Sam LaPorta enters the 2026 regular season as a focal point in the Detroit Lions' passing attack under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, whose scheme has historically featured tight ends prominently. The 25-year-old tight end is coming off back surgery that limited him to nine games and 489 yards in 2025, followed by a hip injury during training camp that briefly raised questions about his Week 1 availability against the Saints. He has since returned to full practice participation, with reports indicating the issue has resolved ahead of the opener. In a contract year within one of the league's highest-volume offenses alongside Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs, LaPorta's target share and yards will hinge on sustained health across 17 games, the distribution of opportunities in a crowded receiving corps, and Detroit's overall passing efficiency.
