I keep thinking maybe I’ll delete my older posts so there won’t be proof of previous failure, but that doesn’t feel right either. In the years since abandoning this blog I’ve ended a ten year relationship/marriage, moved to New York City, gotten completely sober, and written a book about being a woman in the restaurant industry that I’m currently seeking a literary agent for. My life feels so radically different than it did in 2019, but the fundamental things remain the same. An obsession with reading, writing, and authoring my own story continues to consume me.

I continue to do the Bradbury Challenge, where I (attempt to) read a piece of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction every single day. It’s some kind of magical bibliomancy, to participate in a practice like that every day. The books I read speak to each other in ways that feel so serendipitous, yet there’s no way I could have been aware of the patterns prior to picking the books. At the end of a collection of short stories called Portalmania, Debbie Urbanski writes in her story notes about a book on childhood development. Less than a week later, the same random book is referenced in The Collected Schizophrenias by Esme Weijun Wang. I read the first page of Eve Babitz’s Sex and Rage before deciding on a different book to take on a trip to Rosarito, Mexico. The main character is named Jacaranda, and when I’m in San Diego on my way to Mexico and seeing Jacaranda trees in bloom everywhere I go, I decide I’ll read that next when I get home, a little secret sign I tell no one about and barely register in my conscious mind. Halfway through Sex & Rage, the main character decides to take a trip to Rosarito, Mexico. I can’t make this shit up, and I don’t know what it means. Probably nothing, but it makes me feel like I’m in the right place at the right time, even when everything in my life feels like it’s going wrong.

It doesn’t always feel wrong, but the past few years have been hard for me. This part of my life feels like a never-ending process of getting comfortable with ambiguity. Of surrendering to the hopeless feeling of uncertainty in literally every facet of my life. Even though it’s hard, I’m getting really, really good at it. I have no idea what I’m doing or where it’s all going to lead. But I think reigniting this blog would be good for me. I want to have a place to put my thoughts about what I’m reading and thinking and writing about. And maybe I can let go of the perfectionism if I lower the bar to the absolute minimum.

Check back in here for another dispatch soon. I want to write about this freaky little book I just read called City of Rats.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Thanks for being patient, as I haven’t felt up to writing here in a minute. I’ve had a really stressful few months since my birthday, and I’ve been challenged a lot to hold on tight to my ethics and beliefs, even when it’s been hard or inconvenient. I think I’ve been avoiding this blog because I wanted to show up when I could offer a more concise take on what I’m currently going through, or wrap it all up in a nice bow and click send, and get that little dopamine hit of doing something perfectly. But that’s not real. That’s not the truth. The truth is I’m in active recovery from a lot of things, but in a broad sense I’m recovering from an addiction to suffering and grasping at control. It’s not some lovely, linear journey, it’s ugly af and I don’t often know what the next best step to take is. I want to share my thoughts with the world, and I want to share my writing, but I get SO wrapped up in my own head and I suffocate any flame of inspiration I might feel. I’ve had a perfectionism relapse the past couple months. It makes sense. I’ve been stressed and uncertain, and that makes me want to “fix” my life. But what I’m starting to realize is that it’s the very concept of “fixing” myself that is constantly getting me deeper in the mud. It’s not working. It has literally never worked, yet I devote so much of my life to fixing my perceived flaws: fix my body, fix my relationships, fix my art, my habits, my entire freaking life. I know that I feel my best when I allow myself to be ENOUGH, just the way I am. Two months ago, when I posted about my birthday, I truly felt all those things that I wrote. I still do, but it’s all mixed up in pain and confusion. I don’t feel like I’m enough right now, not deep down in my heart, where I want to feel it the most. I know it intellectually, and that’s what I’m rolling with these days. A year ago, I intellectually wanted to recover from my eating disorder, now I know with all my heart I will never go back. I have often had to fake it till I made it, and I have seen it work for me over and over again. I put my body through the motions and let my brain catch up.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" through the Asian Classics Institute (ACI) and it feels good to be putting my body through those motions. There is so much to learn, and something I love about yourself is that I’ve trained myself to recognize that and learn from anything. When people refer to the “Three Jewels” of Buddhism, they’re referring the the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The Buddha is less about Siddhartha Gautama, the man who lived and died a long ass time ago, and more about the potential we all have, the fact that his mind wasn’t different from ours, the reality that we could reach enlightenment. Dharma is the teachings to get us there, not just in the scripture and commentaries written over the last 2,500 years, but anything that helps us wake up to our own Buddha-nature. And the Sangha is the community of people committed to walking that path towards awakening with you. We can’t really do it alone (as much as we want to, and as much as meditating alone in a cave for 12 years is romanticized) and our Sangha not only supports us, but gives us opportunities to support others (which is supporting ourselves AHHHHHGH!) and plant seeds of future goodness.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" “any existing object” which is no random mistake, as Tibetan language is inextricable from Buddhist beliefs. It was created for that. I think it’s fascinating that Dharma has this double meaning because it implies that every existing object is actually an opportunity for waking up and learning something. In that view of the world, it works to see signs and symbols everywhere I look, which is something I rejected for a really long time. How selfish right? Like the universe put something right here in my way just for me?? But the more I study Buddhism, the more I realize that the fact that I can look at the exact same thing as someone else, and it can be imbued with some deep meaning to me, and be absolutely nothing to someone else and vice versa is literally just as magical as some benevolent sky god trying to communicate with me. I thought it was sky-god way or nothing, and I went deep down the Nihilism hole for many years.

That’s it. Nothing world-shaking happening over here. I think sometimes it can be really uncomfortable to celebrate ourselves, especially in front of other people, and for a long time, I wasn’t crazy about celebrating. I aways felt a lot of pressure on the day of, and I would usually end up having more fun the day before, or the day after. I think, too, that birthdays really make you pause and reflect, and as someone who has loved and lost a lot of people for various reasons, my birthday used to feel like this painful reminder of all the people I miss and can’t be around. Even before I was estranged from my father, we lived far apart from each other, and it always felt like it was on my birthdays that the pain of that separation grew more acute, and bubbled up the the surface.

It doesn’t surprise me that a lot of people don’t want a big deal made of their birthdays, because to me, birthdays are days to celebrate how special and how loved you are. It’s always true, but I love that we have special days that are just for that. A lot of people (ME) are super uncomfortable with just sitting in that space of receiving affirmations, getting attention, just generally ***B E I N G***P E R C E I V E D*** which is, in my experience, one of the most cringe things ever. But that sentiment deserves to be unpacked and understood, since being perceived is at the root, one of our most basic human desires. The more I work on loving myself and recognizing all the ways that I DONT treat myself like I love myself, the more interested I am in facing my fears of being recognized and celebrated. If you believe in karma, and I 100% do, then why would I be going around obsessed with planting beautiful seeds of goodness all the time, and then be horrified when I find myself alone in a garden full of insanely gorgeous flowers?

You Forgot I Was a Seed is a reader-supported publication. which is this deep love and compassion for ALL beings. The first year of holding those vows, I really struggled to wrap my mind around the idea that I am a being, too, that requires all the goodness I claim to want for the world. And on the flip side of that, I can’t be walking around trying to lessen the amount of harm I cause in the world while actively hating and hurting myself. Part of what appeals to me about the vows in the first place is the fact that that love is unconditional. It doesn’t change if you like someone, or if you hate them, if they hurt you or love you, every single being is worthy of that love and compassion. No exceptions. Full fucking stop. That really means something to me, and that unconditional love is at the core of what I find so moving about Buddhism in the first place.

A year ago, as I turned 28, I was DEEP in suffering, ego, and disordered behavior. I shaved my head at the time because I had intense feelings of dysmorphia, depression, anxiety, and total loss of control. I was weighing all my food to the gram and really struggling with oscillating between starving myself until losing control with food, and then trying to purge responsibility for that cycle until it started all over again. I hated myself, I hated my body, and I felt completely disconnected from joy. It sounds really bad because it was, and I am sorry for the people that love me that have to read that. It hurts me to know that I treated myself like that, too. It makes me incredibly sad. But a big part of repairing that relationship with myself has been forgiving myself for all the ways I unintentionally hurt myself and the world around me when I was grasping at any sense of control. I’m so thankful for that girl with the sad buzzcut. She got me to where I am today, and she did not feel good doing it. I have a great haircut now that makes me feel hella cute so !

In the past year I have grown SO much and made SO MUCH incredible progress. Not only do I no longer track every calorie that goes into my body, I don’t even own a scale, and no longer obsessively check my weight multiple times a day. A few months ago I was able to get off my depression and anxiety medications because my therapist said I had HEALED MY NEURAL PATHWAYS. I still get depressed and anxious, obvs. but I have all these other coping mechanisms. I started working with an emotional eating and self-love expert, Amber Romaniuk, and have been really doing the work to unlearn the maladaptive ways I’ve coped with my emotions for decades. IT FEELS INCREDIBLE. I have a healthy relationship with myself. I love myself. I want to be with myself when I’m alone. I want to make decisions that honor and respect myself. If that sounds totally out of reach, just know that I built this. I planted these seeds a LONG time ago, and I’ve been trusting in that wisdom whenever it got really hard. I’m not different or special. If you can perceive me doing it, you have the capacity to do it, too. Start small by drinking water and interrupting the shitty dialogue you’re constantly having with yourself.

<a class="image-link image2 I am safe, and the more I show myself that, the more I blossom and become even more lovable, just the way I am. I want to spend the next year deepening the work it feels I’ve only just begun. I have harvested a lot of garbage blooms from garbage seeds, but that was all making room for all the goodness I was planting in the meantime. I want to keep gardening, keep dancing ballet, keep singing on my karaoke mic, keep spending time with people that love and respect me, that want to grow with me instead of control me. I have cleared out any sense of abuse in my life, and now that it’s gone I can’t stand even a hint of it. This time, I’m choosing all the pleasure. All the kisses and luxury and abundance.

I am so insanely grateful for all the goodness, all the beauty I can see, all the lessons I continue to learn. My life truly is the perfect curriculum for me to wake tf UP. I had the intention of waking up last year and life was like “OKAY, be careful what you ask for, Bitch.” I make that intention again now, knowing full well that I means being uncomfortable, even experiencing some pain along the way. I’ll take it, and then some. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. I love you.

Dylan

You Forgot I Was a Seed is a reader-supported publication. I made straight D’s and F’s throughout my childhood and I dropped out at 18 with less than a 2.0 GPA. I finished up my last few credits at an alternative school, graduated 6 months early, and moved to Kenya where one of my aunts was finishing a two year stay as a Peace-Corp volunteer. That three-month trip to Kenya was a WILD ride, as well as a story for another time. My point is that the only reason I scraped my way into the cult of academia in the first place, is because I wrote a decent essay, and I made it look like I had graduated early in order to move to Africa, not because I couldn’t stay in school and my mom didn’t want me smoking weed all day so she sent me as far away from my friends and weed dealer as possible. Long story short, I made it through that hurtle. I made it in, and once I was in I was able to study what I wanted to. By the time I finished my undergraduate degree I was on the Dean’s list, making straight A’s for the first time in my life, and LOVING IT. I was terrified of life outside of academia, so I applied for MFA programs in creative writing at the same time that I was writing my thesis and finishing the bulk of my first degree. This was a mistake. I remember being kind of just perpetually on the verge of tears, completely pushed to my limit, and anything could set me off crying, even friends being kind to me. I had only applied to the most prestigious, fully-funded creative writing programs and as the rejections started slowly coming in, I obsessively refreshed the link to multiple forums where people would post as they were waitlisted, rejected, or took the few precious seats at the programs I thought I so desperately needed to attend. I left my undergrad feeling burn tf out. I had put so much into the cult of academia, I had created my entire burgeoning personality around being a good student, and now I was headed back to my hometown to find a job and nurse the wounds of large-scale creative rejection.

At that time, I started cooking full time, and have been doing that ever since, less out of interest and more out of necessity, but I will say that it stays pretty interesting. Cooking has been a great way for me to support myself as a writer, and when we moved to Baltimore a few years later, I kept cooking and applied to low-residency masters degrees in creative writing. I got into a few and ended up going to Vermont twice a year, until Covid hit, and the program became 100% virtual. I thought it was funny, because when I was graduating with my master’s degree, I felt literally the same feeling of doubt for my future as I did as a senior in college getting rejected from those schools. And I thought that feeling had come from getting

You Forgot I Was a Seed is a reader-supported publication. As far as I was concerned, I was going to do a PhD’s-worth of reading and writing, so why not do it for some credit? I also didn’t get any teaching experience, due to the low-residency format of my graduate program. So, I’m technically qualified to teach at a college level, but I have a whole careers-worth of experience working in professional kitchens. Turns out, that’s not what they’re looking for in teachers. But really—what I want to be doing is writing, and for a long time I felt like the only way I could make a real living for myself as a writer, was by using the prestige of my academic career to give me legitimacy…However, as I learn to love myself just the way I am, the more I begin to realize that I already am incredibly legitimate, and that I don’t need an institution to make me feel safe or enough. I give myself that.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" instead, I’ll be staying here in Nashville, where I am constantly trying to figure out where I fit in. I think my immediate reaction to deciding not to apply was to feel a lot of relief. It’s a lot less work, and I think part of me is relieved that I won’t have to be put through a whole competitive wringer. I was already starting to feels a little overwhelmed by the idea of moving somewhere new as it just now feels like we’re settling back into Tennessee. It feels good to know that we can sort of emotionally spread-out and take our coats off so to speak. There are certain relationships that I wouldn’t want to pursue if I knew I was leaving in less than a year, but it’s nice to settle in and not be constantly focused on what I’m doing next.

For the past 6-12 months, I have been in active recovery from Bulimia, and the recovery from that illness has really changed a lot about how I see myself and my life. I didn’t really realize before, all the ways that I was constantly seeking dopamine and then conflating that behavior with my actual personality. What I keep coming back to is this: if you strip all the things away, all the labels, narratives, and distractions, all the emotions and reactions and trauma, if you strip it away who am I? Who am I when I’m not obsessively controlling my body and my food? Who am I if I don’t need everyone to love me and approve of my actions? Who am I if I am no longer achieving outside of the parameters of a colonialist institution? If I’m not producing anything of worth, do I have any worth? I can see now that controlling my grade point average and my academic reputation is just an extension of the same old disordered behavior. It’s all just attempts at grasping for control. Yet after all these years of grasping, I continue coming up empty-handed. It’s obviously not working.

The more I ask myself these questions the more I keep coming back to a simple answer: Right here, and right now, it’s enough for me to just be. I trust myself that if I’m supposed to be teaching, I’ll be teaching, when I’m supposed to write, I’ll write. Trusting that process is incredibly painful for me, it makes me super uncomfortable. But something I’ve been focusing on lately is being able to tell the difference between when I’m uncomfortable and when I’m actually unsafe. I am safe about 99.99% of the time, so in almost every other situation I’m totally fine, I’m just discovering the edge of my comfort zone and expanding past it into new territory.

Last year I met one of my most precious teachers, Diana, for lunch in NYC. I was on the verge of graduating, from both my master’s program and a meditation teacher training I was completing at the time. She looked me right in the eye and asked “All this talk about teaching—what about just being a writer?” I knew she was right but I was afraid. It’s hard to say what I want: that I want to be a writer and to exist outside of the capitalist grinding stone for even a moment. I want to teach because I want to, not because I have to. I desperately want to be enough, just the way I am.

Thank you so much for supporting my efforts to be honest and to just be, in writing, in this space here with you. I will write more soon, and I haven’t forgotten about my podclasst, Meditation for Silly Geese, I just wanted to slow down and do it right. For the past couple of years, I’ve been doing what I have come to call “The (Ray) Bradbury Challenge.” Author Ray Bradbury is famous for having never been to college, but (I love this) he claims that he graduated from the public library at the age of 28. He was a prolific reader and a ground breaking writer. His books, Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, are modern classics. He says that the best thing you can do to become a great writeris to read one short story a night, one poem, and one piece of non-fiction. He said after putting oneself through the rigors of such a reading schedule for 1000 nights, one can expect to be widely enough read to be a good writer. I’ve adapted this challenge, gave it a name, and made some personal adjustments.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It has been so delightful to get to share this newsletter with both the people in my life that I know and love as well as total strangers! This project has been a full bodied YES for me, and it’s been such a reminder that everything in our life could be a YES like that, and how can we have more of that? It made me think about all the times I’ve worried about being a “quitter” and even just that word is so telling to me—that’s not my language, that’s language that was put onto me by other people in my life. I’ve been told in the past that I lack the willpower and the follow through to finish projects, and that is an identity that I have been running from my entire life. I never want to be thought of as a quitter, or as someone who is unreliable. In fact, the times when I have had to step away from projects, or call it quits without completing something, it has hurt me more than probably anyone else. Now though, I have the vocabulary to know that I stopped working on those projects because they didn’t feel good to me. It wasn’t about willpower, or lacking some kind of fundamental self-discipline, it was about not being in alignment with what’s important to me, or I was doing things for the wrong reasons: obligation, people-pleasing, and dopamine-seeking. One of the biggest fears that came up when I decided to start this blog was that I couldn’t stand to be a quitter. I couldn’t stand the idea of committing to something and then not being able to follow through perfectly. That is all just the ego-speaking. Those fears are just fears, and I am thankful for the opportunity to move through them. All that’s to say, thanks a lot for being here, this project feels so healthy and healing for me, and it makes me really happy to know it has the potential to help others, too.

You Forgot I Was a Seed is a reader-supported publication. I completed my 200-hour Meditation Teacher Training through Three Jewels, a meditation and Dharma center in NYC where I also took my Refuge and Bodhisattva vows. I am trained within the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, but I particularly enjoy teaching from a secular lens. My role as modern lineage holder of an ancient wisdom is an incredible thing that influences every element of my life, and it’s something I will continue to share, especially here on my newsletter. That being said, it’s incredibly important to share that wisdom in a way that is truly accessible to my students, without being overly esoteric or complicated. If you can’t use it, what good is it to you, really? Something my teacher, Hector, says that I really love is that there are people all over the world that are practicing the actions and the beliefs of Buddhism that will never know the word “Buddhism” or get to study any ancient scripture, etc. And there’s also “good” Buddhists all over the world that read all the right books, some are even monks in monasteries and they aren’t really practicing—not in their hearts deep down. The point is that it’s not about Buddhism with a capital B. That’s just a collection of letters forming a word, representing an idea you probably have some vague cultural notion of already in your head. It’s the fundamental practices and beliefs, outside of language and culture, that fascinate me, and that ultimately affect the way I live and teach.

So, what is meditation?

At its most basic definition, meditation is a technique of experimenting with the mind. It is an ancient technology used by nearly every religion through out history to center the mind and regain connection to the body. Using an object to focus on like our breath or visualizations, we can move our mind through motions that we may not otherwise practice in our day-to-day lives. In my life, meditation has been an incredible tool for me to learn how my mind works in the first place. I think it’s kind of fucked up and funny because people think “oh la la—I’ve started to meditate and I’m going to have fun with my mind” but the reality is, for the first six months or year of practicing regularly, there’s this weird period where you feel like you’re going absolutely bonkers, when in reality it’s that you’re realizing that your brain has been acting bonkers this whole time without you realizing it. But fear not, Silly Goose, because as we keep showing up and practicing, and putting in the time to explore our minds, the more we can make friends with the things that originally seemed like obstacles. We have so much to learn from ourselves, and the practice of meditation is about getting quiet enough so that we can hear that wisdom in the first place.

I have been wanting to teach again, but have felt unable to commit to physically being in one place every week, and I can’t stand the idea of beginning a class and not following through on it for my students. A natural outcome of these needs is my new audio offering via Substack, Meditation for Silly Geese. In this podcast/class (podclasst!) we will be going into the basics and fundamentals of what meditation is, how to cultivate a personal practice, and how to expand your capacity to control your own mind slowly over time. These are incredibly powerful tools that you can use right away to gain more peace and clarity in your everyday life. If you plant some good seeds in the garden of your mind as a result of that, who knows what kind of beauty could grow out of that?

I am so excited to get deeper into this and to start putting these classes out, starting in September. These classes will be for paid subscribers only, and I hope you will consider investing in this creative project. When I teach IRL, I usually charge $10/class so I’m excited that Substack is helping me make my classes more accessible. I made the mistake of saying “75% of American’s are chronically dehydrated” in the kitchen (which, it turns out is NOT true!) and for months I would enter a room and hear one co-worker saying to another “You know—75% of American’s are chronically dehydrated!” and the joke would start all over again. I think I’ve thrived in professional kitchens because my family is the same way. We are equal opportunity roasters—nobody is safe, and we WILL hurt your feelings on accident, even though we were just kidding and you are really sensitive to begin with. That is a blessing and a curse of kitchen work, there are plenty of opportunities to thicken your skin. I still work hard to stay soft in harsh places, but my current job is so much more chill compared to other places I have worked at.

For this piece, I looked up the actual statistics on adult dehydration through the National Library of Medicine. So, OK—75% of American’s are not chronically dehydrated to the point where they might die, that’s more like 23-30% (which is still wild) and older people are more likely to get dehydrated as they age. There’s not a category for “not-acutely-dying-but-not-feeling-totally-great-either” which is where I feel like nearly everyone I know stands.

You Forgot I Was a Seed is a reader-supported publication. I have talked to a lot of people and have heard a lot that the people in my life want to change their daily habits and take better care of themselves, they just don’t know how. Making sure your body is getting enough water can be a small, yet super effective way to make positive changes in our life. Most of the time when we get quiet and really ask ourselves what we need, we surprise ourselves when the answer isn’t something huge like “go on a multi-thousand dollar trip” or “blow up your life and start from scratch” but instead, it’s something simple and underrated like “how about just drinking a little more water?”

I’ve worked in kitchens (off and on) since I was 17 years old, and I’ve been cooking full time since I graduated from college in 2016. I have spent THOUSANDS of hours trapped in HOT fuckin kitchens, standing over planchas and fryers, French tops, and gas powered grills. Getting enough water is a big part of not feeling like shit at inopportune times in the kitchen. There’s not usually a lot of spare time to get light-headed or rip your clothes off because you’re so hot and can’t take it anymore. Still, it wasn’t until I started working at my new job, and began tending a 900 degree wood-fired pizza oven, that I really got serious about drinking a gallon of water a day. And it was hard at first—I would chug the water whenever I thought of it, and for a long time a half gallon was my marker, and then for a really long time I drank 100ozs every night. I know that I can get kind of neurotic about it, because I like to use my specific water bottle and I don’t like to share it if I’m counting my ounces. As someone who is in recovery for an eating disorder and really compulsive behaviors around food/my body, I am still trying not to be so obsessed with the numbers and markers and instead I try to focus more on how my body is feeling.

In our culture we’re so obsessed with quick-fixes and bandaids that we can slap onto any problem. The real problem is, that’s not how real healing works. That’s why it’s so positive to make a commitment to drinking more water. There was some point in your life where you got dehydrated, and maybe you’ve not been able to truly catch up. I can guarantee that if you are not adequately hydrating your body, you are not listening to it’s signals when it tells you what it needs, in ALL areas of life. So much of our culture is telling us to “listen to our bodies” but only when the messages our bodies are sending us have to do with playing into capitalism. Listen to your body as long as it’s telling you to eat what they want you to eat, track your macros, but use their special app, lose fat, gain muscle, BUY PRODUCTS. BUY! BUY! BUY! But the more I learn to REALLY listen—without having to have my sensations interpreted through capitalism—the more I get the message to divest where I can and to be as gentle on my body as humanly possible. Our world is plenty harsh…there will always be environmental factors around to stress your body and your mind out, without you contributing to it. So how can we become sanctuaries in our own worlds? How can we divest and choose something different, thus getting different results in the future? Every time we take a sip of water (I just did) we plant a seed of taking care of ourselves, of nourishing our bodies, and by extension our communities and entire whole world.

Can I nerd out for a second? I mean more than I have already. Because I can’t get over the fact that the same water that’s around is the SAME water we’ve always had. It’s the same blood that pumped through the veins of the motherfuckin DINOSAURS.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Worshiped by practically every culture, that same water that is protected by a whole pantheon of ancient gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures. Every time we engage with this incredible, ancient element, we’re bringing that magic into our own bodies and our own lives. Think if it like a sad little dried up river bed, trying so hard to make energy and only a single little trickle of water. Now here you come trying to take your canoe down this river and you’re just pushing along with your paddles, scraping on the river rocks. I don’t want that for you and your canoe!! I am wishing flowing nourishing splashing fun WATER in your life. I am wishing for you to have cold water when you’re hot, and hot water when you’re cold. I am wishing you the continued fortune of having access to water from the get-go. Every time we appreciate the blessing that we have access to water in this lifetime, we plant another seed of further good fortune. You know, the Buddhists would say—if you want more water, find someone who is thirsty and help them get a drink. It’s deceptively simple yet incredibly rich and complex. If you’re lucky enough to have access to clean, safe drinking water in this world, you’re so incredibly lucky. Show gratitude by using the amazing tools we have available to us, and the next time you’re so thirsty and get to gulp down some water, try to remember what a privilege it is, and get hydrated so you can better love our world.

Sometimes the shitty, ego-driven part of me hears me say something like that above and I roll my eyes and feel so hokey. But that’s kind of the whole freakin point of this blog—if we’re being totally honest, I think nourishing your body and therefore your world is one of the coolest, most radical things you can do. Being aloof, depressed, drug-addicts is OUT, Honey, we’re taking care of our precious bodies and learning to earnestly love ourselves. If you also feel resistance coming up, it’s a great opportunity to get quiet with yourself and ask yourself why? At what point did it become unsafe for you to be tender? What will happen if you let yourself be more earnest in your everyday life? Since the ego is so deeply rooted, we will continue to have this feedback despite showing ourselves all the good we can do. It’s a perfect time to say fuck it, and fake it till you make it. In a few months, you’ll be feeling better and your ego won’t be able to control you as well.

I feel like it took me about three months of drinking enough water consistently to rehydrate my body. It was frustrating sometimes, because I felt like I was drinking water and still not getting anywhere. I am still working on getting back to that point since I got derailed having covid. (When I had that personal drought in our backyard I was also having a personal drought inside.) Some things that really helped me were finding a water bottle with the right mouth-feel for me. (I know that’s not the right use of mouth-feel but you know what I mean!) I will drink considerably more water out of a straw than a wide-mouth jar, but that will be different for different people. Try out different styles of water bottle till you find what works for you. Use lime, lemon, cucumber, mint, and other fruit or herbs to jazz it up if you get bored easily. I’ve also found that if I can get a substantial amount of water drank in the first half of the day, I can coast through the rest of the night. If I start at like 5PM, I’m fucked.

The point is to incorporate more self care into our daily lives in the smallest, most fail-proof ways we can think of. It doesn’t serve you or your world to take on every task as a new opportunity for perfectionism. That’s out with being aloof, we don’t need perfectionism anymore. It has never served us and never will. We are all surrounded by imperfect people who are all completely obsessed with being perfect. How’s that working for ya? How about, as just a first step, you start by assessing the amount of water you’re currently drinking and how much you need to be drinking. Don’t add 100oz for a day and then drop it because it’s too hard, start by adding a cup to what you’re already drinking and then go from there.

Remember, be as gentle as possible: there’s no rush and you’re already enough, just the way you are. If you’re reading this, take a deep breath and drink your water.

Love,

Dylan

p.s.

Thank you so much to everyone who has subscribed to You Forgot I Was a Seed. It has been MAGICAL to get to launch this new project and to connect to the incredible people in my life who I love so much. There will always be free content available on this platform, but I am really excited to up my offerings for paid subscribers. If you feel called to upgrade to paid membership, it’s only $6/month or $60/year. This money goes right into savings, and it allows me the creative freedom of publishing my work outside of the traditional publishing rat-race, which I continue to engage in, lol. Stay tuned for my new (audio) meditation series coming soon, Meditation for Silly Geese. SO MANY people in my life have told me they want to start meditating but they don’t know how OR they tried once and they think they’re bad at it. I am a trained meditation teacher and I look forward to launching this next phase of the project. Stay tuned for more posts about self-care techniques that can be used by anyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Dylan Morison, my pronouns are she/her/hers, and I am a writer and full-time cook currently living in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ve been passionate about writing for nearly 20 years, and in 2021 I finished my MFA in Creative Writing with a concentration in fiction. In a few short months, I (think I) will begin the process of applying to PhD programs across the US (plus a few abroad!). As I finish my first novel and a collection of short stories, I am really hoping that this blog can be a place for me to publish writing about various topics that are interesting to me. I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while now, but after an auspicious conversation with a shaman, I have decided that the time is right to set this project into motion.

The title of this blog comes from Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos, in a 1978 couplet later translated to English by Nicholas Kostis: “what didn’t you do to bury me/but you forgot that I was a seed.” Originally directed at the Greek literary community for his perceived rejection, Christianopolous spent most of his life working as an outsider, creating his poetry for reasons that went beyond money and literary recognition. I chose to co-opt the phrase in the sense of being buried by Samsara, or the perpetual cycle of suffering that we humans constantly find ourselves caught up in. Samsara tries to bury us. It tries to tell us we can’t grow. It tells us that we aren’t worthy of healing the things that we don’t want in our worlds and in our lives. It tells us that things will always stay the same—that change is impossible—while somehow simultaneously convincing us that nothing good can ever last. These kinds of “samsaric” mindsets are delusions but the consequences they precipitate are very much real. I experiences a “personal drought” in my backyard garden (lol). We had a string of 100+ degree days and all my beautiful plants withered and my heart got sad and I gave up on watering them and then I was left with a bunch of dead-looking plants. But that’s just it—they only looked dead, beneath the crunchy, brown surface there were roots waiting to be nourished so that they could get back to their job—growing. Now a lot of those same plants are flourishing in my care. Samsara would have us believe that we are nothing—that we’re the dirt beneath our feet. But we are the seeds planted in the rich compost of our lives. When we nourish ourselves and create an ideal environment, germination happens organically. We heal and grow on our own terms and in our own time.

Thanks for reading You Forgot I Was a Seed! Master Shantideva (Buddhist monk and scholar who wrote The Bodhisattva’s Way of Life) said that we are each holding on to our own hot coals of suffering—they burn us so terribly, yet we refuse to loosen our grips and let them go. It’s different for different people, but the hot coal I can’t seem to let go of is a deep feeling of unworthiness. It’s not mine originally. It was inherited through my family, my culture, and my past actions. But it is mine now, and it’s my responsibility to alchemize it into something beautiful. As I continue loosening my grip on the hot coal of unworthiness, I can feel it losing its grip on me. I didn’t start a blog before, because I couldn't handle the idea of not doing it perfectly. When I thought about all the rules I would have to set for myself—strict posting timelines and whatnot—and when I tried to imagine a niche that I could cram myself into the whole project felt restrictive and more like a chore than a fun creative outlet. I’ve committed to NOT posting at the same time every month and I will continue holding myself to rigorous standards of imperfectionism. One of the things that I’ve learned as a writer, cook, and general adult-person, is that when we are constantly trying to control and wrangle our lives, we ironically end up creating more tension and unhappiness and we set into motion the patterns that eventually lead to us to lose control all over again. I’m still trying to learn how to “flow” with life, and not be so rigid. The true healing I’ve experienced in my life has come from these moments of flow—when I’ve let go and forgiven myself for not being perfect. These moments of self-compassion have been a balm for the self-hate I’ve harbored over the past nearly three decades. As I learn to love myself and heal my inner world, I continue being surprised at all the ways my outer world is transformed as well.

If you’ve read along with me so far, I thank you. My wish for this blog is that it can be a fun sort of e-zine/writing lab so that I can get more comfortable writing nonfiction for its own sake. As I try to publish my fiction traditionally and divest from social media, I find myself craving ways to interact with the world on my own terms. I’ve been taking an extended Instagram break for the past year and have found my mental health is much improved. Whenever I feel ungrounded and stressed out, it’s usually because I’m moving too fast and I’m losing any sense of nuance that I might have from slowing down. The only time you really hurt yourself in the kitchen is when you’re moving too fast for your own good. When you’re already 10 steps ahead of yourself, thinking about what you need to do next, and suddenly your grabbing a hot pan or slicing yourself with a knife because you’re being careless. I don’t want to be careless with this precious life I’ve got right now. Slowing down is truly a privilege and this blog will hopefully allow you, dear reader, the privilege of slowing down for a second, too. If you’re reading this, take a deep breath and drink your water. I’ll be back soon with another post.

Love,

Dylan

p.s

I also look forward to posting guided meditations and book reviews, so stay tuned for more fun stuff coming soon!

Thanks for reading You Forgot I Was a Seed!
