You create a temporary perceived limitation 
as a way to call to you a certain quality of experience. 

There is a tendency to fall into the trap 
of identifying yourself with the constraints 
you have set up from your unlimited freedom.

You have created these lines upon the canvas freely
but imprison yourself when you identify with those lines. 

This is an illusion.
You can experience anything you want 
through all dimensions of creation."

The Way of Mastery 

You are not behind. 

If you are struggling 
to be understood or 
find clarity,

It's not because anything is wrong with you. 
It's just not yet time.

I was stuck trying to write the introduction for my 1st book.

I know the book is an offering from the soul of Corea* but I didn't know how to weave all the themes in a clear, cohesive way.

Mythic story, ancestry, shame, belonging,
and the power of blood and water.

Then I remembered how 9 years ago,
I began feeling the land of Corea
as my body...as our collective body. 


People didn’t even know what Corea was

(much less where)

when I was growing up.


“You’re from Corea? 

Is that a city in China?”


Back then, it was embarrassing 

to have stuff that was 

“Made in Korea.” 

It meant the item was cheap.

Now, being connected to Corea
is a status symbol. 

It's so surreal to see
kimchi in packages at Costco and 
fried seaweed sold like potato chips. 

All the “disgusting” foods 

kids made fun of me for 

now suddenly cool.

I don’t think it’s an accident that within my lifetime

Corea has become a global sensation,
while being one of the only countries still
technically at war with itself.

I believe Corea is a mirror for our 
personal and collective modern experience.

On the outside South Corea, like the US,
appears to be wealthy and powerful.

She is an unstoppable powerhouse-
cranking out pop idols, sports stars,
and award-winning films, dramas, and cell phones.

A machine that never stops expanding,
because she must keep striving
to stay relevant. 

While the North is closed and starving.

So traumatized by the past,
she has built a wall around herself 
to desperately maintain control 
and prevent further invasion.

Like many of our nervous systems. 

Either chasing perfection and status 
no matter the cost 

(South Corea has among the highest rates
of cosmetic surgery and suicides in the world),

or keeping one's self small to stay safe.

Both rooted in a feeling of separation-
from the earth
from our bodies
from each other. 

On both sides, the people are sick and dying.

But, what can we expect when our nations are built 
upon soil soaked with the blood of the innocent and unnamed?

Just as we repeat painful cycles
until our bodies heal from past trauma,
the buried histories of our nations must be
brought to light for our people to be restored to wholeness.

Nine years ago, I moved to Corea
with the intention of supporting women
to experience conscious conception.

Corea has the lowest birth rate in the world.

Most people simply cannot afford to have children and many women desire or are under pressure to achieve more in their careers. 

Of those that are trying, many struggle with infertility.

The path of fertility treatment, even when successful,
is often very stressful, expensive and depleting. 

But what if the root of the infertility
was not physical, 
but spiritual and emotional?

The fact that a woman is not getting pregnant
doesn't necessarily mean she is 
incapable of having children
without external measures.

The "infertility" could be her body's way
of indicating that it is time for 
another level of healing.

Through clearing foreign energies and 
ancestral, past life, and childhood trauma,
space may be made for the baby to easily incarnate.

I loved the idea of supporting women 
to experience conception as 
a gentle, self-healing journey if possible. 

So as soon as I arrived in Corea,
I made a video describing this offer. 

I excitedly shared the video with the only people I knew locally at the time:
my parents' friends, a sweet elderly couple.

They said it was good and immediately thought of 
several women they knew who were struggling with infertility.

But, I had used the word 무당 (shaman) and they suggested I edit that out before sharing the video with anyone else. 

"Don't use that word.
People won't take you seriously.

You're so pretty and smart and sweet.
You don't look like the type.
Don't ruin your reputation by talking about that."

They suggested I focus instead on the insights 
I'd gained through years of meditation,
the degrees I'd earned and all the programs 
and teachers I'd learned from. 

I understood their point.
But I wasn't interested in proving my credibility 
through these external measures.

To me, it was the spirt of the work that was
the most important. 

In the past, shamans were revered in Corea,
just like they are in all indigenous cultures.

They were respected as channels
and bridges to the divine and non-human worlds.

But, during times of internal conflict and colonization,
monks and shamans were relegated to a lower class.
Many were threatened, imprisoned and even killed.

They had to keep up their practices in hiding.
Like the witches of Europe.

I have always had trouble knowing 
what to call myself and how to describe what I do.

Pathfinder. Soul Guide.  
Psychic. Ancestral Healer.
Akashic Reader. Energy Worker. 
Spiritual Counselor.

Then I heard that "shaman" comes
from a Siberian word that means
'one who sees in the dark,'

(I've since heard that is an incorrect translation...)

This immediately resonated as 
I have always felt more at home in
the realm of the unseen, mystery, spirit
than in the material world.

But I hesitated to use that word
because of the images it conjures up
for most people...

An indigenous medicine man in the jungle.
Or in Corea: a woman in robes chanting 
and dancing on knives or sacrificing chickens.

Though shamanism is part of my ancestral heritage
(my great-grandmothers had shamanic gifts),
I have never been formally trained by 
a traditional shaman and claim no particular lineage.

Artist is the label that feels most comfortable and true,
but for most people, "artist" doesn't carry the spiritual
aspect that is present in all my work.

So I started to call myself an Artist Shaman.

But I'm not attached to what I'm called.
I just want to reach the people I'm here to help.
Or so I thought.

My parents' friends were Christian 
and they shared that most of their peers 
don't respect shamans.

They went on to say that they
were disappointed to learn of 
this spiritual side of me because
they had been excited to tell all their friends
about this bright, attractive young woman from America.

Now they were hesitant. 

Their words sparked a new conviction in me.

I thought of all the healers that 
were killed for their spiritual gifts.

And the ones who survived,
but had to live in hiding for fear of being hunted.

I thought of my great grandmothers
who repressed their talents for fear 
of being rejected by their families and becoming outcasts. 

Suddenly, I realized it was important to reclaim this word.

I am no longer willing to be an accomplice
in the devaluing of spirit,
in the separation between
heaven and earth.

Yes, I want to speak the language
that connects with those I am here to support.

But I will not dilute myself. 

I work to liberate people from the conditioning
and foreign noise that keeps us disconnected
from our true nature. 

How can I offer this if I cut off parts of myself
in order to be more acceptable,
more marketable?

I am an artist.
A shaman.
A witch.

My words are spells. 
I will not limit my own power
by swallowing the truth. 

SYNCHRONICITY!

I was reading Bill Plotkin's 
"The Journey of Soul Initiation."

He was writing about Carl Jung's soul initiation
and how it was catalyzed by his break from Freud, 
who had been Jung's good friend and mentor.

Jung was experiencing synchronicities and 
paranormal phenomena, but Freud 
dismissed all of this occult business as nonsense.

(The root of "occult" is "hidden, secret".... dark).

As Jung went deeper into his soul descent,
letting go of control and the social identity
he had thus far created, he felt compelled to share about his journey.

Jung knew that this would jeopardize his career and
that he would be ridiculed by the 
academic and psychological community.

Yet, it was only through risking everything
to follow his inner voice that he created the body of work 
that still helps so many people to this day.  

A few days later, I attended an herbal workshop called
"Myths & Medicines of the Goddess"
 led by Crystal Woodling.

I had taken an online course called Gaia
with Crystal a few years ago and was delighted
that she was offering something in person
at a local community garden.

It was a beautiful summer day,
and we all sat outside in a circle.

Most participants shared that they had come
to feel more connected to plants and nature.

I had come for that too,
but mainly I was there for Crystal 
and the Goddess. 

In addition to being a masterful herbalist,
Crystal shares my love of mythology
and creative expression. 

She began sharing about Willow, 
the World Tree.

Willow has a special place in my heart.

There was a weeping willow that I loved
in the front yard of my grandmother's house.

Corean poker cards are called 화투
or "flower cards" (which I also played with my grandmother).

Each number is represented by a different plant or flower.

My favorites are #8 (which highlights the moon)
and #12 which is called 비 "rain"
and connected with the willow.

In sharing about Willow,
Crystal dove into our shared cultural story,
including the rise of modern civilization 
and the ways we became separated from 
the Goddess, from the trees, from our bodies. 

She reminded me of the 
incredible power of myth
to shape our collective experience. 

I could have listened to her for hours!!!

I'm sure everyone enjoyed her rich storytelling,
but I think I was the only one familiar 
with most of the themes she was discussing. 

I walked away feeling so grateful 
that she had not diluted her stories
in an effort to be more relatable or understood by the general public. 

Don't dilute your message.

If people don't get you,
it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you.
Perhaps you are just ahead of your time.

And the ones who do get you
will be so grateful that you stayed true to your voice. 

Corea*- spelling before Japanese colonization

Luisah Teish once shared that in West Africa 
eclipses were seen as "the sun and moon making love,
leaving each other brighter than they were before."

I loved the idea that
instead of competing for power
or trying to eclipse one another,

we could come together in our diversity
to generate greater power and light for all.

Yesterday, I learned that Lisa See

would be speaking at a local book store

to promote her new work

“Daughters of the Sun & Moon."


At first, I was excited. How magical!

The title of her book is so similar to my own

and she’s an Asian-American author

whose books I’ve enjoyed... I even 

wrote a post inspired by “Peony in Love.”



But then, I felt worried and even resentful.

“She’s a famous Asian-American author.

Now, when I come out with my book,

it will seem like I copied her.”



“Even if my book becomes successful,

it will always get compared or mixed up with her book.”



“She’s already famous!

Why does she get to have this too?”



Basically- I was afraid that her creation 
would somehow take away from my own. 


I’ve been practicing acknowledging

and empathizing with my inner child,

so after initially judging myself for 

being petty and insecure,


I witnessed and validated my child’s thoughts:


I understand that you feel angry and afraid. 

You are scared that this book 
from a well-known author will 
somehow take away from your success.

You are afraid you will never be
seen and acknowledged
the way others are.

Like when you were in school and
the popular girls- who already
seemed to have everything you wanted-

received more and more favor 
while you were ignored,
and worse...rejected.

I know it seems like having what they have
will make you feel better. 

But what you are really hungry for is
your own self-acceptance. 

You are here to express and create
in your own unique way, no matter
what anyone else thinks or does.

You are here to live a mythic story
that only you can live. 

Let others have their stories,

and enjoy witnessing, celebrating

and learning from them.


Be inspired,
but don’t compare yourself. 


“The timing of your enlightenment, 
the timing of your healing, 
the way in which it occurs and the 
contexts necessary for you to be challenged 
by your own self will be uniquely your own.

That is why it is absolutely essential that you never 
compare your journey to another’s." (from The Way of Mastery)


There is no need to feel threatened.
No one can actually take anything away from you.


In fact, the world is on your side

and all is being given to you.

This is God winking at you...

“See, here’s a soulful writer you admire,

and who looks like you, making a living

doing what she was born to do.

This is possible for you, too.”

After having this conversation with myself,
I felt inspired to go to a book talk 
at a local dance studio.

The Sun & Moon Making Love"
begins with a dedication to my mother,
grandmothers, ancestors and the 
waters of life from which we are all born.

David Helvarg talked about kelp as the Mother Seed- 
a fertile source of diversity and abundance
that provides life for numerous sea creatures,
protects the coastlines from erosion,
and is a huge source of oxygen for the planet.

Because of warming seas,
kelp forests are now endangered.

David shared that South Corea* is the
only nation currently investing to
take the actions necessary to save the kelp. 

They've restored 50,000 acres of kelp forest!

I was so surprised and moved by this.

I felt the Soul of Corea guiding 
the healing of her waters.

At the book talk, we were asked to 
recall a personal story of water.

One of my favorite memories of the ocean
happened while I was in Corea.

When I was 21, I was exploring the country
and came across this random rocky coast.

It was freezing, but I was drawn to the water.
Suddenly, I was inundated with more texture
and colors than I had ever seen on any beach.

All different varieties of seaweed.
So much life and diversity.
So wild and beautiful. 

When I shared this with the author,
he replied "Yes, I've talked with Lisa See (!)
who wrote "The Island of Sea Women."

The female free divers of Corea 해녀 are the ones
who've been leading the charge
to protect the balance of life in their oceans,
as it is the basis of their livelihood.

해녀 (Sea Women) are mothers and daughters who
uphold a unique, matriarchal, centuries-old tradition 
of free diving for sea creatures to support their families. 

Women protecting the watery womb 
of Mother Earth, which sustains all of us.


Wow. Full circle.

Being able to love and serve the world
begins with my own love-making.

Looking at the ways I diminish myself 
and choosing to love those parts instead.

Every part of me, every experience

is part of the story I am here to live.

Every judgment that I forgive

grows my capacity to not only love myself more,

but to serve Life as I was born to do.

I’d prefer that I only felt inspired today.

I wanted to disown the part of me 
that felt insecure. 


But that’s not the kind of world I want to live in.

A world of half-truth.


I want a world that is big enough

and loving enough to hold all of it

with tenderness and understanding. 

* Corea- spelling of Korea before Japanese colonization. I choose this spelling to represent the Soul of Corea which can never be colonized or divided.

Sometimes I have wondered if I’m a narcissist.


I spend a lot of timing reflecting on myself.



My ego goes between extremes of 

“I’m so blessed and special.”

to “What’s wrong with me?

How come I can’t make my life work?”


I don’t really want to be

anyone else,

but I often envy others’ results.



I do my best to be authentic but

some part of me still believes

that if I were to truly be myself,

without any of the pleasing masks-

I would be alone. 



Last week “out of nowhere,”

a video about  Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)

came up on my youtube feed.



I watched 2 videos of people

diagnosed with NPD talking to therapists.



I was struck by how both of them

vehemently despised their younger, vulnerable selves, 

describing them as “pathetic” and “disgusting.”

And then I realized—
this is exactly how I had heard people with NPD
talk about their past selves.



In one of the videos, a therapist asks the client:

“Did anyone care about you

when you were little?”



“No. 

And I don’t think anyone cares about me now.”



When I was little, I also felt 

that no one cared about me. 



I wanted parents who asked me how my day was,

helped me with my homework,

read bedtime stories and said things like: 


“I’m so proud of you” or

“You are beautiful to me”

Like my white friends’ parents 

and the families I saw on  TV.



Once the bullying at school started,

I also longed for someone to defend, protect,

and comfort me. 



In the “Sun & Moon Making Love” story,

the moon’s heart becomes so heavy  

with shame and loneliness,

that she falls from the sky and sinks into Mother Earth.

The moon feels abandoned, betrayed and alone.

She wants to disappear,

but she has nowhere to go.



She spends days and nights crying and 

feeling sorry for herself.

Through it all, the Earth just holds the moon silently,

adding her tears to her bloodstream (the oceans).



This is where I am.
Both Daughter Moon and Mother Earth.
Learning to stay and be held,
and learning to hold without judgment. 



My younger self was a hurt child.

One who was rejected and humiliated, again and again.

She tried to receive love and

positive attention in any way she could. 



Judging her as weak and pathetic

for having needs and trying to find ways to meet them… 



This is not how I want 

to show up for myself.

But, it felt so overwhelming to try to comfort my child self.

I had no idea how I was going to “heal” all this.



How do I re-create so many memories?

How do I imagine stepping in to protect

this child with so many small, daily hurts?



The task felt too big.



(Example: 

Boys that year teased me by calling me “Karate Kid”

I hated it.

One day I write that my “best friend” says

“She doesn’t do Karate    (my young heart lifts with hope, omg she’s sticking up for me! )

she does Kung-Fu.”          ( stab in the chesr )



But, what if it didn’t have to be a burden?

Something I had to do?  



What if I could just take it day by day

and be with her?

I am working on completing my first book

“The Sun & Moon Making Love”

that tells of the moon’s journey

from shame and not belonging to 

coming home to her true nature.



It is the first creation myth of the trilogy,

Timeless Stories for the End of Time.


The book will include personal essays and art 

that reveal how the story

mirrors my actual life- 

and how it can be used as a map for others. 



I actually haven’t been actively

working on the book.



Since returning from the Great Mother March,

I have felt purposeless and lost.

Uninspired.

Not only accepting the 
productive, shiny parts but
the low, lonely, lost parts too. 

The parts of me that need the most attention and love. 


After the moon falls to earth, 
she wants to disappear-
change her circumstances,
but she has nowhere to go.

She has no choice but to stay 
“cradled in the arms of her mother”
where there's nothing to do,
but FEEL.

If you also feel like you’re in some kind of void,

may you allow yourself to be held,

trusting that you are being awakened

by a force greater than yourself.

No matter what you may be
feeling or doing (or not doing)...

Do not doubt your value.
The world is incomplete without you.

As with most spiritual journeys,
that intention manifested in ways totally different 
than what I had imagined.

I had pictured myself walking in bliss...
Inspired and deeply connected
to the people I was journeying with and 
meeting along the path.

My mind clear and calm, 
my body stronger and healthier than ever
from spending my waking hours walking,
and sleeping every night directly upon Mother Gaia.

Instead, I spent a good deal of the time
doubting and judging myself.

After walking 17 miles the 1st day,
I woke up the next morning excited to continue.
But my right knee began aching
and I was only able to limp.

I thought I'd recover quickly.
At home, I usually walk for over an hour a day
and it had never caused physical distress.

(Though the last and only time I'd done 
something comparable to this march,
I'd joined a friend on her cross-country biking trip. 

I had never biked for more than a few miles at a time before,
and we were biking 20-30 miles a day.

After about a week,
my knee began hurting.)

I was wrong.
I ended up spending most of the march
in a car supporting others who were walking.

I found myself wondering what I was doing there.

Yes, I was helping people by storing gear in my car,
and giving rides here and there, but...

I felt like I was failing because I wasn't walking.
I felt ashamed that I couldn't function
as I'd expected.

"What am I doing here if my body is unable to walk?"

"If only I had walked less the first day...
I ruined the whole experience. "

When I'd remind myself of the value that
others who were not walking were providing,
my mind would say

"Sure, but they're doing more to support the others."
Even as a "support vehicle," I felt like I was failing.

I judged myself for not feeling more connected.
"If only I were more social, 
and didn't get overwhelmed so easily..."

I repeatedly had to remind myself
this journey had never been about
walking a certain number of miles,
proving my worth to others,
or reaching an ideal state of being.

It was about embodying love,
which is already all that we are.
It was about remembering 
and choosing the Truth.

So, how perfect that I was given 
countless opportunities to practice :)

I picked a word from a bag of hearts
that my friend Marty created,
every day of the pilgrimage.

COMPASSION came up over and over. 

This internal turmoil continued when I returned home.

I felt more lost than ever.
Tired and uninspired. 
I worried that I was becoming depressed
and more and more dysfunctional.

But then I remembered.
The intention to embody Love
will bring up anything that is 
untrue.... all our fears and judgments.

I'm still in the midst of that purification.

Space is being made,
but what Love is creating
beyond the old stories
has not yet been birthed.

Maybe you are also feeling untethered,
facing the unknown.

You are not alone.
It is not yet time to understand
or figure out a next step.

It is time to be gentle.
To deepen our trust in the power of Love,
and allow it to transform us from the inside out.

I'm preparing to embark on a 500-mile pilgrimage
from Asheville to Washington DC
to spread seeds of love 
beginning on the Spring Equinox 3/21.

For a long time, I have been asking God
what is mine to do in the wake of all
the darkness that is happening in our world.

I usually get the message to continue to 
hold space for my own healing and 
those that come to me for support. 

This made sense, as I understand
that a peaceful world begins with
each one of us cultivating peace within ourselves.

But, when I learned about the Great Mother March,
I felt something powerful stir within me
and immediately felt called to participate.

Though I've always wanted to go on an 
extended spiritual pilgrimage,
I've never done anything like this before,
and am both nervous and excited.

There are a lot of unknowns
and I'm trusting that the intention
to embody and spread love is enough.

Before I head out to begin the journey, 
I'm offering a performance ritual
for the local community to 
connect to the Soul of Corea*
and together rise to our sacred destiny.

On Sunday, 3/15 I'll be performing  
"The Sun & Moon Making Love"-
the 1st origin myth of the trilogy
Timeless Stories for the End of Time.

These myths are inspired by pansori,
an ancient Corean storytelling art form
rooted in shamanism.

The stories call us to return
to our original nature as divine, powerful beings
in union with all of Life-
before colonization and division.

In particular, "The Sun & Moon Making Love"
tells of the moon's journey from shame
and not belonging to unconditional love. 

It is time for each of us to remember that
the world is incomplete without us.

I want to leave some surprises,
but you can expect sound healing,
guided self-reflection, 
connection with like-minded souls, 
and oracle cards!

I haven't performed locally in over 10 years,
so it feels special to connect with new and old friends
in person, at this time, at this place.

Willow Grove is a new addition 
of the Sandy Spring Museum and was 
specifically created to support art
that preserves our cultural heritage.

Sandy Spring was a hub of the Underground Railroad- 
and the land still carries this spirit of resistance and liberation.

my heart to greater community. 

It is time for all of us to rise to our sacred destiny,
and we're not meant to do it alone.

Back then, I was working at my family's 
new food business while taking
commercial real estate classes. 

We were living in a 1 BR apartment
together in the building next to the store.  

My mom was miserable 
as she had just broken her knee
(followed by lots of complications)
and was stuck in the apartment all day
with her leg propped up.

It was the 1st time she'd ever 
been physically incapacitated.

My father, brother and I 
all worked day and night to 
cover the store.

I was also preparing to interview
at commercial real estate firms
while studying for the LSATs , 

(thinking if I got a law degree
it would give me a leg up in the 
male dominated industry
I really wasn't excited to enter.)

In the meantime,
every night after the store closed,
I would set up my paints and canvas 
and use the business as my temporary studio.

It was a way to have some space
and stay connected to myself,
though pretty inconvenient.

(The store didn't close till 9 pm 
and I had to have the place spotless
before we opened the next morning at dawn-
which is not easy for a sloppy painter. )

One day, a customer (who always
bought blunt wrappers from us)
told me he lived nearby and had an old shed
I could use as an art studio.

I loved this idea and began
hanging out and getting high 
with him and his roommates
at the shed, while also painting.

I also met 2 customers 
who lived in the same 
apartment building as I did.

After work, instead of painting
or spending time with my family, 
I'd sometimes get high and watch anime
with them at their place. 

I ended up getting physically
intimate with a handful of these
guys that I really did not find attractive
or respect as romantic partners. 

One day I connected with an old friend I
hadn't seen in awhile.
When I told her about my career plans
she was like "You're going to WHAT????"

(She was also an artist and free spirit ).

I suddenly heard how preposterous 
it sounded... for someone like me to be 
getting a law degree and working
at a commercial brokerage firm in DC?!

Sure, I could do it. 
If I FORCED myself. 
But it was obviously NOT what any 
part of me actually wanted to do-

Except the one that had been trained to 
focus on fear and survival and prioritize
making money above all else.

I decided right then to apply 
to art school instead. 

That it would be better to go all in 
for something I was passionate about
and see where it went, 
then move forward with something
I had no true interest (other than financial) in.

I was afraid of becoming a starving artist
but during my time at the store, 
I'd noticed a pattern.

Our customers were mostly young, 
affluent professionals - and
none of them seemed very happy.

Most of them came to our store to
buy good beer and food, 
then go home alone to unwind 
before facing another day at a job
they weren't into. 

Many of them seemed envious of the lifestyle
that my brother and I had- 
which I guess seemed more free. 

I ended up getting a loan 
for SCAD's graduate painting program
(later I dropped out- but that's another story).

During this time, 
I also lost a huge chunk of my hair
and learned that I had Hepatitis C,
a life threatening blood disease 
that was considered difficult to cure
at the time and often compared to AIDs.

Looking back, I could see that I 
actually had been going through a lot,
with no healthy support system. 

(that one enlightening interaction 
with an old friend was an anomaly.)

There was no one that I was 
talking to about my diagnosis,
confusion about my path,
fears around money, health, 
or personal fulfillment.

NO TRUE CONNECTION.

Suddenly it made more sense
why I might have wanted to check out,
and seek relief and comfort 
from drugs and sexual attention. 

I was finally able to have some
compassion for this young lonely part of myself, 
and move beyond the shame and disgust. 

Witnessing the extreme injustice in the world
that so many have been suffering from- for so long-
I feel so disgusted and angry.

I have trouble seeing the
perpetrators and pawns as
innocent and divine children of Mother Earth.

I label and dehumanize people,
in the same way I reacted to  
overt racism and sexism as a girl.

When I do this,
I am allowing myself to be infected
by the same limited thinking 
that I am judging in the ones
who are causing harm.

I don't want to do this.
I know something needs to change.

Inside me 
as much as outside. 

In my work, I help people move beyond
the self-division and harm that is caused
by unresolved past-life trauma and 
inherited ancestral beliefs.   

I know that a world of peace
can only come when individuals
heal the divide within.

And yet, I keep feeling called to do 
something more.

I wasn't sure what,
but this feels like one right next step:
The Great Mother March

A pilgrimage from Asheville to DC
to seed positive change
and embody the love that 
can transform what minds cannot. 

I've always wanted to (and still do)
walk the Camino in Spain
as a personal pilgrimage.

But somehow, doing this walk
in the divided country I live in,
not as an inner, solo journey-
but as a community ritual/ awakening/ movement
of love feels even more powerful.

 * With this painting, 
I was trying to go beyond the
division I kept experiencing:

I could either feel free to be myself, 
but be alone-
or be connected with another,
and lose myself.

I'm ready to experience
the truth:
that real freedom comes through connection.

And no one is truly free
until we are all free.

It is safe to do less.
In fact, you need do nothing.

Because you are an infinite being,
you lack nothing.

Because you lack nothing, 
There is nothing you need.

This is true wealth.
Knowing you are 
already whole and complete.

So whatever you do
arises out of desire,
versus a sense of obligation.

Are you afraid of running out of time?

Do you compare yourself to others
and judge yourself for being behind
 
Instead of appreciating the path
your soul has chosen, in sync
with your body's unique rhythm?

and then we race towards death.
And no one wins.

Because we value youth over age.
But we also value experience and status
over innocence and wonder.

So when you're young,
you don't feel like you're enough
because you haven't yet proven yourself.

And when you're old,
you don't feel like you're enough
because you're no longer "youthful."

Life is not something to get through-
A series of stages to complete
so your “real life” can finally begin

when you get 
   the partner
         the money
              the space
                    the fame.


Life is cyclical and
every season is beautiful...

The dark and stark of winter
for the clarity it brings

The bounty and sweet of summer
for its fervent offerings.

You are infinite.
Out of everything you could experience,
you chose the very life you're living.

You are so vast,
your story could never be contained
by this one life,

So let go of trying
to pack everything in,
and let go of your fear of 
missing out on anything.

You don't need to do a thing.

You are here to enjoy
creating a precious work of art 
called your life
and to savor each moment
of its unfolding.

The more present you are
with your current life,
just as it is,
the richer your experience.

I constantly need to remind
myself of who I really am

as I continue to feel fear
arise anytime I am aware
of someone in distress (which is all the time!).

I need to catch myself so 
I don't go into the pattern
of trying to fix or change something
out of a sense of duty 

or because my worth is dependent
on making everyone feel better.

Compassion and support
is only real when love for myself
is included in the equation.

Service coming from
a sense of self sacrifice
or worthlessness
is not loving because it is not true.

It is fear based.

It is safe to just be who you are. 

WHO YOU ARE
IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.

Your life has its own 
UNIQUE BEAUTY, 
JUSTAS IT IS.

I was taught to keep myself small
to not make others uncomfortable.

To keep parts of myself hidden 
To stay safe.
To be acceptable.

As a woman, 
you're allowed to be pretty,
but don't be too confident 
and fully own your beauty.

That's lacking humility.

You can be sexy and enticing,
but don't be wildly erotic
because untamed life force is threatening.

You can be generous and over-giving
but not rich and self-satisfied,
because that is greedy and unfeminine.

You can be the best listener and 
non-violent communicator
but don't be too smart or outspoken
because then you're attention seeking.

Sigh. It's so exhausting to try 
to be the perfect woman.

Always afraid of being too much
and not enough at the same time.

I am done trying to perform
this impossible task.

My ancestors truly had to hide
to survive.

But now, if we continue
to dim our light,
it's the world that 
won't survive.

It is no longer ok to sleep
within the illusions of time,
limitation and suffering.

We must awaken
to our vast infinite being.

To embrace our great responsibility 
to stand as Love
in the face of tyranny. 

It is time to remember
who we were born to be.

To light up the 
darkness of this world
with our unique brilliance.

To claim our majesty.

In PEARL, we will break the spell
that has been keeping us small. 

Our ancestors survived
so that we could have this life.

So that we could be born 
in a time when it was safe to shine.

It is time for you to SHINE.

We all know how futile
it can be to try to change our parents.

Maybe, like me, you've tried your best

I am a divine artist,

Even though I know this to be true,

I find myself feeling anxious. 

It doesn’t feel safe to do “nothing.”



To allow life to have its way with me

instead of attempting to control so much.



It requires a level of trust that feels 

very vulnerable and scary.



Yet I feel this is what so many of us

are being asked to step into…

this new way of BEING,

in which we ALLOW ourselves to 

be shaped and moved by life.

By my soul, not anything outside of me- 

though it sometimes feels that way to my human mind.



Just after sharing Teenah’s story, and how her death

was connected to infanticide in our ancestry,

I was reflecting on past lives in which I was a baby

who was killed, drowned in the river, 

because I was a girl.

Those aspects of me of course felt

completely rejected and abandoned.



But I was shown that all of my mothers

had loved me deeply. 

They did not throw me away because

I was not worthy of life,

but because they knew I was precious.

They were making the ultimate sacrifice-

letting go of one they loved dearly,

to protect me from the pain and cruelty

that I would ultimately suffer

if I grew to be a woman in their culture.



These mothers felt the grief, guilt and shame

of that decision for the rest of their lives.

Wildly, yesterday (just a day after these reflections)

a totally different perspective

was brought to light

through a session with a beloved client…



A past life in which she had been a mother

whose teenage son had been murdered 

because of their socio-economic class.



She was understandably filled with grief and rage,

but underneath was a deep sense of shame.


She believed the death of her son was her fault.

That she had been selfish to bring her son into this world, 

knowing she was of a “lower” class and

couldn’t protect him from the culture’s divisiveness. 



She thought, "If only I had aborted or 

killed him as a baby,

he wouldn’t have suffered as he did."

Do you see how it makes no sense to judge

ourselves for our decisions?



Whether the mother killed the baby, 

or allowed him to grow

only to be killed by another,

this woman was going to suffer intensely.



Her soul chose to experience this level of 

pain and loss in that lifetime.



No matter what choice she made, she was going to face this.

Because as tragic as it is for the human, 

the soul is here for the experience.



And we don’t know the greater story.

Perhaps from the suffering she endured, 

this woman goes on in future lives

to start a revolution thaat brings greater justice and equality to the world.



The life you are destined for is not something 

outside of you that you have to reach or 

figure out or work hard for.

Trust your life,

even when it’s painful and disappointing and confusing.

For it is part of a legendary story

that your source is masterfully creating.



If we get curious- instead of judging ourselves-

 when we feel stuck or notice repeating patterns 

that don’t make sense,

they can guide us to heal our ancestors 

and other lives we have lived…



Like a beautiful puzzle or treasure hunt

that reveals how vast and intricate life actually is.

Teenah.
My sweet little cousin.
My spirit guide.

Though I was not close to her in life,
When I was 28, her soul came to me.

I was going through a spiritual awakening,
while receiving ozone treatment for Hepatitis C, 
a blood disease.

To understand who she is to me,
I have to share more about my family.

Starting with my mother,
Which actually means starting with my grandmother,
Which actually means starting with my great-grandmother.

My great-grandmother left 
her baby girl to move to a foreign land
and pursue a career for herself.

Raised by her father and distant step-mother,
my grandmother did not know maternal love.

When she grew to be an adult, 
she had no intention of getting married or becoming a mother.
She wanted to be a singer.

Instead, she got married and had 8 children!
All sons, except my mother.
My mom was the 2nd eldest. 

Back then in Korea, 
the eldest son was responsible for 
eventually leading the family and 
carrying on the ancestral line, 
through having sons of his own.

(It was often said that if my mom had been born the eldest son,
our family’s destiny would have turned out very differently.)

After my mom was born, to be safe from war
the family moved to a small village in the country, 
tucked away in the mountains. 

It kept them alive,
but drove my grandmother crazy.

She had grown up in a cosmopolitan coastal town
that had been famous in its time for its mineral springs
and modern amenities like electricity. 

This poor village had no electricity or running water.
She felt suffocated every time 
she saw the dark mountains looming above her

and constantly complained about the bland peasant food
and uneducated people that surrounded her.

(She also worked tirelessly to take care of her family
And generously gave to those who had less than they.)

My grandfather was (ironically) a women’s doctor.
He was stern and had a violent temper
And when his voice would thunder,
my grandmother would tremble.

Several times, she tried to run away 
but my grandfather would always find her and bring her back. 

My grandmother suffered from insomnia and 
was diagnosed with “hysteria.”

My mother and uncles all remember her
As completely lacking in maternal warmth. 
Cold, strict and severe.

But my mother says she never felt resentment.
Just pity.

When my mother 1st left her mother’s home,
Instead of going to college,
She decided to support her older brother.

She lived with him and took care of all the domestic chores
while he opened up his own pharmacy in Seoul.

He was very intelligent and talented...
philosophical, musical, and passionate. 

Eventually,  he got married 
(had another woman to serve him)

so my mother moved to another home 
only to take care of her younger brothers 
while they went to school...

which her father praised her for- 
"What a good sister and daughter."

Finally, my mother married my father, 
who had big dreams to elevate his career
by receiving education in the US,

with a woman beside him to guess what....
support and serve him! 

They emigrated to the US.
saying farewell to all their family members,
ready to start an entirely new life together.

(My grandmother’s only daughter left her to 
pursue a new life in a foreign land,
just as her mother had done.)

After a year or so of living the immigrant life,
tired and poor, but happy,

My father asked my mother
if there was anything more she wanted.
She confessed how much she missed her family.

So my dad (what a baller!)
somehow obtained visas for her parents and brothers
and they all moved to the US,
into the house of my parents.

My father taught them how to drive,
speak enough English to survive,
got them jobs and everyone thrived,

All eventually becoming successful 
business owners themselves.

Except for the eldest uncle, 
He had a hard time.

It seemed his big heart and mind
just wasn’t cut out for the very limited role
this new country offered.

For in this country, 
For him, for an immigrant

There were no friends,
No lively philosophical discussions,
No parties with jazz and intellectual conversation.

He had family, yes
but his brothers didn’t look up to him
and he had failed the most important job:

He had no sons,
only 3 daughters. 

The eldest was beautiful and strong,
the middle smart and kind,
and the third charming and athletic.

But still, they were only girls.

So, he drank.
Became abusive. 

But years later, my aunt became 
unexpectedly pregnant again.
At last, the miracle that would change everything!
The long awaited son!

But alas...another girl. 
And she was different from the rest.
Teenah was not pretty or smart or charming. 
She was…awkward.

Even her name: Teenah. 

The older sisters, like every other cousin
had the same first syllable as 
my grandmother's name 우재순 
Jae 재- "to be, exist, rest in."

(My Korean name is Jae-In 재 인 : Jane)

Jae-Hyung 재 형

Teenah grew up lonely.
With a large age gap from her siblings,
mostly home alone with a depressed mother
and violently unhappy father.

But, at 18 she was free 
to leave and go to college!

And there, away from home,
Teenah finally began to blossom.

She made good friends, 
discovered her talents, 
began to feel at home in herself.

Her first year, she lived in a boarding house
with a few other girls.
The next year, she was ready to
move onto campus and live in a dorm.

But the boarding house mother
who loved her said, 
“Stay with us one more year,”
and Teenah said yes.

All was well, until one day, 
a knock came on the door.

The boarding house mother told all the girls 
“Go upstairs, and don’t come down until I say so.”

But, Teenah heard screams 
and ran down to find 
a man beating the woman
who was like her 2nd mother. 

And then he turned around and struck Teenah. 
Over and over
until she died.

(He was the boarding house mother’s son.
He had escaped from a mental institution).

I was living in Korea when I heard about Teenah’s death.
I didn’t go to her funeral.
I didn’t really process what happened.
None of us could believe it.

But years later, 
when I slowed down enough
to hear the voices of the unseen,

Teenah's spirit revealed that her death
had not been a freak accident
but a restoration of balance.

Her murder by a boy who killed his own mother 
mirrored deaths that had happened early on in our ancestry-

Babies that had been killed by their own mothers
because they were girls who society did not value. 

Teenah showed me that life has a divine order,
that often can’t be seen through the lens
of one lifetime.

She was not a victim but an infinite soul 
who had chosen this death as part of her destiny  
which includes healing this pattern
of devaluing girls and women.

And also the hurt in boys and men
who grow up without loving mothers,
and collapse under the pressure 
that society places upon their already bent shoulders.

Together we are healing this wound 
that goes much deeper and wider 
than a personal disconnection 
from our biological mothers.

Across the world, 
for countless generations
we have become severed
from our birthright 
as beloved children of Earth:

The safety, the belonging, 
the inherent sense of self-worth.

We have been confused.
We have been lied to.

Made to believe we must 
earn our right to live,

because we were born the wrong sex,
In the wrong skin, 
in the wrong country,
In the wrong social class,
In the wrong family.

NO!
You are a perfect creation
In the perfect body
In the perfect time and place
and the perfect circumstances
to express the divine destiny
that can only be lived as and through you.

You are safe.
You are worthy.
You belong.

Your true origin is found
in the unconditional love that Mother Earth 
has for each and every one of us.

A few months ago,

I met a modern day heroine

on the (British) Virgin Islands.

Her name is Britnie. 


When Britnie was twelve years old,

she saw a girl on the screen

who looked just like her


but instead of playing

and being safe at home

her body was being raped and sold. 



Britnie’s heart broke in that instant

and she made a commitment

to stop this from happening

to any other children.



She joined missionary groups and travelled the world

to help the victims of this abuse. 

But, it never felt like enough.


Facing so much injustice,

Britnie became more and more angry.

She wanted to kick down doors and 

stop every perpetrator in their tracks.



Instead, God told her to make money. 

For a major root of sex-trafficking is extreme poverty.


Parents are not selling their kids 

because they don’t love them, 

but because they are trapped in a dead-end system.

 

Britnie became a real estate mogul

and even bought her own island!

But she didn’t really understand how

this was supporting her sacred mission. 



Then she married a veteran 

and through supporting her husband

to heal from PTSD,

they developed a program to help others do the same.



These healed men & women  

became an army of light

who now go on missions to

liberate abused children. 



Britnie also holds retreats on the island 

supporting others to live their unique visions

so that collectively we might solve the world’s problems.


Last Easter, the day of Resurrection,

Tony & I found ourselves on this sacred island.


The spirit of the land had called to me,

in the form of an invitation to a book-writing retreat.


Though we were both afraid

because of the cost,

we took the leap. 

I intended to complete the book,

"Timeless Stories for the End of Time,"

a collection of art & stories

to awaken people to their divine destiny. 


Tony wished for clarity, a vision for a new business 

(he had recently been forced into early retirement 

after 23 years of working for the federal government).



I also wished for a miracle in our relationship,

that we might finally move beyond any fears

that were keeping us (me) from total commitment.



But, instead of feeling more in love,

I fell into even more doubt.

I hardly did any writing

and did not feel any special connection with the island.
 

On our last day, I heard God say 

"Receive your own medicine."


So I told myself one of my own stories,

"The Sun & Moon Making Love"

and asked Tony if he would record it.*

As I recited the words I knew so well,

it immediately started raining.

At first it was a sprinkle,

but then it became torrential.



The sky was perfectly reflecting

the frustration and sadness I was feeling. 

As well as the story itself,

in which the Moon feels purposeless and ashamed.


She falls from the sky and cries in despair

while the Earth holds her tenderly 

 “adding the Moon’s tears to her bloodstream.”



Singing a lullaby which 

eventually awakens the Moon

to her unique beauty and significance.



When the Moon remembers the truth of who she is,

she reclaims her place in the sky

to fulfill her destiny: 


To light up the world with the Sun,

“who has been waiting patiently all 

these years just for her to turn and face him"

by honoring her own reflection.

As I said these lines, 

the rain totally stopped

and the sun blazed forth.



And I could not help but think of Tony,

how patiently he has been waiting

all these years for me to love myself enough 

to accept his love for me.


And the vision that had come through him:

for us to create artful films together

that share the stories of soulful entrepreneurs.


We had unintentionally just created the 1st one!

No matter how confused or sad

or doubtful you may feel at times,

you belong in this world.


You belong to your life.


Your life, just as it is,

is the perfect orchestration

for your unique awakening. 


You do not need to feel successful,

or impactful or even 

be able to name your purpose

to already be living it. 

The world is incomplete without you.

Please stop doubting your significance.

Do whatever sets your heart on fire. 

And if you do not yet know what that is,

just fully embrace what is right in front of you.



Know that the actions you take,

however seemingly big or small

will creates ripples

that bring much needed warmth

to the cold, dark places of this world. 
 

*  We had not planned on "working" during this trip
so Tony had no tripod, lights or a proper mic.

I had no costume prepared,
but put together a bodysuit, scarf,
& resort-provided-robe.

I picked a nice spot just outside the room we were staying in. 
When it started pouring rain I could barely keep my eyes open.

We only had time to do one take.

But with Tony's hand-held camera skills
and Mother Earth's intervention,
something beautiful was created. 

We don't need to wait for perfection.

Thank you. 

I am battling bouts of hopelessness…
With so many suffering, 
what can I possibly do to change the course of things?

The systems of oppression 
from which all the violence springs
feel too big, too ingrained.

I am no savior.
At least not alone.
But what if I’m part of a huge team?

And my only job is to fulfill
my unique role wholeheartedly.

To not allow the magnitude of the world’s problems
to stop me from fulfilling
the simple task in front of me:

To stay connected to my desire.

Which expresses through my creativity,
the same life force which
sustains and rebirths all things

To remember the inherent innocence 
of all beings, especially the ones
that appear most vile

so that I don’t end up perpetuating the division
that is breaking apart our world. 

For it is well known that Hitler 
desired to be an artist.

So too Kim-Jong Il
the North Korean dictator
who was much crueler than his predecessor. 

Extreme illustrations
of what could happen to any human when 
our natural desires are thwarted & imprisoned?

I envision Rainbow Resurrection. 
A renaissance of humanity born
through this storm of chaos and uncertainty.

A world in which all beings,
in all our diverse and unique beauty,
live in harmony.

I know it may sound impossible and naive,
but I live by these words from Henry Moore

(a sculptor who was ridiculed for his “ugly” creations

Did Mary Magdalene know that 
thousands of years after 
being labeled a whore that 

her spirit would inspire millions of women
to reclaim the power of the Divine Feminine?

(Perhaps she did as she was a seer :)

From our limited human perspective,
we will never know the effects of what we do.
And it can all feel pointless.

But, sometimes, we are gifted with a story
that reminds us of our inherent glory.
