The primary resolution source for this market is official information from the Taiwanese government, however a consensus of credible reporting may be used.**Opposition parties in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan launched the first-ever impeachment motion against President Lai Ching-te in December 2025 over Premier Cho Jung-tai's refusal to countersign a revenue-sharing bill that would shift funds to local governments.** The motion advanced to a May 19, 2026, floor vote but received only 56 yes votes against 50 no votes, well short of the 76-vote (two-thirds) supermajority required among 113 legislators to refer the case to the Constitutional Court. The Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party together hold roughly 62 seats, creating a structural barrier that makes passage improbable without major shifts in legislative composition or alliances. Additional constitutional hurdles include a two-thirds approval by sitting Constitutional Court justices amid existing quorum disputes. No new impeachment proceedings have advanced since the May vote failed, and recent developments center on routine governance, defense drills, and cross-strait policy rather than renewed removal efforts. Trader sentiment reflects these institutional thresholds and the absence of fresh catalysts capable of altering the balance before any potential resolution window.
