Massive capital expenditures exceeding $1 trillion by hyperscalers through 2026, coupled with Bank for International Settlements warnings in June about AI investment echoing dot-com excesses, have fueled bubble concerns amid uncertain returns on large language models and infrastructure. Debt-funded spending, circular financing arrangements, and negative free cash flows at some firms heighten vulnerability, while cheaper Chinese open-weight models gain market share and pressure US pricing. Macquarie analysts frame the cycle as "rolling bubbles" across the value chain rather than a single crash. Key upcoming catalysts include hyperscaler earnings reports, regulatory scrutiny on AI services, and supply constraints around power and memory chips that could shift trader consensus on timelines for any burst.
