Recent Federal Reserve policy tightening has emerged as the dominant driver for GBP/USD, with the central bank raising its target range 25 basis points to 3.75–4.00% on September 16 and signaling further hikes via an updated dot plot. This contrasts with the Bank of England’s September 17 decision to hold Bank Rate at 3.75% despite a 6-3 vote split, leaving the pound without yield support as U.S. rates now exceed UK levels. Elevated energy prices from Middle East tensions have pushed UK CPI toward 3.1% in August and are projected to exceed 3.5% by year-end, while U.S. inflation remains sticky. Traders are now focused on the FOMC meeting October 27–28 and the BoE decision November 5 as potential inflection points for rate differentials and sterling valuation.
