The Fifth Commandment

You shall not murder.

What does this mean?

We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.

We like to keep the Fifth Commandment at a safe distance. Most of us go through life confident that we are in full compliance. We have never held a weapon with lethal intent, never been tried in a courtroom for homicide, and never taken a human life. We congratulate ourselves on being peaceful, civil, and law-abiding.

The Fifth Commandment, however, is not a simple statute prohibiting blood on your hands. It is a divine verdict on the anger, envy, and cold indifference that live in the human heart.

Murder without Weapons

When Luther unpacks the Fifth Commandment in the Small Catechism, he does not start with weapons or crime scenes. He moves straight to the daily needs of our neighbor: “so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.”

Notice what this definition does. It transforms a negative restriction into an absolute demand for active mercy.

In the Large Catechism, Luther exposes how easily we commit murder without ever pulling a trigger. He argues that whenever you see a neighbor suffering, cold, hungry, or endangered, and you turn a blind eye to protect your own comfort or wealth, you have committed murder in the sight of God:

“If you send a person away naked or hungry when you could clothe or feed him, you let him starve to death... Therefore it is quite rightly called a murderer and executioner whoever does not feed and save a neighbor when he can.”

By Luther’s standard, the Fifth Commandment does not merely accuse the violent criminal. It accuses the respectable citizen who refuses to be bothered by another person’s distress. It convicts us when we use harsh words to destroy a reputation, when we nurse grudges, or when we withhold help simply because we feel the sufferer “deserves” their plight.

The Myth of Innocence

Our natural instinct is to reduce the Law to outward behavior so that we can maintain the illusion of our own righteousness. We want the Fifth Commandment to mean: “Don’t break the civil law.” That way, we can despise our neighbor in secret, harbor anger in our thoughts, and ignore the needy on our streets, all while keeping our moral self-image intact.

The Fifth Commandment shatters this self-justification. It exposes the fact that we naturally value our own safety, ease, and emotional satisfaction far more than the physical life and well being of the person standing next to us.

The Law leaves no room for neutrality. To fail to protect and preserve life is, before God, to participate in its destruction.

The Word That Gives Life

When the Fifth Commandment strips away our self-assumed innocence and unmasks us as murderous creatures, the Gospel speaks an entirely different reality.

The Gospel is not a moral campaign urging us to be kinder, nor is it a set of guidelines for peaceful living. It is the announcement of what God has done for hostile, self-centered human beings.

When God came into the world in Jesus Christ, He did not come to execute sinners or demand that they pay for their hatred. Instead, Christ stepped into a world governed by anger, malice, and self-preservation. We turned our hostility directly against Him and murdered the Lord of Life on a cross.

Yet in the ultimate turn of divine mercy, God turned our act of murder into the very site of our salvation. On the cross, Christ bore the weight of our hatred and paid for our systemic indifference. In His resurrection, He does not return to exact vengeance on His killers; He returns speaking peace and offering unconditional pardon.

God does not wait for you to purge your heart of all anger or become a perfect humanitarian before He accepts you. In the spoken Word, in Baptism, and in the Lord’s Supper, Christ delivers His own life to you completely free of charge.

You no longer need to protect your own life at the expense of others, nor do you need to destroy your neighbor to secure your own place in the world. Christ has already given you an unassailable life in God, freeing you to look at your neighbor not as a threat or a burden, but as someone to be helped, defended, and supported in every physical need.

There is a comfortable lie that liberals both inside and outside of Israel tell themselves: that the crisis in the region is fundamentally a crisis of leadership. If only the current Prime Minister could be removed, if only the ballot box could excise this single, polarizing figure, the nightmare would lift. The political discourse surrounding upcoming Israeli elections operates almost entirely on this delusion. It assumes that the current destruction, the state sanctioned violence, and the systematic denial of Palestinian humanity are merely the personal pathologies of one man and his coalition of far right extremists.

This is a profound misunderstanding of how historical and political structures actually function. The error lies in mistaking the outcome of a system for its cause.

The Myth of Electoral Redemption

The illusion of salvation through the ballot box rests on a fundamental misconception: that a political system built upon structural exclusion can somehow vote its way into justice.

Consider the current reality. While the national security minister openly suggests targeted assassinations of dozens of people a night in Gaza, explicitly declaring during a nominal ceasefire that there are people there who are not worthy of life, the mainstream opposition does not recoil in horror at the principle. Their critique is rarely ethical; it is technical. Opposition figures consistently posture as being more hawkish, promising that under their command, the state would act with even fewer restraints.

Look across the Zionist political spectrum. Where is the candidate calling for an end to the siege of Gaza? Who among the viable mainstream contenders is campaigning on a return to two state negotiations, a withdrawal from occupied Palestinian territories, or a retreat from Syrian and Lebanese lands? The answer is simple: none. The consensus is complete. The debate between the government and its mainstream opponents is not over whether to maintain the regime of total control over Palestinian lives, but over who can manage that control most efficiently.

The Inward Facing Protest

This dynamic was laid bare during the massive judicial reform demonstrations that swept the country in 2023. Western observers and Israeli liberals framed the protests as a heroic struggle for democracy. But democracy for whom?

The entire debate over judicial reform was an internal feud over the distribution of power among Jewish Israelis. It was a squabble over how the executive, legislative, and judicial branches should share authority within the sovereign group. The system’s actual subjects, millions of Palestinians living under military occupation or siege, were entirely absent from the calculation. Indeed, Palestinian flags were actively banned from the rallies. The democracy being defended was one that explicitly required the permanent subjugation of another people.

When the opposition speaks of preserving the rule of law, they mean a law that protects the privileges of the dominant group while maintaining a legal apparatus to manage the disenfranchised.

The Exclusionary Consensus

The same hypocrisy defines the discourse around political alliances. The mere possibility of including Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel in a governing coalition is treated by the political establishment as a form of treason.

When a previous government briefly relied on the vote of an Arab party to secure a parliamentary majority, the centrist and moderate parties were incensed. The opposition’s commitment to a strictly Zionist coalition is not a fringe position; it is the baseline requirement of mainstream Israeli politics. The message to Palestinian citizens of Israel is unequivocal: you may pay taxes, and you may staff the hospitals, where roughly 40 percent of the medical workforce is Arab, but you must remain politically silent.

Even the simple act of healthcare workers speaking their native language has been met with campaigns to ban Arabic in hospital wards, on the grounds that hearing the language causes anxiety to wounded soldiers. The system demands their labor to heal its bodies while demanding their total erasure as political and human beings.

Lawlessness as State Policy

Nowhere is the seamless continuity between the state, the army, and civilian violence clearer than in the occupied West Bank. The surge in settler violence is not a breakdown of state order; it is state policy by other means.

Consider the dynamic on the ground:

• Direct Aggression: Settlers lay siege to Palestinian villages, cutting off water and electricity, surrounding homes, and attempting to burn residents inside.

• State Co-optation: When military units attempt to intervene, often only under intense international pressure, politicians step in to restrict the army’s authority, handing jurisdiction to a civilian police force that actively refuses to make arrests.

• Electoral Currency: Allowing settlers to act with impunity serves a vital domestic political function: it demonstrates to a radicalized electorate that the government will not let the formal apparatus of the state restrain the settler movement.

The army does not exist to restrain the settlers; its mandate is to protect them while they carry out the enterprise of displacement. Whether the prime minister is a right wing populist or a self styled centrist, the machinery of territorial expansion operates without interruption.

The Trial of Negligence, Not Guilt

Why, then, is the current prime minister so widely despised by his domestic opponents? Not because of the catastrophic destruction wrought upon Gaza, but because he failed in his primary duty as the manager of security.

The mainstream opposition wants an investigation to hold the leadership accountable for negligence, for failing to prevent the breaches of October 7, and for previously allowing funds to flow to Hamas as a divide and rule strategy. They do not oppose the ongoing military operations because they find them morally abhorrent; they oppose the current leadership because they view it as incompetent. The prime minister, in turn, spends his political energy proving that he alone can resist international pressure to relent.

An election fought on these terms is not a fork in the road; it is a validation of the direction already chosen. To believe that a change in leadership will bring peace, justice, or a reprieve for Palestinians is to indulge in political fantasy.

The Bondage of the Will and the Need for Grace

The tragic reality is that humanity cannot vote its way out of the bondage of sin. When a political project is built upon the premise that one group of image bearers must be dominated, crushed, or erased for another to flourish, no ballot box can grant redemption. Elections under such a consensus do not offer a path to righteousness; they merely allow a fallen system to choose which steward will administer its law.

The political establishment, like the human heart apart from grace, remains turned entirely inward upon itself. It seeks security in arms, righteousness in power, and peace through the subjugation of the neighbor. But human law, when weaponized to justify oppression and devalue human life, serves only as an instrument of death. It cannot justify, and it cannot heal.

True liberation will not come from the ballot box, nor will justice be delivered by changing the driver of a broken worldly regime. Salvation belongs to God alone, who tears down the mighty from their seats, exalts the humble, and calls His creation to a righteousness that transcends the false choices of worldly politics. Until the idolatry of dominance is confessed and broken, the machinery of judgment will continue to turn, regardless of who wins the vote.

The Fourth Commandment

Honor your father and your mother.

What does this mean?

We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.

We live under the delusion that we are self-made creatures. We prefer to believe that we dropped from the sky as autonomous individuals, fully capable of defining our own identity, destiny, and worth completely apart from the past.

The Fourth Commandment shatters this modern myth of self-creation.

In the Small Catechism, Luther transitions from the First Table of the Law (our relationship with God) to the Second Table (our relationship with our neighbor). Right at the front door of human society stands parents. Before God addresses our relationship with bosses, rulers, or peers, He binds us to the concrete human beings through whom He gave us life.

God’s Mask on Earth

In the Large Catechism, Luther elevates the status of parents to a staggering degree. He points out that God attaches a unique distinction to fatherhood and motherhood that He gives to no other human relationship.

Luther writes:

“To the status of father and mother He has given special distinction above all statuses that are beneath it, that He does not simply command us to love our parents, but to honor them... For to honor comprehends not only love, but also deference, humility, and modesty, as though to a majesty hidden there.”

Parents serve as what Luther calls larvae Dei, the masks of God. God does not drop bread from the sky to feed infants; He uses parents. God does not govern civil order directly from heaven; He uses earthly authorities. When we honor father and mother, we are not worshipping them as divine, but we are acknowledging that God has placed them over us as His instruments to sustain creation.

Yet our natural inclination is to despise authority. We resent being dependent. We scoff at our parents’ flaws, brush off civil governance when it inconveniences us, and demand total autonomy. In the Large Catechism, Luther warns against those who view their parents merely as old people to be tolerated or bypassed:

“Where the heart is so disposed toward parents, it will not be glad to yield obedience or show honor... Therefore it is a great thing in God’s eyes that we honor those whom He has appointed over us.”

The Authority Trap

The Law operating through the Fourth Commandment does not merely require polite behavior. It demands a heart that naturally defers, serves, and cherishes those placed above us.

This exposes a deep spiritual failure. We fail to honor parents and authority because we want to be our own ultimate authority. We want to sit in the judgment seat over those God placed over us. The Law reveals that our rebellion against earthly parents is fundamentally a rebellion against God Himself, who ordained the order of creation.

Left to ourselves, we turn authority into a battleground for power, either exploiting it when we have it or despising it when we are subject to it.

The Word That Restores

When the Law leaves us convicted as rebellious children, the Gospel speaks an entirely different reality.

The Gospel is not a lecture on how to become a better citizen or a more respectful child. It is the announcement of what God has done for rebellious human beings. Jesus Christ came into a world fractured by human pride and submitted Himself to earthly parents and civil authorities, even when those authorities abused their power to condemn Him.

On the cross, Christ bore the weight of our relentless desire for total independence. We used authority to put God to death, crucifying the only truly righteous Son. Yet in the resurrection, God turns our rebellion into the very place where mercy is declared.

God does not demand that you earn His love by demonstrating a perfect track record of obedience to authority. Instead, He adopts you as His own child purely by grace for Christ’s sake. In Baptism, He gives you His own name and makes you an heir of His kingdom, completely apart from your moral performance.

Received as a free gift, this Gospel changes how we look at parents and authority. You no longer have to demand perfection from your parents or authorities to honor them, because your ultimate security and identity do not depend on them. You are freed to serve, love, and cherish flawed human beings, not because they have earned it, but because God has first shown His unconditional love to you.

To declare an unconditional (quia) subscription to the Book of Concord in modern Lutheranism is to invite immediate suspicion from almost every angle.

To the progressive institutionalist, quia subscription looks like rigid fundamentalism, a legalistic obsession with 16th-century documents. To the traditionalist, my rejection of the classic Reformed-style “Third Use of the Law” (as a static guide or rulebook for the Christian life) makes my quia pledge look paradoxical, if not outright dishonest. How can someone unconditionally subscribe to the Lutheran Confessions while holding that Article VI of the Formula of Concord works rhetorically to crush the old Adam rather than offer a third, distinct function of law for the renewed believer?

The answer for me lies in understanding what the Confessions are actually meant to do. They are not an exhaustive encyclopedia of systematic theology, nor are they a legalistic straitjacket.

In his 1991 essay Confessional Subscription: What Does It Mean for Lutherans Today?, theologian Gerhard Forde proposed two distinct concepts that clarify the purpose of the Lutheran Confessions. First, he described them as a charter of freedom. The confessions do not exist to shackle the preacher or burden the hearer with mandatory theological hoops. Instead, they serve to protect and proclaim the absolute freedom of the Gospel. Their goal is to liberate us to preach Christ unconditionally, ensuring that nothing gets in the way of God’s free grace.

Second, Forde argued that the confessions function as a plumb line. Just as a builder uses a plumb line as a fixed, objective tool to test whether a wall is straight, the confessions give the church an unyielding reference point to test whether our preaching remains true. The plumb line checks our practice to ensure that our message does not tilt back into legalism or drift away into vagueness.

When these two ideas work together, the picture becomes clear: the confessions serve as a plumb line specifically to protect our charter of freedom. They give us a firm, unyielding measure to ensure that the Gospel remains a pure, unconditional promise rather than being subtly turned back into a set of conditional requirements.

The Trap of Quatenus and the Failure of Escapism

A quatenus subscription, subscribing to the Confessions insofar as they agree with Scripture, sounds humble and pious on the surface. But as Forde pointed out, quatenus functions in practice as an escape hatch. It turns the subscriber into the judge over the confession, allowing theologians to use historical filters or critical tools to evade, relativize, or escape the sharp demands of the text.

Forde warned that the primary question of subscription is not whether we are legally bound enough, but whether we are freed enough by what the confessions say to preach with radical boldness. When a church body drifts into a loose quatenus mindset, it abandons its plumb line. We do not need to look far to see the consequences of this escape.

Look at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Decades of treating confessional subscription as a loose historical preference opened the door to theological erosion. The ELCA compromised its confessional integrity in ecumenical actions, such as entering into Called to Common Mission with the Episcopal Church. In doing so, it compromised historic Lutheran distinctions regarding the ministry, the historic episcopate, and the clarity of the Gospel to achieve institutional unity. When the confessions cease to function as a firm plumb line, a denomination simply bends to whatever social, political, or ecumenical winds happen to be blowing.

On the other hand, look at the theological drift taking root inside many nominally “confessional” Lutheran congregations. Sidelining the Book of Concord does not just lead to social liberalism; it opens the floodgates to American Evangelical theology, methods, worship, and moralistic preaching. Without the sharp edge of the confessions, congregations inevitably slip into a shallow revivalism where the Law becomes mere practical advice and the Gospel is reduced to a human decision.

In both directions, liberal revisionism and American Evangelical practice, the result is identical: the unconditional promise of Christ is lost.

Article VI: Law as Preaching, Not Blueprint

How, then, do I reconcile this quia subscription with my understanding of Formula of Concord Article VI?

Many treat FC VI as if it establishes the Law as a friendly, neutral map for the Christian journey, a blueprint for the “new man.” But if the Law ever becomes an easy, non-killing, informative guide, it ceases to be the Law of God. The Law always accuses; it always drives to the cross (the second use).

A careful reading of Article VI itself reinforces that the “Third Use” is not a separate, gentle category of Law, but the continuous application of the killing Law to the believer because of the persistent Old Adam. Article VI explicitly states:

“The reason why the law is to be preached to believers is that... the Old Adam still clings to them in their nature, heart, mind, and will... Therefore, the law of God is to be constantly urged upon them.” (FC SD VI.9)

The text makes clear that the Law must be preached to the Christian not because the Spirit-led “new man” needs a whip, but because the believer remains simul iustus et peccator (simultaneously saint and sinner):

“For the Old Adam, like an unmanageable, stubborn donkey, is still a part of them, and it must be coerced not only with the instruction and threat of the law, but also with its punishments and plagues.” (FC SD VI.24)

The Law in Article VI operates rhetorically in preaching. It attacks the stubborn flesh of the believer, exposing the persistent unbelief that clings even to the regenerated. It functions as the 1st and 2nd use precisely within the daily life of the Christian to put the old nature to death so that the new creature, born purely of the Gospel, can spontaneously produce good works without needing a legal whip:

“When a person is born anew by the Spirit of God and freed from the law... he lives according to the unchanging will of God, as the law prescribes, because the Holy Spirit has written it on his heart.” (FC SD VI.17)

To read Article VI this way is not a rejection of the Formula; it is a refusal to let the Formula be hijacked by a scholastic framework that undermines the rest of the Book of Concord. It is taking the solid core of the confessions seriously enough to let the Law kill the sinner so the Gospel can make alive the saint.

The Courage to Confess

This brings me back to my initial dilemma: how can someone unconditionally subscribe quia to the Book of Concord while rejecting the standard view of the Third Use of the Law?

Because quia subscription is not an pledge of allegiance to a static, legalistic system or a Reformed-style rulebook for the Christian life. I subscribe quia precisely because the Confessions, when allowed to perform their true task, protect the radical, unmerited Gospel from every attempt to turn it back into Law. Rejecting a non-killing, purely instructional “third use” is not a violation of my pledge; it is taking Article VI seriously enough to let the Law do its killing work so that the Gospel can genuinely give life.

Forde was right: confessional subscription is ultimately an act of daring. It is the bold decision to stand with the confessors and say, “This is the truth that sets us free”.

Without an unconditional quia subscription, we inevitably drift into the comfortable ambiguity that ruined the ELCA, or the squishy moralism imported from American Evangelical theology into Lutheran congregations. We do not need fewer confessional boundaries; we need to recover the confessions for what they actually are: a charter of radical Christian freedom, guarding the sharp, unmerited, and unstoppable promise of Jesus Christ.

The Third Commandment

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

What does this mean?

We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.

We naturally prefer a God who marks out sacred days on a calendar over a God who actually speaks.

A holy day is manageable. You can keep it, observe it, cross it off your schedule, and feel a sense of religious accomplishment. But when God speaks, the control shifts entirely out of your hands.

This is why Luther’s explanation of the Third Commandment in the Small Catechism is so jarring. He completely strips away the notion that keeping the Sabbath is about calendar management, special rituals, or bodily rest. He pivots immediately from time to speech: to keep the Sabbath holy is to “not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.”

Rest is Not the Goal

In the Large Catechism, Luther makes a sweeping move that undoes centuries of religious legalism. He points out that, according to the Old Testament outward sense, the physical rest of the Sabbath was given to a specific nation and was tied to bodily labor. But in the New Testament, physical rest is merely an outward necessity so that people have time to assemble.

The rest itself is not what makes the day holy. As Luther writes:

“This commandment, therefore, according to its gross sense, does not concern us Christians... However, to grab a Christian sense for the simple concerning what God requires in this commandment, note that we keep holy days not for the sake of intelligent and learned Christians... but first of all also for bodily causes and necessities... But especially for this reason, that on such day of rest... opportunity and time be taken to attend divine service, so that we come together to hear and treat of God’s Word.”

To put it bluntly: sitting on your couch on Sunday morning doing nothing is not keeping the Sabbath. Physical inactivity carries no spiritual weight.

You do not make a day holy by your piety, your stillness, or your church attendance. God’s Word alone makes everything holy. “Therefore,” Luther asserts, “where the Word of God is preached, accepted, considered, and pondered, there both person, day, and work are sanctified.”

Despising the Word

How do we break the Third Commandment? We assume we break it when we work on Sunday. But Luther points us to a far deeper, more insidious rebellion: despising preaching and His Word.

We despise the Word not just by openly mocking it, but by getting bored with it. We treat it as old news, as an abstract doctrine we already know, or as a moral lesson we have already mastered. In the Large Catechism, Luther calls out those who listen to the sermon just to check a box:

“Furthermore, those self-satisfied spirits belong here who, when they have heard a sermon or two, become sick and weary of it, thinking that they know it all well enough and need no more instruction... They think this commandment is kept if they hear a little sermon once a week, but the rest of the time they care nothing for God’s Word.”

When you treat the proclamation of God’s Word as an optional self-help talk or a familiar routine, you are attempting to tame it. You are trying to protect yourself from what the Word actually comes to do: to kill your old self and raise you to new life.

The Word as an Event

The Law in the Third Commandment exposes our complete indifference to God’s speech. Left to ourselves, we would rather manage our own schedules, rest on our own terms, and listen to voices that confirm our own goodness. We do not “gladly hear and learn” the Word; we endure it or manipulate it.

Right here, at the point where our religious routines collapse into apathy, the Gospel speaks.

The Gospel is not a command to pay better attention in church or to institute a stricter devotional life. It is the announcement of what God does through His spoken Word. The God of the universe does not remain silent, nor does He demand that you climb up to Him through spiritual meditation. He comes down to you in the external Word preached into your ears.

When Christ came preaching the Kingdom, religious people despised His Word because it offered unconditional mercy to sinners while shattering their self-made holiness. They silenced Him on the cross. Yet in the resurrection, God validated that very Word of Grace.

The Gospel is the news that God’s Word is not a burden to be borne, but a creative force that bestows life. It does not demand that you make yourself holy; it makes you holy by speaking forgiveness directly to you for Christ’s sake.

In Baptism, in the Absolution, and in the Lord’s Supper, the Holy Spirit uses physical means to deliver the living Christ to helpless sinners. True Sabbath rest is not something you achieve by taking a day off. It is the rest of a quieted conscience, given freely when Christ speaks peace to your soul.

Every morning, long before your feet touch the carpet, a silent tribunal convenes in your mind. It doesn’t use standard courtroom language, but its verdicts are absolute. It evaluates your posture, your patience, your career, your parenting, your civic duty.

Its message is always singular, regardless of the dialect it speaks: You are not enough.

We tend to think of God’s Law as a set of rules written on stone tablets in an ancient desert. But in the actual texture of human life, the Law is simply any word that demands what you cannot produce. It is the relentless tally of what ought to be, pressing hard against what actually is.

And until you understand what this voice is doing to you, you will spend your entire life running on a spiritual treadmill, exhausted, earnest, and completely bound.

The Trap in the Kitchen

Consider an ordinary, quiet disaster of daily life. It is 7:45 AM, breakfast is half-eaten, a glass of milk is pooling on the rug, and your eight-year-old is refusing to put on shoes. Anger flares up in your chest, hot, swift, and sharp. You snap. You raise your voice.

Immediately, the tribunal steps in. A small, stern voice inside says: “I need to be less angry. A decent parent wouldn’t lose their temper over shoes. I need to be better.”

Notice what just happened. That thought, “I need to be less angry,” feels holy. It feels constructive. But it is, in reality, the pure, unvarnished voice of the Law. It exposes your failure and immediately demands a fix.

At this point, you have two choices for how to live:

Path A: The Moral Treadmill

You lean into the voice. You resolve to be better. You buy a book on gentle parenting, you take deep breaths, you count to ten, you try harder. And for two days, it might even work. But by Thursday, the milk spills again, the anger returns, and you realize you are still the exact same impatient person you were on Monday.

Trying to use the Law to cure your anger is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. The Law can diagnose your sickness with terrifying precision, but it possesses zero power to heal you. It leaves you turned inward, obsessing over your own spiritual temperature, constantly asking: “Am I getting less angry yet?”

Path B: The Gospel’s Death and Resurrection

The alternative is not to try harder, but to die to the demand altogether.

You hear the voice that says, “You are an angry parent and you are not enough,” and instead of defending yourself or promising to do better, you say: “That is true. But that voice is no longer my judge.”

You preach the Gospel to yourself. Christ died for angry, failing parents. Your righteousness before God does not hang on your ability to control your blood pressure on a Tuesday morning. You are loved, chosen, and completely forgiven, not because you managed to calm down, but because Christ was enough in your place. You belong to Him. The court is adjourned.

Here is the secret of Christian freedom. When you no longer have to spend your energy trying to justify yourself, you are suddenly free to look at the person in front of you.

As long as you are obsessed with being a less angry parent, your child’s behavior is merely an obstacle to your moral self-improvement. But when the Gospel frees you from the demand to be perfect, you can actually see your child for who they are: a tiny, messy neighbor who lost their shoes and needs help, not your judge. You are freed from the Law for love.

The Same Battle on Every Front

This dynamic isn’t confined to the kitchen table. The Law haunts every arena of human existence, and the Gospel breaks its hold everywhere it touches.

In the Office

The Law says: “You must prove your worth. Your title, your output, and your inbox define your value.” When you fall short, it whispers: “You need to work harder, be more efficient, hustle more.”

The Response: Leaning into this demand makes you an anxious, competitive coworker who sees everyone else as a threat. But the Gospel declares that your identity is completely secure in Christ. You don’t need your job to justify your existence. Suddenly, you can stop using your workplace as an altar to sacrifice yourself on, and start using your work simply to serve your colleagues and clients.

In the Community

The Law says: “You aren’t involved enough. You aren’t hospitality-minded enough. Look at how much better the family down the street manages their lives.”

The Response: Driven by guilt, you sign up for three committees you don’t have time for, secretly harboring resentment toward the very people you’re supposed to be helping. The Gospel frees you from the burden of managing your public reputation. You don’t serve your community to become a good person; you serve because your neighbor is actually hungry, lonely, or in need of a hand.

In Politics

The Law says: “You must save the culture. If you do not care enough, vote correctly enough, or rage loudly enough, everything will fall apart.”

The Response: Political engagement becomes a righteousness contest, a way to prove that you are one of the good ones on the right side of history. The Gospel reminds you that the Lordship of Christ does not hang in the balance of the next election cycle. Freed from apocalyptic panic, you don’t have to view your political opponents as demons who threaten your existence. You can view them as complex, flawed neighbors to be understood, argued with honestly, and loved.

Freedom for the Neighbor

The Law is good, but it can only do one thing: drive you to the end of yourself. It leaves you bankrupt, standing over spilt milk, staring at your own inadequacy.

The Gospel does not come to give you a self-help program so you can satisfy the Law’s demands. It comes to announce that the demand has been met, the debt has been canceled, and the verdict is in. You are free.

You do not need to spend your life trying to prove you are enough. Christ is enough. And because you are His, you can finally put down the mirror, open the front door, and step out into the world, not to save yourself, but simply to love the person standing right in front of you.

The Second Commandment

You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.

What does this mean?

We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

We live in a world obsessed with branding, reputation, and self-expression. We assume that words are simply tools we use to negotiate reality, manage our image, or exert control over others.

When God speaks His name to us, however, He does not hand us a blank check for our religious schemes. He hands us Himself.

The Second Commandment is not merely about avoiding vulgarity or keeping bad language out of polite conversation. It addresses the deep, natural human impulse to capture God’s authority and turn it to our own ends. It confronts our relentless tendency to turn theology into a weapon and prayer into a bargaining chip.

The Mouth Reveals the Heart

In the Large Catechism, Luther points out that the Second Commandment flows directly out of the First. The First Commandment governs the heart; the Second Commandment governs the tongue. As Luther observes:

“As the First Commandment has instructed the heart and taught faith, so this commandment leads us forth and directs the mouth and tongue to God. For the first objects that spring from the heart and manifest themselves are words.”

If you want to know what someone’s god is, listen to how they use speech. When trouble strikes, what name do they invoke? When they want to validate their own opinions, whose authority do they lean on?

The most subtle and dangerous violation of this commandment does not happen in a gutter; it happens in church. It occurs whenever we slap the label “God says” onto our own political agendas, personal preferences, or moral self-congratulation. It happens when we use God’s name to give our own falsehoods the appearance of truth. In the Large Catechism, Luther warns against those who “use the holy name as a cloak for their shame, whether in ordinary business affairs or in high matters of faith and doctrine.”

We want a divine endorsement for our projects. We want God’s name on our side so that our position becomes unassailable. In doing so, we commit the ultimate theft: we attempt to pull God down into our earthly squabbles and force Him to serve as our spokesman.

The Command to Call Upon Him

Yet the Second Commandment is not just a divine prohibition designed to shut our mouths. It contains a radical, unexpected demand.

If the negative side forbids using God’s name for lying, deceiving, or self-justification, the positive side commands us to use it. In fact, Luther makes a startling claim in the Large Catechism: God strictly commands us to pray.

“And the first matter is to know that it is our duty to pray because of God’s commandment. For thus we heard in the Second Commandment... that we are there required to praise that holy name, and call upon it in every need, or to pray. For to call upon the name of God is nothing else than to pray. Prayer is therefore as strictly and earnestly commanded as all other commandments...”

Consider what this means. We often treat prayer as a pious option, a spiritual luxury reserved for the super-religious, or an act of merit that earns us points with God. Luther shatters this illusion. Prayer is not a spiritual work by which you prove your piety; it is a command for beggars.

God does not command you to pray because He needs your adoration or because your pious words impress Him. He commands you to pray because you are in trouble and have nowhere else to go. To refuse to call upon Him in time of need is not humility; it is the arrogant insistence that you can handle life on your own terms. It is breaking the Second Commandment by treating His name as useless.

The Mirror of the Tongue

When the Second Commandment demands that we use God’s name purely to “call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks,” it exposes our complete bankruptcy.

How often do we use God’s name to justify ourselves rather than cry out for mercy? How often do we pray only when we think we are worthy enough, pious enough, or pure enough to be heard?

Luther notes in the Large Catechism how the devil deceives us into thinking: “I am not holy or worthy enough; if I were as godly as St. Peter or St. Paul, then I would pray.” But this is just another form of idolatry! It assumes that God listens to our worthiness rather than honoring His own named promise.

The Law, operating through the Second Commandment, exposes the deceit in our speech and leaves us completely silent. It proves that left to ourselves, we cannot even speak to God rightly.

The Word That Saves

That complete breakdown of our religious talk is where the Gospel actually begins.

The Gospel is not a new set of rules on how to speak properly or how to construct a better prayer life. It is the announcement of a divine event. When God revealed His name in Jesus Christ, He did not come to be used as a political badge or a moral weapon. He came as unconditional mercy.

When Jesus came speaking God’s true Word and bestowing free forgiveness, we could not tolerate it. We took God’s name, accused Jesus of blasphemy in that very name, and nailed Him to a cross. The cross exposes our misuse of God’s name at its absolute worst: we used divine authority to murder God Himself.

Yet right there, in our murder of Him, God gets the last word. In the resurrection of Jesus Christ, God does not strike us dead for our blasphemy and misuses of His name. Instead, He uses that very name to announce unconditional pardon to the killers.

God does not wait for you to fix your speech, clean up your motives, or construct perfect prayers before He listens to you. In the Word, in Baptism, and in the Lord’s Supper, He places His name directly upon you, completely apart from your merit or worthiness.

The Gospel gives you the name of God not as a law you must satisfy, but as an absolute refuge. You no longer have to use God’s name to justify your actions or build your reputation, because Christ has already given you His own righteous standing. The God who commands you to call upon Him is the very same God who has bound His name to a promise: that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

There are moments when the world begins to feel less like reality and more like the opening scenes of a 1990s science-fiction movie. We see artificial intelligence accelerating, autonomous military drones deploying, and swarms of weapons capable of identifying and destroying targets with minimal human intervention. Meanwhile, License Plate Recognition (LPR) systems like Flock Safety cameras expand surveillance networks across thousands of neighborhood associations and police departments, alongside rapid developments in humanoid robotics. Machines are learning to imitate, replace, and perhaps eventually outthink their creators.

The unsettling realization is how eerily familiar this all sounds. We watched these scenarios unfold in cinema and read about them in classic dystopian literature. We imagined societies where technology became the master rather than the servant, where constant surveillance was normalized, and where automated systems were granted authority over human life. We called it fiction, yet we are now watching these elements unfold in real time.

Driven by the Bottom Line

The strangest aspect of this shift is that it is not primarily driven by a fictional villain bent on global destruction. It is propelled by market forces: profit margins, geopolitical competition, market share, military superiority, and corporate efficiency. The primary catalyst is the existential fear of being left behind by competitors or nation-state rivals. Everyone is racing because no one wants to concede the advantage.

In this rush toward optimization, a fundamental question is frequently bypassed: just because we have the engineering capability to build something, does that mean we should?

Yet the most disturbing variable in this equation is not the machinery itself; it is the nature of the human creators. Technology does not generate our deepest psychological and moral deficiencies, it merely equips those ancient tendencies with vastly more powerful instruments. Human beings have harbored an impulse toward total sovereignty since antiquity. We seek absolute control, ultimate security, and the complete elimination of uncertainty, weakness, and mortality.

The Failure of Technical Solutions for Moral Problems

This impulse mirrors the historic narrative of the Tower of Babel: an attempt to construct a system large, intelligent, and secure enough to render humanity invincible. The paradox remains that as technological capability increases, so does the capacity for systemic self-destruction.

Humanity possesses remarkable technical capabilities, yet struggles with self-governance. We can place high-resolution cameras on every corner, yet we fail to confront internal corruption. We design neural networks that process petabytes of data faster than any organic brain, yet we remain captive to material greed. We engineer precision weaponry capable of wiping out urban centers, yet we fail at basic conflict resolution with our neighbors. We assemble humanoid machines, yet we struggle to understand how to live well as human beings. No technological breakthrough can resolve a moral dilemma, because the fundamental challenge of the human condition is not an infrastructure deficiency, it is a moral one.

A Hope Beyond the Machine

This reality is why the Gospel presents a different perspective than technological utopianism. Christian theology does not promise that humanity will invent its way out of mortality through bio-engineering or artificial general intelligence. Instead, it claims that God has entered a broken world. Rather than offering abstract instructions to build a utopian future, Jesus Christ enters directly into the historical human experience, into its violence, greed, fear, and ambition.

According to the Biblical narrative, human civilization responded to its Creator by crucifying Him. Yet, the Resurrection asserts that death and destruction do not hold the final authority. Our long-term hope is not rooted in artificial intelligence, government policy, military deterrence, surveillance networks, or human self-improvement.

Even if civilization creates systems that threaten its own existence, technical dominance is not the ultimate reality. Greed, technological overreach, and human error do not have the final word. In Revelation 21:5, the text promises, “Behold, I make all things new.”

The appropriate response to a complex and rapidly shifting technological landscape is neither blind optimism nor reactionary panic. It requires clear-eyed evaluation and faith. The trajectory of human history does not rest entirely in the hands of the engineers and institutions building these systems; it rests in the hands of the One who stands over history itself. That offers a far more grounded resolution than anything Hollywood has produced.

The First Commandment

You shall have no other gods.

What does this mean?

We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

The Ten Commandments are not a set of moral guidelines designed to help you build a better, more spiritual version of yourself. They are not a self-improvement program, nor are they a ladder by which you can climb up to heaven.

They begin, as they must, by putting an end to you.

When Luther takes up the First Commandment in the Small Catechism, he does not give us a list of duties to perform. He goes straight for the heart. “We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.” With those eleven words, the entire human enterprise of self-justification is brought to a screeching halt. The Commandment does not ask whether you go to church, whether you pay your taxes, or whether you avoid the obvious vices. It asks a far more radical, far more terrifying question: Where do you actually place your ultimate trust when the ground beneath your feet starts to give way?

The Idol Factory

To understand what is happening here, we have to look at how Luther expands on this in the Large Catechism. There, he cuts through all our religious pretense and defines a “god” in terms that leave no room for escape:

“A god is that on which we are to look for all good and in which we are to find refuge in all need. Therefore, to have a god is nothing else than to trust and believe in something from the heart...Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your god.”

Notice what this does. A “god” is not merely a supreme being residing somewhere in the clouds; a god is whatever functions as your ultimate security, your ultimate source of worth, and your ultimate refuge when trouble strikes.

You do not need to build a golden calf in your living room to break the First Commandment. You do it every time you place your confidence in your bank account, your career, your political party, your health, your reputation, or even your own morality.

In the Large Catechism, Luther singles out the most common idols of human existence. He points to Mammon, which is wealth and property, as the most common god on earth:

“Many a person thinks that he has God and everything in abundance when he has money and property; he trusts in them and boasts of them so stubbornly and securely that he cares for no one. Look, such a person also has a god, Mammon by name, that is, wealth and money, on which he sets his whole heart. This is the most common idol on earth.”

But it isn’t just money. For others, it is power, prestige, or human learning. And for the religious, the idol is often their own pious works, specifically their ability to feel good about their own spiritual condition. We want a god we can manage, a god who owes us something because of our devotion, a god who leaves us in the driver’s seat.

The Law as Diagnostic

This is why the First Commandment stands at the absolute head of the Law. If you get the First Commandment right, you keep all the others. If you break the First Commandment, every good work you attempt to perform under the remaining nine is corrupted at the root.

When Luther demands that we “fear, love, and trust in God above all things,” he is setting a standard that no human heart can naturally fulfill. We naturally fear the loss of our possessions more than we fear God. We naturally love our own comfort more than we love God. We naturally trust our own efforts more than we trust God’s promises.

The First Commandment, then, acts as a mirror that shatters our illusions of self-sufficiency. It exposes the fact that we are born idolaters. It does not invite us to try harder; it unmasks our utter inability to secure our own lives.

From Fear to Trust

The Large Catechism reminds us that God will not share His glory with these manufactured idols. He demands the whole heart, not a negotiated share of it:

“If the heart is so disposed that it expects nothing but good from God, especially in need and distress, and furthermore turns aside and parts with everything that is not God, then it has the only true God.”

Where does such faith come from? It cannot be produced by the willpower of an idol-maker. You cannot simply command yourself to “trust God” when your heart is terrified of losing its false securities.

True trust in God only arises when our false gods are destroyed, when the Law exposes their emptiness and leaves us with nowhere else to turn. It happens when we stop trying to justify ourselves and are forced to rely entirely on the God who justifies the ungodly.

The Word That Saves

This is precisely where the First Commandment drives us out of ourselves and into the Gospel.

The Gospel is not a new program for how to put God first, nor is it a theory about how Jesus fulfilled a legal checklist on your behalf. It is the announcement of a divine event. When Jesus came doing what the First Commandment demands, actually bestowing God’s unconditional mercy, we killed Him for it. The cross exposes our idolatry at its absolute worst: we would rather murder God than surrender our self-justification.

Yet right there, in our murder of Him, God gets the last word. In the resurrection of Jesus Christ, God does not exact payment; He simply up and forgives the very ones who killed Him. The Gospel is the news that your idolatry has been put to death on the cross, not because a legal debt was calculated, but because God’s unearned mercy has broken through your defenses.

God does not wait for you to smash your own idols or clean up your heart. In the Word, in Baptism, and in the Supper, He comes down to do what you cannot do: He ends the old idolater and creates a new creature out of nothing. You no longer have to trust in your wealth, your status, or your moral performance, because Christ has already delivered God to you unconditionally.

When a public figure like Dr. Anthony Fauci sits before a congressional committee and invokes the Fifth Amendment, the reaction is predictable. A constitutional right designed as a shield against self-incrimination becomes, in the popular imagination, a confession of guilt. To “plead the Fifth” is to step out of the light of accountability, to assert a right to silence precisely when the public demands a reckoning.

We watch this political drama with a comfortable sense of distance. We point the finger, demand transparency, and congratulate ourselves on being the sort of upright citizens who have nothing to hide.

But what if the courtroom isn’t in Washington, D.C.? What if the law in question isn’t the U.S. Constitution, but the Law of God, specifically, the Fifth Commandment?

The Illusion of Innocence

In our day-to-day existence, we operate under a convenient, self-justifying lie. We look at the Fifth Commandment (You shall not murder) and immediately give ourselves a clean bill of health.

“Well,” we say, brushing our hands off, “I haven’t pulled a trigger today. I haven’t poisoned anyone’s coffee. I am innocent.”

We treat God’s law like a criminal statute. As long as we haven’t crossed the line into literal homicide, we consider the matter closed. We stand before the divine tribunal, puff out our chests, and declare ourselves righteous

The Fifth Commandment You shall not murder.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.

Look closely at what happens in the Catechism’s explanation. The Law doesn’t merely forbid pulling a trigger; it demands active, sacrificial care for the life of your neighbor. The Law does not ask, “Did you manage to avoid killing them?” It asks, “Did you help and support them in every physical need?”

Jesus Tightens the Noose

If we think we can slip out of the courtroom on a technicality, Jesus shuts the door entirely in the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 5, He takes the Fifth Commandment and strips away every last shred of our self-righteousness.

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'You shall not murder'... But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.”

Jesus makes it clear: anger is murder in the heart. Contempt is violence. Withholding aid from a neighbor in need is, in the eyes of God, a form of quiet, respectable execution.

When Jesus opens up the true intent of the Fifth Commandment, our neat defense collapses. Under His gaze, we are exposed not as innocent bystanders, but as habitual, quiet transgressors. We kill with our cold shoulders, our sharp tongues, our indifference, and our refusal to step in when a neighbor suffers.

The Ultimate Silence

So what happens when we stand before this law?

We try to plead our own version of the Fifth. We offer excuses:

• “I was tired.”

• “They deserved it.”

• “It wasn’t my job to help.”

But the Law of God doesn’t allow for evasive maneuvers. It shuts our mouths completely. Before the radical demands of the Fifth Commandment, as radicalized by Jesus, we are driven to absolute, humble silence. Every mouth is stopped, and the whole world is held accountable to God.

Pleading the Fifth in court is a legal maneuver to save yourself from prison. But standing silent before the Fifth Commandment is the only place where grace can actually reach you.

When the Law finally puts an end to your self-justification, you stop playing the lawyer. You drop the defenses. And it is precisely in that silence, when you have nothing left to plead, that another voice speaks for you, declaring a righteousness that you could never earn, given freely at the Cross.

The altar is not a stage where we act out a religious memory. It is not a place where we gather our thoughts, summon our devotion, and try to reach upward toward a distant God. The Lord’s Supper begins somewhere else entirely.

It begins with Christ.

The Christian faith is always a response to something God has already done. We do not create the Gospel by our sincerity, our feelings, or our spiritual effort. The Gospel comes to us from outside of us. It is spoken. It is given. It is placed into our hands and upon our lips.

This is why the Lord’s Supper is such a profound mystery. God does not wait for us to find Him. He comes looking for us. The One who took on flesh in the womb of Mary continues to come to His people through humble, earthly things. The same Lord who entered our world in weakness, who suffered under Pontius Pilate, who was nailed to the cross, and who rose from the dead now comes hidden beneath bread and wine.

The Infinite gives Himself through the finite.

The bread remains bread. The wine remains wine. Yet by the promise of Christ, His true Body and Blood are truly and actually given to His people “in, with, and under the bread and wine”, for the forgiveness of sins. The same Body that hung upon the cross and the same Blood poured out for the life of the world are given here, not as an idea to contemplate, but as a gift to receive.

This is the confession of the Sacramental Union. It is not a theory invented to make the Sacrament more mysterious. It is simply the Church taking Jesus seriously when He says, “This is My Body” and “This is My Blood.” (Matthew 26:26–29, Mark 14:22–25, Luke 22:19–20)

The question is never, “How can this happen?” The question is, “Has Christ promised it?” And where Christ has spoken, faith rests.

The Presence of Christ and the Response of Faith

Because Christ is present, the Sacrament cannot be treated casually. But our reverence must always begin with Christ’s gift, not our actions.

There is a temptation in every age to turn the things of God into things we do for God. Even something as beautiful as reverence can become a burden if we imagine that our carefulness makes the Sacrament holy. It does not.

Christ makes the Sacrament holy.

Our reverence is not an attempt to persuade God to come near. He has already come near. Our reverence is the response of faith that recognizes what God has already done.

The Lutheran Confessions speak clearly:

“However, no one, unless he is an Arian heretic, can and will deny that Christ Himself, true God and man, is truly and essentially present in the Supper. Christ should be adored in spirit and in truth in the true use of the Sacrament, as He is in all other places, especially where His congregation is assembled.”

Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration VII:15

The confession is simple: where Christ gives Himself, Christ is to be honored.

We do not worship bread and wine as though they were gods. We worship the Christ who comes to us through these means. We do not bow because we are afraid that God might reject us if we fail to perform the right action. We bow because God has already humbled Himself for us.

The God who could have remained distant chose instead to come near.

The God whom heaven cannot contain chooses to place Himself into the hands of sinners.

“O God, Help!”: Luther and the Spilled Chalice

This confession of Christ’s presence also shaped the way Martin Luther approached the Sacrament.

A well-known account preserved by Johann Hachenburg describes an incident in Wittenberg in 1542:

“[In 1542, in Wittenberg] a woman wanted to go to the Lord’s Supper, and then as she was about to kneel on the bench before the altar and drink, she made a misstep and jostled the chalice of the Lord violently with her mouth, so that some of the Blood of Christ was spilled from it onto her lined jacket and coat and onto the rail of the bench on which she was kneeling. So then when the reverend Doctor Luther, who was standing at a bench opposite, saw this, he quickly ran to the altar (as did also the reverend Doctor Bugenhagen), and together with the curate, with all reverence licked up the Blood of Christ from the rail and helped wipe off this spilled Blood of Christ from the woman’s coat as well as they could. And Doctor Luther took this catastrophe so seriously that he groaned over it and said, ‘O, God, help!’ and his eyes were full of water.”

Some may hear this story and think Luther was being excessive. But Luther’s concern was not about preserving a religious object. His concern was Christ.

Luther believed the words of Jesus. “This is My Blood.”

The issue was not that something sacred had been damaged because humans had failed to handle it perfectly. The issue was that Christ had given Himself in love, and Luther did not want that gift treated as ordinary.

Yet notice also Luther’s pastoral heart. The woman was not condemned. She was not pushed away. She had not committed some terrible offense. She had stumbled.

And Luther, who knew the depth of human weakness, responded with compassion. He cared for the Sacrament and he cared for the sinner who had come seeking Christ.

That is always the pattern of the Gospel. Christ does not come to crush sinners but to give Himself for them.

Receiving the Gift

How we approach the Sacrament reveals what we believe about the One who gives it.

If the Lord’s Supper is merely a symbol, then there is no reason for particular care. But if Christ is truly giving Himself, then faith naturally receives His gift with humility and thanksgiving.

When we receive the Host in our hands, we receive carefully, consuming it fully and taking care that visible fragments are not treated carelessly. We do this not because our actions preserve Christ’s presence, but because faith honors the gift it has received.

When we receive the chalice, we do so with attention and gratitude. Whether using a common chalice or individual cups, we remember that this is not an ordinary drink. Christ has attached His promise to it.

The goal is not anxiety. The goal is thanksgiving.

The Christian does not come to the altar wondering, “Have I done enough?” The Christian comes hearing Christ say, “For you.”

The Remaining Elements

The Church has also historically cared for the remaining consecrated elements, often called the reliquiae.

This practice flows from the same confession. If Christ has truly given His Body and Blood according to His promise, then what remains after the distribution is not treated as ordinary bread and wine.

The Lutheran Confessions do not establish one single method for handling the remaining elements, but they do establish the principle that Christ’s gifts are not handled thoughtlessly.

Historically, Lutheran churches have reverently consumed the remaining elements or reserved them for the communion of those who cannot be present at the Divine Service, especially the sick and shut-in.

Reservation is not an attempt to create a separate devotion apart from the Sacrament’s purpose. It serves the same Gospel purpose: bringing Christ’s promised forgiveness to those who need His comfort.

The vessels, linens, and other items used in the distribution of the Sacrament are likewise treated with care, not because human actions make Christ more present, but because faith recognizes the value of what Christ has given.

The Gift Remains the Gift

The greatest danger in discussing reverence is that we might accidentally shift our eyes away from Christ and toward ourselves.

The point of the Sacrament is not that we become impressive worshipers. The point is that Christ comes for sinners.

The woman in Wittenberg did not need a lecture. She needed mercy. Luther understood that. His tears were not tears of anger toward a careless communicant. They were tears of love for the Savior who had drawn so near.

That is why the Church cares for the Sacrament.

Not because we are trying to protect something fragile that depends on us.

But because we have been given something precious that comes entirely from Christ.

Every bow of the head, every careful movement at the rail, every reverent cleansing of the vessels, and every careful handling of the reliquiae, whether they are reverently consumed or reserved for the communion of the sick and shut-in, is simply faith taking Christ at His Word.

These actions do not create His presence.

They confess it.

At the altar, Christ does not ask us to climb up to Him. He comes down to us.

He comes to forgive.

He comes to give life.

He comes to place His mercy into the hands and mouths of sinners.

And because the Lord Himself is the One who comes, we approach His altar not with fear that we have failed, but with the confidence of faith:

Christ is here. Christ is for us. Christ gives Himself for us.

Walk through almost any American town and you will find churches everywhere.

Some gather beneath stained glass windows that have stood for generations. Others meet in warehouses, schools, or renovated storefronts. Some worship with candles and incense. Others with guitars and projection screens. Some belong to ancient communions. Others were planted only a few years ago. Their buildings look different. Their worship sounds different. Their leadership is organized differently.

Yet they all make the same claim. They are the Church.

That raises a question most of us rarely stop to ask. What exactly is the Church?

We often assume we already know the answer. The Church is where Christians gather. The Church is a community of believers. The Church is people who love Jesus. The Church is an institution with a particular history or structure. Depending on our background, we may add apostolic succession, denominational identity, worship style, or doctrinal precision to the list.

The Lutheran Reformers, however, answered the question in a way that is at once remarkably simple and deeply unsettling.

Article VII of the Augsburg Confession says:

“Also they teach that one holy Church is to continue forever. The Church is the congregation of saints, in which the Gospel is rightly taught and the Sacraments are rightly administered.”

The statement is so brief that it is easy to read past it. Yet it quietly overturns many of our assumptions about what the Church is and where it is found.

We Keep Looking at Ourselves

Human beings have a remarkable ability to make everything about themselves, even the Church.

We look at attendance. We measure influence. We count members. We admire beautiful buildings, impressive ministries, dynamic preaching, or centuries of tradition. We compare denominations. We argue about governance. We ask whether a church is growing, whether it is relevant, whether it is successful.

None of those questions is entirely unimportant. They simply are not the first question. The Augsburg Confession begins somewhere else entirely.

It begins with Christ.

That is easy to miss because we are so accustomed to thinking of the Church as something we establish, maintain, defend, or improve. We speak naturally about “building the Church,” as though the Church were finally our project.

But the Church is not our project. It is Christ’s.

The Church exists because Jesus Christ refuses to stop giving Himself to sinners.

Everything else is secondary.

The Church Is Not Built. It Is Created.

This is perhaps the most overlooked truth in Article VII.

The Church is not something human beings organize into existence. We can establish congregations. We can draft constitutions. We can construct buildings. We can elect officers. We can develop strategic plans.

None of those things creates the Church. Only Christ creates His Church, and He does so in the same way He has always created life, He speaks.

That is why the Confession begins with the Gospel.

The Church does not first exist because people believe. Rather, people believe because the Gospel creates faith. Before there is faith, there is Christ speaking. Before there is a congregation, there is a promise.

The Church is not the cause of the Gospel.

The Gospel is the cause of the Church.

That distinction changes everything.

Too often we imagine the Church as a gathering of people trying to follow Jesus. The Confession reverses the picture. The Church is the gathering of people whom Jesus Himself has gathered through His own gifts.

The difference is enormous. One places the emphasis on what we are doing while the other places the emphasis on what Christ is doing.

Why the Gospel Comes First

Article VII does not merely mention the Gospel. It says the Church is where the Gospel is rightly taught.

That little phrase deserves careful attention.

The Gospel is not simply information about Jesus. It is not moral instruction, nor is it practical advice for successful living, and it is not encouragement to become a better disciple.

The Gospel is God’s own declaration that Christ has accomplished everything necessary for the salvation of sinners. He has taken our sin into His own death. He has borne the Father’s judgment. He has been raised for our justification. Now He gives forgiveness, life, and salvation freely through His promise.

The Law tells us what God requires.

The Gospel tells us what Christ has already accomplished.

Those two words must never be confused.

Whenever preaching slowly shifts its center from Christ’s finished work to our ongoing performance, something precious has been lost. The focus turns inward. People begin measuring themselves instead of resting in Christ. Assurance gives way to anxiety because the burden has quietly shifted back onto human shoulders.

The Church lives by hearing good news that comes from outside of us. This is not some recent discovery. It has always been that way.

The Sacraments Are Not Additions to the Gospel

The Confession immediately joins the Sacraments to the Gospel because the two belong together.

The Reformers never treated Baptism and the Lord’s Supper as optional symbols or devotional exercises. The Sacraments are the Gospel in visible form.

In Baptism, Christ places His promise upon a sinner through ordinary water.

In Holy Communion, Christ gives His own body and blood for the forgiveness of sins.

In Absolution, Christ speaks forgiveness through human lips into guilty ears.

None of these are primarily our acts toward God. They are God’s acts toward us.

That is why the Church is recognized by these gifts. Christ is still doing exactly what He promised He would do.

He is still speaking.

He is still washing.

He is still feeding.

He is still forgiving.

What Does “Rightly Taught” Mean?

At this point another question naturally arises. Does “rightly taught” mean a church must possess perfect theology before it can be considered a true church? The Lutheran Reformers never argued that.

Every congregation has weaknesses. Every pastor has blind spots, and every Christian continues learning throughout this life. The issue is not perfection. The issue is the center.

Does the preaching actually deliver Christ to sinners? Does it distinguish Law and Gospel? Does it announce forgiveness as God’s free gift instead of a reward for spiritual progress? Does it leave broken consciences trusting Christ rather than themselves?

These are not academic questions. They are the difference between comfort and despair. A church may have beautiful worship, rich traditions, excellent programs, and faithful people. Yet if Christ’s promise is no longer the center of its proclamation, something essential has begun to disappear.

What About Churches That Do Not Fit This Description?

This is where many Lutherans may become uneasy. If the Church is defined by the pure preaching of the Gospel and the right administration of the Sacraments, what are we supposed to think about churches that do not possess these marks?

Notice first what Article VII is not saying. It is not giving us permission to determine who is and is not saved. God alone knows the heart.

The Lutheran Confessions never claim that every believer belongs to a confessional Lutheran congregation. Christians may be found wherever the Holy Spirit has created faith in Christ. God’s Word is powerful, and He is not limited by our theological shortcomings.

But that is not the question Article VII asks. It asks how the Church is recognized. Those are not the same question.

A person may genuinely trust Christ while belonging to a church that teaches serious errors. God’s mercy is greater than our imperfect understanding. At the same time, it does not follow that every body calling itself a church is equally faithful to Christ’s institution.

The Confession gives us objective marks precisely so that we do not have to guess. Where the Gospel is rightly taught and the Sacraments rightly administered according to Christ’s institution, there Christ has promised to be present for sinners.

Those marks do not tell us everything about every individual soul. They do tell us where Christ has promised His gifts. That distinction allows Lutherans to speak both honestly and humbly.

We need not deny the existence of Christians outside our fellowship. Neither must we pretend that doctrinal differences are insignificant. Love does not require pretending that truth does not matter.

Before We Judge Anyone Else

Perhaps the most uncomfortable implication of Article VII is that it turns its gaze upon Lutherans themselves.

Having “Lutheran” on the sign proves nothing. Owning the Book of Concord proves nothing. Using historic liturgy proves nothing. Even orthodox confessions, if they become badges of self-congratulation, cannot create the Church.

The question remains exactly the same. Is Christ still being given to sinners? Is forgiveness still the heartbeat of the preaching? Are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper still received as Christ’s own gifts rather than human testimonies?

If the answer becomes no, then even a congregation with impeccable Lutheran credentials has forgotten what made it the Church in the first place.

The Church is never preserved by its own correctness. It is preserved by Christ.

The Comfort of Article VII

At first glance, Article VII seems restrictive because it defines the Church so carefully. In reality, it is profoundly comforting.

If the Church depended upon our holiness, there would be no Church. If it depended upon wise leaders, history would have buried it long ago. If it depended upon flawless doctrine, perfect pastors, or faithful members, every congregation would eventually collapse under the weight of human failure.

Instead, the Church continues because Christ continues. He continues speaking forgiveness into guilty consciences. He continues washing sinners in Baptism. He continues placing His own body and blood into empty hands. He continues gathering His people through promises that cannot fail.

The Church endures because Jesus Christ is faithful to His own Word. That is the quiet confidence of the Augsburg Confession.

The Church is not ultimately identified by her architecture, her traditions, her influence, her programs, her size, or even her denominational name. She is identified by the living Christ who still comes to sinners through His Gospel and His Sacraments.

Where He is giving those gifts, there the Church is. And where the Church is, Christ is still doing what He has always done. He is raising the dead by forgiving sinners.

That is the Church’s life.

That is her confidence.

And that is why, despite every failure, division, scandal, and weakness that marks her earthly pilgrimage, the one holy Church will continue forever. Christ Himself has promised it, and He remains faithful to His promise.

The Language of Control

We give administrative titles to ugly things on the ground because it makes them easier to digest.

When excavators pile up massive dirt mounds across flattened towns, cut off family land, and shoot anyone who strays too close, we call it a buffer zone. When a military draws a vague line on a map and kills civilians who had no idea they were standing on it, the official phrase becomes “threat mitigation.”

Satellite imagery brought to light this week confirms what folks living in Gaza already knew. Miles of earthen walls now run straight through the gut of the territory. It is a physical line of dirt and rubble, built day by day over destroyed homes, cleared groves, and leveled neighborhoods.

On one side, over two million people are jammed into coastal tent camps, getting by on whatever aid trickles through. On the other side, heavy machinery and explosives have wiped communities like Rafah right off the map, all to clear space for military supply roads and outposts.

A Border Made of Dirt

The official reasoning never changes. It is always self-defense.

The military claims these berms exist to block infiltration and protect nearby towns. They label it a security zone, complete with high-tech sensors and observation towers. When soldiers open fire on people stepping toward the dirt mounds, official statements simply claim troops were neutralizing an imminent threat.

This is the ancient, exhausting logic of self-justification. Power never admits to taking land. It claims to manage risk. It never admits to displacing families. It just establishes temporary boundaries for public order.

Humanity has always operated under this relentless law of self-preservation. It is a system where we attempt to construct our own righteousness out of raw fear, believing that if we can just control the boundary tightly enough, we can save ourselves. But any law built strictly on self-defense only ever demands more blood to maintain its promises. It promises safety, yet it delivers nothing but a continuous, crushing demand for more control, more power, and more destruction.

If we want to speak with any degree of honesty, we have to strip off the PR filter and call it what it is.

The so-called yellow line was never going to be temporary. You do not build twenty-foot dirt walls across a tiny, overcrowded strip of land because you are waiting for diplomats to sign a deal. You build them to mark a permanent border. When you flatten everything east of that line and instruct troops to shoot anything that moves, you have not built a defensive barrier.

You have built a kill zone.

The Machinery of Self-Justification

The real tragedy of operating under the banner of absolute security is how effortlessly it absolves itself.

The moment a state decides its safety requires total control over another group of people, every act of violence becomes morally tidy. Knocking down an entire town gets translated into clearing hostile infrastructure. Shooting a child who could not see an unmarked dirt ridge through the dust gets written off as a routine rules-of-engagement issue.

Look closely at how this self-righteous engine works. It demands that we focus on protocols, perimeter rules, and tactical needs while ignoring the trail of dead bodies in the sand. It expects us to play along with the idea that a temporary ceasefire line is not actively hardening into a permanent seizure of land.

This law of power exposes our deepest bankruptcy. Left to ourselves, our best attempts at securing our own lives only bring death to our neighbors. The law leaves us completely exposed. It strips away our noble excuses until we are left standing in the rubble of our own making, unable to justify a single shovel of dirt.

Calling a Thing What It Is

People cannot survive on political jargon, nor can they survive on an endless cycle of self-justification. Reality eventually tears through the spin anyway.

To see Gaza for what it is right now, we have to stop adopting the language of military administrators. A wall of dirt was raised through someone else’s home. The ruins behind it were claimed as a permanent safety prize. Soldiers were given green lights to shoot anyone looking back.

If the final word in the dirt is judgment and death, true hope cannot come from drawing better lines, negotiating cleaner protocols, or managing the machinery of control. Hope only enters when the entire project of self-preservation is broken open.

Real life, the kind that political diplomacy can never engineer, arrives only as pure, unearned grace. It is a word from outside our walls that speaks peace to those trapped on both sides of the berm. It is a promise that does not ask for perimeter defenses or tactical justification. Instead, it breaks down the dividing walls we build and gives life to those whom our systems have declared dead. Until we stop trusting in our ability to save ourselves behind walls of dirt, we will remain trapped in the very kill zones we built to keep us safe.

It is a persistent temptation of the political estate to believe that if we just construct the right bureau, we can manufacture a more righteous world. We look at real, aching human problems, such as bullying, marginalization, and the bitter sting of exclusion, and our immediate impulse is to reach for the machinery of state power. We want to legislate equity into existence.

But when the state attempts to solve the problems of the human heart by creating preferred categories under the law, it inevitably compromises the very justice it seeks to establish.

Consider what is currently advancing through the committees of the Massachusetts legislature. Bill S.2134, titled "An Act Promoting the Civil Rights and Inclusion of American Muslims in the Commonwealth," proposes the creation of a permanent, 11-member government commission focused exclusively on the status and issues of people who practice Islam.

This is not a temporary task force or a brief exploratory committee. It is designed as a permanent fixture of state government. On the surface, the rhetoric surrounding it is entirely predictable and well-meaning: it is framed as a civil rights measure to address discrimination and foster civic inclusion. But beneath the pious language lies a profound and dangerous departure from the principle of legal neutrality.

The Machinery of Preferential Status

We must look clearly at what this bill actually constructs. This is not merely a symbolic gesture; it is a body endowed with real administrative weight and institutional power.

According to the text of the legislation, the 11 commissioners would be appointed by the highest echelons of state government: the Governor, the Attorney General, and legislative leadership. Once established, this commission would possess a suite of powers that sets it apart as a unique entity:

The Power of Policy Recommendation: It is mandated to report directly to the governor and legislature, recommending specific policy and legislative changes.

The Power of Public Resources: It is authorized to hire a paid executive director and a full staff, establishing a permanent state-funded footprint.

Instead, it enters the business of dispensing institutional favor.

The Illusion of State-Manufactured Righteousness

The structural flaw here is deep. The state is uniquely equipped to do one thing: enforce a baseline of outward justice. It must protect citizens from violence, fraud, and overt discrimination. When government creates a permanent commission for one specific faith, it effectively signals that some citizens possess a greater claim to the state's attention and resources based on their religious identity.

Supporters argue that this is necessary because the Muslim community faces unique challenges like Islamophobia. That may well be true. But the moment the state creates a distinct, permanent bureaucratic answer for one group, it violates the core tenet of equal protection. If a government body is necessary to monitor the status of one faith, on what logical basis can it be denied to every other faith? The end of this road is not a more unified society; it is a fractured tribalism where every religious and cultural group must lobby for its own matching piece of the state machinery.

Justice is Blind, Not Particular

There is a profound difference between a church, a mosque, or a temple, and the state house. The religious community is the realm of explicit confession, of specific grace, and of voluntary devotion. The state is the realm of law, of coercion, and of absolute equity.

When we mix these two, when we try to use the coercive, bureaucratic tools of the state to manage the social status of a specific religious confession, we corrupt both. The state loses its blindness, and religion loses its independence.

If Massachusetts Democrats continue to push Bill S.2134 through the Ways and Means committee without rigorous, public pushback, they will establish a precedent that undermines the very foundation of religious equality. True civil rights do not require the creation of specialized government bodies. They require the absolute, unyielding application of equal laws to every single individual, regardless of how they worship.

The proposal in Massachusetts deserves full, unblinking public scrutiny. We must remind our legislators that the state is at its best when it remains a neutral guardian of freedom, rather than an architect of spiritual favoritism.

We are remarkably busy people. We spend our days arranging the deck chairs of our modern anxieties, checking our feeds for the latest reports from the eastern borders of Poland, the tense rhetoric passing between Israel and Turkey, or the slow, exhausting grind of conflict in Iran that refuses to stay within its geopolitical banks. We watch the slow-motion evaporation of the church in Western Europe, noting the empty pews not with grief, but with the cool, sociological detachment of people who think they have outgrown the need for an altar.

Further south, we receive horrifying reports of systemic slaughter, where thousands of Christians in Nigeria are targeted and killed by extremist militias, their villages burned in a quiet, modern martyrdom. This violence is repeated in various corners of the globe under different names and regimes, reminding us of the cheapness of human life when power is at stake.

At the very same time, we look to the horizon of our own ingenuity and tremble. The sudden, vertical rise of artificial superintelligence has introduced a new brand of existential dread. We read warnings of machines that may soon out-think their creators, rendering human cognitive labor obsolete and threatening the very survival of our species. We worry about the loss of control, terrified of an artificial mind that might stop behaving like a tool and begin pursuing its own inscrutable goals. We look to the skies as unexplained aerial phenomena are debated in the halls of government, and we look to our screens where the digital golems we built threaten to displace us entirely.

We look at this mounting heap of instability, this terrifying display of human vulnerability, and we find ourselves gripped by a subterranean panic. Yet, we refuse to name its true source. We ask ourselves, in quiet moments, if the ground beneath us is finally giving way.

We wonder if we should be gripped by terror. But the trouble is that we are asking the wrong question.

The Myth of Control

When we look at a world spinning out of our grasp, our immediate instinct is to look for a handle. We want to know if we can manage the risk. We treat God, if we treat Him at all, as a sort of celestial insurance broker, or perhaps a cosmic therapist whose primary job is to assure us that everything is going to be fine, that we are basically good, and that the progress of history is still marching upward.

This is the great romantic dream of what Martin Luther called the theology of glory. It is the belief that if we just analyze the political landscape correctly, if we just reform the church’s programs to appeal to the modern mind, if we draft the right international treaties, or if we build the perfect safety guardrails for our superintelligent machines, we can remain the masters of our own destiny. We want a theology, and a technology, that leaves our sovereignty intact. We want to look at the edge of the abyss and ask how we might manage the fall.

But the cross of Jesus Christ does not permit us the luxury of such management.

The cross is not a helpful tip for self-improvement; it is an execution. It is the end of our schemes. When the Apostle Paul writes that the preaching of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, he means that it utterly destroys our attempts to negotiate with reality. The cross does not come to make us feel secure in our current projects. It comes to put our illusions of control to death so that we might finally be made alive by a grace we did not bargain for and cannot command.

The Silent Martyrdom and the Dying Church

Look at the decline of the church in the West. We treat it as a public relations disaster to be solved by clever marketing, or we lament it as the loss of a cultural hegemony we were never promised in the first place. But perhaps the death of Christendom is not a tragedy to be averted, but the mercy of God stripping away our false assurances. The church was never meant to be a bulwark of respectable culture or a guarantor of Western civilization. It is the gathering of those who have been slain by the Law and raised by the Promise. When we try to save the church by our own strength, we only prove that we do not believe in the resurrection. We want a living church, but we are terrified of the death that must precede it.

This same avoidance of death distorts how we look at the global suffering of our brothers and sisters. When we hear of the severe persecution of Christians in Nigeria, of believers hunted in Middle Belt villages or forced to worship in hiding, we tend to process it through the lens of geopolitics or human rights activism. We treat it as a problem to be solved by better governance or international pressure. While justice must be pursued, we must also face a harder truth: the suffering church is not a theological anomaly. It is the church matching the form of its crucified Lord.

The Threat of the Silicon Golem

We apply this same frantic, self-justifying energy to our fears of superintelligence. We are terrified of AI because it threatens to do to us what we have long tried to do to God: render us obsolete, inspect our lives with algorithmic coldness, and strip us of our status as the sovereign rulers of this world. We fear being managed by a machine intelligence because deep down, we know how ruthlessly we have managed the rest of creation for our own utility.

Our panic over technology is ultimately a secularized confession of our own powerlessness. We built these machines to save us from labor, to give us infinite knowledge, and to secure our future. Now, we realize they may simply swallow us. We wanted to play the creator, and we are horrified to find that our creations are just as fallen, volatile, and indifferent as we are.

The threat of a war spilling over into Europe, the saber-rattling of empires, the constant threat of nuclear or algorithmic annihilation, and the literal slaughter of believers because they bear the name of Christ are not new problems. They are simply the raw, unvarnished truth of a broken world breaking through our fragile, middle-class peace. They remind us that the world is not a safe suburban neighborhood that occasionally suffers a power outage. It is a battleground where the powers of darkness are raging, and where our technological progress, our treaties, and our defensive alliances are ultimately sandcastles built before an incoming tide.

The Promise that Stands in the Wreckage

The gospel is not a promise that we will escape the wreckage of history, nor is it a guarantee that we will successfully align our machines to be gentle masters. It is the announcement that in the very midst of the wreckage, God has descended into the dark. He did not come to give us a strategy for survival. He came as a victim of our violence, bearing the full weight of our sin, our politics, our technology, and our persecutions in His own body on the tree, and rising again to declare that the grave does not have the final word.

If we expect the gospel to quiet our nerves by telling us that nothing bad will happen to us, we will be sorely disappointed. The gospel is much more radical than that. It tells us that the worst has already happened, since we have crucified the Lord of Glory, and yet, He has returned with peace on His lips.

So we look at the headlines, the empty sanctuaries, the blood-soaked soil of northern Nigeria, the strange, unsettling skies, and the silicon minds rising to challenge our intellect. We do not need to look away, nor do we need to pretend we are not shaken. But we can stop trying to save ourselves. The demand for absolute earthly security is just another way of fleeing from the living God who kills and makes alive. Our security is not found in our ability to manage the future, contain the machines, or broker global peace. It is found solely in the absolute, unconditional promise of the One who has already conquered death, and who holds us fast even when the earth gives way.

There is a tragic rhythm to ecclesiastical history. The ink on the calendars has barely changed, yet we find ourselves watching the exact same script play out in real time. Last week, on July 1, 2026, in Écône, Switzerland, the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) placed its hands on four new bishops in defiance of the Vatican. The response from Rome was swift: a sweeping decree of latae sententiae excommunication from Pope Leo XIV’s doctrinal office, declaring a formal schism.

To the legalist mind, this is simply the law working exactly as it should. The fence was crossed, the alarm tripped, and the offenders were cast out. But this time, Rome went further, drawing a perimeter not just around the immediate perpetrators, but extending the threat of exclusion to the priests and lay faithful who formalize their adherence to the movement.

When you strip away the immediate panic, this is not a new crisis. It is the same foundational panic that echoed through the halls of the Vatican in 1521 when the papal bull Decet Romanum Pontificem cut off the Lutheran Reformers. Both instances expose the deeper, more unsettling pathology of the institutional church: the insistence that the unconditional grace of the Almighty can be effectively managed, contained, and turned off by the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen.

The Illusion of Canonical Alignment

Pope Leo XIV has preached a gospel of unity in diversity, but the events of this past week reveal the exact boundaries of that sentiment. The institutional rationale is simple: the keys to the kingdom are an administrative possession. If you do not have the proper permit, which is the papal mandate, the sacraments you perform are treated as a theft of divine authority.

This treats the church as a sovereign plumbing system where grace only flows through the pipes approved by the current administration. If you hook up an unauthorized line, you are cut off from the source.

But look back at Wittenberg. The core accusation against the Reformers was not a disagreement over liturgical aesthetics, but a challenge to this exact monopoly. The medieval church believed it owned the keys, the treasury of merit, and the authority to decide who was inside or outside the bounds of God’s mercy. When Luther insisted that a conscience is bound by the Word of God alone and not by papal decrees, the institution weaponized the law. Excommunication was used then, as it is used now, as the ultimate assertion of institutional ownership over the Gospel.

The Double Trap of Legalism

What the recent consecrations prove is that legalism is a condition of the human heart that affects both the rebel and the bureaucrat. It is the refusal to let God be unconditional.

• The SSPX Temptation: The traditionalists in Écône have long operated under their own version of the law. They fell into the trap of believing that the Gospel is tied to a specific historical era, a particular liturgical book, and a romanticized vision of the past. In their attempt to defend orthodoxy against modernism, they built a parallel fortress based on the same assumption as their opponents: that validity is a matter of getting the mechanical formulas and the line of succession right.

• The Papal Temptation: The Vatican’s response under Leo XIV demonstrates the opposite side of the coin. By extending the decree of schism to the laity, the hierarchy signals that the ultimate sin is a failure of structural submission. It implies that the unity of the church is maintained by canonical alignment rather than by the proclamation of Christ.

Here, the summer of 2026 mirrors 1521 perfectly. When the institution feels its administrative monopoly threatened, it ceases to act as a witness to the promise and begins to act like a landlord protecting its property line.

When the Ban Fails to Bind

The grand irony of excommunication is that it never actually accomplishes what the bureaucrats intend. You cannot trap the Holy Spirit inside the boundaries of canon law, nor can you exclude Him by papal decree.

When Rome cut Luther off, the bull did not cause the Gospel to vanish from Germany. Instead, the proclaimed Word kept doing what it always does: creating faith where there was none, forgiving sins, and gathering a church entirely apart from the approval of the Roman curia. The ban did not bind Luther’s conscience; it only exposed the fact that the papacy had substituted its own authority for the absolute promise of Christ.

Similarly, this new decree will not cause the SSPX or its followers to evaporate into thin air. They will continue to gather, to preach, and to administer sacraments. The Vatican can declare them outside the visible structure, but the reality is that where two or three are gathered in Christ’s name, hearing that their sins are forgiven by His blood, the church is present, regardless of what the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith writes on a piece of parchment.

The Word Unbound

At the heart of both the sixteenth-century rupture and this current crisis is a battle over the word provided.

The institutional voice says: Christ has redeemed you, provided you remain in canonical alignment with the visible structure under the successor of Peter. The traditionalist voice says: Christ has redeemed you, provided you maintain the pristine forms of the ancient liturgy and reject the modern church.

Both positions turn the Gospel into a conditional contract. They demand that the believer anchor their certainty in something they must do, a group they must belong to, or a law they must satisfy.

But the real proclamation of the Church is not a conditional offer; it is a done deed. It is the unconditioned promise that Christ has died, Christ is risen, and your sins are forgiven here and now. That promise does not look for a papal permit, nor does it require a specific liturgical era to be effective. The institution can brandish the threat of exclusion, and the traditionalists can cling to their fortresses, but the Word of God remains entirely free, refusing to be managed by either side.

Every pastor needs a place to breathe. But more than that, every pastor needs a place where the church doesn't feel like it’s constantly apologizing for its own existence, shrinking into the background, or flattening itself into the bland, consumer-driven landscape of modern American evangelicalism.

That need, coupled with the invitation of a close friend and colleague, is what drew me to St. Meinrad, Indiana, this year for the General Chapter Retreat of the Lutheran Society of the Holy Trinity (Societas Trinitatis Sanctae, or STS).

A Lived Catholicity

I went seeking something specific, and I found it. My attraction to the Society has always stemmed from its unapologetic emphasis on the catholicity of the Lutheran faith. For those who view Lutheranism merely as "Catholicism-Lite" or a 16th-century pitstop on the way to modern denominationalism, the STS offers a striking corrective.

At the retreat, this deep catholicity wasn’t just a theological talking point; it was a lived reality. It was on full display in the rich, reverent liturgical worship, the profound personal piety of the members, which was evident in their shared worship practices, from bowing as the processional cross passes and reverencing the altar upon entering the nave, to making the sign of the cross, bowing during the Gloria Patri, and kneeling for confession. It was also clear in a rigorous, shared focus on the Lutheran Confessional standards. Here were pastors from various synods and denominations who still believe that the Book of Concord is a vibrant, living witness to the Church Catholic.

Yet, my attendance wasn't without its inner tensions. It is one thing to admire a beautiful liturgy from the pews; it is quite another to bind yourself to an institutional expectation. During the retreat, after much deliberation, I took the step to officially sign the "Rule" of the Society to become a member. It was a conscious choice to step into a structured fellowship, but the moment the ink dried, my internal alarm for creeping legalism began to ring.

The Shadow of the Ladder

To anyone who knows my theological formatting, you might expect a pause here. As a pastor deeply shaped by the theology of Gerhard Forde, I am, and remain, inherently skeptical of "rules." Forde taught us to be relentlessly vigilant against any mechanism that smells of the opinio legis, which is the stubborn, human belief that we can somehow construct a ladder of righteousness to climb up to God.

When a Christian, particularly a pastor, binds themselves to a rule of piety, the immediate danger is the homo incurvatus in se, meaning the human being curved in on oneself, obsessing over one's own spiritual progress, tracking metrics of holiness, and ultimately losing sight of the external word of promise.

The struggle for me moving forward will be exactly this: how to follow the Rule in such a way that it does not curve me inward.

And yet, Forde’s radical focus on the Gospel doesn't mean we live in a vacuum. There can be, and is, a proper use of a rule. When understood not as a ladder to heaven or a measure of spiritual superiority, but simply as a horizontal scaffolding, which is a way to anchor our days in prayer, Scripture, and mutual accountability so that we can better serve our neighbors, the Rule serves a humble, yet vital, purpose. It is discipline, not justification.

An Invitation to Fellowship

All in all, I am deeply glad I went. I look forward to future opportunities to participate in the Society’s life and events.

We are a collection of clergy from many different denominations and synods who refuse to let the Lutheran witness be swallowed up by the spirit of the age. The Rule is a challenge, the tension is real, but the fellowship, centered on the catholicity of our faith, is entirely worth it. Become active among us.

But the historic Lutheran tradition has always been far more radical, and far more uncomfortable, than that.

When you look closely at the history of confessional theology, you discover that the old teachers refused to push the mystery of lawlessness entirely into tomorrow. Instead, they held two startling convictions at the very same time. They insisted that the office of the Antichrist was already a concrete reality in history, yet they simultaneously maintained that a final, intensified outbreak of deception would shatter the world before the Last Day.

These two ideas were never seen as mutually exclusive. They were two sides of the same coin, and they matter because they force us to face the true nature of spiritual warfare.

The Present Threat: Usurping the Gospel

The Lutheran Confessions do not mince words about where the spirit of opposition to Christ is most clearly found. The Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope explicitly states that "the Pope is the very Antichrist" (Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope, Paragraph 39).

To modern ears, this sounds like crude, sixteenth-century polemics. But if we read it that way, we miss the entire point. The argument is not that every individual pope is personally a monster. It is a diagnosis of an office and a claim. The tragedy of the papacy, in the eyes of the reformers, was not that it was too secular, but that it was too religious.

By claiming an absolute authority over the Church that belongs to Christ alone, and by obscuring the free promise of justification by faith, the institution had placed itself in the seat of God. The true threat of the Antichrist is never a political tyrant who outlaws religion. It is a religious power that replaces the unconditional Gospel with a conditional law.

Martin Luther himself lived in this tension. He firmly identified the papal system as the historical fulfillment of biblical prophecy, but he never stopped expecting the world to grow darker and more resistant to the Word as the end approached. He knew that the devil does not pack up and leave just because a reformation has happened.

The Dynamic Duo of Lutheran Orthodoxy

As the decades rolled on into the era of Lutheran Orthodoxy, theologians had to think more deeply about how these two realities fit together. They did not abandon the Confessions, but they did refine how we talk about the end.

Martin Chemnitz, the great bridge builder of the generation after Luther, set the trajectory. In his monumental critique of Roman Catholic theology, he argued that the descriptions of deception found in the New Testament were actively happening within the papal structure. Yet, he carefully left the door open for a final, climactic escalation of rebellion before Christ’s return (Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, Part 1).

By the seventeenth century, dogmaticians like Johann Gerhard made this distinction even clearer. In his massive theological writings, Gerhard mapped out a brilliant, threefold understanding of how anti-Christian power operates in the world (Johann Gerhard, Loci Theologici, Locus on the Last Things). He argued that we must understand:

• The Antichrist broadly, which includes all powers and ideologies that oppose Christ,

• The Antichrist properly so called, which is the historical and institutional fulfillment found in the papacy,

• A final, desperate outbreak of evil right before the return of Christ.

Gerhard was fighting on two fronts. He rejected the medieval view that the Antichrist was merely one future guy who would show up for a few years at the end of time. That view, he argued, was a distraction that kept people from seeing the deception happening in front of their faces. But he also rejected any flat, static view of history that denied a final, dramatic increase in tribulation.

Later orthodox giants like Abraham Calov and Johann Quenstedt stood right beside Gerhard. They maintained the confessional identity of the papacy as the Antichrist while keeping their eyes wide open to the biblical warnings of a last-ditch apostasy (Abraham Calov, Systema Locorum Theologicorum; Johann Quenstedt, Theologia Didactico-Polemica).

Reading the Bible Whole

What we see in this classical Lutheran consensus is a refusal to slice up the Scriptures into neat, arbitrary timelines. Unlike modern dispensational systems that map out specific seven-year periods and speculate about geopolitical alliances, the historic Lutheran habit was to read 2 Thessalonians, the letters of John, and Revelation as a unified whole.

They listened to John’s warning that "many antichrists have come" (1 John 2:18), they recognized the unique historical institutionalization of that spirit, and they braced themselves for the final storm.

This leaves us with a theology that is both deeply historical and urgently eschatological. It reminds us that the enemy of the Gospel is already at work, chipping away at the certainty of Christ's cross, while warning us that the final act of this age will involve a profound shaking of our faith. We are caught between a present reality and a future expectation, and our only safety is to cling to the promise that the Word survives the darkness.

The Danger of Looking for Monsters

The real tragedy of modern apocalyptic speculation is that it functions as a giant diversion tactic. By turning the end of the world into a techno-thriller starring a singular, futuristic dictator, we successfully distract ourselves from the deception that is happening right under our noses today. We look for a political monster in the future so we don't have to look at the religious mirrors in our present.

When Gerhard and the old orthodox dogmaticians insisted that the Antichrist was an ongoing, institutional reality, they were trying to keep the Church awake. They understood that the most dangerous threat to your faith is never the pagan state trying to lock the church doors. The most dangerous threat is the voice inside the church telling you that God’s grace isn't quite enough, that Christ's work on the cross needs to be supplemented by your own spiritual progress, your own worthiness, or your own institutional allegiance.

The moment the unconditional promise of the Gospel is turned into a conditional bargain, the spirit of lawlessness has won its victory. It doesn't need a crown or a throne to do that; it only needs a pulpit.

Standing in the Tension

Therefore, the historic Lutheran view leaves us in a posture of vigilant, sober realism. We do not need to read the morning headlines with a secret decoder ring, trying to guess which world leader fits a specific verse in Revelation. But neither can we settle into a comfortable, sleepy status quo, assuming that the dark forces of history have been safely managed.

The two shadows remain. We live in the presence of an ongoing, historical corruption of the Word, and we watch the horizon for a final, desperate gasp of a dying enemy.

But this double warning is ultimately meant to drive us back to a single certainty. The old theologians did not write about the dark things of the end to make us fearful or speculative. They wrote to remind us that when the final shaking comes, and when the deception reaches its peak, the Church will not be saved by its political savvy, its cultural influence, or its theological systems. We will be saved because the One who justifies the ungodly has already spoken His final, unbreakable word over us. The darkness, no matter how institutionalized it becomes or how fiercely it explodes at the end, is already a defeated thing.

When we look back at the Augsburg Confession, our modern, bureaucratic minds want to turn it into a historical compromise or a set of dry doctrinal propositions. But to do that is to domesticate a tiger. The Augsburg Confession was not a negotiation; it was a public declaration that the Gospel is a matter of life and death. It was a catholic witness, an insistence that the Church had spoken this way from the beginning, before it got cluttered by human ambition.

Today, the Augsburg Confession is just as offensive and just as liberating as it was in 1530. It acts as a double edged sword, cutting through our deep seated human desire to have a hand in our own salvation. It completely shatters both the religious scaffolding of Rome and the consumeristic psychodrama of modern American Evangelicalism.

The End of the Ladder: The Real Battle with Rome

The total scandal of the Augsburg Confession is concentrated in Article IV. It says that we cannot be justified before God by our own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ's sake, through faith.

When Rome heard this, they panicked. They understood exactly what was at stake. At the Council of Trent, they drew a hard line in the sand, declaring anathema anyone who said we are justified solely by the imputation of Christ’s righteousness. Rome wanted to keep the ladder. They turned justification into a lifelong process of spiritual self improvement, where God provides the grace and you provide the cooperation. In that system, the cross is just the starting line, and the rest is up to your progress.

Even today, under more polite language, that ladder remains. It tells the anxious conscience that it must constantly check its own spiritual pulse.

Against this, the Augsburg Confession brings a grinding halt to the whole enterprise. It does not offer a program for self-improvement; it announces an end to the ladder. It says that justification is not a process of becoming good enough for God, but a total, forensic declaration that you are righteous right now, solely for Christ’s sake. Christ died, and the case is closed. Augsburg takes the burden off your performance and places it entirely on the crucified and risen Christ.

The Death of Choice: The Illusion of the Evangelical Decision

If Augsburg stands as an eviction notice to Roman legalism, it stands as an executioner to the soft, inward looking religion of American Evangelicalism.

If you walk into almost any contemporary Evangelical church today, you will find a theology that is deeply obsessed with human capacity. Salvation is framed as a deal you strike with God. You are told to make a decision, to accept Jesus into your heart, or to choose a relationship with Him. The focus shifts entirely to the sinner’s will. Faith becomes the ultimate human work, the one thing you must perform to get God to move.

This is nothing more than a recycled, old heresy. It treats the human will as if it were totally free, sitting on a fence, waiting to make a logical choice for God. It makes Jesus a bystander waiting for your permission.

The Augsburg Confession cuts this down without mercy. Article V states that we do not manufacture faith on our own. Instead, God gave us the Ministry of the Word and the Sacraments. Through these concrete, external tools, the Holy Spirit works faith where and when it pleases God. Article XVIII drives the nail in, stating flatly that the human will has no power to work the righteousness of God without the Spirit.

You do not decide for Christ; Christ decides for you. You do not choose Him; He claims you. Faith is not a heroic act of your free will; it is a gift created in you by the external Word that kills your pride and makes you alive. By shifting the focus away from your subjective experiences and placing it squarely on the external realities of Baptism, Absolution, and the Lord’s Supper, Augsburg rescues you from the prison of your own navel-gazing.

Unanimity in the Face of Death

The Confession begins with a striking claim: "Our churches teach with complete unanimity..." This was not a committee agreement on a generic vision statement. It was the unified shout of dying men who had found a trustworthy savior. They stood together on the rock of Scripture, refusing to invent a new faith, but insisting on the old one.

Commemorating the Augsburg Confession is not about nostalgia. It is about a recurring crisis of faith. We are constantly tempted to slide back into the exhausting merit-trap of Rome or the fragile, self-centered decisionism of our culture. The Augsburg Confession remains the antidote.

It does not offer advice on how to save yourself. It delivers the shocking, unconditional news that you have already been saved by an absolute grace. It leaves us with nothing to do but believe it, stand up, and confess it.
