A small newsletter can become commercially useful surprisingly early.

The right readers just need enough moments of recognition.

This starts with: Making every free post point to one expensive problem.

If you sell website messaging, a broad post about better copy can create interest, but a post about a reader’s homepage attracting plenty of traffic while enquiries for some reason stay flat, will make a potential client think:

That’s exactly what’s happening to me.

That recognition is where free content starts doing commercial work.

So here’s the test. Before you publish, ask:

• Which expensive problem (or costly in other ways, time, resources, etc.) will the right reader recognize in themselves after reading this?

Then push the idea one level deeper:

• What’s happening in their real life when this problem shows up? It’s where phrases become moments, like “low conversion” becomes people visiting the site, scrolling to a certain point, then disappearing.

• What have they already tried? Maybe they rewrote some headlines, and changed the funnel to AIDA, but it didn’t work.

• What exactly does this problem cost them? Analyze both on a business level and personally. Lost enquiries, wasted traffic, delays, another month relying only on referrals, time and mental energy trying to figure out another solution.

• What would make them realize they need specifically your help? Are you addressing their exact repeated frustration, do you know why their first fix failed and can explain it, and what does your solution bypass that makes your offer too good to say no to?

This gives you a much stronger article than starting with a broad topic.

Start with the moment the reader already cares about.

A newsletter can become commercially useful with a surprisingly small readership.

What matters most is having the right people reading it.

If your service is truly valuable, meaning it solves a problem that’s irritating enough, around 50 well-matched readers can realistically generate your first enquiries (on top of upgrading to paid!).

A service-led newsletter has this one job:

• To bring in people with a problem you know how to solve,

• To show them how you think about that problem,

• And to give the right readers a clear way to hire you to solve it.

So this changes how and what you build.

You’re building your newsletter around this one clear path from the beginning. For example:

• A copywriter can write for small software companies struggling to explain what they sell.

• A book editor can work with new writers who have a strong book idea and a messy first draft.

• A brand strategist can write for independent consultants who’s business has outgrown the homemade identity they started with.

All these newsletters could stay relatively small and still do their commercial job really well.

The elephant in the room

I’m allergic to reading about AI everywhere. But I have to address this:

Yes, writers still get jobs. Especially now in late 2026 and going forward.

Everyone knows now that yes AI can draft copy, edit a page, or produce something labelled a brand strategy in seconds. Businesses know this too. They’ve been using it.

By now, everyone has also learned that AI can’t replace skilled, real life human work in areas that require one thing:

A soul.

In this survey of more than 5,000 small and medium sized businesses (including in the UK), 83% saw no reduction in overall human staff needs after adopting generative AI.

Plus, many had said AI even increased their need for human skilled work with an actual human perception of reality, especially in creative areas.

So yes, producing words has become fast and cheap.

But judgement, taste, context, perception, lived experience and taking responsibility for outcomes are still very much human jobs.

They want you!

Moving on…

What you can start building

The basic model looks like this.

Specific reader → Expensive or frustrating problem → Useful writing about that problem → Clear service that solves it completely → Enquiry

Your newsletter sits in the middle.

It gives people repeated evidence that you understand their situation before they ever have to speak to you. This makes a lot of difference when you sell expertise..

A potential client can see:

• What you notice about their world,

• How you diagnose their problems,

• What you think is important and what you ignore,

• How specific your advice usually is,

• And whether they trust your judgement.

By the time they reach your service page, you’re no longer a stranger.

This model works especially well if:

You have a skill people already hire people for.

Optional but highly beneficial, you have specific lived experience related to that skill.

You can solve a fairly niche problem related to that skill.

One client is financially meaningful enough that you don’t need hundreds of sales each month.

You’re willing to write around the problems your future clients face in real life week after week, month after month.

But it’s a poor fit if:

You have no idea what solution you could eventually sell to solve a niche problem.

Your offer is so cheap that you’d need to close hundreds of customers every month.

You mainly want to write personal essays with no connection to a commercial problem.

You’re hoping the newsletter itself will reveal the business later. (This can sometimes happen, but can you afford to chance it?)

Also, there’s nothing wrong with building an audience first, it just asks for a different business model.

For this one, we start with the business.

You can have:

A great subject.

A Notes app stuffed with post ideas.

Subscribers.

Years of writing experience.

And still have absolutely no idea how the newsletter is supposed to make money. Yes, you’ve created some paid content, but no one is upgrading.

I have 2 independent newsletters at the moment (Ghost and Substack), and I’ve made versions of this mistake myself:

You get excited about the content first. What you’ll write, how often. Overanalyze which platform. What the header should look like. Your first 10 posts.

Meanwhile the business is still sitting in the corner waiting to be built.

If things don’t seem like they’re moving, before writing another 20 posts, I’d work out these 5 things.

1.) A buyer you can actually picture

Yep, that dreaded, silly-seeming avatar.

Because “writers” is not an audience.

Neither is:

• Creatives

• Freelancers

• Entepreneurs

• People who want to make money online.

They’re huge groups of people, with multiple sub-groups and sub-sub-groups within them, with completely different problems.

Compare:

Writers who want to grow,

with

Experienced freelance writers who have decent skills but unreliable client enquiries.

Now I can definitely picture the second person.

More importantly, I can start figuring out what they might want to pay for.

2.) A problem annoying enough to need a solution

Interesting topics get read. Amazing writing gets read.

Persistent problems get money spent on them.

Someone will happily read 30 posts about creativity and never pay you a penny (learned the hard way).

But, certain problems within your readership group will keep resurfacing, like:

“I have no predictable way of finding my next client.”

It affects income. I creates uncertainty, and googling another list of freelance writing tips probably hasn’t fixed it.

That’s exactly the kind of annoying problem you’re looking for.

3.) Your paid offer of outcome

This is where things get fuzzy.

The internet is obviously flooded with premium insights, with deep dives, with exclusive access, and instant checklist downloads.

But if a reader is considering paying you today, what are they actually asking themselves as part of the decision process?

They don’t care about those faded power words.

We have a new true power word now:

The outcome. The change.

They’re asking:

“What changes for me after I pay?”

So to keep with our earlier example, a strong outcome offer would be:

• Build a simple newsletter that attracts potential warm clients and gives interested people a clear route to enquire about one service.

Which gives the reader a clear clue:

“I know what I’m buying. I also know when I’ll have achieved it.”

4.) A bridge between the free stuff and the thing you sell

Your free posts shouldn’t exist in a separate universe from your paid offer.

If the paid outcome is more reliable client enquiries, your free writing could cover:

• Why a broad newsletter attracts the wrong readers,

• Why “hire me” in the footer rarely does much,

• How to choose a service people already need,

• What to publish before asking someone to work with you.

Each post solves a small part of the problem.

And each one quietly makes the larger problem clearer.

So when the paid solution appears, it doesn’t feel like somebody suddenly wheeled a sales prop trolley into the room.

It belongs there.

5.) Somewhere your first 100 warm people can come from

This is the part I’d definitely work out before fully committing to an idea:

• Where are the people who have this exact problem already spending time?

• How am I going to get a 100 of them to leave that place and re-route to mine?

The place could be another newsletter, a specific professional community, Medium, Reddit, LinkedIn, a specific class or workshop…

And each specific place it’s going to need a slightly different native approach or outreach.

If the answer so far is something like “hopefully Substack algorithm finds them”, I wouldn’t call the acquisition plan finished.

How to tie this together

Take a broad idea:

A newsletter about freelancing.

Now tighten it:

Buyer → Experienced freelance writer with inconsistent enquiries.

Problem → They can do the work, but client acquisition is unpredictable.

Paid outcome → Build a newsletter that turns useful expertise into qualified service enquiries.

Free content → Diagnose the mistakes stopping the newsletter attracting and converting its warm readers.

Acquisition process → Writing communities, Medium, newsletter partnerhips, specific types of targeted outreach.

Same writer.

Same general subject.

Much more obvious business path.

And that’s really just the starting skeleton!

I think it’s precisely the times when you have everything prepped and planned to a T, that things are guaranteed to fall apart.

I had my new book launch scheduled perfectly in time to be built into good positions on Audible and Amazon by December. So that loads of people buy it as a Christmas gift.

Actually, technically it’s two books - one shorter audiobook that will remain audio and ebook only, then a bundle involving this short book and one other, that’s going to be the main focus in both audio and print.

Anyhow, by now all of the above was meant to be making sales.

I’d love to say that life had other plans, but I’m starting to realize that most of it is kind of my own fault.

First, I booked a trip to New York. I’m just gonna work around it, I thought.

Then, the audio files for the short book were delayed. There was an issue with background noise removal. (To be fair, this was nobody’s fault, and my narrator was able to clean them all up in a few days.)

Then, I submitted the audiobook to be published. Usually, Audible takes the best part of up to 20 days to review submitted audiobooks before they go live.

In the meantime, I was supposed to work on the cover and interior files for the bundle. Instead, I worked hard to ensure I pack my suitcase half-empty to leave space for NY vintage shopping.

And of course, Audible published my book in the middle of my trip. You see, it’s crucial that you start working on building up your book straight away on the day it’s published.

There was no way I was going to do that. I was probably in a jazz bar in Tribeca, or at the Garden watching David Gilmour and The New York Rangers.

When we got home, jetlag demanded I wake up at 2 o’clock in the afternoon for the next 2 days.

Then, still dazed, I was determined to start work - and I accidentally set off the free promo which is not supposed to happen at all, until you have at least a few reviews.

Now it’s almost December and I’m just about on track with the short book, with the bundle still nowhere near finished.

So yeah.

I guess the Escada trousers, Manolo loafers and Max Mara coat will have to work serious overtime.

Anyway, I’m going to do a series of updates on how I’m dragging the books out of this mess.

Obviously the pre-Christmas time plan is out the window, but everything else is fixable.

• Emerging growth or steady growth

• Demand combined with space for new books to take top positions

• Enough on-demand keywords that actually get traffic

Another week when the featured niche tends to be a busy topic!

Which is why many people make the mistake of going for the most obvious and more often than not their books end up suffocated by competition.

A better strategy, if you’ve chosen a busy niche, is to look for the road less travelled. There are always unobvious ways to benefit from the popularity of a topic. Always look for those and most importantly create a unique selling point.

Today’s niche and categories are exactly that, all you need is a USP that stands out, and your book could potentially grab a lot of attention.

High competition niches: Most people are petrified of them.

And to a large extent, they should be.

Winning sales there is hard work. You need experience, be ready to experiment. I don’t normally recommend choosing them.

But… there’s a big but.

Not all high competition is built the same. Learn how to read between the lines, and you can grab a much larger, thicker, and creamier slice of the revenue pie than expected.

Because, unlike the real sea, the virtual sea still has plenty of fish left swimming in it.

And your super trendy competition is serving you their payment cards, out and ready to tap, on a silver platter.

All you need to know is how to strike and steal the sales.

Communicate your USP in under 2 seconds

As I’ve explained in my 7 Step Guide To Publishing Books in 2024, having a standout USP from your rival books is crucial to your book’s success.

Now, put yourself in your potential reader’s shoes… They search for a keyword and the results pop up.

You have up to 2 seconds to make them “get” your USP.

Otherwise they’ll just keep scrolling.

People scan first. Only after a spark of interest are they willing to invest time and brain energy to inspect the details.

I’ve made these mistakes before: Tried to be impressive with my title + subtitle, used “clever” words, squashed in keywords like unfortunate sardines into a tin.

It’s too much. People want to grasp and grab things fast. Thinking is the enemy of sales.

Do this instead:

• Use plain English

• Use power words (many power words are also simple words)

• Make your USP & key benefit clear as day to a 5 year old

• Say it in the fewest words possible

• Make USP & key benefit striking & bold on your book cover design

Your book title, subtitle, and first 5 lines of book description give you plenty of crafting space to nail this.

Use psychology pricing

But be careful — even psychology pricing could hurt your book if you use the wrong bait.

Like Charm pricing: $9.99 instead of $10.

Yes it’s still being used a lot.

But it’s so salesy. Everyone knows it’s a trick. It could lower the perceived quality of your book.

You can be more sophisticated than that:

Odd pricing

People perceive prices ending in even numbers as too expensive and premium.

High-end designers use even numbers for this reason. You’ll never see a .99 pricetag on a LV bag.

Odd numbers are seen as affordable, and a good bargain.

Your readers are somewhere in the middle — they want a good bargain, but a high quality book.

To create this balance:

Instead of the salesy 9, use other numbers. The advantage? You can go higher.

$10.53, or $11.77

If you absolutely need to stay under $10, you can go for $9.77, or $7.77.

I like to use a lot of 7 as many people are unconsciously drawn to it as a positive, lucky number.

The decoy price effect

This strategy is often used for:

• Online subscriptions

• Physical or digital product bundles

• In coffee shops

The decoy effect makes people change their minds when considering options if a third choice is added.

Ever wondered when browsing books on Amazon, who the hell buys all these overpriced hardcovers?

The answer is no one. They’re decoys.

If you give people 2 options:

• Ebook at $9.77

• Hardcover at $29.77

Some people buy the ebook. A ton of ready-buyers just scroll past because they want a physical book, but the hardcover is overpriced. So no sales.

But when you add a third choice:

• Ebook at $9.77

• Paperback at $13.77

• Hardcover at $29.77 (decoy)

Some people buy the ebook. More people buy the paperback. The perceived value of it immediately shoots up in the context.

You could also do:

• Ebook at $9.77

• Paperback at $15.00 (decoy)

• Paperback + downloadable bonus at $15.77

You drive most sales towards the highest price because it gives the most value.

If you feel uneasy about hacking people’s brain…

Everyone gets upset when a dolphin gets caught in fishing nets.

But the same thing happens to trillions of other fish every day. And we pay for it.

You’re selling books. They either help people or entertain them. The list of ways things could go unethical is very short.

To stay 100% fair:

• Make your book as objective, well-rounded, and wholesome as possible.

• If you’re giving advice, back everything up by evidence from expert sources, or by own authentic experience.

• Make your book well-written and compelling.

• Make all your bonuses and downloadables helpful and valuable.

• Be open to constructive feedback and potential edits.

When your book is high quality, it’s probably better than most of the rival books anyway.

And the hard work you’ve put into it has caused you some scars, too.

So you deserve maximum sales.

I’ve been watching Industry and although it makes me close to physically sick at times (actually, often) for multiple reasons, I gravitated towards the same sphere in this week’s niche research.

This niche is of course hugely popular, equally as nerve-wracking, and could be risky to get into, however right now there are two subcategory branches growing fast while still having relatively low competition. So you could get a nice slice of the popularity pie.

Also, if you already have a book in this niche, re-listing it in those subcategories could help it pick up traction faster, as there’s more opportunity close to the top.

You’ve published your first book and now it’s pressure.

You’ve done it! You check the book listing every two seconds and yes, it’s real. Next, you’re expecting the book to bring home fat royalties.

But the Amazon universe is vast. Your book is just a micro-speck swirling in the 30-day-boost storm. If you don’t design your book so it can build up strength, it will dissolve.

Maybe it’s already happening. Maybe your book has been live for some days, but it’s not making any sales.

Here’s the good news:

Amazon gives that 30-day boost to every brand new book, including yours.

Your job is to build the central skeletal parts to give it the maximum chance to fly.

If your book isn’t selling, here’s what you’re probably not doing (in 3 parts):

1. Your book’s communication essentials

Your book’s outfit communicates who she is to the world. This has 3 crucial parts:

• The book cover

• The book description

• The A+ content

Amazon will run ads for other books on your book description page. If you don’t maximize impact, your buyers will click away, intriqued by something more appealing. Don’t give them the chance:

The front cover is the first impression your book makes on people. It needs to stand out. If the majority of other book covers in your niche look samey, it’s a huge advantage.

Whether you work with a designer or are Canva’ing it yourself, get 3 or 4 variations. Then compare them to the rest in your niche, and under your top keywords, in search-result thumbnail size.

Is the book title easy to read? Does it POP at a 2-second glance?

Book description

Key elements of a book description that converts to sales:

• The description headline is a hook

• Bullet-point section that presents the key USPs

• It’s a journey — from pain points through solution hints (just hints-don’t give it away!), to a vision of a better future after the reader finishes your book and applies it to their life

• If you can, include authority references (research studies, a quote from a famous expert)

A+ content

This creates a whole another section on your book listing, maximizing the real-estate you can use to drive attention away from the advertised books and back to yours.

On KDP, you can create A+ content via the Marketing tab on your account. On your book listing, this appears as the “From the publisher” section. Here’s how to nail it:

• Take inspiration about what’s a good A+ look from a few succesful books in niche.

• Create your designs on Canva (free version is good enough). Use the same colours, design elements and fonts as the book cover.

• Reinforce the key solutions your book offers. Drive home how it’s relevant. Expand on key USPs.

Ideally, you’d have all these communication essentials ready before you publish. If you’ve already published, they’re easy enough to amend and add.

2. Plan your timing, and get the 3 categories right

Before you do anything else, get both your ebook and paperback formatting ready to go.

It’s easy to get impatient and publish your ebook while you’re still working on the paperback. This is a problem because:

• For your ebook to get the most possible attention from the boost, you’ll need to run at least 3 days of free promo

• The free promo of the ebook also lands you your first paperback sales

• If your paperback is not ready yet, this is a wasted opportunity

Always publish both formats at the same time. Then run a free ebook promo.

But first:

When you’re uploading your book to Amazon KDP, you get 3 category options to give your book a home.

Sadly, many new authors get these categories wrong, even with the best intentions. Making a mistake here is one of the most deadly, it can send your book to the Amazon graveyard faster than anything else.

3. Don’t start advertising too early

As soon as your book is published, reviews become its lifeblood, its pulse.

Social proof is extremely important to Amazon buyers, and book readers shopping there are no exception.

So what’s the key mistake here?

Running ads before you have reviews.

Advertising without reviews is sending most of your dollars on a journey — down the drain.

As soon as your book is published, and even before that if you can, focus on getting reviews first.

For me, the minimum is 15 reviews before I start any Amazon ad campaign, but often I put it off even longer, until I have around 30. That’s when things usually first start moving.

Most books have 3 review tresholds after which they experience a natural increase in sales — 30, 100, and a 1,000.

Once you hit the comma club (the 1,000 review club), your book has officially made it.

Is your book over 30 days old?

If your book is now nearing 30 days or older, and still not selling, don’t panic, this should still work.

Rewrite, redesign, amend, get reviews.

Get each of the above sections as close to perfection as you can. Work with your reader avatar. Work with any feedback you’ve had so far. Clarify:

• The pain points

• Your main USPs

• The desirable place the reader will reach after reading your book

Make sure you analyze and deconstruct the best categories for your book (never guess and never choose what just looks good).

Make sure you offer as much social proof as you can, as early as humanly possible.

Pause all ad campaigns if you have less than 15 reviews.

Together, this works to give your book the best chance for a healthy re-start.

Bottom line

If you’ve published a while ago, tried everything, and your book is still not selling, it may not be in a profitable niche.

This week’s niche is an evergreen and can offer fantastic results for a slightly lower effort; however it can be super tricky to get right, and so there’s also the danger your book could get buried under far too much competition.

The secret is in the categories, you need to be really careful and precise as to which one you pick.

There are many that sound incredibly lucrative on the surface but when you dive deeper you realize you could be easily swept over.

I found 3 categories within this niche that are growing faster at the moment while still having content gaps so let’s check them out together:

There are two kinds of online rabbit holes.

The ones you fall down and emerge on the other side covered in mud and self-doubt, with your head split in half.

Then there’s the other, super rare kind, which spits you out feeling like you’ve run through a super smelter. It’s made you into a machine. You will invent space tourism this year.

Seriously, who are you? I found myself asking midway through this particular rabbit hole.

The last thing I expect from Tiktok is to give me mind revamps. Yet this peak-fit guy with a nose strip is doing just that. Of course I’ve heard of Alex Hormozi before. But boy, hello? Are you like the Zeus of getting people off their sorry ass and moving their life and business forward?

3 hours of primary action a day

So, I was struggling to write my next book.

I just couldn’t move it. My brain wouldn’t have it, no matter the latest trick. I was sure it was late-summer lethargy.

(Plus my cat keeps escaping the garden, getting stuck in other people’s trees. I’m that anxious cat mum always running to his rescue = therefore newly acquainted with at least 3 neighbours and the local school in just one week.)

My mental capacity to create anything? Gone. Until:

“Just. Work. Harder.

Do 3 hours of primary action a day.

Work-smarter-not-harder doesn’t work unless you work hard first.”

I can confirm primary action moves the needle. I’ve “simply” just forced myself to do a few hours of it a day. I’m not joking when I say I’m now nearing the end of writing that book.

4 ways to let people know about your stuff

• Warm outreach — one on one, people who you know are already interested in your topic, staying in front of your existing audience

• Cold outreach — building campaigns and strategies to put yourself in front of strangers

• Being the type of marketer that works the best right now — a story marketer

• Creating awareness and exposure along with sales

I’ve always been scared of cold outreach, and I hate ads. And I was super passionate about both those feelings. How stupid, when again, I just needed to get over it.

Strangers don’t care about me. They care about what me and my products will do for them. And I can live with that, in fact I much prefer it. So my job is to put what they want in front of them.

My book ads used to just shout randomly. No wonder I hated them. Since I’ve killed those, and made some new ones that tell a mini solution-focused story, my click-through rate went up, with the best-performing ad at 46%. That’s huge.

Be one of zero

When you’re building pretty much anything:

Be one of many, and you’re so predictable people will forget you within the hour.

Be one of a few, and you’re building something that truly stands out, people love it, and you are proud of it.

Be one of zero, though, and you know you’ve done everything you could to max out your potential, and you see the proof in your earnings (and personal progress too).

The sad thing is, all three options are hard work. So many businesses that are one of many, are the materialization of their owner’s life’s work, yet they can barely make ends meet.

If you’re creating anything on the internet you know how stomach-churning it often is to:

• Be entirely dependant on, and exposed to, the response from your audience

• Be under pressure to stay consistent no matter what

Sometimes you put together 10 different drafts of something and still it doesn’t feel good enough. Yet you have hardly anything left to give.

And the problem is, once the algorithm (any algorithm) knows you’re a creator wanting to achieve something with your work, it barely ever shows you people in your niche who are “below” you in the algorithm.

When you go to the For you page for inspo, on any platform, you’re most likely shown 99% of creators who are much, much “higher”.

10x more views than you. 100x more engagement. You can tell they’re making more serious money.

This is all great as fuel and inspiration, but often it hits you the other way.

When this happens to me, I tend to do one thing that always bites me back…

Trying to inject someone else’s success into my content.

It goes like this:

You see specific things going viral for other people. I can do that, you think. And you create the same thing.

Same headline. Same bullet points. Same story. Same caption. Same hashtags.

And it flops.

They have 200,000 views. You get 200.

But now, it’s not just a low result. On top of it, you feel like an idiot. Because the piece is not you. So you hate it. Also, it’s a blatant copy. You hate that even more.

This whole philosophy I hear being thrown into the air often:

“The best artists are the best idea thiefs”

“Smart people copy smart people”

It’s never worked for me.

Stay inspired by smart people, but always throw your own unique twist in the mix.

And secondly!

What always bites me if I don’t do it, is preparation for…

Life itself.

No matter how on top of your creativity game you are, there are times when life will try, and succeed, to assassinate every spark of it.

My little sister is getting married in 2,5 weeks. Next week I’m on a plane over to be her maid of honour.

And what I’m starting to feel coming is the absolute inability to create anything. Anything at all. Life is about to switch my brain off and instead send my heart and my sanity into a frenzy.

When your online business is built on consistency, your projects have to be ready to survive that.

You need pocket content.

Right now I’m creating tons.

As I’ve painfully learned in the past - if I don’t keep a sufficient emergency content stash, my business is paying for it later.

So I’ve made it a habit to put a special emphasis on this.

You can take a girl out of Manhattan but you can’t take her out of her shoes.

(Does that even make sense? I don’t know. It’s already starting.)

First, it’s an idea. Then it’s a vision. Then it’s a plan.

It would be naive to assume it’s going to work.

My friend had an online course based on a trend. First year, he was flying. Then people moved on. The course is still live online, but it’s now pretty much just sitting there, dormant.

The problem is, one thing you can never safely predict is longevity. So you need to find as much stable ground as you possibly can, early on.

Also, do you want this badly enough to carry you through when times get tough? Because they will.

Every idea is just a theory.

Even if it’s the best idea you’ve ever had. Even if all your friends are raving about it saying they’ll buy it the minute it comes out. Even if there are other people who seem to be (or you know they are) making money with it.

Every online business venture is unique in so many ways. It’s you, and it’s your journey. Far too many factors are going to influence your results and your outcome compared to the person next to you, even if you are in the same field.

So before you go for it… Make peace with the following 3 truths:

• You can’t take what your friends say as proof. Go to your target market.

• It’s likely your first USP won’t be the USP to carry you all the way.

• You won’t be able to pay yourself a salary for (at least) a few months.

Unless your friends are (a passionate) part of your target market, take their feedback as encouragement to start proving your theory. But not to build. To build foundations based on just them being supportive could cost you dearly. Instead, take the time to investigate your target market. Then do a trial of something related but much smaller, to prove your theory works.

After that, your first idea and USP will bring you an audience, your first customers, your first turnover and revenue. But it probably won’t be the idea to give your business the runner’s legs. When your business evolves to its 2nd phase it will take on a new form. This is natural progress and it’s fantastic, it’s where the real excitement starts!

For the first few months at least, it’s all about feeding everything you get, back into the business. When you’re building systems, when you’re building content, when you’re working with other people to help you with things you can’t do yourself, you’ll always be the last to eat.

So when you’re planning:

Give yourself the time and the resources to accommodate all this.

Only ever allow yourself to count on one fact: It’s going to be unpredictable.

You’ll need thick skin. You’ll need to adapt. You’ll need to put the ego aside and be willing to listen to what your audience and customers want. Not what you think they want.

Learn to put yourself last for a time, both when you’re flying high and when you’re drained.

Freedom is built on sacrifice, that’s the evergreen truth.

But when you prepare yourself, and are willing to put up with that, and to not just hear hard truths but listen, you’re building longevity.

Your results will grow more and more exciting and your business will thrive.

Just probably not in the form you were expecting.
