could become it also inspires me to go further in delivering a Drone Cluster for Swindon, a place where experts can gather, share expertise and advance the next generation of technology, so that we can have more companies like FLYBY flying life saving medicines to remote areas or scouting in hard to reach areas so we can find lost people easier, drones have so many uses that can make our society better.

Community Champion Certificates

Over the summer I asked for nominations of people who make a real difference to their community, bringing positive change to those around them and have really enjoyed celebrating some of those achievements over the last month.

Clare Bridge - Clare was nominated because she cares deeply about about the outcomes of the children she teaches, many of whom come from deprived backgrounds and have learning issues. The person who nominated her noted she “is usually the first member of staff in school and the last out.” and as the KS 1 Literacy Lead she has overseen the introduction of the Read Write Ink phonics programme, across the whole school, training staff, continuously improving and managing its delivery in a way which has notably raised Literacy standards within the school.

Mike Harrison - Mike was nominated primarily because of his role as a Forest Schools Instructor. Through his work at Green Trees Forest school Mike has been supporting young people to re-discover a love of learning, outside of the traditional classroom and embedding them in the natural world. He’s also joined the work of anti-knife crime charities to teach young people what a knife is truly for and how to respect them as tools for bushcraft rather than treat them as weapons.

Food & Rural Affairs - Emma Reynolds

I attended a visit alongside the DEFRA secretary and organised by the National Trust to experience some of the work they’re doing at the very north-east of the Swindon North constituency around farming diversification, nature restoration and flood defences. The National trust toured us around tow of their key project areas, Cuckoo Pen Plantation and Fresden Field.

At the Cuckoo Pen Plantation the National Trust showcased the entire landscape of the Buscot and Coleshill Estate, introducing the high volume of woodland and habitat preservation projects, whilst also noting how the government’s investments in Environmental Land Management Schemes which is due to increase by 150% from £800m in 2023/24 to £2 billion by 2028/29 have assisted local farm tenants in expanding their farming operations and putting them on a more sustainable footing.

At Fresden Field I discussed with the Secretary of State discussed the importance of flood defences for the farming community and the work the National Trust are conducting to develop more flood reservoirs, which delay the speed water through wetlands, preventing flooding, and promoting reforestation. I also have followed up with the Secretary of State on a digitisation plan that would put the various schemes available to farmers in one place. For too long farmers who’ve been entitled to funding have been left unaware of that funding or unsure how to bid given the complexity and variety of available schemes. I want to simplify funding options and make sure British Farmers gets the support they need.

Casework Update

This month we created over 700 cases. Of these 589 of these were Campaign & Policy cases whilst the extra 111 cases related to individual circumstances. During this month we closed 142 personal cases and are still working to support residents as their own cases progress.

Case Highlights

1. A local business that employs over 150 people in Swindon reached out to me regarding an issue with HMRC that they’d been having for the past 7 months in which HMRC owed them a large sum of money, without which they’d have been unable to continue to operate effectively due to the strain HMRC had placed on their cash flow. After my intervention HMRC resolved the issue, immediately giving the company £207,000.

2. A resident who’s HGV license had been revoked after a stroke for a period of 12 months struggled to get in contact with the DVLA to request the return of their license after this 12-month period had expired. My team contacted the DVLA and thanks to a clear medical their license was returned to them and they returned to full time work.

Introduction - This month’s newsletter will focus on the work i’ve been involved in during the Parliamentary Recess. Whilst I'm not in Parliament, it’s a great opportunity to spend more time in the constituency, running surgeries and engaging with local businesses and activities.

Swindon’s Drone Cluster

During the recess i’ve continued to work on my key objective of securing greater employment and opportunities in the Drone industry.

Munin Dynamics

I visited Munin Dynamics in Swindon. Another drone company seeing the potential I’ve envisioned for Swindon as a Drone hub. I met with their founder Magnus Freyer, an impressive person, former Parachuter in the Norwegian Special Forces with a Masters in Mechatronics from Stamford University. He’s developed an innovative personal anti-drone technology for use on the frontline. It’s an innovative solution to keep individual soldiers safe on a battlefield full of emerging drone technology. Magnus’ passion for building this technology comes from the invasion of Ukraine, he initially hitchhiked into the country and saw firsthand the challenges they’re facing.

Whilst Munin is currently a small company, I know their aim is to grow and deliver for the future of NATO, keeping soldiers safe on the battlefield. I’ll be interested to see how Munin grow and adapt their products moving forward. On a side note, I also learned Magnus had developed an interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and unbeknownst to me had been visiting my old gym, 10th Plane Jiu-Jitsu. We agreed to do a training session together and I had a great time re-visiting my old gym.

Constituency Update

Community Activities & Surgeries

Hindu Temple

During the recess I visited the Hindu Temple in Swindon to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, a ceremony honouring the important bonds between family, both blood and non blood related, and especially brothers and sisters. With Raksha meaning 'protection' and Bandha meaning 'to tie'. I’m really thankful to the temple for including me and inviting me to be a part of such an important ceremony.

Penhill Surgery & office surgeries

My team and I recently ran a surgery at John Moulton Hall in Penhill to support residents. The Penhill Cafe is open every Tuesday from 13:00 - 16:00 and offers a range of support from housing advice to meeting local Police officers and is a fantastic community initiative. Over the course of my time at the cafe we took on 9 new cases, which my team and I are now working hard to sort. These cases covered a range of area from housing, universal credit and benefits and local utilities. I’m really pleased that my team and I can be there for people.

It was also great to chat to the Chronic Pain Awareness Group. This group meet in the Deers Leap function hall every Friday from 10-12pm and hold a mental health drop in on the first Tuesday of every month from 11am-1pm. They also have an online group. Seetec

I had the opportunity to visit Seetec and see first-hand the fantastic work being done to support local residents into, and back into, employment. The majority of the people they meet face challenges or barriers that make finding work more difficult, and it was inspiring to hear how tailored support is making a real difference. Through programmes like RESTART and the Work and Health Programme (WHP), they are helping people build confidence, develop skills, and move closer to sustainable employment. A huge thank you to the Seetec team for taking the time to show me around.

VJ Day

on the 15th August, I was honoured to have been invited to Downing Street for the VJ Day commemorations and meet some of the veterans who fought in the Pacific theatre. Whilst to many much of the Second World War took place in North Africa and Europe, it’s important that we remember the soldiers who fought in the Pacific and Indian theatres of war. Soldiers from across the UK, the Commonwealth, the Republic of China, Free France, the Soviet Union and the US all fought in the Pacific and Indian theatres of war after Japan launched their surprise attack on Pearl Harbour on the 7th December 1941. The reception honoured the veterans who fought in the Pacific as well as honouring the over 4 million allied soldiers who fell in the line of duty between 1937-1945 in the Pacific, approximately 100,579 of which were from the UK and wider commonwealth. The event reminded all of us of the strength and awe-inspiring bravery of the greatest generation.

Case Highlights

1. This month my team supported a resident working through their housing options with the Council. The resident’s application to bid on two-bed properties hadn’t been able to bid for approximately 7 months due to asbestos and other issues present in her current property, and she’d been growing increasingly concerned it would never be resolved. Thanks to the intervention of my team the resident’s asbestos issue was managed by the Council and they allowed the resident to begin bidding on two-bedroom properties.

2. A separate resident had also been charged over £600 by Thames Water due to a leak below the path beside their property, they were concerned not only with the increased cost to themselves but also the water waste of the leak itself. Throughout this leak period the resident had attempted to get Thames Water to come out and fix the leak but the company had failed to do so. Due to my teams intervention Thames Water apologised and sent someone to fix the leak whilst also deducting the entire charge from the resident, as well as providing credit to the account that would’ve covered their water costs throughout the leak period.

Introduction - This month’s newsletter marks one year since Labour’s election victory on the 4th July 2024 and my first year in office. Because of this, I wanted this newsletter to be centred on the key achievements of that first year, both here in the constituency and in Westminster. We’ll be taking a break from the usual structure to focus on the past year.

Yearly Constituency Update

Jobs & Defence Drone Cluster

Since the election I knew that my role as MP for Swindon North needed to be one not only centred on scrutinising government legislation or voting for massive reforms like the Workers Rights and Renters Rights Bill’s, but one focussed on Swindon. Our town has a proud history of adapting and developing to the technologies and innovations of the time, whether that be in Agriculture, building the railways or supporting the explosion of individual freedoms brought by the car. Our innovative past I’ve spent this past year working towards Swindon’s next industrial leap.

In our uncertain world it is right that this government are increasing defence spending to 2.5% by 2027. In line with this, I’ve been building what I hope and will become a Drone Cluster in our town. Drones bring multiple opportunities, whether in our nations defence or in civilian industry, and most importantly high skilled manufacturing jobs.

Due to my consistent engagement and support for the industry having had over 30 meetings with defence business and stakeholders from across the world we are now seeing my vison of a Drone cluster coming to life. I firmly believe that Swindon could become the drone manufacturing hub for the U.K

I was really pleased to see the first company of the Drone Cluster announce their plans to set up in Swindon North. STARK Defence announced over 100 high skilled jobs for Swindon and a 40000 square foot factory. The move was announced as part of the UK-German Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation Treaty, an agreement to deliver on a range of issues from Climate Change to supporting Ukraine.

STARK Defence have begun advertising the first of their roles for their new factory and I look forward to being able to share more in future installations about other companies and producers of Drone’s for the cluster as it shapes into something that the people of Swindon can tangibly feel, offering jobs and opportunities for the people of our town.

Community Activities & Surgeries

Throughout my time serving as your MP I’ve engaged in a number of community events and run multiple surgeries throughout the year to listen to your concerns and sort what issues I can.

Swindon Carers Centre

One of my first actions as the MP for Swindon North was to mediate between the Swindon carer’s centre and Swindon Borough Council. Unfortunately, as often happens in life dialogue between either side broke down and this led to the potential of the Swindon Carers Centre closing by the end of 2024, which caused a large level of distress to a number of constituents and residents of Swindon. Because of this I met with the Swindon Carer’s centre and the Council to discuss how we could re-open negotiations and ensure that those residents who relied on the Carer’s service would be supported regardless of if the Carer’s Centre stayed open or not. After some negotiations I was really pleased that both the Council and the Carer’s Centre were able to come to an agreement which extended the centre’s contract by a 12-month period, so that residents had time to explore the Local Authority contract for carer support services in Swindon which has now been awarded to the CRCC (Cornwall Rural Community Charity) who have 30 years’ experience of supporting carers. Although it will be sad to see the Swindon Carer’s Centre wind down, i’d like to express my heartfelt thanks for the incredible work they’ve undertaken over the last 28 years.

Gorse Hill Community Fridge

One of my personal highlights was running a community surgery at the Gorse Hill Community Fridge. Although we took on some tough cases from the residents attending the Fridge, it was amazing to be around the volunteers of the Fridge and see the wonderful work they do, not only supporting those who need food essentials but the social value of the adjoining Cafe. So many constituents were attending just for a chat, or to speak to their friends. The visit really focussed my mind on the importance of these community spaces in delivering a holistic space for people and the way they deliver much more than someone walking past might first assume. My special thanks go to Heather Prictor, who manages the Fridge for her excellent leadership of the organisation as well as her genuine kindness and care for the community.

VE Day

On the 8th May I spent the day attending numerous events throughout Swindon to commemorate the sacrifices of service personnel and civilians in the Second World War. I first visited Highworth to attend their celebrations and spoke to the Town Council’s Mayor about the commemorations and also spoke to some residents. After this visit, I attended the main ceremony at Swindon Borough Council, where the Mayor and Cllr Leader Jim Robbins spoke about the importance of remembering those who fought for our freedoms. The celebrations were supported by the Beavers and they put on an excellent buffet. That evening I attended and spoke at St Margarets Church. Overall the day was filled with celebration and remembrance. We must never forget the sacrifices of those that served in the Second World War, or what it meant.

Investments secured for Swindon

Over the last year I’ve been working flat out to secure investment in Swindon, not only from the Private Sector but also through government and am proud that over this last year we’ve secured over £20m of individual direct investment into our town. This doesn’t take into account the extra funds Swindon Borough Council have received from central government, nor the regional bonuses we’re a part of, for example the extra GP’s funded across the BANES ICB, or other pot funds.

However, we have secured investments in:

• NHS and Community Projects - £11.9m

• Swindon stop smoking services - £241,361

• Prospect Hospice funding - £508,090

• Health Total - £12,649,451

Education

• Increase to College Funding - £1,837,956

• SEND funding for 60 new placements - £3.4m

• 2 initial Free Breakfast Clubs in Swindon North - £88,000

• Education Total - £5,325,956

Transport

• For Potholes in Swindon - £1.5m

• Rail station expansion -100k for Swindon North Entrance to station

• Swindon Bus services - £2,894,900

• Transport Total - £4,494,900

Total - £22,470,307

Penhill Trailblazer Scheme

The government announced that Penhill would receive up to £20m, one of only 25 places in the country to receive this trailblazer funding. I couldn’t be more pleased that time spent lobbying the government to support forgotten communities has paid off. Whilst the government has announced the funding, I am dedicated to ensuring it is spent on the necessities of the community, rather than it being dictated by the Government, Council or myself. Therefore, we’ll be undergoing an intensive community engagement programme that reviews the projects and options that the community of Penhill feel will best benefit and support them.

There’s still so much more to do for Swindon and i’ll continue to lobby for government to make further investments in our town but am pleased with the progress we’re making so far and the way a Labour Government is delivering for areas others might leave behind.

Key Labour Achievements

Budget & Spending Review

In the budget, the Chancellor laid out a number of measures that would raise funds and allow us to start to repair the broken systems we inherited, this wasn’t easy but I was pleased that the Chancellor took the necessary steps to rebuild our public services, increase the minimum wage to £12.21 and provide emergency funding to repair broken schools and invest in our NHS. Because of these decisions the Chancellor was able to set out a £69.5bn increase to yearly funding from 2025/26 and she set out how this would be spent in the Spending review.

The Spending Review marked a break from Austerity. The Labour Government chose to invest in our country because we know that that to live in a positive and green future, we must build it. To do that we have to invest in our communities, the health and education of those that live there and the major infrastructure that allows for us all to interact with one another. That’s why I’m particularly proud the Chancellor announced funding in each of these core areas: Health, Security, and Communities and Housing.

During the election I spoke to thousands of people who told me time and again that their primary concern was the NHS. That’s why in the Chancellor’s first budget she announced an initial investment of £22bn and over these past 12 months we’ve seen that initial investment as well as Labour leadership begin to deliver, with 3 million extra appointments, over 2,000 GPs hired and waiting lists reducing daily. However, there is still much more to do and that’s why the Chancellor has announced a consistent 3% rise per year for the NHS budget, worth an extra £29bn per year. This investment will help us deliver more appointments, bring waiting lists down further and transform care away from hospitals toward the community.

Keeping us safe from illness, disease and aiding us in recovery may be one element of government but another is to protect people from several competing threats which is why we’ve made major investments in British Security. Defence spending is due to rise to 2.6% in 2027 which allows us to invest in British manufacturing and hard power to deter threats and protect ourselves and our allies. A boost of £30bn for Nuclear Power, alongside Great British Energy to improve domestic power production and protect against shocks to the energy market. Security has moved beyond armies, fleets and airpower and we’re ensuring our energy marker is insulated from international shocks like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which spiked energy prices across the UK. I know this forced many businesses and individuals into difficult budgetary decisions and am glad the government is investing further in our Energy Security. Moreover, we’re investing over £15bn in Infrastructure projects and will use British Steel to do so, bolstering economic growth and a key national industry. This first year of a Labour government has laid the groundwork for a British industrial recovery and i’m pleased Business confidence is now the highest it’s been in almost a decade.

To be healthy and safe, we also need to be able to live in warm and well-built homes. The government have announced the largest investment in our Housing stock in 50 years. These measures include £39bn of investment in Affordable homes so we can get people the homes they deserve, a £10bn expansion of Homes England to invest in new social housing stock and an expanded Warm Homes scheme, to upgrade existing housing and make them fit for the future. Combined, these measures will allow the government to deliver the homes people across the country desperately need. Indeed, the government have drawn attention to the Heart of Swindon plan, designed to reinvigorate Swindon’s town centre and provide accompanying accommodation. Showcasing the vision Labour in power locally and nationally can deliver together.

The Chancellor’s first year in office has closed the door on the low investment that led to the insecurity we’ve all felt this past decade and set out how we will build a prosperous future for our country. The Labour Government are the government that will deliver security for the British people, Security of Health, Security of Defence, Security of Energy, and Security of Home.

Legislation

Renters Reform - For too many people renting a home has been to insecure and prone to abuse. Whilst there are so many good landlords across the country, the government is committed to providing security for those renting a home and those who rent them out. The reforms are focussed on:

• Removing Section 21 – No fault evictions and ensure Section 8 evictions must be heard by a judge

• Allowing tenants to challenge substantial rent increases which will be assessed by a tribunal to ensure fairness

• Ensuring pets cannot reasonably refused by landlords so owning a pet is not a barrier to a good home

• Ensuring the most vulnerable are not placed in a bidding war by ensuring all rents are advertised openly and landlords will be unable to accept an offer that exceeds this specified rent

Alongside these there are measures that will support renters in launching requests for maintenance and making complaints against their landlord through a private rented sector Ombudsman.

Workers Rights - As well as implementing Renter Reform, the government are supporting the biggest upgrade to workers rights in decades including:

• Providing flexibility, for workers and businesses alike, is key to answering this challenge and is at the heart of the legislation to upgrade the law to ensure it is fit for modern life and a modern economy.

• Removing the existing two-year qualifying period for protections from unfair dismissal delivering on our manifesto commitment to ensure that all workers have a right to these protections from day one on the job.

• Consult on a new statutory probation period for companies’ new hires. This will allow for a proper assessment of an employee’s suitability to a role as well as reassuring employees that they have rights from day one.

• End exploitative Zero-hours contracts

• End fire and rehire practices

• Establish day one paternity, parental and bereavement leave

• Strengthen Statutory Sick pay and remove the lower earnings limit.

The new legislation will make working more compatible with people’s lives supporting flexible working and require large employers to create action plans on addressing gender pay gaps. The aim is to support employees through the menopause, and ensure protections against dismissal are strengthened for pregnant women and new mothers. These rights will be enforced by a new Fair Work Agency bringing together existing enforcement bodies will also be established to enforce rights such as holiday pay and support employers looking for guidance on how to comply with the law.

Great British Energy - As part of the Government’s mission to reach clean power by 2030 we ended the ban on Onshore Wind Farms within 72 Hours of entering government and established a new, publicly owned, clean energy company headquartered in Aberdeen with £8.3bn of investment. Its primary objective is to facilitate, encourage and participate in:

• The production, distribution, storage, and supply of clean energy

• The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from energy produced from fossil fuels

• Improvements in energy efficiency

• Measures for ensuring the security of the supply of energy

Beyond this we are investing over £20bn in British Nuclear energy to ensure we don’t encounter the same errors as in the Coalition Government of 2010-2015, where Nuclear projects were abandoned, that would’ve supported keeping prices low during and in the aftermath of the Pandemic and the price shock of the War in Ukraine. It’s so important that we invest in Green energy production to insulate ourselves from future price shocks and also meet our Climate Change targets.

Saving British Steel

On the 12th April, the government set out to save British Steel from closure and through emergency legislation took control of the site. I was incredibly proud to be a part of a government that understands just how important it is to protect jobs and preserve our key national industries. The legislation passed Parliament and received sign off by the king in just over 6 hours and highlights how seriously this government takes the UK’s industrial heritage and future. I’m also pleased that now we’ve saved British Steel, we’re going to keep it going by utilising British Steel in future major infrastructure projects.

Water (Special Measures) Act 2025

Throughout the Campaign last summer and ever since, the ridiculous state of our waterways and the industry that’s run it for the past 40 years has been increasingly obvious. Since 2019 water bosses had been paid £25m in bonuses. This scandal had to end. That’s why this government has brought forward the Water (Special Measures) Act which:

• Blocks bonuses for executives who pollute our waterways

• Brings criminal charges against persistent law breakers

• Enables automatic and severe penalties for wrongdoing

• Ensures monitoring of every sewage outlet

OFWAT have already fined Thames Water the largest fine in OFWAT’s history, totalling £122.7m for breaching rules over sewage leaks as well as bonuses and shareholder dividends. Ofwat said the penalties "will be paid by the company and its investors, and not by customers".

Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill

The government are addressing concerns around immigration and especially the irregular migration of the small boat crossings by bringing forward legislation to address the concerns raised. The Prime Minister noted we’ve deported over 35,000 people who shouldn’t be in the UK and have agreed new deals with the French, German and Dutch governments to ensure that those who smuggle individuals to the UK are arrested and prosecuted. More widely the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill will:

• Through the provision of new powers and data-sharing arrangements, enable law enforcement agencies to investigate, detect and disrupt organised immigration crime and serious and organised crime, in turn deterring irregular migration to the UK and reducing small boat crossings and loss of life in the Channel

• Establish the framework for the Border Security Command to provide systems leadership for border security to respond to current and future threats

• Strengthen the UK’s wider immigration and asylum system, including protecting it against abuse, in turn rebuilding public confidence in the UK migration and borders system

Trade Agreements

UK-US Trade Arrangement -Thousands of jobs have been saved in key industries as the Prime Minister secured a first-of-a-kind trade agreement with the US. - Car export tariffs will reduce from 27.5% to 10% - saving hundreds of millions a year for Jaguar Land Rover alone. This will apply to a quota of 100,000 UK cars, almost the total the UK exported last year.

The UK steel industry – which was on the brink of collapse just weeks ago – will now have access to a zero-tariff quota thanks to today’s deal. - In a win for both nations, we have agreed new reciprocal market access on beef – with UK farmers now benefiting from a tariff free quota for 13,000 metric tonnes. There will be no weakening of UK food standards on imports and was noted by President Trump that the UK would not be expected to take hormone treated beef.

UK-India FTA - The government agreed the Indian Free Trade Agreement which will add £4.8 billion to the UK economy and £2.2 billion in wages every year. The UK estimates an immediate reduction of £400 million in import duties and we expect our annual exports to grow by an additional £15.7 billion (59% higher than historical trend growth) by 2040 whilst Indian exports are expected to be boosted by £9.8 billion (25%), removing India’s current trade surplus with the UK.

UK-EU Negotiations - At the first talks with the EU since 2020 the Government announced a raft of changes that improve the UK’s position both in trade and security when dealing with the EU. This deal is an improvement on the Conservative’s deal in all aspects. The new deal means:

• UK goods travelling to the EU will no longer face extra checks and paperwork. Raw burgers and sausages will no longer be banned and the 34% decline in UK food exports to the EU can start to be reversed. Fish exports expected to be boosted by this, as 70% of all UK fish is exported to the EU and will face reduced checks

• A new £360m "fishing and coastal growth fund" will invest in new technology and equipment whilst the EU fishing vessels in UK waters will provide 25% of their catch to UK fishing fleets.

• British holidaymakers will be able to use more eGates in Europe, ending the dreaded queues at border control. Clarifying that EU countries can offer eGates to UK nationals once a new Entry/Exit System (EES) comes into effect in October this year.

• UK Defence companies given access to £126bn of EU funds for rebooting the Defence Industry, which currently employs 164,000 people in the UK.

• Begun discussions on a Youth Experience scheme to allow a strict number of 18-30 year olds to travel and work throughout European member states.

The Government is moving ahead with these international deals to boost our economy and place the UK once again at the heart of the world economy.

50 Contributions in Parliament – Standing Up for Swindon North

This year, I have made 50 contributions in Parliament. From my maiden speech to debates on local and national issues, I have worked tirelessly to represent Swindon North.

It was a very proud moment for me to deliver my maiden speech where I spoke about my pride in being the first-ever MP for Swindon North to be born in the town. I shared my vision for Swindon’s future, one built on new technologies, and high-skilled, well-paid jobs, while recognising the challenges we face: rising antisocial behaviour, raw sewage in our streams, and unfair fleecehold charges on residents. Above all, I paid tribute to the people of Swindon: resilient, diverse, and united against hatred and division. I promised then, as I do now, that I will not let them down.

Throughout the year, I have spoken up on issues that matter to our community and the country, including:

• Justice for Victims of Domestic Abuse – I challenged the Government on the unacceptable delays in charging domestic abuse cases and the dramatic fall in prosecutions over the last eight years.

• The Infected Blood Scandal – I shared the heartbreaking story of Jean Anziani, a nurse from my constituency who tragically died from hepatitis B contracted at work, yet whose family has been excluded from current compensation schemes. I continue to press the Government for justice for families like hers.

• Humanitarian Aid for Gaza – I pushed the Government on their steps are being taken to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, reflecting the concerns of many residents.

• Harry Parker - I put forward a 10 minute rule bill as well as 2 amendments to the police and crime bill and now I am directly feeding into the road safety strategy and was pleased to see the minister respond to the thoughts i’ve brought to the strategy and will continue to lobby for change.

• Improving Transport Links – I highlighted the need for a proposed Swindon-Oxford railway line, a project that could boost local connectivity and opportunities.

• Fighting Fleecehold Charges – I called for reforms to stop residents in Priory Vale and St Andrews being forced to pay astronomical fees without receiving fair services.

• Holding Thames Water to Account – I exposed failures on pollution, flooding, poor customer service, and unjustifiable price hikes. Thames Water must stop failing our communities while paying out huge dividends and executive bonuses.

I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far, but this is only the beginning. My mission remains clear: to fight for a fairer, greener, safer, and more prosperous Swindon North, and to hold this Government—and any corporation that exploits our residents—to the highest standards of accountability.

The government have taken a lot of initial steps to improve the state of the country, however there’s still much more work to do and I look forward to further legislation coming forward to address the concerns and aspirations of the British public.

Yearly Casework Update

Numbers of Cases Dealt with in the past year:

Over 7,000 cases created and over 11,000 emails sent in reply to constituents and written over 300 letters to Ministers or departments relating to specific policy issues raised.

Over this time my office and I have dealt with a number of cases that have heavily impacted residents lives. The ability to intervene and assist constituents is one of the greatest privileges of the work I do as a Member of Parliament. Because of this I’d like to point out a couple of the case studies that highlight the difference an active MP Office can make to local residents.

• A number of issues relating to Thames Water have crossed my constituency office since being elected, in one particular example a constituent was charged a bill of £11,496.76 for supposed usage of 6002 cubic metres (equivalent of 2 ½ Olympic sized pools). Thames Water refused to accept the constituent’s concerns and exhausted his appeals to them. After my intervention Thames Water sent leak engineers to the constituents property and they noted the previous engineers had read the meter wrong. The charge of £11k was cancelled and apology to resident was then sent.

• We also deal with a lot of housing issues, for example one resident who was unable to join the housing register due to the complicated nature of her eviction. Because of this she was facing homelessness and the loss of her dog. However, after the intervention of my office the Council placed her on the housing register and due to the severity of her needs agreed that she could occupy a bungalow and keep her pet.

Introduction - Due to the importance of attending the votes on the Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill, my time in the Constituency this month has been lower than in previous months but I felt it important to represent the countless voices who have contacted me about the Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill and vote for the Bill. I’ve still been engaging with groups and working to address the core objectives for my time in Office and look forward to greater time in the Constituency over the Summer.

• Improving Education in Swindon

• Support Mental Health Provision in our Town

• Expand Swindon’s Economy

• Support Justice in our Town

My aim is to cover these missions one at a time in more depth and today I’ll be focussing on Improving Education in our Town.

Constituency Update

Improve Education in our Town - As part of my missions for our town, I know education is key. There once was a time when it wouldn’t have been at the top of my personal list because my love of education came later in life, after the Army taught me the importance of learning both structured and unstructured. Therefore, whilst as an MP I am focussed on bringing investment to education in Swindon I also want to encourage everyone of any age to get involved in learning more about the topics that interest them.

I’m supporting Outdoor Education to tackle knife crime in our town. Crime and County Lines are some of the biggest causes for people’s individual education being knocked off track.

Since being elected, I’ve agreed over 100 Apprenticeships with local businesses to be delivered in the town and secured £1,837,956 for local Colleges as well as Two Free Breakfast Clubs for students at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Seven Fields Primary School.

Armed Forces Day - On Saturday, I and Heidi Alexander MP attended the armed forces day event in Lydiard Park. It was great to see so many families out enjoying the weather and the free event, there were a myriad of activities set up by local military personnel, from arts and crafts to a funfair and some local charities. I also got the chance to show that, even though my Personal Trainer days in the Rifles are long behind me, I haven’t fully lost my step and competed in a push up challenge, doing over 40 before my arms gave out. In my defence it was a hot day and i’ve grown accustomed to pushing through legislation rather than doing push ups.

Alongside the above the armed forces day put on:

• Military vehicles and armour on show

• A parade from local cadets

• A concert from local school children and dance groups

• Commemorative tree planting to mark 80 years

All in all, it was a great day, followed by a great visit to the Kenyan community day.

Stratton Advice Point 40 Year Anniversary - I was really pleased to attend the 40th anniversary of the Stratton Advice Point at the start of the month. The team at the Advice Point are all volunteers whose mission is to support residents of Stratton with free confidential advice around benefit checks and information, help with completing benefit claim forms, help with appeals when a claim is unsuccessful, cost of Living information and providing general advice. It’s the people that volunteer their time at the Advice Point that make our society a little better and I hope the work of the Stratton Advice Point continues long into the future.

Last month I asked for pictures that best summarised Spring in Swindon. Thank you to all those who took part in the competition and especially to Janine, our winner, for a picture of her and her brother taken moments before they tackle the high ropes of Lydiard Park! It’s great to see people getting out into nature and enjoying the lovely weather.

Parliamentary Business

Spending Review - The Chancellor announced her Spending Review which covers the major areas of spending over the next 10 years. This review marked a break from Austerity. The Labour Government are investing in our country because we know that that to live in a positive and green future, we must build it. To do that we have to invest in our communities, the health and education of those that live there and the major infrastructure that allows for us all to interact with one another. That’s why I’m particularly proud the Chancellor announced funding in each of these core areas: Health, Security, and Communities and Housing.

During the election I spoke to thousands of people who told me time and again that their primary concern was the NHS. They value the incredible contribution members of staff make daily but knew deep down, despite that incredible hard work, services were getting worse across the country. That’s why last Autumn the Chancellor announced an initial investment of £22bn and over the past few months we’ve seen that initial investment and Labour leadership begin to deliver, with 3 million extra appointments, over 1,000 GPs hired and waiting lists reduced by over 200,000. However, there is still much more to do and that’s why the Chancellor has announced a consistent 3% rise per year for the NHS budget, worth an extra £29bn per year. This investment will help us deliver more appointments, bring waiting lists down further and transform care away from hospitals toward the community.

Keeping us safe from illness, disease and aiding us in recovery may be one element of government but another is to protect people from several competing threats which is why we’ve made major investments in British Security. Defence spending is due to rise to 2.6% in 2027 which allows us to invest in British manufacturing and hard power to deter threats and protect ourselves and our allies. A boost of £30bn for Nuclear Power, alongside Great British Energy to improve domestic power production and protect against shocks to the energy market. Security has moved beyond armies, fleets and airpower and we’re ensuring our energy marker is insulated from international shocks like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which spiked energy prices across the UK. I know this forced many businesses and individuals into difficult budgetary decisions and am glad the government is investing further in our Energy Security. Moreover, we’re investing over £15bn in Infrastructure projects and will use British Steel to do so, bolstering economic growth and a key national industry.

To be healthy and safe, we also need to be able to live in warm and well-built homes. The government have announced the largest investment in our Housing stock in 50 years. These measures include £39bn of investment in Affordable homes so we can get people the homes they deserve, a £10bn expansion of Homes England to invest in new social housing stock and an expanded Warm Homes scheme, to upgrade existing housing and make them fit for the future. Combined, these measures will allow the government to deliver the homes people across the country desperately need. Indeed, the Chancellor drew attention to the Heart of Swindon plan, designed to reinvigorate Swindon’s town centre and provide accompanying accommodation. I am incredibly proud that the Chancellor revealed a new £20m scheme to reinvest in existing communities, a key trailblazer of which is Penhill. The investments will support improvements that people in Penhill can feel and I’m excited to see this develop in the coming months.

The Chancellor closed the door on the low investment that led to the insecurity we’ve all felt this past decade and set out how we will build a prosperous future for our country. The Labour government are the government that will deliver security for the British people, Security of Health, Security of Defence, Security of Energy, and Security of Home.

Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill - On Friday the 20^th June, the Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill passed its Third Reading in Parliament by a majority of 23. I wanted to lay out why I voted in favour of this Bill.

I want everyone to be able to live a life full of the joys and trials each of us face. I have worked with Prospect Hospice to support them in providing excellent care for those in their final moments and will continue to lobby for a stronger hospice system so that everyone is supported with a death befitting their wishes. However, it is also my belief that someone who is over 18 and in complete control of their faculties should be, in the direst circumstances, entitled to choose when to end their life. I believe this should only be in the case of a terminal illness and have supported the 6-month timeline as proposed in the Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill. This is not a decision I have taken lightly but is one I have come to after engaging with Religious Leaders, those who are currently living in insufferable pain and those from the disabled community. I also conducted a survey to gather input from my constituents and carefully considered their views, both for and against.

I have voted in favour of amendments of more robust safeguarding that:

• Limits doctors from raising assisted dying as an option, to ensure the choice remains entirely with the patient and to keep the focus on doctors as healers.

• Allows medical professionals to opt out of participating, so no one is forced to act against their morals or religious beliefs.

• Prevents advertising for assisted dying, except in official medical guidance.

I recognise alongside this decision the need to increase the quality and availability of palliative care and so I have worked to secure increased funding, including an extra £127k for Prospect Hospice. In Palliative care there are times where it is necessary to make a patient comfortable and in doing so this may prematurely end their life, or at least their conscious state. I do not begrudge this and believe it would be wrong to make someone suffer unnecessarily. However, in these instances it is often not the patient who makes this choice, but rather their family or healthcare professionals.

I believe this legislation offers the one thing we all want in life, choice. Choice over our lives and in the direst situations our deaths. I support the idea that people should be able to be comfortable toward the end of their lives and yet believe that it should also be a person’s choice to be conscious and surrounded by loved ones at a time of their choosing rather than deteriorating and having decisions made for them, if they are aware that their condition will be degenerative across a 6-month period.

I fully respect the choice of the individual and believe the Bill in question provides people with a choice over the end of their lives in unimaginable circumstances. Yet it does so with safeguards to make coercion to take one’s life an offence where one does not currently exist and provide further support for vulnerable people in the final months of their lives.

Thank you to everyone who contacted me about the Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill, I have valued the opinion of each and every one of you who spoke, wrote or commented on a post and although I may have made a decision contrary to your view am truly grateful to have listened to all perspectives in this difficult choice. I am satisfied that I have voted in accordance with my conscience and the people of Swindon North.

Westminster Hall -

Outdoor Education - I spoke in a debate about the importance of Outdoor Education an it’s ability to support students wider learning. I also paid particular thanks to Mike Harrison and his business Green Trees Forest Schools, for his work in tackling knife crime in Swindon. Once young people understand not just the dangers of knives but their true use as a tool, the less likely they are to engage in violence on our streets.

GPs in the South West - I paid tribute to the work of GP’s and the governments ambitious plan to build 1.5m new homes by the end of the Parliament. However, whilst I applaud and recognise the need to build, I also know that here in Swindon we know the importance of building not just homes but communities. Therefore, I set out the need to focus on the wider whole when it comes to housebuilding and not just the homes themselves.

Leasehold & Fleecehold reform - I raised the issue of unfair charges faced by residents in Priory Vale and St Andrews, many of whom are paying extortionate fees without receiving proper services or receiving service charge bills without an itemised breakdown. This Labour Government is absolutely right to implement the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024. I remain committed to giving leaseholders more rights, power, and protection over their homes.

Road Traffic Update - In the Chamber, I raised a question to the Attorney General about meeting me to discuss prosecutions under Section 3ZB of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

This part of the law deals with cases where a driver causes death while unlicensed, uninsured, or disqualified. It was brought to my attention by road safety campaigners who reached out during my work on the Harry Parker Bill. I was able to raise this directly with the Attorney General in Parliament.

The Attorney General offered her condolences to Harry’s family and stated that every life lost on our roads is one too many, and improving road safety remains a top priority for this Government. She is also happy to meet with me to discuss this further and I look forward to meeting with her in the near future.

In addition I submitted two amendments to the Police and Crime Bill. New clause 15 on unlicensed drivers would amend Section 87 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 to introduce tougher penalties for individuals who have never held a driving licence.

And new clause 16 on the offence of failure to stop would amend Section 170 of the Act to allow courts to impose:

• An unlimited fine,

• A custodial sentence.

• Disqualification from driving for up to two years,

And importantly, allow the courts to impose any combination of those penalties.

Whilst these amendments were not chosen for debate, I remain hopeful that they will be adopted into the road safety strategy.

Casework Update

Numbers of Cases Dealt with in the past month:

In the past month over 900 emails or letters have been sent in reply to Constituents, just over 700 of which are in response to Policy or Campaign questions or requests and just over 350 relate to individual issues.

Over 100 cases relating to personal issues have been raised with me this June and i’m pleased that my team have bee able address these, sorting a number of issues for constituents, from housing to issues with Thames Water or the local council, my caseworkers have been supporting the residents of Swindon North. We’ve also received over 800 questions from members of the public this month related to policy or campaign issues.

Introduction - This month’s newsletter will be slightly tighter focussed than last months as it’ll be entirely centred on the work i’ve been involved in this May. This month has been busy in both Parliament and the Constituency, with major legislation like the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill coming to Parliament for debates on amendments as well as the Prime Minister agreeing numerous trade deals with our partners across the globe. Here in Swindon North, I’ve been engaging on my missions for this Parliamentary term which are to:

• Improve Education in Swindon

• Support Mental Health Provision in our Town

• Expand Swindon’s Economy

• Support Justice in our Town

My aim is to cover these missions one at a time in more depth and today I’ll be focussing on Expanding Swindon’s Economy.

Constituency Update

Expanding Swindon’s Economy - Over the past few months, I’ve been working on my central goal whilst in position as MP for Swindon North, to grow the employment and education prospects of our town. I’ve been working in Parliament and here in Swindon to provide more jobs for the people of Swindon and have been centring my efforts on the Panattoni site. My focus is on bringing three tiers of jobs to the site.

In a modern economy there are needs for warehouses and supply depots, which encompass Tier 1, indeed I met recently with SW Logistics, a company founded in Swindon and operating out of the Cheney Manor Industrial Estate who currently operate the logistics of a number of companies, large and small across the UK. They’re proof of the incredible potential we have in the Town and I want to make sure companies like SW are connected to our economic future as we bring new companies into the town.

Tier 2 is a focus on manufacturing skills and production jobs, and I’ve met with companies in the housebuilding and commercial sectors to bring these to the Panattoni site. Although nothing is concrete at this stage, I am pleased with the progress we’re making in this area.

Finally, there’s Tier 3 employment, these jobs I’m working alongside the Council and Panattoni to ensure they’re home to the next generation of jobs and skills. In my role as Business Champion for Net Zero and Defence, both of which tie into the UK’s security I’ve been engaging with several defence and green companies about providing employment for Swindon. These jobs would tie in well with one of our local existing businesses, SW Logistics, a leading logistics partner for green technology. Swindon has a history of high skilled labour and a proud industrial heritage, from the Railways to Car Manufacturing and I know we can transform ourselves again into a leading security hub.

Once all Tiers are delivered, I’d expect this to generate 7,000 jobs on-site, increasing to 11,000 once the wider supply chain is considered. I firmly believe Swindon’s best days are ahead.

Gorse Hill Community Fridge Surgery - On the 1st May I visited the Community Fridge in Gorse Hill and set up a surgery for anyone who wanted support or advice whilst I was there. My team and I took on a number of cases and were able to speak to and advise a number of residents on local issues ranging from parking to benefit concerns. It was great to be able to attend for the whole of the community fridge’s opening times from 11am - 2pm and be available to engage in various discussions and subjects throughout the day.

I was incredibly impressed with the work of the Community Fridge, not just because of the valuable work they offer in providing people with much needed food and support but the sense of community present in the cafe they run alongside the Fridge. I met a number of people who spoke to me about how the Fridge offered them connection, where they may otherwise have been left isolated.

I’d like to send a special thank you to Heather Prictor who runs the Community Fridge, for being so welcoming to me and my team and for the work she and her volunteers do for our community.

Green Business Roundtable - Alongside Sinewave I hosted a Green Business roundtable with a specific focus on transport. In attendance were Kerry McCarthy (Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero), RWE, Source EV, Arval UK, Swindon and Wiltshire Institute of Technology and Swindon Borough Council.

The Government relayed their plans to increase investment in Green Energy and noted that before the Ukraine War energy security wasn’t taken that seriously by prior governments as they relied on the Gas Market and the belief that this would always be able to supply reasonably priced energy to the UK. Unfortunately, the Coalition Government’s decisions to cancel Nuclear Power Plants proposed by Gordon Brown’s government as well as the Conservatives cut to Gas storage and onshore wind production has exposed the UK to higher prices for consumers and business.

To meet the Labour Governments goals and reduce domestic Bills, 4 key steps are needed:

1. Increase grid connectivity so green businesses and energy providers can feed into the national grid and utilise it efficiently.

2. Reform the planning process, to remove blockers and allow for necessary infrastructure as well as the larger Solar and Wind Farms as well as Nuclear or Hydro power projects.

3. Unify the currently fragmented approach to skills by investing in apprenticeships and encouraging young people / up skilling into the green energy sector.

4. Investment, we require both public and private investment to grow our green energy production and bring bills down.

I will be delivering my report to the Department of Business and Trade on how we can achieve this, here in Swindon and across the board in the coming weeks and look forward to engaging with the Government further on boosting Green Investment in the UK.

VE Day Commemorations - On the 8th May I spent the day attending numerous events throughout Swindon to commemorate the sacrifices of service personnel and civilians in the Second World War. I first visited Highworth to attend their celebrations and spoke to the Town Council’s Mayor about the commemorations and also spoke to some residents. After this visit, I attended the main ceremony at Swindon Borough Council, where the Mayor and Cllr Leader Jim Robbins spoke about the importance of remembering those who fought for our freedoms. The celebrations were supported by the Beavers and they put on an excellent buffet. That evening I attended and spoke at St Margarets Church. Overall the day was filled with celebration and remembrance. We must never forget the sacrifices of those that served in the Second World War, or what it meant.

Community Focus

Every month I’d like to point out some community assets in Swindon that support local people, these can be charities that are doing a great job or simply positive stories within the Constituency.

This month, I’ll highlight a couple of charities raised with me by Residents of Swindon North:

Stratton Advice Point 40th Anniversary - This community service is celebrating its 40th anniversary in June and offers free confidential welfare benefits advice/guidance in the Stratton area. They’re open 10.30-12.30 on Thursdays at Beechcroft Library SN2 7QQ.

The Harbour Project, One of the New Mayor’s chosen charities - The project aim to be a family for every individual who seeks asylum or is granted refugee status in Swindon, and to help them to rebuild their lives.

This will apply to a quota of 100,000 UK cars, almost the total the UK exported last year.

The UK steel industry – which was on the brink of collapse just weeks ago – will now have access to a zero-tariff quota thanks to today’s deal. - In a win for both nations, we have agreed new reciprocal market access on beef – with UK farmers now benefiting from a tariff free quota for 13,000 metric tonnes. There will be no weakening of UK food standards on imports and was noted by President Trump that the UK would not be expected to take hormone treated beef.

UK-India FTA - The government agreed the Indian Free Trade Agreement which will add £4.8 billion to the UK economy and £2.2 billion in wages every year. The UK estimates an immediate reduction of £400 million in import duties and we expect our annual exports to grow by an additional £15.7 billion (59% higher than historical trend growth) by 2040 whilst Indian exports are expected to be boosted by £9.8 billion (25%), removing India’s current trade surplus with the UK.

UK-EU Negotiations - At the first talks with the EU since 2020 the Government announced a raft of changes that improve the UK’s position both in trade and security when dealing with the EU. This deal is an improvement on the Conservative’s deal in all aspects. The new deal means:

• UK goods travelling to the EU will no longer face extra checks and paperwork. Raw burgers and sausages will no longer be banned and the 34% decline in UK food exports to the EU can start to be reversed. Fish exports expected to be boosted by this, as 70% of all UK fish is exported to the EU and will face reduced checks

• A new £360m "fishing and coastal growth fund" will invest in new technology and equipment whilst the EU fishing vessels in UK waters will provide 25% of their catch to UK fishing fleets.

• British holidaymakers will be able to use more eGates in Europe, ending the dreaded queues at border control. Clarifying that EU countries can offer eGates to UK nationals once a new Entry/Exit System (EES) comes into effect in October this year.

• UK Defence companies given access to £126bn of EU funds for rebooting the Defence Industry, which currently employs 164,000 people in the UK.

• Begun discussions on a Youth Experience scheme to allow a strict number of 18-30 year olds to travel and work throughout European member states.

The Government is moving ahead with these international deals to boost our economy and place the UK once again at the heart of the world economy.

NHS & Nurse Title protection - Over 1000 GP surgeries across the country, including Crossroads surgery in Swindon North will be supported to modernise, backed by biggest public investment in GP facilities for five years. Currently GPs have capacity to take on more patients but can’t because of outdated buildings limiting working spaces. Residents in Swindon North will soon feel the impact of an announcement that will ‘help deliver on Labour’s promise to fix the front door of the NHS’ and would be ‘music to the ears of patients in Swindon North who are too often stuck in the 8am scramble for a GP appointment’.

Environmental Issues - I know we in Swindon have had enough of sewage in our rivers and corporate impunity. Labour’s Water Act introduces the toughest sentencing powers in history for water company executives who pollute and cover it up.

Now in force as of the end of April:

• Executives can face up to two years in prison for illegal sewage dumping

• Water companies must take responsibility and act to clean up our rivers, lakes, and seas

• These measures end decades of disgraceful behaviour from privatised utilities who put profits before public health

This is a major victory for environmental justice—and for every community that has fought to protect our natural resources. Thames Water have already been fined a record £123m for their actions, to be paid by the company not customers.

Westminster Hall

This month I was able to speak in three Westminster Hall debates. These debates are a good way for MPs to speak on issues that don’t go through the main chamber.

Firstly, I called for an end to the use of dogs in animal testing. Advances in Artificial Intelligence have now made it possible to achieve more accurate and humane results without subjecting animals to suffering. Scientific innovation should be used to reduce harm—not excuse it. We must back technologies that provide better outcomes for humans and protect animals at the same time.

This week, I raised concerns from constituents about how future funding for children in adoptive and kinship care will be delivered in practice. One adoptive parent in Swindon North fears delays under the new funding cap could jeopardise his child’s access to vital therapy. Another special guardian expressed uncertainty about what will replace the current Adoption Support Fund. I urged the Minister to provide clarity on both the rollout of the Kinship Care trial and long-term funding, especially for children affected by Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, who must not be left behind.

Finally, I was able to use my platform as an MP to emphasise the need for kind language in a debate on self ID. I asked the house to remember that at the heart of the debate were people who deserved to be treated with dignity and respect.

Road Traffic Update - In the Chamber, I raised a question to the Attorney General about meeting me to discuss prosecutions under Section 3ZB of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

This part of the law deals with cases where a driver causes death while unlicensed, uninsured, or disqualified. It was brought to my attention by road safety campaigners who reached out during my work on the Harry Parker Bill. I was able to raise this directly with the Attorney General in Parliament.

The Attorney General offered her condolences to Harry’s family and stated that every life lost on our roads is one too many, and improving road safety remains a top priority for this Government. She is also happy to meet with me to discuss this further and I look forward to meeting with her in the near future.

Welfare Reforms Statement - On the 26th March, I wrote to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Liz Kendall regarding the Welfare Reforms she brought before Parliament on the 18th March. Since the announcement a number of Constituents have been in contact with me to share their personal stories and concerns about the proposed changes to PIP and Universal Credit. I share your concerns.

I am keen to work with the government to support those disabled people who want to work, into work. I also recognise the need to help young people not in Education, Employment or Training achieve their potential. I am devoted to this through education and apprenticeships locally and will continue to work for a better offer for young people in Swindon North.

However, I currently feel some of the proposals may undermine our efforts to support the very people we want to help and am urging the government to rethink their reforms. It is incumbent on us to ensure that people do not miss out on needed social security, which often allows disabled people the breathing room and space to work or contribute to wider society through volunteering.

As the party of workers it is right that we recognise the dignity and health benefits of work. Yet, in my view we must implement our positive reforms like the 'right to try' guarantee so people can grasp the ladder of opportunity before we remove the floor of social security.

Therefore, I'm asking the government to think again and support disabled people

Casework Update

Numbers of Cases Dealt with in the past month:

In the past month over 900 emails have been sent in reply to Constituents, just over 600 of which are in response to Policy or Campaign questions or requests and just over 300 relate to individual issues.

Over 80 cases relating to personal issues have been raised with me this May and i’m pleased that my team have bee able address these, sorting a number of issues for constituents, from housing to issues with Thames Water or the local council, my caseworkers have been supporting the residents of Swindon North. We’ve also received over 600 questions from members of the public.

I have also been hosting surgeries with residents, listening to views and addressing concerns on topics like the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, SEND education, as well as personal cases.

Hi everyone and welcome to my newsletter and Happy Easter. The purpose of this is to give you an insight into the work i’m up to on a monthly basis as well as provide some insights into life as a Member of Parliament.

You’ll be with me throughout the next 4 and a bit years and we’ll confront some of the major issues facing our country and our constituency. Swindon is my town and always has been, so I want to make a real effort to grow the town and provide more support for the people who live here.

I’m setting out my Missions as your MP for Swindon North, these are to:

• Improve Education in Swindon

• Support Mental Health Provision in our Town

• Expand Swindon’s Economy

• Support Justice in our Town

I’m setting out these missions to provide a framework for residents to understand my priorities, whilst I’ll always engage on any subject that affects constituents, I want to make sure i’m focussed and able to deliver real, tangible change in Swindon North.

I’ll try and address one of these themes and some of the work i’ve been undertaking within them in each newsletter.

Constituency Update

The Harry Parker Bill - On the 4th of February 2025, I brought the Road Traffic (Unlicensed Drivers) Bill, also known as the Harry Parker Bill to Parliament.

The Bill will ensure that those who drive without a license and who cause a death will automatically be judged as driving carelessly and will be charged accordingly.
The Bill is in memory of Harry Parker, a 14 year old boy who was killed by an unlicensed driver in November 2022. After learning the driver would face no charges, I felt like I had to do something but didn’t want to move ahead with any decision that may run contrary to the wishes of Harry’s parents.

I met with them in November 2022 and offered my support, after researching the most effective way to bring about a change and engaging with Parliamentary clerks along side my Parliamentary Assistant, the decision to pursue a 10-Minute Rule Bill was taken alongside Harry's parent's Adam and Kelly (Pictured above). From the outset I have been amazed by their strength and determination to see Harry's legacy cemented into law.

The Harry Parker Bill passed its First Reading by a unanimous vote and will be moving forward to Second Reading on the 13th of June 2025. I am also working with colleagues to see measures from the Bill placed into the Government’s Road Safety Strategy.

Attending Community Groups and Parish Councils - One of the most rewarding parts of being an MP is visiting and supporting local community groups and engaging with residents where they are, outside of pure politics. I’ve always believed that the best way to get involved is through your community, for me this took the form of litter picks and setting up a neighbourhood watch, but for others like Kitty (pictured above) its engaging with your classmates and Brownies to win them over to your cause. In Kitty’s case she invited me to her Brownies session and presented me with a petition of a number of children and parents who just like her are worried about pollution and it’s impact on our local area. As a result of Kitty’s petition, i’ve written to Thames Water and the Borough Council to find a solution that protects local wildlife and keeps our rivers free of pollution.

I’ve also been endeavouring to meet with residents throughout the town and their Parish councils to offer my support in solving issues that are directly impacting residents throughout Swindon North. I recently attended Blunsdon Parish Council and heard a number of concerns raised over the poor internet service in the area and as a result have co-written a letter with the Chair of Blunsdon Parish Council to Openreach to request a meeting with them and the Parish, to find a way forward that improves fibre in the area. I’ve also requested that Wiltshire and Swindon be included on the next wave of the Gigabit Voucher Scheme so we can invest locally in our internet infrastructure.

One of the greatest pleasures is being able to support local charities and enterprises like Phoenix Enterprises (pictured below) who support SEN adults by providing valuable work experience, a chance to socialise and offer career advice services that can help people get into work, if it’s right for them. Visiting their premises I was thoroughly impressed not only by the work ethic of those who worked there, but also their and the staff’s kindness and understanding toward one another and myself.

Community Focus

Every month I’d like to point out some community assets in Swindon that support local people, these can be charities that are doing a great job or simply positive stories within the Constituency.

This month, I’ll highlight a couple of charities i’ve been working with who are making a difference in Swindon North.

Changing Suits - Aims to heal, unite, and foster cultural understanding, ensuring that every story is heard and valued as a tool for personal and communal transformation. Simultaneously, we advocate for a transformation within the broader support sector, promoting a shift towards services that recognise and utilise the power of these deeper more meaningful stories.

Their mission underscores the commitment to fostering strength, amplifying voices, and creating a more inclusive and empathetic support system.

BEST - Encourage young people to be the BEST they can be by providing a support structure through mentoring, challenges made up of easily accessible sessions for all abilities with skilled and understanding mentors and sports coaches

Their teams aim to increase confidence and emotional resilience of the young people they work with, supporting them to progress to a positive future

Parliamentary Business

Major Government Policy Announcements - Since being elected on the 4th July, the Government have announced a number of major policies that will have a lasting impact on our country and moving toward this government’s underlying aim to rebuild our country after 14 years of failure.

Renters Reform - For too many people renting a home has been to insecure and prone to abuse. Whilst there are so many good landlords across the country, the government is committed to providing security for those renting a home and those who rent them out. The reforms will:

• Remove Section 21 – No fault evictions and ensure Section 8 evictions must be heard by a judge

• Allow tenants to challenge substantial rent increases which will be assessed by a tribunal to ensure fairness

• Ensure pets cannot reasonably refused by landlords so owning a pet is not a barrier to a good home

• Ensure the most vulnerable are not placed in a bidding war by ensuring all rents are advertised openly and landlords will be unable to accept an offer that exceeds this specified rent

Alongisde these there are measures that will support renters in launching requests for maintenance and making complaints against their landlord through a private rented sector Ombudsman. I believe that everyone should have a safe and reasonable place to call home and I look forward to voting in full for the Renters Reform Bill.

Workers Rights - As well as implementing Renter Reform, the government are supporting the biggest upgrade to workers rights in decades including:

• Providing flexibility, for workers and businesses alike, is key to answering this challenge and is at the heart of the legislation to upgrade the law to ensure it is fit for modern life and a modern economy.

• Removing the existing two-year qualifying period for protections from unfair dismissal delivering on our manifesto commitment to ensure that all workers have a right to these protections from day one on the job.

• Consult on a new statutory probation period for companies’ new hires. This will allow for a proper assessment of an employee’s suitability to a role as well as reassuring employees that they have rights from day one.

• End exploitative Zero-hours contracts

• End fire and rehire practices

• Establish day one paternity, parental and bereavement leave

• Strengthen Statutory Sick pay and remove the lower earnings limit.

Along with these measures the new legislation will make working more compatible with people’s lives supporting flexible working and require large employers to create action plans on addressing gender pay gaps. The aim is to support employees through the menopause, and ensure protections against dismissal are strengthened for pregnant women and new mothers. These rights will be enforced by a new Fair Work Agency bringing together existing enforcement bodies will also be established to enforce rights such as holiday pay and support employers looking for guidance on how to comply with the law.

Great British Energy - As part of the Government’s mission to reach clean power by 2030 we ended the ban on Onshore Wind Farms within 72 Hours of entering government and established a new, publicly owned, clean energy company headquartered in Aberdeen. Its primary objective is to facilitate, encourage and participate in:

• The production, distribution, storage, and supply of clean energy

• The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from energy produced from fossil fuels

• Improvements in energy efficiency

• Measures for ensuring the security of the supply of energy

GB Energy is also expected to partner with The Crown Estate which has the potential to leverage up to £60bn of private investment into the UK’s drive for energy independence. Beyond this we are investing in British Nuclear energy to ensure we don’t encounter the same errors as in the Coalition Government of 2010-2015, where Nuclear projects were abandoned, that would’ve supported keeping prices low during and in the aftermath of the Pandemic and the price shock of the War in Ukraine. It’s so important that we invest in Green energy production to insulate ourselves from future price shocks and also meet our Climate Change targets.

Immigration

I am incredibly proud of the rich, diverse culture we have in Swindon and across the UK. Immigration can be a positive force for our economy and society, but it must be managed fairly—with a system that works for everyone, not one that places an unsustainable burden on the taxpayer.

When we came into government, we inherited an immigration and asylum system that was simply not fit for purpose. The asylum backlog had reached record highs, with thousands left in limbo in hotels at enormous public cost.

Within months, a Labour government removed 24,000 people with no right to be here—the highest number in eight years. We also launched a new Border Security Command with £150 million of funding to crack down on criminal gangs exploiting our borders.

We’re increasing illegal working raids, strengthening the system with new legislation, and hiring more caseworkers to clear the backlog. At the same time, we’re reforming the Migration Advisory Committee and creating Skills England to tackle the root causes of our long-term reliance on overseas recruitment.

We believe in an immigration system that is fair, firm, and focused—one that recognises the contributions people make while ensuring public confidence is restored.

Leasehold Reform - As someone who sits on the Leasehold Reform APPG I’ve met with the Minister for housing Matthew Pennycook about the timeline and measures that will be in our Leasehold Reforms. The Government recently announced initial changes, ahead of the Bill to empower leaseholders and improve the house purchasing process:

• Empower more leaseholders to take control of their buildings more easily.

• Give power over how service charges are spent, and remove the requirement for leaseholders to cover the legal fees of their freeholder when making a Right to Manage claim.

• Digitise the process of buying/selling houses & make information open to buyers.

Defence Roundtable - I was appointed the Business champion for both Net Zero and Defence on the 19th February 2025 and in this role have been planning to host roundtable events with leading experts and businesses in the fields of Defence and Net Zero. My first Defence roundtable took place on the 11th March. The event itself was a huge success and provided an opportunity to speak with industry experts on the challenges they face in the procurement system. As a solider, I saw firsthand the issue of overspending on poor quality equipment which led to military personnel not receiving the equipment they need to operate effectively.

As the world grows more dangerous, it’s imperative that we invest in our military but do so in a way that ensures high quality equipment makes its way to those that need it. The last administration spend £5m on unnecessary mud flaps and i’m focussed on ensuring every penny of this government’s increase to defence spending, is spent responsibly and on the right priorities. I’ll be writing a report to the Department of business and trade about my wider learnings from the roundtable but am confident that this government can deliver on a defence industry that bolsters British jobs and equips British troops properly.
