Welcome
You already know something needs to change.
You have known for a while. Maybe you have not named the change yet, or maybe it is just a feeling. Start here. It’s free.
Maybe it is the career you have outgrown. The life that stopped fitting somewhere around the third year of telling yourself next year. The version of you that shows up every morning and does the job well and comes home and wonders when it started costing this much.
You are not burned out. You are not ungrateful. You are not behind.
You are standing at a threshold you have not crossed yet. Not because you lack the ability. Because the timing never feels right, and the voice that says wait is louder than the one that says go.
That is exactly where this work begins.
The Second Shift is a weekly newsletter publication and podcast for nurses who carry the weight of caring for 12 to 14 hours, then come home to begin a second shift.
This is the shift no one sees, one that is equally important. I have lived this story. As a coach, I create space for nurses built on real, honest conversations: a plan that moves you from chaos to a life you feel alive inside of again.
Who am I
I am Patrick. Board-certified coach. Registered nurse. Doctorate in nursing practice. Twenty-five years at the bedside and in the hardest rooms a human being can enter.
I left institutional healthcare to build a coaching practice from scratch, in public, on Substack. I sold most of what I owned. I lived in a van for five years. I built something different.
I am not telling you that to impress you. I am telling you because you need to know I have actually been where you are. Not a version of it. The real thing. The moment of standing at the threshold and not being able to see clearly enough to move.
I know what that costs. I know what it takes to move anyway.
That is what I bring to this work. Not a framework. Not a method. Twenty-five years of watching people face impossible moments and find reserves they did not know they had. And my own visible, documented transition as proof that the other side exists.
What you will find here
One essay every week. Written from inside the experience of transition, not above it. Personal, plain, and specific enough that you will recognize your own life in it.
Substack Notes throughout the week. Real moments. Real observations. The kind of thing you read and think — I have never seen anyone say that out loud before.
No frameworks. No five steps. No motivation that evaporates by the time you are done reading it. No one telling you what to do.
Just honest writing from someone who has been through it, for people who are in it.
When you are ready to go further
Some people read here for months before they take the next step. That is exactly right. Trust builds at its own pace, and I am not in a hurry.
When you are ready:
Start here. Read my articles - learn more about who I am, and how my perspective has developed.
Go deeper. Before You Leap is a $27 self-guided audit for people sitting on a real decision. Practical, emotional, identity readiness. One sitting. A pen. No pep talk.
Talk it through. When you are ready for a real conversation, the door is open. Three focused sessions over seven days. No curriculum. Just clarity.
Hear what others are saying.
