Recent August CPI data showed headline inflation holding steady at 3.4% year over year, with a 0.4% monthly gain driven largely by a 3.9% surge in gasoline prices, while core CPI eased to 2.4%. The Cleveland Fed’s September nowcast sits at 3.43%, and analyst forecasts cluster between 3.4% and 3.7% amid ongoing energy volatility from Middle East supply concerns, resilient shelter costs, and selective AI-related demand pressures. These crosscurrents create a narrow distribution favoring 3.5% and 3.6% outcomes, with traders weighing the potential for further energy pass-through against any core moderation ahead of the October 14 release. Market-implied odds reflect real-capital consensus on these near-term data dependencies rather than a decisive directional signal.
