Nicolás Maduro’s U.S. prosecution on narco-terrorism and cocaine-importation charges, following his January 2026 capture during a military operation, drives trader assessments of his prison exposure. Defense motions filed in early September 2026 seek dismissal on head-of-state immunity and capture-legality grounds, with oral argument set for November 17 before Judge Alvin Hellerstein; experts note precedents generally favor prosecution of non-recognized former leaders. The June 2027 trial date leaves room for plea negotiations or political factors involving Venezuela’s interim government. This uncertainty sustains the near-even split between no prison time and sentences of 60 years or more, as traders weigh dismissal risks against conviction exposure that includes life imprisonment.
