Tim Walz as of September 2026.** Federal prosecutors have pursued cases against dozens of individuals tied to large-scale fraud in state social services and child nutrition programs, but investigations targeting Walz himself remain at the referral and probe stage. In June, Vice President JD Vance referred Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison to the DOJ following a Republican-led House Oversight Committee report alleging senior officials knew of widespread abuse yet failed to halt payments. A separate January DOJ inquiry into state resistance to federal immigration enforcement saw subpoenas blocked by a federal judge in June on grounds they served primarily to coerce cooperation rather than advance a viable criminal case. Walz announced in January he would not seek a third term, citing the need to address the allegations. Impeachment articles were introduced in the Minnesota House in March but have not advanced to trial. These political and oversight actions shape trader assessments of charging risk, while the absence of indictments or active grand jury developments keeps probabilities low absent new evidence or DOJ action.
