I mean, when I’m not home, when I’m usually alone. I know exactly what I used my day for, what I accomplished, and where all the hours went..

But at home? Somehow, the days just pass by, and before I even realise it, I’m wondering, “Wait, what exactly did I do today?” 😭

But do I hate it?

Capital NO.

Because Home is that one place where I get to experience what real happiness feels like. It’s where I’m pampered the most, where I can decide to do whatever I want, whenever I want, without having to explain myself.

And the best part? Being around my family all day.

The endless gist. The random conversations. Bringing up things that happened years ago and somehow laughing about them all over again. Hearing stories I’ve probably heard a hundred times but still listening because, well… it’s family. 😂

Maybe that’s why I’ll always want to go home.

Because sometimes, a day doesn’t have to be productive to be meaningful.

Sometimes, it’s enough to just be home. 🤍

And since I knew I’d probably just sit in the hostel doing absolutely nothing, I thought, why not go home and see my mummmmmm and my babies? 🥺

And sincerely, I really, really thank God I did!

Because imagine I had stayed back in the hostel alone like an homeless child 😭. Being around my family turned out to be the best decision I’ve made this week.

I got home around 1 p.m., and my people were SO happy to see me likeeeeeeeeeee 😭😭

It was as if I had gone on a 50-year trip and was just returning home. 😂

I received the tight hugs 🫂 I had been longing for, FOR FREEEEE. 🥺🤍

Home.

Sweet home.

And guys, no matter what, always find your way home, plsssssssss.

There is just something about being home that you cannot explain. You can be tired, stressed, overwhelmed, or just mentally exhausted, but somehow, being around your people makes everything feel a little lighter.

I rested for about two hours, and then I remembered that one beautiful soul had dashed me flour. Thankfully, I brought it home. 😭

So I immediately told my sisters, “We’re making puff-puff.”

And just like that, we went to the kitchen and started making puff-puff like we had been planning it for weeks. 😂

We made it.

We ate it.

We enjoyed it. 😉

And honestly? It was perfect.

Then when it was time to make dinner, I casually told my mum that I was craving yam and egg.

Guess what?

She bought the yam immediately and cooked it for me. 🥺😭

Now tell me, WHY WON’T I LIKE HOME???

How am I supposed to stay away from a place where my mum will hear me say, “I’m craving yam and egg,” and immediately make it happen? 😭😂

This is where I experience true happiness.

1. I’m zainab MuhammadAwwal, A practicing Muslimah. 🤍

My relationship with Allah is probably the most important part of who I am. I'm still learning, still trying, still falling short and trying again. I just pray Allah keeps bringing me closer to Him and makes me better.

2. I’m a writer.

I love putting feelings, thoughts and random experiences into words. Sometimes I don't even know what I'm feeling until I start writing about it.

3. I study Chemistry. 🧪

Yes, Chemistry. To be precise I'm an aspiring Analytical Chemist ⚗️👩‍🔬

And before you ask, NO! I don't understand everything. 😭 I'm simply surviving, learning and hoping everything eventually starts making sense.

4. I love my siblings so muchhhhh.

Like, SO MUCH. I can literally pray for them for hours. I want good things for them so badly, and one of my biggest hopes is to see them grow into happy, successful people. May Allah protect them, guide them and make life easy for every single one of them. Aameen. 🤍

5. I love my mum.

Our relationship isn't always perfect, but I love her deeply. I genuinely pray that Allah makes life easy for her and my Father, gives them ease where they've experienced difficulty and rewards them for every sacrifice they've made for us. Aameen🤍

6. I love seeking Islamic knowledge.

I enjoy listening to beneficial lectures and learning about my Deen. It's something I genuinely love, Although I still have a lot to learn about my Deen, I genuinely hope to keep learning and growing in it. I pray Allah makes the journey easy for me and increases me in beneficial knowledge. 🤲🤍

7. I love listening to Qur'an.

There is just something about Qur'an that makes everything feel a little quieter inside. Sometimes I don't even need a long conversation. I just need to listen.

8. My favourite food is Wanke with fish, preferably titus😭

9. I just recently completed my teenage era, and honestly, I’m still processing the transition. 😭

10. I’m a fan of romance stories.

Give me a good romance story and suddenly I have forgotten every responsibility I have.

I appreciate people who see potential in me even when I don't see it myself. Someone who encourages me to grow instead of making me feel like I have to remain the same person forever? I value that deeply.

You could literally send me something kind that I wasn't expecting and I'll read it five times, smile at my phone and probably save it somewhere. 😭

13. I love my peace.

My peace is not negotiable.

I've become increasingly aware of how precious it is to have a quiet mind, a peaceful environment and people around me who don't constantly disturb that peace.

14. I love people who genuinely care about me.

But here's the complicated part…

I have trust issues and I overthink alot😭

Sometimes someone can genuinely care about me and I'll still be sitting there thinking, “Hmm. But do you REALLY?”

I'm learning that not everyone who loves you is secretly planning to hurt you. Hopefully, I'll get better at believing people when they show me genuine care.

I love looking at beautiful things, and yes, I will take pictures of them. 😂

At this point, I'm mentally packing my bags for countries I haven't even researched yet. Please, somebody fund this new interest before it becomes a full-blown problem. 😭✈️🌍

I like knowing that someone actually wants me around. 😂

I think that's one of the reasons I love writing too.

Some are academic. Some are personal. Some are probably completely unrealistic right now. 😂

But I like having dreams.

Even when I don't know exactly how I'll get there, I like knowing there's something I'm moving towards.

And honestly?

I'm beginning to think that's okay.

I'm still discovering things about myself, changing my mind, making mistakes, learning, unlearning and becoming.

I want to grow in my Deen, build a career I'm proud of, take care of the people I love, experience beautiful things, keep writing and hopefully leave some kind of goodness wherever I go.

I'm learning to be patient with myself.

I'm learning that becoming the person I want to be won't happen overnight.

I went to the lab with my friends as usual…

On getting there, we signed in and went to our usual lab, Phytochemical. There’s honestly nothing so special about the lab that other laboratories don’t have, but it’s cool there regardless. 😂

Before doing any work, we first have to say “Hi” to Phytochemical. 😂 It’s basically part of the routine at this point.

Unfortunately, there was no light in the lab today, and no light literally means NO WORK! 😭

But since we had already gone all the way there, I thought, I should at least be different from someone who didn’t come at all. 😂

So, we started moving around the laboratory, checking out some of the instruments we hadn’t properly seen before. And honestly, I still gained something from it, so I’d say the trip wasn’t completely wasted. 😌

Another thing that would be missing from my stay in the laboratory is gist.

I mean, talking non-stop with my girllllls. 😂❤️

That has honestly become one of my favourite parts of coming to the laboratory because, obviously, when school finally resumes, we won’t have as much time for all this again. So for now, we’re enjoying it while it lasts. 😉😂

After staying for a short while, we eventually left early to go and do something a little more productive with the rest of our day. 😌

No light, no experiment—but at least we got some gist, explored the lab a little, and still learned something. I’ll take that. 😂🧪

As soon as we signed in, we moved straight to the Phytochemical Laboratory. I honestly don't know why we are always going there 😂 I just keep finding myself there every day. At this point, I think I'm becoming part of the furniture lol.

We sat down for a while, but there was no work going on there, so we decided to check if they were working in the Metal Analysis Laboratory.

And guess what? They were actually working! 😭😂

That's one thing that interests me the most about coming to the lab. I mean, I can't be going to the lab just for the sake of going. At least I should gain something, learn something new, and improve every day.

We had the opportunity to learn, unlearn, and relearn in the Metal Analysis Laboratory today. Although nothing was entirely strange to me because this wasn't my first time there, I was able to understand some of the things I'd learned previously much better. Sometimes, seeing something repeatedly in practice just makes everything click differently.

And then… curiosity got the better of me today. 😂

I was able to enter the NMR Laboratory and finally see what was inside! 👀

Let's just say I sneaked in because I was extremely curious. 😂 I've always wondered what the place looked like and what was actually inside, so getting the opportunity to see it was honestly interesting.

After we finished working, I sat myself down and started brushing through everything I had written in my notebook, just going over the things we'd learned for the day.

And then, we called it a day! 🥹

We trekked back to the hostel as usual, but today's walk was SO TIRING. 😫

The sun was doing too muchhhhhhh. It honestly felt like I was walking 10 miles. 😭

By the time I got to my room, I couldn't even go straight to bed because I was tireddddddd. I just needed to sit down and recover first. 😂

When I finally felt relaxed, I went straight to the kitchen and made my favourite food.

And honestly?

I deserved it. 😋🤭

After touring the laboratory, we later found the team working in the Metal Analysis Laboratory, and we decided to join them. We ended up spending most of our time there, working alongside them and getting more practical exposure to the processes involved in metal analysis.

It was another opportunity to see how the things we learn theoretically are actually carried out in the laboratory. We observed the workflow, followed the different stages of the analysis, and assisted with the work being done. I particularly enjoyed being able to stay throughout the process rather than just observing for a few minutes and leaving.

We continued working with them until it was time to leave, and honestly, it made the day feel very productive. Every day in the lab keeps exposing me to something new, and I'm gradually getting more comfortable with the practical side of analytical chemistry.

After leaving the lab, though, the day took a completely different turn. 😂

We wanted to get a few things, so we started moving around because we must find the cheapest place to buy them. We were pricing things way too much, and somehow, we ended up walking around almost the whole school. 😂

Today basically became a shopping day because I genuinely don't know when I spent all my money. Everything was entering my eyes! 😭

After all that walking, I was so tired. By the time I got back to my hostel, I just wanted to......

SLEEPPPPP😴

And that was exactly what I did. 😂

I just deyyyyyyyyy. 😭

I read books, as usual. At this point, reading has somehow become one of those things I naturally fall back to whenever I don't have anything else going on.

I rested too..

And honestly?

I think I needed it.

The day was pretty uneventful until a friend came over. We spent some time together, talked, laughed, and just existed in the same space. Nothing extraordinary happened, but somehow, she made the day feel less… boring.

And sincerely, I appreciated that.

Sometimes, you don't need some big, exciting plan to have a good day. Sometimes, all it takes is having someone around who makes an ordinary day feel a little lighter.

So yes, today was quiet.

I read.

I rested.

I had company.

And somehow, that was enough.

Maybe not every day needs to be productive or memorable.

Some days can just be.🫂

I eventually woke up so veryyyyy late that I couldn't go to the lab again. 😭

I just thought, I'm not going to let the day go to waste like this, so I brought out some of the books I had suspended reading for so longgggg.

I read them to my heart's content. Honestly, today is probably the first day I've ever read books for that long! 😂

At some point, I got tired, dropped the books, and went looking for some good sleep, and I eventually found it. A long, reallyyyyy long one!

I promise I'm not pregnant, I just prioritize my sleep more than anything else🫠

When I woke up, I went straight to my friend's room because my room was just so boring to me today. I don't even know why. I stayed there for a very longgggg time doing absolutely nothing but playing. 😂

Afterwards, we decided to take a stroll around, and we did!

Sincerely, I'm going to miss all these little things so much when school resumes because there won't be nearly as much time for all of this again.

I’m naturally drawn to fun and playful moments... I don't like it when everywhere is boring, honestly, and that's one of the reasons I'm enjoying my holiday so much. 😂💯

There wasn’t much going on when we arrived, so we simply sat down and waited. Since I had some pending work, I decided to use the quiet time to catch up on a few things instead of just sitting around.

We eventually got some work done in the laboratory before heading back to the hostel earlier than usual.

As always, the walk back was filled with nonstop gist. 😂 There’s something about walking back with friends that makes the journey feel much shorter.

When I got to my room, I rested for a while and found something to keep myself busy with.

Around 6 p.m. one of my friends came over. We talked for a while, then went out for a little walk, bought a few things, and just enjoyed the evening.

And of course, I couldn’t let the day end without capturing the sunset. 🌅

Taking pictures of sunsets is honestly one of those little things I never get tired of doing. There’s just something so peaceful about watching the sky change colours at the end of the day.

Another simple day, another memory to keep🤗

And guess what?

I woke up… looked around… and went straight back to sleep.

When I eventually woke up properly, I decided to make the day somewhat productive. I read some books, and honestly had a really nice, peaceful day.

Until one of my friends decided that peace was not meant for me.

She casually pranked me that all our results had been released.

I froze.

Like, actually froze!!!

For a moment, everything else stopped existing. I was already trying to log into my portal, mentally preparing myself for whatever I was about to see.

Only to find out… It was a lie.

A JOKE!!!!!!

A PRANK!!!!!!

I genuinely could not have been angrier. 😭

Who pranks someone with their results??? Especially when you know how much we’ve been waiting for them?

Anyway, after recovering from the emotional damage, I went back to enjoying my holiday.

But I’m definitely gonna do my own back!!😫😫

It made me remember a poem we used to sing during our secondary school days…

I left around 9 a.m. with my colleagues. The sun was out, and it was somehow scorching. I felt like I shouldn't go again because, honestly, I don't like walking under the sunlight…

We went anyway, because, as it's Monday, we shouldn't be lazyyy.

We signed in and went to our regular lab, “Phytochemical.” We sat there for a while, and I used the opportunity to go through all I had learnt in the phytochemical laboratory.

We were supposed to have a presentation, but the staff in charge didn't show up after all!

We walked around the lab to check which lab was working, but we found none.

Later on, one of my friends and I suggested that we go outside to get some fresh air.

We stayed outside for quite a long time. We gisted and talked a lot about academics, how to go about course registration, which courses to pick and the ones we weren't going to pick, since school is resuming in no time.

As we were discussing, I got an email saying that I was one IqraPay Ambassador of the Week. I couldn't be happier! I first shared the news with my mentor, for of course, he should be the first to know, then I told my colleagues about it too.

Y'all should feel free and celebrate with me😉

We went back to the phytochemical laboratory, did some work, and finally thought of calling it a day.

On getting back to my hostel, I couldn't do anything but sleep because I was so tired. Then I slept for 4 hours straight.

I didn't sleep much, did I? Lol.

I woke up early and started doing my chores immediately. It was a whole lot of work, but I managed anyway.

I started listening to the Qur’an while doing them because, somehow, with the Qur’an playing, my work usually feels much easier and faster.

So, I finished in no time! well, around 12 p.m. though 😭. By then, I knew I couldn’t go to the lab again, so I thought of reading the stories I had left untouched for quite a long time.

It took me like two hours to finish one chapter because I was reading it and reflecting on it. And yeah, I really enjoyed reading it.

After that, I went to meet my friends in their room, for nothing serious, honestly just to play. 😂

Yeah, I love playing. It’s my way of letting go of worries and stress. Sometimes, you just need to forget everything and have fun.

I spent more than three hours with them, and then a thought just came to my mind: I have to write and post on my Substack! 😭 I couldn’t afford to break my streak.

I honestly enjoyed spending time with my friends. At the same time, I chatted so happily with someone I had been wanting to make up with. I also had a long phone call with my sister.

And believe me, I’m not a call person 😂, but apparently, I can stay on a call for more than three hours with people I feel safe and comfortable with.

If I were to describe my day in one word, I would say fulfilment.

And just like that, I can boldly say I started my day in a good mood, and it ended in a good mood too.

I woke up feeling so, so tired...

Maybe it was because I felt like skipping work. Who knows? Whatever it was, that feeling eventually made me skip work.

It was already veryyyy late before I finally decided I wasn't going to the lab again.

I thought about making today even more productive than the days I've been going to the lab.

So, I stayed back and started going through the classes I had missed for a particular course I registered for. It's been weeks since I've been postponing it.

And today? I sat myself down and watched the videos and listened to the VNs to a reasonable extent.

One of the things that made today even more exciting for me was that I officially became an IqraPay Ambassador!

This is obviously an addition to my school tasks, but I don't mind.

Because honestly, many Muslims want to dedicate time to seeking Islamic knowledge, but financial pressure makes it difficult. Time spent learning can feel like time not earning, and IqraPay was built to change that.

And I see publicity as one of the ways I can help, so today, I literally spent most of my day doing that.

Around 5 p.m., I was already tired, so I took a nap!

Or did I sleep?

I rested anyway.

On getting there, I somehow found myself being one of the “staff” teaching some of my colleagues the procedures for phytochemical analysis. 😂

Although, we later moved on to the real practical, the qualitative analysis of the metabolites present in our sample.

And honestly? It was VERY funnnn. 😂

I had read about it before, so everything felt quite relatable and familiar. Seeing what I had only read about being carried out practically made it even more interesting. 💯

After we finished, I sat down with one of my friends and we started gisting.

And that too? VERY much funnnn. 😂

Before we knew it, it was almost 2 p.m. We thought about leaving…

And well, we eventually did. 😌

we didn't do much work today but the little we did was eye opening🫠

I went to the lab with my colleagues today, as usual. At this point, I think it’s safe to say that I genuinely love going to the lab. 😭❤️ There’s just something about being around the instruments, learning new things, asking questions and actually getting involved that makes me excited every time.

We signed in and went straight to the Metal Analysis Laboratory, where they were just about to start analyzing different digested copper (Cu) samples.

One thing I particularly enjoyed today was sample weighing. Watching how carefully the samples are handled and weighed before analysis really made me appreciate how much attention to detail analytical chemistry requires. Even the smallest step can affect the final result, so accuracy is definitely not something to joke with in the laboratory.

I sat there, helped with everything I could, and of course, I asked plenty of questions. 😌 My major target today was understanding how to operate the AAS machine, and thankfully, they explained everything so well.

Andddddd… I’m happy to officially announce that I now know how to use the AAS machine! 🤏😭😂

Okay, I’m still learning and definitely need more practice, but being able to understand the process and actually operate it is a huge step for me. One more instrument to my growing laboratory experience! ⚗️

Afterwards, I went back to the Phytochemical Laboratory, where my colleagues and I started brainstorming about everything we’ve done so far, what we’ve learned, what we could improve on, and what we still need to explore.

Around 1 PM, we finally left for the hostel. And of course, the walk back was basically a moving podcast episode because we gisted non-stop. 😂

Another day in the lab, another set of things learned, and another reminder of why I enjoy this journey so much.

Slowly learning. Slowly improving. Steadily becoming better Analytical Chemist 🧪🤍

So, I went with my friends. On getting there, we signed in and went straight to the Metal Analysis Lab, where we met some of our colleagues taking care of the place. We stayed there, gisting with them because, well, we felt that was the only way we could help. 😌

Afterwards, we went to the Phytochemical Laboratory and met with the staff member who took us through phytochemical analysis last week. She asked us to submit the assignment she gave us and then asked us a few questions, which we answered quite well. 🤏

That actually helped me understand phytochemical analysis better because I was able to assess myself and see how much I had retained.

We spent about two hours there before one of our colleagues mentioned that something was happening at the school auditorium. I asked what it was, and he said it was the Homecoming Ceremony of Prof. Emeritus Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede and the Investiture Ceremony and Award of Excellence to Distinguished Alumni and University of Ilorin Ambassadors. ✨

And this? This is one of the things that genuinely excites me. I mean, seeing older people share their experiences, talk about what they've gone through, and tell us about the things they've achieved to get to where they are todayyy. 🥹

I went with the intention of meeting people and learning, and sincerely, I actually did both. I stayed for a very long time until my stomach started aching from hunger. 😫

I honestly felt like not leaving, but I had to because I couldn't imagine fainting there. 🤧 I'm a strong girl, though. 😂

I got back to my hostel, cooked, ate, and then rested. 😌

And that was how my beautiful week began. 💗

Looking forward to what tomorrow has in store. ✨

Today was different.

No laboratory. No rushing around. No trying to meet up with anyone. No “I have to do this before I leave.” Nothing. 😂

I simply stayed home and rested.

At first, it felt a little strange doing absolutely nothing, especially because I've somehow become used to always having something on my to-do list. But today, I decided that my only responsibility was to rest.

And honestly? I needed it.

Sometimes we get so caught up in being productive that we forget that resting is also part of the process. You don't always have to be learning, working, attending something, or achieving a goal.

Sometimes, you just need to breathe.

So today, I did nothing spectacular. I stayed home, took things slowly, and enjoyed the quiet.

Maybe that was exactly what I needed.😌

Some days are simply for resting and that's okay.🤏

I decided to skip work 🙃 Not because I'm lazy but because I got many things to take care of, apart from lab work 🙃

So, I did all my tasks and I was so happy afterwards…

Then around 12pm, I left the hostel to see an optometrist, nothing much, just went for an eye check-up. I no dey play with my eyes at all…

The doctor used a biomicroscope to examine my eyes.

I honestly didn't know what the instrument was called before, but I was so curious that I asked her and she said it's a slit lamp, also called a biomicroscope, used for examining the different structures of the eye in detail, including: 🔍 Conjunctiva, 🔎 Lens, Tear film, Iris and pupils, Cornea and the likes…

She did everything she was supposed to do and gave me the necessary things she should!

A sincere advice: if you are not loaded, don't go for an eye check-up pleaseee, because in there? They can get someone drained financially 😫

May God Almighty enrich my brother/sponsor.

Having done with that, I headed home directly, because I'm so much missing home!! 😌

My candid advice?

Wherever you are, whatever direction life is taking you to, always find a way to go home… you'll thank me later!

I woke up early, waited for my colleagues..

Got to CRL excited, ready to see what the day had in store.

Then… I started talking. 😂

Nothing dramatic, No major practical, No machine doing something fascinating. Just conversations with colleagues.

But somewhere between the random gist and the serious conversations, I realised something: the laboratory is also a place for learning from people.

Sometimes, you learn from the instruments.

Sometimes, from the samples.

Sometimes, from the person standing beside you.

Today reminded me that not every productive day has to be packed with practical work. There are lessons hidden in conversations, experiences, questions and even random discussions with colleagues.

So yes, today at CRL may not have been filled with experiments, but I still walked away with something.

A perfect workday doesn't always have to involve practical work. Sometimes, those little conversations are the practical. 🧪 💯

And honestly… I’m beginning to enjoy this whole learning-from-everything journey 😌

I signed up and went straight to phytochemical laboratory, we sat there for a while and one of the laboratory staffs entered, she was seeing my colleagues and I for the first time, she asked us to ntroduce ourselves and we did exactly that.

She then explained phytochemicals for us, it meaning, how saponins, Tannins, Alkaloids and the likes are extracted in plants🪴

She also explained the primary and secondary metabolites, how Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis are done in phytochemical labs

She made today an educative and productive day for me😊

After we spent like 2 hours with her, we then proceeded to concentration laboratory where we were explained to and shown all the apparatus there…

Spent like 1 hour in that lab also, and one of my colleagues brought up the idea of us leaving early together again….. And we did🙃

On our way back we bought groundnut,, walking back to our hostel and eating it too…🤭

I really enjoyed today

why?😉

Because there was no wasting of time 💯
