August nonfarm payrolls rose 162,000—well above consensus—while the unemployment rate held at 4.1%; July PCE inflation reached 3.7% year-over-year and core measures remain elevated amid energy price pressures linked to Middle East developments. Hawkish signals from officials, including Governor Waller, have reinforced the data-dependent stance. Key near-term catalysts include the August CPI release on September 11 and the FOMC decision itself, which will clarify whether the central bank prioritizes inflation control over labor-market stability in its policy path.
