Persistent inflation pressures, with July PCE at 3.7% year-over-year and core readings above the 2% target amid energy supply shocks, have prompted economists at UBS and Citigroup to push back or abandon 2026 rate-cut forecasts entirely, with some now anticipating hikes instead. The federal funds rate remains at 3.50-3.75%, and futures markets currently assign roughly 60% odds to a September 25-basis-point hike at the September 15-16 FOMC meeting. The August CPI release on September 11 will provide the final major input before that decision, while Chair Kevin Warsh’s recent hawkish signals underscore the Fed’s emphasis on price stability over premature easing.
