NYC’s September precipitation averages 4.3 inches at Central Park, yet exhibits extreme year-to-year variability driven by the frequency of tropical moisture plumes, nor’easters, and frontal passages. With 3–4 inches and greater-than-6 inches nearly tied in market-implied odds, traders are balancing NOAA’s neutral precipitation signal and a developing El Niño pattern—which often suppresses Northeast rainfall—against the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s drier forecast and the historical precedent for occasional multi-inch events. Early September outlooks lean slightly below average, but model consensus remains weak and subject to rapid shifts from Atlantic storm tracks or jet-stream blocking.
