I have a confession that will sound strange coming from a man who just spent an entire letter telling you to be delusional, to reach for the impossible, to refuse the comfort of small dreams. Here it is. I am learning to slow down.

Not because the dream shrank. Not because I lost my nerve. But because I have started to understand something Solomon understood long before me.

“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.”

Ecclesiastes three opens with that sentence for a reason. Even the wisest man who ever lived, a man given wisdom directly from God, still had to submit to timing he did not control.

The joy that will not stay

I finish something significant and for a moment I am genuinely happy. Then the joy leaves faster than I expect it to. My mind is already reaching for the next mountain before I have finished catching my breath on this one. I used to think that restlessness was ambition. Lately I have come to suspect it is impatience wearing ambition’s clothes.

You cannot rush greatness. There is a process to things, and most of us are trying to solve decade old problems in a matter of days, trying to become known before we have become the kind of person who can survive being known. I have watched it happen to others. Sudden platforms handed to people who had not yet built the capacity to carry the weight of them, and the collapse that followed was not because God’s gift was wrong, it was because the vessel was not ready. I do not want to be that man. I would rather be small and sound than large and hollow.

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”

Habakkuk was told to write the vision plainly, and then told to wait on it. Both instructions came from the same God in the same breath. Write it down. Then wait. I am learning that speed was never the point. Alignment is the point.

Understanding the times

I think often of the men of Issachar, a small tribe mentioned almost in passing in the middle of a long genealogy in the book of Chronicles, described simply as “men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.” Not the largest tribe. Not the strongest. But the one entrusted with discernment, the one that understood which season Israel stood in and what that season required of them.

I want to be a man like that. Not a man chasing his own timeline, but a man who has learned to read the room God has placed him in and move only when God says move.

“His ways are not my ways, and His thoughts are not my thoughts,”

God told Isaiah, and the gap between His ways and mine has never been the problem. The problem is my impatience with the gap. My ways must become His. Not the other way around, and not through my forcing His hand into my calendar.

Consolidation is not the opposite of momentum. Consolidation is what makes the next season of momentum possible to build on without collapsing. A farmer does not plant on top of an unharvested field. He clears it first. He lets the ground rest. I am learning to let mine rest, even when every instinct in me wants to plant again immediately.

The difference between fame and light

We live in an era that has confused being seen with being significant. Everyone wants to be known, popular, an influencer, and it is easy, dangerously easy, to mistake that noise for the kind of influence Christ actually calls us toward. He did not say go and be famous. He said

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Light does not need an audience to be light. It simply needs to be positioned where the darkness is thickest.

The influence I am after is not the kind that trends for a week and fades. I want to be the kind of light that brings healing to the land that has been sick for generations, that answers a hungry child’s hunger with actual food and not just a moving post about the child’s hunger.

Dying before growing

Here is a hard pill I have had to swallow. It was never about me. Not the recognition, not the platform, not the comfort of being loved by everyone who watches.

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”

Paul wrote that to the Philippians about the mind of Christ, who “made himself of no reputation,” who emptied himself of glory he was entitled to in order to serve people who could offer him nothing back.

I am but a tool in the hand of a much larger story, and so are you. You must surrender the version of greatness that is really just self glorification wearing a spiritual costume. Jesus said it plainly.

“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”

A seed that refuses to die never becomes a harvest. It simply stays a seed, whole and unused and alone.

I cannot become the man God has already envisioned until I die daily to the things that keep me small. My hunger to be loved by everyone. My addiction to approval. My need to always look composed, always look right, always look like a man who has it together.

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

Paul’s words in Galatians are not just words to me anymore. They are the daily instruction. I must be willing to look foolish to the watching world if that is the price of becoming wise in God’s sight, because “the foolishness of God is wiser than men.”

The fire that purifies

God is in my heart. I know that with certainty. But I am honest enough to admit that other things live there too, alongside Him, uninvited but present. Lies I tell myself to feel better. Lust that has nothing to do with love. Hatred I dress up as righteous frustration. My daily prayer has become simple. Let me die to these things today, and let me yield what is left completely to Christ.

“He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire,”

John the Baptist said of the one coming after him, and I have stopped being afraid of that fire. A refiner does not burn silver to destroy it. He burns it to remove what does not belong, until he can see his own reflection in what remains. I want Him to see Himself in me. I am not there yet. I am in the fire, and I have decided to stop fighting the flame.

I am your wealthy uncle, and my testimony shall be that His will became fully my will.

Bringing God’s love to the Nations

There is a word for men like me. My friends use it half joking, half in awe, when I tell them what I believe God is going to do with my hands. Delusional. And I have stopped fighting the label. I have started wearing it.

Let me tell you what I mean, because it is not what you think.

I am not delusional about my capabilities. I know exactly how small they are. I know the limits of my bank account, the limits of my education, the limits of what one man who grew up in Akure can physically accomplish in a single lifetime. If you audited me by what I have in hand, you would find a modest man with a modest reach. But I am not measuring myself by what is in my hand. I am measuring myself by who lives inside me.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 is not a verse I quote for decoration. It is the whole architecture of my confidence. Paul did not write those words from a mountaintop of comfort. He wrote them from a prison cell, having learned, in his own words, the secret of being content whether he had plenty or nothing at all. That is the delusion I am talking about. A man in chains writing about limitless strength. A man with nothing declaring he lacks nothing that matters.

The man who pursues in lack

I call myself your wealthy uncle, and people assume it is a joke about money I do not have. It is not a joke. It is a confession. I carry wealth I did not deposit myself. Every vision, every impossible-sounding assignment on my life, was placed there by Someone with unlimited resources and a habit of funding what He starts.

“Who has despised the day of small things?” Zechariah asked that question over a remnant of Israel staring at the pitiful beginnings of a temple that would one day hold the glory of God. I ask myself that question every time I look at what is currently in my hands and feel the gap between it and what has been promised. The gap used to terrify me. Now I have learned to stand in it and pursue anyway.

Most people think faith means waiting until you have enough before you move. But the Bible does not celebrate the man who waited for abundance. It celebrates the boy who brought five loaves and two fish to a hungry multitude, knowing the math did not work, and watched Jesus take his inadequate offering and multiply it until baskets overflowed. I do not focus on my inadequacy. I focus on what is in my hands, and I hand it over, trusting God to do what only God can do with it.

“Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.” Paul wrote that to the Corinthians, and I have come to believe it is the most liberating sentence in the New Testament. I do not have to be enough. I was never going to be enough. Christ completes what I cannot finish, strengthens what I cannot carry, and multiplies what I cannot stretch on my own.

Reaching for what looks impossible

I have learned to reach for the impossible on purpose. To pursue what looks improbable to everyone watching. To build what many people quietly consider too difficult for someone in my position, in my country, with my resources. Because what kind of life is it if everything comes easy? What kind of testimony is built on things that required no faith?

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews eleven does not read like a list of comfortable men. It reads like a catalogue of people who did ridiculous things because God told them to. Noah building a boat under a clear sky. Abraham leaving home with no forwarding address. Sarah laughing at a promise her body said was impossible, and receiving it anyway. None of them had it easy. All of them had it certain, because the God who spoke does not speak empty words.

I remember standing at the beginning of this year with an idea for something called the School of Agricultural Policy. I did not see the full picture. I still do not see all of it. I had a conviction, a handful of relationships, and a sense that God was not finished writing this particular chapter of the continent’s story. That is all I had. Six months later, we have reached thousands of people across Africa and among Africans scattered across the diaspora, people hungry not for charity but for the tools to build food sovereignty with their own hands.

I did not engineer that reach. I could not have. “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” Ephesians three, twenty. I have read and heard that verse so many times, but I only understood it the day I watched something I built from almost nothing outgrow every plan I had drawn for it. It is not strategy. It is the work of a God who delights in doing more than the size of the vessel He is pouring into.

The man on the other side of becoming

Here is the truest thing I can tell you about myself. I am not chasing the achievement of becoming. I am chasing the man who exists on the other side of the process. I want to meet him. I think about him often, the version of me who has survived the refining and come out the other side genuinely humble, capable of loving people without condition, someone who has learned to place God and purpose above the small pleasures that seduce most of us into settling.

“But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.” Job said that in the middle of losing everything, and I think about it every time the road toward this vision gets narrow. The testing is not punishment. It is preparation. Gold does not become gold by being admired in the ground. It becomes gold by fire.

I know what I carry is bigger than the man carrying it. To think that God would use ordinary hands, to help steer a continent away from hunger toward abundance, is not something I can take credit for. It is something I can only steward. There is a difference between building a career and carrying an assignment. I have come to believe I was given the second one.

An invitation, not a boast

I do not write this to impress you. I write this as a man who is genuinely burdened by what God has placed on his life, and who has decided that burden is worth carrying with joy rather than dragging with fear. I write this as a man who has chosen reckless, delusional optimism in the willingness of God to work through ordinary hands.

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” The father of the boy in Mark nine did not have perfect faith. He was honest. “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” That is the most human prayer in Scripture, and I think it is the doorway every delusional man walks through before he does anything worth remembering.

So here is what I actually want for you, reading this. I want you delusional too. I want you to have reckless faith in Christ’s willingness to bring his purpose to life through your hands, whatever those hands currently hold or do not hold. The dream sitting on your inside, the vision that feels too large for your resume, the assignment that keeps you awake because you cannot picture how you would ever pull it off, that is not evidence you were mistaken. It is evidence that God does not call people to what they can already do alone. He called Moses to speak although Moses stuttered. He called Gideon mighty warrior while Gideon was hiding in a winepress. He calls you to abundance while you are counting your lack.

Have faith. Be delusional. Reach for what only Christ in you can finish.

I am Akin-Olotu Juwon, your wealthy uncle, bringing you God’s wealth.

It was a warm evening in Bruges, the kind of evening that makes you forget you’re in a city built on canals and old stone. My friend had invited me over for a barbecue. It was him, his wife, and a handful of their friends, all Belgian, and me, the only Nigerian in the garden.

The food was good, the wine was better, and for most of the night the conversation drifted the way conversations do at gatherings like this: weather, work, travel, the usual. Then, as it always seems to happen, the conversation turned to politics.

The host’s wife, curious and well-meaning, turned to me and asked, “What political party is currently ruling in Nigeria?”

“The All Progressives Congress,” I said.

Her face lit up. “Progressives! That’s awesome.”

I smiled, took a sip of my drink, and said nothing more.

I knew where the conversation would have gone if I had continued. I would have had to explain that the name on the door has almost nothing to do with what happens inside the house. That “progressive” in Nigerian politics is a label, not a commitment. That the party governing Africa’s largest democracy is progressive in the same way a building can be called a hospital while having no doctors, no medicine, and no beds. The name remains. The substance left a long time ago.

I have thought about that exchange many times since. Not because the woman was wrong to be hopeful, but because her hope was based on an assumption that political parties still mean what they say. And in Nigeria, that assumption died decades ago. What follows is the story of how it died, and what we lost when it did.

When Ideas Had Addresses

There was a time when you could walk into a Nigerian political party and know, before anyone told you, roughly what it believed.

In the years before and immediately after independence, Nigeria’s political parties were not just regional vehicles, though they were certainly that too. They were also carriers of distinct ideological traditions, shaped by the personalities who built them and the philosophies those personalities had absorbed.

Take the Action Group, led by Obafemi Awolowo. Awolowo had studied in London and returned home steeped in Fabian socialism, the same intellectual tradition that shaped Britain’s welfare state. He believed government existed to provide for the people, not the other way around. In 1955, the Western Region, under his leadership, introduced free universal primary education. This was not a campaign slogan. It was policy, implemented, funded, and delivered, years before most of the rest of the continent had even debated the idea. Free healthcare programs followed. The Western Region built a development model around the idea that the state owed its citizens a floor below which they could not fall.

Then there was the NCNC, led by Nnamdi Azikiwe, a party built on a different but equally coherent foundation: pan-Nigerian nationalism, the conviction that the artificial colonial creation called Nigeria could and should become a unified nation, and that self-government was not a privilege to be earned slowly but a right to be claimed.

In the North, the Northern Peoples Congress under Ahmadu Bello pursued a more conservative, gradualist vision, one rooted in preserving the social and religious order of the region while slowly building its institutions and human capital. You may disagree with the politics, but it was, undeniably, a politics. It had a worldview.

And then there was a smaller but fiercer voice: Aminu Kano’s Northern Elements Progressive Union, later the People’s Redemption Party. Kano built his politics around the talakawa, the common people, the poor farmers and laborers who he believed the Northern aristocracy had abandoned. His was a politics of class, not just region, an explicit challenge to the feudal structures that dominated Northern society.

Four traditions. Four genuinely different answers to the question: what is government for? You could vote along ethnic lines, as many did, but you were also, whether you fully realized it or not, voting for an idea about the relationship between the state and the citizen.

The Coups That Broke the Mold

Then came the military.

Between 1966 and 1999, Nigeria spent roughly three decades under military rule, interrupted only by the brief and chaotic Second Republic from 1979 to 1983. Every coup did more than remove a government. It dissolved the party structures that had taken decades to build, scattered their leadership, banned their activities, and in many cases imprisoned or exiled the very people who had carried those ideological traditions.

When civilian rule briefly returned in 1979, some of the old traditions tried to reassert themselves. The Unity Party of Nigeria, led again by Awolowo, revived the social democratic program of free education and free health, this time with a national ambition. Aminu Kano’s tradition lived on through the People’s Redemption Party. But these revivals were operating in a country that had spent over a decade under military command, where political organizing had been criminalized, where an entire generation had grown up without the muscle memory of ideological debate.

By 1983, the soldiers were back. And this time, when democracy returned again at the end of the 1990s, something fundamental had changed.

Manufactured Politics

In the late 1980s, under General Ibrahim Babangida, the military government did something remarkable: it designed Nigeria’s political parties from scratch. The Social Democratic Party and the National Republican Convention were created by decree, given manifestos written by government committees, and positioned as “a little to the left” and “a little to the right” of an undefined center.

Think about what this means. For the first time in Nigerian history, political ideology was not something that emerged from social movements, intellectual traditions, or class struggle. It was issued, like a license plate. The parties existed because the government said they should exist, and they stood for whatever the government decided they should stand for.

This was meant to be temporary, a transitional arrangement. But the precedent it set was not temporary at all. It taught an entire generation of political actors that parties were containers, empty by default, to be filled with whatever was convenient.

The Republic of Convenience

When the Fourth Republic began in 1999, the dominant party, the People’s Democratic Party, was formed less as a movement and more as a coalition of convenience among retired generals, former politicians from every previous era, and regional power brokers who needed a vehicle to return to power. It absorbed people from across the old ideological spectrum, Awoists and Zikists and conservatives and former military men, often within the same state chapter.

The opposition that eventually challenged the PDP followed a similar pattern. The All Progressives Congress was formed in 2013 through the merger of several parties: the Action Congress of Nigeria, which carried some of the lingering Awoist social democratic lineage in the southwest, the Congress for Progressive Change, built around a single personality, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, and factions of the All Progressives Grand Alliance. The merger was strategic, and it worked. It produced, in 2015, the first defeat of a sitting president by an opposition party in Nigeria’s history.

But mergers built for strategy rarely produce coherence. The “Progressives” in the party’s name is, in part, an inheritance from its social democratic component parties. Yet a coalition assembled primarily to win an election, drawing from conservative northern establishment figures, southwestern progressives, and personality-driven blocs from the southeast, was never going to govern as a unified ideological project. The name survived the merger. The ideology did not.

The Age of the Defector

Perhaps nothing illustrates the collapse of ideology more starkly than the Nigerian political defection.

In nearly every election cycle since 1999, we have watched senior politicians, governors, senators, party chairmen, move from one party to another, sometimes more than once, often switching between parties whose names suggest they stand for opposite things. A politician can leave a “progressive” party for a “democratic” one, or vice versa, with no public reckoning, no resignation over principle, no explanation beyond political arithmetic. The local press reports it as routine because it is routine.

This would have been almost unthinkable to Awolowo or Aminu Kano, men who built their parties around convictions they had spent years developing and were prepared to lose elections defending. Today, a politician can change parties the way one changes a phone line, because the party is not a vessel for an idea. It is a platform for a candidacy.

Alongside this came a new vocabulary, the most honest of which may be the phrase “stomach infrastructure,” popularized around 2014 by a state governor to describe a strategy of winning votes through the direct, immediate provision of food and small cash to voters rather than through policy promises. It was meant as a critique, but it also became, cynically, an admission of how elections actually function. When neither party offers a coherent vision of the future, the only currency left is the present meal.

What We Lost in the Gap

So when the host’s wife in Bruges heard the word “Progressives” and smiled, she was not wrong to associate that word with hope. She was simply applying a meaning the word still carries in much of the world, a meaning it once carried here too.

What has been lost is not just a label’s accuracy. It is the entire civic function that ideology used to serve. When parties stand for genuinely different visions of society, elections become a referendum on those visions. Citizens are forced to clarify, even just to themselves, what kind of country they want. Debate has content. Opposition has purpose beyond simply wanting a turn at the resources of the state.

When that disappears, politics becomes a contest between personalities and patronage networks, decided largely by money, ethnicity, and incumbency, with very little left over for the public to actually deliberate about. We are left voting for men, not for ideas, and Aminu Kano, of all people, warned us about exactly this seventy years ago when he built an entire movement around the argument that politics divorced from the interests of ordinary people was not politics at all, just power changing hands among elites.

The Work Ahead

I did not correct the woman in Bruges that night, and I do not regret staying quiet. Some conversations are not worth having over a barbecue with people you will not see again.

But I think about that exchange because it captures something I see constantly when I talk to young Nigerians, including the ones I work with. There is a hunger for something to believe in, but very little exposure to what believing in something, politically, used to look like here. We have inherited the vocabulary of ideology, progressive, democratic, republic, without the substance, and most people have never had the chance to learn that the substance once existed at all, built by men who studied, argued, and were willing to lose for what they believed.

Recovering that substance will not happen through a single election cycle or a single charismatic leader. Awolowo did not build the Action Group’s program overnight, and Aminu Kano spent years organizing among people most of the political class had written off entirely. Ideologies are built, slowly, deliberately, by people willing to do the unglamorous work of teaching, organizing, and arguing for a vision long before it has any chance of winning power.

That is the work ahead of us. Not waiting for a party whose name finally matches its actions, but rebuilding, from the ground up, the kind of political education that once made those names mean something in the first place.

Your Wealthy Uncle, Bringing God’s Wealth to the Nations

There is a photograph taken somewhere in Kano in the early 1960s that tells the story of a Nigeria most Nigerians under forty have never seen.

It is a photograph of the Groundnut Pyramids.

Tens of thousands of bags of groundnuts, stacked in enormous triangular formations across the Kano landscape, waiting for export. The pyramids were not marketing. They were not a stunt. They were the visible product of a functioning agricultural economy, a regional government with both the authority and the fiscal incentive to invest in its farmers, and a governance system in which the people closest to the land had the power to make decisions about it.

By the mid-1980s, the pyramids were gone. Not because Kano’s soil had changed. Not because Nigerians had stopped farming. The pyramids disappeared because the system that produced them was dismantled, deliberately, by a series of decisions made between 1966 and 1979, the consequences of which we are still living with today.

This is the story of that dismantling. And it is, fundamentally, a story about food.

Part One: The System That Worked

Before 1966, Nigeria operated a regional federal system established by the Lyttleton Constitution of 1954. There were four regions: the North, the East, the West, and the Mid-West. Each had its own government, its own budget, its own development priorities, and critically, its own agricultural marketing board.

The system was not perfect. It was competitive, sometimes contentiously so. But that competition produced results.

The regional marketing boards accumulated enormous surpluses between 1954 and 1961: the Eastern Region accumulated N47.8 million; the North, N63.8 million; and the Western Region, N125.1 million. From these accumulated funds, the boards provided capital that financed the establishment of regional production development boards, later known as Development Corporations. These were not abstract financial instruments. They were reinvested into the agricultural economies that generated them. The Northern Region Marketing Board, whose major revenue earner was groundnut, saw its purchases increase from 178,000 tonnes in the 1949/1950 buying season to 787,000 tonnes in the 1963/64 season. Excess funds contributed to the development of Ahmadu Bello University, Hamdala Hotel, Kaduna Textiles, and the Bank of the North. PwC

This is what regional fiscal authority looks like in practice. A government that earns revenue from its own agricultural economy has a direct, irreplaceable incentive to invest in that economy. The wealth stayed close to where it was created. The decisions were made by people who understood the land, the farmers, and the markets they were governing.

The results at the national level were extraordinary. At the time of independence in 1960, Nigeria was the world’s second largest producer of cocoa and the largest exporter of palm oil. It was also a leading exporter of cotton, groundnut, rubber, and hides and skins. Between 1964 and 1965, agriculture accounted for 55 percent of GDP and employed 70 percent of the adult workforce. By 1970, agricultural export crops accounted for between 65 and 75 percent of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings. National Bureau of Statistics

Despite their reliance on traditional tools and indigenous farming methods, Nigerian peasant farmers produced 70 percent of Nigeria’s exports and 95 percent of its food needs. National Bureau of Statistics

A country feeding itself almost entirely. A country earning the majority of its foreign exchange from what its land produced. A governance system in which the regions competed to build the most productive agricultural economies because they were fiscally rewarded for doing so.

This is the Nigeria of the Groundnut Pyramids. It was not an accident of nature. It was a product of architecture.

Part Two: The Night Everything Changed

In the early hours of January 15, 1966, a group of mainly junior army officers launched coordinated attacks on key political and military leaders across Lagos, Kaduna, and Ibadan.

Their stated goal was to remove what they called corrupt and inefficient governance. The coup resulted in the abrupt cessation of civilian governance, and General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi’s administration implemented Decree No. 34, abolishing the regional federal structure and instituting a unitary system.

On May 24, 1966, Ironsi suspended the 1963 Republican Constitution and replaced it with a series of decrees, most notably the Unification Decree, which proclaimed Nigeria a unitary state, changed its name from the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Nigeria, reversed fiscal federalism, unified the Civil Service and the Police, and centralised several other aspects of governance under the federal government.

Ironsi was himself overthrown and killed six months later. But the centralising impulse he introduced did not die with him. Since 1966, Nigeria has had several constitutions, each giving broad and exclusive powers to the central government, to the detriment of its constituent units. Successive federal governments have maintained the stranglehold on power, justified by the aim of providing a political solution to the disunity and deep divisions that have existed since the unification decree was passed.

There was a momentous constitutional transformation under military auspices from a relatively decentralised, parliamentary federation of four ethnic regions to a centrist, presidential, 36-state federalism. Over nearly thirty years of military rule from 1966 to 1999, with a brief civilian interregnum during the Second Republic from 1979 to 1983, the military created a strong central government.

Four regions became twelve states, then nineteen, then twenty-one, then thirty, then thirty-six. Each multiplication of states looked like devolution. It was the opposite. Every new state was more dependent on the centre than the region it replaced. The regions had fiscal bases of their own: agricultural economies they had built and sustained. The new states had allocation formulas. They had Abuja.

The difference between a government that earns its revenue and a government that receives its revenue is not purely administrative. It is political. A government that earns its revenue must invest in the productive capacity that generates it. A government that receives its revenue must invest in its relationship with the person who distributes it. These two incentive structures produce completely different governance behaviours.

Nigeria chose the second. And it has been choosing it ever since.

Part Three: What Centralization Actually Costs

Here is where the abstract becomes concrete.

Nigeria’s 2024 NBS data shows that 32 states are dependent on FAAC for more than 55 percent of their revenues, and 14 states rely on federal allocations for over 70 percent. Only Lagos and Rivers states are capable of fully funding their operations via internally generated revenue.

In the first half of 2025, FAAC disbursements accounted for 73.8 percent of combined state revenue, while internally generated revenue contributed just 26.2 percent.

Under the current revenue-sharing formula, the Federal Government receives 52.68 percent of federation account revenue, states receive 26.72 percent, and local governments receive 20.60 percent.

Read those numbers slowly. This is by design. And the agriculture sector lives or dies inside it.

A state government that receives 73 percent of its revenue as a monthly transfer from Abuja has no intrinsic fiscal incentive to build a competitive agricultural economy. Its political survival depends on maintaining federal goodwill, not on growing farmer income. Its budget priorities are shaped by what the allocation formula rewards, not by what the people requires. And when a new administration arrives in Abuja and changes the priorities, the state recalibrates accordingly.

This is why every agricultural programme since 1966 has been designed in Abuja, announced in Abuja, and funded from Abuja: Operation Feed the Nation, the Green Revolution, the Agricultural Transformation Agenda, NATIP 2022-2027. And this is why each of them has produced impressive launch photographs and underwhelming farmer outcomes. A programme designed two thousand kilometres from the farm by people whose political survival does not depend on the farm’s productivity is a programme designed for the press conference, not the planting season.

The regional marketing boards worked because the regional governments that ran them were financially accountable to the agricultural economies they governed. There was nowhere else to hide. If the Western Region’s cocoa economy collapsed, so did the Western Region’s budget. That accountability produced the surplus. That surplus built Universities across all 4 regions. That accountability produced the Groundnut Pyramids and Cocoa House.

No such accountability exists today anywhere in the Nigerian agricultural governance chain.

Part Four: The Corruption Architecture

The centralization of revenue was also, though this is rarely stated plainly, the architecture of corruption.

When all significant public resources flow through a single point, that point becomes the most valuable real estate in the country. Every political actor, every businessman, every institution whose survival depends on public funding must cultivate access to that point. This is not a character flaw in individual Nigerians. It is a structural consequence of a system in which proximity to federal power determines fiscal outcomes.

The incentive to capture Abuja exceeds the incentive to build Osun, Kebbi, or Enugu. The incentive to ensure your candidate controls federal allocation exceeds the incentive to ensure your state’s farmers are productive. And so the best political minds, the most significant financial resources, and the most consequential decisions in Nigerian public life are organized around a single question: who controls the centre?

Agriculture sits at the margins of that question. It is too slow, too diffuse, too dependent on weather and soil and local knowledge to be a reliable vehicle for the kind of concentrated patronage that the centralised system makes possible. A fertiliser subsidy administered from Abuja can be a vehicle for patronage. A functioning regional agricultural development bank, accountable to a regional government whose budget depends on farmer productivity, is much harder to capture.

The regions built the agricultural development banks. The unitary system replaced them with federal intervention programmes. The intervention programmes are announced annually. The banks have never been rebuilt.

Part Five: Insecurity as the Final Symptom

There is one more dimension that cannot be left out of this conversation.

In 2023, I lost a newly planted 40-hectare farm. It was set on fire by suspected herdsmen. That same area saw farmers abducted, women raped, school children taken, and teachers killed.

I cut my losses and left.

I am not alone. Across Nigeria’s Middle Belt, across farming communities in Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and beyond, farmers are making the same calculation daily: is the risk of farming this land worth the return? For too many, the answer has become no.

This too is a centralization problem. A security architecture that places operational control of the police in Abuja, deploys officers without knowledge of local terrain or language, and provides no meaningful local security infrastructure cannot respond to the granular, community-level dynamics of farmer-herder conflict or the organised kidnapping networks that have turned Nigerian agriculture into a high-risk profession.

The result of the centralized system has been the creation of a gargantuan political entity with a concentration of powers at the centre and underdeveloped states. The specificity required to address local security challenges is structurally impossible within a unitary command.

State and local government police are not a luxury. For the farmer who cannot go to her field, they are the difference between farming and abandonment. The insecurity driving farmers off their land is not separable from the governance architecture that has been unable to address it for decades. They are expressions of the same structural failure.

Part Six: What Restructuring Actually Means

The word “restructuring” has become politically charged in Nigeria, associated with ethnic competition and regional agitation. That framing is a distraction from the substantive question it names.

Restructuring means returning fiscal authority closer to the productive activity that generates revenue. It means state governments that are financially accountable to the economies they govern, not to the allocation committee that distributes oil money. It means agricultural development decisions made by institutions with skin in the game: regional or state-level governments whose budgets reflect the health of their agricultural sectors.

It means state and local government police with the authority and accountability structures to protect the farmers in their specific communities.

It means an extension services infrastructure that is not designed in Abuja and abandoned in implementation, but designed by the institutions closest to the farmers who need it.

None of this requires abandoning national unity. The United States, India, Brazil, Germany: every large, diverse democracy that functions operates with meaningful fiscal decentralization. The argument that Nigeria is too complex or too divided for genuine federalism is precisely backwards. Nigeria’s complexity is the argument for decentralization, not against it.

The regions of the First Republic were not identical. They competed, sometimes bitterly. But that competition produced Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Ibadan, the University of Nigeria Nsukka. The centralised system that replaced them has produced a country where 21 states cannot fund 30 percent of their own operations and where farmers are afraid to go to their farms.

Conclusion: The Architecture Is the Problem

Policy Without Apology exists because we believe that honest, evidence-based analysis of African food systems is itself a form of advocacy. And the most honest thing that can be said about Nigerian agricultural policy is this.

Every programme, every intervention, every budget allocation aimed at improving Nigerian agricultural productivity is operating inside a governance architecture that is structurally hostile to its success. You cannot build a competitive, sovereign food system on a fiscal framework where the governments closest to farmers have the least money and the least power. You cannot protect farmers from insecurity with a security architecture designed for uniform national deployment. You cannot generate the regional institutional knowledge that agricultural development requires when every significant decision routes through a capital city staffed by people who are rarely in contact with the people they govern.

The Groundnut Pyramids were not built by Abuja. They were built by farmers in Kano, supported by a regional government that earned its revenue from those farmers and reinvested it in their productivity.

We do not need to recreate 1960. We need to understand why it worked, honestly assess why the system that replaced it has not, and build something informed by both realities.

That is not a political argument. It is an agricultural one.

I am telling my story because I need Nigerians to understand that insecurity is not a news headline for the people living through it. It is the end of livelihoods, the destruction of investments, the silencing of communities that were simply trying to feed this country.

And our government keeps doing the same thing and expecting different results.

We have fewer than 400,000 police officers serving a population of over 200 million people. That is one officer for every 500 citizens. But the number alone does not tell the full story. The officers we have are underpaid, poorly trained, and in many cases living in conditions we would not accept for our livestock. Very little has been invested in them as human beings, let alone as professionals.

And yet we wonder why the institution cannot hold.

The solution is not more of the same federal architecture that has consistently failed to protect Nigerians at the local level. We need state police. We need local government police. We need security structures that understand the terrain, the language, the people, and the specific dynamics of the communities they are meant to protect. A security officer from one part of the country parachuted into another is not a solution. It is an arrangement designed to fail.

This is also a conversation about restructuring.

The best period of documented progress in Nigerian history was under the regional system of government. Regions competed. They invested. They built institutions that served their specific populations with a degree of accountability that the current unitary system has never replicated. The military dismantled that system and we have been paying for it ever since.

I am a strong advocate for restructuring and I will say it without apology. The current architecture is a failed experiment. It has failed in security. It has failed in agriculture. It has failed in education and infrastructure and economic development. Continuing to tinker around the edges while leaving the fundamental structure intact is the definition of the same thinking producing the same outcomes.

Agriculture cannot grow in a country where farmers are afraid to go to their farms. Where the risk calculation for planting a crop includes the possibility of being kidnapped or killed before harvest. Where women who form the backbone of food production in this country are not safe in the fields their families have farmed for generations.

While elections matter and must be taken seriously, I want to call on Nigerians to also demand a referendum on insecurity and government restructuring. Not a committee. Not a white paper. A genuine, enforceable conversation about the architecture of this country and whether it is structurally capable of protecting its citizens.

Because if it is not, we must change it.

The children being kidnapped did not choose this. The farmers chased out of their fields did not choose this. The teachers dying in did not choose this.

We owe them more than condolences.

The Question We Can’t Seem To Answer Honestly

I was not expecting to be undone by a comedian.

Theo von is not who you would typically expect to meet God through. He is loud and strange and funny in a way that is hard to explain. He grew up in Louisiana, has spoken openly about addiction, about a difficult childhood, about the kind of life that leaves marks that do not fully disappear. He is not polished. He does not speak in the careful, managed language of someone who has processed everything cleanly and arrived at tidy conclusions.

And maybe that is exactly why it landed the way it did.

He got personal. He talked about his struggles, his relationship with God. And somewhere in the middle of it he referenced a moment in scripture that I have read more times than I can count, heard preached from more pulpits than I can remember, and somehow never truly heard until a comedian from Louisiana said it out loud on a screen.

Jesus walked up to a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years and asked him a question.

Do you want to be healed?

The Question We Skip Over

Every time I have encountered that question I have treated it as rhetorical. Of course he wants to be healed. He has been lying there for thirty-eight years. The question answers itself. Move past it to the miracle.

But I am no longer sure the question is rhetorical.

The man’s answer was not yes. It was an explanation of why healing had not yet happened. There is no one to help me into the pool. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes ahead of me.

He answered a question about desire with an explanation about logistics.

Jesus did not ask the question because he did not know the answer. He asked because the man needed to hear himself answer it. Because the distance between what our mouths say and what our hearts mean is sometimes the entire distance between where we are and where God is trying to take us.

The Sickness We Have Made Comfortable

This is about the sin we have made comfortable.

The iniquity that has been with us long enough that we have stopped experiencing it as foreign. The pattern we return to not because it satisfies us but because we have forgotten what it felt like before it was there. The pleasure that costs us more than it gives us but that we have budgeted into the architecture of our lives so thoroughly that removing it would require rebuilding things we do not want to rebuild.

We have become used to being sick.

And God keeps asking if we want to be healed. In sermons we half-listen to. In quiet moments at three in the morning when the thing we said we wanted to stop doing is the thing we just did again. In the mouths of comedians who got personal on camera and accidentally cracked something open in the chest of someone watching.

Our mouths say yes. Our mouths are very good at saying yes. We have said yes in prayer, in repentance, at altars, in promises made with genuine sincerity in the aftermath of consequences we did not want.

But the heart is saying something else. The heart is rehearsing the logistics. The heart is, if we are ruthlessly honest, negotiating. Asking for healing from the condition while quietly holding onto the part that still brings something it does not want to name out loud.

Why We Stay Sick

Healing requires loss. This is the part nobody preaches about with enough honesty.

The man at the pool, if healed, loses his explanation. He loses the identity that thirty-eight years have built. He has to become someone new, someone without the condition at the center. And newness requires the death of the familiar even when the familiar is painful.

This is why sin is so specifically difficult to release. Not always because the pleasure is so great. We stay because the sick version of ourselves is a version we know how to be. The healed version is someone we have not yet met and cannot guarantee we will recognize when we arrive.

Christ Is Still Asking

Jesus did not walk away when the man answered with logistics instead of yes. He healed him anyway. As if the gap between what the mouth says and what the heart means is not a disqualification. As if Christ is familiar enough with the complexity of human wanting to work with what is actually there.

And then he found the man later and said something that should sit with us.

See, you are well. Sin no more, lest something worse happen to you.

The healing is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of a different kind of accountability.

I am guilty of this more than I would like to admit. There are places in my life where Christ has been asking if I want to be healed and my mouth has said yes and my heart has said not yet.

But Christ is still asking. After all of it. He is still walking up to the mat. He already knows what the heart is saying underneath the explanation. And he is asking anyway.

I hope I get to a place where the words that leave my mouth and the ones my heart utters are one and the same. I am not fully there. But I want to be honest about that because I think there are people reading this who are not fully there either.

Christ is still asking.

Bringing God’s Wealth to the Nations.

There is a question that has quietly destroyed more potential than failure ever has.

It is not asked by enemies. It is not whispered by critics. It is asked by ordinary people standing at the edge of an ordinary moment, looking down at what is in their hands, doing the math between what they have and what is needed, and arriving at the conclusion before the miracle has had a chance to speak.

The question is this.

What is this among so many?

It was Andrew who asked it. Standing in a crowd of five thousand hungry people, having located the only available food in the vicinity, a boy's lunch of five loaves and two fish, he brought his arithmetic to Jesus. What is this among so many? It was not a faithless question in the way we typically mean faithless. Andrew was the one who went looking. He was the one who found the boy. He did the work of searching and the work of asking and the work of bringing what he found to the right person. And then, at the very threshold of the miracle, he discounted it.

He did not refuse to offer it. He offered it with an asterisk. He presented the provision with its own inadequacy pre-attached. Here is what I found. It is not enough. I am already telling you it is not enough before you have even touched it.

And Jesus took it anyway. Blessed it anyway. Multiplied it anyway. Fed five thousand people anyway. With twelve baskets left over as a specific, unnecessary, almost argumentative abundance. As if the excess was the point. As if God wanted to make clear that the limitation was never in the loaves. It was in the assessment.

The Arithmetic We Do Before We Offer

We are all Andrew in this story more than we would like to admit.

Not because we are faithless. Not because we are unwilling. But because we are reasonable. Because we live in a world that rewards accurate assessment and punishes overconfidence and has taught us, through a thousand small corrections, to know our limits before we run into them.

And so we apply limits to things that were never meant to be limited by our assessment.

We look at the business idea in its early form, half-developed, under-resourced, not yet coherent enough to explain to a serious person, and we ask what is this among so many. We look at the gift we have been given, the specific and unusual capacity that does not fit neatly into any existing category, and we ask what is this among so many. We look at the article we want to write, the organisation we want to build, the conversation we want to start, and we measure it against the scale of the need, and the gap between what we have and what is required is so large that we pre-attach the asterisk before we have even begun.

Here is what I found. It is not enough.

The tragedy is not that the assessment is wrong, exactly. Five loaves and two fish genuinely cannot feed five thousand people. The math is correct. The problem is that the math is being applied to a transaction that does not operate on the terms the math assumes. The math assumes a closed system where inputs equal outputs and the only multiplier available is human effort. But the moment you bring what is in your hand to the right set of hands, you have exited the closed system. You have introduced a variable that human arithmetic cannot account for.

The disciples did not need more fish. They needed to stop being the ones doing the calculation.

There Is Always Something In Your Hand

Moses was standing at a burning bush, barefoot, having fled Egypt in disgrace, forty years into a detour he had not planned, when God asked him a question that reframed everything.

What is that in your hand?

Not what do you wish you had. Not what would you need to feel qualified. Not what would a more suitable person be holding right now. What is in your hand. This specific thing. In this specific moment. In the hands of this specific person who does not feel like enough and has not felt like enough for four decades.

A staff. Just a stick. The tool of a shepherd, which is the occupation you take when the occupation you trained for is no longer available to you. Moses was holding the evidence of his own diminishment. The staff was not a symbol of power. It was a symbol of everything that had not worked out. And God looked at it and said, that is what I will use.

Throw it down. Pick it up. Take it to Pharaoh. Watch what I do with what you have been carrying all this time as a reminder of what you lost.

The pattern is not coincidental. It is consistent enough to be a principle. God does not wait for you to have the resources the assignment seems to require. God asks what is in your hand and then does something with that specific thing that the thing itself could never have done. The multiplication is not a reward for having enough. It is a response to the act of offering what you actually have.

But you have to open your hand.

The Parable That Does Not Comfort Us The Way We Want It To

Matthew 25 is the passage we read carefully until it becomes inconvenient and then we read quickly.

Three servants. One given five talents, one given two, one given one. The first two put their capital to work and doubled it. The third dug a hole and buried his and returned it intact at the accounting. No loss. Full preservation. Responsible stewardship by every conventional measure of risk management.

And Jesus called him wicked.

Not careless. Not unfortunate. Wicked. The same word used for genuine moral failure. Because the kingdom's accounting is not the world's accounting, and what looks like prudent preservation in the world's ledger looks like theft in the kingdom's. You were given something that was meant to move. You stopped it from moving. You have stolen the fruit of everything it was meant to produce.

And then the line that should sit uncomfortably in every person who has buried their talent in the name of waiting for the right moment.

Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten.

To him who has, more will be given. From him who has not, even what he has will be taken.

This is not cruelty. It is a description of how activation works. The person who has is the person who has put what was given to them into motion. The person who has not is the person who has preserved what was given to them in a form that produces nothing. And the kingdom does not reward the preservation of potential. It rewards the deployment of it.

The servant did not lose his talent by taking a risk. He lost it by refusing to.

What Is This Among So Many Is A Spiritual Problem Disguised As A Practical One

We treat our underestimation of what is in our hands as a resource problem. If I only had more capital, more time, more access, more platform, more credibility, more of whatever the thing is that I currently lack, then I would begin. Then I would offer. Then I would put what is in my hand into motion.

But the disciples who stood in front of a hungry crowd had access to Jesus himself and still came back with an asterisk. The problem was not the absence of the right resource. The problem was the presence of the wrong calculation. They were doing arithmetic in a moment that required faith, and the arithmetic, though accurate, was beside the point.

The pattern across every biblical account of multiplication is identical. The widow's oil in 2 Kings 4 did not run out until she ran out of vessels to pour it into. The limitation was never the oil. It was the number of containers she was willing to bring. She multiplied her own miracle by the size of her expectation. When she stopped bringing vessels, the oil stopped flowing. Not because God ran out. Because she did.

The Zarephath widow in 1 Kings 17 was collecting sticks to make a final meal before she and her son died. Elijah asked her to feed him first. What is this among so many. One meal between starvation and survival. Give it to me first. And the jar of flour and the jug of oil did not run empty for the duration of the famine. The last meal became the first of an uncountable series.

In every case the miracle was on the other side of the offering. Not before it. Not in preparation for it. After the act of releasing what was in the hand to someone whose capacity to multiply it was not constrained by the hand's assessment of its own contents.

The Closed Fist

There is a version of humility that is actually hoarding.

It presents itself as modesty. I do not want to overstate what I have. I do not want to claim more than is true. I am being realistic about my limitations. I am being responsible about my preparation. I am not yet ready.

But underneath the modesty, the hand is closed. The talent is in the ground. The loaves are still in the boy's bag. And the five thousand remain hungry while we wait to feel like enough before we offer what we have.

God is not waiting for you to feel like enough. The disciples did not feel like enough. Moses did not feel like enough. Gideon did not feel like enough. Jeremiah did not feel like enough. The not-enoughness is not a disqualification. It is almost a prerequisite. Because the not-enoughness is what makes the multiplication legible as something other than human effort. If you were enough, people might credit you. When you are clearly not enough and the thing works anyway, the only available explanation is the one that was always true.

The closed fist is the real problem. Not the inadequacy of the contents.

What Opening Your Hand Actually Requires

It requires you to release the right to pre-determine the outcome.

Andrew's asterisk was a form of control. By announcing the inadequacy before the miracle, he retained a kind of narrative ownership over the situation. If it works, the limitation I named makes the miracle more impressive. If it does not work, I already told you it would not. The asterisk is protection. It is the management of expectation as a hedge against the vulnerability of genuine hope.

Opening your hand means offering without the asterisk. It means bringing the five loaves and two fish and saying not this is not enough but this is what I have. Full stop. No pre-attached discount. No protective undervaluation. Just the honest presentation of what is actually in the hand, released into the custody of someone who can do with it what the hand cannot.

This is terrifying. Because it means the outcome is no longer yours to manage. You have given up the protection of low expectations. You have made yourself available to both the miracle and the disappointment, and you have accepted that you cannot control which one arrives. You have traded certainty of outcome for the possibility of multiplication, and that trade requires more courage than most of us have been taught to bring to ordinary moments.

But it is the only trade that produces anything worth having.

Open Your Hand

You have something.

I do not know what it is. You may not know what it is, or you may know exactly what it is and have spent a considerable amount of energy explaining to yourself why it is not enough yet, not ready yet, not the right moment yet.

But you have something. There is no human being alive who is standing in front of their life with genuinely empty hands. The parable does not entertain that possibility. The question God asks is not do you have anything. The question is what is that in your hand. The having is assumed. The question is about what you are doing with it.

The crowd is hungry. The need is real and large and your arithmetic about the gap between what you have and what is required is probably accurate. Andrew was not wrong. Five loaves and two fish cannot feed five thousand people.

But you are not the one doing the feeding.

You are the one doing the offering.

Open your hand. Bring what is in it. Release the asterisk. Stop being the one doing the math in a moment that was always meant to exceed your math.

And watch what happens in the hands of the one who has never once been limited by your assessment of your own insufficiency.

“For the vision awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”

— Habakkuk 2:3

Habakkuk was not writing poetry. He was writing a financial instrument.

He was telling a people under pressure, a people for whom the near-term evidence did not support the long-duration thesis, that the vision had a terminal value. That it would pay. That the appointed time was real even when invisible. That the cost of waiting was not evidence that the return had disappeared. It was evidence that the compounding had not yet finished.

Most people read that verse as comfort. Few read it as a framework for how to price their own lives.

This essay is an attempt to do exactly that.

The following is a thought exercise. It is an inversion designed to re-examine something most people who call themselves ambitious never stop to question.

Let us start with first principles.

The entire architecture of a life well-lived rests on a single, rarely examined assumption: that right choices compound over time. That discipline endures. That character defends. That sacrifice today multiplies into significance tomorrow. Strip that assumption away, and you are not just questioning a few personal decisions. You are dismantling the philosophical foundation of how human greatness has been built across every generation, in every culture, in every scripture.

Here is a scenario worth taking seriously.

Distraction, comfort, and short-termism have lowered the cost of abandoning your purpose so dramatically, and raised the pace of life’s noise so relentlessly, that most people can no longer credibly project who they are becoming beyond the next ninety days. Because in the time it takes you to build something meaningful, a notification arrives, a comparison paralyses, a setback discourages, or a comfortable alternative appears, and the cycle restarts. The tempo of distraction accelerates until you stop investing in what your life might produce in year ten onwards. No rational reading of scripture suggests that those investments were made so you could produce comfort for yourself and noise for your timeline. But because comfort pays immediately and purpose pays on a long-duration curve, most people continuously discount purpose and pay themselves in comfort.

Then comes the risk premium: the uncertainty of outcomes, the length of the road, the invisibility of the compounding in the early years. Someone who builds character pays in obscurity for years before the world notices anything. Someone who builds a business sacrifices income today for leverage tomorrow. When Money Stops Working

Ecclesiastes 7:12 says it plainly:

“For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.”

We understand the defense of money.

When things go wrong, money buys options.

Money creates distance between you and disaster.

Money opens doors that pressure closes.

But money runs out.

Markets collapse.

Investments fail.

Economies shift overnight.

And when the financial defense is gone, what remains?

Only what you carry on the inside.

Wisdom is the currency that holds value when every other currency fails.

You cannot print more of it.

And Joseph did not set up a prayer circle around her. He did not fast and bind the spirit of seduction. He did not try to argue her out of it or prove his righteousness through a long dramatic confrontation.

He fled.

He removed himself from the environment entirely.

That is not weakness. That is wisdom.

Because the wisest thing you can do with certain temptations is not resist them, it is refuse to be in the room where they live.

Proverbs 4:15 confirms it:

“Avoid it, do not pass by it; turn away from it and pass on.”

God is not asking you to be strong enough to withstand every trap.

He is asking you to be wise enough to stop walking into them.

Where Are You Deploying Strength When Wisdom Is What Is Needed?

This is the question I want to leave sitting with you.

Because there are situations in your life right now that are draining you not because you are weak, but because you are using the wrong tool.

You are fighting battles you were never called to fight.

You are staying in rooms you should have left a long time ago.

You are using energy trying to manage things that wisdom would have avoided entirely.

Strength says, “I can handle this.”

Wisdom says, “I do not need to be here for this.”

And Ecclesiastes 10:2 reminds us:

“A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart is at his left.”

The direction of your heart determines the quality of your decisions.

And the quality of your decisions determines the trajectory of your life.

Wisdom Is Profitable

Ecclesiastes 10:10 closes with a truth that should settle in your spirit:

Wisdom brings success.

I am writing this at past ten at night, physically exhausted from a long day on the road. My body is tired in the way bodies get tired, the kind of tired that good sleep fixes. But what I feel tonight is a different kind of tired. The emotional kind. The kind that does not go away when you close your eyes.

I had a fight with someone today. Or maybe I should say the fight finally arrived, because what happened today did not start today. It started five or six years ago, in front of Captain Cook at Afe Babalola University, when someone said one of the most painful things ever said to me. In jest, they said it. In front of another person, they said it. I remember standing there and feeling something shift. I do not want to be dramatic about it; I have known real pain, but that moment lodged itself somewhere deep and quiet, and I did what I have always been good at.

I buried it.

I told myself I was over it. I stopped thinking about it. I stopped talking about it(I never spoke about it). And then I kept my promise so well that I genuinely believed the thing was gone; dissolved into the past like everything else that does not serve you. But here is what I have learned tonight: a burial is not the same as a release. The thing was never gone. It was just underground, waiting.

Half a decade later, I started talking to the same person again. And I did not notice, not immediately, not consciously but the thing I buried started breathing again. It does that. Proximity brings it back. Familiarity is the shovel that digs it up.

I know pain. I know it well enough that I made myself a promise: I would not be the person who causes it in someone else. I think about the words that come out of my mouth the way an editor thinks about words on a page. What I say to you is usually the third or fourth version of what I first thought to say. I hold things back, refine them, ask myself if they will land as wounds. I am deliberate about this. I am careful.

And yet.

Today showed me that careful is not enough. Intentionality is not a guarantee. I caused hurt; willingly or unwillingly, it does not matter. The distinction only lives in my head, not in the person I hurt. The pain lands the same regardless of what I meant.

That is a hard thing to sit with. But I am sitting with it.

I am not the best at speaking my truth in the moment. I get better at it in writing, there is something about the slowness of it, the ability to say the thing exactly as it is, without the static of a conversation. So let me say the true thing here:

I think I have been confusing growth with healing.

I am obsessed with becoming better. Better at my work, better in my thinking, more effective, more capable. Growth, for me, has always been about movement; always forward, always building something. But tonight I am wondering if some of the things I have been carrying were never going to be outrun by progress. They are not problems to be solved or inefficiencies to be optimised. They are wounds. And wounds do not heal because you move fast. They heal because you stop, look at them honestly, and do the slow work.

What does that slow work look like for me? I think it starts with God. I am the kind of person who believes that some of life’s harder questions; why did this happen, why did this person do this, why did this hurt so much, deserve to be taken somewhere bigger than my own head. So I will sit with those questions. I will ask them honestly. And I will trust that the answer, when it comes, will leave me lighter than I am tonight.

I do not know how to hate. I mean that. I have looked for the gear and I do not have it. But I have been doing something that might be just as corrosive: I have been holding on, quietly, under the pretense of letting go.

Burying your hurt is not releasing it. It is just storing it where you cannot see it; until the conditions are right, until the right person walks back into your life, and then it surfaces with all the freshness of something that happened yesterday. Not five years ago. Yesterday.

So the real question; the one I am asking myself tonight, is not how do I move on but how do I actually let go? How do I open my hands and release something that I convinced myself I had already put down?

I do not have a clean answer. But I think it starts with honesty. With stopping the burial ritual. With saying out loud: this hurt me, it still hurts me, and I am choosing now, not five years ago, to actually deal with it.

A man must learn to deal with his pain. Or he finds himself holding on to that same pain years later, surprised by its weight, wondering how something he buried so deeply ever found its way back to the surface.

I am not publishing this because I have figured it out. I am publishing this because I have not, and because I believe there is something important in saying so. Vulnerability is not the same as weakness. Naming the wound is the beginning of treating it.

The cost of living is not waiting for your income to catch up. The opportunities in your field are not holding themselves open while you “stabilize.” The people you are competing with: for jobs, contracts, clients, visibility, relevance; are not pausing.

Time moves. Conditions shift. And the version of you that was adequate in 2020 is not automatically adequate in 2026.

You cannot meet expanding demands with a fixed capacity. You cannot solve harder problems with the same thinking that produced them. You cannot occupy a larger space in life than the one your current growth has earned you.

The world is not waiting. And some needs only answer to growth.

What Stagnation Actually Looks Like

The problem with stagnation is that it rarely announces itself.

It doesn’t show up as failure. It shows up as sameness. The same financial ceiling you hit every month. The same circular conversations with yourself about what you want to do “eventually.” The same skills, the same circle, the same perspective just carried forward into a new year with a slightly different date on the calendar.

It looks like still waiting for the right moment to start. Still carrying the same fear that stopped you two years ago. Still letting the same small version of yourself make decisions for the larger life you are capable of.

You are not lazy. In many cases, you are working extremely hard. But working hard inside a fixed ceiling is not growth. It is effort without trajectory.

And effort without trajectory is exhausting in a very particular way, because you are spending everything you have and still ending up in the same place.

Growth Is Not What Most People Think It Is

When people hear “growth,” they think money. A bigger salary. A new income stream. Financial freedom.

Money matters. But it is a consequence of growth, not the definition of it.

Real growth is capacity. It is the gap between who you were twelve months ago and who you are today. Can you carry more responsibility? Can you think more clearly under pressure? Can you solve problems that would have defeated you before? Can you hold a bigger vision without collapsing under the uncertainty of it?

Real growth is also depth. What you now understand that you didn’t before. The relationships you have built that are genuinely reciprocal. The experiences that changed how you see the world, and by extension, what you are able to do in it.

Because here is the thing that doesn’t get said enough: your life can only expand to the level of your awareness. Not your wishes. Not your prayers alone. Your actual, developed, tested capacity.

That capacity only grows one way. Through deliberate, sometimes uncomfortable, extension of yourself beyond where you currently are.

The Comfortable Lie We Tell Ourselves

“Not yet.”

Two words. Enormous damage.

Not yet stable enough. Not yet ready enough. Not yet the right time. Not yet sure enough about the outcome to take the risk.

I understand the impulse. Nigeria is genuinely difficult. The economic pressure is real. The uncertainty is real. I am not dismissing that. But I am also not willing to pretend that “not yet” is always a response to circumstances. More often, it is a response to fear dressed in the language of wisdom.

The person who says “not yet, I’m still building my foundation” for four consecutive years is not being patient. They are avoiding the moment of real reckoning; the one where they have to test themselves against something that might actually push back.

At some point, “not yet” stops being caution and starts being a lifestyle. And a “not yet” lifestyle is just a long way of saying no to your own potential.

What Growth Will Cost You

I won’t insult you by making this sound easy.

Growth will cost you comfort. The familiar routines, the low-risk choices, the version of yourself that other people already know and expect, growth will ask you to revise all of it.

It will cost you time. You will have to invest hours into learning, building, and becoming that you could have spent consuming, scrolling, or simply resting.

It will cost you certainty. You will have to make decisions without knowing how they end. You will have to start things before you are ready, because ready is usually just a story we tell ourselves to justify waiting.

And it will cost you the validation of everyone around you. Not because the people in your life don’t want good things for you, many of them do. But growth often looks strange to people who have chosen not to grow. It makes them uncomfortable. And that discomfort sometimes comes out as discouragement.

Pay the cost anyway.

Because the alternative; remaining exactly where you are while life continues to expand around you, costs more. It just charges you quietly, in lost years, lost confidence, and lost potential rather than in one visible moment of risk.

A Final Thought

There is too much at stake for you to remain the same.

Not for the world. For you. For the people your growth will eventually reach. For the life that is possible on the other side of your own expansion.

You did not come this far, through everything this country has demanded of you just to stay alive — to plateau.

The moment something becomes difficult, our instinct is to ask for escape, not endurance. We want God to intervene immediately, to fix it quickly, to resolve it cleanly.

But God does not operate on urgency.

He operates on purpose.

There is a reason for everything. A reason things unfold the way they do. A reason doors open when they do and close when they must.

The Bible reminds us that He controls the times and the seasons. He sees the beginning and the end at once. What feels delayed to us is often perfectly aligned in His plan.

Waiting, then, is not wasted time.

There are things we pray for that we are not yet ready to carry. There are promises that require a version of us that has been shaped by time, discipline, and trust.

God is not late.

He is precise.

And what He has prepared for you will not be diminished because it took time. If anything, it will be richer, fuller, and exactly what you need when it arrives.

So stay steady.

Trust Him.

The Power of Exposure and Perspective

I have come to believe that perspective is everything.

How we consume information and how we process it determines how we move through life. Two people can witness the same event, read the same book, or hear the same message and walk away with completely different conclusions.

The difference is perspective.

Perspective shapes interpretation.

Interpretation shapes decisions.

And decisions shape life.

What troubles me sometimes is that we live at the peak of information dissemination. Never before in human history has knowledge been so accessible. Entire libraries sit inside our pockets.

Yet somehow, we have also found ways to remain deeply ignorant.

Information is everywhere, but understanding is rare.

This is because exposure does not happen automatically. It must be pursued. Knowledge must be chased intentionally. Curiosity must be cultivated.

The pursuit of knowledge is not optional for anyone serious about growth. It is a responsibility.

Our limitations are often governed not by ability, but by imagination.

What we believe is possible for our lives is often tied to what we have been exposed to. If your environment only shows you small possibilities, your vision becomes small as well. If you never encounter different ideas, different cultures, or different ways of thinking, your world begins to shrink.

Exposure expands imagination.

A conversation can change perspective.

A book can expand possibility.

A new environment can challenge assumptions you didn’t even realize you carried.

This is why it is important to deliberately seek new perspectives.

Meet people who think differently from you.

Read widely.

Listen carefully.

Ask questions.

Growth rarely happens in intellectual comfort zones.

When our perspectives expand, so do our dreams. Our vision stretches. Our imagination becomes capable of holding possibilities that once seemed unrealistic.

And with that new perspective, life itself begins to look different.

The world did not change.

We live in a time where ease is treated as a sign.

If something feels hard, we assume it must be wrong. If something stretches us, frustrates us, or demands sacrifice, we start wondering if we have taken the wrong path.

It is popular now to say we want a life without stress. A life without pressure. A life where everything flows smoothly.

But lately, I have come to understand something important.

Ease is not a barometer.

It is not proof that we are on the right path, and difficulty is not proof that we are on the wrong one.

If ease were the measure, then most meaningful things in life would never exist.

Growth is uncomfortable.

Discipline is uncomfortable.

Faith is uncomfortable.

Even love, when practiced honestly, requires sacrifice.

When Christ calls us to follow Him, He never promises ease. He promises presence. Guidance. Strength.

Those are very different things.

The danger of using ease as our compass is that we start avoiding the very environments that produce maturity. We retreat from challenges that were meant to refine us. We interpret friction as failure rather than formation.

But friction is often where clarity emerges.

Think about the things that have shaped you most. The lessons that stayed. The habits that lasted. The convictions that deepened.

Very few of them came from comfort.

They came from moments that forced you to grow.

So if ease is not the barometer, what is?

Alignment.

Alignment with truth.

Alignment with purpose.

Alignment with the direction God is calling you toward.

Sometimes alignment feels peaceful. Other times it feels demanding. But peace and ease are not the same thing.

Peace can exist in the middle of effort.

Peace can exist in the middle of uncertainty.

The real question is not “Is this easy?”

The real question is “Is this right?”

And that answer is rarely discovered by comfort alone.

Why can’t I ask for help?

This is the question I’ve been asking myself all week.

For most of my life, I’ve been used to facing problems alone. When something goes wrong, my instinct is to deal with it quietly. Figure it out. Carry it. Resolve it without involving anyone else.

For a long time, I thought this was a strength.

Now I’m not so sure.

Part of me thinks I am this way because I’m guarded. I don’t easily trust people with my vulnerabilities. Another part of me believes I have simply convinced myself that others cannot truly help.

Maybe they won’t understand.

Maybe they can’t handle it.

Maybe it’s easier if I just deal with it myself.

But if I am honest, there may also be something else hiding beneath it.

Perhaps I have carried a quiet savior complex. The idea that I should be the one helping everyone else. The one fixing problems. The one people can lean on.

And maybe asking for help feels like it would shatter that image.

Because the truth is, I am used to carrying people.

Physical needs.

Financial burdens.

Mental and emotional struggles.

I have often found myself stepping in, trying to be present, trying to solve things. And over time, I realize this posture has shaped many of my relationships.

I give a lot.

And sometimes the relationship gives very little back.

I have accepted behavior that I should not have tolerated. I have allowed people into my life who only know how to take.

I have “friends” who only reach out when they need money. Once the need is met, they disappear again, until the next time they require something.

That cycle used to frustrate me. Now it simply teaches me.

But in the middle of all that, there are people I am grateful for.

The few individuals who have not taken advantage of my presence. The people who have been patient with me. The ones who have found ways to create space where my vulnerability feels safe.

They have reminded me that not everyone approaches relationships as transactions.

Even so, asking for help still feels unfamiliar.

Even talking openly about the challenges I face feels difficult. I am still learning how to do that. Slowly. Imperfectly.

But I am beginning to understand something important.

God never designed us to carry life alone.

Scripture says in Galatians 6:2, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

That command does not only apply to the people receiving help. It also applies to those of us who must learn to receive it.

Because if we refuse help entirely, we deny others the opportunity to obey that command.

So perhaps learning to ask for help is not weakness.

Perhaps it is obedience.

I am not there yet. But I am hoping to get there gradually. And I hope that when I do, there will be people in my life who are strong enough, patient enough, and kind enough to handle it.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about something simple.

What value do I offer the world today?

Not in the grand sense. Not in the future-tense version of myself that has achieved certain milestones. But today.

What value did I offer in the conversations I had?

What value did I offer in the work I delivered?

What value did I offer to the people who crossed my path?

It’s easy to think about value only in professional terms. What business are you building? What product are you selling? What service are you offering?

But value is much broader than that.

Value can be clarity.

Value can be encouragement.

Value can be honesty when others are avoiding the truth.

Value can be competence in small tasks that make other people’s lives easier.

If we are honest, many of us move through our days mostly thinking about what we can get.

Recognition.

Money.

Comfort.

Opportunities.

But rarely do we ask: what am I adding?

This shift in thinking is changing the way I approach ordinary moments.

When I enter a room, I now try to ask myself: how can I leave this place better than I met it?

Sometimes the answer is excellence. Doing the job well. Sometimes it is presence. Listening when someone needs to speak. Sometimes it is wisdom. Saying the thing that helps others see more clearly.

And as a Christian, this question becomes even more important.

Christ calls us into service.

Service is not only charity or mission trips. It is the daily posture of asking how your life can benefit others. It is offering your gifts, your discipline, your attention, and your integrity as tools that make the world function better.

When service becomes central, value becomes the natural outcome.

The interesting thing is that when you obsess over what you can give, you stop worrying as much about what you will receive.

People notice value.

Opportunities follow value.

Trust grows around value.

And slowly, a reputation forms not because you chased it, but because you consistently made things better for others.

So lately, this has been my quiet obsession.

Not success.

Not visibility.

But value.

At the end of each day, I want to be able to answer one question honestly:

Did my presence make someone’s life better today?

Sometimes clarity does not arrive in silence.

Sometimes it arrives in a phone call.

This morning, I had a conversation with a friend that gave me clarity about something I had struggled with just the night before. I had gone to bed confused. I was unsure how to move forward after repeatedly running into roadblocks.

I had asked God for help, but at that moment the path still felt unclear.

Then the conversation happened.

Nothing dramatic. Just two people talking. Yet somewhere in that exchange, the answer began to reveal itself. The confusion started to lift. The next step became visible.

It reminded me of something important.

God is deliberate with us when we ask for help.

He does not always respond the way we expect. Sometimes we imagine the answer will come through a sudden realization in prayer, or through a clear moment of revelation.

But often, His answers come through ordinary channels.

Through a conversation.

Through a friend.

Through a question someone asks that reframes everything.

This is why we must remain both expectant and attentive.

When you ask God for help, do not assume the answer must come in a specific form. It might be a set of instructions. It might be a redirection. Sometimes He is not answering the question you asked, but helping you see that you need to ask a different one.

But one thing remains true.

When you ask God for help sincerely, He does not leave you alone.

He listens.

He responds.

He guides.

The responsibility on our side is to keep asking, to remain open, and to pay attention when the answer begins to unfold.

Sometimes the breakthrough you are praying for is one conversation away.

And sometimes, all you really needed was a call from a friend.

There is a saying: knowledge is power.

It is not just a cliché. It carries weight.

When purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable.

Abuse of time.

Abuse of gifts.

Abuse of influence.

Abuse of opportunity.

Too many of us walk the earth without clarity about why we are here. So we default to the loudest messages around us. Chase wealth. Chase comfort. Chase validation. Feed the ego.

When self becomes the center, everything else becomes a tool.

But to understand that service is at the core of identity would liberate many of us.

It does not matter what job you hold. It does not matter where you work or what business you run. Before titles and income, there is calling.

And Christ made it clear.

First, the Great Commission. We are called to bring people to Him. To reflect Him. To speak of Him. To live in a way that draws others toward light.

Second, we are called into service of one another.

Not selectively. Not when convenient. But intentionally.

The real question is not whether you are called to serve.

The question is: how have you been called to serve?

How does your obedience find expression in today’s world?

What problem breaks your heart?

What burden refuses to leave you?

Because God does not always speak through lightning and spectacle. Often, He speaks through burden. Through holy discontent. Through the quiet dissatisfaction you feel when something is not as it should be.

We must be willing to tarry in prayer. To ask. To listen.

But we must also be willing to act.

Clarity does not always come before movement. Often, clarity comes through movement. Through trying. Through serving. Through doing.

Do not justify idleness by claiming you are “still discovering your purpose.”

Purpose is rarely found in isolation. It is found in service.

Start somewhere. Serve someone. Be useful.

God has a way of speaking to those already in motion.

We live in a time where ignorance is expensive. We cannot afford to drift through life undefined. Pursue knowledge with vigor. Seek wisdom for execution. Pray for alignment.

Because when you know why you are here, you stop misusing what you carry.

And when service becomes central, everything else falls into order.

This is me thinking out loud.

I have never been one to share my emotions freely. I am used to being guarded. Used to holding things in. Used to appearing steady even when there is turbulence underneath.

But somehow, writing here has been different.

It feels easier to be vulnerable with strangers on the internet than with people who know me personally. Maybe because there is less expectation. Maybe because there is less performance.

Lately, I’ve found myself doing things I promised I wouldn’t do.

Habits I thought I had conquered. Patterns I believed I had matured beyond. And it has forced me into an uncomfortable realization: there is a limit to what I can will myself to do or not do.

I used to think discipline alone would carry me.

But the older I get, the clearer it becomes.

In the words of the Apostle Paul, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Desire is not the same as transformation.

It takes time to unlearn what the body has practiced for years. It takes time to replace old rhythms with new ones. And sometimes, the frustration of failing again tempts you to withdraw entirely.

But I am learning something deeper.

I cannot simply speak Jesus. I must surrender.

And surrender is not poetic. It is practical.

It looks like praying when I don’t feel like it.

It looks like studying His word when distraction feels easier.

It looks like admitting I cannot do this alone.

Scripture says, “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

That is what I need right now.

Healing.

Deliverance.

Realignment.

And maybe that is what you need too.

We do not run from the Father when we fail. We run toward Him.

Even if correction stings.

Even if conviction feels heavy.

Even if surrender feels unclear.

Turning away only deepens the gap. Running toward Him closes it.

If you can relate to this, know this: struggle does not disqualify you. Weakness does not remove you from His love.

We will overcome.

Not by willpower alone.

Not by image management.

But by surrender.

His love is enough.

His word is enough.

His grace is enough.

Let’s keep seeking Christ.

And trust that as we do, everything else will find its proper place.
