This market will resolve to "Yes" if Russia conducts a nuclear test by the listed date (ET). Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". A nuclear test is defined as the intentional non-combat detonation of a device by Russia that produces a nuclear chain reaction (fission or fusion), regardless of yield. Accidents, radiological dispersal devices (bombs that spread radioactive material using conventional explosives such as "dirty bombs"), or actions by third parties will not count toward this market's resolution. Tests not explicitly claimed by Russia may still qualify if a clear consensus of credible reporting attributes the nuclear detonation to Russia. For example, an unclaimed nuclear test analogous to the 1979 "Vela Incident" would count if credible reporting attributes it to Russia. The resolution source for this market will be a broad consensus of credible reporting.Russia maintains a voluntary moratorium on nuclear explosive tests since 1990 while preserving its Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty obligations, though it withdrew ratification in 2023 and has conditioned any resumption on similar actions by the United States. Primary drivers of market positioning include ongoing site preparations at Novaya Zemlya, repeated strategic missile launches such as Yars and Sarmat ICBMs in 2026, and development of systems like the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and Poseidon torpedo. Recent activity features submarine sea trials and ICBM combat training launches in August 2026 amid Ukraine-related tensions and NATO diplomacy, yet no verified nuclear detonations have occurred. Technical challenges, sanctions effects, and the absence of reciprocal U.S. testing continue to shape assessments of near-term probabilities. Scheduled exercises and diplomatic signals through year-end could influence timing if thresholds are crossed.
