It feels like this month everyone quietly agreed that they’re not going to gree for anyone and we’re not stopping at people, we’re facing institutions now too.

214 UNICAL students just did what generations of frustrated Nigerian undergrads only dreamed of: they took their own school to court.

These students paid fees for three sessions, sat exams, hit 300 Level, only to be told “actually, you were never really a student here” by a Vice Chancellor who had to break the news on an issue he himself didn’t even cause.

Now there’s a ₦5 billion lawsuit, locked portals, and President Tinubu himself listed as a defendant, because apparently when Nigerian institutions fumble admissions this badly, even Aso Rock has to answer for it.

Here’s the part that stings: this isn’t even solely about 214 students, it represents a bigger issue. It’s about a system where JAMB regularisation, departmental transfers, and admission letters can all say one thing for three years, then quietly mean nothing the moment one oga at the top decides otherwise.

Students built entire academic identities, and futures, on paperwork the school itself is now disowning.

Nigerian Twitter has been so unhinged lately and I absolutely love it can’t lie 😂😂.

I just feel a little bad for the poor BBN cast this season, they probably think they’re trending right now 🤣🤣

Shallipopi and Seyi Vibez are out here claiming Dapper is casually sitting on over $1M of their money, while Jude Okoye allegedly chopped $1.2M from his own blood brother. If this doesn’t prove that “we are family” in business is the biggest scam in Nigeria, I don’t know what will.

So nobody was going to tell me music money is this heavy, please how much does a studio session cost? I have some ideas 😂

On a serious note, the pattern is very clear: almost every toxic job in Nigeria starts with “we’re a family here” energy, and a contract nobody reads past the salary line.

A brutal job hunt is a breeding ground for desperate decisions. Before you know it, you’re doing four people’s work for half a person’s pay, wondering how you got there.

The initial high of “I got the job!” made you forget to ask, “Wait, got what exactly?”

Moral of the story? It’s okay to celebrate the offer, but read the fine print. Don’t let corporate Nigeria Cynthia Morgan you.

Everyone remembers the exact course they picked when filling out their JAMB form. We also all know how it goes: you propose, but Nigerian universities dispose sharp sharp.

Chances are, you got saddled with a course you barely recognized, and every relative at family gatherings since has been looking at you like you personally volunteered for unemployment.

Yeah… let’s talk about that.

We found people who studied the courses Nigerians loves to make fun of:

  • Theatre Arts

  • Religious Studies etc

The whole “sorry, what will you do with that” starter pack and somehow they ended up thriving in careers nobody, including them, saw coming.

One of them is now a creative director who used to get side-eyed for majoring in drama. Another turned “useless” arguments about God into a whole brand strategy career.

Big 4, Small Mercy

Nobody warns you that “Big 4” is just corporate speak for “we will break you into exactly four pieces.”

There’s no workplace idolization quite like an entry-leveler idolization of the Big 4. It's not just a job, it's an identity upgrade. The name on your CV becomes a personality trait. Your LinkedIn banner changes before your first day even starts. Your uncles finally stop asking when you're "getting a proper job."

Here’s what doesn’t make it into the recruitment brochure: the 12-hour days that start the moment you’re onboarded. The “no pressure” deadlines that somehow always need to be done yesterday. The culture where staying late isn’t optional, it’s basically the interview for keeping your job. The seniors who measure your commitment by how long you sit at your desk, not what you actually get done.

And the kicker? You’ll be told this is “normal.” That it’s “just how the industry works.” There’s prestige of the name is doing double duty: it’s the reward, and it’s also the reason nobody questions the exhaustion. You endure the grind because the badge feels too valuable to complain about.

So before you start chasing the offer letter like it’s your way out, ask yourself what you’re actually signing up for. The name might open doors, but it’s worth knowing what’s behind the one you’re about to walk through.

Here’s the real parttea: admissions committees are not out here reading your CGPA and closing the laptop. They read the WHOLE application, and CGPA is just one part in a very long conversation. We went and found the people who lived this: the guy whose “boring” addendum turned two soft rejections into two admits AND a scholarship, and the babe whose random unpaid research paper carried her application.

The tweet in question wants ICAN to lock its exams to only finance majors, apparently tired of watching zoologists and plant scientists “drag” their way into accounting. Meanwhile Osasere just proved you don’t even need to be old enough to legally rent a car to pass the hardest exam in the profession. The math (pun intended) isn’t mathing.

So we did what we do best — took a tweet way too seriously, took a look at why professional exams exist and why “protecting standards” is often just “protecting my ego,” and why your Botany degree does not, in fact, doom you to a life of counting leaves forever.

Okay, so real quick — remember that job you applied for, got SO excited about, tailored your CV for, maybe even prayed a little... and then got rejected at 2:47 am? Less than ten minutes after you hit submit?

Yeah. That wasn’t a recruiter pulling an all-nighter to “personally review” your application. That was a robot. And apparently, a LOT of people have been getting ghosted by the same robot, because there’s now a federal lawsuit accusing Workday’s AI hiring software of discriminating against applicants based on age, race, and disability — at a scale that’s honestly hard to wrap your head around. We’re talking over a billion job applications processed by this thing.

If you’ve ever side-eyed a suspiciously fast rejection and thought “there’s no way a human read this” — congratulations, you might’ve been onto something way bigger than you realised.

Hey, Workie!

Okay, so unless you’ve been living under a rock or you didn’t go to school in Nigeria, you know getting failed in a Nigerian university doesn’t actually require failing.

We collected four stories from students who got a big fat F for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with academic performance, and honestly, reading them back to back felt like a public service announcement for every student currently stressed about their grades for legitimate reasons. One person failed an entire course over something that happened in a corridor! Not in class ooo, not on a test, in a corridor. Another got swept into a punishment meant for three different people, in a lecture hall of 200 students who had nothing to do with what happened. There’s a final-year project that got rejected because of a grudge the panel member was carrying from four years before the student even gained admission.

The unfairness alone will have you typing angry comments before you even finish reading. But what happened after — how each of them clawed their way back, retook what needed retaking, and came out the other side — is honestly the part that stayed with me the longest.

I’m not going to tell you which story annoyed me the most because I want you to feel the full range of emotions yourself. Just know that by story three, you will need a moment.

Oya, let’s be real. If one more person tells you “your network is your net worth” without explaining how to do it without dying of embarrassment, you might scream. Sliding into a Creative Director or Tech Bro’s LinkedIn DMs when your university degree is still smelling of fresh photocopy center ink is awkward.

Drop the “Respected Sir/Ma” in 2015 where it belongs, and try these rules instead:

  • Stop sending blank connection requests: Winking at someone in the dark doesn’t work. When you hit connect, add a short note highlighting something they actually created.

  • The “Can I buy you coffee?” scam is dead: Inside this Lagos traffic? With this fuel price? If you ask a busy professional for coffee, they will ignore you. Ask for a 10-minute virtual chat, or ask one specific, fast question via text instead.

  • Look sideways, not just up: Stop chasing only CEOs. The classmate sitting next to you or the person you’re arguing with in a tech WhatsApp group? They are your network. In three years, they’ll be the Content Leads and Founders pulling you into rooms.

The Golden Rule: Never show up empty-handed. Even without an official job, have your “receipts” ready, a Google Drive of practice articles, a Notion page of mock designs, or your GitHub link. Passion doesn’t pay invoices; proof of work does.

They just ended a 22-year Premier League drought — genuinely historic — and somehow that’s already been reduced to a footnote because they didn’t complete the double.

Sound familiar?

I’ve been thinking about how deeply irritating it is that no accomplishment is ever just allowed to exist around African parents. You finish something hard — genuinely hard — and before you can even sit with it, someone has already found the comparison, the caveat, the “but when.”

“Your cousin graduated the same time and he’s already at Deloitte.” “So what is this one even useful for?”

There is a very particular skill Nigerian parents have: taking a genuine win and immediately pivoting to the next problem. It’s not entirely malice. Some of it is anxiety dressed in a wrapper of love. But what it does to you — standing there holding your result, your certificate, your first offer letter — is make you feel like you are perpetually one step behind a finish line that keeps moving.

Here’s what nobody tells you: the goalpost was never yours to begin with.

You are allowed to feel proud without needing someone to co-sign it. You are allowed to be a fresh graduate who is figuring it out, who doesn’t have a LinkedIn update every month, who is building something that doesn’t look like what your parents expected — and still be doing well.

The job market is a horror show, yes. The economy is real. None of that means you are behind. It means you are navigating something genuinely hard, and you deserve credit for still showing up.

You did the thing. Don’t let anyone average it out for you.

Okay, so university humbled me in ways that therapy has not fully addressed.

Garri and I had a whole relationship. Not a casual thing — a committed, monogamous, see-you-every-day relationship. Garri was my breakfast. Garri was my dinner. Garri was there for me when no one else was. Some people had meal plans. I had garri and the audacity to keep going. I thought this was the peak of university suffering. I thought I had seen the worst of it.

Then someone told me about this girl who couldn’t afford to refill her gas cylinder and decided — calmly, rationally, like a woman who had done her research — that firewood was the move.

Not as a joke. Not as a joke. As a plan.

She had a notepad. She had subheadings. She had done a full cost-per-meal breakdown, factoring in cooking frequency over two weeks. Her roommate came home, looked at the notepad, looked at her, and without saying a single word called her boyfriend and borrowed money on this girl’s behalf — no consultation, no warning, just immediate intervention.

And this girl had the nerve to be slightly irritated about it. Because she felt her calculations were correct.

They were correct. That’s the worst part. The math was right. The vision was just completely unhinged.

I cackled for five minutes and then felt a deep sadness I could not explain.

What I will say is this: the Nigerian job market is brutal enough to turn red flags into background noise. When you’ve been rejected enough times, your brain starts doing a very dangerous kind of arithmetic.

You just graduated. You’re sending out applications. A job listing says “entry level” and then quietly mentions “2–3 years of experience required.” You close the tab. You open it again. You close it again.

We’ve all been there. It’s annoying. It’s also not the end of your story.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you’re staring at a blank CV — experience is not only the thing that happens when someone signs a contract with you. Did you run your fellowship’s Instagram and grow it from 200 followers to 2,000? That’s content strategy. Did you organize your department’s end-of-year event with ₦50,000 and pure faith? That’s budget management and logistics. Did you write a final year project that required months of independent research? That’s project management, and honestly, some adults with job titles can’t say the same.

The goal is not to lie. The goal is to stop underselling yourself.

A clean CV with honest, well-framed content will take you further than you think. Lead with a short personal statement. List the skills you actually have. Include the internship that felt too brief to mention. Put the volunteer work. Put the certificate from that one conference you attended. All of it counts.

No, it’s not a perfect situation. Yes, the job market is doing the most right now. But “I have no experience” and “I have nothing to offer” are two very different sentences and only one of them is true.

Fix your CV. Send the application. You’re more qualified than you’re giving yourself credit for.

NYSC is not for the faint-hearted. We have evidence.

Khaki on your back, posting letter in your hand, and absolutely zero idea what the next twelve months have in store for you. That’s the deal. That’s always been the deal. And yet somehow, every year, a fresh batch of Nigerian graduates walks into orientation camp with optimism. Bless them.

We asked around for the stories people tell in hushed tones at reunions — the ones that start with “I’ve never told anyone this but—” What came back was a lot. A lot a lot.

Five corpers. Five service years. Five experiences that will make you want to call your NYSC coordinator and ask them some very serious questions.

There’s the one where a camp official was running a whole extortion operation at midnight — organized, consistent, untouchable. The one where someone reported to their PPA every single day for three months and the building was, quite literally, empty. And then there’s story four, which honestly we weren’t expecting when we asked for submissions. A Computer Science grad. One panicked lie in a staff meeting. An entire local government secretariat that restructured its behaviour around a corper who had, until six months prior, been eating indomie in a hostel room.

The plaque is under his bed. He does not display it.

We have five of these. They only get worse — and funnier, and more infuriating, and more this country — from here.

How to Cold Email Recruiters (When You Have No Connections)

Let’s be honest. The job market has turned “entry level” into a dirty lie. Every role wants three to five years of experience, a master’s degree, and a personal relationship with the hiring manager’s cousin.

So if you’re going to get anywhere, you have to go around the gate and straight to the recruiter’s inbox.

Here’s how.

  1. Finding The Email

Most recruiters are on LinkedIn. Find the HR person or talent acquisition lead at the company you want. Once you have their name, the guesswork is mostly over. Companies follow predictable email formats e.g

  • firstname@company.com

  • firstname.lastname@company.com

  • f.lastname@company.com

Tools like Hunter.io will confirm which format the company uses, sometimes handing you the exact address. If that fails, Apollo.io and RocketReach are your next stops. None of this is illegal. All of it works.

  1. Writing The Email

Subject line first and make it as specific as possible. “Application – Marketing Associate Role (Lekki)” beats “Seeking Opportunity” the way jollof beats rice and stew. Nobody opens vague.

Keep the body short. One sentence on who you are, one on why this company specifically, one on what you bring, and a clear ask (a referral, a conversation, or to be considered for a role). Attach your CV. Do not write a cover letter inside the email body. Nobody has time.

Do not open with “Good day, I humbly write to express my interest.” That construction has never gotten anyone a job. Sound like a person, not a petition.

One last thing

Follow up once, about five days later. Brief, no groveling. If they don’t respond after that, move on. The goal is volume with quality — not blasting the same desperate email to fifty people, but sending ten sharp, tailored ones that actually land.

The system is tilted. Cold emailing is just you tilting back.

Is entry level a myth now?

Can someone explain to me when “entry level” started meaning three to five years of experience, a portfolio, two certifications, and the willingness to work for half of what the role is actually worth? Because I missed that memo.

We keep telling young people to go to school, build their skills, put in the work and then they graduate and walk into a job market that has essentially decided that nobody deserves a starting point anymore. Every “junior” role wants a mid-level candidate at a junior salary. Every internship is unpaid but somehow also competitive. Every application asks for experience you can only get from a job you can’t get because you don’t have experience.

It’s a closed loop designed to frustrate people into giving up, and the worst part is we’ve normalized it. Companies are not struggling to find talent, they’re struggling to find experienced talent they don’t have to pay fairly, and those are very different problems.

Entry level used to mean we will train you. Now it means come already trained, already proven, already exhausted from trying to prove yourself and maybe we’ll consider you.

The myth isn’t that the jobs don’t exist. It’s that they were ever really meant for beginners in the first place.

Your NYSC Year Is Not a Gap Year

A lot of corps members spend the year counting down to their certificate while the opportunity quietly expires around them. Don’t be that person.

NYSC is twelve months of relatively low-stakes freedom a potentially new city, new people, and less pressure than you’ll likely have at any other point in your career. The question is what you do with it. If your PPA is relevant to your field, show up like you’re being paid a full salary. Take initiative, leave an impression. Many corps members have been retained or referred simply because of how they performed during service year.

If your PPA has nothing to do with your career, use your free time to build — take a course, freelance, work on a project. The allowance is small but your time is generous. And don’t sleep on the networking either. The person next to you at orientation could be a founder, a hiring manager, or a connector in just a few years.

NYSC won’t make or break your career. But how you approach it says a lot about the professional you’re becoming.
