This market may resolve as soon as the relevant data showing the reached level is published. The federal funds target range stands at 3.50–3.75 percent as of early September 2026, unchanged through five consecutive FOMC meetings amid headline CPI at 3.4 percent year-over-year and core at 2.5 percent in July. Resilient labor market data, including positive nonfarm payrolls, and elevated energy-driven inflation have shifted consensus toward a prolonged pause or potential 25-basis-point hikes this year, pushing median economist forecasts for easing into mid-2027 with the policy rate expected near 3.0–3.25 percent by year-end. June SEP projections already lifted the 2026 median dot to 3.8 percent. The September 16–17 FOMC meeting, featuring updated economic projections and dot plot, alongside upcoming CPI and employment releases, will shape near-term rate path expectations and the likelihood of crossing key thresholds before 2027.
