Sam LaPorta enters the 2026 regular season in a contract year after recovering from 2025 back surgery that limited him to nine games and three receiving touchdowns. He has cleared a subsequent preseason hip issue, resumed full participation, and impressed in training camp with consistent red-zone production and seam-stretching plays alongside quarterback Jared Goff. The Lions’ high-volume passing attack features heavy target competition from Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs, yet LaPorta remains the primary tight end with established efficiency and red-zone usage. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing’s scheme emphasizes continuity with the prior system, while LaPorta’s motivation to secure an extension adds situational upside in an offense projected among the league’s most productive.
