This market will resolve to "Yes" if a natural meteoroid (bolide) explodes in Earth's atmosphere with a total impact energy greater than or equal to 5 kilotons of TNT equivalent between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. The object must be classified as a natural meteoroid; events involving artificial objects or reentry vehicles do not qualify. The primary resolution source will be the NASA JPL Fireball and Bolide Data repository: https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/fireballs/. The relevant field for determining impact energy is the “Impact Energy (kt)” column. If this dataset has not been updated to include all relevant dates by February 28, 2027, or if the NASA JPL Fireball and Bolide Data repository becomes permanently unavailable, this market may resolve based on a consensus of credible sources including the European Space Agency (ESA), the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), the U.S. Department of Defense, or credible reporting of a scientific consensus, such as a NASA press release.**Trader consensus favoring "No" (74.5% implied probability) rests on established base rates for ≥5 kt bolides, the absence of qualifying events through early September 2026, and continuous monitoring showing no imminent threats at that energy scale.** NASA’s CNEOS fireball database and historical records indicate such airbursts occur roughly once every 1–2 years on average, consistent with a Poisson-derived annual probability near 50% for at least one event. With roughly 3.5 months remaining, the conditional odds for a qualifying strike have declined. No confirmed ≥5 kt event has been recorded in 2026; recent bolides, including the Ohio (~0.25 kt) and Houston (~0.026 kt) events earlier in the year and the small predicted impactor 2026 RW1 (~0.6–1.3 m, September 6), fall well below the threshold. Sentry risk monitoring and ESA close-approach lists show only tiny objects with non-zero (but negligible) impact probabilities, and no cataloged near-Earth objects large enough to produce 5 kt are on collision trajectories. Elevated fireball reports in Q1 2026 did not translate into threshold events, reinforcing the statistical baseline rather than signaling an anomaly. Ongoing infrasound and satellite surveillance by CNEOS and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization continue to provide near-real-time detection, with resolution data expected by early 2027. The market-implied odds therefore reflect the low remaining window probability, the lack of new observational signals, and the inherent rarity of multi-kiloton airbursts from meter-scale meteoroids.
