Becoming an artist again

Hey, I’m Jenni and so glad to connect with you here.

A little about me: I’ve spent the last 8 years working as a commercial food photographer in the UK - chasing ad jobs, hitting deadlines, saying yes to work that paid the bills but didn’t always fill my creative cup.

Last year I hit a wall, and it changed everything. Around that time, I started working alongside other photographers through Her Studio - an online community I built for us to make creative work together, meet up twice a month, and cheer each other on through everything the industry throws at us.

Watching everyone else fall back in love with their own work did something to me too. I picked up still life again - just me, trying to remember what I actually love to build

I haven’t been this excited about anything in a veeeery long time.

This publication is where I’m documenting that shift - from commercial food photographer to (hopefully, eventually) fine art & still life photographer. Not because I have it figured out, but because I think watching someone else start again might be exactly the permission you need to start again too.

You won’t find generic lighting tips here, or pretending this transition is easier than it is. Just the real, occasionally messy process of falling back in love with the work - and figuring out what it takes to build something of your own.

When you subscribe, you’ll get an article every Thursday. Every other Thursday is free - the story as it unfolds, wins and flops both. The alternating Thursdays are for paid subscribers, where I go deeper: image breakdowns, the business side, and the archive of 8 years of commercial work I’m now pulling apart to find my own voice in.

Honest conversations about what’s working and what it really takes to be a full time creative.
