Every morning, millions of us wake up thinking about meetings, money, deadlines and dreams.

We complain about traffic, complain that the coffee is cold, complain because life did not unfold exactly as we planned but tonight, somewhere, someone will close their eyes and whisper a prayer that most of us have never had to pray

Not a new car, not a promotion, not a million dollars just another sunrise.

There are people who pray only to witness the next dawn or the next sunset.

Those words carry the weight of countless untold stories.

The patient lying in a hospital bed wondering if this night will be their last.

The mother fighting illness while pretending to be strong because her children are watching.

The father skipping meals so his family can eat.

The refugee who has forgotten what safety feels like.

The lonely elderly person whose greatest wish is for someone to knock on the door.

Life has a strange way of teaching us what matters when everything is going well, we chase bigger houses, bigger titles, bigger dreams but when life becomes fragile, everything changes. Suddenly, breathing is enough.

i don’t really know when this started but i think a lot of people feel it and just don’t talk about it, nothing is actually wrong in your life but you still feel behind somehow like you are not failing exactly and it shows up randomly.

you are just scrolling or lying in bed or finishing a normal day and suddenly you think in your mind that “wait shouldn’t i be further than this by now?” and the strange part is you can not even clearly say what “further” means.

you just feel it and i think the easy answer is “comparison” but that is too simple, people have always compared themselves to others and you know that is not new.

what is different now is that you are seeing way too many lives at once, not full lives. just moments.

someone’s promotion, someone’s trip, someone’s new apartment, someone saying that they “made it”, someone starting something big and your brain doesn’t really separate that as “social media”

it just sees this “everyone is moving forward” and then you look at your own life and think “why does mine feel slower?”

the other thing nobody really says out loud is that we all have this invisible timeline in our heads even if we swear that we don’t and it sounds like this

finish school by this age
get a job by this age
be stable by this age
have things figured out by now

Nobody really gave you that timeline officially, you have just picked it up along the way from school, from parents, from conversations, from watching other people.

so even when your life is actually okay, your brain keeps checking “Am i on track or not?” and if you are not matching that invisible schedule, it starts to feel like something is wrong even when nothing is and honestly, modern life makes this worse because there is no real “enough” anymore.

there is always more

more money you could make
more things you could achieve
more ways you could improve your life
more versions of yourself you could become

even when things are stable, it doesn’t feel like arrival. it just feels like a pause before the next thing you are supposed to fix or upgrade and the tricky part is a lot of people who feel behind are not actually behind at all, they are just in the middle of things (quiet phases, unfinished things, slow progress) those things that don’t look impressive from the outside yet but those don’t show up anywhere.

what shows up is only results not the waiting, not the uncertainty, not the messy in between parts so you end up comparing your behind the scenes to everyone else’s highlight moments and that is where the feeling comes from.

i think the truth is that you are not actually behind, you are just living a life that is not being measured because life doesn’t move in straight lines like we pretend it does.

some people start early, some start late, some change direction completely, some take longer to figure things out. there is not really a shared timeline even though it feels like there is

maybe that feeling isn’t telling you something is wrong, maybe it is just telling you that you have been measuring your life against something that was never real in the first place and when you step back a bit, it’s kind of obvious.

you can not actually be “behind” in something that was never running on the same track for everyone.

you are just in your life, in the middle of it even if it doesn’t feel like progress right now.

This morning, children woke up without the sound of fear.

Parents made breakfast.

Students rushed out the door because they were running late for class.

Someone argued with a moto driver over a fare.

Someone laughed too loudly at brunch.

Someone complained about traffic.

Someone fell in love.

Someone made plans for next year.

That is a beautifully ordinary things😍and yet, there was a time when even ordinary was a luxury.

That is what Kwibohora means to me.

Not just the liberation of a country🚫 Ahubwo the return of ordinary life.

We often think freedom is loud.

We imagine victory parades, flags waving in the wind, speeches that echo through history but i think freedom is much quieter than that.

Freedom is a mother sleeping peacefully because she knows her children will wake up tomorrow.

Freedom is a student dreaming about a career instead of simply hoping to survive.

Freedom is planting a tree you may never sit under but believing someone else will.

It is the privilege of planning a future👌

The older i get, the more i realize that peace is one of the few things we only fully appreciate after seeing what life looks like without it.

Many of us were born here in Rwanda🇷🇼 where peace feels normal and that is a blessing to us But it also comes with a responsibility.

Because the easiest thing to take for granted is the thing someone else sacrificed everything to protect.

There are people whose names most of us will never know👊#unknownsoldier

People who never got the chance to grow old👊

People whose dreams ended so ours could begin.

History remembers some of them by many others remain known only to the families who still carry their memory💔

Whether remembered by millions or by a handful, their sacrifice deserves gratitude🌹

Rwanda Defence Force traces its roots to those who fought during Rwanda's liberation. Behind every uniform is a person with a family, a story, and a commitment to serving the country. On Kwibohora day, many Rwandans also reflect on the service of those who continue to protect the peace that has been built.

President Paul Kagame has been a central figure in Rwanda’s reconstruction since liberation and many Rwandans associate this period with rebuilding institutions, expanding opportunities, and working toward national unity after unimaginable tragedy.

But perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay is not found in words, it is found in how we live.

Every act of kindness over hatred.

Every bridge built instead of burned.

Every child educated.

Every honest day's work.

Every refusal to pass prejudice to the next generation.

Those choices become part of the story of liberation too.

Kwibohora is not only about remembering where Rwanda has been.

It is also about asking where we are going.

Will we leave this country kinder than we found it?

Will we protect peace with the same determination others fought to make possible?

Will we remember that freedom is not only inherited, it is also maintained?

These questions belong to all of us.

Because nations are not built by heroes alone, they are built by ordinary people choosing every single day to do extraordinary things with the freedom they have been given.

So today, I am grateful for those who sacrificed,for those who serve, for the chance to wake up in a country where tomorrow can be imagined.

Freedom is not just a chapter in a history book may friend it is the miracle of being able to plan for next week.

To laugh with friends

To dream without fear

To call this place home

and perhaps that is the greatest victory of all

There is a special kind of loneliness that many people in Kigali carry.

You can be sitting in a café in Kimihurura, walking through downtown Kigali, or riding a moto home at night, surrounded by people, and still feel completely alone.

Because sometimes, the hardest thing is not being alone.

It’s becoming your own support system.

Life in Kigali moves fast. Everyone seems busy building something starting businesses, chasing jobs, paying bills, supporting family, and trying to create a better future.

On social media, everyone looks happy. People are posting beautiful views from restaurants, sharing achievements, and smiling in pictures.

But behind many of those smiles are people carrying heavy things in silence.

People who learned not to ask for help.

People who became their own safe place because they had no other choice.

Maybe life disappointed them.

Maybe friends disappeared when things got difficult.

Maybe they were told to “be strong” so many times that they stopped showing their pain.

And slowly, they became the person they could depend on.

You learn to comfort yourself after a difficult day.

You tell yourself that tomorrow will be better.

You celebrate your small victories alone.

You fight your battles quietly because you feel like nobody would understand.

People call you strong.

But they don’t see the nights when you feel tired.

They don’t see the moments when you wish someone would ask, “How are you really doing?”

Being your own support system teaches you many things.

It teaches you independence.

It teaches you how to survive.

But it also teaches you how to hide your pain.

After a while, you stop expecting people to show up.

My phone lit up at 10:47 PM.

The name on the screen made me smile.

It had been months since we last spoke. Months since they had checked in. Months since I had heard anything from them.

For a brief moment, I thought, maybe they miss me.

Maybe they remembered one of our conversations. Maybe they were curious about how life had been treating me. Maybe this was one of those random moments when someone thinks about you and decides to reach out.

I replied almost immediately.

The conversation started warmly.

“Hey, how have you been?”

“Long time!”

“Hope you’re doing well.”

I smiled as I typed back.

Then, a few messages later, the real reason appeared.

“Actually, I wanted to ask you for a favor, bruh”

And just like that, the excitement disappeared.

Not because they needed help.

Not because helping people is a burden.

But because I suddenly realized something that felt heavier than the favor itself:

If they didn’t need anything, would they have reached out at all?

That question stayed with me.

I think most people know this feeling.

The friend who disappears for months and only remembers your existence when they need advice.

The relative who never checks on you but somehow always finds your number when they’re in trouble.

The former colleague who suddenly becomes friendly when they’re looking for a recommendation.

The person who has mastered the art of reaching out only when there’s something to gain.

At first, you don’t notice it.

You tell yourself they’re busy.

Life happens.

People get occupied.

And that’s true.

But eventually, a pattern becomes impossible to ignore.

Weeks pass without a single message.

Months go by without anyone asking how you’re doing.

Nobody checks in.

Nobody wonders how your life is unfolding.

Then one day, your phone rings.

And before you answer, you already know.

They need something.

Not you.

Something from you.

And there is a difference.

When You Need Someone Too

A few years ago, I went through one of the most difficult periods of my life.

From the outside, everything looked normal.

I was functioning.

Working.

Showing up.

Smiling when necessary.

But internally, I was exhausted.

The kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix.

I carried worries I rarely spoke about.

Questions I couldn’t answer.

Fears I didn’t know how to share.

During that season, I wasn’t looking for solutions.

I wasn’t expecting people to rescue me.

I simply wanted to feel remembered.

A text.

A call.

A simple, “How are you holding up?”

Something that reminded me I wasn’t invisible.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

Nothing.

The silence became familiar.

Then one afternoon, my phone buzzed.

For a second, I felt hopeful.

Maybe someone had noticed.

Maybe someone genuinely wanted to check in.

I opened the message.

It was another request.

Another favor.

Another problem someone wanted me to solve.

I stared at the screen longer than I should have.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was disappointed.

At that moment, I felt less like a person and more like a service people subscribed to whenever they needed help.

That’s when I understood something painful:

Being useful is not the same thing as being valued.

The Burden of Being Reliable

The painful thing about these situations is that most people aren’t intentionally selfish.

They don’t wake up thinking, “How can I use someone today?”

Often, they’ve simply become accustomed to your reliability.

You’re the one who always answers.

The one who always listens.

The one who always helps.

The one who always understands.

And because you rarely complain, people assume you’re fine.

Because you appear strong, they assume you don’t need support.

Because you’re dependable, they forget you’re human too.

They remember your generosity.

But they forget your loneliness.

They remember your availability.

But they forget your needs.

And slowly, without anyone meaning to, the relationship becomes one-sided.

You become everyone’s emergency contact.

Yet somehow, nobody checks whether you’re having an emergency of your own.

Learning to Protect My Energy

For a long time, I thought being a good person meant always being available.

Always saying yes.

Always helping.

Always showing up.

Now, I see things differently.

Kindness is beautiful.

Generosity is beautiful.

Helping people is beautiful.

But constantly pouring into relationships that only function when you’re giving eventually leaves you empty.

Not everyone deserves unlimited access to your time, energy, and emotional capacity.

Some people only know how to take.

Others know how to stay.

Learning the difference can save you a lot of heartbreak.

These days, I pay attention.

Not to who calls me when they’re struggling.

Most people do that.

I pay attention to who calls when they need nothing at all.

Who sends a message just because.

Who celebrates my wins.

Who notices when I’ve gone quiet.

Who asks how I’m doing and genuinely wants to know.

Those people are rare.

And because they’re rare, they’re worth appreciating.

My Advice

The pain of being remembered only when needed isn’t really about favors.

It’s about wondering whether people love you or simply love what you can do for them.

It’s about questioning whether your presence matters when your usefulness is removed.

And perhaps that’s why it hurts so much.

Because deep down, every human being wants the same thing:

To be remembered without a reason.

To be valued without conditions.

To be loved without having to earn it first.

A random message.

A genuine check-in.

A conversation with no hidden agenda.

Sometimes, those small gestures mean more than people realize.

Because they remind us of something we all need to hear from time to time“You matter to me, even when I need nothing from you.”

Hello my brothers and sisters in Christ👋👋👋👋

There is one of the most common phrases in christian circles is " i’m just waiting on God" , I have said it and you probably said it too.

Sometimes it's true, sometimes waiting is exactly what God is asking us to do but lately i have been wondering if we use that phrase more often than we should because if we are honest "waiting on God" can sometimes become a very spiritual way of avoiding responsibility and that is a difficult thing to admit not because we don't trust God but because deep down, we know there are moments when God has already spoken, and we are still asking Him to repeat Himself.

Many of us are praying for things we secretly know require action.

We pray for opportunities but we never apply.

We pray for friendship but we never reach out.

We pray for healing but we avoid the difficult conversations.

We pray for purpose but we refuse to start until we are guaranteed success.

We pray for marriage but we run from vulnerability and then we wonder why nothing changes🤔perhaps the better question is

How many of our unanswered prayers are actually unattempted acts of obedience?

that question makes me uncomfortable because it forces me to examine the difference between faith and fear.

the truth is that waiting feels safe, waiting protects us from rejection, waiting protects us from failure, waiting protects us from embarrassment as long as we are waiting👉we never have to find out what happens if we try.

Fear is clever, it introduces itself as fear instead it disguises itself as “wisdom”, as caution, as “perfectionism”, as"waiting for the right time" sometimes it even disguises itself as “spirituality” and before we know it, we have built a comfortable life around potential not obedience.

When i read scripture, i notice something that the people God used rarely had complete information.

✅Noah built before the rain

✅Abraham left before he knew the destination

✅Joshua marched before the walls fell

✅Peter stepped out before he knew whether the water would hold him

Again and again, God gave enough light for the next step not the entire journey.

Many of us want the opposite, we want guarantees before obedience, we want certainty before commitment, we want a map before movement but faith has never operated that way.

Faith is not seeing the whole staircase, it is trusting God enough to take the next step.

God's will is often discovered through movement not merely through contemplation

We spend years searching for clarity sometimes clarity is waiting on the other side of action.

Not reckless action , not foolish action but obedient action.

I like those that says "I don't have every answer but i trust God enough to move forward👊”

If you are in a season of waiting, this is not a criticism some seasons genuinely require patience, some seasons genuinely require stillness but perhaps it is worth asking yourself that

“Am i waiting because God told me to wait? or am i waiting because i’m afraid to move?”

The answers to those two questions may look similar from the outside but they lead to very different lives.

i don't think👎that is entirely true sometimes but what we miss is not the person,it is the version of ourselves that existed around that person.

The version that smiled at random notifications😄

The version that checked their phone before sleeping🛌

The version that believed something beautiful might be waiting tomorrow✨

When someone leaves, he/she don't just take his/her presence with them, they take future you imagined.

A language only the two of you spoke and suddenly, you are not only grieving a person.

You are grieving a version of yourself that no longer has a place to exist.

That is why moving on feels strange🤨

You can meet new people🫂

You can stay busy📵

You can even be happy👊every now and then, you miss a feeling you can't quite describe.

Because it was not really them you were looking for, it was the person you became when you believed they were staying.

The good news is that the version of you was not created by them(never)🙅‍♂️

It was created by your ability to care, to hope,to love and if you created it once, you can create it again👌

Maybe with someone new🌹maybe on your own but it will return and next time, it won't depend on someone else's decision to stay.

A sentence that made me stop scrolling and think is

"I've never looked at it that way before."

The older i get👴 the more i realize that attraction has very little to do with what first catches your eye and everything to do with what captures your attention.

Anyone can look good for a moment but very few people can hold your curiosity.

That is why I keep finding myself drawn to writers, thinkers, and people who aren't afraid to share what's actually going on inside their heads.

A good mind is difficult to ignore and a thoughtful question is difficult to forget.

One of my favorite things about platforms like substack is that people reveal themselves without realizing it not through photos or bios but through what they choose to write about when nobody is asking them to.

You learn what frustrates them😖🤪what excites them🤪,what they believe,what they refuse to compromise on and somewhere between the paragraphs, you meet the real person🤗

I think thats why i have become less interested in impressions and more interested in perspectives.

Less interested in appearances and more interested in attention.

Those are the questions that stay with me:

• Can this person make me think?

• Can this person teach me something?

• Can this person challenge a belief i have held for years?

• Can this person make an ordinary topic feel extraordinary?

Maybe that is why some people become memorable long before they become familiar.

Not because they are trying to impress anyone but because they are brave enough to be honest.

Maybe the most attractive thing about a person is not face, job or even the confidence maybe it is their ability to make you curious enough to want to know what comes next👌

One day, i was prepared to tell someones daughter those three word ❤️ILY❤️We had been friends since we were child, we were the kind of friends who know each other’s very well, if i said VERY WELL just know i mean it 😊I was about to risk all of that for three small words. My heart was going to separate with my body and my soul that day. I was thinking that 💭“If i tell her, i might lose her forever” not because she would be angry but because things would become strange between us⛓️‍💥and that strangeness could not be undone.

That is the scary part of loving someone before you know if they love you back. i want to let you know that you are not just giving love,you are giving them the power to hurt you and hoping that she/he will be gentle.

when you love someone, you have firstly to say inside your head that ”I am ready to be hurt by you.”

Be ready my friend, let’s back on my story, that day i said it anyway💌💌“I am in love with you.”💌💌There was a pause.

It felt like five seconds or maybe 5 years then she looked at me with a soft,sad smile and said “I know and I wish I felt the same”😥😥the hurt came just as I feared😥 It sat in my chest like a heavy, cold rock.

for weeks, I went over the moment again and again. i was telling myself that”I wished i had kept quiet”😔 but slowly something else rose up under the pain that was “PEACE” not because the result changed but because i had finally been honest about how much I felt. I loved her enough to let her break my heart😔and still, I chose to speak.

We do not talk enough about this part of love🥹🥹 We make love pretty

the fast heartbeat, the first kiss, the “I love you too” but before all that, there is a quiet lonely moment.

It is the choice to let down every wall and say that ”You can break my heart and I will not stop you” it is scary but it is needed. This is the price of love that is real, not just a show.

Real love is a brave act my friend , it is the friend who risks a friendship. the parent knows that child will one day grow up and leave home.Every true💞“I love you”💞 holds a silent promise which is “I will be here even when it hurts me”❤️‍🩹

I have learned that being hurt does not always mean being destroyed sometimes it just means you were brave enough to feel something true.

maybe you are standing somewhere right now, trying to find the words but make sure you understand that to love is to risk being hurt? right.
