Recent August CPI data holding steady at 3.4% year-over-year, alongside the Cleveland Fed nowcast near 3.43% for September, anchors trader focus on outcomes clustered around 3.4–3.6%. Persistent upward pressures from gasoline and energy price surges—up nearly 4% month-over-month in August amid prior oil supply shocks—combined with tariff pass-through and sticky core services inflation, sustain market-implied odds favoring a modest reacceleration or steady print. Elevated consumer inflation expectations at 4.6% for the year ahead reflect these dynamics, while softer shelter trends and potential energy stabilization introduce downside risks that keep probabilities closely contested ahead of the October 14 release.
