Recent August CPI data at +0.4% month-over-month, driven by a 3.9% gasoline surge amid elevated oil prices from the Iran conflict, has kept trader focus on energy volatility and shelter components for the September reading. With market-implied odds clustered tightly between 0.5% and 0.6% MoM, sentiment reflects uncertainty over whether core goods pressures from prior tariffs and AI-related demand will offset potential moderation in services or energy. The September 16 FOMC projections, showing 2026 PCE inflation near 3.7%, alongside cooling labor market signals, underscore the data-dependent path ahead of the October 14 release, where even modest deviations in gasoline or rent indices could shift the outcome among the leading probabilities.
