There’s a verbal agreement in principle between the Saudi club and Man City at 61 million euros fee for Reijnders. The deal totally depends on the player’s decision. Now this raises a very important question: Why would City decide to sell Reijnders just after he arrived last summer?

Economically…

After analyzing the graph, we can see that man City originally purchased Reijnders last summer from AC Milan for 55 million pounds. Now after one season, he’s going to Al Quadsiah for 60 million pounds. We can get the gross transfer fee difference 60 - 55 = 5 million euros. If we distribute the transfer fee across Reindeer’s current City contract, we can get 55 / 5 = 11 million euros per season. Now as he just came for one season, there are 44 million left book value, this is where City actually spend their money for nothing. If we add that 11 million first season amortization to the gross transfer fee profit and cut the salary for him at the first season which is approximately 11.96 million euros, we get the actual accounting profit 11 + 5 -11.96 = 4.04 million euros.

In an economic perspective as I calculated in the last paragraph, City does make some money if Reijnders eventually go. Even though they paid a big price to sign him from AC Milan, they still receive a higher price from Saudi after one season of underperformance.

Is Selling Him Actually the Right Thing to do?

Many fans might question the fact that Reijnders had just arrived, the club needs to give him more time and trust, etc… But actually, if we get pass the front cover, City can benefit a lot from selling him. First, is the transfer fee profit I mentioned before. Second is the arrival of Elliot Anderson, this new midfielder might further squeeze the minutes Reijnders have on the pitch making his market value to fall even more. This means if City sell him later, they may get a much less profit than the 16 million euros they get this season economically. Then is opportunity cost, selling him now can generate a fair amount of budget immediately to fund future transfers who might fit Maresca’s new tactical blueprint better than he does right now.

So after all from my perspective, this is the right decision benefiting both the club’s financial situation and the player’s future development. Though Saudi Pro League’s competitiveness aren’t as high as Premier League, at least he can get more minutes than staying at Manchester City and being pressed on the bench.

Mr Billionaire - Saudi’s Factor

Now you may wonder why could Al Quasdiah fund this transfer with such a high fee without getting bankrupt. Not only Al Quasdiah, many more other clubs in Saudi are some of the richest in the world. This is because they are directly funded and owned my the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is the state sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. And if you know actually how much each year Saudi can make from fossil fuels, you won’t be surprised to know this fund is one of the largest economic funds in the entire world, worth hundreds of billions of dollars alone.

This will hugely make City prefer Al Quadsiah as their buyer over other clubs interested in Reijnders such as Nottingham Forest. A Saudi buyer can also strengthen City’s negotiating position because it won’t be hard to convince Al Qudsiah to pay 61 million euros for him, as City knows Saudi has literally useless money to spend, this means they can afford any sensible price they require for Reijnders.

Conclusion

So after all this bunch of analysis, was this a good deal for Manchester City? The 60 million fee doesn't look that good compared with City’s original 55 million cost of buying him. But because of amortization, the big picture is slightly a little bit better than the headlines suggest.

Liverpool have reportedly shown interest in signing the PSG winger Bradley Barcola, with PSG valuing him at around 170 million euros. However, at that price-tag, Barcola isn’t yet a world-class winger who can change the game. So that number immediately raises one question: Is this 170 million just silly money, or could it actually make economic sense?

The Deal

Liverpool’s interest in Barcola actually started just when the summer window started. Initial discussions started just around the 100 million euros price tag, but PSG pushed the deal higher and higher throughout the window and now, the player valuation rose to the incredible 170 million euros. Liverpool on the other hand, had made it clear currently the maximum amount they will pay for this player is 140 million euros. This huge gap creates difficulty for negotiations to continue.

If we get a look at Barcola’s current contract, PSG still have two years contract remaining with Barcola expiring at June 2028, plus he’s only 23 years old. Making PSG not that urgent to sell this player or renew his contract.

What Would 145M Euros Actually Cost

A 170 million euros transfer doesn’t mean Liverpool simply lose 170 million right now. As Barcola has already agreed on all personal terms with Liverpool, they will sign a 5 year contract if PSG agreed to let go. If we distribute the transfer fee across the contract length, we can calculate the annual amortization for this transfer 170 / 5 = 34 million euros per season. If we also add the agreed annual salary (7 million), we can get the total annual commitment 34 + 7 = 41 million euros per season. This makes the 170 million euros look different from the actual annual financial burden.

What Are Liverpool Actually Buying

If Bradley Barcola eventually joins Liverpool, he could replace current left wingers like Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha. In the tactical side, he actually looks more like Luis Diaz, who is currently the left-winger for Bayern Munich and a crucial player for Bayern’s attacking trio along with Harry Kane and Michael Olise.

If we analyze the graph, Barcola’s statistics are actually much more brighter than Liverpool’s current winger. If he’s paired up with Florian Wirtz, Liverpool can actually find the correct left-flank solution after Diaz’s departure. He also will offer creativity to the wing unlike Gakpo who only knows how to cut inwards, making it very predictable to other full-backs in Europe.

The Highest Price Possible: 145M Euros

PSG reportedly brought Barcola for only 45 + 5 million euros, totally 50 million euros in August 2023. Now if Liverpool paid 145 million euros, 145 - 45 =100 million euros accounting profit just after 3 years. But Liverpool also aren’t just paying for what Barcola’s worth today as he’s just 23 years old. They are paying for his age, his future 5 years of performance, his potential resale value, the scarcity of top wingers in modern football and also their urgent need for a reliable winger who can threaten opponent full-backs.

The Risk

The best case is Barcola becoming an elite attacker and brings Liverpool various trophies, which makes the fee paid for him worth it. A relatively acceptable case is that he does become a good player, but not yet a world-class winger and not that consistent in big games. The worst case for this transfer is that Barcola doesn’t really fit into the team, or experienced tough illnesses like the outcome for Alexander Isak’s Liverpool transfer last summer.

The most important thing isn’t whether Barcola is a good player. It is whether this huge 170 million euros fee still leave enough room for him to get use to a new system, higher intensity, and the room to underperform sometimes without making the whole thing a failure.

Conclusion

170 million for Barcola sounds ridiculous, even though it is ridiculous. But once we break down the amortization, wages, expected performance, and predict the potential resale value which in my perspective is something around 100 million, we can find many more things hidden behind the headlines.

For soooooooo long time, Real Madrid had been heavily linked with Rodri. Many media reporters even announced Rodri will soon transfer to Real. However, After Manchester City rejected the bid of Real Madrid for Rodri and waited for other clubs to enter the race, Barca started to change the situation. They reportedly are determined to sign Rodri and prepared a high fee for him.

At the same time, Madrid looks like they already left the race for Rodri… and shifted their goal towards another defensive midfielder - Martin Zubimendi from Arsenal. Reports suggest Arsenal could demand up to 90 million euros for the Spanish midfielder.

But this is more than a simple transfer story. For Real Madrid it is a question of where to spend their money. If Rodri is no longer available, should Real Madrid use their budget for Zubimendi, or keep the money and trust the current midfielders in the squad?

From Rodri to Zubimendi

Madrid (or Jose Moruinho)’s original plan, is to sign Rodri for a maximum amount of 60 million euros from Man City. Now after missing the deal to Barça, the potential new plan could be to sign Zubimendi for 90 million euros from Arsenal. But this makes us think whether Zubimendi is a good alternative to Rodri, or is it just the most available replacement they could possibly get?

If Real eventually signed Rodri, it could be a huge tactical plus for Jose Mourinho. He can fit perfectly to the number 6 under Mourinho’s 4231 due to his physicality, ball-playing ability, and defensive stability. He can be a hard-working double-pivot passer along with Valverde or Tchouameni to destroy the opponent possession before they reached the box. He also will be a good place to start Madrid’s counter-attack by his excellent vertical long-range passing ability. He can offer attacking creativity when they can’t break opponent’s defense line through traditional blows.

Zubimendi is a pure tempo controller who recycle and sustain ball-possession regularly. He sits right in front of the backline, and can receive the ball under pressure and pass line-breaking passes right to the attacking three, letting them to use their speed to score goals. His defensive work is also reliable, using smart anticipation rather than pure physical duels.

90M Euros Question

90 million euros is a huge investment, but the fee alone doesn’t tell us everything. If we just imagine Madrid sign Zubimendi on a 5 year contract. Then we can calculate the annual amortization 90 / 5 = 18 million euros per year. So Madrid would need to afford approximately 18 million euros before any other things like wage, performance bonuses, etc…

This comparison actually shows us something interesting. Zubimendi is 30 million euros more expensive than Rodri at first, but his lower salary and longer contract (predicted due to his younger age) brings his annual cost to only 22.56 million euros, approximately 5.8 million euros cheaper than Rodri’s 28.37 million euros.

Opportunity Cost

This is the part I mention about almost every article, opportunity cost. If Madrid spend 90 million on Zubimendi, that 90 million can’t be used anywhere else. That could actually mean another midfielder, future transfer opportunity, contract renewal with core players, or simply just keeping the money there. So Madrid aren’t asking whether they can afford Zubimendi, they are thinking about whether Zubimendi is the best place that 90 million can be used.

Why Madrid Might Sign Him or Walk Away

There are still several reasons Madrid could go for Zubimendi even for 90 million euros. First, is their immediate midfield need, as Real Madrid’s midfield currently don’t have anyone who can control the tempo of the game. When to slow down, and when to accelerate for counter-attacks. Then is Zubimendi’s proven performance at the Premier League. If you can play fluently in the highest level of football, playing in Laliga wouldn’t be a big problem. He is also a Spanish hometown player, although it isn’t something that important to think about currently.

BUT, 90 million creates huge risks. First, Arsenal have little reason to sell him. They have a contract expiring till 2030, so even if Real don’t buy, they won’t risk to lose him for a cheap price. Also, Zubimendi isn’t Rodri, he hasn’t been a world class midfielder yet. Then, is the 90 million euros opportunity cost as I mentioned before.

The Real Madrid Model

This is the most interesting part. Real Madrid has normally been extremely careful about when and how much they spend. They have frequently looked for free agents, young players before their peak value, players approaching the end of their contracts, cheap buy-back clauses, players who have potential resale value in the future, and players who have long-term sporting value.

So, paying 90 million euros for a 27 year old midfielder would be a huge gamble. They clearly can afford 90 million for Zubimendi. The question is whether 90 million euros for Zubimendi fits the club’s long-term financial strategy.

Half a year ago, Crystal Palace paid 35 million pounds to sign Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur. Everton signed Dwight McNeil from Burnley for 20 million pounds 4 years ago. Now, the two clubs decided they no longer wanted the two players, so they agreed on a swap deal for the two players between these clubs. Neither club had to pay the other a transfer fee. But if no clubs created money, what is the value of this deal?

The Transfer Details

This isn’t any kind of traditional transfer where one club pays a fee to bring a player to their squad, this is an exchange of player between two parties. Neither club receives anything other than the player, but both clubs are abandoning something with economic value.

Palace’s Side: What Happened to the 35 M Johnson?

Palace spent 35 million at the start of this year to sign Johnson from Spurs. However, in the 26 games he played in all competitions and 13 starts, he scored 0 goals and only provided 2 assists. This isn’t something the manager and fans have expected. So what will happen to a player purchased for such a price but didn’t perform as expected? The answer is leave.

There is something called the sunk cost in economy. As Palace knows if they continue to hold on to Johnson simply because they paid a lot for it might actually cause it to drop more market value as his poor performance. Palace can’t get the 35 million back just because they paid 35 million. So Palace is actually evaluating is Johnson worth more than what McNeil is expected to be worth to the team? Everton’s Side: Why Give Up McNeil?

Traditional Transfers happen like this. A club pays another club a certain fee, the other club agrees to let the player go to the club, and the other club receives the transfer fee. However, a swap deal is different. The two club agrees to exchange one player for another. There is no money paid, no nothing except the player.

But economically, Johnson’s value isn’t 0, McNeil’s value also isn’t 0. The clubs are negotiating and deciding the relative value of the two players to the other club, not agreeing on a cash price. This is the interesting point of this deal.

The Future Value Problem

If Johnson succeeds at Everton, they could have got a player whose market value increases significantly. If not, they could have paid a useless player four years of salary. The same goes with McNeil. This swap deal is a bet. If both players succeeded, this deal benefited both clubs, if neither of them succeeded, the deal is simply moving the problem from one club to another.

Everton bets that Johnson’s future value to the club might be bigger that McNeil’s future value. Palace bets that McNeil’s future use to the club worths more than Johnson’s future value. There aren’t a winner or a loser in this transfer, it is simply the different player’s value evaluation for the two clubs.

Everton and Palace are exchanging two players who values have changed since their original purchases. The 35 million for Johnson and the 20 million for McNeil. Till now, Real Madrid has spend 230 million euros in total this transfer window, their highest window since the summer of 2019. They also broke their history transfer record by spending a total of 140 million euros on Yan Diomande. At the same time, the club generated around 110 million euros from academy player sales and nearly 80 million euros by sell-on clauses for players in other clubs. So what is Real Madrid actually trying to do in this transfer window?

The 125 + 15M Euros Gamble — Yan Diomande

Real Madrid’s bomba deal this summer is signing Yan Diomande for a total fee of 140 million euros, signed a 7 year deal running until 2033. He departures RB Leipzig at just 19 years old. This breaks the Madrid transfer record, previously held by Jude Bellingham’s 127 million euros arrival in 2023. The annual amortization can be calculated by 140M / 7 = 20M per year. Adding his annual 9 million per year salary, the total annual commitment is 29 million euros.

So why does Diomande worth 135 million euros? First and most obviously, he perfectly met every expectation Mourinho has for a winger. He is fast, he can exploit opponent’s defending lines, etc… If we also look at his future as he is just 19 years old, Real isn’t just buying the performance of his tomorrow, they are gambling 135 million euros for the future decade of his career. As he’s young, he also provides a good resale value if Real wants to sell him. This is a perfect example of the buying potential transfer model.

55 + 5M Euros for Cucurella

Real Madrid signed Marc Cucurella for a total of 60 million euros for a six year contract until 2032. He earns a reported salary of 12.5 million euros per year, making the total commitment 60 + 12.5 * 6 = 135 million euros. If we spread it throughout his contract, then we get the total annual amortization which is 135 / 6 = 22.5 euros.

This is an established player case. If we look at this 27 years old left back, his elite-match experience, Real Madrid’s urgent need for a full-back who can help out defensively while the rest of the team charges forward, his previous top-tier performance at both Chelsea and Spain National Team, and the scarcity of elite players in his position, it is not hard to understand why Real Madrid paying such a price for Cucurella who can contribute immediately. If Diomande is potential, then Cucurella is certainty and stability.

20M Euros for Dumfries

Real Madrid’s second full-back signing is Denzel Dumfries. Real Madrid paid Inter Milan Dumfries’ 20 million euros release clause to bring him to Bernabeu. They signed a 4 year contract running until 2030 with an annual salary of 10.5 million euros. If we spread the fee within the contract length, we get the annual amortization 20 / 4 = 5 million euros, adding the wage can calculate the total annual commitment 5 + 10.5 = 15.5 million euros.

Now this is another transfer type. Real Madrid didn’t spend 60 - 140 million on every position. They also found a cheap beast Dumfries for just 20 million. Unlike Madrid’s current right back Alexander Arnold, Dumfries is more physical and covers more space. He is more balanced in offense and defense using his scary raw speed, making him fits Mourinho’s tactical needs very well. His big-match experience also makes him a stabler choice. However, as he’s already 30 years old, this signing doesn't bring much resale value. This signing is more of an investment to solve the problem right now.

25M Euros Carlos Espi

Madrid also signed Carlos Espi from Levante by paying the club 25 million release clause. They signed a 5 year contract until 2031 with an annual salary of 3.2 million per year. And if we calculate the annual commitment of this signing, we can see it is just 25 / 5 + 3.2 = 8.2 million euros per year. That is actually very cheap to sign the top scorer, top non penalty scorer, top scorer per 100 touches, top shot taker, top expected goals scorer, and top header scorer comparing with other U23 players across the top 5 leagues.

This Carlos Espi signing is a representation for signing development and future potential. Different from Diomande’s top potential, and Cucurella & Dumfries’ current value. This means Madrid aren’t simply investing on players, they are buying different types of long-term returns.

0M Deal — Konaté + Bernardo Silva

Fans usually think free transfers are clubs don’t pay to sign the player. That’s actually so wrong. Take Konate for example, there is no transfer fee paid to Liverpool, but Madrid still paid 20 million signing bonus to Konate to convince him to join. Same for Bernardo Silva, they also paid the player 10 million signing bonus to convince him to join. Free agents also receive higher wages than signed players. Bernardo Silva receive 20 million gross per year, and Konate receive 24 million gross per year. Which is much higher than their previous wages in their former clubs.

If we compare the total commitment of a free agent - Ibrahima Konate and a signed player - Denzel Dumfries. Konate’s annual commitment can be calculated by 20 / 4 (seasons) + 24 = 29 million per year. On the other hand, Dumfries’ annual commitment is only 15.5 million euros per year as we calculated before. The same goes with Bernardo Silva. So this perfectly show that a free transfer isn’t really free, it might actually be even more costly than a signing with a certain fee.

The Rodri Problem

Over the past weeks, Madrid has been heavily linked with Rodri, Jose Mourinho also signaled he wanted Rodri. But they ultimately lost control of the situation when Barca came in. BUT WHY??? What does this failure to sign Rodri tell us about its negotiating strategy?

One problem with it is Madrid and Man City’s player valuation difference. Madrid has made it clear they won’t give anymore than 60 million euros. City however says negotiations start when they offer 80 million. The huge gap makes the negotiations stop and deal off.

Now let’s look at the ability to make money.

If we analyze the graph, we can see that most of the sales comes from academy players. Rather than using them as first-team producer, Madrid makes their academy a money maker. If an academy player is sold to another club, the book value (cost) is zero as Madrid don’t need to pay other clubs to buy an academy player. This makes everything made pure profit which Madrid can reuse in other places to strengthen their first-team.

62M From Sell-On Clauses

This is actually the coolest part of Madrid’s transfer model and it is where Florentino’s genius transfer strategy shines. Real don’t need to keep every player to generate economical value. Players who aren’t part of the team still brings money back. Madrid sell the player today, keep a part of the player’s rights (sell-on clause) and keeps collecting money later. That’s a show of Madrid turning young players into long-term tools.

We can find that in the Gonzalo & Palacios transfer to Fulham, Madrid keeps a 30% sell-on clause on both of them to keep getting money if they future develops into stars and transfers to bigger clubs.

How Real Madrid Actually Spend Money?

Let’s spread all the numbers out. First the money generated, they made 112 million euros in total on player sales and 62 million euros from sell-on clauses, which is 174 million euros made in total. Second the spending part, 135 + 60 + 20 + 25 = 240 million euros transfer fee spent. Then the signing bonuses for 0 millions, 10 + 20 = 30 million euros. We can then calculate the net spending by 240 + 30 - 174 = 96 million euros. That is actually not much compared to the spending of other clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, etc… This shows the importance of economical balance in transfer market.

What This Tell Us About Real Madrid?

This transfer window is a bit mixed for Real Madrid. They have the 135 million record-breaking signing (long-term investment), 60 million for a prime star (immediate sporting value), 20 million for a cheap beast (efficient squad balancing), and the 25 million wonder-kid (tactical need and future development).

They also have 0 million Konate and Bernardo ( avoiding transfer fees), 110 million player sales (keeping the squad size and at the same time support spending), 80 million sell-on income (maximizing use of former players), and Rodri (knowing when not to spend too much).

Conclusion

Real Madrid aren’t just ignoring financial structure, they are using other things to support bigger investments where they believe will eventually be proven worth the money like 135 million on Diomande.
