Here is your monthly reminder to prepare for another month of study. There are lots of options on Words on My Heart and in the Scripture Writing Club.

Scripture writing makes living scriptures, like Proverb 3:3, in a daily walk with the Lord so much easier.

If you have a daily practice of reading and copying something, anything, from scripture you have a ready-made feeding of the word to meditate on.

If you write out a scripture today, but tomorrow gets busy - guess what? You will still have today’s scripture on your mind to think about, talk about, and pray about. It doesn’t stop being useful - ever.

I hope that making a plan for study and prayer is something you do to make being diligent about building a godly life a reality.

Expressing gratitude and thanksgiving is a topic that is discussed a lot in scripture.

If you find yourself repeating the same words, but feeling as though you ought to be able to say more - try walking through the Bible looking for everything God has shared about expressing gratitude. The study will help you to form your prayers and let go of guilt or doubt that gets in the way of your prayers.

Spend time in God’s word. Let it build your vocabulary for expressing gratitude to Him. See if it prompts to you say “thank you” for things you have not thought to express gratitude for specifically. You may find that you are able to devote whole prayers just to thanksgiving.

(That means just pausing for a moment to pray, meditate, and consider something beneficial from God’s word. Feed your heart and mind in the small moments of your day. :) )

Boaz shares what he has learned about Ruth after watching her work in his fields in Ruth 2:11-12.

• All that she has done for Naomi

• How she left her parents and the land of her birth

• How she chose to be with people she did not previously know.

Don’t ever think that the things you do go unnoticed. God sees them, absolutely. But other people are watching too.

Does your work ethic draw the attention of others? If someone were to start asking about you, what would they learn? What would others point out about you?

We are not always in control of reputation - evil people will say evil things sometimes. But, generally, we are in control of what people think about us.

Pause for just a minute and consider - based on what you’ve done this week - how would others see your actions? What reputation would they share about you? Even your children will have a report to give if someone asks them!

If the picture isn’t what you would like it to be - choose one way you can work to make it better. Pray for wisdom to choose and do better. So the next time someone watches, they can say “May the Lord reward your work, and your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.”

When studying Deborah in the book of Judges it is common to focus on Deborah and then possibly on Jael. Both of these women are the heroines of the day that is for certain. But there are interesting lessons to learn about the tribes of Israel when studying the song that Deborah offered in victory.

This video takes a look at Judges 4-5 to gather some lessons from those who showed up to win the day as well as from those who…did not.

This month’s scripture writing theme is about The Gospel

“The Gospel” can be a pretty broad theme in scripture.

So, how are we going to write scriptures that teach the gospel?

Jesus came teaching “the gospel of the kingdom” (Mt. 4:23). The book of Mark begins, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God…”. Acts 8:25 shows that “the word of the Lord” and “the gospel” are the same thing. Acts 20:24 talks about the “gospel of the grace of God”. Romans 10:15 says, “the gospel of peace”. And Galatians 1:6-9 tells us that we better make sure we are obedient to THE gospel and no “other” gospel someone might teach.

Like I said – it’s a pretty broad theme. But then again, it really isn’t.

Where will we start writing scriptures about The Gospel?

When I was putting together the Jesus Christ: Yesterday, Today, & Forever Scripture Writing I also began pulling verses together about Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Believe me, I had NO trouble finding 31 verses – there are so many contexts that talk about Jesus’ sacrifice and triumph over death.

As I wrote all that out, I noted two scriptures in particular…

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Paul says “the gospel which I preached to you…that Christ died for our sins…that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day…”.

And Acts 8:30,35 “Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’” – The “Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this scripture he preached Jesus to him.” part kept me thinking.

It struck me that from a passage in Isaiah, Isaiah 53, that prophesied of the death, burial, and resurrection Philip taught the Eunuch “Jesus” in such a way that the man quickly saw his need to baptized (Acts 8:36-39). Which got me to thinking – how could we start in the prophesy and come around to the truth that fulfilled it in a 31-day writing?

This month’s writing sets out to do that. There are many other ways we could approach the information. Many more verses could have been included. But I wanted to keep it simple while also getting a full clear picture.

The Simplicity and Complexity of The Gospel

While The Gospel is as simple as Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. It is more complex because His death, burial, and resurrection are THE hinge upon which all other aspects of scripture swing. God’s plan for creation from the beginning going all the way to our hope of heaven one day is based on the fact that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose triumphant over death on the third day. He LIVES so that we might live with Him in heaven as joint heirs. There are many aspects to that obedient faith and all that goes into it.

The simple truth is – we need Jesus and Jesus met our need as no other could. The deeper truth is – He gave His life, and our lives lived daily are all that we have to offer in return.

Sharing these scriptures with you is to build us all up to a unity of faith in The Gospel.

Study The Gospel for 31 Days

So, take a walk through scriptures that begin in Isaiah 53, just like the Eunuch and Philip did and then see where the story of Jesus might point the way to the reasonable conclusion the Eunuch made in Acts 8:36-38.

Now that you are done - can you think of other scriptures you would use coming from Isaiah 53 as a study? There are probably many study paths that could be made just for this effort. Fun Fun!

We see these three themes move around each other in a circle all throughout the Bible. Faith comes by hearing (Rom. 10:17). Hearing what? The Gospel. Sound words are the teaching that forms a pattern or doctrine found in the faith and love which are in Jesus Christ. These concepts ARE The Gospel. How we express what we learn about The Gospel become the language of sound/sober/healthy worship in a daily walk of obedience (Romans 12:1-2).

Some people offered worship to God before they had even heard the Gospel (Acts 11:13-14). Sound Words showed the way to salvation which lead to more worship.

Each concept grows from and builds upon the others. They are distinct themes - but they are inseparable.

What other verses can you find to add to any, or all, of these themes?

Thread them together in your Bible or notes in a way that allows you to use them to teach the same concepts to others.

How well would you say you trust God with your health issues?

Do you only take the small ones to Him because those will likely be easy to correct? Do you give your trust to the medical community for the really big issues?

God certainly can use the medical community as a tool to facilitate healing, but at the end of the day He is in control of whether or not those man-driven efforts will be effective or not. But sometimes, it is really hard to trust God that much. Our desire to be in control and to know the outcomes causes us to put more trust in the delegated powers here on on Earth than we might in the ultimate power in heaven.

What makes that so hard for us, do you think? Share your thoughts below. Maybe we can find a way to encourage each other to grow to trust God more than we do today.

Following the Thread of Sound Words

The word “sound” can have many meanings. When it is used as an adjective it can also have several slightly different meanings (Isn’t the English language wonderful? It gives so many options sometimes). Two of the options, as a describing word, that apply to our study are:

• solid, firm; stable

• free from error, fallacy or misapprehension

(You can find the full English definition for “sound” in Webster’s Dictionary)

When one is talking about God’s word and a person’s daily use of it, wouldn’t you want those words to be reliable, stable, and free from error?

This Scripture writing plan walks through how the Bible talks about using scripture and having Sound Words in the way you communicate with others.

Utilizing WOMH Kit #3

The WOMH Kit #3 includes three scripture writing plans:

Salvation

Sound Words (which you are reading now)

Self-control.

At first glance, these may not seem like topics that go together.

Consider this: Obedience is a vital part of Salvation. Obedient faith is what separates us from the demons! (James 2:19-24). Once you are certain of your need for salvation and how one accesses it through the blood of Jesus Christ, the next phase is to learn how to walk in the will of God. That whole process is done with a desire to be obedient to God.

Self-control is one of the first things we learn to begin applying to our walk with God. We apply it to our thoughts (2 Cor. 10:5) as well as to our actions (1 Corinthians 7:9).

Sound Words then becomes a specific area of study of HOW to be obedient by exhibiting self-control in relation to the WORDS we speak, whether teaching or just conversing.

In 2 Peter 1:5-11 we see these three concepts linked, along with others.

“Entrance…into the everlasting kingdom…” = salvation

“self-control” = natural step that follows knowledge and leads to perseverance

“knowledge”, “godliness”, “brotherly kindness”, and “love” = ways obedient faith is lived out loud - including literally by the words we say to others.

Pulling these three topics into a 3-month devoted study can open your heart to see how other topics fit into the big picture of God’s saving grace.

Put these plans on your calendar for the next three months and see where they lead you.

Remember, God is aware of your needs - physical, emotional, and spiritual. God created you to be whole and He has provided the means for you to be whole again, through Him.

This study finishes with these scriptures:

Read them with a mind focused on health. What is shared in each verse that could be applied to your health?

Even when the context is focused on a spiritual situation, God often shows that your physical circumstances are impacted by that spiritual battle. Not all illness is directly due to sin, BUT unresolved sin might be what is keeping healing from happening. The sin can be the cause or it can be the thing that gets in the way of finding health.

Notice how Satan chooses to impact Job’s health - mental, emotional, and physical - to try to destroy Job’s spiritual health. These things are connected to one another. Satan just fails to understand how powerful spiritual health is over all the others!

What aspects of health do you see God talking about here?

God often states things as givens - things He expects that everyone already understands. These verses show that it is natural to understand that our mood impacts our ability to heal from illness or injury. They show that the aromas, spices, and ingredients found in God’s creation do have a benefit to your health. Seeking to surround yourself with GOOD things is a natural response when you want to be healthy and happy.
