The 2026 TX-35 general election pits Democratic nominee Johnny Garcia, a Bexar County sheriff’s deputy, against Republican Carlos De La Cruz, an Air Force veteran backed by President Trump. Mid-decade redistricting shifted the I-35 corridor seat southward, creating an open district with an R+4 partisan voter index and a projected Trump margin near 10 points under the new lines. Primary runoffs in May resolved contested nominations after a crowded field, with Garcia prevailing over a polarizing rival and De La Cruz defeating a state representative favored by some Texas GOP leaders. A late-August poll showed the candidates essentially tied at 45-44 percent, underscoring the seat’s competitiveness despite its Republican tilt and positioning trader consensus near even odds for the November 3 contest.
