Yiwarr McGrath holds a commanding lead in the Mulka by-election market as the preselected Territory Labor candidate for the September 12 vote in this remote Northern Territory seat covering East Arnhem Land communities. The vacancy followed independent Yiŋiya Mark Guyula’s mid-August resignation in protest against Country Liberal Party government policies, creating a short campaign window that has favored Labor’s organizational resources and local profile. McGrath, a Yolŋu registered nurse and former NT Young Australian of the Year from Galiwin’ku, has positioned his candidacy around healthcare access and community services while seeking to build on elements of the prior independent representation. Limited opposition centers on independent Andrew Blamey, with trader consensus reflecting the absence of other viable contenders and historical patterns of strong support for Labor-aligned candidates in the electorate’s Indigenous-majority demographics. A late independent surge or shifts in turnout could still alter the outcome before polls close.
