Major tech firms including Oracle, Amazon, Meta, Intel, and Microsoft have driven 2026 layoffs well ahead of 2025 pace through AI-linked restructuring, with year-to-date totals already matching or exceeding prior-year full-year figures across trackers like Layoffs.fyi, TrueUp, and Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Companies cite automation of legacy roles, budget shifts toward AI infrastructure and model development, and correction of pandemic-era hiring as they announce cuts while raising capital expenditure forecasts into the hundreds of billions. This reallocation has made AI the most frequently stated reason for job reductions for multiple consecutive months. Still, a sharp H2 slowdown could occur if AI tools deliver faster productivity gains that stabilize headcount or if broader economic conditions improve hiring demand.
