Incumbent Republican Rob Wittman holds a lead in trader consensus for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District due to the seat’s historical Republican lean and his long record of electoral overperformance in a district that favored GOP presidential and gubernatorial candidates in recent cycles. Shannon Taylor, the Democratic nominee and Henrico County prosecutor who won her August 4 primary with a majority, has narrowed the gap through strong fundraising, endorsements from Governor Abigail Spanberger and Senator Tim Kaine, and a focus on costs and accountability issues. Most forecasters rate the race Lean Republican ahead of the November 3 general election, though some have shifted it toward toss-up status amid the district’s gradual leftward movement and Taylor’s campaign momentum. Early voting begins this month.
