Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority entering the 2026 midterms, so Democrats must secure a net gain of four seats for control. Nate Silver’s FLIPR model on the Silver Bulletin, which blends polling averages, fundamentals, and historical patterns, showed Democrats with roughly a 57% probability of taking the chamber as of late August. A Democratic generic ballot lead near six points, combined with President Trump’s approval near 38%, has created headwinds for the president’s party and improved Democratic positioning in key states including Texas, Ohio, Alaska, Iowa, Maine, and Michigan. Recent polling shifts have moved several of those contests into toss-up territory according to multiple forecasters. The model updates frequently through Election Day on November 3, leaving room for further movement based on new surveys, economic data, or campaign developments before any resolution dates.
