**Olivia Rodrigo’s “the cure” and Noah Kahan’s “The Great Divide” sit as the clear frontrunners in the fan-voted 2026 VMA Best Alternative category, with market-implied odds at 41% and 39% respectively, reflecting their strong mainstream crossover appeal and dedicated followings.** The seven nominees, announced August 18, include Geese (“Taxes”), mgk & Fred Durst (“FIX UR FACE”), Sombr (“Homewrecker”), Tame Impala (“Dracula”), and twenty one pilots (“Drag Path”), but the contest has narrowed to Rodrigo’s pop-leaning alt track and Kahan’s folk-rooted anthem as the primary swing factors. Twenty One Pilots’ 18.5% reflects loyal core support, while Sombr’s 14% shows emerging momentum. With fan voting closing September 25 ahead of the September 27 ceremony, late surges in streaming or social engagement could shift the deadlock in this closely contested field.
