I am in Johannesburg, South Africa for a Strategy Workshop , wherein participants from 10 African countries have arrived. It is going to be a 5 day affair with multiple sessions and learnings.

I call it “ Cross Pollination “ of ideas. Unique people , coming from different cultures, bring a lot to the table. There is so much to learn from their differences rather than their similarities.

A conference room brimming with voices, some familiar, some unfamiliar.

When you work on a project, having online meetings help u relate to individuals. Albeit, i strongly agree there is no replacement yet for a face to face connect.

When the speakers came in to speak, they always started with something unique to the country they represent. Because, one has to be proud of their roots and culture. That is the bedrock of what we have become today.

John from Nairobi, Kenya started with discussion about Wildlife Safaris and the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. How he grew up with such an interesting co-spacing with wildlife at his native town.

His eyes were full of sparkle when he spoke about this. And then the project related discussions kicked in. Numbers, charts, visio diagrams , problem statements, et al. Similar introductions came in from various representatives. All were interesting and helped move the conversations ahead!!

The point which i am trying to highlight is that at the end of the workshop, we had 34 unique ideas with an average of 3.4 ideas clocking in per country. The diversity of the nations, the cultures, the learning methods, the growing environment all adds to the delight. When people feel comfortable and proud with their uniqueness, they open up and show their true self. Give their best in that environment. Contribute fully to the cause at hand. And you can clearly see the difference in the quality of conversations which happen then !

Same is when we grow up. Gender adds to diversity. Language adds to diversity. Religions add to diversity. Many more elements add to the magic.

Whenever we have a meeting in office, i always encourage my team to challenge the existing mindset and bring in diverse ideas to the table. Each and every idea is important and needs to be studied in detail. Diversity in ideas is shaped truly by diversity in the individuals!

The hidden power of diversity makes 2 plus 2 equal to 22. Because the benefits are immense. The human capability is examined to the other end of spectrum if we are able to demonstrate diversity well!

To more of diversity! It is good at times to prove maths wrong….

Thanks for reading.. i just write what i feel…

Rgds, Kawal.

My people and others

Should we classify people ?

Heart to Heart Talks by Kawal

Over a period of time, as life moves, we move with life. Chalti na kaam Zindagi !!

As a human being, there is an inherent need to meet people, to share our experiences with them, to learn from their experiences. We are social animals. I am glad , animal word is being used for a human being ! We have to learn a lot from them !!

Step by step , time passes by , life moves on.

Sometimes we face happiness, sometimes sadness and sometimes extreme grief.

No one color can define well. All colours , all shades, we have to face during lifetime.

And when you are at your lowest ebb, you will find a handful of people standing with you. Sometimes, nil. Yes, Zero is the magic number here. 🥸

Even those people to whom you have shown kindness, have helped will vanish, as if you never existed.

This happens with many people.

All those who stand with you during your harsh times are your people ( someone told me ).

And those who vanish in thin air are others( again, someone told me ).

What life has taught me, no classification of people helps.

Whatever happens to us at that point of time in life ( good, bad, ugly ), it happens and will happen.

Labelling people as mine or others is not going to change any situation for better or worse.

The absence of labelling takes away a lot of load from our lives, which are already overburdened with expectations , truths and lies et al. It is like a blank canvas. I find blank canvasses so filled with calm and peace. Because mind doesnt wander. Thought remains where is is . There is no disturbance. No ripple in the lake of thoughts. It is pure bliss.

Maybe one cent of wisdom, take people as they are at that point of lives. Do not classify them as good or bad. Let them be what they are. Let us focus inwards on ourselves and how we can manage life better!

Pain is there, will be there tomorrow as well. Have we learnt the art of living and growing with pain ?

I leave this question to each one of you. Thanks for reading my 2nd article on substack. Counting numbers does help at times 😎😎 1.2….

The price of Being too caring!

It hurts!!

Heart to Heart Talks by Kawal

“Care “comes from the Old English noun caru or cearu, meaning sorrow, anxiety, grief, or trouble.

When we care for someone, we are trying to work on the above elements.

Caring is considered as a very positive quality.

Sharing is caring , also became very popular, implying that caring is to be looked in a good sense always.

HealthCare, Senior Citizen Care, Care Givers… many terms time and again lay emphasis that someone who is associated with caring is an elevated individual, with humanely qualities.

Yes, to care is a good thing to do ! To experience.

Caring does make you feel good, as you are able to execute some of the responsibilities as a human being through care.

But, as they say, whatever we do has a element of reaction to it.

When we care, we expect others to at least appreciate or maybe give a pat on the back. Expecting them to care in return is a bit far fetched expectation ( to be avoided, if we have to maintain our tranquility).

But when we just travel on that one sided road of care with just giving and giving, we become hollow from inside. A part of us is slowly taken away, somewhere, on a non-returnable path. An irreversible thing , which happens slowly, but surely.

Boundaries in caring are as important as with anything else on this universe.

Boundaries will give you some peace of mind , which can further be used for self-care.

Oh again, a care word, time to stop now.

All, do take good care of yourselves!
