The new centre of gravity is no longer whether a machine can be programmed to execute a movement, but whether it can watch enough human demonstrations to acquire useful physical skill. In warehouses, homes, factories and laboratories, this has made imitation learning feel like the missing bridge between brittle automation and adaptive machines.</p><p>Rehabilitation looks like an obvious beneficiary. Therapists demonstrate movements every day. Patients repeat them. Robots can observe, assist, correct and adapt. The temptation is to conclude that rehabilitation robotics should simply learn from therapists and scale what they do.</p><p>That conclusion is almost right, which is why it is dangerous. The decisive question is not whether a robot can imitate a therapist&#8217;s movement. It is whether it can learn the therapist&#8217;s judgement about when help should appear, fade, change direction, or stop. Neural signals can now control cursors, decode speech, guide hand movement, trigger stimulation, and connect with robotic devices in ways that would have sounded speculative not long ago. Yet the clinical system still hesitates, not because it doubts that the signal exists, but because it cannot yet trust the whole chain around the signal.</p><p>The complication is that the field keeps treating BCI as a device category. That framing is too small. In rehabilitation, the decisive question is not whether a brain signal can command an external machine. The decisive question is whether a patient&#8217;s intention, effort, movement, feedback, adaptation, and functional transfer can be linked into a governed learning loop that survives ordinary care. The answer is this: BCI becomes strategically important in rehabilitation only when it stops being marketed as mind-contro&#8230;</p>

It fails because gains made in one place often do not survive contact with another. The strategic question is therefore not whether spatial computing can make rehabilitation more immersive. It is whether it can make transfer observable, trainable, and economically credible. The answer is the Functional Transfer Ledger: a spatially governed system that records whether capacity acquired under controlled conditions becomes reliable function in the places where life actually A stroke may happen in minutes. The acute admission may last days. Recovery can continue for months or years, across rehabilitation centres, outpatient clinics, community services and eventually the home. Yet much of healthcare remains organised around the encounter: admission, intervention, discharge. That tension stayed with me after participating in <strong>Forum 1: Personalised Healthcare</strong> at the AAHCI Southeast Asia Talent Education Symposium 2026 at Universiti Malaya on 15 August. The forum, moderated by Assoc Prof Dr Azura Mansor, deliberately moved through three questions: where future healthcare will happen; how data might make care more personalised; and how humans and increasingly intelligent technologies should work together&#8230;</p>

They walk across factory floors, appear in investor decks, staff demonstration environments, manipulate objects, imitate human motion and carry the promise of &#8220;physical AI&#8221; into public imagination. For the first time in decades, robotics feels culturally visible again. The machine is no longer hidden behind a cage, a rail, a laboratory bench or a manufacturing cell. It is entering the world in a human-facing form.</p><p>For rehabilitation robotics, this creates a dangerous temptation. The obvious conclusion is that if general robotics is becoming more humanlike, rehabilitation robotics should follow. More limbs. More anthropomorphic interaction. More whole-body imitation. More general-purpose assistance. More spectacle. That conclusion is strategically wrong.</p><p>The real lesson of the humanoid wave is not that every robot should look like a person. The story is attractive because parts of it are true. Robotics is improving. AI is changing perception, planning, and control. Labour scarcity, ageing populations and industrial automation all create real demand for machines that can act in the physical world.</p><p>The complication is that technical plausibility and investable readiness are not the same thing. A robot can be impressive in a demonstration, strategically important to a country, and still commercially unproven as a public-market asset. The question is therefore not whether frontier robotics deserves capital. It does. The question is what evidence should be visible before public investors are asked to underwrite the dream.</p><p>The standard should be simple: before public investors pay &#8230;</p>
