Recent monthly CPI prints in South Africa, including a June 2026 peak of 5.0% driven by transport and fuel costs before easing to 4.3% in July, have anchored trader expectations for the full-year 2026 average near 4.4–5.0%. Elevated oil prices amid Middle East tensions, alongside the South African Reserve Bank’s 7% policy rate and emphasis on returning inflation to its 3% target, sustain upward pressure on implied probabilities for the higher brackets. Food inflation remains subdued near 1%, providing some offset, while core measures hover around 4.2%. The closely contested 4.4–5.0% ranges reflect uncertainty over whether August–December fuel rebounds or rand stability will push the annual figure above or below 4.7%, with upcoming September data and SARB communications serving as key catalysts.
