The Man Behind the “Substack”
My name is Dwight James Munger III, and my life has been a series of shifts between the front lines and the sidelines. Born a USMC brat at Camp Pendleton, I was raised with a bone-deep respect for honor and the chain of command. I spent my career protecting those values as a Canyon County Sheriff’s Deputy, a Meridian Police Officer, and a Deputy Coroner.
I’ve stood on the side of the road at 3:00 AM as an EMT, and I’ve walked the halls as a nurse. I know what it looks like when a life hangs in the balance, and I know the weight of the badge.
The Pivot
But life has a way of stripping you down to the essentials. After a life-altering car crash left me an amputee, and a journey through addiction that led to three years of sobriety (and counting), the world looks different. As a gay man, a felon, and a hate crime survivor living in the heart of Emmett, Idaho, I see the gaps in the system that I once served.
I’ve seen the law applied with a heavy hand to the vulnerable, while watching it bend and break for the powerful.
Why I Write
I started The Unbalanced Scale because the silence in the face of corruption is a debt we can no longer afford to pay. Here, I combine my “insider” knowledge of the legal system with the “outsider” reality of my current life.
What you’ll find here:
• Raw Dispatches: Observations on the Trump administration and the erosion of accountability.
• Resilience & Grit: Stories of surviving, adapting, and finding beauty in the Idaho landscape as a one-handed creator.
• The Truth of Justice: A bridge between my past in uniform and my present as a man demanding a better standard for us all.
