**Global M6.5+ earthquake rates average roughly one event every eight days, or about 0.9 per seven-day window, based on long-term USGS and similar catalogs showing 46 such events annually on average.** This baseline, combined with Poisson-like variability in tectonic release, positions zero or one event as the most probable outcomes for the August 31–September 6 window, aligning with the market-implied probabilities of 48.5% for zero and 31% for one. Recent data reinforce this positioning. As of late August 2026, worldwide activity remains near or below average following earlier events such as the mid-August Flores (M7.7) and Colombia (M7.4) quakes and their aftershocks; the past week has featured only M5.5–6.0 events with no active M6.5+ sequences or notable foreshock clusters reported by monitoring agencies. Seismic rates fluctuate naturally without long-term trends, and current quiet conditions across major subduction zones and fault systems reduce the near-term likelihood of additional large releases. No major forecast updates or new geophysical indicators suggest an imminent shift before resolution.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 6.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until 48 hours after the market's closing time, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that time, another credible resolution source will be used.
This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
